October 27[edit]

In the "charity work section of this page - the word soirees - toward the end of the text - should have an accent on the first "e" letter. Also could you please link the word soirees directly to the sub-section titled "Soirees" on the Party link itself - I cannot do this. at all. Thanks 115.70.23.77 (talk) 00:32, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! I have confidence that you can do this! Here's how:
  1. Go to Party#Soirées and copy the "é" character.
  2. Go to Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood, click Edit, and paste the "é" character in the appropriate place.
  3. Now that you have the word "soirées" in the article, create a link to soirées. I changed that page so it will redirect to Party#Soirées for you.
Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:01, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I did it! Thanks 115.70.23.77 (talk) 01:23, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you did - congratulations! I see you created a piped link [[Party#Soirées|soirées]]. You could have also used the simpler [[soirées]] to achieve the same thing, since soirées now links to Party#Soirées. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:37, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please check these very Red. references. and fix if able - numbers 39, 40, 42, 113 and 123. Thanks - it iOS not good to see red print is it? 115.70.23.77 (talk) 01:41, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again! Bettydaisies recently removed some named references from the article in this edit, which caused these errors. I hope the two of you can discuss these edits on the article talk page and come to a consensus on what should be included in the article. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:49, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I believe the orphaned refs (sorry about that!) have been fixed by AnomieBOT.--Bettydaisies (talk) 05:40, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I can not introduce a new topic of discussion[edit]

I added a discussion topic to the Wikipedia entry "Gray code" but I do not see it -I have put my signature. Here is the title and text of the discussion I suggested:

Subject: Two new methods for converting integers to Gray code

I want to suggest two new methods for converting integers to Gray code.

The first method is very simple and has a trivial proof:

My method for converting an integer to Gray code (bin) uses successive divisions by powers of 2 and looks at the parity of the rounded quotient. eg:

29/2=14.5~15 1 29/4=7.3~7 1 29/8=3.6~4 0 29/16=1.8~2 0 29/32=0.9~1 1

The decimal value 29 has the binary value 10011 in Gray code.

The second method allows you to convert all numbers that have the same number of digits in the binary system to Gray code without any calculation. The interesting thing about this method is that the conversion is achieved through the Thue Morse sequence. As far as I know, no such close association of the Gray code with the Thue Morse sequence has been found so far. This method is described in the following link together with the proof of Max Alekseyev.

@George Plousos: This section is the only edit you have made to the English Wikipedia while logged in with this user name. Where did you attempt to add something? -Arch dude (talk) 02:49, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@George Plousos: This may run against the rule of no original research. See WP:OR. If you can find the information you want to add in a published reliable source, then you can discuss the addition on the article's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 02:50, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No. This is an encyclopedia, it's not a repository for pedagogic material. If you're concerned with tertiary education, you might take a look at Wikiversity. -- Hoary (talk) 07:22, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I create an Article for the first Indian off-road film which is well-sourced and completed and ready to release on December 10. A user redirected it to draft and said it is WP:TOOSOON. I do not think that the article falls WP:TOOSOON. As per TOO SOON, A film could merit an article if it meets either WP:Notability (film) or WP:GNG, and the Article just need to meet one of them otherwise it could be on WP:TOOSOON. This is the first Indian multilingual off-road race film and I believe that there is a scope for WP:FILMS Project. The article is well-sourced from reliable sources such as National media also the film is completed and confirmed the release on 10 December also the release date confirmation is sourced. Somebody from Wikipedia told me earlier on live chat that a film which is not been released yet but if its release is confirmed and sourced may have an article and also there are so many upcoming film articles are on Wikipedia. I researched the film, Muddy, before I create the article. I didn't expect an Afc redirect. What else should I include in the article to get published, or the article is currently eligible for mainspace? Kindly do the needful Onmyway22 (talk) 07:59, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Onmyway22 It is too soon because the film is not released yet, and you have not demonstrated that the mere production of the film is notable. The sources that you offered are no different from other unreleased films.
An example of an unreleased film that merits an article is Rust (upcoming film) and that is because of an incident that resulted in a death during production. 331dot (talk) 08:20, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Are we talking about Draft:Muddy (film)? I'd suggest this wasn't all that far from meeting WP:GNG with the references provided. It's a little odd to not have an article because it hasn't been released yet. It does seem to have plenty of coverage, it would just be if this was simply routine coverage. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 09:53, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Lee Vilenski and 331dot: I feel so happy to see the way you both responded to my query. I got your points and as per your suggestions I developed production and submitted the draft for review. Could u please check the draft Draft: Muddy (film) and update me if anything I had missed or I could include. Thanks again!! Onmyway22 (talk) 14:38, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How can I auto-archive my bookmarks for future wiki references?[edit]

I have a thousand bookmarks that r educational. I want to archive them to archive org and archive is. Is there any automated and easy way to archive my bm to these sites? --203.87.156.109 (talk) 09:01, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is a Help Desk for asking questions about Wikipedia, which doesn't seem relevant to what you want. The archive sites scrape data from existing web locations, and are not interested in individual's bookmarks, however useful these may be to you personally. Why don't you just copy them to personal cloud storage (free from several suppliers), which will automatically synchronise them with a local folder of your choice? Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:24, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think 203 is asking about saving their bookmarks as such, but instead about making sure the locations pointed to by these bookmarks are archived by archive sites, so they can be used on Wikipedia in future, even if the original sites go down. I don't know about a tool that could help with that, though. If this section gets archived without a proper answer, I recommend trying WP:VPT next. – Rummskartoffel 15:15, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There is advice at Help:Archiving a source. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:16, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Rummskartoffel. The bot documented here on meta can do this. The user would need to save the links as cited web references on a page such as a sandbox and then invoke the bot (which I think can only be done by creating an account at Toolforge). The page to "analyse" would be "User:USERNAME/sandbox and beware that this should be done cautiously as it can use lots of server resource. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:28, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Right, IABot should be able to do this. In that case, the only thing left to do is to get all of the URLs from the bookmarks in question. How that's done is going to depend on the browser 203 is using. – Rummskartoffel 17:10, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@GregHannigan If you pass Wikipedia:Notability (people) or yoiur business passes WP:CORP then it is likely that someone will write a page about you or it one day. If you believe that Wikipedia will enhance your personal or corporate reputation please think again. Wikipedia adds no value to you. You must add value to Wikipedia. Passing WP:BIO or WP:CORP does that.
Being proud of one's achievements is fine. I am proud of mine. But I do not have a Wikipedia page and I do not meet the criteria to have one written about me FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 12:50, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Help for inclusion on a Wikipedia page for a, 'Lists of Songs About Elvis Presley'.[edit]

I wrote, recorded, and released a song titled "The Ballad of the Blue Suede Cafe". It was intended as a tribute/fantasy to and about Elvis Presley, with references that don't actually mention the name ('Elvis Presley'), but when the lyrics are heard, it becomes obvious that the person in the song, is Elvis Presley, beginning with the title. (The Ballad of the Blue Suede Cafe). It has been published and released on, Youtube, and CDBaby. Does this information qualify and allow it to be added to the Wikipedia list of songs about Elvis Presley? if so, how do I proceed to have it added? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Surayabay (talkcontribs) 18:07, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Surayabay: Hi there! Unfortunately, there is no criteria defined at List of songs about or referencing Elvis Presley. Since you have a conflict of interest, you should not add your song to the list. Feel free to mention the song on the article's talk page - Talk:List of songs about or referencing Elvis Presley - along with the {{request edit}} template and a independent reliable source. You could also use the Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard. GoingBatty (talk) 19:39, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
A niggling point if I may (or even if not). You say there is no criteria. In fact, there can never be a criteria--by definition. There might be a criterion, or there might be two or three or a million or two criteria. Uporządnicki (talk) 16:37, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Uporządnicki: Feel free to update Wikipedia:Stand-alone lists appropriately. GoingBatty (talk) 16:41, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I just went over that page and did a search for the word "criter". Every instance there seems to be correct. Uporządnicki (talk) 16:49, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Surayabay. I Googled "The Ballad of the Blue Suede Cafe" using several additional search terms and I was able to verify that the song exists and was released about ten years ago. But I was not able to find any independent evidence that the song charted or that any professional reviewer has discussed it or that it has any cover versions or that it was used in any movies or TV shows or that there is anything about this song that justifies mentioning it on Wikipedia. But it is possible that I may have missed something. If so, provide a link. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:50, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The list article in question is definitely about a notable topic but it has a serious problem in that only a small percentage of the list entries have references to reliable sources that verify that the song in question really belongs on the list. I tried to improve the list by adding the song "Baby Boom Che" by John Trudell, and also adding a reliable source to verify that this particular song belongs on that list. This particular list article is a good example of they type of article that a new Wikipedia editor could improve dramatically with a little bit of effort, learning a lot about referencing in the process. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:04, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
One thing you should note about that stand-alone list page, Surayabay is that it doesn't contain red links. That means that every entry has some other Wikipedia article about the listed songs or their singer/composer. This is in line with WP:Standalone, which suggests that such lists should only contain entries which are already shown to be notable by our somewhat strict definition. Thus to proceed you might think of drafting an article The Ballad of the Blue Suede Cafe but beware that if what Cullen328 has said is correct, it is unlikely you will succeed in getting it accepted. I don't want to put you off completely but adding information to articles here that are already noteworthy but could do with extra references is likely to be a more rewarding task. Help recovering a deleted page[edit]

Hi there,

I am reaching out on behalf of my employer to try and recover his personal page which was deleted. Apologies in advance that I do not have a ton of specific information on the page itself or why it was deleted. He said that he's unsure who created the page and that recently all the content on the page was randomly deleted and it now redirects to his band page.

Here's the link to the page: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Britton_Rice&redirect=no

Any insight would be incredibly helpful. Thank you in advance!

It was not deleted, just redirected to another page. You can see how it looked before the redirect at [1]. If you are going to be editing, you need to follow WP:COI and WP:PAID RudolfRed (talk) 19:33, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The redirection was correct. There was nothing to indicate notability. Mjroots (talk) 07:48, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Payments and support[edit]

It's that time again and you're asking for financial support. Happy to offer this and I have given it quite a few times now but is there no way to put things on a regular basis and in such a way as to turn off requests for further payments? You say most people turn away but the shouty reminders kind of put one off when one has already given. Kind regards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.26.170.251 (talk) 20:42, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia does not know that the person sitting at your computer at any given time has seen a donation message. You can turn them off if you create an account. 331dot (talk) 20:45, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there! Although https://donate.wikimedia.org/ does have an option to "Give Monthly", this won't the requests from being displayed. French language assistance on Julian Assange?[edit]

We have had a here about Julian Assange. The source we are using is a letter by Assange in French. English-language sources that I've seen report Assange as saying he had a "child" in France without specifying the child's sex, with the except of the RFI source which says "son". Could I request an editor who is fluent in the French language to clarify if the the letter is sex-specific? Thank you.--Jack Upland (talk) 23:40, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it is. It refers to his children (gender and number unspecified), and to Assange's youngest child being male. The "Mon" in "Mon plus jeune enfant et sa mère sont français." indicates that the child is male). Meters (talk) 23:51, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. But if he was saying "my child" rather than "my son", wouldn't he also say "mon enfant"?--Jack Upland (talk) 00:15, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm... you are correct. My apologies. If he had wished to make it clear that he was referring to his daughter he would have said "ma enfante", but "mon enfant" could be be used for either "my son" or the generic "my child". One of those cases where we cannot be certain which way it was intended. It's analogous to the problem of translating an English "you" to a French "tu" or "vous". I didn't notice anything in that letter that definitively gave the gender of any of his children. Since we cannot be certain which usage the original French letter meant I would say that any English translation of the above sentence that gives a gender should not be considered to be reliable. Meters (talk) 01:29, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Rustier than I thought... too many decades since I wrote much French. Unlikely to see enfante used, and it would likely be "mon" rather then "ma" regardless of gender because of the initial e, but the point remains the same: the full phrase "Mon plus jeune enfant" is either a genderless reference or a male child, and no English translation that claims that it must be a son is valid. I suppose "Ma plus jeune" would indicate a girl, but he certainly did not use "Mon fils" (my son) or "Ma fille" (my daughter). Meters (talk) 02:51, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
