Hey, BF11! At the risk of showing my lack of completely reading the entire thread at the VP, I feel like your objection is to wasting the research/work, however nominal, that Lugnuts did do? Just as a general question, would listifying or redirecting or merging such stubs be a solution you could live with? Valereee (talk) 17:48, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

  • I've got several reasons to object to the proposal, among them is the fact that these are steps in BilledMammal's plan on drastically reducing the amount of sports articles on the website (this was one of several planned proposals he discussed with a few others; some others were getting rid of 30,000+ more Olympians, the rest of the Lugnuts cricketers, expanding the scope to include editors other than Lugnuts, getting rid of tens of thousands of geographical articles, etc.); if this passes, he will gradually increase the stakes of the proposals (next it'll be twice the size, then he'll likely get rid of the rest of Lugnuts' stub creations, then he'll try to expand it to include all editors, etc.): I strongly dislike the precedent that would be set by that. I know many users believe that stubs are worthless, but I have a much different opinion and think that at least something is better than nothing at all. As for listifying or redirecting or merging such stubs I'm not sure exactly how that'd work; many played for different teams, competed in different sports, etc. – do you or BilledMammal already have set out how that would be accomplished? WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

  • @Gonzo fan2007: By the way, seeing that you have a featured article, do you think Brocato would ever have a chance at becoming one? BeanieFan11 (talk) 20:22, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
    • Honestly, almost any article can do it. It's just a lot of work and a real serious focus on the tiny details. or Packers sweep, I had a lot of people review it beforehand. The more eyes you can get on it the better, especially people who have a lot of FAC experience. Just be prepared for a lot of nitpicky details, focus on commas, perfection in references, etc. Check out Wikipedia:Mentoring for FAC too, that helped. For Bob Mann (American football), I also had a co-nominator, which was nice. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 20:35, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
      • @Gonzo fan2007: Thanks for the tips - do you think it would be a worthwhile effort for me to try to get Brocato to FA, or do you think it'd be better if I were to work on some other article to try to achieve my first FA? Looking at my current creations and work, he'd probably have the best chance I think, as he's one of only four above 50,000 bytes and the others probably aren't in as good shape. BeanieFan11 (talk) 20:59, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
        • Honestly, size isn't too big of an issue. Packers sweep is only 27k bytes. I'm biased, but Burt Gustafson would be another good option. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 21:14, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello BeanieFan11,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

"...have every NFL player with an article"

Greetings. I happened upon your constructive, source-providing contribution to an AfC and checked out your page. You seem to be doing a lot of work and good work too. Now, you do not have to answer this, of course, but I'm curious about the statement that your objective is to "have every NFL player with an article". Statistically, it seems rather improbable that each and every NFL player in history is Wiki-notable. Do you believe otherwise, perhaps specifically for NFL? If not, how will you go about meeting your objective? Thanks in advance. And take care. -The Gnome (talk) 14:19, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

  • @The Gnome: Interesting that you're asking as I was thinking actually just thinking about that recently — the whole reason I stayed at Wikipedia after joining in 2020 (I only wanted to write two things first, but then found it interesting and continued) was to complete an article on every NFL player of all time (I estimate there's about 1,000 – 1,500 left). At the time they were all given automatic notability, and I believe I added the statement you asking about there early on. Unfortunately—at least I view it that way—the WP:NSPORTS2022 discussion + the deletion discussion on Pete Vainowski determined that every NFL player was not notable. I would estimate the majority of those currently missing articles do satisfy GNG (as well as the vast majority of those who do have articles), but I admit there are some who do not pass GNG with available sources and thus am not trying to get them articles on Wikipedia. I never really got to updating my user page about that subject — after all, it was the whole reason I'm here — but I'll probably re-write my user page lead at some point in the near future as I've become more of a "improve football / sports in general"-type editor than an "improve every NFL player article"-type editor due to notability changes. Tips on getting QPQs done faster

I don't love doing QPQs myself, so I totally get it. One way I've been able to get them done lately is by not really thinking about them as QPQs at all, but rather looking through DYKN whenever I get a chance -- no matter what I have in the pipeline -- and seeing if there's anything that stands out, positively or negative. The latter is important too -- there are a lot of nominations that have serious queries like BLP issues, or where the article itself is alright but the hook might need work, and if I find I'm starting to have an opinion about a nomination I generally take the shot to review it. I keep a list in my sandbox of everything I've reviewed but haven't used yet, so when it's time to nominate something I just pull it from there, not needing to remember to fill in a QPQ later. QPQs never expire, so you can keep hold of them as long as you need. You can also search your templatespace contributions to see if there's anything you don't recognize that looks like it might be an unused credit -- sometimes you'd be surprised.

Another thing that's been really great is keeping track of my 'QPQ chains' -- who reviewed in a chain before me, how long it kept going afterwards, etc. It's surprisingly fun to pick out how long ago something started, how long it kept running, what patterns you can spot (people who review one another, specific subject areas, etc) -- and sometimes you find something straight-up insane. DYK for Ben Brown (American football)

On 27 September 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Ben Brown (American football), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Ben Brown was the seventh member of his family to play American football for the Ole Miss Rebels? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Ben Brown (American football). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Ben Brown (American football)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Sorry about that one. When I checked, it did mention a championship, but without any references. It can be difficult for non-US contributors to understand the ins and outs of US sports, so his significance needs to be more clearly stated. Deb (talk) 08:23, 27 September 2023 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Terry Randolph

The article Terry Randolph you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Terry Randolph for comments about the article, and Talk:Terry Randolph/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has never appeared on the Main Page as a "Did you know" item, and has not appeared within the last year either as "Today's featured article", or as a bold link under "In the news" or in the "On this day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear at DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On this day" column do not affect DYK eligibility.
