Grease (country)[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was no consensus. Given the even spread of opinion after 16 !votes, with weak !votes on both sides of the debate, I don't think a relist is going to bring us closer to a consensus. signed, Rosguill talk 16:51, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Implausible search term, in part due to the (country) disambiguator. Supported by this barely getting any views since creation. Randi Moth (talk) 20:58, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Neutral - Although I'm surprised it's lasted THIS long...Americanfreedom (talk) 22:03, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nominator's rationale. ReneeWrites (talk) 23:03, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as reasonably plausible misspelling since grease is a common word that is pronounced the same. Also note R3 doesn't apply as this is nearly a year old. A7V2 (talk) 23:14, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep – a helpful redirect for non-native speakers, kids, and people who simply can't spell. J947edits 01:35, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per above. Useful and harmless, even if it does look a bit absurd. CycloneYoris talk! 06:26, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Utterly pointless given the disambiguator. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:38, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per A7V2 and J947. This is both harmless and helpful taking those people who use it to the content they are looking for. Thryduulf (talk) 17:13, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep; harmless and possibly helpful. InterstellarGamer12321 (talk) 18:31, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak delete it doesn't appear ambiguous but is implausible. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:49, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak keep. Not ambiguous, and honestly, English can be a difficult language to spell out phonetically at times. (For example, "tough" and "though"; one letter difference, but both have "gh" pronounced differently.) No harm done here. Steel1943 (talk) 18:00, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment as nominator – It's primarily the (country) disambiguator part that makes it less plausible for me. I find it unlikely that someone will search for this term, since that would show that both:
· They're aware of the Wikipedia titling conventions (i.e. they don't land on the general Grease DAB page, which links to Greece (disambiguation)).
· They're sure enough that the country's name is spelt "Grease" to attempt searching for the redirect's name.
The potential overlap between these two categories is fairly plausible to be small, however it is indeed likely not non-existent. Over its lifetime of ~a year, the redirect has received 27 views prior to the nomination, 13 being within a week of creation and so likely related to it being a new page.
Overall, I'd like to shift my position to a more Weak delete from the stronger one I've expressed in the nomination: I still find it unlikely to be a helpful redirect, but it's not as implausible of a search term as I've initially thought. Randi Moth (talk) 21:30, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete: A highly unlikely search term, made implausible by the (country) disambiguator. Drdpw (talk) 15:05, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, implausible. Sad that I can't say salt, as salt and grease go well together... LilianaUwU (talk / contribs) 07:28, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Thryduulf. The word in combination with the disambiguator leads the reader to the target. Examples of bad disambiguators and redirects would be Grease (the country), Grease, the country, Grease country, Grease (Europe), Grease (Greece)! Jay 💬 04:08, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, entirely implausible. The initial word maybe, but not with the disambiguator. CMD (talk) 08:36, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Yeah, I know – wtf? Paine the enduring inclusionist??? Have to agree with editor Crouch, Swale, tho', because I don't think anybody will type in the parenthetical dab if searching. And this title does not come up at all on the dropdown list if just "grease" is typed into the WP search field, nor does that seem to find anything but the film and the goo on Google. Type "grease" into the WP searcher and find the dab page with "Greece (disambiguation)" at the bottom. That gets the country seeker/bad speller where they wanna be and completely bypasses this poorly viewed, unnecessary redirect. Gotta go along with the delete rationales this time <<<shell shock>>>. Happy New Year to all! P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'r there 10:56, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Type "Grease country" and this redirect is the only result in the dropdown, and isn't that the point of this redirect, when the plain "Grease" doesn't get the reader what he wants? Parentheses are for editors, not readers. Wikisearch too does not expect readers to type in parentheses, but looks for what the reader has typed, but may be found inside of the parentheses. The result of the discussion was soft redirect to Wikt:subsequently. (non-admin closure) ~ Eejit43 (talk) 00:19, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects to mathematical concept, not the ideal solution. Not really the title of any encyclopaedic topic from what I can see. Retarget to the cross-project redirect at subsequent in lieu of a more direct soft redirect to wikt:subsequently. Second choice delete. A distant third choice: retarget to Time#Sequence of events. J947edits 10:28, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Relisting comment: Retarget to Subsequent or soft redirect to wikt:subsequently?
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, CycloneYoris talk! 16:39, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Duckmather: Participants were discussing a potential retarget to Subsequent and a soft redirect to wikt:subsequently. Subsequently on the other hand, was never considered as a potential target, since that redirect is precisely the same one that is being discussed in this RfD. Vip[edit]

The result of the discussion was retarget to Very important person. (non-admin closure) CycloneYoris talk! 18:49, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Vip should be redirected to Very important person, which is the redirect target of VIP. Vip can be pronounced "/vɪp/" or "/viː'aɪ.piː/, but I think the previous pronunciation is fine. I have a source where "vip" is not only read all caps, and it is this: "1". 176.88.87.119 (talk) 12:36, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Support – Note that WP:DIFFCAPS does not strictly apply here, since all entries within the linked DAB page are acronyms spelt in all-capitals, other than Virgil Partch and Vip mobile, and the primary topic of VIP is a more plausible target. Randi Moth (talk) 21:07, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Very important person per nom. A7V2 (talk) 23:15, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support although the target isn't a proper noun its acronym is still written in all caps so it makes sense to treat this the same as the all caps version. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:54, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was retarget to Linux distribution. (non-admin closure) CycloneYoris talk! 18:47, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

These should have the same target. 1234qwer1234qwer4 11:42, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Weak delete Linux distrobutions due to the typo (distributions -> distrobutions), although it does get about a view per day. Otherwise, keep/retarget both to Linux distribution, since neither title makes reference to a list. Duckmather (talk) 21:37, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget both to Linux distribution. Linux distribution is often shortened to Linux distro, so I can see how distrobution is a plausible typo, but I think they should both redirect to Linux distribution since that seems like the more reasonable target since it's just a pluralization of that name. - Aoidh (talk) 01:09, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was no consensus. (non-admin closure) ~ Eejit43 (talk) 00:23, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A RM at Talk:Life of Christ in art#Requested move 8 December 2015 decided this redirect's current target; I disagree with this. The redirect should be retargetted to Life of Christ (disambiguation), because there is no primary topic for this title and it is the name of numerous works. I have already fixed all the incoming wikilinks. Veverve (talk) 15:00, 20 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Relisting comment: Given that the redirect appears to have a connection or inter-dependence with Life of Jesus, and almost all participants had an opinion on its primacy of the latter, I am bundling it here. And given that this is a late bundling, a closer is free to skip it if they think this RfD is ready for close; or if the nom thinks this makes the original RfD more confusing, I can revert it.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Jay 💬 07:41, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jay: I do think it makes the RfD more confusing. I did not think the original RfD would be a place to discuss another redirect, for the sake of clarity, but some users did. Veverve (talk) 08:38, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have reverted the bundling, and Life of Jesus (disambiguation) may be nominated as a fresh RfD. Jay 💬 09:45, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Neither that situation nor this one require RFD. Both needed RM. That's the problem. An RM should have been opened at Talk:Life of Christ (disambiguation). Likewise, an RM could be opened at Talk:Life of Jesus. In my opinion, this should be closed as no consensus and an RM opened. Srnec (talk) 02:14, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This heavy metal Eubot redirect was created for the band's original name (Green Jellö), but it hasn't been used much since January 2015. Not sure why we still need it lying around if it's essentially collecting dust in the search bar. Regards, SONIC678 04:28, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete: Heavy metal umlauts, unless the band's name is actually in a language that uses umlauts, are not assumed to be expanded with an e next to the vowel with an umlaut, so I'm fine with deletion as this is a highly unlikely search term. TartarTorte 02:55, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
