Analysis vs evidence

Regarding this comment: in my view, things that happened are evidence; explanation of context is analysis. I realize, though, that many submitters of evidence don't make a clear distinction, and much analysis does get submitted as evidence. As you have already commented on the subject at hand in the workshop, do you think you need to expand more on this? Hey, Isaacl. Yeah, I know the comments are already at workshop, but IMO workshop is just a way for ArbCom to divert all the squabbling. Are they even required to read that stuff? Valereee (talk) 21:20, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
Depends what you mean by "required". As I recall an arbitrator saying somewhat recently, typically the drafting arbitrators read everything. Other arbitrators may read less and follow up less with the submitted diffs, based on time and interest. Personally I feel that sober, undramatic analysis will likely be read. I don't think the probability is altered by being submitted on the evidence page. It would probably help to be placed in a separate section than within a discussion thread. isaacl (talk) 22:14, 5 August 2023 (UTC)

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

TLC RfA

Just out of curiosity, why did you delete my comment, and what part of what I wrote was a personal attack, and how was it "trolling?" I indicated that person appeared to me to be doing it intentionally to disrupt the RfA (i.e., not to stop the snowball pass, but to get the other editors all amped up just to watch the chaos). And I suggested to not encourage this kind of behavior by feeding into it. It's me... Sallicio! 15:13, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Hey, @Sallicio. Calling someone a troll is a personal attack. And your comment in a fresh section entitled "Mission complete" seemed to be just as likely to stir things up as the oppose did, which is why to me it looked like trolling.
Honestly your new comment, I'm going to just leave there as you seem to be really intent on making a comment, but it feels like you're saying, "This person intended to troll us and succeeded! So let's not feed the trolls!" Which kind of looks like continued feeding, if that oppose was intentional trolling. Valereee (talk) 15:32, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
The thing is, we all know what's going on with the guy. An elementary knowledge of what RfAs are about, and a two-second search on this guy will tell you what his motives are. But even with that, everyone has a right to an opinion, short of actual personal attacks or patent nonsense. And when you said "This person intended to troll us and succeeded! So let's not feed the trolls," that's exactly what I was saying. And they did succeed, but the intent of what I wrote was two-fold: 1) to let the opposer know we know what's going on and to knock it off, and 2) (and more importantly) to encourage the peanut gallery to put their peanuts back in their pockets because they are just encouraging this kind of non-productive behavior. If someone is acting troll-ish, calling them out is not a personal attack. And discouraging others from feeding into the nonsense is not feeding the trolls. I put it in another subsection as a kind-of "alright, enough's enough... this is the end of the feeding frenzy." And TBH, others before me called the person a troll; they just used euphemisms. So I reworded my original comment so the opposer wouldn't be offended, and for clarification. I'll be more judicious next time. It's me... Sallicio! 16:11, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

It's fine to say behavior is or seems like trolling. That's describing behavior. It's not fine to call a person a troll. That's a personal attack. You can say "your assertion is not true." Saying "you're a liar" is a personal attack. Valereee (talk) 16:18, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
The trolling was very apparent wayyy before I made a comment. lol. When I said he succeeded at trolling, that was aimed more at the peanut gallery to let them know they fed into the nonsense. Almost like "damn, look at all this back-and-forth.. we did feed right into that." But I do understand what you're trying to say, that's why I said I would be more judicious in the future. Determining cohort year for administrators

Regarding ths comment: out of curiosity, once upon a time I had started collecting some stats on when administrators passed various edits per year thresholds. Partway through I also started looking at a proxy for discussion-related edits per year. I think some combination of passing thresholds in either of these categories might serve as a first approximation of when an editor has reached a baseline level of engagement with the community. However, I think given the sharp dropoff in editors receiving administrative privileges, this analysis is only going to alter the numbers slightly—since 2014, no more than 22 editors have become admins in any given year, compared with no fewer than 121 in 2009 and earlier. isaacl (talk) 17:14, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Oh, definitely. There's no question that there are fewer RfAs in any given year. It's just that we're at a point where the sample size is so small, counting someone as class of X starts to look like it's important, when it may not be.
One of the other things WSC and I discussed was the fact that in, for example 2005, it would have been actually impossible to have a account creation>RfA gap of more than four years. In 2023, it could be 20 years. Valereee (talk) 17:23, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
Yes, over time the numbers for recent cohort years are subject to rising upward. While I still think the cohort numbers would be interesting, I didn't continue with collecting stats as I didn't think it would add much to the conversation regarding the need to have a healthy inflow of new admins, and would just distract people into arguing over the threshold criteria. isaacl (talk) 17:28, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Women in Green GA Editathon October 2023 - Around the World in 31 Days

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 26 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 27 September. It will be on all wikis from 28 September (calendar).
  • The ResourceLoader mediawiki.ui modules are now deprecated as part of the move to Vue.js and Codex. There is a guide for migrating from MediaWiki UI to Codex for any tools that use it. More details are available in the task and your questions are welcome there.
  • Gadget definitions will have a new "namespaces" option. The option takes a list of namespace IDs. Gadgets that use this option will only load on pages in the given namespaces.

Future changes

  • New variables will be added to AbuseFilter: global_account_groups and global_account_editcount. They are available only when an account is being created. You can use them to prevent blocking automatic creation of accounts when users with many edits elsewhere visit your wiki for the first time. [7][8]

I'm not too familiar with alt accounts. Is it correct that as long as it is declared and both accounts don't edit the same article, then it is OK? Yeah, it's a bit of an overreaction on their part to make a WP:fresh start after 135 edits and three complaints on their talk, but as long as they actually abandon the old account -- and as you say, don't edit the same articles or discussions -- it's fine. I see you are active right now on the project so I have a request. Could you review and, hopefully, delete Coca Vango? I handle a lot of PROD'd articles but I tagged this one so it is not appropriate for me to delete it and none of the other admins who regularly patrol Proposed Deletions seems to be active lately.
