No trouble here, :) I just always enjoy letting you know when I start a new article. *Just* getting started, by the way. Enjoy! Sinking of the Dalniy Vostok Juneau Mike (talk) 04:40, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

Mike, so sad so many died. But good article. You are certainly on top of the news! I hadn't even heard about the accident. --Rosiestep (talk) 04:46, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

Rosie I believe this just happened. Articles are starting to load up on news.google.com I have company coming over, but I will come back to this later. Have a great evening! Juneau Mike (talk) 04:48, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of George M. Ashford, and it appears to include material copied directly from http://alaskaweb.org/bios/ashfordgm.html.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

  • Hi again, CorenSearchBot, and once again, you are confused. The article I just created is from 1905 PD material, which is apparently also housed on alaskaweb.org. I used appropriate source attribution on my first edit. Please add me to your trusted editors list so this annoyance stops. Thank you. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:33, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

Women's articles

Hi Rosie, you were busy last month! I found a few sources to add to Rose Sommerfield. The Clara de Hirsch article is very important – she was very significant – but I don't know if I'll have time to polish it for submission to DYK this week, as I am busy with the Passover holiday. A new reference tool

Hello Books & Bytes subscribers. There is a new Visual Editor reference feature in development called Citoid. It is designed to "auto-fill" references using a URL or DOI. We would really appreciate you testing whether TWL partners' references work in Citoid. Sharing your results will help the developers fix bugs and improve the system. If you have a few minutes, please visit the testing page for simple instructions on how to try this new tool. Regards, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:48, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi, any chance you could translate User:Dr. Blofeld/Cortina for the forts section of the Cortina d'Ampezzo article? I think we can get it to GA, doesn't need much now, not that much about the town in sources really aside from skiing and the olympics.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:39, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 3

Greetings! For this month's issue...

We have demos!

After a lengthy research and design process, we decided for WikiProject X to focus on two things:

  • A WikiProject workflow that focuses on action items: discussions you can participate in and tasks you can perform to improve the encyclopedia; and
  • An automatically updating WikiProject directory that gives you lists of users participating in the WikiProject and editing in that subject area.

We have a live demonstration of the new WikiProject workflow at WikiProject Women in Technology, a brand new WikiProject that was set up as an adjunct to a related edit-a-thon in Washington, DC. The goal is to surface action items for editors, and we intend on doing that through automatically updated working lists. We are looking into using SuggestBot to generate lists of outstanding tasks, and we are looking into additional options for automatic worklist generation. This takes the burden off of WikiProject editors to generate these worklists, though there is also a "requests" section for Wikipedians to make individual requests. (As of writing, these automated lists are not yet live, so you will see a blank space under "edit articles" on the demo WikiProject. Sorry about that!) I invite you to check out the WikiProject and leave feedback on WikiProject X's talk page.

Once the demo is sufficiently developed, we will be working on a limited deployment on our pilot WikiProjects. We have selected five for the first round of testing based on the highest potential for impact and will scale up from there.

While a re-designed WikiProject experience is much needed, that alone isn't enough. A WikiProject isn't any good if people have no way of discovering it. This is why we are also developing an automatically updated WikiProject directory. This directory will surface project-related metrics, including a count of active WikiProject participants and of active editors in that project's subject area. The purpose of these metrics is to highlight how active the WikiProject is at the given point of time, but also to highlight that project's potential for success. The directory is not yet live but there is a demonstration featuring a sampling of WikiProjects.

Each directory entry will link to a WikiProject description page which automatically list the active WikiProject participants and subject-area article editors. This allows Wikipedians to find each other based on the areas they are interested in, and this information can be used to revive a WikiProject, start a new one, or even for some other purpose. These description pages are not online yet, but they will use this template, if you want to get a feel of what they will look like.

We need volunteers!

WikiProject X is a huge undertaking, and we need volunteers to support our efforts, including testers and coders. Check out our volunteer portal and see what you can do to help us!

As an aside...

Wouldn't it be cool if lists of requested articles could not only be integrated directly with WikiProjects, but also shared between WikiProjects? Well, we got the crazy idea of having experimental software feature Flow deployed (on a totally experimental basis) on the new Article Request Workshop, which seeks to be a place where editors can "workshop" article ideas before they get created. It uses Flow because Flow allows, essentially, section-level categorization, and in the future will allow "sections" (known as "topics" within Flow) to be included across different pages. What this means is that you have a recommendation for a new article tagged by multiple WikiProjects, allowing for the recommendation to appear on lists for each WikiProject. This will facilitate inter-WikiProject collaboration and will help to reduce duplicated work. The Article Request Workshop is not entirely ready yet due to some bugs with Flow, but we hope to integrate it into our pilot WikiProjects at some point.

CCFR photo

Hey there. Just thought you might enjoy taking 10 seconds out of your busy editing schedule to see a new photo I added today on Capital City Fire and Rescue. (just below the infobox.) I know I've been "carpet bombing" your page lately, but I've been inspired to be more active lately. :) FYI, I posted it at 300px, because below that the thumb nail starts to pixilate. Click on it for full resolution. Anyway, hope it improves the article. Juneau Mike (talk) 05:52, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Love the photo! They must be so jazzed that you've created the article and incorporated an image etc. No worries about how often you post here, Mike!! And I'm really glad you've become more active. It means I can slack off a bit. Haha! :) --Rosiestep (talk) 06:22, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
Rosie Had to make a small page move, regarding CCFR, for a small error I became aware of tonight. It's Capital City Fire/Rescue, there is a forward slash, no "and". I wrongly assumed it was conjunctive, not either/or. Not exactly a crisis, change easily made! :) minor clean ups made... Juneau Mike (talk) 08:22, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
Mike, well done! I had to deal with an article move yesterday, too: Caribbean Marine Biological Institute to Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity Foundation as pointed out on the dyk nom page by a reviewer. We were using the org's original title vs. the newer one. And as the nom was a double, I had to deal with the institute's title change on the bay's page also. Sue Gardner said in a recent interview that Wikipedians are "persnickety" -- they want to get things right -- and I would agree. BTW, I see that you've created more than 20 articles; that is really really awesome. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:12, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Jen Knox

Jen Knox does not seem unnotable. She has had articles published in the Saturday Evening Post. I don't really know how to assess an Indie writer, but she has won a lot of awards and published quite a few books. I was able to verify most of the awards listed on her web page in external sites. Am I missing something here? SusunW (talk) 06:26, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Susun: I agree with you; she does not seem unnotable. I'll start with a cleanup and let's see where that takes us. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:57, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
Thank you. At least I managed to get her relisted for another week to buy some time to work on her. SusunW (talk) 15:28, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
@SusunW: I just noticed the article was written by a paid contributor, Balaji E.M, so I'm going to stop working on it for now. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:58, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
@Rosiestep: I didn't even know that was possible. Why would someone do that? Taints everything. SusunW (talk) 19:00, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
I am sorry. Lesson learned. Check talk pages. Lots of time wasted for both of us. :( SusunW (talk) 19:08, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
Susun, that is ok. I should have checked the article history earlier myself. In the back of my mind, I had assumed it was created during a recent women's history month editathon. No worries. Now on to some Cortina landmarks! --Rosiestep (talk) 19:37, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
  • Hi E.M.Gregory and thanks for reaching out to me. I looked at the editor's history for the Nevins article, and I'm suspicious of who they are, so I'll pass on assisting with that article. Cheers, --Rosiestep (talk) 04:57, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Mike, thank you for persevering and making this happen! --Rosiestep (talk) 00:45, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

Can you tell me how to fix the date on her reference? I looked at the check date help and seen nada about month year - month year dates. She is fascinating. Ties in to two other of the bios we recently did. SusunW (talk) 01:16, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

@SusunW: Nice! The reference template doesn't accept date ranges, so I always opt for the older date of the two. --Rosiestep (talk) 01:23, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
@Rosiestep: Cool. I fixed it. Next question, why aren't red links clearing. Yesterday on my piece on David E. Williams I had to go to every page that mentioned him and re-type the name and then save to clear the red link. Had to do the same thing here with Jiménez Trava. Is this some new thing? Totally annoying if there are a lot of linked pages, as there were with Williams. Fortunately on Jiménez Trava, only 2, but still, why? SusunW (talk) 01:31, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
@SusunW: I've noticed the same thing. But if left alone, eventually they do turn blue. But I don't have a technical answer as to what's causing this. --Rosiestep (talk) 01:36, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
@Rosiestep: Good to know. OCD me, I have been retyping them all. *sigh* Thanks for the DYK clearance on the Williams piece. I guess you noticed I did the Foppa disappearance in its own section. I love that her son had that archives digitized. SusunW (talk) 01:42, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
@SusunW: Me, too. Hopefully, experts will be able to piece together the circumstances regarding her disappearance, and that of many others. --Rosiestep (talk) 01:51, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

Merge?

Surely there is a place to request such a thing, but I know not where. I stumbled upon this, Aelfleda which clearly should be redirected to this Ælfflæd of Whitby, but I don't know how to do that or request that. Help says, or at least my reading of it, that it should be merged rather than copied and pasted. How do I fix it? As always, thanks for your help. SusunW (talk) 23:56, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

@SusunW:, Agree, the former should be merged into the latter. As it appears uncontroversial to me, I've taken care of it. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:54, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Content production

Just looking through the new pages. Content production seems to be at an all time low. Just 17 articles produced between 0:00 and 1:00 and just 25 between 2:00 and 3:00 am. That's exceedingly poor seems as I used to create more than that in 10 minutes! Wikipedia goes quieter in production during our night time here. I'd be interested to see figures on the nationality of people creating new articles. It seems that extremely few Americans are creating new articles. Right now I'm feeling that stubbing needs to be done again.♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:21, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

@Dr. Blofeld: Interesting, about the quietness during those hours. I wonder if it's a fluke or a trend or common? We both know there are jillions of stubs still to create: people, locales, museums, foo production in foo country, etc. I have a whole chunk of work in Asturias which I haven't finished. And of course, Diccionario biográfico, geográfico e histórico de Venezuela sits patiently on my nightstand... all those military generals waiting for their place in history to be documented on Wikipedia. Lol. What about you? --Rosiestep (talk) 14:16, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
It seems it's a common trend, things go quiet on here in new articles around midnight GMT. And even then a lot of the new articles coming in seem to be the typical tat, you know what I mean, football seasons, crappy bands etc. Articles which are not really all that important. Given the amount of solid notable traditional articles missing from around the world there's precious few really creating the sort of articles we produce. Some days I've looked and been quite impressed with the mix coming in though, it's a very mixed bag. I think we do need editors actively stubbing articles from other wikis, even smallish stubs with just a sourced fact or two. I've been thinking about trying to breathe new life into the WP:Transwiki I started and try to get us to use more of its pages for creating missing lists. Wikipedia:WikiProject Intertranswiki/French/Buildings for instance. For Spain, feel free to list missing Asturias/Spain articles at Wikipedia:WikiProject Intertranswiki/Spanish/Buildings. Think how many missing articles there are in total!! I think it's one of the most needed projects on here if we're really to address systematic bias. Yes, the Venezuelan bios of course, I've also been meaning to resume with my Argentine cinema and film lists, just not enough time to do everything!! After I'm done with my Kubrick books I'm thinking of going back to stubbing work and keeping things as simple as possible.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:29, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
@Dr. Blofeld: WikiProject Intertranswiki is extremely important. I think the easiest way to generate the redlists is from Wikidata, such as this one for women writers, right? —Rosiestep (talk) 15:06, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
Yes, exactly like that! How did you create it?♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:13, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
Dr. Blofeld I had stumbled across Wikipedia:WikiProject Women artists/Redlinks from Wikidata during the WikiWomen's History Month blitz and posted a query about it here, after which, le voila, WPWW got its own Wikidata redlist. This section also contains instructions for how to generate the list. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:29, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
I'm lurking and couldn't agree more that more "content" articles need to be produced. I just discovered another list Wikipedia:Requested articles/Arts and entertainment/Visual arts because it popped up on my new file on Roger von Gunten. Would that the lists were in a centralized location, but it seems one must "stumble across" them. I have Watchlisted both of these. (P.S. Rosiestep, von Gunten is fascinating. The weird thing is, I cam upon him because of our piece on Jomí Garcia, but Jomí wrote about him before the whole "what defines art" situation occurred. I'm leaving it for a day to see if the redlinks to "what links here" articles go away.) SusunW (talk) 16:15, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

SusunW, that's exactly right -- there are redlists everywhere -- and you have to "stumble" across them. (I'll take a look at Gunten et al in a minute.) Dr. Blofeld, It's almost like we need WP:WikiProject Redlists, which I've had half a mind to create for a long time. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:29, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

We have WP:Missing encyclopedia articles of course, but that's usually only for covering encyclopedias with a set number of articles. I've love to see a full list of missing articles from other wikis on here. I'm not sure how much time it's worth spending on though as few people are going to help start them. It's probably best to work on a topic at a time and copy some lists from other wiki categories and go through and quickly blue link them and so on. The French chateaus one is one I'll be working on anyway. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:34, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
Yes, there is "Missing encyclopedia articles", but there are other lists of missing articles all over the place... and we've only mentioned a few of those within this section. And, of course, lots of us have sandboxes full of redlinks. People ask me all the time: "how do you figure out what to write about?" I chuckle inside before I respond, respectfully, always hoping to inspire a new Wikipedian. —Rosiestep (talk) 16:47, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
I know LOL!! So many people think wikipedia is nearing completion!!! Every article I start like that Dominican Republican writer turns up mostly red links! That's why it's so important to start them in the first place for the knock on effect of finding more missing ones! Yes, I agree, one massive neatly organized list would be ideal, although a missing from other wiki one would soon become out of date.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:56, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
"Missing from other wikis" redlists could be re-generated on a regular basis through Wikidata -- I bet a bot could do that. And store them on Wikipedia:WikiProject Intertranswiki subpages. Of course, the magnitude of bits and bytes would be enormous to infinity. Let's stick to museums and chateaus plus an abbey or two. lol —Rosiestep (talk) 17:11, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Can you find more on San Isidro, Cabañas and improve sourcing? The history needs checking I'm not completely sure if some of the territory terms have translated well. Do we keep "caseria" or change to village too in admin divisions? Not sure. I wanted to see how many red links could be found on such a place and look at all those rivers and hills!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:54, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld Not finding much on San Isidro.--Rosiestep (talk) 03:54, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

I just stumbled on another. @Dr. Blofeld: had asked me to make a list of Mexican actresses. I had no idea, so found an article that listed artists of the golden era. I culled through them and wrote an article on Anita Blanch. When I finished, I checked to make sure she wasn't an orphan and found she was linked to Wikipedia:Most-wanted articles. Totally serendipity. Thought you might want to mark this page and peruse it to see if there is anything interesting. SusunW (talk) 04:44, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

Do these have articles on Spanish wiki? If so please list them on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Intertranswiki/Spanish/Buildings page. Yup Rosie, will expand the one you mentioned shortly.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:39, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

I've done what I could but couldn't find any reliable sources to source two paragraphs. In fact I couldn't find any solid sources apart from the one you used!♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:15, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

SusunW, so cool that you've driven by them. I may have but wouldn't have known that I did... I spent almost a month in Yucatan/Quintana Roo a while back. The list of 73 is extremely interesting -- again pointing out how much is missing from Wikipedia. I will bet each of those 73 has an interesting story; and I wonder if there are RS for each. I found this government page and this Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán page, which will help in planning the hacienda project. In addition to individual hacienda articles, the project needs Henequen production in Yucatán or Henequen industry in Yucatán (es:Industria henequenera en Yucatán) and Hacienda henequenera to make sense of things. Thoughts? Also pinging Thelma who may know of some students/faculty/others who may be interested in working on this. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:53, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Dr. Blofeld "Henequen production..." or "Henequen industry..."? --Rosiestep (talk) 17:57, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Probably industry in this case, dunno.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:16, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Good job starting it. That sort of article is exactly the sort of "hidden" one I was talking about, regional case studies of industries. So valuable.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:47, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Thank you! Didn't realize it could turn out to be such a big project. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:05, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

@Rosiestep: and @Dr. Blofeld: sorry, been without power for the last 5 hours. Nothing like 100F and no air. Ugh! I had worked my preliminary way through about 2/3 of the list, so will see if I can finish it. There are a lot of them on the Spanish site. I'll post what I am finding here. Definitely industry, it was at one time this was the richest place in the Americas. Henequin, green gold. Let me get to it and keep my fingers crossed that the power stays on. I finished the article I was working on for Montenegro. There is one source that might be helpful, but I could not access it. I put it in as external links. It says it is accessible through library membership, but it did not like my US membership. Do not know if that is because my library is not part of their linked group or because I was accessing it from Mexico, even though the library is in the US. If you have time to look at the piece or can access the source, I would appreciate it. Now that I am done with it, can move on to the haciendas. SusunW (talk) 01:00, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

Wikimania talk!!!

Yep, brilliant. I have not got the travel sorted, but I'm cool with that. If we do get together a project proposal then we could add that into the proposed costs. I see the opportunity still to "do something". I have been quiet but I intend to contribute. (I gave a joint Wikimania paper in Washington on the day my daughter got married so I had to do my bit via video .... so its not the first time). At the moment my wife is standing to be an M.P. so I'm getting sucked in to that. Maybe we could have another skype but I will do some writing first. I have still been quietly chipping away at picking out the last few women from the British records of the 19th century and Lydia Sellon is one of the last ... but she's not a writer. Oh and I started Qian Xiuling which got one of the top DYK hit rates this month Victuallers (talk) 21:58, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

@Victuallers: Xiuling has an awesome life story, so cool that the article had so many hits. Let's motivate the world to write these stories. I'm at an annual national recruiters' conference, hearing about new trends in recruiting applicants. Hope I can parlay some of this into recruiting editors to work on the content gender gap. Some of the take aways from this conference, repeated over and over again: "break the rules", "stop playing it safe", "do stuff which would get you fired". Let's remember that as we plan a future with a narrowed content gender gap. --Rosiestep (talk) 22:21, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

A really hearty congratulations to both of you. Hopefully you'll inspire many people to edit. Thanks Rosie for adding some buildings to Spain to do, started the first Castillo de Alba (Quirós). Great thing about articles like is that they could potentially turn up red links on notable missing medieval feudal lords and bishops and local kings and stuff. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:48, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

Merge discussion, and Wikibreak

Two separate issues here, no cause and effect. First, there is a merge discussion going on here [6] This is the third AfD and/or merge debate and frankly it's exhausting and annoying. I personally believe the article is notable on it's own merits but clearly others believe otherwise, so lets let compromise rule the day. Even if this fails notability, which I think is highly questionable but as I said it will come up again and again, it should be merged into the correct article. I have always maintained that Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago is about a significant speech given by Barack Obama about race relations in the United States, not just about, or even primarily regarding, the Zimmerman trial - although I acknowledge the trials conclusion was the catalyst. That being said, the article should not be merged with the trial page, but if consensus agrees should be merged with Speeches of Barack Obama to convey the full historical context. If you have a few minutes I hope you will join the discussion, whether you agree or not.

On a separate issue, I have gone on a Wikibreak to deal with 2 jobs this summer, and still try to have a social life lol. It's not related to the above discussion. I regularly patrol the pages I've created, and noticed the new merge discussion as I was going into break. I'm not "disgruntled". :) While I grow weary of the endless notability discussions I see, I actually find consensus to be vital. I'm sure I'll be around here and there this summer, and will be back more fully this fall or winter. In the meantime, I hope you stay well. Juneau Mike (talk) 07:53, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

Juneau Mike I'll keep an eye on the discussion, and any others if you like while you take a wikibreak, which everyone deserves once in a while. Enjoy your time off... work, fun, or just rest and relaxation. I'll be really happy, though, when you come back. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:58, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

Agriculture in the Republic of the Congo

I was looking at Agriculture in the Republic of the Congo with a view to reviewing it for DYK. Instead I ended up expanding it, and I also created an article on the Niari Valley which was redlinked in your article. Since your proposed hook for DYK is "... that the Niari Valley is a notable agricultural area in the Republic of the Congo?", would you object to me amending the nomination to a two article hook to include my new article? Count of Miraflores

Okay, so as you know, I've been working on the haciendas. I keep running into the Count and Countess Miraflores, but not really interested in royalty, so I move on. Then today, I am looking at Itzincab Cámara. One of the things it is known for are the lauburu decorations. Those are basque, and it isn't addressed in the English Wiki, but there are pictures of Itzincab on the Spanish wiki of lots of haciendas sporting lauburu. So I think to myself, must have been someone of basque heritage who arrived early in Yucatan. I search, and find ... Around 1675 a Basque immigrant named Pedro de Garrástegui bought the post of Treasurer of the Santa Cruzada and shortly after buying that post, bought the title of Count of Miraflores, “thereby making himself and his heirs the only family of titled nobility in Yucatán.” See pg 82 A further search shows that Basque traders had a virtual monopoly on the cocoa trade from 1728 on and were doing business in Yucatán through at least the 1790s. see pages 68-71 No original research...I have nothing that says they brought the basque symbol with them, but a whole lot of haciendas here use the symbol. I don't think I can just slap the photos on the lauburu page without some explanation, but there is no explanation on the Spanish site, just the photos. Any ideas? SusunW (talk) 21:40, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

@SusunW: this is interesting. I can't see any of the pages of either book, but there has to be something about the lauburu's Yucatan connection somewhere. Any chance the Merida Univ library might have a resource, perhaps check with a librarian there. Or is there a local historical society which might have some old documents? --Rosiestep (talk) 05:16, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
@SusunW: I did a little googling regarding the lauburu/Yucatan connection and found this regarding Mucuchíes in Merida, Venezuela. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:23, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
@Rosiestep: weird, I cannot see your reference either. Even tried pasting it directly. Hmmmm. Maybe you put what you found and I put what I found and between the two we can build a basis for adding the photos? SusunW (talk) 14:36, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
@Rosiestep: and I can try the local library, but the biggest problem we will have is primary sources. I think the whole thing about only 2ndary sources is crazy. I get avoid primary sources created by the subject, but I would far rather use a primary document created by say a government, court, etc. than use a secondary source which has misreported an event simply because some other source did and once it is in print it never dies. SusunW (talk) 15:18, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
A friendly FYI, if you edit my talkpage, I will automatically get notified there's a message, so you don't have to include {{yo|Rosiestep}}. --Rosiestep (talk) 04:07, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
So, maybe we just go with something as simple as that until more is found "Though the "lauburu" is generally associated with the Basque areas of Spain, it can be found in other places where they settled, such as the areas around Mérida, Mexico and Merida, Venezuela." I can add my source about the count with photos and you can add yours about Venezuela. SusunW (talk) 12:12, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
@SusunW: At present, neither of the Merida articles mention the Basque so Basque settlement in the area would have to be substantiated. I googled Merida Venezuela Basque and this seems to substantiate Basque presence in the area. I'll search some more after work. What are you seeing? --Rosiestep (talk) 14:22, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
The article on the Count/ess of Miraflores clearly states he was basque and I have documented that family living in Teya and Chenche de las Torres but even better, I found an architect! "1560 Architect Juan de Veramendi, from Bizkaia, sees the completion of his Cathedral of Cuzco in South America. Other great Basque architects in the New World are Cristóbal de Aulestia in Méridia, Yucatán; Diego de Aguirre, Matías Maestro, Agustín de Gavira, Juan de Egoaguirre and Juan Iñigo de Eraso in Lima, Peru; Francisco de Ibarra in Callao; Miguel de Arregui in Cuzco; and Fray Mariano de Garay in Cayma. These men brought two new elements of construction to the Americas: The dome and the arch." p 25, but then a whole list of folks in Mexico from pp 103-108 and South America 110-113 So far I have found nada that mentions Cristóbal de Aulestia as an architect, but I did find an article mentioning that Pedro de Aulestia was one of the architects of the main cathedral of Mérida. [7] Aulesti basque country. SusunW (talk) 15:46, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
I don't know if I can just copy and paste this onto the hacienda page, but in the event that someone wants to follow up on the County of Miraflores or can help with the Lauburu issue, can we just copy it there? SusunW (talk) 01:24, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
@SusunW: I think the haciendas' talk page would be a good place. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:24, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
Okay, I copied it there. SusunW (talk) 05:04, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

I'm not buying that it lost 100 odd species in 5 years. What does "2 species to be interpreted" mean anyway? I think it would be best to skip this one if I'm honest.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:27, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

Wonderful, that's when wiki is at its best when you start an article like that and you get three new articles out of it, including a 1904 Ecuadorian novel! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:34, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

Very nice! Calliopejen1 and @Dr. Blofeld: the es article is named es:Casa Museo Martínez-Holguín, which matches the name used by the municipality here, albeit the government omits the hyphen. What do you think about renaming the en lang article something like Martínez-Holguín House Museum? --Rosiestep (talk) 04:01, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

Sure, go for it. I'm having one of those days though where wikipedia seems a waste of time!♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:29, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

Good work on all these articles! Re the name, either way works for me. "House Museum" just struck me as something that sounded more normal in Spanish, where a similar place would probably just be called "House" in English. (see e.g. articles in Category:Historic house museums in California and similar categories) No strong feelings. Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:21, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, Jen, I decided to move it. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:26, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
@Dr. Blofeld: and @Nvvchar: If any of these are ready for nom or close to it, can you please handle? --Rosiestep (talk) 17:20, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

I think they all would need a bit of work. Augusto Nicolás Martínez on the otherhand Nvv can nom now. Or if he expands Martínez-Holguín House a tad we could have a double hook.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:23, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

This from the State Troopers office

Hey Rosiestep and friends--this is Drmies, mobile, getting their drivers license renewed. I noticed to my dismay that Bank desert (or Banking desert) seems to go nowhere. That shouldn't be--it is a real topic, and real important. There was a story on NPR this morning and there's plenty of material on the webz. I can't create content from my phone; can someone have a go? Cullen328, are you up yet? Keep in mind that I might die in here. Thanks all!

@Drmies: I'll send the cavalry to look for you if you don't make it out of the DMV by sundown. ;) Yup, seems like a notable topic, but I'll take a closer look after work. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:01, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
@Drmies: I didn't see a white flag being hoisted up a pole so I assume you made it out of there in time for dinner. BTW, created stubby article, Banking desert; cc: Cullen328. --Rosiestep (talk) 05:54, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
What a slacker you are, Drmies, unable to create new content on your smart phone. Here I am, doing my best trying to get George Meany to GA on my Android HTC One phone (made in Taiwan) while you are sitting there at the DMV, probably ensconced on a slick fiberglass 21st century modern "helmet" chair, an Eames knockoff with no royalties paid, and complaining about your inability to edit. You sound like me two years ago. The encyclopedia needs you!! Edit productively with mobile devices!
As for the topic, I am quite familiar with "grocery deserts" and worked a quarter of a century ago in San Francisco's most minority neighborhood, where the old school chains had packed up and gone away. In marginal neighborhoods in Northern California, mini bank branches in supermarkets are sometimes the best option. As I am falling asleep, I will look more tomorrow.
As for our host, HELLO Rosiestep. You are the best of the best. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:18, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
@Drmies: so I'm waiting with baited breath... was it an orange helmet chair or an Eames knockoff? I'm putting $1.00 on the helmet chair, manufactured in Taiwan in a factory next door to the one that makes Android HTC One phones.
@Cullen328: Good call about the "grocery deserts" as I did see mention about that type of shortage while googling for banking/bank desert. I've linked Banking desert with Food desert via See also. Maybe the article should be renamed bank desert or financial desert; dunno. Omg, you create content on an Android????? #painfuljustthinkingaboutit --Rosiestep (talk) 14:05, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
I have a brand-spanking new iPhone (5 or 6, I don't know), but neither my phone nor my brain are a match for Cullen's, and that's a fact. It took over two hours but I got my license renewed, no thanks to their DOS-operated machinery. I 'preciate y'all's help here; in the meantime I transported myself overseas where it's light until 10 PM and the beer and cheese are plentiful. And the working hours severely limited. Drmies (talk) 18:43, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
@Drmies: Very cool; have fun! --Rosiestep (talk) 18:52, 17 May 2015 (UTC)

Emereo

Hi, unfortunately you're the latest in the line of experienced contributors who have fallen for the Emereo problem. They mirror our content and you've used at least one of their books (in this edit). It is pretty obviously a mirror just from the formatting of the book. Since you've made a lot of other edits to that article in quick succession, I've left it there in the hope that you can sort it out. If not then I'll just delete it. Thanks. - Sitush (talk) 12:28, 16 May 2015 (UTC)

If the "Great-Tech-Goddess-in-the-Sky" can make a program that tells you when a weblink is banned by Wikipedia, surely she or one of her other gods can make a program that won't allow Emereo as a source either???? SusunW (talk) 13:26, 16 May 2015 (UTC)

@Sitush: Arghhh, I didn't know about that one. Why didn't I get one of those automatic "Warning warning, Dr. Smith" notices before clicking Save? In the old days, that was all the alert you'd need. Anyway, I removed the Emereo ref and the content associated with it. Thanks for heads up. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:52, 16 May 2015 (UTC)

There are quite a lot of mirrors that are not on our edit filter list but I'm too thick to understand why. What I do know is that a lot of citations are added without naming the publisher, so even an edit filter is no guarantee. Emereo use some standard strings in book titles and that helps tracking them down to some degree.
Weblinks are easier to deal with because we are usually filtering entire domains and so need only search for the root of the name. And if someone doesn't even bother entering to top-level bit then the link will not work anyway. - Sitush (talk) 14:03, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
@Sitush: yeah, that makes sense. Glad I didn't spend too much time on that ref. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:07, 16 May 2015 (UTC)

Míriam Martinho

Seems like forever and a day since I have been scribbling on your page. I did Martinho, such as I could. Very few sources that are not blogs. On both the Spanish and Portugese sites the links are mostly dead and mostly blogs. I did find a US state department document where she was used as an expert witness, so I think I have notability covered even if the documentation is weak. Also noted in doing her that Rosely Roth needs work. If you can find US sources to add, please do. SusunW (talk) 22:21, 19 May 2015 (UTC)

@SusunW: I don't see that much in En language sources, but it seems like there's quite a bit in the Es language. Yes, RR definitely looks like it can be improved. --Rosiestep (talk) 04:49, 20 May 2015 (UTC)
I truly find nothing else. There were lots of books that mentioned her, no articles. But all of the books, cited her as a source. That's how I built what I have on her published works. Worldcat lists only 1 article. I got not one article from any newspaper, journal, etc. SusunW (talk) 05:02, 20 May 2015 (UTC)
Pity. We have to do better with modern-day women and get them mentioned everywhere we can so that 50-100-200 years from now, when Susuns and Rosies like you and me are writing these articles, they'll have plenty of information to write the bios about the women who were doing the important things in 2015. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:53, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

An idea for a GA nomination

Rosiestep,

Keeping in mind our previous conversation about potential future collaboration, I think I've found an interesting article relating to yesteryear Los Angeles that might interest you: the Davis Divan. I successfully passed it through DYK a few weeks ago, and I'm curious if you might have any interest in co-nominating it for GA with me. I've never successfully nominated a GA before, and I know that you've passed quite a few, so I'd love to learn from your experience and perspective during the process. If you don't have the time or the interest for this sort of project, I'll completely understand. I just thought that I'd ask. All the best!

Michael Barera (talk) 21:28, 22 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi @Michael Barera: I am so happy, actually, honored, that you stopped by with a GAN suggestion. Unfortunately, though, I know nothing about cars except how to drive them so I don't work on those sorts of articles. But don't let that deter you! When you feel the article is ready, you should nom it at GA and just go through the learning experience of having someone review the article. I think things will go pretty smoothly. Now, if you want to collaborate on an article about a building, please let me know!! I mean it. Best, --Rosiestep (talk) 03:13, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

Dennis Brown is interested in cars I believe.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:11, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

Mexican feminist authors

Thanks for translating and working on these recently. I am looking for 6 more so that we can give the lie to one of the repeated claims at WP:Wikipedia has more...

The redlinks at User:Rich Farmbrough/temp116#Yet more are harvested candidates from the Spanish WP - though since I don't read Spanish, they may well be anti-feminists. Would you be interested in seeing if any might be worth bringing over (or already exist under another name)? All the best: Rich Farmbrough23:00, 23 May 2015 (UTC).

Hi @Rich Farmbrough: I looked the articles over and all (or at least most) have solid RS beyond what's in their es articles so I'll get them translated! Just up my alley. :) Are you going to Wikimania? You proposed a talk, right? --Rosiestep (talk) 23:17, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Rosie, you are the best! AS to Wikimania it's looking like it will be far too expensive this year. The submission was turned down: I may prepare something to be sent. All the best: Rich Farmbrough18:55, 25 May 2015 (UTC).

Wetlands

Good choice, I've created Template:Location map Colombia Bogotá.Some of them look quite tricky to translate fully, perhaps you could do the main Wetlands of Bogotá fully?♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:33, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

@Dr. Blofeld: I've started Wetlands of Bogotá and I'll go back to it tomorrow. The es article's entire History section is unreferenced so I'm not going to leave that alone as I don't know how much might be original research. Do you want to add the map? Can you add the red dots like in the es article? --Rosiestep (talk) 03:19, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, I had a go at a map but it messed up so waiting for Frietjes to add one. I found a common source for the wetlands so sub stubbed them all. Can you flesh them out a bit? Only problem is is that some of the area figures cited in the source differ to those on Spanish wiki :-(♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:32, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

@Kelapstick: hi and thanks for offering to lend a hand. I stumbled across {{tl|Mining in Africa}} and was appalled by the redlinks. So a group of us are going to create the remaining 16 Mining in Foo-country articles in sandbox and then nom them at DYK in one fell swoop. This is why we aren't going to create the articles in mainspace as the DYK rule is the article isn't eligible if it's in mainspace for longer than 7 days.

I will have a look at it over the weekend, our mutual evil doctor friend brought up the Intertranswiki Project on my talk page a few weeks ago (I started a short list for some missing articles in Mongolia), and I convinced my man in Ulaanbaatar to create an account (he can be a godsend when translation is needed, and he knows Russian as well). If you want to sand box it up to maintain DYK eligibility prior to moving over I am good with that (it's what I usually do). I haven't done any actual mining in Africa, but I and Calistemon created the African Barrick Gold-related articles back in the day (which would be good for Tanzania). --kelapstick(bainuu) 02:01, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

I have started on Wikipedia:WikiProject Intertranswiki/Sandbox/Mining industry of Tanzania, because it's easy and I am lazy :) --kelapstick(bainuu) 02:39, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
Alright, mining in Tanzania is of sufficient length (and illustrated!), although it could probably use a bit of expansion (particular about law, which is briefly covered in the world bank book), so I will have a go again at that tomorrow. It will also take someone to go through and fix my dodgy writing, but one down, fifteen to go! --kelapstick(bainuu) 03:28, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

@Kelapstick: ok... so it's official... you are a rock star of mining articles. That was fast! I'll see what I can add over the weekend. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:32, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

Well, if mediocre articles is your thing, I am your man! Also, a career in mining (both in North America and overseas) helps. I just started the Tunisia article (I know a mechanic who used to work there pre-revolution, he quite enjoyed it). Is there somewhere this monthly collaboration is being coordinated (besides here), I saw some on the main talk page, but it spans a couple topics.--kelapstick(bainuu) 01:39, 31 May 2015 (UTC)
It may be worth dropping a note at WT:MINING, or maybe pinging some of the more active editors there (it's not a terribly active wikiproject, but there are some solid editors there). --kelapstick(bainuu) 01:48, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

@Kelapstick: I first mentioned it on the Intertranswiki page maybe a couple of weeks ago, Wikipedia:WikiProject Intertranswiki#Start class general missing topic focus for May/June: Mining in Africa, and then I added it to User talk:Nvvchar#Mining in Africa as Char, Dr. Blofeld, and I use that page for coordinating a bunch of stuff. But yup, WT:MINING would be a good place to cross-post, so... WT:MINING#Mining in Africa. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:26, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

@Nvvchar: regarding Wikipedia:WikiProject Intertranswiki/Sandbox/Mining industry of Guinea, there's a Harv error for the Series 2012 ref, which is missing. Can you please add it? Thanks. --Rosiestep (talk) 01:54, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

I know working on and improving women-related articles is one of your (many) passions here. I believe that, while stable, the DeeDee Jonrowe page could use your expertise. I added how she was impacted by the fire that you and I previously discussed. And I realized when I did that my references were the only two proper references in the article. I know you are incredibly busy, (seriously!) but if you can squeeze it in, the article can use your TLC. Notability has been established, but the article has prose and fan-pov issues. Bertha Lutz Comment

Flowering Japanese Cherry cultivar, probably Prunus 'Kanzan'.

Hi Rosie, I was working on Therezinha Zerbini tonight when I noticed Berta Lutz. Her real name was Bertha Lutz (explicitly named Bertha Lutz or ironically renamed as Adalberta Lutz, even Albertina Lutz), but User:Rsabbatini merged two contents in 2005 and renamed the article Berta Lutz. This happened because poet Lima Barreto "aportuguesou" (made it to Portuguese (language) in 1922. She was daughter of immigrants, as you know. The name Berta, appears in Uma atuação da Dona Berta, by Careta, 6 maio 1922, cited in Resende (45 kms from Volta Redonda, my hometown), Valença (the city where my parents were born and where I spent half of my childhood), 2004, p. 521. Therefore, I ask you, as sysop, to rename the article Bertha Lutz, according to my statement here. Thank you dear, Krenakarore TK 22:00, 17 June 2015 (UTC)  !

@Krenakarore: I'm jazzed that you're working on these articles. As you might have noticed, I moved your comment to Bertha's talkpage to give others an opportunity to comment... 30 days is about right. Cheers, --Rosiestep (talk) 01:03, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Rosie, I'm crossed when I see people tag pages instead of solving the problem . Unlikely to be commented. Happy to assist you, Krenakarore TK 06:32, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
@Krenakarore: Sunflowers, Brazilian. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:57, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
@Krenakarore: If you're referring to Bertha, I'm confused. I said I'd make the change in 30 days, giving time for others to speak their mind. I said that as the article has been renamed once before, so 30 days is a common waiting period for sysops to get feedback form others in these situations. Don't know why that would make you cross... perhaps you think I'll forget about it, in which case, you're wrong. If you're crossed about something else, some "tag", I don't follow your drift; help. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:23, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
Sorry, I thought I was being funny . I meant that it's unlikely that somebody may contest this move once the prize bears her name Bertha. Nonetheless, I agree with a 30-day period or more if needed. As for being "crossed" (angry), you said "jazzed" (delighted), so... I thought I was being funny again . The Rambling Man tagged the page I guess (tags are soooooo boring ! I prefer to solve the problem instead). Cheers , Krenakarore TK 20:11, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
@Krenakarore: Got it! We're good. :) --Rosiestep (talk) 03:27, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 4

Newsletter • May/June 2015

Hello friends! We have been hard at work these past two months. For this report:

The directory is live!

For the first time, we are happy to bring you an exhaustive, comprehensive WikiProject Directory. This directory endeavors to list every single WikiProject on the English Wikipedia, including those that don't participate in article assessment. In constructing the broadest possible definition, we have come up with a list of approximately 2,600 WikiProjects. The directory tracks activity statistics on the WikiProject's pages, and, for where it's available, statistics on the number of articles tracked by the WikiProject and the number of editors active on those articles. Complementing the directory are description pages for each project, listing usernames of people active on the WikiProject pages and the articles in the WikiProject's scope. This will help Wikipedians interested in a subject find each other, whether to seek feedback on an article or to revive an old project. (There is an opt-out option.) We have also come up with listings of related WikiProjects, listing the ten most relevant WikiProjects based on what articles they have in common. We would like to promote WikiProjects as interconnected systems, rather than isolated silos.

A tremendous amount of work went into preparing this directory. WikiProjects do not consistently categorize their pages, meaning we had to develop our own index to match WikiProjects with the articles in their scope. We also had to make some adjustments to how WikiProjects were categorized; indeed, I personally have racked up a few hundred edits re-categorizing WikiProjects. There remains more work to be done to make the WikiProject directory truly useful. In the meantime, take a look and feel free to leave feedback at the WikiProject X talk page.

Stuff in the works!

What have we been working on?

  • A new design template—This has been in the works for a while, of course. But our goal is to design something that is useful and cleanly presented on all browsers and at all screen resolutions while working within the confines of what MediaWiki has to offer. Additionally, we are working on designs for the sub-components featured on the main project page.
  • A new WikiProject talk page banner in Lua—Work has begun on implementing the WikiProject banner in Lua. The goal is to create a banner template that can be usable by any WikiProject in lieu of having its own template. Work has slowed down for now to focus on higher priority items, but we are interested in your thoughts on how we could go about creating a more useful project banner. We have a draft module on Test Wikipedia, with a demonstration.
  • New discussion reports—We have over 4.8 million articles on the English Wikipedia, and almost as many talk pages as well. But what happens when someone posts on a talk page? What if no one is watching that talk page? We are currently testing out a system for an automatically-updating new discussions list, like RFC for WikiProjects. We currently have five test pages up for the WikiProjects on cannabis, cognitive science, evolutionary biology, and Ghana.
  • SuggestBot for WikiProjects—We have asked the maintainer of SuggestBot to make some minor adjustments to SuggestBot that will allow it to post regular reports to those WikiProjects that ask for them. Stay tuned!
  • Semi-automated article assessment—Using the new revision scoring service and another system currently under development, WikiProjects will be getting a new tool to facilitate the article assessment process by providing article quality/importance predictions for articles yet to be assessed. Aside from helping WikiProjects get through their backlogs, the goal is to help WikiProjects with collecting metrics and triaging their work. Semi-automation of this process will help achieve consistent results and keep the process running smoothly, as automation does on other parts of Wikipedia.

Want us to work on any other tools? Interested in volunteering? Leave a note on our talk page.

The WikiProject watchers report is back!

The database report which lists WikiProjects according to the number of watchers (i.e., people that have the project on their watchlist), is back! The report stopped being updated a year ago, following the deactivation of the Toolserver, but a replacement report has been generated.

The subject article has been lined up for appearance on the main page at DYK but it appears to have several {{citation needed}} tags which have been added subsequent to your last edit. Could you address these if possible? The Rambling Man (talk) 12:13, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
