Redirect to Very important person per WP:Redirects for discussion/Log/2023 January 15#Vip. 176.88.80.215 (talk) 20:14, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose: I don't think this is the same situation as the previous discussion. There were no lowercase versions of "Vip" at the DAB in that discussion whereas there's two entries that include "Vips" with a leading capital and the rest lowercase at VIPS. Hey man im josh (talk) 20:39, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: The VIPS DAB covers both VIPS and Vips, with Jüri Vips being at the page, so this seems valid to me. TartarTorte 21:30, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep since the "S" isn't an initial for anything if this proposal occurs. Steel1943 (talk) 02:07, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep – Article titles are typically singular, so it's far more likely for someone searching "vips" to search for "VIPS" than for the plural of "VIP". "VIPS" itself was deemed as having no primary topic, and "Vips"/"vips" isn't different enough to be any different. It's far less plausible for someone searching for "vips" to mean Very important person than it is for singular "vip". Also the previous discussion's DAB did have a pair of articles that were referred to as "Vip", though they weren't as notable as the primary meaning of "VIP" Randi Moth (talk) 13:55, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Surname-only redirect to an entry in an election results table, representing a person whose standalone WP:BLP was deleted at AFD in February. Surnames are not unique to one specific person, so should not be commandeered to represent one person like this, especially if the person hasn't actually been properly established as notable in the first place. Ambiguous search term which could refer to any Chinese university in Category:Universities and colleges in China. Hey man im josh (talk) 16:51, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep "Renmin" means "people" in Chinese, so this redirect is a literal translation of the university's name.Aaron Liu (talk) 17:30, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's a modification of the name from what I'm reading. The name "People's University of China" is less ambiguous and not the same as "University of Chinese People". Hey man im josh (talk) 17:41, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak keep as a plausible mistranslation. "中国人民大学" could be literally translated this way ("Chinese people" for 中国人民, "university" for 大学), and some searching suggests that it occasionally is[1][2]. I'm not convinced by the concern about ambiguity – I don't think this is a likely search term for information about Chinese universities in general. —Mx. May or may not qualify for deletion per WP:RFOREIGN. The subject is not ostensibly related to the Spanish language, although a previous discussion did elect to keep redirects like "fútbol" due to the connection between association football and the Spanish-speaking world, which I suppose could also apply here. • Retarget to inode (my preference, I think) or File system#Directories. Skynxnex (talk) 18:28, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete What does "inode/directory" mean? In file systems in which directory entries, instead of containing all information about the file or directory to which they refer, point to an item in a collection of items that contain that information, one of those items - whether called an inode or not - can refer to a directory, and directory entries refer to those items, but they're separate concepts, and I don't see what a combination of the names for the two concepts, with a slash between them, would mean. Guy Harris (talk) 20:49, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Now that we know what "inode/directory" means, and now that "Not mentioned in target." has been fixed, there's a reason to keep it, and have it point to the page for file system directories. Guy Harris (talk) 07:24, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete WP:SUBPAGE locations should not be used in mainspace -- 65.92.244.151 (talk) 17:39, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep – The redirect is properly tagged as {{R from media type}}. "inode/directory" is indeed the media type used for directories in Unix systems[1]. The slash is neither used as a subpage nor as a natural "OR", but as a separator between a type and a sub-type. It's not ambiguous and the target is correct. It is unclear why "Beida" redirects here. It's only mentioned in the notes, but is ambiguous with other uses at Beyda Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 10:13, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep – On a search in Google Books, the majority of results use it as a synonymous name for the Peking University (short for Beijing Daxue, apparently). Most other results refer to the Arabic surname "Beida", though there doesn't seem to be anyone notable with that surname. It seems safe to assume that the university is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for the redirect, and the Bayda DAB page is already linked in the hatnote. However, the lead section of the university's article could be expanded to include the shortened name, and the Bayda DAB page seems to be missing several pages that have Beida could refer to. Randi Moth (talk) 13:26, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was keep. There is a rough consensus that this is a plausible typo, and no clear argument for how the redirect is harmful beyond being "unnecessary". signed, Rosguill talk 20:24, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This redirect is a typo, not a misspelling (cf. Finalnd, Isalm, Rcie). Mast303 (talk) 23:55, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Speedy keep: This is a completely plausible typo for one to make. Aasim - Herrscher of Wikis ❄️ 23:59, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete: Help readers learn to spell. Otherwise the precedent is numerous "plausible typo" redirects for every article on WP. --IHTS (talk) 00:49, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • Oh no. What horror. Save a few clicks here and there. Add a minuscule maintenance burden. It's the end of the world. We've allowed {{R from misspelling}}s since ever, by the way – fearmongering over potential precedent when it comes to redirects is just that; it hasn't resulted in a sizeable proportion of the set of redirects that would be adjudged plausible typos being created. The way the redirect process currently works on en.wp is that redirects are judged upon their individual merits, and this redirect is fairly obviously helpful – all that redirects are created to be. J947edits 05:22, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
      • The triviality of this, including your energy to create a specifically sarcastic reply, is beyond comprehension. But if it gives you a sense of meaning & purpose, you go for it! --IHTS (talk) 02:21, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as well-used. J947edits 05:22, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete If you type "c-h-e-s-s-s-s" in Wikipedia's search bar (or "c-h-e-s-s-s" if it wasn't a redirect), it will show you "Chess" as the top choice. There is no need for this sort of typo redirect. Grorp (talk) 02:28, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • FTR, the reader might just immediately enter without realising their mistake (which is where all those pageviews seem to come from), or not use the search bar at all. J947edits 04:59, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. I don't think 850 hits in 7 years is well-used, but redirects for typos aren't a burden in any way. -- Mikeblas (talk) 20:21, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. When I first saw this redirect, I thought it was a misspelling for Cheese. Steel1943 (talk) 05:35, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • Are you mistaking this redirect for Chesse, which was put up for discussion a few months prior? Randi Moth (talk) 14:10, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if this is a serious comment or a funny comment, but either way, I laughed. (Assuming it was serious, the redirect I saw was the nominated redirect, and thus the one I'm referring to. But wow, the other one ... quite possibly, but I must have not been looking at it when it was posted.) Steel1943 (talk) 16:04, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment – Note that the prior point about entering "chessss" leading to Chess comes from Chess srategy and tactics being a redirect to the article that contains the letters "c-h-e-s-s-s-s" in sequential order. Since that redirect no longer points to Chess, the article no longer comes up in a search for "chessss". Though that Chess srategy and tactics redirect itself may be considered an implausible typo and the target of Chess strategy and tactics may be an unnecessary disambiguation page (that would likely be dealt with as WP:XY if it was a redirect), this is out of the scope of the current discussion. Nonetheless, Chess games pointing to Chess should mean that searching for "Chesss" will make Chess come up on top even without Chesss. Randi Moth (talk) 17:19, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak keep a simple reduplication error of a single character is a very common type of typo misspelling. Unlike "chessss" which has two reduplications, which is much less common. -- 65.92.244.151 (talk) 17:42, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Plausible typos are a legitimate use of redirects. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 11:18, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Speedy keep: I'm not aware of any Wikipedia policy against typos in redirects in article space, or any that differentiate between typos and misspellings. WP:POFR explicitly says "Likely misspellings" are one of the purposes of redirects, and I would say that "Chesss" is a likely misspelling/typo of "Chess". No mention at the target. I think it refers to the magi, but this does not seem to be one of the names used to designate Zoroastrianism so it is an unhelpful redirect.

Therefore, I propose deletion. Veverve (talk) 21:11, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
