Most of the tools have been ported to run on Wikimedia Labs, which is the replacement infrastructure for this type of activity. Wiki Loves Monuments
This month sees the UK participating in the Wiki Loves Monuments competition for the second time. The aim is to capture images of monuments (mainly Grade I and Grade II* listed buildings) and to upload them to Commons. Many monuments have no images available for them or need better ones without clutter in view. The lists of the monuments were produced on a county basis last year. A full list of the English lists for use in the competition are available at listed buildings in England. If you are interested in taking part then take a look at the UK home page for further details. You do not have to take images in Yorkshire but it would be helpful if those in the area would help out to try and get at least one image for every monument in our area. May be the annual Heritage Open Days will provide opportunities for photos of places not usually open to the public.

WikiProject Yorkshire Newsletter - March 2015[edit]
Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 11,759 last month to 11,786 on February 26th). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 113 is ahead of WP:GM who have 84. WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 57 out of a total number of 3,470 articles.
Currently we have thirty three Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon
There is an edit-a-thon on the subject of Art+Feminism to be held at the Hepworth Wakefield on Sunday 8 March 2015. Any members who fit the criteria "Women and allies of all genders, including non-binary gender identities" in the Wakefield area who can get to the event would be welcome to participate. Leeds Meet-up

Elections
With the general election and local elections taking place on 7 May there will be a large number of articles that will need to be updated with the election results when they are declared. Also there will be new articles needed for the election results and for newly elected MPs who we have no articles for. Would be good if these new articles could be tagged with the project banner if they are relevant to the area so that they can be tracked. Please keep an eye on the articles of any candidates so that they remain neutral and are not vandalised, as they will be popular pages at the moment.

Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 12,628 last month to 12,769 on 29 June). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 127 is ahead of WP:GM who have 85. WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 62 out of a total number of 3,620 articles.
Currently we have forty Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.

Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 12,769 last month to 12,795 on 30 July). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 127 is ahead of WP:GM who have 85. WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 62 out of a total number of 3,633 articles.
Currently we have forty Yorkshire featured articles:
As of 29 June 2016, we have assessed 100% of all articles with a project banner.
(Some new and additional article talk pages may still require a banner however)

Celebrations
Celebrations are in order this month as we reach a milestone in the project with 100 editions of the newsletter. It was way back in May 2008 when we introduced the monthly newsletter to project members and I hope that it is still useful to keep members informed of things that are going on in the project. Sometimes you wonder if there is any activity going on and what is happening to the articles in the scope of the project but slowly things are progressing. In May 2008 we only had 3,343 articles to look after, but today that is 12,795. Membership was 45 but is now 82, even though we had a cull of members who were no longer active during that period. Of our identified 15 top-level importance articles, 1 has been promoted to FA-class, 3 have been promoted to GA-class, 1 to B-class, 1 to C-class, while 1 has been demoted to GA-class and another to C-class, note that C-class did not exist in May 2008. We now have 40 FA-class articles and 16 FL-class lists compared to 9 FA-class articles and 7 FL-class lists in May 2008.
Congratulations to all who have helped along the way and be inspired to move things forward over the coming months.

See how template parameters are used
The following was reported in Signpost and is very useful for finding mistakes in template usage.
The Template Parameters tool is now available on Tool Labs, for viewing template parameter usage. It works with TemplateData to show the validity of parameter names that are used in template transclusions. For a required parameter, it can display a list of pages where the template is missing the parameter. The tool also shows commonly used values for each parameter. The data is updated monthly.

It would be good that each time you look at an article on a place in Yorkshire that you also check if it is in the list article. Snap general election
In addition to the usual local elections,
with the calling of a snap general election there will be a lot of changes required to articles over the coming couple of months to update the candidates and results for these in articles. There may be a set of new articles required for new MPs elected this time.
We also need to keep an eye out for any bias in articles about those standing for the election and to keep strict ballot paper order for the election results tables in the constituency articles before the results are know. We all have our views on this but we must remain as neutral as possible.

Snap general election
With the calling of a snap general election there will be a lot of changes required to articles over the coming month to update the candidates and results for these in articles. There may be a set of new articles required for new MPs elected this time.

Census statistics
References to the Office for National Statistics census data used in a large number of articles are all now dead. The University of Durham have produced a replacement website, Nomis, that gives access to the 2011 census data. Template {{NOMIS2011}} has been created to enable this to be used in articles rather than use the URL directly as this could change and allow it to be modified centrally. There is no direct correlation between the old and new URLs so a BOT cannot be used to switch from one to the other. See the template documentation for further details of usage. It would be good if members could change articles over to use the new method of access for the 2011 census and check that the data is correct at the same time.

Welcome to the one hundredth and twenty seventh WikiProject Yorkshire monthly newsletter.
Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 14,388 last month to 14,424 on 30 October 2018). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 148 is ahead of WP:GM who have 86. WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 67 out of a total number of 4,130 articles.
Currently we have forty six Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.

Happy Christmas
It is that time of year again so to wish all members a Happy Christmas. Just to remind members that there will be fewer of the regular members around over the festive period and that there are usually loads of new editors around using their new shiny devices to access the internet and try out some editing. Recent changes
As some of you will know the script for generating the list of project articles for use with the Recent Changes utility stopped working a couple of years ago so the list was way out of date. The good news is that I have managed to find a convoluted way of creating a new list using AutoWikiBrowser. The link for using the new list is Watchlist of recent edits. If you are not interested in talk pages then use Watchlist of recent article edits or for talk pages only Watchlist of recent talk page edits.

The Images of England web site is to be decommissioned this month by Historic England. The text of the site entries has been available on the corresponding National Heritage List entry since that web site was created. The images are being transferred ahead of the decommissioning. As a result of this a BOT has changed all {{IoE}} templates to {{NHLE}} templates and translated the reference number according to a list provided by Historic England.
It would be good if members could check these, when they come across them, as I have spotted one with an incorrect translation. Some articles already had {{NHLE}} templates in them so the references may need to be combined. Other changes that may need to be performed are removal of template or text referring to the site as needing registration, changing the text "Images of England" or "IoE" to something more appropriate or may be even removing it if it is part of the description..

Wiki Loves Monuments
September is the time for the annual Wiki Loves Monuments competition to get quality photographs of listed buildings and scheduled monuments in the UK. It would be good if any members in the Yorkshire area got out and about taking images of any monuments or listed buildings that they find. There are still several entries on the various list articles without images and it would be best to prioritise these if you are in the right place. Details for this years competition can be found here. There are cash prises of up to £250 for the best images that are submitted.
If you are not in Yorkshire then you are still able to join in as the competition covers the whole of the UK, separate competitions are available for other areas of the world if you are not UK based.

General Election
With the calling of a General Election will members keep an eye on the various Parliament constituency articles. Please check that the candidates are appropriately referenced and that they appear in alphabetical order by surname so that we do not show any bias to a particular party. It is also worth checking the settlement articles to see if they have the correct constituency shown.
There will also be all of the candidate articles to check to see if they have the appropriate term end details and text to show if they are standing or not at the election.

WikiProject Yorkshire Newsletter - December 2019[edit]
Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 15,112 last month to 15,231 on 29 November 2019). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 156 is ahead of WP:GM who have 87. WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 68 out of a total number of 4,444 articles.
Currently we have fifty one Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
General Election
With the General Election continuing will members keep an eye on the various Parliament constituency articles. Please check that the candidates are appropriately referenced and that they appear in alphabetical order by surname so that we do not show any bias to a particular party. Once results are in then these will need updating in the constituency articles and the elected MPs reflected in the settlement articles.

Brexit
Well by the time you read this Brexit will have happened and this is the tidy-up that needs doing this month. You can leave the constituency link in articles that use {{infobox UK place}} as the template will hide the field in the output. Those using other templates will need to be edited individually to remove/hide the information. There are also a number of articles that mention the fact in the text of the article and these will need editing to remove the information or show that it was only valid until 31 January 2020.

Destubathon
The Great Britain and Ireland Destubathon is running in March, sign up if you can help, there's nearly $500 worth of book prizes available so if anybody needs books for other topics this might help you out! The project has 5,550 articles currently tagged as sub-class, members could join in the drive and help reduce this number by expanding them up to at least start-class. We are not looking to merge articles but to expand them. In the process you may be in for a prize.

Destubathon
The Great Britain and Ireland Destubathon has been running throughout March and a thank you to all members that participated in the effort to reduce the number of stub articles in the project. There were 32 Yorkshire articles de-stubbed by the effort. Though the number for the project has increased, this is due to tagging of more articles, with 174 new articles tagged this month.

Happy Christmas
It is time to wish all members of the project a Happy Christmas. Though it will be a very different one this year because of the restrictions placed on us by the government because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Though there will be some relaxation of the rules for a 5-day period over the Christmas period it will not allow much of the usual festivities to take place. Hopefully the vaccination will be available early next year for the country to get back to some sort of normality.

WikiProject Yorkshire Newsletter - January 2021[edit]
Welcome to the one hundred and fifty third WikiProject Yorkshire monthly newsletter.
Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 16,386 last month to 16,434 on 29 December 2020). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 190 is ahead of WP:GM who have 88. WP:YORKS also has the lead in FAs at 77 while WP:GM has 69 out of a total number of 4,606 articles.
Currently we have sixty Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
Happy New Year
It is time to wish all members of the project a Happy New Year. Hopefully with the availability of a couple of vaccines things should start to get back to normality soon. The last year has seen 35 of the project's articles promoted to GA, while 9 have been promoted to FA and a list has been promoted to FL. Many thanks to all those members who have been put in the hard work to get these articles to a higher status.

Olympic and Paralympic Games
Happy Yorkshire Day, this month with the Olympic Games in progress it would be good to take a look at some of the articles related to Yokshire competitors. I have gone through and tagged those competitors that have articles and are born in Yorkshire, though there are a significant number that do not include details of where they are from. If you know ones that should be tagged then please take this opportunity to tag them and add relevant categories to their articles. Many are just a couple of line stubs and could do with improving to give some background to these athletes. Many are in need of photographs and there may be some free ones available to help illustrate articles.
Later in the month there will also be the start of the Paralympic Games. Another set of articles that will get a high number of hits as people search for details of the competitors and could do with work to get them in to shape.
Hopefully we will have more Yorkshire medals from both games to celebrate.

Paralympic Games
This month with the Paralympics Games in progress it would be good to take a look at some of the articles related to Yokshire competitors. Wiki Loves Monuments
September is the time for the annual Wiki Loves Monuments competition to get quality photographs of listed buildings and scheduled monuments in the UK. It would be good if any members in the Yorkshire area got out and about taking images of any monuments or listed buildings that they find. There are still several entries on the various list articles without images and it would be best to prioritise these if you are in the right place. Details for this years competition can be found here. There are cash prises of up to £250 for the best images that are submitted.
If you are not in Yorkshire then you are still able to join in as the competition covers the whole of the UK, separate competitions are available for other areas of the world if you are not UK based.

Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 18,564 last month to 18,601 on 27 February 2023). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 211 is ahead of WP:GM who have 92. WP:YORKS also has the lead in FAs at 91 while WP:GM has 66 out of a total number of 4,848 articles.
Currently we have seventy four Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
North Yorkshire
A note that there will be a major change coming up for North Yorkshire with the reorganisation of the local government of the area. This will see the abolition of the districts and North Yorkshire becoming a unitary authority taking on all of the responsibilities of the district councils. This will require a change to most articles relating to the area. If you have any thoughts on what needs doing then make them known at the project talk page.

A Happy Christmas to all members of the project and thanks for all the work you have put in supporting articles relating to Yorkshire. The year saw much change, especially to the governance of North Yorkshire which became a unitary authority in April. This affected a large number of articles, but most of this has been done by those who are active. The project is subscribed to a clean-up listing which lists articles tagged with various clean-up tags that need attention. The listing is refreshed by a bot on a regular basis.
Monitoring is essential Use the watchlist to keep an eye on changes to the project's articles so that vandalism and spamming can be removed as quickly as possible.
Moves Please be careful when performing articles moves and ensure that you also move all the talk sub-pages and update any image fair use rational. Otherwise the archives, to-do lists, assessment comments and GA reviews get lost and the image may be deleted as it has an incorrect FUR. You will also have to check that the Commons link is set correctly.

Welcome to the one hundred and ninty third WikiProject Yorkshire monthly newsletter.
Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 19,275 last month to 19,335 on 28 April 2024). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 220 is ahead of WP:GM who have 90. WP:YORKS also has the lead in FAs at 93 while WP:GM has 65 out of a total number of 5,054 articles.
Currently we have seventy six Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
Elections
This is the month for local elections, Mayoral elections and Police and Crime Commissioner elections. There will be a large number of results articles that need creating or updating. There will also be updates to most of the location articles, with changes to the governess sections and infoboxes. Not to mention the people articles for those standing for election.
