Thanks for all the help

You have been visited by the squirrel of picking up slack
Thanks for all the help picking up my slack recently. I appreciate you swooping in to take care of things I can't find the time for. I'm naming one of my new light fixtures after you, the one in the music studio, because you're cooler than a hallway. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 20:00, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

April 2023

Hi. Following our previous discussion, I'm letting you know here (rather than templating the editor again) that Simoooix.haddi is at it again (having reverted an edit by an uninvolved editor who actually took the time to read the source and whom they drove up the all simply because they don't agree with them), they have now reverted my edit simply because I didn't respond fast enough, despite the fact that I highlighted their misunderstanding on the talk page (how dare I do anything else when they're waiting for a reply that they will reject as POV, OR or whatever else they can think of to start again?).

Given the hostile attitude and the continued harassment (see this comment in a discussion that doesn't involve them), I won't interact with them until you've had a chance to look into this, though I would completely understand if you don't (no explanation or response necessary). Best, M.Bitton (talk) 00:08, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Unblock request

Dear Valereee,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to request an unblock from the editing restrictions that have been placed on my account. I understand that my recent edits to the articles related to Arudj Barbarossa's conquests in North Africa, specifically changing "Algerian victory" to "Ottoman victory", were considered as POV pushing and edit-warring and resulted in my block. However, I would like to provide some additional information for your consideration.

The reason I made those edits was because "Algerian victory" seemed anachronistic and not historically accurate. I believed that "Ottoman victory" was a more appropriate and accurate term to use. When M.Bitton reverted my edits without providing any explanation, I re-reverted them back.

I understand that this may have appeared as edit-warring, and I apologize for any disruption caused. However, after further discussion with M.Bitton on the talk page of the "Expedition to the Moulouya" article, we were able to establish consensus and come to an agreement on the appropriate term to use. I believe that the issue has been resolved through discussion and consensus-building, and I am committed to following Wikipedia's guidelines and policies moving forward.

I have learned from this experience and I am willing to engage in constructive discussions and seek consensus with other editors in the future, rather than engaging in edit-warring. I request that you kindly reconsider the block on my account and allow me to resume editing in a collaborative manner. I am committed to contributing positively to the community and improving the accuracy and quality of articles on Wikipedia.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely, SimoooIX (talk) 20:41, 10 April 2023 (UTC)

"I dunno...it's thin."

Can you (or any talk page stalkers) help with this? I declined an A7 tag, thinking an expansion would be roughly like Kattenstoet and hence take about an hour or so. But I'm struggling to hit 1KB of prose, and all the sources I've found just say it's a festival, it's popular, it's in Lucerne, it's got cheese, and that's about it. The trouble I've always found with food and drink articles is while they are sources, they generally don't say much, so it's hard to write an encyclopaedic article beyond a stub. Any ideas, as I think the article has probably got a treasure trove of DYK hooks in it (you can always find something amusing if cheese is involved, I reckon). Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:09, 10 April 2023 (UTC)

Hm, yes, and this one's only been going on since 2001. That definitely makes it harder. I only found one mention at Google books, and it's a bare mention in a 2015 Portuguese cookbook. I'll take a look! Valereee (talk) 11:16, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
I did find one more source, but really none of these seem to be sigcov. Several have the feel of being generated from press releases. Many are simple short mentions as part of a list. I dunno...it's thin. I thought The India Times mention might be plausible claim, but then I noticed there's an Indian Mango festival included in that list, and for all we know the Indian Mango lobby paid for that article so they could be included. I would probably not vote in an AfD, as while it's looking pretty iffy, it isn't clearly non-notable. Valereee (talk) 12:01, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
At the very least, it's clearly plausible to merge and redirect to Lucerne, which I was at the point of contemplating yesterday when I wrote the above post. It's a marginal case all right. PS: Shame Levivich isn't around, I'm sure he might have something to say about the Indian Mango Lobby. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:19, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
I am going to miss his ability to basically see every point worth considering and do research at amazing speed. Maybe now that he's being marketed as ChatGPT, he's just too busy for us here. Valereee (talk) 12:30, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
Oh, yes, and def at minimum merge/redirect. It could become clearly notable. Valereee (talk) 12:31, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
We definitely need a "This user misses Levivich" userbox. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:37, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
Actually I wonder if those actually discourage people from returning. Valereee (talk) 13:06, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
I don't know if you remember, but I "quit" in August 2019, and had no intention of coming back, and it was only because a LOT of people asked me to come back AND the off-wiki issues I had vanished AND I inadvertently looked at an article that I thought needed a fix, and got suckered back again. So while I don't like looking like I did a "diva quit", the "come back!" messages did have some effect (though they weren't the full story). I am pretty sure RexxS is back and posting regularly as an IP, and he's far from the only "retired" editor who's come back and contributed to mainspace anonymously. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:41, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
I do remember, and I was very glad to see you come back. I just worry about the line between 'I miss you' and 'hey, we really need you,' if you see what I mean. I want people to come back because they want to, and to know they're very welcome when they do. :) I certainly hope Levivich will find after some time off that they're actually interested again. Valereee (talk) 15:47, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

Case that might need admin attention

I am coming to your talk page to raise this issue, since you are the latest admin to have warned user Pixius for disruptive behaviour. There you gave them a "final warning" template after a complaint made about them at ANI/I from another editor. Pixius pinged me today in a discussion that ended a year ago and was looked at at the time by 2 admins. Pixius pinged me to tell me that I have "bias" and that I am "NOTHERE" [1]. If I had bias those 2 admins would have intervened against me at the time; instead one of them protected the article after some new accounts and IPs tried to remove the well-sourced content Pixius is now opposing. I see those claims made today by Pixius as unconstructive. Especially the NOTHERE part, given that I am a long-term editor with years of experience. Pixius also pinged another editor [2] and claimed that the content Pixius opposes has only one source, but as you can see in the article, it has 9 sources. Pixius also referred to the content, which is sourced to reputable Western academic publishers, as an ""auchtotonos" chauvinist flag". I think that after a "final warning" given a month ago, personal attacks and such disregard for reliable sources and WP:RS need admin attention. Ktrimi991 (talk) 11:32, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

Hey, @Ktrimi991. What I'm seeing in just those two diffs doesn't on first glance seem to be rising to the level of disruptive editing or bludgeoning or other behavioral issues. To me it looks like a content dispute among three editors?
If you and second editor both believe certain content needs to be included/excluded, and a third editor is continuing to argue, it's acceptable for you to simply declare it consensus against the third editor's opinion, edit the article in compliance with that consensus, and stop responding to the third editor. It is not required that you continue to argue to convince the third editor for as long as they want to argue. If the third editor then edits the disputed content back in or out, that's where it becomes a behavioral problem of editing against consensus.
Does that get at what you're saying here? Valereee (talk) 11:56, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. I see your point, but telling a long-term editor they are "NOTHERE", and claiming that the content that has 9 reliable sources has only one source and that is a "chauvinist flag" do not seem to me to be things acceptable in a constructive discussion. Especially given the history of past disruption and warnings. Anyways, as an admin is up to you to decide if you should intervene or not. Cheers, Ktrimi991 (talk) 12:04, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
The issue with the NOTHERE is that they were responding to the (conveniently) description and the scare quotes around "discovery". One being kind of snarky, the other taking the bait and stepping over the line into not AGF. And honestly I don't actually understand what I would not comment the free interpretation of the newspapers and your statement of the "so called Greater Albania" as Albanians themself have are of Niš on the "auchtotonos" chauvinist flag means. Valereee (talk) 12:44, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
I've mentioned it to them. Valereee (talk) 12:47, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. I put scare quotes because I was citing other people's words. "Conveniently" was what the editor who had opened the thread had used in their descrption of a source. "Discovery" is how the author of that source describes his own claim. Even if my comment was wrong, responding to it with NOTHERE accusations a year after the discussion ended is pointless and unhelpful. The I would not comment the free interpretation of the newspapers and your statement of the "so called Greater Albania" as Albanians themself have are of Niš on the "auchtotonos" chauvinist flag comment claims that the theory supported by 9 Western academic sources is an Albanian nationalistic claim. Such claims are common in the Balkans topic area, unfortunately. Ktrimi991 (talk) 13:05, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

For me it's not a concern, unless there's something I'm not noticing? Valereee (talk) 16:19, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

possible concern

I noticed a lot of edits on multiple articles 1 2 3 4 that I patrol, all related to Gun politics in the United States by user MagicatthemovieS where they remove the link to the category and claim it is "redundant" without gaining consensus first. After I made some reverts I started a discussion on their talk page to notify them of my concern. When I checked their list of contributions I noticed they've been doing this on multiple articles, all with the same edit summary "I removed a redundant category" and seemingly no consensus on the talk pages first. Perhaps this is normal and nothing to worry about, but I am concerned, so I decided I wanted to notify an admin just in case. No offense intended to MagicatthemovieS. DN (talk) 17:24, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Hi DN. Magic does a lot of category work, and is familiar with the guidance at WP:CATSPECIFIC. For example, the first diff you linked was sensible because Universal background check is in Category:United States federal firearms legislation, which is a subcategory of Category:Gun politics in the United States. Magic is right that presence in the subcategory is sufficient, and that the overarching parent category is redundant. I would say in general that these sorts of edits have project-wide consensus behind them already. Since WP:CAT is just a guideline, there may sometimes be valid exceptions, and I'm guessing Magic would be open to a discussion about one if you brought them a reason. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 17:38, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you Firefangledfeathers, and apologies to MagicatthemovieS if that is indeed the case. Please let me know if I should then undo my reverts noted above. DN (talk) 17:54, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
Yes. Bonus points if you spot the additional redundant category at Firearm Owners Protection Act. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 18:04, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi there. I saw you added a notability tag to this article. While I agree it's not up to snuff in terms of WP:GNG, but doesn't being the Vice Chancellor at SGT University qualify him through WP:NSCHOLAR? Onel5969 TT me 17:57, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

It was a sock creation, and the sources seem to be crap. Do any of them even say that he was Vice Chancellor? The article says he held that office for a few months. I dunno. It all just seems very iffy to me. Valereee (talk) 18:09, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
The one does refer to his short stint as vice-chancellor, but it is self-bio. Hadn't realized it was a sock. Onel5969 TT me 18:56, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, there's a been quite a bit of socking, as far as I can tell. Valereee (talk) 19:08, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

FYI about Putinstalin

I bet you thought we were all done with Putinstalin, but no; my two-week block broke your indefinite partial block, as they do. I have now reinstated the partial, but not before they took the opportunity to edit some articles. (I'm not suggesting any sanctions for that; I don't think they ever understood the situation, and my slowness in taking care of the partial was hardly their fault.) Bishonen | tålk 21:30, 19 April 2023 (UTC).

I'd go take a run through edits over the period of the block in the subject area of interest but it sounds too daunting on only a half cup of coffee. Maybe I'll feel more energetic later. Or maybe the whole corporate conglomerate just needs semi'd lol... Valereee (talk) 10:38, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Something new

Hi. Since you seem very keen and knowledgeable. On the article Lanemark F.C. under the players headings it tells people to go to a category. I have never seen that before. Shouldn’t that be a list of the players at that time? Also there is a section called sources (not formatted should I format that or add it under references? Thank you. ThatFungi (talk) 12:25, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

I'm afraid I know very little about how sports articles are generally formatted. It looks like the category was added in here by GiantSnowman and the 'sources' here by @Jmorrison230582. Valereee (talk) 13:42, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Fix ping @GiantSnowman Valereee (talk) 14:00, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

No worries. Typically I see a list of players and according to research they should have 35 players which that cat doesn’t have. I cleaned it up somewhat to what I can do. Thank you for your assistance. ThatFungi (talk) 13:59, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
@ThatFungi, a category for a sports team needs 35 entries? That's a new one on me, where's that from? Valereee (talk) 14:03, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
Sorry you mis-understood. The team itself is supposed to have 35 players. Not the category. Apologies for that. ThatFungi (talk) 14:12, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
Oh, that club went through several formations, finally giving up altogether over a hundred years ago, there probably aren't sources available that cover all the players. It would be surprising if they ever had a roster of 35, a lot of 19th-century sports teams would never have maxed out. I suspect a lot of them had to occasionally pull players out of the stands to field a team. Valereee (talk) 14:20, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
Players or spectators like in Roman times buy a fit looking person and through him in the arena? I doubt they did too. I can’t find anything on it or many of the players although I suspect someone in that area can visit a local library and look at some version of a “newspaper” to find out. Lol. ThatFungi (talk) 14:39, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
Listing players is problematic - how do you decide who to include and who to exclude, without infringing WP:POV? If there is an official sources that e.g. lists a Hall of Fame/'the club's 100 top players' then that is fine. GiantSnowman 18:08, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman To me it would be pretty simple perhaps similar to a cast of a movie or tv show. The main point was I’ve never seen any article say refer to a category to see the list. If that were true, wouldn’t we see that on movie and tv shows under the heading of cast “see category cast of ……?” don’t see it as a POV. I was mainly wondering as it was a very, very old team (as Velereee stated above). ThatFungi (talk) 19:56, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

French dish names

Hi Valereee! I'm finally coming back to writing food articles. Got one question: Are French dish names (eg. fr:Civet de lièvre) in general supposed to be translated into English on the English Wikipedia? Or just written as is in French? BorgQueen (talk) 20:53, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

Hm. Interesting question. I think it might be something I've been playing by ear -- I search for an English term (partially to make sure it doesn't already have an article, but also to see if there's an English term in general use), and if there isn't one, I use the term in the other language. By which possibly idiosyncratic method Pot de creme would be an article and pommes frites a redirect, and they are. But I'm not actually sure I've ever seen policy on this.
For Hare stew we have a redirect to Rabbit stew, but this dish isn't even mentioned there except to mention that in France there's a dish called jugged hare. Jugged hare redirects to jugging, which does mention civet de lièvre as a similar dish. I would create at Civet de lièvre and turn Hare stew into a dab. Valereee (talk) 09:52, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

Is this redirect reasonable? I stumbled across it while clearing Category:Miscellaneous redirects; the term is never mentioned in the article, and a google search in quotation marks only pulls up net worth/biography sites reporting a name change that is nowhere else in google search results; I managed to find the original source where the name change was originally reported, and it's unclear whether it supports this name or the name it eventually rebranded to (Parker Law Group).

I guess I'm wondering if this should be taken to RFD or not. You're the creator, so I figured I'd ask you your thoughts on it first. Skarmory (talk • contribs) 08:46, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

Hey, @Skarmory! I think it was an interim name. I don't have a strong opinion either way on the redirect. Valereee (talk) 09:20, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Probably not worth sending to RFD, then, as it's a valid search term. Not sure how to categorize the redirect; I had it tagged with incorrect name, which is probably fine per "a title that is unsuitable as a Wikipedia article title" in the template's description, so I guess I'll leave it as is. Your AFD on Our Youth Social Community

Hi Valereee. You may want to self-close Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Our Youth Social Community because the author moved it back to draft space. I have create-protected the title in article space. ~Anachronist (talk) 19:31, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

Oh, thanks! Hm...when it happened that quickly, what's the best procedure? Valereee (talk) 19:35, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
If nobody has commented on it yet, you may as well delete the nomination page you created and remove the entry from the list of nominations. ~Anachronist (talk) 19:44, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

Editor conduct

Hello there. You have imposed page restrictions on Petar Atsev before due to two editors. The thing is, the behavior has continued and spilled over on other articles too. It happens pretty much every day. I was wondering if there's anything that you can do about it because this is getting out of control. StephenMacky1 (talk) 15:46, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

ANI discussion

It's not directly about the stuff going on at the Chicago CRED article but I think this discussion on ANI is relevant and the problems discussed there are showing up on Talk:Chicago CRED. Toddst1 (talk) 16:50, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
