Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Nyttend (talk | contribs) at 03:56, 27 December 2013 (Adding the template for the sake of making an example). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 02:50 on 26 April 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems, because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed, determined not to be an error, or the item has rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Nitpicking Alan Turing

Grammar isn't my strong suit but "convicted in 1952 of gross indecency for homosexual activity," seems less ambiguous. His "homosexual activity" was in 1952 so the former kind of works both ways but it isn't central to the point that his relationship was also in 1952. Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 16:46, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I tend to agree, and have adjusted accordingly. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:11, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Russian Amnesty

Pussy Riot is not a 'Rock Band'. If you think it is, provide a reference to a concert, or recording, or anything at all beyond miming in a church. You won't find one. They're performance 'artists' usually known as Voina, and 'Pussy Riot' was a pose they adopted on one occasion for the supposed purpose of objecting to the relations between church and government. Claiming that they were or are a 'Rock Band' is simply repeating a politicised marketing lie and has no place in an encyclopedia.182.247.149.74 (talk) 07:34, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Pussy Riot article describes them as "a Russian feminist punk rock protest group". As the Main Page is reflective of the article, you'll need to get it changed there before we can do anything here. Thanks. howcheng {chat} 19:22, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I tend to agree, ... "It's rock Jim, but not as we know it...". Maybe we should select two of the other words from "Russian feminist punk rock protest group"? Martinevans123 (talk) 20:49, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Why is the release of Greenpeace protestors not mentioned in the blurb? Surely that's more important to the globe than Pussy Riot? The Rambling Man (talk) 21:34, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a length limit on ITN items, and if so, how many characters-'n-spaces is it? Yngvadottir (talk) 21:36, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:42, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done; Pussy Riot description changed to "feminist punk rock protest group". For the Greenpeace protesters, however, I see only a statement that they "may" be released later in the week, so I did not add them. Yngvadottir (talk) 22:11, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Freed on bail already, now charges dropped. And the blurb doesn't mention "release", it mentions "amnesty"..... BBC. The Rambling Man (talk) 23:08, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think the Greenpeace protesters are not part of the amnesty, because they have not yet been convicted. The prosecutions are being dropped through a separate process.
I don't see how the change to the blurb either improves it or addresses the point raised - it just makes it longer. Formerip (talk) 23:32, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The blurb is already far too long, and needs refinement. Including Pussy Riot but excluding Greenpeace is obviously a choice you have to make. Shame! The Rambling Man (talk) 23:40, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK, it is now: "After the pardoning of businessman Mikhail Khodorkovsky (pictured), an amnesty law in Russia leads to the release of thousands of prisoners, including two members of the feminist punk rock protest group Pussy Riot, and dropping of charges against participants in a Greenpeace protest." The BBC source The Rambling Man cited does say it was under the amnesty law (for some reason the other BBC article I consulted earlier didn't have that updated information). However, I agree it's long, and I'd feel better if we had an article, or article section at least, on this amnesty law. Open to suggestions or to reverts from other admins. Yngvadottir (talk) 23:51, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Remove " the feminist punk rock protest group", that'd help. It's wikilinked, just as Greenpeace is linked. The Rambling Man (talk) 23:52, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Or, "An amnesty law in Russia leads to the release of thousands of prisoners, including Mikhail Khodorkovsky (pictured), two members of Pussy Riot, and the dropping of charges against participants in a Greenpeace protest." The Rambling Man (talk) 23:56, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done, took your first suggestion, and added a parallel "the" before "dropping". Yngvadottir (talk) 23:57, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Poramadulla Central College

I believe that the original hook, rather than ALT1, may have been promoted from Template:Did you know nominations/Poramadulla Central College. I don't think it's a huge deal. The original is boring but I don't see any other specific problems - but I'm not sure that the original underwent a full review. EricEnfermero HOWDY! 13:43, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've double checked the hook references, and switched to the alternative hook. Harrias talk 13:57, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
