WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  • Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
  • England Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.

Grand'mere Eugene, I hadn't noticed that not-acted-on request there. I've seen other AfDs with one voter be soft deleted before, but perhaps this one wasn't because JPL's comment about weak sourcing seems to be on the nose. MBisanz, do you have any thoughts on this? Jana Lynne Sanchez article

I'm going to read the IP comments and investigation about an alleged paid editing. When I went to update the articles about Ellzey I read over a dozen articles on Sanchez. I don't know how much the editor(s?) in question contributed, but if such edits were accurate, shouldn't it/they remain? Activist (talk) 22:38, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

The editing history of Sanchez is very odd. She was editing under her own name, 29 times over seven weeks from March through May 2019, then quit editing for 19 months. There was no subterfuge, and I suspect she had no idea that was a violation of Wikipedia policies. Thirty days after opening a User account, she created a page for her associate, James Kinsella. She restarted editing on December 30, 2020, four to three articles possibly unrelated to her, then 10 more to her own article. She then made 11 edits in January through March 2021, including seven to her own article. The many edits I read were fairly matter of fact, objective, so no real harm done, IMHO. She's banned from future editing, so nothing needs to be done about that. I think all the edits in question were technically COI, but not at all if any were deceptive. I think both the Kinsella article (he is very clearly notable) and the one about her should stay. I don't think there's any evidence of paid editing, just a presumption of it. Charles Bender Nickname

I disagree that the graf about Charles Bender's nickname makes it clear that it was a racist nickname.

Bender was nicknamed "Chief", a common nickname for baseball players of Native American descent.(Swift, p. 4) Biographer Tom Swift writes that Bender "was often portrayed as a caricature and was the subject of myriad cartoons – many exhibits of narrow-mindedness. After he threw one of the most dominating games of the early years of the American League, Bender was depicted wielding a tomahawk and wearing a headdress as though he was a happy warrior."(Swift, p. 5)

All it says is that it was a common nickname and that he was the target of individualized racism, not that the nick itself is racist. @Triplingual: we can add more context to demonstrate its racism, but we can't use the word "racist". I was going to point out WP:WTW and the specific redirect to it MOS:RACIST. Those two paragraphs from Swift show it better than the label itself can. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:03, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
That's a pretty huge issue. Even the AP allows the direct use of "racist" without needing to get into individual motivations. (https://www.poynter.org/reporting-editing/2019/ap-stylebook-update-its-ok-to-call-something-racist-when-its-racist/) I'm just a casual Wikipedia editor, but even I can see this is an issue where Wikipedia cannot be neutral. I'm also sure I'm not the first to bring that up. What if multiple reliable sources say the nick is racist? Triplingual (talk) 17:41, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Triplingual, I'm not going to agree with you about using a WTW on the page. We are not the AP and we do not sue their stylebook. We do things differently than they do. The "nutshell" of WTW says to "Let facts alone do the talking" and I agree with that. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:04, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

With regards to Talk:Elliot Page

I was searching and couldn't find what I was looking for but maybe your expertise will help. No one seems to be seeing the FAQ at the page top and in the middle of that to boot. Is there any template that can be used (even an administrative only template) that will always appear at the talk page bottom? Something that has a parameter of bottom=yes? Since new readers place their new queries at the bottom of the page for picture and dead name removal, maybe that's where an additional giant warning could be placed so they can't miss it. I just tried it on my own talk page. That can work. Anything that at least hits a poster with an extra message to read the FAQ, Wording like: "Attention---Before editing, please consult the list of Frequently Asked Questions specific to this article. Julian Assange

In removing material from the Julian Assange article, you wrote, if discussion is ongoing, that means there's no consensus to include it yet. The material in question has been in the article for more than a year, as I explained on the talk page. Consensus is required to remove the material, not the other way around. There is indeed ongoing discussion (because those arguing in favor of removal have repeatedly raised and re-raised the issue, despite never getting consensus for removal), but there is no consensus for removal. -Thucydides411 (talk) 15:05, 8 May 2021 (UTC)

Julian Assange

You recently removed some long standing content from the Julian Assange page. The policy on consensus seems fairly clear.

Any edit that is not disputed or reverted by another editor can be assumed to have consensus. Should that edit later be revised by another editor without dispute, it can be assumed that a new consensus has been reached. In this way, the encyclopedia is gradually added to and improved over time. Discussions sometimes result in no consensus to take or not take an action. What happens next depends on the context:

  • In deletion discussions, a lack of consensus normally results in the article, page, image, or other content being kept.
  • In discussions of proposals to add, modify, or remove material in articles, a lack of consensus commonly results in retaining the version of the article as it was prior to the proposal or bold edit.

Angel Hernandez

Hey there, long time no see. I've been trying to avoid drama lately, but there's ongoing IP disruption at Ángel Hernández (umpire) that I think rises to the level of page protection. As you can see from the page log, this article has been semi-protected many times over, but the disruption always resumes once the protection ends. I'm of the opinion that indefinite semi-protection is probably our best hope for ending the drama, given that Hernandez has become a magnet for IPs with an axe to grind. At any rate, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could take a look and do whatever you think is best. Hope you're doing well and congrats on Stanton's walk-off winner. Lepricavark, Semi-protected for a period of 1 month, after which the page will be automatically unprotected.
What's interesting is that when the page is unprotected, it's usually calm for a while. I had protected the article last back in March, and it was without trouble for all of April. If it's hit again when it's unprotected in June, we can make it longer.

Tim Tebow Update

Hello Muboshgu. I saw your note about removing my update on the Tim Tebow page regarding his signing with the Jaguars. The source that I cited did indeed state that the sports transaction is taking place, and is no longer a rumor. I can understand if that looked confusing since I stated that it began as a rumor at the start of my update, but that was just to present the whole of the story. The signing is no longer a rumor and as of 7 hours ago has been completed and reported. This is reflected in my source, which is a "reliable source" as per Wikipedia's standards. Hinckleycoldstorage, this does not confirm that the transaction has taken place. A reporter says that he has "confirmed" that it will happen. But what does that mean? These deals fall through all the time. Until his ink is on a contract, and his name is added to Jacksonville's roster, then the rumored deal could still not happen. We are an encyclopedia. We are not a newspaper. We don't report "rumors" or "speculation". And yes, this is still a rumor until it happens, if it happens. – Muboshgu (talk) 22:33, 11 May 2021 (UTC)
Muboshgu, totally see where you're coming from, but following thru on the sources for the article shows that the transaction is no longer a "rumor", and is in motion. That said, I understand your point about waiting til the ink is signed as a general, "print the fact, after it's taken place", versus, "print the fact, AS it's taking place" scenario, so I'll go back revert my last update. It's always tricky with sports, which are fluid, and especially with all of the clickbait journalism and what not, so better to be on the safer side. Appreciate the you giving clarity here. Re: James Kaprielian Edit

Hi Muboshgu,

You left me a message but I can't figure out how to respond so I'm leaving this new message.

You rejected my edit saying "James Kaprielian is American, not Armenian." He is, in fact, of Armenian descent/ethnicity, and of American nationality. Armenians living in the United States are called "Armenian-American", exactly like "Asian-American" or "African-American". There are over a million people who fall under this umbrella, and James is a loud and proud Armenian. The Armenian people come from a disadvantaged background and have historically had to fight just to be seen, for their history not to be covered up, and for the facts of their existence to be noticed. User3888, I also pointed you to MOS:ETHNICITY. Ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead unless it is relevant to the subject's notability. Similarly, previous nationalities or the place of birth should not be mentioned in the lead unless relevant to the subject's notability. Following up on your comment at WP:ERRORS, the press probably lifted it from this previous version of List of New York Yankees no-hitters, since corrected. It was already at Morgridge's bio before you expanded it. It seems to have slipped through the checkpoints and made it to the MP. Bagumba, that's probably what happened, and it's unfortunate. Even though it was in Mogridge's article before I expanded it, and numerous "reliable sources" quoted it, I could've not taken that as gospel and checked. List of Boston Red Sox no-hitters would have told me that Rube Foster threw a no-hitter at Fenway in 1916. But it incorrectly states "First no-hitter at Fenway Park" as well. My mistake

My mistake. I'm new to editing Wikipedia and did not realize that I was violating a rule when repeatedly reposting the Apportionment edit. Additionally, I did not realize Daily Kos was considered an unreliable source.

I generally agree that Daily Kos should be considered a concerning or unreliable source. In the article I'm mentioning, though, the proportion results are created using Census data and simple math. Additionally, I think the information is relevant to understanding the makeup of the Senate. There are similar edits to many of the US House of Representatives Wiki pages. I'll start a discussion on the 2020 election page about that.

WP:REFUND

Hello, Muboshgu,

I wanted to ask you a question. In this post, I told editor Mrjohnaytedvx that he could overcome an AFD deletion decision about Gehad Hamdy by writing a draft and submitting it to AFC for approval. So, that's what he did. But it was deleted as the recreation of an article deleted in an AFD decision even though it was in Draft space. So, they have come to REFUND to ask for the restoration of the draft.

At first, I declined because of the AFD decision and then I realized that they had taken my advice to work on an article in Draft space so I removed my denial. I'm not a regular reviewer of restoration requests so I wanted to get your perspective on this request. Liz Read! Talk! 23:53, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

I think the language about drafts in WP:G4 is a little ambiguous. I've sure seen admins deleting drafts tagged CSD G4 before but, as I'm sure you know, admins can differ in how they interpret Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Sports cards

Originally the Beckett price guides were used for sources however the prices were excluded precisely for the reason that Wikipedia is not a catalog and therefore met the requirements. That project was not actually finished. Unfortunately I was unavailable to reply to the proposed deletions when they were posted. Libro0 (talk) 18:48, 12 June 2021 (UTC) Upon further review of the Wikipedia definition of catalog, it is clear the deleted articles do not constitute a catalog for the purchase of items. The articles still require other sections like ‘references in popular culture’. It would be greatly appreciated if the articles could be restored. In future please use the articles discussion page and wait for a response instead of delete since some of us users do not have the opportunity to frequent here as often as others. Thank you. Ok so I’m going to try again here to get some feedback or you can direct me to someone who can be of assistance. Clearly a generation later and ideas have changed. Notability is lost on people now. Expansion is possible on these projects which is why I would like to take them elsewhere. However I do not have them saved anywhere. Any thoughts would be immensely appreciated. Okay, I may be wrong. But, I may also still be correct. Seeing as you have left my post, and, if you simply go ahead and delete articles simply because nobody bothered to object, my question is as follows: (i) Do you simply delete to push up your editing stats and to obtain "badges" and wikipedia "honors"? (ii) Or, do you in fact bother to actually do any research and maybe add to the article, to improve Wikipedia?

I have not yet spent the time to actually look at any of your lots and lots of contributions, but, if you are an honourable, ethical and actual one human person, do consider that you are actually editing "low hanging fruit" to push up your stats.

Suryabeej, the article will not be undeleted at WP:RFUD since it was deleted via discussion. I do not recommend DRV as this does not meet the criteria of WP:DRVPURPOSE. WikiCup 2021 July newsletter

The third round of the 2021 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 294 points, and our top six scorers all had over 600 points. They were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 1825 points from 3 featured articles, 44 featured article reviews, 14 good articles, 30 good article reviews and 10 DYKs. In addition, he completed a 34-article good topic on the EFL Championship play-offs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a New York specialist, with 1083 points from 2 featured article reviews, 18 good articles, 30 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 869 points from 11 DYKs, all with bonus points, and 54 "In the news" items, mostly covering people who had recently died.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 817 points from 3 featured articles on historic battles in Europe, 5 featured article reviews and 3 good articles.
  • Hog Farm, with 659 points from 2 featured articles and 2 good articles on American Civil War battles, 18 featured article reviews, 2 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 4 DYKs.
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, a snooker specialist and new to the Cup, with 647 points from a featured article, 2 featured article reviews, 6 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 3 DYKs.

In round three, contestants achieved 19 featured articles, 7 featured lists, 106 featured article reviews, 72 good articles, 1 good topic, 62 good article reviews, 165 DYKs and 96 ITN items. We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (one contestant in round 3 lost out because of this). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Made more changes. One weird problem with the personal life section - I googled "Mike Fontenot wife" and found several sources mentioning his wife, but none of them qualified as a reliable source.   • I can't speak for Muboshgu, whose life and loves are very different from mine, but looking at your userpage I'd say that if anything really isn't very Wikipedia-ish (see WP:NOTWEBHOST), it's those lists of TV shows and character rankings (?). 5x expansion

Hi Muboshgu, I'm confused about "5x expansion". Can you help me with it? I have been expanding Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind since last few days and the DYKCheck tool says it has not been 5x expanded. Hi @TheAafi: Maybe I can help. 5x expansion means expanding the prose part of an article 5 times the original numbers of characters. For DYK, the nomination is required to be made within 7 days of expansion. The DYK check tool in not showing 5x expansion because it is not expanded 5 times. The version of article 7 days ago (7th July) has 4187 characters and current version has 12845 characters. It is almost 3x expansion, but not 5x. Maybe you can add more information (if any). @TheAafi: 5x expansion has nothing to do with words, but by the number of characters. Yes, you have done 3x expansion, and adding some more content would complete 5x expansion, but also take a note of time (as the nomination has to be made within 7 days). I'm probably not the only one to not know it snuck into OVERLINK in 2016.[1] IMO, guidelines that weren't already a rough general practice, like that one, are a bad idea. Then it being in an infobox, where driveby editors will constantly "fix" and link, doesn't help. I mainly wanted the state to remain (yet another debate to even link or pipe that) when I reverted you, and adding South Jamaica was ironic when the prev editor objected to even Queens. I do dislike seeing "NYC" given as a place of birth or residence, because NYC is huge with five distinct boroughs. Just accept that the compromise works. We've also compromised with the folks over at the Baltic countries. We use "Soviet Union" for birth/death country on hockey article bios, while they continue to use "Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania" on other bio articles, concerning the 1940 to 1991 era. I can dig them up if you really want them (though I'd advise saving those cognitive cells for something else less stultifying), but to summarize: over the years, there has been disagreement on English Wikipedia regarding how to apply the guidance on using commonly recognizable names for persons whose names are spelled with modified Latin letters. Some people think if a source uses a spelling other than that of the original language, it's automatically not reliable with regards to the spelling of that name. (It's been a while since the last big discussion on this, in which the votes were almost split equally on both sides.) There were some ice hockey editors who felt strongly about using the spelling of NHL players as commonly used by North American media, and those who did not. Accordingly, the compromise solution was proposed by GoodDay and used to stop edit warring, in absence of project-wide guidance. These days, there are a lot fewer hockey editors who insist on not using modified letters, and NHL teams are starting to put accents on player sweaters, so it's quite possible that within the next year, the guidance will change. isaacl (talk) 01:48, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, the guidance at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English) § Modified letters also says the use of modified letters is neither encouraged or discouraged. (I think the last big discussion took place on the corresponding talk page. During that time, someone tried to create an English WikiProject to promote the use of English and non-modified letters. It got deleted as a vehicle for canvassing, as I recall.) Though it's possible that the community might no longer be split on the issue, it's just one of those many areas where those who went through the discussions in the past aren't enthused about going through them again. isaacl (talk) 03:57, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

This redirects to the Padres minor leagues list. Surprisingly, there seem to be two Brady Feigls in the minors - a pitcher at AA in the Oakland system, and a pitcher on the 60-day IL for the Padres AAA team. Do you think this name is going to be worth disambiguating, or how should this be addressed? He's got a section at the Padres page and is mentioned in a roster table at the A's one. Hog Farm, I was already aware of the Feigl with the Padres org, I did not know there was someone with that name in the Oakland org. And, of course, they're both pitchers. New York isn't a special case

Howdy. We've used Governor-designate before, in these situations. Why is New York being made the exception? If Cuomo changes his mind between now & then? We simply delete. Nohomersryan, I did not notice that, so thanks for bringing it to my attention. Back in the early days of Wikipedia, it appears that there were two articles for Joe Gallo: one there and one at Joey Gallo. They were merged into the Joe Gallo page in 2005 and my move of Joey Gallo deleted those few edits. That talk page edit is related to the gangster.
