A new source on Cerebral Folate Deficiency[edit]

Good evening, David! I came across a new review article about Cerebral folate deficiency - in your opinion, is this review good enough to be cited/quoted in the CFD article? Review: PMID 30916789 Hope you are doing fine! Cheers from Russia, ---CopperKettle 14:52, 17 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely a valid ref, and provides info to improve the CFD article. David notMD (talk) 16:37, 17 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Minimal Niacin dose for intramuscular injection enough for a flushing[edit]

Thank you for your edits of Niacin. There was a minimal dose specified to produce flushing. However, it was not specified whether it was an oral dose or IM/IV dose. Probably the oral one. If so, we should clarify that. Do you have a good source at hand? Also, it seems that for IM/IV path, even doses as small as 10 mg are enough to produce flushing. Don't you know where can we find the source for that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxim Masiutin (talkcontribs) 20:00, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In a country where I live (Republic of Moldova), nicotinic acid is only available in pharmacies, as a separate substance, in injectable form only. The oral form is only available in small doses as a vitamin-B complex together with other vitamins. In Russia, situation is the same - the main form is injectable, albeit the tablets of nicotinic acid are avaialable as a serarate substance, the injectable form is more widespread. That's why I have asked to you emphasize on the form of niacin. By the way, I have substantially edited the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CYP4F2 today. Could you please review it, maybe you may have some ideas on how can I improve it? Thank you very much in advance for your feedback. -- Maxim Masiutin (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 22:38, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Quite an impressive article! Thank you for your contributions :) As you probably know, an editor of your experience can go ahead and move drafts directly to the mainspace instead of waiting for the often months-long queue - but there is nothing stopping you from continuing to use AfC if it is your preference. Liance Yes, >40,000 edits, but only my third attempt at creating an article. Planning to send it to AfC made me be more conscientious. I am going to let this 'age' for four months, then with fresh eyes, prep for a GA nomination. David notMD (talk) 11:40, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

citation needed[edit]

About your comment here about leaving the citation needed rather than deleting. I find that the prevailing attitude in the circle of editors who work with medical articles the most is that statements without citations must be immediately deleted. This is not exactly my belief, but it is the prevailing one. It is what it is. MarshallKe (talk) 12:38, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Sesame allergy[edit]

On 18 September 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Sesame allergy, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that because of the increasing prevalence of sesame allergy, the U.S. will join the EU and Canada in 2023 in instituting mandatory food labeling? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Sesame allergy. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Sesame allergy), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi David. I know you were hit by COVID and I hope you are all recovered (I saw your recent post at the Teahouse). I'm not sure whether you intend to start working on Mertbiol's suggestions but I'd be happy to help with the workload, probably from Sunday onwards. Is that OK and if so are there any bits you would specially like to hand over to me? Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:53, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Mike Turnbull, Mertbiol - Thank you both for offer and patience. Actually, intending to start my replies to the GA review today. As for the medical path, first I got COVID and started Paxlovid. Five days later my wife tested positive and started Paxlovid. Five days after ending treatment, I tested positive again (am now negative again), and five days after my wife's treatment she tested positive again (and then today, negative!). Luckily, rebound symptoms were not too severe for either of us, and no evidence at present for post-COVID symptoms. David notMD (talk) 15:59, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir#Rebound is quite common and one of the reasons that I don't think that therapy will be a long-term winner. Provided one is vaccinated I don't think most people need anti-virals as well. My own infection with omicron earlier this year proved to be mild, fortunately. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:06, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have created an article for the above individual, completely oblivious until the final seconds of posting it to the mainframe, that there was an ongoing draft article for her. My apologises if I have trodden on any toes - purely accidental. Two thoughts - firstly, obviously anyone is welcome to add to the article I have created from information in the draft; secondly, I am slightly puzzled as to why a draft article has remained as such for years, and so many editors have added to it, without it ever 'going live'. Anyhow, we are where we are. - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 11:16, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Derek R Bullamore my editing involvement in this was strictly drive-by; I have no skin in this game. David notMD (talk) 15:40, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

BluesRock007 You had an abandoned draft created by someone else back in 2020 (Draft:Eliza Neals) unabandoned earlier this month. Separately, User:Derek R Bullmore created an article about her, leaving a note on your Talk page to this effect. A third editor removed the connection to the draft, so that it now forwards to the article. What I suggest is that you look at the article and see if it can be improved. Although the draft no longer exists, if you click on Veiw history at the existing article, you can see and retrieve the content you had previously added to the defunct draft. I suggest you copy interesting parts of this to your Sandbox and then see if those parts are worth adding to the article. David notMD (talk) 15:40, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

John Maynard Friedman Ericnex13's account is less than a week old. Yes, all edits to date have been reverted. Ericnex13 has been warned. I am willing to see if behavior improves before recommending blocking. P.S. Coincidently, I live in Maynard, Massachusetts. Maynard was a common surname in England, dating back centuries (also as Mainard). In our instance, Amory Maynard moved to a small community informally named Assabet Village in 1846 and built a large woolen mill. When it came time to apply to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for a forma name in 1871, given that he employed most of the people and owned most of the housing, it was "unanimous" that the town was named after him. David notMD (talk) 06:01, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't suggesting a block, my concern was more of giving mixed messages. Water under the bridge now.

Teahouse thread[edit]

Hi, David, just to give more context to what happened in that Teahouse thread: The original post was made by The Anti-patroll, but the second was made by The Anto-patroll, a completely separate user who was registered *after* both the initial post and my reply to it. Both of the second user's edits were referencing the long-term abuse account Willy on Wheels; it's almost certainly not *that* LTA, but there are other LTAs that like to imitate that one. Either way, it's an extremely strong indicator that it was a vandalism-only account, attempting to perform a joe job on the original Teahouse poster, hoping a hasty admin would mix up the two due to the similar usernames and block the wrong account. Given this context, I don't believe it is unduly harsh, nor a record for blocking an obviously bad-faith account (and that it would take quite a bit more than "I was being childish and stupid and immature, and will never do it again" to get them unblocked), but as always you're welcome to seek a second opinion or whatever else you want to do. Multiple micronutrient supplement Looking to improve for translation. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 19:58, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Doc James The values in the product do not all match up with either the US or EU recommendations for pregnant women. One way to enrich this table would be to add columns showing the U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowances and the EU Population Reference Intakes for pregnant women. This would beg the question as to how to address the differences if the difference are large. For example, US and EU recommend 600 IU for vitamin D but this table had 200 IU. David notMD (talk) 20:44, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Yah they give explanations for why they used lower iron amounts (vitamin C improves absorption). I imagine their are explanations for the other values. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 21:47, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Found it[1] The WHO recommends 5 ucg/day (200 IU) for pregnant women and most others. Page 54. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 21:54, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Doc James Yes, vitamin D was the most distant from US and EU, so good to see where that came from. I considered folate at 400 as significantly lower than US and EU, both at 600, but the latter two were for dietary folate equivalents, with the understanding that a supplement has 1.7X the bioavailability of foor sourced. Ref 2, page 54, pointed out that the product in the table incorporated 400 of supplement, equivalent to 680 of dietary folate equivalent, and thus not lower than the other two values. I saw also that the ref your listed has 55 mg vitamin C for pregnancy and 70 for lactating. Let me know if you feel that the article would be better with US and EU columns abd explanation for the differences. I would be willing to work on that. Question from Cscottfree21 (16:21, 20 December 2023)[edit]

Hello David, I have been a professor of music and while I have wider interests, most of the articles I read related to music and musicians. How do I start with an article that I remember needed some editing? --Cscottfree21 (talk) 16:21, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cscottfree21 Within certain limits (some articles are semi-locked or locked from edits by new or newish accounts), anyone can edit any article. Keep in mind that any addition of facts requires verification via published references. For musicians (and any other people articles), what that person puts on their own website or social media or press releases or interviews are not considered independent references. General advice is be bold in your edits, but if reverted (reversed), start a discussion on the Talk page of the article in a goal of reaching consensus. For each edit, include a brief Edit summary in the space provided at the bottom, to describe what you did.
See WP:NMUSIC and WP:BLP for some guidelines. David notMD (talk) 09:44, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, David, for your response. I will check out the suggested guideline links that you provided.

COI Tag revision[edit]

Hi @DavidnotMD, You reversed my removal of the COI tag on the article about Nina Kossman. The COI tag was put there in early May of last year when one of the editors of the article (Hannayana) was still active on it; it was this editor who created an impression of "COI". This editor is not longer active; in fact, Hannayana has not edited this article since then, thus the activity that caused the COI has been stopped. Another point: Bonadea, the editor who put the COI tag, was not one of the frequent editors of the article; his only contribution to the article was the COI tag. (It seems that he is no longer active as an editor on Wikipedia.) Since the COI has been resolved, I would appreciate it if you reinstate my removal of the COI tag. Happy New Year! Henrylukas12 (talk) 02:39, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Henrylukas12 To my understanding, a COI tag is appropriate if an editor with a known personal connection to the subject of the article has made a significant series of edits to the article. Just because that person has ceased to edit does not mean the COI is no longer valid. If over time, other edits have modified, added, subtracted content, so that the impact has been diluted, only then is removing a COI appropriate. In this instance, User:Hannayana made scores of edits to the NK article between February 2022 and April 2023 and there have been only minor changes since then. Question from JDS1949 (15:07, 28 January 2024)[edit]

I'm Jeff, and have spent an hour trying to suggest an edit. (A simple error, not controversial.) It should not take an hour and end in frustration/failure, but I give up. The Patrick Stewart page states his home town as "Jarrow". I just finished his autobiography, which makes no mention of that South Tyneside town. He lived nowhere but 17 Camm Lane, Mirfield (a few weeks at Sykes Avenue, Mirfield).

I won't bother to try again unless the Foundation welcomes it simply. Thanks. --JDS1949 (talk) 15:07, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the Teahouse help on Maharajas' Express[edit]

Hello @David notMD, thanks for your help on Maharajas' Express. The teahouse discussion is archived and I noticed that you already addressed the issue. I couldn't write there, so just a quick message to thank you for helping out.

Apart from the content you trimmed, I removed one extra line - An on-board boutique offers souvenirs.

I felt this was not required. I thought about adding a 'citation needed' at the end, but felt its better to remove this line since it appeared promotional and not too relevant for mention. I couldn't find any WP:RS citation for it either. If you feel that should be on the page, please let me know and I will add it back.

Review of the Page[edit]

Hi @David notMD,

I just made few edits in this page adding few links and sources. I have not submitted it for review yet. Can you please review the page "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:T_S_Nandakumar". it would be much appreciated. Thanks in Advance for your help.

Thank You! Ashvik08122023 (talk) 05:44, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ashvik08122023 First, I am not a Reviewer of drafts, just a Teahouse Host who advises. However, in looking at Draft:T S Nandakumar my thinking is that it needs revision. Naming a long list of people he has played with does not contribute to his notability (notability is not contagious). The many awards are considered too minor by Wikipedia to contribute to notability, although there is still a benefin in including perhaps the most important 4-5. Perhaps the best you can do is submit again and see what the next reviewer writes. If that person declines it, you can ask for a bit more guidance on that person's Talk page. Question from Joao.frias84 (21:11, 14 February 2024)[edit]

Dear mentor,

I am new to Wikipedia, and am in the process of writing a bio text for a user. Because my account is new, I have been doing small edits in pages that are part of my field of expertise. I believe that I would be able to create a page with valid information and relevant information, if my user has at least 10 verified edits. Would you be able to provide me with some tips on how to write a biography page (including a rectangular section with photos and bio information in the right hand side)?

Also, given that you are more experienced than me, would you be so kind as to let me know whether it is possible to start writing and save a draft page without publishing it? Or would you advise me to just write the page in one go?

Looking forward to your reply.

Best regards --Joao.frias84 (talk) 21:11, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Michael Eamon Herbst (09:05, 24 February 2024)[edit]

Hello, how do I add a second article on Wikipedia? The Sandbox leads me to the 1st article. How do I create another one that is based on another subject? --Michael Eamon Herbst (talk) 09:05, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Michael Eamon Herbst You can create either a second Sandbox (Sandbox2) or create a draft with the draft prefix (preferred). See Wikipedia:Drafts to start process. Be aware that "Publish changes" saves the draft as a draft. As with what is in your current Sandbox, when you think you are done, submiting the draft puts it in a backlog of drafts waiting for a reviewer, as part of the Articles for Creation (AfC) process. The backlog - now approaching 2,000 - is not a queue, so a submitted draft may be reviewed in days, weeks, or (sadly) months. You can continue to work on it while waiting for the reviewer. Drafts can be accepted, declined, rejected (as in not good enough to try improving it) and Speedy deleted. Reviewers of declined drafts give one or more reasons. Such drafts can be improved and resubmitted. Most often, it will get a different reviewer, who may decline it for a different reason. David notMD (talk) 10:46, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Ukvc (12:05, 7 March 2024)[edit]

How do I contribute to a topic within which I operate and where I feel contributions, sources or facts that may be related to our business are relevant? --Ukvc (talk) 12:05, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ukvc If this is about Draft:Silicon Roundabout Ventures, you were asked on your Talk page if you have a paid or personal connection to the business. Either way, that must be stated on your User page. If no connection, then state that on your own Talk page. See WP:NCORP for advice on how to qualify a business as Wikipedia-notable. Almost all content must be verified by independent references (some simple factual content can be referenced by the company's own website). Unreferenced personal knowledge cannot be added. Same for what the company or its senior management says about itself (website, mission statement, financial dealings, press releases, interviews, etc.). References that confirm that SRV invested in various start-ups contribute nothing toward establishing notability. David notMD (talk) 12:16, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
See also WP:TOOSOON. David notMD (talk) 12:35, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
On Silicon Roundabout Ventures I'm still unclear how to state the connection (as in what formula to actually type in). But beyond that it was in areas (like Deep Tech) where I operate. 87.75.37.54 (talk) 13:29, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ukvc First, remember to log in, or else your communications show up as an IP number. The question is what is your connection to Silicon? Employee? Consultant? Those are paid (see WP:PAID). Personal, as in you want to create the article because you know employees? That counts as conflict of interest (see WP:COI) Either way, state your connection on your User page before doing any more editing. To use the paid format, inside double curly brackets {{ }} put paid|user=Ukvc|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName and the info will show up. David notMD (talk) 18:17, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New article on an Intergovermental Organization[edit]

Hello David!

I'm working at an intergovernmental organization that have 11 member states.

I've brought up to my supervisors that having a factual article of our organization will be helpful in helping people understand what we do.

As such, they have allowed me to do some research.

We aim to be an uncontroversial organization whose goal is to improve trade and investment among our member countries and we conduct activities that aim to contribute to that.

What I would like to ask is: - can I submit an article? - what is the process like, how is it different from submitting articles of private companies? - there are government sources from member states about our organization as well, will that be considered as secondary sources? - can we cite our own publications for stuff like the list of our past Secretaries-general/activities?

Sorry for the long question but I really want to do this as right as possible! Byrnachi (talk) 05:08, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Byrnachi Government and non-gov organizations have to meet similar requirements as commercial companies. See WP:NCORP for establishing notability. Also see WP:42 for standards for refs. Employees can submit draft via the Articles for Creation (AfC) process described at WP:YFA, but first you needs to declare your paid relationship. See WP:PAID]. Content must be referenced. What the org says about itself (website, press releases, etc.) cannot be used as references. I hope this is enough to get you started. David notMD (talk) 10:16, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To use the paid format, on your User page, inside double curly brackets {{ }} put paid|user=Byrnachi|employer=InsertName and the info will show up. David notMD (talk) 10:18, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I'll try my best to keep it as factual as possible!
Just one more question, are there any cases where primary sources can be referenced, like the organization's mandate, member states, or strategies? Or would you cite a secondary source instead? Byrnachi (talk) 15:48, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Byrnachi An organization's website (primary) can be a reference for some simple fact, such as location of headquarters, list of member states, but not mandate or strategies. David notMD (talk) 01:16, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Aliciah3 on List of Munchausen by proxy cases (17:22, 14 April 2024)[edit]

I’m a psychologist, and I have looked over all the medical records for gypsy Rose, Blanchard, and she is not a victim of much House by proxy her mother and herself were both involved in grifting and fraud fraudulent games with nonprofit organizations. There was a case in Missouri against both of them for this. They both knew that gypsy was able to walk and they used the wheelchair as a way of gaining trips and money and any other notable item they could from these nonprofit organizations.

Also, all of gypsies medical reports state that gypsy had a chromosome disorder that required her to be seen by the doctors from a very early age for problems that this chromosome disorder does display. I think we might want to remove her name from the Munchhausen by proxy because legally she never had Munchhausen by proxy. --Aliciah3 (talk) 17:22, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Aliciah3 on List of Munchausen by proxy cases (17:26, 14 April 2024)[edit]

I think that it’s notable to remove gypsy Rose Blanchard from the Munchhausen by proxy victim list as she was not a victim of Munchhausen by proxy she actually had a chromosome disorder which made her mother have to give her certain medical treatment for various ailments from that chromosome disorder.

Also, gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother both knew she could walk and did not require a wheelchair, but they used the wheelchair to get these nonprofit organizations to pay for various trips and cruises and other items along with giving them a house and paying all their bills. Both of them were under investigation for fraud and fraudulent schemes by the state of Missouri, because the state of Missouri had caught onto the grifting that they were doing, and the fraud they were committing with all of these various nonprofits . I think it’s notable to remove her from the Munchhausen by proxy victim list because she is not a victim of Munchhausen by proxy. She was a performer in her mother fraudulent schemes that she went along with if you watch the trailers for the lifetime series, her cousin even says that she used to push her cousins around in the wheelchair. Everybody knew that gypsy everybody knew she used a wheelchair but didn’t exactly know why because they did not know about the fraud that her mother and herself were committing. --Aliciah3 (talk) 17:26, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
