How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. I've done a little copyediting and have corrected a few minor mistakes, although I think the architecture section could benefit from another going-over, it not being a speciality of mine. The content seems pretty secure, but I think a more modern source demonstrating the castle to still be part of the Blairadam estate, and perhaps generally discussing the castle's relation to the house, would be useful if it exists. Hi Pickersgill-Cunliffe, not an expert but I'll have a run through the architecture section. I had a look on ProQuest and found a newspaper article in The Scotsman that gives it as belonging to "Dowhill", which ran an open garden day. From that I've found some mentions, eg. this 2015 newsletter and this contractors website that place it with the Maitland Dougall family of Dowhill House (which is the property immediately north of the castle) - Dumelow (talk) 12:49, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bruxton. I am not an expert but I don't think you can claim fair use at all for a structure that still stands and is publicly accessible. Correct license[edit]

I believe I found the correct license for the image in the Door Tree article. I added it as one of the photos in the article. License for "Never published before 2003 and created before 1902". Right an exaustive online search does not reveal anything. I read about the other guy in the photo J. Walter Basset and they discovered some trove of photos. Looks like I can semi-confidently say that the photo was likely discovered in 1975, published in 2011 from an attic in Mt. Carmel. And he died in 1968. I went down the rabbit hole. I am aware that you have created more than 700 DYK. In my opinion, a problem arose from this one because it crossed a line from history to medicine. I recommended that the DYK for Bald's eyesalve be rejected and that the article itself be radically revised, because none of the evidence of function meets WP:MEDRS. In my opinon, an article can exist with references to the history of this medevial treatment, but any mention of science supporting functionality be deleted. New administrator activity requirement[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

  • The IP Info feature has been deployed to all wikis as a Beta Feature. Any autoconfirmed user may enable the feature using the "IP info" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features. Autoconfirmed users will be able to access basic information about an IP address that includes the country and connection method. Those with advanced privileges (admin, bureaucrat, checkuser) will have access to extra information that includes the Internet Service Provider and more specific location.

Hi Pickersgill-Cunliffe, thanks, good to be back! I stopped partly because of my usual lack of focus but also I had a concern over suitability (perhaps this listing was best served by the existing category system). At the time I started it there were no others of similar scope, but now I see we have List of U.S. general officers and flag officers killed in World War II and List of Russian generals killed during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine that have survived so perhaps time to reinvigorate efforts to get this to mainspace. I initially sourced the list entirely from Red Tabs but some kind editors made me aware of a couple of others not listed there; they need to be integrated into the list. There may be others, at some point I will try searching on the CWGC site to check. More than happy to work together on this one, if you are willing? - Dumelow (talk) 11:32, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I admit that I'm not the best at identifying notability for list articles, but I assume having one complete book on the subject plus various wider works discussing general officer deaths (on the topic of lions led by donkeys etc) makes this one a good possibility. Note that I created list of British general officers killed in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the sources of which run on a similar basis. Yes, I think I've come round to the same opinion (just realised I started my list in 2014, what an age ago that feels!). I'm away from my copy of Red Tabs but I'm sure one of the main thrusts is of dispelling the myth of the chateau general, which would make some good material for the introductory paragraphs. Excellent work on the Napoleonic list, by the way. Will look to start checking the list against the CWGC but feel free to add whatever you like, especially on the background, I don't think I have much in the way of sources to hand - Dumelow (talk) 16:39, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Will take a more in-depth look into what can be written shortly - as of right now my FWW knowledge is almost completely limited to what I learned while writing Roland Haig! Dove aqueduct
Not familiar with it, but will look for a copy, thanks for the recommendation. Brindley's Dove aqueduct is just downstream from the mediaeval Monks Bridge, River Dove, the article for which I wrote a couple of years ago, and very deserving of its own article. Oh, good find GZWDer. It didn't come up in my search of the 'Times back archive as the announcement didn't have his full name just "John William" son of "Mr and Mrs Peter Giffard". The Christening was at Brompton for some reason but its presumably the same man as the date is right. One of his god parents was Airey Neave, interestingly enough. I note that per this, Randle Barnett Barker should have a usable image in vol. 10 of The War Illustrated, but I can't seem to find an open copy of anything above vol. 9. Any ideas? The War Illustrated lists Brigadier-General Francis John De Gex here. He doesn't seem to be included in Bloody Red Tabs, and a little googling suggests he may have died of illness or wounds while serving as Commandant, Rouen. It loads in in no seemingly logical order, and I note that other similar lists provide separate tables for each rank of man killed. Also possible to organise by year. No real preference, though I suppose by rank perhaps. This search at the CWGC should give you all the generals they consider to have died during the war (and includes ones not listed by Davis, which I think are generally non-battle related deaths), though it also picks up men who served as "general servants" which you'll have to disregard! - Dumelow (talk) 18:48, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Have created an initial list of the lieutenant-generals for your edification. Think changing "died of wounds" to "wounds received" works better, considering the header is already "cause of death". Also, I see your note about Henry Normand MacLaurin, but don't think he ever served in the British Army? Others that I don't think ever served in the British Army such as William Holmes are already listed. Am I missing something, or is this list a little more international than promised? I've started adding the CWGC generals, there's a lot as it includes those died of accident/illness on active service not related to active duty including those who died post-war. It might be worth introducing a colouring or something to indicate those listed in Red Tabs as died directly related to the war. I hummed and harred a bit on whether to add the Surgeons-General listed on the CWGC, I've included them for now as the ones I checked seemed to hold general officer ranks in the various medical corps (I didn't include the navy surgeons-general) - Dumelow (talk) 18:54, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Assume you're not including the post-war ones? The end of the war would be a useful solid boundary. I agree that a colour might be useful (perhaps a shade over the name, similar to Order of battle at the Battle of the Nile?) in differentiating between those who died any which way and those who were killed as a result of action. Agree with keeping it simple. Perhaps brackets afterwards if a specific case needs further explanation. E.g. I think the Edgar William Cox drowning has also been viewed as a suicide. Generals[edit]

You archived the thread mid-way through me adding to it!
Have continued organising the tables; started shortening long names (mostly removing middle names) to increase readability. A couple of queries you might be able to help with though:

  • Hoghton is down as "poisoned", do we have any context for this? I'm not sure what to put him down as
  • Are you aware of any good sources for brigade names? We seem to be moving between "[Number] (Infantry) Brigade" and "[Number] Brigade" for infantry brigades, and I'm not sure if one is more accurate than the other or if something else is at play with the names

Hoghton's covered in Red Tabs, he was one of many died after eating herbs gathered during the Siege of Kut to relieve their hunger. Perhaps "accident"? Sorry, not done much on the generals recently, but will try to dive back in. Don't really know much about the brigade names, I'll probably have used whatever was stated in Red Tabs. Going by the precedent of British infantry brigades of the First World War we can probably do away with "(Infantry)"- Dumelow (talk) 19:10, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Will edit names as suggested. Thoughts on adding a column for branch, as I did here? I'm trying to name the units as accurately as possible, e.g. "1st Division" rather than "1st Australian Division", and it might be a useful way to make the officer's nationality/situation clear. Regarding WP:ERRORS reports...[edit]

Hey, I just noticed that you are actually an admin. You know, you're allowed to make corrections all by yourself. The errors page is to get the attention of an admin to fix an error because one cannot oneself. Hi Jayron32. I do make changes, usually to delete from the templates uncited stuff currently on the main page, but prefer to at least get a second opinion and give people chance to fix or replace the article. I do also fix articles by rescuing dead links, adding references etc. where it is relatively easy to do so. However there is a limited amount of time I can dedicate to this and my primary focus is content creation. I only recently started looking at the main page content when I realised how much of it wasn't within guidelines, particularly POTD, OTD and FL. Compliance with WP:V is a major problem - if readers can't trust information we have actually selected to feature on the main page then it is a poor advert for the rest of the project. Thankyou for all you do to action the reports, I know it is an unending task (but it shouldn't be if whoever writes the info actually checks it) - Dumelow (talk) 17:53, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, and there's a very useful additional benefit that it's clear to all quite how many errors there are in the templates every day, and a faint hope that those preparing the various sections might take note and check things more thoroughly themselves going forward. My only point was that Dumelow could spend the same effort and just fix the template directly. Fixing errors never requires prior approval, and as he has the requisite user permissions to edit through full protection, it has the same effect as asking other admins to do it for him, with the added benefit of getting done sooner. Reports from non-admins, as TRM used to do on the regular, are of course much appreciated. But if someone is already an admin themselves, there's no benefit (and indeed the drawback of making someone else do the work, and the lost time of it not getting done promptly) of reporting rather than just fixing it. Hannyngton[edit]

Have some difficulties re Hannyngton. His command seems to have changed through the East African campaign, from variously numbered East African brigades to the eponymous Hanforce. I think you had an extraneous "|" in the link, this link works (for me at least). Very strange, the medal card preview certainly has "Indian Army Maj Gen" written on it. There's a second medal card for him here that also says "Maj Gen (T)", presumably indicating it was a temporary rank. His command of 3rd East African Brigade definitely followed command of the 2nd (page 231). Marescaux[edit]

Marescaux is an interesting story, is it not? Query here. Per this he died of cerebral hemorrhage brought about by the constant bombing of Dunkirk while he was Colonel COmmandant, Dunkirk. Yes, just saw that one. The Times of 19 November however has the following:
"Gerald C. A. Marascaux, to the Gleaner, in command when relieved by the Hussar, Cuthbert G. Chapman, to the Hussar, in command when relieved by the Gleaner"

Realised that IWM holds an image of Marescaux here. I'm aware that lots of IWM images are usable on commons/wikipedia, but have never done it myself. Any idea whether this can be used? It'd be PD if it was taken by a British government photographer but the back indicates that it was purchased from the studio of Elliott & Fry. It doesn't give the name of the photographer but it is potentially still in copyright. It's part of the "Bond of Sacrifice" collection which was made with a view to publishing short biographies of all officers killed in the war. Because of the number killed they didn't get beyond the first two volumes (1914 and Jan-Jun 1915) but by virtue of date of publication they are now fair game and a handy source of info and photos of those killed in the early war (I have both volumes on my bookshelf) - Dumelow (talk) 16:18, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon Chesney Wilson, MVO, Commanding the Royal Horse Guards, who was killed in action on the 6th November, 1914, was the eldest son of Sir Samuel Wilson, M.P., and was born on the 3rd August, 1865. He joined the Royal Horse Guards from the Militia in May, 1887, becoming Lieutenant in De- comber, 1888, and Captain in November, 1894. He took part in the South African War, during which he was on the Staff as A.D.C. to Major-General Baden-Powell, Commanding the Mafeking Frontier Forces from August, 1899, to May, 1900, and A.D.C. to the same officer after appointment as Major-General, South Africa, from May to July, 1900. He was present at the defence of Mafeking, including actions of the 26th December, 1899, and 12th May, 1900. He was twice mentioned in Despatches ("London Gazette," 8th February and 10th September, 1901), and received the Queen's medal with three clasps. He was promoted Major in January, 1908: Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel in October, 1907: and succeeded to the command of his regiment as Lieutenant-Colonel in October, 1911. Lieutenant-Colonel Wilson married, in 1891, Lady Sarah Isabella Augusta, sixth daughter of the seventh Duke of Marlborough, and left no issue.
