Help

Please, can you help me to create these pages from Japanese: Ise Yoshimori, Kataoka Tsuneharu, Kamei Shigekiyo, Suruga Jirō, Washio Yoshihisa, Bizen Heishirō, Karasumaru family. Thank you very much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.35.64.177 (talk) 11:40, 13 July 2022 (UTC)

@79.35.64.177: I'm sorry, but I don't have the spare time to take translation requests right now. Perhaps ask for assistance at WT:JA, and include your reasons why you want them translated. If you have good sources for each of them, that will help, too. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:42, 13 July 2022 (UTC)

Help with Japanese film credit "進行主任"

Thank you for your helpful edits on Wikipedia:WikiProject Japan/Film credits glossary! I keep encountering the term "進行主任" when subtitling Toei films from the 1960s. I could only find this term here at https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/制作進行, which links to the English-language article for "production assistant". Should this term really just be translated as "Production Assistant" in movie credits or is there a better way to translate this? It seems like the job must be far more important than what a "production assistant" is in English because there is only one listed and it includes the term "主任" ("chief"). The Japanese article seems to give some sort of explanation: "実写映画では、進行主任などとも呼ばれるが、プロダクション·マネージャーではなく、アシスタントの一種である。" I interpreted this to mean "In live-action films it is called a progress manager, though it is a kind of assistant, not a production manager." What do you think? Do you think that the term "進行主任" should be translated simply as "Production Assistant" or more grandiosely as "Progress Manager" or something else? This seems like an important term that should be added to the film credits glossary because it has appeared in every film I've watched lately but it doesn't appear in any dictionaries. I'm looking for the translation within the context of live-action films, by the way. Nicholas0 (talk) 02:41, 27 July 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Kamome Shirahama

On 1 August 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Kamome Shirahama, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Kamome Shirahama, in addition to writing and illustrating her best-selling Witch Hat Atelier manga series, has created variant covers for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and the Star Wars franchise? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Kamome Shirahama. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Kamome Shirahama), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Recreating a page similar to the previously deleted page

Hello!

I have recently had my username change approved and I'd like to rewrite a previous article that got deleted. I believe I haven't abided to the Wikipedia guidelines, and so I would like to retract the fact and do the right thing this time. Question

Hello Nihonjoe, I have a question about changing usernames. Will my edit counts, number of edits on particular articles, and other edit stats be transferred to my newly renamed account, meaning does "https://xtools.wmflabs.org/ec/en.wikipedia.org/WikiLinuz" mirror "https://xtools.wmflabs.org/ec/en.wikipedia.org/NEW_USER_NAME" if I change my username? Apologies for posting the question here; I couldn't find this exact info at WP:CHU, so I decided to ask here since you seem like an active admin on username changes. Thanks, --WikiLinuz {talk} 🍁 00:18, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

Questions about username change

Hi! I had some questions about username change, and these are coming from my company - for the pages that represent businesses, companies, who creates them? Who else would know the corporate info besides someone who works there? Is there a different process to create a business Wiki page? What happens to the page if the person who created it can no longer maintain it? What if 2 people worked on the page together?

Thanks so much for your help! Diandra utomo (talk) 22:22, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

@Diandra utomo: Wikipedia is not a place to advertise or promote a company. Pages on Wikipedia are written by editors interested in the subject. All article subjects must meet one or more of the notability requirements in order to have an article written about them. This means that all information included in the article must be verifiable using third-party reliable sources. In general, multiple (sometimes hundreds or thousands) editors create and maintain any given article.
I also recommend reading this page. It should answer most or all of your questions. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 22:30, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

Creating Sandboxes for Students New to Wikipedia

This semester I am having students in two of my university classes translate Japanese Wikipedia articles into English in groups. Many of them are new to computers and to Wikipedia.

I have created sandboxes for them, but am getting a nag message from the "CentralAuth" that my username differs from the sandboxes created. What should I do in this case? Thanks in advance for your advice. TNewfields (talk) 03:40, 4 November 2022 (UTC)TNewfields (Tim Newfields, Nihon University)

@TNewfields: I'd very strongly recommend taking advantage of the tools and resources of the Wikipedia:Education program. It's specifically set up to help instructors and students work together as part of school work. The program is a very useful tool used by thousands of instructors and students worldwide.
The reason you're getting those messages is because you're creating pages within another user's userspace, which you generally shouldn't be doing. Also, one of your students indicated that they were told they needed to change their username at your instruction. This is not generally acceptable per policy here. Editors need to choose their own username, and then they can let you know what it is so you can monitor them. Some of the sandboxes you created were for users that do not exist (I suspect because you were telling them to change their usernames to what you wanted instead of letting them select their own). ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:41, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

Kamakura (snow dome)

Hi Nihonjoe. I'm coming here because of Kamakura (snow dome) and because you seem to already be helping @TNewfields: out with something else above. TNewfields created this article earlier this year; it's probably OK, but it has never really been assessed (most likely because WikiProject banners were never added to its talk page). I think it might be somewhat of a translation of ja:かまくら given the similarities in layout. If it is, then it's going needs to be properly attributed as such per WP:TRANSLATE. Since TNewfields is a university teacher and seems to be using Wikipedia as part of their classes, perhaps there are other Japanese Wikipedia articles which have been translated either to create new or expand already existing English Wikipedia articles. Are you aware of a way to go about checking on this (perhaps by a bot)? -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:23, 5 November 2022 (UTC)

RESPONSE: This is the 2nd year that I have been working with some university students in the creation of some English Wikipedia content. My original goal was translation from Japanese, but gradually I have learned that Japanese and English Wikipedia content structure is so markedly different that "rough interpretation" is perhaps a better description than "translation." Should I still use the WP:TRANSLATE attribution when the content is actually so different? -- TNewfields
@TNewfields: Yes, you should follow the instructions at Help:Translation if any of the content is translated from the Japanese wiki. I believe the templates that are used can indicate that only a part of the article was translated. The appropriate project banner(s) should be added tot he talk page of the article, as well. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:12, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi TNewfields. A template that you and your students can use for this type of thing is Template:Translated page. There are instructions on how to use it given on its documentation page. Basically, you add this to the article talk page of English Wikipedia article that contains includes translated content. As for "rough interpretation", if you're able to read the sources cited in the non-English Wikipedia article and then summarize those sources in your own words, you probably don't need to be too concerned about this type of thing; on the other hand, if you're simply reading the non-English Wikipedia article and then summarizing (i.e. "translating") that content, then you probably should provide attribution for Wikipedia licensing purposes. FWIW, it's not the end of the world if you don't provide attribution in a case like this, but it's better to do so since the copyright holders of Wikipedia article content are technically the users who contribute to articles and not the Wikimedia Foundation. You don't really need to attribute individual users per se for Wikipedia licensing purposes, but rather only the version of the source article that was translated.
As for WikiProject banners, adding relevant WikiProject banners to article talk pages helps to tie everything together and many WikiProjects are set up to receive notifications whenever new articles which fall within their scope are created or otherwise tagged for maintenance or review purposes. This helps interested users keep track of articles and can alert them to articles in need of some king of attention. It's not an exact science though and multiple WikiProjects might cover the same subject matter; so, when you're not sure, you can often get ideas from looking at how similar articles have been assigned WikiProjects. You don't need to be a member of a WikiProject in order to add its banner, but you and your students can pretty much join any WikiProjects about subjects that interest them. They are very informal and often just a way to discuss Wikipedia things with others who have similar interests. Some WikiProjects are quite active with lots of members and an established structure, and, thus, they can be good places to ask for assistance regarding certain types of articles or certain things related to Wikipedia editing. Since you and your students seem to be interested in Japan, you might want to take a look at WP:JAPAN. I believe that Nihonjoe is actually the person (or at least one of the people) who started WP:JAPAN, which makes him a really good person to ask about Wikipedia articles related to Japan. Good luck to you and your students. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:27, 8 November 2022 (UTC)
RESPONSE: Just a quick follow up. I will have students focus on the linguistic aspects of the translation and editing the content down so that it is more coherent. With existing time constraints, it is unrealistic to expect students to do any coding. I will try to get to that on my own during the spring and summer vacations when school is not in session. (When school is in session, too busy to focus on this. Thanks for the links, however. TNewfields (talk) 04:46, 14 November 2022 (UTC)TNewfields
@TNewfields: No one should have to do any coding. That's what the developers do. Wikipedia editors don't have access to the backend of the site. Wiki markup is quite easy to learn and just about anyone can learn the basics in only a few minutes. Anyone editing Wikipedia should spend those few minutes to learn how to use it. It makes their editing much easier, and makes it so others don't have to go back through and clean up their edits. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:49, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

Template:Hidden begin

Hello, I boldly renamed two of the parameters used in Template:Hidden begin (along with other changes). However, you are one of three people who have the template placed on a fully protected page. The parameters changed were bg1 and bg2. This means that your use of the template now has no color. To fix this simply replace any instance of "bg1=" with "titlebgcolor=" and "bg2=" with "contentbgcolor=". You can see which pages you use this template on at Category:Hidden begin with depreciated parameters, sorry for any inconvenience. Terasail[✉️] 22:44, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

@Terasail: Nesting the parameters would have avoides all of this: {{{titlebgcolor|{}}}} and {{{contentbgcolor|{}}}}. That would make it so it would work no matter which were used. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:04, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
I was just trying to make the template simpler overall, and also added |bgcolor= for the entire template, which would have been bg0 which isn't a great name. So I thought just to rename them all. Not thinking about protected userspace pages. I see that it was just a bad decision and will avoid it in the future. Terasail[✉️] 18:33, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi Nihonjoe. You blocked Sodthisstupiddesign recently, and I blanked their talk page to remove their editorial rant. Now they've reverted it back, with an expletive-laden edit summary. Could you please revoke talk page access and undo their edit? Thanks. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 13:28, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

@Drm310: Let them have their rant. I've seen worse on various other talk pages. No one is likely to see their user talk page anyway, as that's the only thing they've edited. I will remove their editing ability on the talk page, though. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:24, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

Edit request

One last edit request to clear the last Tidy Font errors from your pages. Would you adjust on User:Nihonjoe/DYK the following:

Proposed code changes within, collapsing for tidiness

Five cases of:

<font color="darkgreen">日本穣</font>? · <small><font color="blue">投稿</font> · Talk to Nihonjoe</small>

Additionally if you are willing, these other two signatures (one appears twice, the other once) have obsolete font tags. Correcting these will clear the page of all remaining WP:Lint issues.

Two cases of:

User renaming instructions

Hi Nihonjoe. I'm a bureaucrat on the Minecraft wiki - newly forked to https://minecraft.wiki using the Wikimedia wiki software - and I need to rename a user. I don't believe I or any other bureaucrat there has done this; the activity as all been just changing certain rights. I'm hunting around on the English Wikipedia for directions and not finding any. Is there some user interface feature I'm just not seeing, or something I should see when I visit a user page? Is there a tutorial around somewhere? ~Anachronist (talk) 03:47, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

Ah. Disregard. I found Special:GlobalRenameUser and Special:RenameUser, neither of which I have rights to view here. Global rename doesn't apply to the Minecraft Wiki, and unfortunately Special:RenameUser needs to be fixed - the right is restricted to Fandom sysadmins, and since the wiki migrated from Fandom to minecraft.wiki, we need to get that changed back to bureaucrats. ~Anachronist (talk) 03:52, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
@Anachronist: You will need to adjust those permissions in the LocalSettings.php file. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:26, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
Specifically, you need to add $wgGroupPermissions['bureaucrat']['renameuser'] = true; to that file (this is usually down near the bottom), and then remove any usergroups related to the Fandom site (hopefully they are obvious user groups). ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:07, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

Happy Adminship Anniversary!

Please stop trying to humiliate me

I am being painfully polite but I really don't like your tone towards me. I am sticking to our standard SOP on usernames and you just seem to be keen to belittle me on a promo users user page. Why? Secretlondon (talk) 21:25, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to belittle or humiliate you. I apoligize if that's how it seemed. That wasn't my intent.
Usernames of "Name at XTZ Company" are perfectly acceptable, and we shouldn't be requiring or requesting someone change their username if it's along those lines. You seemed to be insisting they change their username even though it was already acceptable under the policy. Dealing with a COI is separate from that. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 02:03, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

Gackt's new revision on Japanese Wikipedia

Hi, please can you help me with the new revision of the article Gackt at Japanese Wikipedia? Two editors who don't have basic clue about Wikipedia editing policy are making disruptive and vandalic reverts - going even to the point of deletion request - while the new revision only needs fixing the grammar, while the old revision is of a very poor quality with many editorial problems. Miki Filigranski (talk) 08:37, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

Anyway, unfortunately the deletion request will pass because I didn't provide URL link although mentioned several times it is from English Wikipedia (on talk page and edit summary). In other words, I need someone to do WP:TRANSLATEUS of the article on English Wikipedia in the form which can be found at User:Miki Filigranski/sandbox.--Miki Filigranski (talk) 14:48, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
@Miki Filigranski: I'm sorry, but I do not have the time to do this right now. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 00:32, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

Request for "userfication" of certain templates and images

Good evening! I hope this message finds you well. :)

I noticed that you were on the list of administrators willing to let editors view deleted articles and files.

Given this, I would like to request the userfication of a few NHL playoff bracket templates that I once contributed to significantly, but have since been deleted. In addition, I am wondering if you could do the same for a handful of now-deleted SVG files formerly on Wikimedia.

I made numerous edits to the templates in question, and I feel I made significant progress in not only improving upon their quality at the time, but towards creating ones that could potentially be used on different pages or projects in the future.

As a result, I would like the opportunity to continue building each of them into a more refined product, by relocating these deleted templates into my user space instead. It would be quite important for me to be able to access each such page's revision history, as a bunch of edits (in addition to older versions that could nonetheless prove quite useful) have been "lost" or hidden somewhere down in its history.

Without any further ado, here are the pages in question:

I believe the final template in this list is the one I was mainly working on, but I am not completely certain, as those edits occurred quite some time ago.

Finally, these are the Wikimedia files I would like to have moved into my user space:

Of course, these images are located over at Wikimedia, but I felt it was unnecessary to make two separate requests on each of your talk pages.

Thank you very much for any help you might be able to provide, and take care!

A Red Cherry (talk) 06:12, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

@A Red Cherry: I've userfied the three template for you:
The images are located on Commons, so there's no need to userfy them. Simply use them from Commons the same way you use any images. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:30, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Thank you very much for all the help!
As it relates to the two images, I cannot access either file, as they do not exist (at least not publicly) anymore. The reason they aren't showing as red links is because they now redirect to two files that used to be similar to the versions of the deleted images at the time. I mostly requested their userfication because there were useful edits to their descriptions and legends lodged deep in their respective version histories, which I would like to use at some point in the future.
Would it still be possible to userfy these two deleted images anyway, or is that not an option for Commons?
Once again, I really appreciate all your assistance!
A Red Cherry (talk) 19:55, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
@A Red Cherry: The exist and are publicly available:
They are both on Commons and are not deleted. It's possible they were updated, though. You can look at the file history on Commons (scroll down to the File history section and find the version you want, then click on it to view it). Regarding userfying the images, images should not be in userspace. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 20:05, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

They were visually very similar, though not fully identical, to the files they were replaced with at the time. However, the underlying XML code structure of each SVG was significantly different, and that was mainly what I wanted to recuperate through userfication. In addition, a number of useful edits have become buried somewhere in each file's revision history, which is no longer publicly available to me now.
Furthermore, both files, as seen in [1] and [2], have indeed been deleted, and I cannot access old revisions to either one, as in [3] and [4]. In addition, the logs for each action can be found at [5] and [6], respectively.
I understand if the userfication of Commons files isn't possible. In that case, would there be any preferable methods for recovering the edit history of each image (and presumably their past versions along with them)?
Once again, thank you very much for your help! I appreciate your diligent assistance with my earlier renaming requests as well. :)
A Red Cherry (talk) 21:47, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

@A Red Cherry: I'm not an admin on Commons, so I can't undelete anything there. You will have to ask over at their admin noticeboard. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 22:57, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

If you are editing this article, and let's say theoretically speaking, you had a close connection to the company, you would need to disclose this as a conflict of interest, would you not? Sagflaps (talk) 04:55, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

What I mean is the standard criteria on Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest#Paid_editing, "An editor has a financial conflict of interest when they write about a topic with which they have a close financial relationship. This includes being an owner, employee, contractor, investor or other stakeholder." Sagflaps (talk) 18:28, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Allegations and your silence

Hi Nihonjoe, I certainly don't want this old story to overshadow your 18+ years of contributions, including 120,000+ constructive edits, a few FAs, and tens of thousands of hours in unpaid time. You deserve a lot of respect for that! Having significantly less experience, I'd nonethelss like to suggest you to consider addressing the growing COI allegations. In my observation, it's usually better this way – the community hates it when privileged editors appear to apply double standard, and then try to avoid scrutiny, dodge questions, and refuse to address doubts. I don't think this case will die. Opposite: in the absence of an honest attempt to come clean, the community will, very likely, sooner or later come down on you like a ton of bricks: [1]

I'm far from judging you – usually there are many sides to a story, and I've seen worse – but you might also like to review your voluntary position as a bureaucrat.

Wishing you well. — kashmīrī TALK 01:15, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

What silence? I have a life outside of Wikipedia, and I can't spend every waking moment here. And refusing to share personal information is not dodging questions or trying to avoid scrutiny. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:12, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

Conflict of interest declarations

Hi Nihonjoe. I saw the discussion on the administrators noticeboard about your conflict of interest with Aquaveo. That probably wasn't a fun experience and I'm sorry that it happened to you. More than one person in the discussion suggested that you should have declared that conflict sooner to avoid all that aggravation. It's too late for that now but I think it might be helpful if you followed the directions here and added "connected contributor" templates to any Aquaveo related articles that you have edited. If you have any other conflicts of interest, this would probably be a good time to declare those before people decide to start deletion discussions about those, too. Counterfeit Purses (talk) 21:04, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for your comments. I think we'll wait for the dust to settle before doing that. It would poimtless to do it on an article that might be deleted within just a few days. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 06:05, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
