Tool to check wikilinks from mainspace to draftspace?[edit]

Is there a tool that detects wikilinks from mainspace to draftspace? --Hammersoft (talk) 02:58, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Hammersoft for edits later than November 10th, 2020 by non-ec editors there's Special:AbuseFilter/1090. Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 06:58, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not a tool, but I wrote quarry:query/59495 some time ago (and have just rerun it); it generates a complete list. Pretty trivial to turn it into a database report that updates itself on-wiki if you want. —Cryptic 07:17, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Turns out there was already an onwiki version at User:SDZeroBot/Articles with links to drafts - it happened to be one of the bot's demonstration queries in its botrfa. With its operator's permission, I've updated the generating query and moved it to WP:Database reports/Articles with links to drafts so, y'know, people can find it before they duplicate the work instead of after. —Cryptic 09:39, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cryptic: That's perfect! Thank you! --Hammersoft (talk) 16:10, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think reference number 3 is not quite right - publisher, etc - please check if you can. Thanks Srbernadette (talk) 03:04, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Srbernadette: I am not sure how to "fix" that citation. It is a link to a stock photo website showing a hand-written letter. This does nothing to support the sentence in the article about the Library of Australia. Perhaps the url provided is wrong? I suggest re-evaluating your source. RudolfRed (talk) 04:05, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is https://trove.nla.gov.au/work/234023442?keyword=david%20blackburn getting you to what you want? BlueWren0123 (talk) 04:38, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also https://trove.nla.gov.au/people/1466521 mentions the letters from Elizabeth (unpublished) and also links to the #2 reference text. BlueWren0123 (talk) 05:21, 10 January 2024 (U/* Assorted Information */ TC)
Yes, please use the second Trove reference. Please fix and thank you in advance. 175.38.42.62 (talk) 06:33, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Page not protected. You can edit. BlueWren0123 (talk) 08:38, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Difficult for me to edit, sorry. The citations mentioned are OK now I think...

Please can you add this file to the "Wikimedia Commons has media related to David Blackburn." at the bottom of his page: David Blackburn (Royal Navy officer)- which has many images in it already. Is that a reasonable idea? Here is the file - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sarah_Meadows_Martineau_(d.1800).jpg Thank you in advance 175.38.42.62 (talk) 10:02, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am also unfamiliar with how to do that. Needs help from someone else.BlueWren0123 (talk) 10:22, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're proposing to add commons:Category:David Blackburn to commons:File:Sarah_Meadows_Martineau_(d.1800).jpg. You add categories to images in Commons just as you add categories to articles in Wikipedia. But Martineau wasn't Blackburn. (Likewise, Edith, Sacheverell, and numerous other more or less noteworthy Sitwells weren't Osbert Sitwell, and commons:Category:Osbert Sitwell doesn't include pictures of them, other than incidentally.) -- Hoary (talk) 11:42, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Information taken from an external link - inline citation needed?[edit]

I have failed to deduct it from Wikipedia:Citing sources and Wikipedia:External links: When an information in an article is directly taken from an external link (update: which is set in the "external link" section of the article) - does that require an inline citation? If required, let's distinguish cases depending on their complexity: From only one external link to only one specific webpage (so one click is sufficient for the reader to find the information for the source) to several structured external websites (so the reader might have to guess in which source to look for the informatiuon, and then find the right webpage for getting the info of the source). --KnightMove (talk) 11:29, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, KnightMove. I'm not sure I quite understand what you are asking, but I'll answer as best I can.
All information in an article should be available from a reliable published source - it doesn't matter what medium that source is published in, as long as a reader can in principle obtain it (eg by ordering a book from a major library). If the source is online, it's easier, but that's not required.
The policies don't absolutely require all information to be cited to its published source, but it's certainly preferred to cite everything inline, and if information has been challenged, then it must be.
The citation should enable the reader to determine the likely value of the source, and to find it specifically; so it should contain information such as title, date, author, publisher, journal, issue, page number (obviously, not all of these are relevant to every citation). If the information is available online, then it is helpful (but not essential) to provide a link to it, within the citation - but there's no point in providing a link which doesn't lead directly to it.
Apart from citations, external links are allowed in articles only in restricted circumstances: see WP:ELYES.
Have I answered your question? ColinFine (talk) 12:22, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but unfortunately not. I have added a clarification. --KnightMove (talk) 14:03, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If I understand your situation, the external link should be converted into an inline reference (and removed from the External links section). Clarityfiend (talk) 14:13, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why would you remove an external link, which perfectly serves the purpose of providing further information on the article topic to the reader, from the external link section and "hide" it among inline references which do, in general, not serve that purpose; just because an information from the external link was added in the article? As most articles contain material from external links by default, this would reduce "external link" sections to absurdity. --KnightMove (talk) 15:29, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@KnightMove: Because Wikipedia is not a link farm, and external links are supposed to be used sparingly. See Wikipedia:External links. However, if the external link is really useful for further reading and it is separately also being used as a reference, then keep it in both places. -Arch dude (talk) 18:50, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks, I will make it so. --KnightMove (talk) 07:22, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Editing Mediawiki[edit]

I would like to add an edit suggestion to Mediawiki but I couldn't find a a place to comment on the GitHub. Where should I comment?

My suggestion is as follows:

Is there a way to move a a section of an article and keep transfer the edit history to the new page in Wikipedia? wikipedia:Section_move#Step_5:_Move_the_content Implies that this isn't possible. If there is a Mediawiki fork with this feature, I recommend for it to be added to the main branch. If not I will begin development, if there is interest. Garvey 96 (talk) 11:36, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would start at WP:VPT. That's specifically within Wikipedia, but it's likely that people there can tell you whether the facility is available, whether it has been discussed before, or where to go next. ColinFine (talk) 12:23, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, there is no such capability. The MediaWiki database does not record which section of a page is being edited, so it is not possible to select only the edits which changed content in any particular section. When we are moving the content of an entire section to a different page, our content license requires attribution to the original contributors, and our policy on copying within Wikipedia suggests that noting the origin either with a link in the edit summary or a template on the talk page of the destination page satisfies the attribution requirement.
I don't want to say it's impossible, but I think it would be a very large challenge to implement history-preserving section moves. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 14:06, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's feasible to copy the entire history of a page - not just those relevant to one section - into another title, with the right permissions: export to xml, then import it back at another title. It's not practical at Wikipedia itself, though, since exports are limited to 1000 revisions, importing from xml is limited to stewards and these two users, and I doubt they would be willing to do it. —Cryptic 15:24, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It would probably be more practical for someone who is an admin on both Wikipedia and one of its import sources (a surprisingly large group of people given that includes test2wiki where anyone who is an admin here would probably be given it on request) to import the page from enwiki to some other wiki and then import it back here. But, while I personally think this is sometimes a reasonable thing to do, the consensus generally is to not do it (i.e Wikipedia:Requests for page importation/Archive 9#Import of en:Triplex locomotive to User:Pechristener/Multiplex locomotive), which I will respect. * Pppery * it has begun... 15:33, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Once upon a time mw:Extension:Duplicator existed, but it was never deployed to WMF wikis and bitrotted away. * Pppery * it has begun... 15:33, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Garvey 96: You're new here so you may not know how our article sections typically work. A section heading may be added to existing content which was written over years. Paragraphs or sentences may be moved in and out of a section within the same article. A full page edit may make changes to both a section and other parts of the page. Even if an edit only changes one section, many users don't use the section edit feature which adds the section name in the edit summary. Edits by bots usually don't have a section name in the edit summary. And a section may be renamed multiple times anyway. Page histories are shown in chronological order. If a section is moved to an existing page with a page history then a merged page history would be a huge mess if edits to the two original pages are interleaved. The only realistic option appears to be copying the entire page history to a new page like mw:Extension:Duplicator did but we never used it. I suggest you drop the idea. There are too many problems and we don't need it when we can just link the source page in the edit summary if a section is moved. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:01, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How should I mark this as resolved. or archive it Garvey 96 (talk) 11:09, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Group-IB Company Page[edit]

Hello, We would like to publish a company page for one of our Clients, Group-IB, how can we do that? 80.227.124.67 (talk) 13:53, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For one, you should create an account that explicitly discloses your paid relationship to the client. Typically that is made on your user page. You may start a draft, but be aware that if it passes muster (that is, it isn't promotional or written in a non-neutral tone) and makes it into the encyclopedia proper, neither you nor your client will have control (nor will you be encouraged to directly edit it at that point) over what is written down if reliable sources state information, even those that depict your client in a bad light. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 13:57, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Once you've disclosed your connection with the subject, as suggested above, I'd like to direct you to our Articles Wizard. This tool will assist you in determining whether the topic you wish to write about is suitable for a Wikipedia article. Upon completing the wizard, if your subject aligns with Wikipedia's guidelines, you'll have the option to create a draft and submit it for review through the Articles for Creation project. The members of this project are experienced editors; however, due to high demand, there may be a waiting period before your draft is reviewed.
Once you submit your draft, it will be placed in a category open for review by any submission reviewer. Approval may take over a month due to the current backlog. If your submission is accepted, an editor will approve it, and you'll be notified once the article is created. If your submission isn't accepted, feedback will be provided on the page, detailing areas for improvement. You'll receive a notification via a message on your "Talk" page regarding this feedback. I hope this helps. – DreamRimmer (talk) 14:07, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I also recommend that you read WP:BOSS, and probably show it to your clients. ColinFine (talk) 17:00, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If the company meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability", then there is lots more information for you at Help:Your first article. GoingBatty (talk) 21:21, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown: It's similar to Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2023 November 27#"Forum" or "forum"? If it's used as a general noun for the type of structure then it's lowercase. If it's used as the proper name of a specific structure like Propylaea (Munich) or Propylaia (Acropolis of Athens) then it's uppercase. There may be sentences where both interpretations are possible. Grandmother[edit]

Dear team,

My grandmother, Dorothea Livio, unfortunately passed away recently. She was a famous Jewish singer from Romania living in Israel.

There are already two exisiting pages of her, one in Romanian and one in Hebrew (included below for your reference).

Now I would also like to add an English version, however, as I am new to wikipedia I am not sure whether I should make an entire new page, of if I can somehow recylce the Romanian of Hebrew page and only provide a translation.

Many thanks in advance for you help and consideration.

Romanian link: ro:Dorothea Livio

Hebrew link: he:דורותיאה ליביו Noamcosla (talk) 19:39, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am sorry for your loss. You may first wish to examine the notability criteria for musicians to see if your grandmother meets at least one aspect of them. This may be different thant the Romanian or Hebrew Wikipedias, as each Wikipedia is a separate project, with its own editors and policies. An article about her may be acceptable on those versions, but not necessarily acceptable here. 331dot (talk) 19:43, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Noamcosla. I have read machine translated versions of both articles since I do not speak either Romanian or Hebrew. Your grandmother had a long and interesting life. The shortcoming of those articles is that they are poorly referenced by the standards of the English Wikipedia. You would need to create references to independent, reliable published sources that devote significant coverage to her life. Staff written obituaries are OK, but family written obituaries aren't. The coverage could be in Romanian, Hebrew, English or any other language. Please read WP:TRANSLATE for other important information. Cullen328 (talk) 20:01, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Proper Reference Edits for wikipedia page[edit]

Hello, I saw that Wikishovel redid full official references properly cited at Ryan Shore's wikipedia page. Is it possible to know the reason why and how it should be properly formatted so the information can be input correctly and not be deleted? Sources are official. 24.205.151.184 (talk) 21:28, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, but start at WP:REFB for how to do references. If Wikishovel is user generated content, then it is not a reliable source. RudolfRed (talk) 21:34, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikishovel is a wikipedia user/bot. I just don't exactly know what it saw wrong in the formatting that ended up deleting some edits, because most are there. 24.205.151.184 (talk) 21:36, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion request on The Ambassadors (Holbein)[edit]

Hi there

I added an image to The Ambassadors (Holbein) being File:Holbein-tube.png. There is an image deletion request on it which I have added a dispute to, following the instructions in the notice, on the file page and talk page. However, the notice at The Ambassadors (Holbein) states that "This file has an invalid non-free use claim and may be deleted after Friday, 12 January 2024". How do I ensure this does not happen while the fair use issue is debated and resolved? Jim Killock (talk) 21:35, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Jim Killock I would suggest asking this at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions as they will know more about the process. I see you asked a question there yesterday. TSventon (talk) 21:52, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Name change suggestion[edit]

Wouldn't Mable E. Buland Campbell be better off as simply Mable Campbell? There are no other similar names. 65.88.88.56 (talk) 22:42, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder. The article says little about her, but mostly refers to her as Mable E. Buland, merely mentioning at the end that she married some fellow named Campbell. This suggests to me that "Mable Buland" would be a better choice. The WikiProject perhaps most likely to be interested is Women's History; you might raise the matter at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women's History. -- Hoary (talk) 23:26, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:COMMONNAME. Since she is referred to as "Buland" through most of the article, it may be that "Mabel Buland" would be a better title. But it depends how the sources refer to her. ColinFine (talk) 23:27, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
