Review submission[edit]

Hello, I want to make 3 articles, please review.

Hi. You might remember that last week I added a piece of information to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabrizio_Cerina which is accurate and substantiated by various sources (please indicate whether you would like to see them again). I also edited the page in the hope to make its chronology more organic; but I brought no substantial changes to it. A COI was published short after "A major contributor to this article appears to have a close connection with its subject...". As a professional journalist I would not like to be perceived having conflicts with anyone, which indeed I have not. I'm kindly asking whether after a week of inactivity is there a way to remove such note. I read that "you may simply remove the maintenance template; it will not be removed automatically" but I do not want to be intrusive. Naturally, if you consider that the issue isn't reasonably resolved I will follow further indications. I would appreciate your help. Thank you.David T Cohen (talk) 20:48, 3 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

David T Cohen, okay. I saw it all, and it is unambiguously advertising in nature. I will be direct now - is the person, or someone on his behalf, paying you for writing the article? If yes, read WP:UPE, and clearly note on your user page that you are being paid. JavaHurricane 02:00, 4 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I find your remark offensive and unfair. I'm NOT PAID BY ANYONE TO DO THIS. I HAVE ZERO INTEREST IN THIS EXCEPT MY REPUTATION IN RELATION TO MY JOB. I'm new to Wikipedia and you know that. In fact the news platform I work for (newsgateny.com) wrote in the past weeks about this subject and other 9. I did part of the job and based on what I had learned I thought (stupid me!) a good idea to give my free contribution which is in NO CONFLICT OF INTEREST and which brings ZERO ADVANTAGE to me. Never again! I realize now what kind of mess I put myself in. I would just like to clear the remarks about me. Can you please explain exactly what you don't like and why you move such harsh accusations? Please note that I merely added ONE piece of information (with sources) to an EXISTING PAGE (plus and other minor changes). Please note that this can be damaging my job. I would like to get things straight and get out of this.David T Cohen (talk) 11:17, 4 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

David T Cohen, so does writing a promotional article on someone form a part of your job? I'm sorry if you are feeling offended, but it is clear you are a paid editor. You are writing this article as part of your job, which is classified as paid editing. If my concerns about UPE can damage your job, well, I'm convinced that you are a paid editor. Please reply on COIN. JavaHurricane 12:30, 4 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I did NOT write a promotional article. You are seriously getting it wrong. And I'm really sorry about it as I'm sure you are in good faith. I AM NOT PAID to do this. I do not even know the subject and frankly I don't care. My employer, days ago, published a piece about a bank the subject chairs. I would like to stress that it was NOT a promotional piece. Completely documented and taken from major newspapers like the Financial Time. And IT WAS NOT ME who wrote such piece. I learned news which wasn't on Wiki and believing to do good, I added it to the page. ONE piece of info, that's it. You are talking to me like I wrote the entire page. THE ARTICLE WAS THERE ALREADY. I just added ONE paragraph (with sources). Anyhow, all I care now is to clear MY name and not to damage anyone. I'm going to search for objective sources and trying my best. What is COIN? (Conflict?)David T Cohen (talk) 14:58, 4 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

David T Cohen, Conflict of interest noticeboard. Also, the information you added was clearly unsourced and promotional, and has been removed by another user for violating policy. JavaHurricane 15:01, 4 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OK. The news was about a new hotel in Milan, Italy. I just re-read what I had added. The tone was not encyclopedic, I agree. Sorry. But it was indeed well sourced: https://milano.repubblica.it/cronaca/2020/01/06/news/cipriani_ristoranti_milano_palazzo_bernasconi-245072068/ and https://forbes.it/2020/01/07/il-gruppo-cipriani-sbarca-a-milano-a-palazzo-bernasconi/ and http://creditdesalpes.com/index.php/cipriani-milan/ What am I supposed to do now? I'd like to defend my position. I imagine it is my rightDavid T Cohen (talk) 16:52, 4 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I just wrote to Cabayi and I'm adding you. I wouldn't know where else to publish this. Please consider carefully my words. This is a very unfair story. I'VE ZERO CONFLICT! NOBODY PAID ME!! I did not and I do not know the subjects personally. But the platform I was freelancing with took your accusations seriously and CANCELED my contract! Do you understand what that means? And you are still joking about that? It is shameful to accuse people just like this. I wanted to hear about Wikipedia never again. But today I was informed that my position has dramatically worsened. The platform is claiming that some editorinvolved also them in this matter. Is it true? Why??? They are saying I caused this and are coming after ME for damages. What did you do exactly? What do they have to do with this? I need to urgently know as I might soon find myself in Court and the lawyer needs to be prepared. This could be a tragedy for me and my family. I've been accused of all kind of wrongdoings because of a stupid edit I thought was of interest as the people involved are well known. Please answer about the platform as per above. I need to prepare myselfDavid T Cohen (talk) 21:30, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Resubmitted[edit]

Hello, you have changed the article you declined.

I have changed the Draft:Bhamatsar article, please review the article.

As you suggested to translate Draft:Sumit Godara article into English, you can translate it. So let me tell you that I am new on Wikipedia, I have not yet been given the facility to translate the page into English. And you said biography and career are lacking. So let me tell you, I added as much information as I had. If anyone has more information, it will add more. I also placed the stub in the External Links section. If you ask any page reviewer, then this page will tell you correctly. I am not telling you wrong by saying this. You have a good knowledge of Wikipedia. Only then you are a good page reviewer. I don't mean to say that, this article should be on Wikipedia. I feel sorry for anything you said to me. Please approve. Thank you

I have removed the section "About" "Caste" "Education" in the article in Draft:Bhamatsar. Please review Mr Tejal (talk) 06:44, 4 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That NewsgateNY editor[edit]

Hello! I wanted to leave you a note to explain my thinking on that one. COIN and the wiki is overrun with COI/paid editors. Lately I have tried to focus on what good can be wrought from their work. In the case of the $46 million dollar banker article, the subject seems notable so I cleaned it up. The editor seemed to make a good faith declaration that they were just "doing it on their coffee break". In the absence of other evidence, I am willing to take that at face value. In the end it is enormously time-consuming to chase down these paid/COI editors. If we can get rid of them easily, I will be the first to file an SPI/ANI or whatever report is required. But in this case it looked like too much work to be worth it. Finally, I'm not sure if their "lost my job" statement is real, but if it is it means COI is no longer an issue. Thanks.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 01:46, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ThatMontrealIP, you're welcome! JavaHurricane 05:27, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Tropical Storm Diane (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is a redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Review[edit]

Hi, I edited the article Harsh Beniwal. As far as I think I have rightly edited it. And then put the submission. But after some time, a reviewer declines. Please see the article Draft:Harsh Beniwal once and tell me what was wrong with the article. Please describe. I am waiting for your reply. Help me create an article Draft:Harsh Beniwal. Mr Tejal (talk) 09:02, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mr Tejal, likely a notability problem. See WP:NBIO for more information. JavaHurricane 09:34, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

help[edit]

I do not have much knowledge of English language, so I probably make mistakes in writing articles. I request you to edit the article Draft:Harsh Beniwal. Please edit. I hope so from you. Mr Tejal (talk) 10:09, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mr Tejal, I think I will. I'm busy right now, but once I'm free I'll do some work on it. Also, don't start a new header everytime you reply. You can reply under the previous header itself. JavaHurricane 10:13, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mr Tejal, no problems! JavaHurricane 11:11, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mr Tejal, sorry, someone has deleted the article. Nothing much I can do now. JavaHurricane 09:17, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

So I make the article back and you edit it. Mr Tejal (talk) 09:29, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mr Tejal, please don't. You can get blocked for persistently promoting people. JavaHurricane 09:30, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

So what should i do? Mr Tejal (talk) 09:34, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

And I did not make this, I just edited. Mr Tejal (talk) 09:38, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mr Tejal, you'll have to contact the deleting admin. In my opinion, it is better if you rewrite the draft in a better way in your sandbox. JavaHurricane 10:50, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I asked you for help in creating this article. But you are back telling me to prepare it in the sandbox. Mr Tejal (talk) 10:58, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It is good if this article helps. But I have prepared and wrote Draft:Amit Bhadana (youtuber). Please review and help improve rather than decline. Thank you Mr Tejal (talk) 11:02, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mr Tejal, sure. I think you can add sources from news channels other than Republic, and add a biography for starters. As for that deleted article, I personally think it is better if you don't restart it as a large number of sockpuppets and undisclosed paid editors are involved in the promotion of the politician. Recreating it could lead to blocks. JavaHurricane 11:08, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I request you to edit it. Please please please Mr Tejal (talk) 11:11, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mr Tejal, I will. Don't worry. JavaHurricane 11:15, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Please do it now, otherwise any other page reviewer will decline the article. Mr Tejal (talk) 11:22, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ferulic acid decarboxylase (Fdc)[edit]

I accepted the article. Even in the version that you saw, the context was clear enough to anyone who would be likely to be interested in the article. There are many fields I do not understand--probably including the fields for at least 3/4 of the articles submitted to WP--and I try not to review articles in them DGG ( talk ) 00:20, 15 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

DGG, okay, thanks! My main concern was that the article's subject seemed ambiguous, but that might just be because of the usage of some really fancy terms. Thank you! JavaHurricane 02:08, 15 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

For what it is worth, the edit was sourced to a cricket fan club's website and a sports shop (the latter seemed more like a spam link). Given the nature of the edit and the overall behaviour of the editor, the edit seemed to be bad-faith to me, which is why I issued a vandalism warning. Question from BobbyWillemsen on Draft:Neebs Gaming (18:35, 9 January 2022)[edit]

Hey Java, My name is Bobby. I’m attempting to create a page/topic about my favorite gaming team. They have over 1,000,000 followers on YouTube and I think many people would contribute to said page. I’m having issues creating a clean and accurate layout any help would be much appreciated. --BobbyWillemsen (talk) 18:35, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

(by talk reader) @BobbyWillemsen: Please read Wikipedia:WikiProject YouTube/Notability. YouTubers aren't notable here simply because they have views or a following. We only care about significant coverage in independent sources, which you're not apt to find. Any questions about "clean and accurate layout" miss the point. Where are your sources and what do they say? Write in your own words what they convey and that will drive your text. You might maybe write two or three sentences to the effect of "NeebsGaming is a channel on YouTube that posts content about various video games." You would do better to expand the subject to that group of guys, including the podcast, Doraleus and Associates, and their other projects but even then I don't see you making a claim of notability. Instead of trying to write a new article, just go improve articles about a topic you know. In five years you might have gained enough experience and sources to write about Neebs. If you're not prepared to grind away doing maintenance tasks for five years, then just quit Wikipedia now and blog about your ideas somewhere else, instead. Hello, JavaHurricane. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Vombatkere v. Union of India".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been deleted. If you plan on working on it further and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Liz Read! Talk! 16:14, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, JavaHurricane,
I looked and found you did receive a notice about this draft last month than is now found in your talk page archive 2. I think your talk page archives are really mixed up, like you manually archived some pages and then gave the duty to a bot who has a different understanding of where discussions should go because your archives aren't organized chronologically any more. Liz Read! Talk! 16:19, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Java Hurricane for helping others. You are amazing.

Electreon Wireless - Draft page[edit]

This article was re-submitted after a lengthy discussion with other editors that established notability of the piece and its sources. Please see here for complete details of this conversation. I don't want to have to loop in the other editors into this thread to review what has already been discussed at length regarding the notability of this piece and the conversation around its "promotional" text. I use quotations here because it is inaccurate to state the text is promotional.

Please provide examples of how this article is a promotional piece. I have continuously asked for this feedback from editors, but none are able to provide adequate examples of such. This goes back to my prior comments in the referenced link that editors need to be fair arbiters of fact vs. promotion. There is no promotional language here (i.e. highlighting the company's benefits/advantages over its competitors, promoting the company's business), it is all facts on the company's history, technology, and current projects. You need to be able to apply a fair standard of review, otherwise you are detracting from the value of Wikipedia. Please, provide examples of promotional language in the piece. If you have none, that's fine, but then don't call it a promotional piece for convenience sake because you have no other critiques.

This article needs to be reviewed under fair assessment, but those who can differentiate between promotion and fact. Please, can you provide examples of promotional text in this draft? Even after it was agreed by the other editors that the article should be resubmitted for review, there is no ability to provide further details on promotional/advert. language by *any* editor.

Reviewers/editors need to provide a consistent standard of review across draft articles, otherwise they are detracting from the value of Wikipedia's authenticity. (Jacobariel91 (talk) 07:52, 8 February 2022 (UTC))[reply]

As it happens, I rejected that draft after reading that discussion. Please do not misrepresent the results of that discussion to favour you. As for the draft; it is obviously an advert masquerading as an article. I am not going to help you promote that company on Wikipedia. I could be more blunt, but I will refrain for now. JavaHurricane 08:00, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Jacobariel91 You answered your own question as to why the article is promotional, in your passage above. 331dot (talk) 08:55, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

331dot "(i.e. highlighting the company's benefits/advantages over its competitors, promoting the company's business)" This is NOT what the text has - this is an example of promotional text which the draft text does *NOT* have. I was giving you an example of what would constitute promotional text and that the draft text does NOT have this. Please read more carefully. I will restate in a different, clearer way:

331dot how is this draft text an advertisement of the company's benefits, advantages, highlights over competitors (it's not, because none of this appears in the article)? How is it an advertisement if it states the company has higher costs than its competitors - why would anyone want to advertise that?

JavaHurricane You need to be an unbiased arbiter of fact vs. promotion. If you can't, then you are devaluing from Wikipeida's merits. Please provide examples of how this text is being promotional, when it is just describing facts, challenges, and the history of the company. Please provide examples. (Jacobariel91 (talk) 09:41, 8 February 2022 (UTC))[reply]

I have no interest in wasting my time in interacting, or rather arguing, with you, Jacobariel91. It would be kind if you could not post on my talk page. Thank you. JavaHurricane 10:52, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

WP:AFC Helper News[edit]

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Question from A40585 (21:31, 20 February 2022)[edit]

I'm curious about WP policy on what form article titles have to be. I have seen a few cases where articles have been mangled because editors are blindly sticking to the rule that articles must be a definite thing that you can refer to with "a" or "the" or a person. It's kind of frustrating, because it seems that if the person understood the concept, they would realize that it's nicer to title the article that way. People don't like it when articles titles are gerunds or concepts or mass nouns, even though in cryptography/math that oftentimes makes sense. Do you know which WP guideline enforces this? Do you know where I could go complain about it? --A40585 (talk) 21:31, 20 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@A40585: see MOS:TITLE. This part of the MoS is so controversial that ArbCom had to impose discretionary sanctions in the area. JavaHurricane 04:06, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@JavaHurricane: Thanks so much! I feel validated that I'm not the only person who feels frustrated by blind application of the policy around titles.
While I'm here, I wanted to complain a bit about my experience in the AfC queue. I'm not sure if you can do anything about this. I feel like the jump from doing newcomer edits do trying to submit an article through the AfC queue is a pretty mediocre experience. While doing my newcomer edits, people were pretty nice and just made a few minor corrections to my edits. When I was going through the AfC queue, I got a lot of nitpicky and low quality feedback on my articles. This is a frustrating ramp up in difficulty, and it's also frustrating because it feels like there are way worse articles in mainspace than what I was submitting. In a couple of cases I got feedback that was just straight-up wrong, and I found it kind of frustrating because it feels like people giving AfC feedback should be the most careful to be nice to try to not scare off new editors.
Another question: I have been looking at some of the edits on articles I've been working on, and I see people really split out their edits piecemeal (like one edit per each citation fix or spelling mistake fix or so on). I thought I saw something that said explicitly not to do this, and this seems like trying to increase your edit count by slightly silly means. Is this allowed or looked down upon? Is there a good reason to do this?
A40585 (talk) 16:15, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@A40585:
Re the AfC: the main problem is that Wikipedia is subject to a lot of undisclosed-paid editing rings or scams; not to mention a lot of sock puppets spamming about someone or the other; and these scammers have caused a lot of reviewers to become very wary, resulting in increased saltiness. There's a few good, helpful reviewers, but the majority often appear salty. A similar problem also exists at the new page patrol for the same reasons. You may want to leave a message at WT:AFC detailing your experience.
As for the other: yeah, that's not very accepted, but eh; it's generally not disruptive enough to warrant going after the editor in question and spending precious time on that, considering there's enough of drama around already. There's some situations where action is needed, and the action there is generally pretty quick. JavaHurricane 14:32, 22 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I've just come across this Draft:Namrata Sapkota at AfC, and thought I'd ask what you make of it, given that you rejected it some months ago. I don't see anything there to indicate notability, but I do note that the draft reads quite differently now from the rejected version. I'm thinking of at least declining this, possibly even rejecting again, unless you have other suggestions? Cheers, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 11:15, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@DoubleGrazing: I'd say the subject is pretty non-notable; the sourcing is still not quite up to the mark, and I am not finding anything better. I'd reject it if I were reviewing that draft even now. JavaHurricane 12:56, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, you're probably right, and I was leaning that way also. Meaning we could both be wrong, but hey ho... -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 13:05, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Teyora - Development first look![edit]

Hi! I'm Ed6767, the original creator of RedWarn, now one of the most popular tools on the English Wikipedia that's been used by over 1,000 Wikimedians to make over 300,000 edits since mid-2020 that's been praised for its user friendliness and ease of use, but criticised for its limited functionality. I'm leaving this message as I think it may be of interest here - I left the RedWarn project in November to develop Teyora, my successor to RedWarn (alongside Chlod's UltraViolet). It's a new in development web app that uses some of the latest web technologies to create a highly extendable all in one editing tool with a focus on administration, counter vandalism and general patrolling - not to mention, it'll work on every Wikimedia project without any prior configuration and can be used by any user with at least auto-confirmed rights*. Now, I'm ready to give the Wikimedia community a first look at what I've been doing over the past six months and what to expect going forward.

You can check out the 20 minute first look at the in development version on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzlpnzXdLP4.

There's lots more to expect too! Why not read the full details page at meta:Teyora and leave any feedback, comments or wishes at meta:Talk:Teyora (please leave any correspondence there to keep discussion centralised). If you're interested, you can leave your signature

*with basic features, advanced features require configuration. To prevent abuse, auto-confirmed users will be in a restricted mode until approved by an admin or via rollback rights.

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022[edit]

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello JavaHurricane,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 816 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 858 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022[edit]

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello JavaHurricane,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 12957 articles, as of 18:00, 3 May 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.

Show me promotion part[edit]

@Baruah ranuj: if you cannot tell encyclopediac content and a CV/resume apart, I cannot help you. And how are you linked with Rajbongshi? JavaHurricane 08:57, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

From which point of view , you tell that I'm linked with the person? Any proof ? I'm contributing as a volunteer. Otherwise I would work in other companiesBaruahranuj 09:50, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Baruah ranuj: I have dealt with spammers for some time; and the promotional nature of your drafts naturally aroused my suspicion. I merely asked a question without making any allegations of a WP:COI. JavaHurricane 10:12, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm bored to deal with the reviewer like you who can't co-operate with new editors. If the article was like promotional, then why you didn't try to correct them ? Bye bye enwiki .. i didn't get a good environment of writing here. Often I was marked as doing promotions by some reviewers Mind that I'm not trying to post only one article. I want that article of notable (no need to tell me on notability criteria of wiki) people should be in wikipedia. Whatever it be, bye bye. Baruahranuj 10:57, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Baruah ranuj: the fact that multiple reviewers marked your work as promotional should suggest to you that the fault lies elsewhither and not with the reviewers; it is your choice to leave enwiki, and I will not hinder it. JavaHurricane 11:24, 15 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022[edit]

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello JavaHurricane,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
@TheAafi: overriding IP blocks to force-create local accounts is only possible for sysops; mere account creators can't quite so that. I'd suggest messaging an administrator in this regard. JavaHurricane 03:33, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Bdhamilton (18:32, 15 October 2022)[edit]

Hi, there! I'm a new editor (at least, new to serious edits), and your name was added to my user page as a possible mentor. I've just submitted my first new article for review—Draft:Guns_into_Plowshares—and I was wondering if you might be willing to give me some feedback on it. I do have COI on the article, unfortunately, which I've disclosed on the talk page. But I'm hoping I managed to maintain neutrality. Thanks for any help! --Brian Hamilton (talk) 18:32, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Bdhamilton: have to say that for a new editor with a COI, you've done a pretty good job; creating an article is easily among the hardest tasks for a newcomer, and editors with COI often indulge in spam and advertising that either results in their being blocked and their work deleted, or their being left multiple messages on various parts of Wikipedia policy that result in their departure. I'll look into the article more deeply later once I'm free. JavaHurricane 10:53, 16 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Bumping this to prevent archival, I'm still not free. JavaHurricane 03:34, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Early end of the backlog drive[edit]

A few days ago, new page patrollers got the backlog to zero. Due to the unprecedented success of the backlog drive, it will be ending early—at the end of 24 October, or in approximately two hours.

Barnstars will be awarded as soon as the coords can tally the results. Streak awards will be allocated based on the first three weeks of the drive, with the last three days being counted as part of week three.

Great work everyone! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:50, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022[edit]

Hello JavaHurricane,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • If you're interested in instant messaging and chat rooms, please join us on the New Page Patrol Discord, where you can ask for help and live chat with other patrollers.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023[edit]

Hello JavaHurricane,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • There is live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.

thanks for the good advice. is it published? I just tried to do how it works. now what should I do? Smmama (talk) 08:14, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Smmama: while the page is indeed live now, it is not an article yet. For that you will have to submit the article for review by an experienced editor, using {{subst:submit}} at the top of the draft. I strongly discourage submitting the draft for review, though: you are extremely unlikely to meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines for people, and as such reviewers will probably decline to accept your draft. @Dracques: to see how to cite a source, see this (really good) help guide on referencing for beginners. This should suffice for now while you are finding your feet as a Wikipedia editor (which, mind you, isn't easy); over time, you will be able to yourself figure out the deeper nous of referencing. New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023[edit]

Hello JavaHurricane,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

New pages awaiting review as of June 30th, 2023.

Hello JavaHurricane,

The New Page Patrol team is sending you this impromptu message to inform you of a steeply rising backlog of articles needing review. If you have any extra time to spare, please consider reviewing one or two articles each day to help lower the backlog. You can start reviewing by visiting Special:NewPagesFeed. Thank you very much for your help.

Thanks for the help on my talk page[edit]

Hi. I noticed that you reverted some vandalism on my talk page. Thank you very much. This doesn't happen very often so I'm a bit worried. Would you know if there's any reason to believe that the anon was targetting me specifically? Some of my edits are a wee contentious. :S Anyway, whether or not you have more insight, I really wanted to thank you for the revert. Yours, Batongmalake (talk) 03:37, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Batongmalake: the vandalism is part of a mass attack on Wikipedia by a Nazi troll. See the ANI discussion for details. As such I don't think you have been specifically targeted. JavaHurricane 06:01, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I advise you to take a look at the signature policy; your current signature does not line up with it. Specifically, it should easily identify your username, which it currently doesn't. JavaHurricane 19:05, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'll do so Five Month Old Infant Male (talk) 23:13, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Untitlted post from IP[edit]

When I say that randomly deleting birth/death dates from a page without first checking the linked bio for a source to copy over, I mean it is covered in the vandalism policy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Vandalism#Subtle_vandalism "Vandalism that is harder to spot, or that otherwise circumvents detection, including ... reverting legitimate edits with the intent of hindering the improvement of pages." It wastes other people's time who have to come by later to find out what was deleted and re-add it when there was an easily copyable source in the bio already. Especially because if it's not caught quickly then it's "harder to spot." So it qualifies as sneaky vandalism, actively making the date pages worse by cutting content that is factually accurate and relevant. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.143.192.237 (talk) 20:40, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The editors who reverted you were acting in good faith and enforcing policy - and in one case at least your reference did not support the content you added. In any case, the editors clearly acting in good faith means that the edits were emphatically not vandalism, and labelling it so repeatedly is just a personal attack. Question from WikiSaurabhIN (11:32, 17 September 2023)[edit]

i want to write a biography of one legend person who was a great man of his village but due to lack of social networking there ,,,,no one knows him so how can i start --WikiSaurabhIN (talk) 11:32, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@WikiSaurabhIN: Wikipedia policy is that content in an article must be verifiable and sourced to reliable (trustable) sources. If a topic doesn't have any verifiable information about it in a reliable source, the topic should get its own article - and that applies for a person also. This is better codified in Wikipedia's guidelines for notability. And I wonder: exactly how would you write an article on a person no one outside of the village knows about, which is well-sourced? New pages patrol newsletter[edit]

Hello JavaHurricane,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

November Articles for creation backlog drive[edit]

Hello JavaHurricane:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 2500 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from LuckyDodo (15:49, 3 November 2023)[edit]

Hello how are you? I was wondering what would be the steps to create a business page on wikipedia? Thanks Mary-Queenie --LuckyDodo (talk) 15:49, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(by talk reader) @LuckyDodo: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not advertising. We don't have business pages. Wikipedians do write articles about notable businesses but I'm sure your case is not going to qualify. Can you explain your particular interest in trying to write about a business? Chris Troutman (talk) 16:12, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Chris, nothing advertising related. I actually just wanted to know how we publish info on businesss - like when you search Netflix for instance, you have a wikipedia info search result on the right saying what is the business, its share price and so forth. Any advice on this please? LuckyDodo (talk) 16:22, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yours is a popular request but still not allowed. Thanks to SEO, many folks want to use this wiki to ensure content pops up in the search but that is not what we're here for. As I mentioned above, notability and independent referencing are two hurdles that most entities don't meet. What business do you have in mind? I recommend you submit a request at WP:Requested articles or offer a reward for someone else to write an article for you. Chris Troutman (talk) 16:34, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Chris for the insights, will do! LuckyDodo (talk) 16:37, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
