Are you still in Japan these days? - Richard Cavell (talk) 08:56, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Not for the last few years. Why? ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 16:49, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
Just wondering. I reckon the Japan-related articles on Wikipedia generally need a lot of work, and I'm looking to focus on it soon. I guess it's because of the fact that the source material is mostly in Japanese. - Richard Cavell (talk) 01:04, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Question from new admin

 • I closed this discussion Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ark (Transformers) as a delete; I don't doubt my decision, but my question is, if someone approaches and asks me about merging some of the content from the deleted page to another article, is that a reasonable request? Thanks. Mandsford 12:55, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
Yes, perfectly reasonable. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 16:49, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Requested move

Nihonjoe -- You may not have noticed that I relisted the projected move of Eulsa Treaty at WP:Requested moves#Current discussions/August 31. It is only prudent for me to alert all contributors in our discussion about changing the name of this article.

Please consider Talk:Eulsa Treaty#Relisting at WP:Requested moves.

On one hand, this can be construed as an unnecessary delay. On the other hand, this ensures the possibility of wider community input which may bring out any points-of-view which remain unstated or glossed over. --Tenmei (talk) 17:08, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Portal:Speculative fiction

I was hoping that OhanaUnited would reply more fully than he has done - I left him some questions on his talk page to which he hasn't responded, and his reply at the discussion didn't answer either all of your questions or all of mine. I would be delighted to close the nomination as "promote", again, but I really can't face OU popping up on my watchlist and reverting all of the steps again. So, unless Cirt does something or one of the other FPoC participants, you may have to wait until OU belatedly confirms that all is well. I'm sorry that your portal nomination has taken so long; this might be the catalyst for some improvements in the system, you never know! Regards, BencherliteTalk 17:42, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

No problem. I think the biggest problem is lack of participation from people. Featured portals do not appear on the main page (as far as I've been able to tell) so people don't seem to care about them much. Maybe we need to figure out a way to feature them on the main page? ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 17:45, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
Maybe a "This week's featured portal" section? ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 17:46, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
I like the idea, but it seems impossible to make any changes to the main page layout / content. Lots of people seem to think that the main page should be changed, but they all pull in different directions! It could be a chicken and egg scenario as well: some would say that the older featured portals could do with improvements to bring them up to scratch, and so shouldn't be highlighted from the main page, to which others would say that highlighting them would lead to increased participation and improvements as a result... There's been discussion about including featured lists on the main page, but despite the vast increase in quality there over the last few years, there's no consensus for doing so - mainly because nobody can agree what, if anything, should be left out to compensate. E.g. there's a crowd that argues for "In The News" to go, as it duplicates (and overshadows) Wikinews; there's a crowd that says that "On This Day" should go, as it's unbalanced in terms of geographical and historical spread as well as linking to articles of less than the best quality. Anyway, to get back to FPoC, perhaps the answer is to add more names to the list of portal directors so that the ever-busy Cirt and Ohana aren't left to do everything, and so that patient nominators like you don't have to wait for weeks for a no-brainer close to be done! BencherliteTalk 17:55, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
I can totally agree on the complete committee standstill which exists for the main page. I don't know that anything needs to go, per se, but it could definitely use some slight restructuring to make things more balanced. I also agree that having more "directors" would help things move along faster. We should nominate you, since you brought it up. :) ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 18:03, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

I liked the "quick links" section so much that I've added it to the portal that I'm building... but I changed most of the icons to try and hide the source of my inspiration from the casual reader! BencherliteTalk 19:20, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

I just realised that you sent me a message querying if I wanted my username in capitals, sorry I thought I might hear by email and have only just found this forum, I'm just figuring out how Wikipedia works.

Please can it be all lowercase as you suggest. Sincere apologies for the error, I hope that this is OK? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Melocotones (talkcontribs) 16:16, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

This has already been done, but in all caps. You need to logout of your Melocotones username and login to your MICHELLECOTTON. Could you do me a favor? I'm still working on a new draft of the page (ideally that will be able to get consensus as a neutral version...although I know that's hoping a lot). However, when I started on the draft, I didn't copy the whole thing to my userspace--only the first part. Since I want to be able to work on the rest of the article at the same time, including on the sources, can you copy and paste the whole thing (the raw text) into my userspace? I created a page, User:Qwyrxian/Original Japan Sea naming dispute for the full "original" text to go. Thanks for the help. Qwyrxian (talk) 06:54, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Koi Article

I was wondering if you could take the time to look at the Koi article and its recent revisions. Recently a version was altered by an established user with the claim that it was vandalism. Yet, all material was sourced, factual, and relevent. In scanning through the prior history, of this article, I also noticed that this user, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Lawrencekhoo, has been insistent that he would not allow others to make edits that updated his. Although others have attempted good faith, factual, sourced edits and have taken it to the talk pages, he has refused to utilize the talk pages first. He has been reverting everything back to the way he wants it without using the talk pages. He has accused others of edit-warring and violating the three revert rule, even though he has reciprocated the exact same behavior.

I also feel that there is a personal bias on his part and a lack of NPOV from him. Based on his user name, he appears to be Chinese American. His edits, coincidentally seem to slant this article with much irrelevant information as to suggest a much higher Chinese influence. His revisions have animal 'Family' level information when it is an article based on the 'Species' level. His revisions also have a lot of information related to a completely separate species. He seems to have been able to get away with what appear to be violations of good faith editing, simply because he has been editing for a while. A look at his edit history on a number of articles though, suggests that he oftentimes abuses his 'seniority' on wikipedia as a means to block others from editing articles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 148.78.243.111 (talk) 05:59, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

I suggest bringing up your concerns at the relevant WIkiProject where those more familiar with this sort of thing can review the information. I am not really that familiar with koi (outside of seeing them and feeding them), so I am probably not the best person to review edits for accuracy on this topic. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 15:27, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

New userbox for which prefectures you've visited

I have made new userbox {{User:UBX/JP47}} which shows an admittedly-cartoony map of which of the 47 prefectures a user has visited. It's not easy to squeeze Japan into a userbox. Since you are active in WikiProject Japan, and I originally got the how-many-prefectures userbox code from your page, I thought I'd ask if you had any comments. Thanks! Example: {{User:UBX/JP47|12|13}} gives:

This user has visited 2 of the 47 prefectures.

You just deleted the user User:Garydubh based on a privacy request. Did you realise that this is a sockpuppet master account (see Category:Wikipedia sockpuppets of Garydubh and deleting his account hides this fact, and his edits from regular readers? People may not know where to look for other records of this editor's actions like Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Garydubh/Archive. Is this a usual for such an editor? We should be able to see who made his edits. Where did he make this request? I would certainly have disputed any deletion of his account for the reasons stated above. Drop me a talkback when you reply. Thanks ww2censor (talk) 16:18, 10 September 2010 (UTC)

Food/drink task force?

Hey there. I was just looking at Category:WikiProject Japan Food and drink task force and I'm noticing that it's rather sparse. Koi Talk Pages

There was an unsubstantiated, false allegation from Lawrencekhoo against me of sockpuppetry on the Koi Talk Pages. A simple checkuser or geolocate will show that the initial post under the Origins section in the Talk Pages was from an IP somewhere in Georgia. If there is a suspicion that sockpuppetry is taking place, then let's research the IP's in question and let's see the results.

I am in California (a Geolocate will also verify that) and have been posting from this IP as fra back as 2005, and on a regular basis since 2007. Also of note, I was editing other articles within the same time period that the other IP was making edits (again, a Geolocate or Checkuser will show that the two IPs are on opposite sides of the country). The request to protect the Koi Talk pages under the claim that socking was occuring was unwarranted, given the fact that no socking has occurred.

The edits in question were initially reverted back by lawrencekhoo with the claim of vandalism. When there was no evidence of vandalism as pointed out by another user, he then claimed that the version introduced inaccuracies which is also false.

This other user, Aquafanatic, was active for a one month period of time and alleged to be a sock of another user, not me. During that other user's period of activity, again I was actively using this IP here in California.

For one, I disagree that allegations of socking should be acted on without proof, as is cleary the case here. Additionally, the statement, "Stop agreeing with yourself and be a man. Carry out your arguments honestly. LK (talk) 06:18, 14 September 2010 (UTC)", is a personal attack which is a violation of Wikipedia terms, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:No_personal_attacks

On two counts as specified:

"Accusations about personal behavior that lack evidence. Serious accusations require serious evidence. Evidence often takes the form of diffs and links presented on wiki. Sometimes evidence is kept private and made available to trusted users."

I consider sockpuppetry to be a serious offense. Being accused of it without proof violates terms of Wikipedia.

" Insulting or disparaging an editor is a personal attack regardless of the manner in which it is done. When in doubt, comment on the article's content without referring to its contributor at all."

The statement 'Stop agreeing with yourself and be a man. Carry out your arguments honestly.' is an insulting, disparaging, personal attack. It is also unfair to not be able to respond to it. The statement points fingers at me rather than address the article's content. And again, its an accusation of sockpuppetry without proof.

I respectfully request that you reconsider the validity of protecting the Koi Talk page. I also request that you do some research on the IPs in question, whether sockpuppetry was engaged in or not. Additionally, I request that you examine the behavior of Lawrencekhoo, specifically the allegations he levels against other editors, and the way he conducts himself in content disputes on articles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 153.48.52.241 (talk) 21:21, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

The page protection had to do with disruption, not anything specifically about the discussion. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 03:34, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
I understand that the page protection had nothing to do with the discussion, it was done due to allegations of IP socking. Those allegations came from Lawrencekhoo and are without merit and were made without any proof, as stated in my explanation above. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 153.48.52.241 (talk) 18:48, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

AFD help

I know that this might be taken wrong, but I need your assistance in saving 3 separate articles that I've had a hand in working on from deletion at AFD. Late last week, with deletion pending on four other articles that I know weren't the best and should have been sections on other articles. A friend and I made those other articles. However, all three of these other articles (two on films, one on a TV special) have been brought to AFD because we suggested that we redirect these articles (Kamen Rider Femme, Kamen Rider Ryuga, Kamen Rider Verde, Kamen Rider Lance) to the new articles that were made within 48 hours of the AFDs' filing (Kamen Rider Ryuki: Episode Final, Kamen Rider Ryuki Special: 13 Riders, Missing Ace). My sources for old children's magazines start after Episode Final was released and stop just before Missing Ace was released. Could you help me find sources for these articles, as they certainly are notable and the films and TV special certainly received plenty of press when they were initially released. Last month I was having issues with finding sources for a 3 year old TV show, let alone an 8 year old movie.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 01:35, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi Nihonjoe

I was surprised by your acquiescence to the request by Donald Duck for yet another name change. So far, that user has kept his previous three names for 6, 9, and 4 months. This request clearly falls under bullet point 3 of WP:CHUG#When changing usernames is probably inappropriate for the reason that "there's no evidence that a user will stick with the new username".

In addition, notwithstanding your encouraging comment, his editing remains frequently tendentious, his manner is often petulant and uncivil, and he continues to behave in ways that garner—or would legitimately garner—warnings. I don't follow CHUG, but logic would dictate that users being permitted to walk away from usernames widely associated with disruptive behavior—especially before there is a consensus that that behavior has ended—is not good for the community. AGF and all that, but people are entitled to know what they're getting.

Bongomatic 04:08, 16 September 2010 (UTC) Should you wish to reply, please do so here. I will watch this page for a few days, so no {{talkback}} or other comment on my talk page is required.

Well, as I don't usually deal with usurpation requests, I wasn't aware of that one. However, if he's really being as disruptive as you indicate, perhaps you should pursue getting him banned? ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 04:33, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
Actually, the guideline I quoted relates to changing, not usurpation (there are sections on treatment of both types of requests on that page).
And while the user's behavior is frequently counterproductive, it doesn't rise to the level of banable—but there are probably quite a number of editors who (rightly) look twice when they see that editor's name on a watchlist and check the edits. Bongomatic 04:50, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
The last username change you refer to was a usurpation, not a regular username change. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:55, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
Ah, I see what you meant when you said "that one" . . . I thought you meant "that guideline". Anyway, the previous usernames and dates were all listed on the editor's user page. As I replied on his talk page to his comment below, I didn't intend to imply that there was any surreptitious intention. Bongomatic 06:30, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
Yup, pretty well-versed in the guidelines and policies regarding changing usernames (and anything else related to usernames). :) ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 06:35, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

The Milhist election has started!

The Military history WikiProject coordinator election has started. You are cordially invited to help pick fourteen new coordinators from a pool of twenty candidates. This time round, the term has increased from six to twelve months so it is doubly important that you have your say! Please cast your vote here no later than 23:59 (UTC) on Tuesday, 28 September 2010.

With many thanks in advance for your participation from the coordinator team,  Roger Davies talk 19:26, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Uploading untagged images

Can you help me try to convince User talk:Rolko this editor that images need to be properly tagged? User added an untagged image on the Ernie Kovacs page two days in a row and has now done the same with the Edie Adams page. User is also changing cited information Edie Adams without giving citations as to why the current citation is not correct.

I left a note on user's talk page trying to explain the process yesterday, but the images without the proper tags keep going up.

Thanks!

We hope (talk) 21:00, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

Well, File:Kovacs Plaque.jpg would be ineligible for copyright as it consists of a photograph of a signature and generic fonts used for a grave marker. The other ones are definitely a concern. If he continues, I would bring it up here (for images and other files) and/or here (for text which may violate copyright). For unsourced information, I recommend bringing it up here. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 21:33, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
It looks like the user shows up daily, adds to the Kovacs and Adams pages, and then leaves without responding to anyone. I would like to remove the images from the Ernie Kovacs and Edie Adams pages as well as revert the change in cited information, but I have no interest in starting an edit war, etc. If you, as an admin, believe it's OK for me to do those things, I will. If the editor returns to the same practices for the third time, I surely will take it up at both boards.
Thanks again!!!
We hope (talk) 21:40, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Since neither individuals are living people, it's not immediately important to remove the information. Feel free to tag anything which appears to be original research with {{cn}} tags. Tag any fair use images which which are not following the fair use policy. If you are reverted, then bring it up at those boards. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 21:44, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Tagged everything with what I hope are appropriate tags; had asked for a citation on text earlier. Also tagged the user's talk page re: images without copyright tags and the lack of citations. (WHEW!!)
Thanks once again!!

FLC National Treasures of Japan swords

Hi! Since you already reviewed a List of National Treasures of Japan, I thought you could help out with the following. List of National Treasures of Japan (crafts: swords) is currently a featured list candidate and listed as Nominations urgently needing reviews which means that it might fail unless somebody (you ;-) ) reviews the list. So far it received two "support" votes and one "oppose". All issues raised in the oppose vote have been addressed (the reviewer, "The Rambling Man") just needs to revisit the page). I'd be happy if you could take the time to review the list and leave comments, questions, suggestions and a vote ("support" or "oppose") on the nomination page. Thanks. bamse (talk) 09:43, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Epic Gilgamech

Dude, what the hell? Epic Gilgamech is not a "hoax" and me and several other classic anime fans are livid about this article's deletion. Can you please cite a source or give SOME reason why you think this anime is a hoax??! If you like, I have several episodes on VHS that I would be more than happy to mail to you, if you will give me your address. AllOtherNamesTaken (talk) 21:05, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

If you can provide sources showing it actually exists, I'll be happy to undelete it. However, none of the extensive resources I have on anime going back to 1917 (yes, the very first anime). I couldn't even find one source for the information. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 04:06, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
Again, I have all of the episodes (and some of my own fandubs) on VHS, but not in any digital format like youtube. I do not know how to transfer VHS to computer video. I am in the process of creating an E.G. fansite, but resources on the show, as you know, are few and far between. The series only lasted six episodes, it was by an unknown studio that immediately dissolved upon the show's cancellation, etc. Once more, if you will give me an address where I can send a few copies of the tapes I have, I will be more than happy to prove Gilgamech's reality. AllOtherNamesTaken (talk) 14:39, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
What we need are reliable sources it exists: newspaper or magazine articles, academic works referencing the series, etc. Additionally, it's extremely unlikely any studio would have been creating a black and white work in 1974, either. Unless you can prove it exists using reliable sources, the article is not coming back. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 16:28, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

Space Symphony Maetel analytical concourse

Many salutations, Nijonjoe!!! I am glad to see that you are doing well for yourself. I see that you have taken an interest in one of my brainchildren as of late; while I am pleased at this turn of events, I do have to question the utility behind the newly-created talk page associated with it. I am not sure what else there is to be done to the »Space Symphony Maetel« episode synopsis page that could warrant any discussion; I would really like to have that explained to me in more detail.

The talk page, as with every other talk page on the site, is to discuss improvements of the article. The talk page was created so the article could be tagged as part of WP:ANIME. Request for mediation of Video games developed in Japan

A request for formal mediation of the dispute relating to Video games developed in Japan was recently filed. As an editor concerned in this dispute, you are invited to participate in the mediation. The process of mediation is entirely voluntary and focuses exclusively on the content issues over which there is disagreement. Please review the request page and the guide to mediation requests and then indicate in the "party agreement" section whether you would agree to participate. Discussion relating to the mediation request welcome at the case talk page.

Can you look at this

These edit summaries by Calton look rather uncivil:

 1. 19:03, 26 July 2010 (diff | hist) Countdown with Keith Olbermann ‎ (Reality check: it's conservative. No whitewashing, please.)
 1. 02:55, 25 July 2010 (diff | hist) Sylvia's Restaurant of Harlem ‎ (It's a reliable source. Don't like it? Not our problem.)
 1. 02:52, 25 July 2010 (diff | hist) Arthur Laffer ‎ (It's a reliable source. Don't like it? Not our problem.)

He has a history of this. While I agree that the edits themselves are ok, the rather uncivil summaries are problematic.

Whoa, STOP the music!!!

Ah, Nihonjoe; we meet again (^_^). I also see that you continue to take an interest here; however, I do think that you have been a bit overzealous in this incidence.  »Space Symphony Maetel« did air twice, Nihonjoe -- first on SKYTV starting on 6 @ August 2004 and again on Japanese Animax Broadcast starting on 21 @ March 2005. I have noticed that Japan has a long-standing pattern of airing anime episodes once a week on the same day every week -- hence the seven day spans between the maiden air dates.

More to the point, the actual episode titles of »Space Symphony Maetel« ARE as you found them, Nihonjoe. There is a batch of this anime that you can leech onto your computer and you can see for yourself if you do not believe me.

Finally, I am at a loss for what you could possibly mean by »saving the translation of the episode summaries for later«. I toiled diligently for each and every episode synopsis that is written on that page to restrain myself from being too pedantic; if I am exerting that kind of effort, I do not think that it is unreasonable for you to acknowledge the fruits of my efforts even if there is a bit of room to refine the end product. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dairi no Kenkyo (talkcontribs) 02:42, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

I have no doubt you spent a long time on the episode summaries. However, the current wording is almost completely unintelligible to anyone other than you. Perhaps you need to be more pedantic as the wording of the summaries needs to be understandalbe by pretty much anyone who reads it. I recommend taking the advice Goodraise left on your talk page. Seeing how other episode summaries are worded will definitely help you with the wording on these episode summaries. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:01, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi Nihonjoe. Back in January, you ended my RFA with 11/25/10. Most of the 25 were due to my lack of experience in admin related areas. Then again in July 2010, I tried again, but failed. I have no intentions of running a self-nomination again; was hoping if you could keep an eye on me and help me with a third RFA whenever you feel the time is right? I hope its not too much to ask... Kind regards. Rehman(+) 03:23, 26 September 2010 (UTC)

The best suggestion I have is to take note of all the areas in which people had concerns, then work hard to address those concerns. That will greatly increase you chances of passing in the future. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to keep an eye on you that closely due to other commitments I have right now. I appreciate the confidence in my ability to judge your readiness, however. Edit revert on Debito Arudou

Just thought I'd let you know that I don't think that User:Nodo gordiano's edits to Debito's page were vandalism. The part about his birth name was actually correct, per both our own article and his blog, so I switched that back. The change to his hometown I think is just a mistake--according to his blog, Debito used to live in Nanporo, but later moved to Sapporo. So you may want to alter your message on the user's talk page. Qwyrxian (talk) 06:40, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

The ref provided only indicates when he was born, not that his birth name was Schofill; that's what I was reverting, and the other edit was also incorrect as well. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 06:46, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

He was saying "空知郡南幌町に家を買ったんです。30年ローンで買ったんですよ。 だから、どこにもいけないんですよ" in this speech, so I thought his house was in Nanporo, not Sapporo. Anyway, I think you better read WP:ATWV carefully. --Nodo gordiano (talk) 06:55, 28 September 2010 (UTC) You say you lived in Japan, so I talk to you in Japanese. 何でもかんでも荒らしと決めつけるのは失礼だよ。不愉快だ。Wikipedia:Assume good faith ここも読んどけ。--Nodo gordiano (talk) 07:06, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but your edits appeared to be completely wrong (and they mostly were). The message I left on your talk page is not rude, nor does it state you are a vandal. It merely states that your edits appeared to be unconstructive. That is a lie, for you clearly stated my edit was "vandalism"([2]). Telling such a lie is not only rude but also stupid. --Nodo gordiano (talk) 21:54, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

And you said "they mostly were (wrong)." First, indeed one out of two edits happens to be incorrect, but it is ridiculous to call 50% as "mostly". Second, simple mistakes and incorrect edits are different from vandalism. You are just bullying newcomers by abusing your adminship, in addition you are unsightly trying to justify what you have done. Just admit you lied. --Nodo gordiano (talk) 06:14, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

Misc translations

I noticed your offer on the RS page. One of my challenges in Eva writing is, unsurprisingly, untranslated materials. For example, I've known for the past 5 years that Hideaki Anno did an interview on Top Runner where he said that the religious references in Neon Genesis Evangelion were 'pedantry', but though the transcript is available, no translation is available. (Google Translate is just good enough for me to verify that that page probably is what it's supposed to be.)

So, I was wondering whether the offer extends to material that might not be used on Wikipedia; if it isn't, do you freelance? (For example, a translation of all the transcripts would be worth a good $50 to me, and I think a translation of just that specific section would be worth at least $10-20 to me.) --Gwern (contribs) 16:26 28 September 2010 (GMT)

I will see what I can do. Feel free to email me more info, but please note that I will be busy for the next couple weeks due to helping to run a local anime convention which begins next week. I don't know that you need to pay me, but if you insist, I'm sure I'll be fine with it. :p ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 04:35, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Okay, I guess subtle humor is not something you understand then, so I'll be blunt: using so many exclamation points in everything you do comes off as very brusque, as if you're shouting (just like using all caps, as you did here). It makes you look like someone with no grasp of proper grammar. From what I've seen of your edits, you are very passionate about whichever topics you are discussing, but there is no reason to always be shouting at people. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 17:05, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

I am going to try a different approach and hope I get through to you. Thank you for your comments. Fair enough. I appreciate the calmer message, though refusing to take critique (note, that's different than criticism) regarding your actions is not beneficial to keeping Wikipedia running smoothly. My initial comments on your talk page were an attempt at addressing the issue through some humor, which you obviously didn't see. I'm sorry that you weren't able to grasp the spirit of that message. We all need to be able to freely work with each other, and (speaking from experience) refusing to accept such critique is not an effective way to do that. Now, if you don't want to accept my comments in the spirit in which they were given, that's your choice and I'll leave it at that. However, refusing to work with people and accept behavioral critique—as you appear to be doing here—will serve to fragment those of us who are working together to improve the encyclopedia. I hope you'll reconsider your stance on this issue. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 19:45, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
You seem to misuderstand. I never said I refuse "to take critque". Humor you should realize is subjective. What may seem humorous or humorous in intent to one person, (especiaaly when meant as a "critique"), could be taken as inane, trivial, annoying and sometimes insulting; especially when coming from a stranger!
I welcome any "critique" or criticism on information I have provided. My discussions with other Wikepedia contributers has always been in a civil manner and illustrates that I have never refused to not work "with people" and want only "to improve the encyclopedia." On the other hand, it is my prerogative, if I feel the criticism or "critque" is not relevant to any information I have posted in an article, and seems personal (or as you say a "behavioral critique") to question why someone I do not know at all and who does not know me, would critique something that does not, in my opinion, require "critique". (Like something as minor in importance as exclamation points in an edit summary. Or should I be flattered that you seem to have been following my edit summaries?) So in this instance let's just agree to disagree and let it go at that.ANASTROFAN (talk) 22:34, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
As I said, if you want to refuse to accept the critique, that's your choice. It was offered in a spirit of goodwill. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 06:05, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

I suggest learning hiragana and katakana first, as well as studying basic vocabulary and grammar. There are various books and lessons available which can help you with this. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 17:14, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
kanji, hiragana, katakana, romaji, which is more common and the easiest? I didn't knew that japanese have 4 types of alphabets :/, i thought they have only one? or isnt it an alphabet? Or is it like Penmanship and Block letters? . And one more question which u maybe know: is chinese, like mandarin or cantonese, harder than japanese?-- ♫Greatorangepumpkin♫ T 17:29, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
Learning kana first will only serve to help you as you then learn kanji. Romaji is pretty easy to learn, though there are several different versions which can confuse the matter. I would recommend learning kana first, then learning basic vocabulary and picking up kanji as you progress. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 19:48, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

B. Valentim presented the results of a Lexis/Nexis search here. This supplements several Google searches.
In the many weeks of so-called discussion thread development, those opposing the move have either been unwilling or unable to present refutation or counterargument; and therefore, I propose we delay no longer.

In other words, I suggest that there is a consensus to act now on the basis of the Lexis-Nexis search outcome. The time has come for this article to be renamed Japan-Korea Treaty of 1905. --Tenmei (talk) 19:44, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

Requesting undelete

Hiya, I come to you because you are listed at Category:Wikipedia administrators who will provide copies of deleted articles. The article FriendsWithYou was speedy deleted as unambiguous advertising / promotion. However it's been around a while, and looking at the history, it was a basically fine (if short) article a while back (before the promotional edits.) If you could restore the article or userfy it for me I'd be happy to revert/clean it up and remove all the promotional material. Thank you for your time, Siawase (talk) 14:39, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Done. It's at User:Siawase/Friends With You. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 16:42, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Thank you very much. Sorry for accidentally linking to the redirect. Cheers, Siawase (talk) 20:59, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

A question about Japanese pronunciation ... if I see a long accent over a vowel, does that mean I stress that vowel in the English approximation of the word? - Dank (push to talk) 22:43, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

Nope, it merely means you hold the length of the vowel twice as long. To break it down simply, each syllable in Japanese is pronounced in the same amount of time, so if each one took one second, then that word would be four seconds long (Ko-n-do-o). Hope that helps. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 04:54, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks so much. Btw, the article we're getting ready for FAC is Japanese battleship Kongō, feel free to jump in. - Dank (push to talk) 12:36, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
But Joe, "Kondō" has just two syllables. As for moras, yes it has four, but I don't think that phonetic research would confirm that "ō" takes twice as long as plain "o". -- Hoary (talk) 12:44, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
In English it only has two syllables, but in Japanese it has four. And I'm not going to get sucked into one of your little semantics arguments, Hoary. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 19:30, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Copy/paste move

Senkaku Islands is copy/pasted to Senkaku Islands dispute losing all the edit histories. Please see Talk:Senkaku Islands#Content Copied/Awaiting Removal. I think the edit histories should be kept to Senkaku Islands dispute and Talk:Senkaku Islands dispute. Please handle this matter. Thank you. ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 23:21, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

I tried to swap the article to keep the edit history to Senkaku Islands dispute, but Senkaku Islands is protected to move. I failed the move. Please restore Senkaku Islands dispute temp to Senkaku Islands dispute and preferably swap Senkaku Islands with Senkaku Islands dispute. I will then swap the contents. ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 00:58, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

Senkaku Islands should absolutely not be moved to Senkaku Islands dispute. It's perfectly fine to create a new article with only the dispute information as long as it's noted in at least one of the first edit summaries that the information was copied over from the Senkaku Islands article. The article will not be moved. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 20:02, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
I am talking about which article should have the past edit history. Almost all of the recent edit history of Senkaku Islands are related to Senkaku Islands dispute. Moreover, Talk:Senkaku Islands is still in use for discussions about Senkaku Islands dispute. Should it be moved to Talk:Senkaku Islands dispute by cut/paste? Senkaku Islands should have been moved to Senkaku Islands dispute and split to Senkaku Islands by cut/paste. ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 20:22, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
The way it was done is perfectly acceptable. Please see the notice on the talk page of Senkaku Islands dispute which incorporates the history of the Senkaku Islands article, too. Only one article can keep the history, and trying to separate it out is too much hastle for very little return, especially when the notice already does what needs to be done. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 20:30, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
It may be a legitimate split by guideline, but it was not a clever split at all. Then how do you deal with Talk:Senkaku Islands which is still in use to discuss about Senkaku Islands dispute? Don't you think it should be moved to Talk:Senkaku Islands dispute instead of cut/past split?―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 20:53, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
No, it should just be left where it is, and any future discussions on the dispute should be moved to Talk:Senkaku Islands dispute. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 20:56, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

Requesting unprotection of Sea of Japan naming dispute

I have requested on Talk:Sea of Japan naming dispute to have the full protection dropped so that I can replace the current article with the draft from my user space. As the original protecting admin, would you like to handle the issue yourself, or would you prefer that I go through WP:RPP? Qwyrxian (talk) 01:06, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

Category/user deletion request

How are you doing Nihon? This is Darin, thank you for your time. I would be very appreciative if you could delete the following category page ([[3]]) and the users listed in that category. I'm happy that you did what you did five years ago when I, out of ignorance, submitted those unrevised articles to Wikipedia, and I'm sorry you had to stand up to that immaturity until early 2009. But that's all over now. I want to move on from this and from Wikipedia so this no longer affects me or anyone else. I have no interest helping Wikipedia since it's anti-capitalist but if you ever need specific help with anything you can just send a message my way and I'll see what I can do. If you can do this for me you will have my thanks. Take care. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.208.41.91 (talk) 20:41, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

I have nominated it for deletion. We will need to abide by that decision. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 04:27, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

It was replaced with an SVG file, so this notice is a little off. Please don't template the regulars. I've deleted it. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 04:06, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

A small step

I have a better response to something you wrote a month ago here.

Responding to constructive criticism here, I tried to restate the point in different words:

"... if the argument manages inadvertently to exclude or marginalize, it is missing the broader point that Wikipedia is a collaborative venture.
"An idiomatic expression is almost applicable (but not exactly): Do you know what I mean when I say that I construe Qwyrxian to be advising me not to throw out the baby with the bathwater."

Aha -- a step in a constructive direction. --Tenmei (talk) 20:38, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
