Revision as of 02:10, 28 November 2022

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 22:40 on 27 April 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems, because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed, determined not to be an error, or the item has rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors with "In the news"

I think the blurb about the protests in China should not be called "mass protests" (yet). The linked article does not contain "mass", and in a country of 1.4 billion people protests in 5 cities that are not necessarily linked do not reach the nationwide scale that "mass protosts" imply. I would just remove the word "mass" from the blurb and keep the rest as is. Chaosquo (talk) 20:21, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

While I agree the article doesn't say "mass", it does say "widespread civil unrest" - is that equivalent? Sam Walton (talk) 23:06, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see any harm in removing the word "mass" and have done so. That seems NPOV to me. If others see it differently and sources back up that we are dealing with "mass protests", please discuss here. Schwede66 23:13, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Agree that the scale and context of the protests are better left explained in the article, and the blurb should be neutral, with it's significance sufficiently evidenced by its posting.—Bagumba (talk) 01:20, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Current DYK

Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina

That is not quite what the source says: "Unlike any other state official, the Lieutenant Governor straddles the executive and legislative branches". There is, of course, also the judicial branch. It may well be true but not verifiable by the current source - Dumelow (talk) 09:34, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Plus Council of State, according to its article, is a singular body, so "among" should be "in", "within", or "among the members of". Bazza (talk) 09:47, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It seems easy to verify. The first listed source, Adams & Bostic says "Unlike any other state official, the lieutenant governor straddles the executive and legislative branches, vested with constitutional and statutory powers in both branches."
I agree with Bazza that "in" would read better than "among" but maybe it's an ENGVAR issue. The author and reviewers who agreed the hook should always be consulted in such cases. @Indy beetle, ErnestKrause, Onegreatjoke, PizzaKing13, and RoySmith:
Andrew🐉(talk) 10:06, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
My point on the branches was that the source says the position in unique for straddling the executive and legislative branches, while the hook says it is unique in straddling any two branches of government - Dumelow (talk) 10:27, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Dumelow So would * ... that the Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina, uniquely within the Council of State, has powers in both the executive and legislative branches of government? keep us both happy? For brevity, * ... that the Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina, uniquely within the Council of State, has powers in both the executive and legislature? might instead be used. Bazza (talk) 14:05, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, either of those would be reflect the wording of the source - Dumelow (talk) 14:48, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Note that this was originally correct, but was changed because the hook was too similar to the source. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 20:03, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This will be on the main page in 10 minutes. SL93 (talk) 23:50, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
 Done I've used Bazza's longer hook. Schwede66 00:50, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Today's OTD

Shi Jingtang: Almost the entire article is cited to the near contemporary Old History of the Five Dynasties (974) and the slightly later Zizhi Tongjian (1084). Modern scholarship must be used, I doubt the article can be improved in time. Happy to look at any suggested replacement - Dumelow (talk) 08:10, 26 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

1660 – At London's Gresham College, Robert Boyle, John Wilkins, Christopher Wren and other leading scientists founded a learned society now known as the Royal Society

The presence of Boyle, Wilkins and Wren is not mentioned in the article. I've rescued the dead link at the end of the paragraph on its founding but it supports only the last sentence, I've tagged the rest as citations needed. Disappointing for a Good Article - Dumelow (talk) 08:17, 26 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There is a separate article at Gresham College and the formation of the Royal Society that deals with this in more detail. But the sourcing is equally inadequate but it does list the 12 original members. Schwede66 20:11, 26 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Gregorio Perfecto birth date not cited - Dumelow (talk) 08:23, 26 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I've had a look and can't find anything authoritative. What I did see is that the first volume of Justices of the Supreme Court of the Philippines and the bios in there contain birth dates. Volume II, which deals with the period where Perfecto was a judge, isn't on Google Books. Schwede66 20:00, 26 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"American swimmer Caeleb Dressel won the most gold medals at the games with five", I couldn't find this stated in the source cited. I don't doubt that its true but it should be verifiable - Dumelow (talk) 07:36, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I've placed a failed verification tag in the article; maybe that'll get some action. Schwede66 18:00, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
