As an update, I moved the article to "Category: Alleged police brutality". After looking at WP some more, I determined that their were other more similar articles located there. I did remove your notice, as I think it having been under "Human Rights Violations" probably caused a belief that the incident should be more noteworthy than it would be under the lesser category "Alleged police brutality". Wild beasts

In october you put this band up for Afd. I was wondering how they meet WP:MUSIC now? For a start they have signed for the same record label as the artic monkeys (I know that might not sound too notable to you but wait for it.............), also they have had an article in the guardian, and appeared on BBC radio 6 music/ Could you tell me if the band are now notable and meet WP:MUSIC?   • Depending on their educational level, the fathers of you and the boys in this band may well have been to Kendal Grammar School at the same time as me or been taught by my father, Jack Haworth at the Kendal secondary modern school. But that don't gain them any sympathy - I would probably hate their music. In any case, I generally abstain from discussion of bands here. (Who are the Arctic Monkeys anyway?)
But since the article had a solid "delete" vote at AfD, the procedure should be: create a new version of the article at user:Ryanpostlethwaite/Wild beasts incorporating your stuff above; then raise the matter at WP:DRV with a link to your new version. I'm not sure if you'll know the name Robert Talbot? Think he went to that school, but then also became a teacher himself, in fact one of the band members is his son! I've requested a deletion review for Wild beasts, and its entry can be found here (at the bottom of the page). I've tried to show how they meet WP:MUSIC in my user section but its been quite tricky! It seems you don't need my help, but: Please use a different phrase from "critical acclaim" - "References" will do nicely. Make the title Wild Beasts with a capital 'b'. References is much better than critical acclaim, I just couldn't think of a title for the section when I was writing it. I am making references to 'Wild beasts' minus the captital B because thats the title which was originally deleted. If the artile is relisted, i will move it to 'Wild Beasts' ASAP. Removed prod notice

Hi. I removed your prod notice from Firdaus Kharas. It's no longer an autobiography - the original text was unsalvageable so I rewrote. There were more sources available, but due to time constraints I used the first I came across and I stopped at that.

When dealing with a living person already in the encyclopedia, I think it's better to have a very short but sourced article, rather than pages of unverified text that could have come from anywhere.

Personally, I don't feel autobiography is a reason for deletion, but I do agree there are many reasons why it's not a good idea. I don't like letting that cloud judgement of what should and shouldn't be in the encylopedia though. Anyway, you might want to take a look and re-prod, given there is only a single source. I might, if I get time, expand the article later, if the other potential sources I skimmed turn out to be reliable. Cheers, CiaranG 16:27, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

I would like to see autobiography made a criterion for speedy deletion and this article supports that view. The only problem is reliably detecting autobios and other self promotion. -- RHaworth 08:18, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
I think, apart from the semantics of it, we are probably singing from the same hymn sheet. The problem with focussing on autobiography is that we only catch the self-promoters who are innocent newcomers to Wikipedia. The rest will simply disguise the fact, or get someone else to do the dirty work for them. That's why I prefer to focus on the subject itself. Self promotion isn't so hard to spot though is it? Looking at the original article, I can't see why it wasn't a prime candidate for CSD:G11. Perhaps "promote a company, product, group or service" should be extended to explicity include "person"? Help needed...

Hello. I'm a relative new wikipedian and I have problems with image uploading. Your guess was right - I'm not the creator of the uploaded images, but at that moment I wasn't aware of the tag "Promotional". So now I've uploaded them with the valid tag, but it seems I can't add them to my articles!!! Will you be so kind to explain it to me on my talk page? Dreambringer 09:14, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

  • The name you had given it placed it in the (Main) namespace. It therefore appeared in the special:newpages list which I watch (far too much). How does grep work on Wikipedia? -- RHaworth 16:36, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Man, watching for all new pages sounds like a job and a half. I use "grep" generically, when others might say "google" or "query". I'm intersted in metrics, and wondered if there might be a bot that gives "new pages with links only from user pages" *1*. I'm an old hand at quantitative analysis and the internet itself, but a noob at Wiki. Pete

Please do not edit articles which have an {{inuse}} tag, as you did at Edgar Hardcastle. Such articles are in the process of undergoing a major revision. There is no sense in adding cleanup tags as such articles are already being cleaned up. —Psychonaut 03:49, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

your prod of Carleton Palmer

Hi there. I saw your prod tag on Carleton Palmer. I wonder if you think that there is a larger problem here, perhaps worthy of AfD. The users Carletonpalmer, Dwecker, and IP User 68.194.181.19 all seem to be related single purpose accounts. They are involved in self-promotion/autobiography. The related articles include Carleton Palmer, David Ecker, ISALTA and Encyclopedia of Living Traditions in Art, perhaps among others.

I welcomed/warned the non-IP users on their talk pages (User talk:Carletonpalmer,User talk:Dwecker) about WP:COI and WP:AUTO but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears. I suggest that because subsequently, Carletonpalmer created David Ecker. Also, after you prodded Carleton Palmer, the IP user blanked the page. I don't mean to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I am an anti-spam deletionist. These may be notable topics, but the fact that the authors are the subjects all but guarantees that they cannot be WP:NPOV. I am relatively new here, but I have participated in some AfD related to people writing articles about their own companies.

If this is something you can offer guidance in, I would appreciate your help. I would not rule out a bundled AfD of all of the articles until someone else can come along and create them. I think that I have suggested as much on User talk:Carletonpalmer, where, incidentally, the user deleted a prior nn-warn today. MKoltnow 05:50, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

  • If in doubt, AfD them! I strongly believe that all blatant COI articles should go to AfD. Even if the decision is "keep", advertising the article at AfD will often result in third-party input to improve the article. See Jyrki Niskanen above for an excellent example.
Re these, bundle ISALTA and Encyclopedia of Living Traditions in Art in one AfD; David Ecker separately and Carleton Palmer may not need AfD - he has twice blanked the article and I have asked him to be more explicit in requesting its removal. -- RHaworth 15:51, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Business Anthropology

Hi, just thought I'd let you know... Palm Island is currently the Australian Collaboration of the Fortnight. With that in mind I was editing the article and I noticed that no article existed for either Bwgcolman nor Manbarra peoples. Unfortunately at this stage the only information on Bwgcolman I have is, what was available from the coronor's hearings of one of the Palm Island residents who died in police custody. So unfortunately, I can't contribute the pronunciation of the name etc. I am guessing it is a bit of a made-up tribe name, being as it is the name of a conglomeration of people from tribal groups from all over Queensland. Unfortunately it seems mainly trouble-makers and immediately associated people were relocated to Palm Island so it would not have really been condusive to formation of new cultural identity.

I find it hard to see how the word could have anything other than a non-indigenous background though - look at Pama-Nyungan languages, and Bwgcolman wouldn't be out of place. It is, of course, a written english approximation of a spoken word from a non-english language in which gesture is as important as tone and intonation.

Sorry to say, but I can see how Alec got a bit defensive about your comment:

Hello, This article has a problem with its name space link. I doubt it is due to lack of space between two initials at the end of the name. The page will have to be moved to rectify it, if I guess correct. Can you please do that for me? The Wiki style is to put space between initials, isn't it?   • Do the intials come first? Is it Suneetha or Sunitha? "The Hindu" to which the article links seems a pretty respectable organ, so I have used their version (plus a Wikipedia-standard space). I recommend you live with the present title for the moment - I believe that you will get the right to move articles yourself within a few days. I note on her blog she is "suneetha tv". Sales Benchmarking

I recently created my first article on Wikipedia: Benchmarking. Your comment was: "I suspect the whole article is really spam but at least we can take out the linkspam".

I wrote this page intending to help and add value. Sales Benchmarking is a less well known use of Benchmarking, but it often delivers significant results for companies. Too many companies relate to sales as an art, and sales benchmarking injects some science.

Please advise me on how I might make this article more valuable and on which kinds of links are appropriate. As I said in the beginning, I am new to Wikipedia, and I apologize if I did something inappropriate.

Please state clearly on your user page what exactly is your connection to the sales benchmarking industry so we can judge whatyour COI is. I recommend: do nothing to the sales benchmarking article - just create more incoming links to it. NeSSI

I believe you proposed this article Wikipedia: NeSSI for deletion due to it's perception as an Advert. The NeSSI initiative is driven by the chemical industry looking to improve the current design of sampling systems. It is based on the idea of developing international standards that will allow manufacturers to supply components to a mechanical substrate, much as is currently done in the semi conductor industry.

The copy for the article was developed by someone from DOW chemical who has an interest in seeing the success of the initiative, but has not involvement with any of the manufacturering companies supplying the components. This article was posted in response to statements from users asking why they couldn't find information on the initiative in Wikipedia.

Your suggestions as to how to improve/modify this to conform with the spirit of wikipedia would be most welcome. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.181.109.209 (talk • contribs)

Sir, having read the Wikipedia rules regarding sockpuppets...I guess I might appear to qualify -- but then, so does anyone else who recently became active in Wikipedia with a particular focus or interest. I am however NOT a sockpuppet for CIRCORTech as alleged on my page *1*. I am however a Senior Research Scientist at the Center for Process Analytical Chemistry (CPAC) at the University of Washington. Part of my activity at CPAC is related to the NeSSI collaborations with Industry (and CIRCORTech is indeed one of the independant companies that participates in the NeSSI activities) and investigating applications of NeSSI technology within academic research. As clearly stated in our *2* NeSSI page, NeSSI is a collaboration of many individuals representing academic institutions and major corporations, so to assume that anyone who posts on the subject is a puppet of any one company or institution is wrong and unjustified. In fact, I am finding the whole Wikipedia experiance rather unpleasent and distasteful -- your actions appear to me very heavyhanded and without sufficient forethought or investigation. If there are things you don't understand, or are unfamiliar with, why not utilize the talk features *3* built into Wikipedia to gather additional information prior to making arbitrary decisions? A simple post to my talk page would have cleared my affiliation and relationship to CIRCORTech *1*. Similarly, rather than dismissing our contribution by pushing for its deletion, a post for additional information or clarification in the NeSSI Talk page would have been a more civil course of action. Since I am not clear on how to handle the sockpuppet issue, I will be cross posting this to the [[1]] page and my talk page.Veltkamp 00:10, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

*1* Sock puppet allegations withdrawn unreservedly. Creation of proper user pages by yourself and CIRCORTech would also have prevented such allegations and would have been an honest thing when working on an article where you have a strong conflict of interest.
I am very sorry if you are finding the experience distasteful. I could claim that I have actually been very restained. Bear in mind that I could have taken Ryan's copyvio tag at face value and simply deleted the article.
*2* "Our" article. I don't want to make too much of this, it could just be read as "the article we have been working on". But please read ownership of articles. It may be one of the things that is making the experience unpleasant: Wikipedians know that they can edit any article!
*3* As far as I am concerned an AfD debate is simply one of the many talk features built in. I like it because it is widely read and hence gives the best chance of getting a good consensus.
I suspect the conclusion will be that you will be allowed a short article here announcing the NeSSI project. You may well feel the need for a project wiki to enable the members of the project to share ideas. For that, note that Wikipedia is not a free host - the MediaWiki software is available to run on, for example, the University of Washington servers. -- RHaworth 06:17, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Re: 25kV AC

Noticed that you re-directed a page Railway Electrification - 25 kV, 50 Hz a.c., Overhead Line to this page to 25 kV AC. I would love to hear your explanation, and why you feel that 25 kV AC (a voltage!) is more meaningfull and clear.

Also, what are your credentials and background on railways, and in particular electrification.

I think what I am saying, is stay out of things that you are not qualified to contribute to. I mean, you are not even a member of the WikiTrains project.

  • The longer title is Railway Electrification - 25 kV, 50 Hz a.c., Overhead Line. Please temper your remarks and remember that Wikipedia is a collaborative project. It only requires a minimum amount of technical knowledge and it certainly does not require "membership" of any project for me to identify a fork when I see one. Can you really justify the existence of two separate articles?
If nothing else, the longer title has incorrect capitalisation on "electrification", "overhead" and "line" also non-standard lower case and dots on "a.c.". -- RHaworth 10:49, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps it would have been better to have made a comment in the discussion page on what you were intending to do, BEFORE doing it. Like you I am trying to make improvements, and you have just undone a lot of work that was going on to remove a page that was highly inadequate, and replace it with a much better one.   • The collaboration was simply to point out to you that content forks are not allowed on Wikipedia. My first reaction was that you had created Railway Electrification - 25 kV, 50 Hz a.c., Overhead Line in ignorance of 25 kV AC but on reading the text of both, it seems obvious that you were aware of the shorter title and had still created the longer title as a fork. You have just undone a lot of work - please do not talk nonsense - how long would it take you to copy your text from the long title to the short title?
I will admit that I am not entirely happy with the short title - I would prefer Railway electrification at 25 kV AC. But unless you are prepared to change the forty articles which link to "25 kV AC", we will leave it where it is. -- RHaworth 12:18, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

My RfA

Thank you for your support in my recent RfA. I think valid criticisms were raised in areas that I need to work on, so I've withdrawn my name. I intend to work on addressing the concerns that were raised, and think I need to work contributing without allowing myself to become as stressed as I have been at times, which did result in some inappropriate behavior. This is a mistake, Telecom INT and INT Management are two different schools inside the INT which is an education and research institution.   • The article was deleted as blatant advertising. For example it contained five links to "Long Island Economy Homapge" although they were in fact different - and what on earth is an "homapge". If you have the bare-faced cheek to request its re-instatement, you may do so at WP:DRV. Ormus matter

Request to undelete Ormus matter, which is now placed under User:Sloth_monkey/ORMEs&oldid=104833326

I can recreate the entry Ormus matter myself, to avoid entanglement with that other writer, Sloth_monkey.

Before I started writing the article on Ormus matter, I checked the skeptic websites (like http://www.skeptic.com/) for "ormus", and found ormus criticism to be remarkably hard to find. I also found there were Wikipedia articles about topics like Odic force, Orgone, Cold fusion and Acupuncture, so I wrote about Ormus.

A Speedy Deletion had been done on it, seemingly in violation with the Wikipedia Policy: I could not in Wikipedia:Deletion_policy find any deletion cause applicable to my article, so I believe the correct procedure would be to insert an appropriate flag.

The deletion seems to be caused by a previous deletion of an article whose contents and author I don't know: Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/ORMUS (Can a topic be banned?)

Eight persons voting Delete clearly didn't know the Wikipedia policy as written up here: Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view/FAQ#Pseudoscience (And the 9th one evidently didn't know the problem with interpreting vowelless writings like Hebrew.)

That old deletion request criticized "Anti-gravity properties. Super-conducting at room temperature. Philosopher's stone." I only mentioned one of these, describing an observation which led a physicist to mention super-conduction. And I discuss the observed apparent Meissner effect, in contrast to superconduction it real conductors. But I see now that I didn't properly emphasize how the notion of room temperature superconduction clashes with present physics, but assumed this to be known.

If ormus has a weak standing in physics, it still has validity as a phenomenon of our society: The Yahoo ormus discussion group http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ORMUS/ has more than 1700 members. OlavN 09:09, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

I consider that all the objections raised in the AfD discussion were equally applicable to your article and therefore, even though you may have created your article totally independantly of the original ORMUS article, nevertheless I consider I was fully justified in speedily deleting your article as a re-post.
Personally I would only allow the article to be re-instated if it was presented as a case of an hoax and snake oil product. Regarding your examples above (and please get into the habit of creating wikilinks!): Odic force, Orgone both make it clear in their first sentences that they are hypothetical concepts. Cold fusion was a bit of good-faith, good science which was proved invalid. Homosexualist

Please do not restore prod tags to articles after they have been removed. If you look at Wikipedia:Proposed deletion especially the section called Conflicts you will see that the tag should not be restored no matter what. I did look a the diff display, but couldn't see the actual change. Was it a space or something out of line? I am still learning the cut-n-paste method of archive creation, but my page is not really all that new; it's been up since arounf the middle of last year...

Trams and Light rail

I understand this is a fork but there are respective section in both pages where should be merged and it is sort of like a work in progress i have not changed and will not change the original article without the support of the other member. I have made a discussion about the subject on the Talk;Light rail page about the subject and while i was waiting for i though i could work on some section that do need to be merge to stop duplication these sections would be Trams and Light Rail around the world and History and Development of Trams and Light Rail.

Autobiographical

  • You are right. Autobiography is not a deletion criterion. But "undisputed prod" is a criterion. I don't keep records but if you search my contributions backwards from Jan 31 you will not see any prod tags that have been removed by the admin who was deleting expired prods.
I suppose I use "autobiography" because a) it always seems a bit cruel to tell people they are non-notable and b) some articles fall into the class of "probably notable but needs too much work to re-write in WP style". -- RHaworth 00:07, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm afraid that somewhat obscure economic theories are beyond my scope, so I have to admit that I don't feel confident reviewing the previous deletion debate in order to use it as a point of reference for listing this one for deletion. Real Samba FC

Real Samba was not a work of fiction, they are highly rated in the Oxfordshire area and around banbury. The victory over Trotters FC made the local newspaper and they also appeared on the local and national news several times. If you Google Real Samba or search for the Spiceball Championship it brings up thousands of results. If other local teams are ok to be accepted on Wikipedia then Real Samba FC needs to be there too. KKE Architects, Inc.

No doubt you hear this all the time, but I am surprised you speedily deleted my article. I made every attempt to streamline and notarize the article before reposting KKE Architects, Inc. (with a copy here after it was initially deleted by Chairboy). This article is not “reposted spam”.

I followed the recommended and longstanding wiki outline of architectural firm “Skidmore, Owings and Merrill”. The article concisely states the firm description, with no self-promoting gratuity, and unbiased 3rd party references. The article provides a brief synopsis of “notable” existing and proposed buildings. The article also provides a non-promotional history timeline, which is informative and educational to an architectural firms progression.

  • In my book, "notarize" means to swear a statement before a notary. I think you may mean "annotate". The first thing I want to see is your user page created with a statement of who you work for. Taking out the excessive bold from your article would be a few minutes work but its presence does not endear us to the article. But the real problem remains the total absence of "third party" references to the company. The link to prleap.com may be discounted since that website states its purpose to be the distribution of press releases. "Insult"

Did you by chance actually look at the article as it was posted when I put that tag on it? It's not in the same form it is now (now tagged as a copyright violation) - there have been c. 15 edits to date. If you look at it in the form that I saw it, someone had apparently simply cut and paste a bunch of paragraphs... no explanation, no source, no nothing, by someone who is almost a SPA (c. 30 edits to c. 3 articles, if I remember correctly). Given that, I think that at least part of the criteria for speedy deletion apply: ...incoherent page with no meaningful content."

Regarding incoherence, it wasn't the "asdfjksdfjkl;pwroei" kind of incoherence, but if you look at the first paragraph as someone who has no idea what this is, it's not really coherent:

3 I am Master of this College,
4 What I don't know isn't knowledge.

I didn't see it as fitting to be tagged as simple "no context", as it was too long, but given that it was just a bunch of paragraphs with no explanation, no context whatsoever, which would fall, IMHO, in the G1 category.

If you've done any new page patrol, you've seen the like - someone cutting and pasting chunks of texts (obvious, like this one, due to the lack of any semblance of wikification) with no explanation on them. Some of them quite short, and some of them doctoral theses in length. And, quite interestingly as of late, some of them actually missing the paragraphs beginnings/ endings! This seems to me to have fallen into this category.

So, it clearly wasn't an "insult" on any august institution, it was merely a tagging of something that people who don't know what "The Masque of B-ll--l" is, simply reading a bunch of non-contextual lines of verse out of context, would never know what it is. SkierRMH 06:41, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Deletion of Veolia Water

Could you please explain why you deleted Veolia Water. You cited a duplication yet I'm unable to find any other entries. Thank you Shaunsummers 09:04, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

  • I find your message a trifle too ingenuous for my liking. I deleted Veolia Water because, at a quick glance (which is all that any new article gets during my new page patrolling) the article seemed to be a duplicate of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies. I gave the latter article a {{db-spam}} tag and that got deleted - as you know well but did not admit in your message.
The description on Image:Areas.jpg is quite explicit: you created the image so you must be part of the communications team at Veolia. So the articles are advertising: we were right to delete them. I note that even the French Wikipedia does not have articles on "Veolia Water" or "Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies".
I suggest that you:
  • re-create the titles "Veolia Water" and "Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies" as redirects to Veolia Environnement
  • add brief details of the two companies to Veolia_Environnement
  • sit back and wait. If the companies are notable, other people with no COI will expand the article.

  • There is absolutely no need for placeholders. They are deprecated. A missing article creates a red link and indicates the need for an article. A placeholder masks that fact. Civ-Online speedy deletion

I am aware that someone tagged my article Civ-Online for speedy deletion as it wasn't notable. Could you please elaborate on what exactly the problem was? I am the creator of the site in question, and I have seen many other mmorpgs on wikipedia. I fail to see how it was spam as I followed the same format as other mmorpg/MUD articles and I did not write anything dissimilar to those.

  • It is most emphatically not a free encyclopaedia for everyone. The content, as you are discovering, is most strictly controlled - everyone is allowed to contribute providing they create the right content. Yes, you must wait and probably more than a month. Advertising is forbidden, writing about your own stuff is strongly deprecated.   • Yes, you did the absolute minimum. You can see from my edits that a little more tidying might have been in order. Also you could have redirected Story Mode. Incidentally how did you open Story Mode to do the copy-n-paste? I have never found a mode that puts "Retrieved from" at the end of an article.

Would you be willing to help me one more time? It's about formating tables again. I would like to turn dashes invisible (font-color should match table's bkg-color). My Web knowledge is about html and css : see accreditation.freesurf.fr ...and I am not sure about the logic of applying styles on wiki nor am I willing to start learning. I just need the basics so, if you could format one table I will then be able to keep on going on my own.

Another thing I consider essential with my table is to have numbers right-align.

I tried to figure these two things out before posting this message by taking a look at the code related to tables on Double-entry bookkeeping page.

  • No putting it at the top is just a minor irritation - I click the history tab to see what is new! I have done a bit of tarting - click the history tab and use the diff display to see what I have done. I have used the trick of font-color=bkg-color but it looks like a nasty fudge - the text shows up if users try to select it with the mouse! I believe that it is not actually forbidden to create tables here in pure html. But wiki markup is preferred. I hope I have given you the requisite hints. -- RHaworth 07:14, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
