January newsletter

SYMBIOSIS: The lichen task force newsletter — January 2023
A look at what we've accomplished, working together

Happy new year! We head into 2023 with plenty of work to do. We're missing articles on a handful of lichen families, scores of lichen genera and thousands of lichen species. Dozens of important lichenologists are "missing" too. We need to check or update the taxonomy of hundreds of existing taxa articles. Many articles about basic lichen structures and functions are either tiny stubs or badly in need of referencing or updating. There's certainly enough to keep us busy for a good long while! Here's to a productive year ahead.

Project news
Newsletter challenge – last month's champion and a new challenge

Kazamzam met last month's challenge and provided an updated reference for the Cladonia squamosa article – which indicated a significantly larger world range for the species than had been previously listed. Nice job!

This month, we're looking for someone to replace the dead reference in Ramalina fraxinea (defunct since April 2018!) with one (or more) which corroborates the information that the old reference did. The editor who meets this challenge will get public kudos in the next newsletter.

Got a suggestion? A correction? Something you'd like to see included in a future issue? Drop a note at the Tip Line with your ideas!

Tips

Hi, thanks for your contributions. Please remember not to jam together ISO symbols and values (15 m, not 15m). And we don't capitalise headings (Number of operators, not Operators). Tony (talk) 03:44, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up, just coming back from a wikibreak so I'm a bit rusty. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 05:57, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

language=, lang=

Thank you for your edit to Sergei Ivanovich Zarudny. Just so you know, spelling out "language=" in full is optional for the "lang=" parm in {{cite book}}: "Examples: |language=ru; |lang=fr, pt-br; |lang=Russian; |language=French, Portuguese". – Raven  .talk 03:53, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Hey @.Raven, thanks for mentioning that. The real edit was correcting for a minor syntax error with the interwiki link being placed before the last category. The other minor changes are just style changes that AWB suggested and I agreed with. Since those kind of edits are really minor and are cosmetic in nature they are only done when there are other substantive edits being made as per WP:COSMETICBOT. But thank you for reaching out and letting me know :-) Dr vulpes (💬📝) 04:04, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Question from Mousaea on Wikipedia:About (20:45, 2 April 2023)

Can I earn money on Wikipedia? If, how is that? --Mousaea (talk) 20:45, 2 April 2023 (UTC)

I'm not sure if my ping reached you through, so I'd let you know that you this one of your edits added Category:Articles with short description manually on Lydia York, which is undesirable as this category should be auto-populated by the shortdesc template and auto-removed if the template is removed. Since it is tagged as AWB, I'm assuming this issue has happened on a number of other pages, so can you please look into it? Thanks! CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 19:22, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

ooof thank you @CX Zoom for letting me know I'll go back and fix it. I'm coming back after a wikibreak plus having covid (not once but twice!) so I've bubbled around a bit. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 19:47, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Hello Dr vulpes, I came across the Lycodon mackinnoni article while editing misspelled words. Problem is, copy edits are needed in the introduction section. First, all words in those sentences should not be italicized. Secondly, one of the sentences in the introduction seems redundant by restating the previous sentence. I bring this to your attention because you were the last editor listed in the history section, following several additions by an anonymous user. If I were to copy edit, I would most likely revert back to the last clean copy made by Citation bot on February 26, 2023‎. However, I thought you might like to take another look at the article. Regards. Woodlot (talk) 19:51, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

Hey @Woodlot, I was just doing some cleaning and wasn't really making serious edits to that article. I just went ahead and reverted everything. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 21:10, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

Rollback granted

Hi Dr vulpes. After reviewing your request, I have enabled rollback on your account. Please keep the following things in mind while using rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle or RedWarn.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Salvio giuliano 23:33, 9 April 2023 (UTC)

Are you the main author of Associated Students of the University of California, Los Angeles? Want to try for a DYK? --evrik (talk) 17:14, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

Hey @Evrik, I'm not the main author that owuld be @ROADKILL: but I'm more then willing to help or do it if ROADKILL doesn't. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 18:04, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
@ROADKILL:, thoughts? the tags need to be addressed. --evrik (talk) 16:48, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
@Evrik The article passes WP:GNG easily, but it does lean on primary sources a bit much. I can try and go though the newspaper archives again and see what I can pull up. There's a lot of older material but finding articles after 1990 that aren't from the student newspaper is a little harder. But if you have any ideas for sources just let me know I'm more than willing to go hunting! Dr vulpes (💬📝) 21:13, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
@ROADKILL: I think it can go as it is. --evrik (talk) 17:19, 14 April 2023 (UTC)

Regarding the reputability of media sources

Hey, I has noticed you made a revision to the Bud Light page and cited some unreliable sources (NY Post, Fox News) and I was wondering as to what the criteria are that you use to decide if a source is reliable. Is there an organization(s) you can list that have marked these sources as unreputable? I eagerly await your response. <IP redacted> 23:02, 14 April 2023 (UTC)

For sure <IP redacted>, here on Wikipedia we don't have an outside organization that lists which sources are reputable and unreputable. Almost everything is based on community Wikipedia:Consensus, including if sources are reliable, and independent. So if you read the edit summary I left you'll notice two links WP:NYPOST and WP:FOXNEWSPOLITICS. They're shortcuts to another page WP:RSP which is a list of common sources that people have questions about if they are WP:RELIABLE. There should be links next to each entry that will take you to discussions about the suitability of each source, you can also search in the archive. For the NY Post article I based my decision off of this request for comment (RFC: New York Post (nypost.com)) on its suitability as a news source. For the FOX News article the guidance is a little less clear as the community has not reached concessess on its use in topics such as this, but there is some general guidelines which you can find here. Hope that answered your question if you have any other questions feel free to leave a comment here on my talk page. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 01:32, 15 April 2023 (UTC)

Using TNCStatus

I noticed you using {{TNCStatus}} on some plant pages. Is there a trick to using it? I tried it on Bouteloua dactyloides and it does not seem to have worked correctly. MtBotany (talk) 22:00, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Hey @MtBotany sorry for not updating the documents, I'll go do that right now. This was my first template so I'm still getting the hang of things. The template pulls the conservation status data from Wikidata, a lot of plants don't have it so I've been adding it in batches. Check out the entry on wikidata now, I added the conservation status so it should work. [1]https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q143816
Are you working on a batch of articles now? I can upload the conservation status for them tonight if you want. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 22:10, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
@Dr vulpes I think I understand better how it works. So I should check over on wikidata before using it. I was trying that out as something new and interesting rather than doing a batch of anything. Happy to help out if you need/want it.
Mostly what I do is look for the most common plants in my region and either add them if the article does not yet exist or get them up to what I consider acceptable in completeness. So at some point I'll probably add about a dozen paragraphs on ecology of B. dactyloides, its taxonomic history, cultivation, etc. MtBotany (talk) 23:25, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
Ha that's funny @MtBotany we're doing pretty similar projects. I started by adding the conservation status for plants in California and figured I would go back over them and add more content as time allows. I enjoy going through papers and records finding things so it's also a treat when you can find something with a few papers on it. Any help is appreciated, my goal was to move as much data about plants onto Wikidata so I could update them in bulk in case something changes, like conservation status. The next sort of big step for me is to add the reference to Wikidata and then bring that over to Wikipedia. I wrote some R code to help me gather the conservation statuses off of the NatureServ API and then I do some light data wrangling before loading it into Wikidata. A minor problem I've run into is that I'm only allowed to download 100 entries at a time from NatureServ so I have it now set up to pull 10 batches of 100 and then combined them. Once the large import is complete I can rerun the script every couple of months or so to gather any updated entries and then repeat the process of updating everything. If you see any sort of area that you think needs addressing or could use something similar to what I've set up for updating conservation statuses let me know and I'll see what I can do.Dr vulpes (💬📝) 23:38, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Violence Against Men Edit

Pardon I wasnt logged in, I'll look for a good source for the thing I posted, didnt realize it was a blog post haha.

Yeah it is a topic I care very deeply about. I'll try and get a good citation for ya. And pardon if I seemed impolite in my edit history post haha. RadioHobbyist (talk) 05:37, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

It's all good, I know that on that article that topic goes back and forth and back and forth. I just try to keep the sources solid and stay out of it.
Off topic question @RadioHobbyist but do you do any ham radio stuff? I've been trying to get the ham radio wikiproject back up but it's been a little more uphill than I expected. If you check out my work I've been uploading screen captures from my SDRPlay of some HF communications and making some ham radio content. If I'm way off base here that's ok, your username is a dead giveaway for this kind of nerd stuff. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 05:43, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
I think I found a much better source, what say you? It was from a medical journal. I dunno what the citation generator thingy did with the last part of it but otherwise it seems pretty solid since the guide you sent said "Journals are the BEST source you can get" to jokingly paraphrase it. And yeeeah, that and along with me being passionate about it, that last editor struck a nerve with me reacting as he did, but thats neither here nor there. Pardon my impoliteness.
Also oooooo, that sounds rad, I know OF ham radio stuff but am mainly a listener as I dont have the money or gear for broadcasting, a lotta my stuff also ends up focusing on public and local broadcasting, a LOT of the edits on the page for WXPR were me haha. Though I do love shortwave listening too, I just have a hard time with some techier things since I am mainly a listener. RadioHobbyist (talk) 05:51, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
You should check it out, it's a lot easier than you might think. I got my technician license (entry level) when I was 13. I promise that is not some flex, I didn't pass the first time and I only passed the second time by one question. When I went to upgrade to get HF privileges I only passed by one question. I'm a (non-clinical) psychologist not an engineer and I still was able to do it. My father is really big into SWL so I got him an SDRPlay for Christmas. It's an amazing unit and if you can spare ~$150 I highly recommend their products I've really enjoyed mine. During COVID it was at least something to look forward to every night.
If you ever wanna work on an article together or just need a second set of eyes to look something over feel free to hit me up.Dr vulpes (💬📝) 06:02, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
Hmmmm I should, I think i'm gonna wait till I have money to though cause I think it costs money yeah? And nah lol I know you aint flexing no worries. Also lol passing by one question sounds like something that'd happen to me. :p And ohh its interesting that you're a psychologist! And niiiice, my father didnt actively SWL but he put the idea into my already broadcasting obsessed mine when I was a kid and it stuck in there lol. One Day I will get an SDR, that and or I'd love an extension card thingy to put in a computer so that I can put a TV antenna in that thing.
Thanks thanks I appreciate it! I hope that citation I found was satisfactory/up to snuff, thanks for being polite to me too if that aint silly sounding of me to say; as I said before I can be real passionate about the topic I wrote about, and you being polite after the other editor's comments made me a lot calmer about the topic at hand lol. Once again 'scuse me if I was rude. ^^' RadioHobbyist (talk) 06:09, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
For sure, I try my best to be civil and polite. I think a lot gets lost when talking with people online so I always try to be polite and kind. Hit me up if you ever need anything and check out some of this WebSDRs KFS Dr vulpes (💬📝) 06:39, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

BLPPROD

Hi. You nominated Zhao Wenfu, Wen Minsheng, Wang Huayun, Song Yuxi, An Pingsheng, Chen Manyuan, Tan Furen, and Jia Qiyun for deletion via BLPPROD today; however, all 8 of them are deceased. Please take more care. Curbon7 (talk) 03:52, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

@Curbon7 how do you know they are dead if there isn't a source in the article? As per WP:BDP "Anyone born within the past 115 years (on or after 17 May 1908) is covered by this policy unless a reliable source has confirmed their death.". No source in article, there for no reliable source, no reliable source there for assume alive. I will admit one of them is listed as having been born in January 1908 so technically that was improper of me. I promise I'm not being a jerk but is there a policy or rule that I'm missing here? I swear this was covered in WP:NPPSCHOOL when I took it last year. If I'm making mistakes I do want to improve and not make them again so any advice or direction would be appreciated. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 04:06, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
I think you raise some good points, and I have some counterpoints of my own. From my interpretation, BLPPROD is meant for explicitly living people, not deceased people with an uncited death dates; that seems like a whole can-of-worms that is beyond the purpose of BLPPROD. From my reading of it, the 115 year rule seems like it is meant for those where there is no death date and we are unsure if they are deceased or not; in such cases, we consider them alive unless they are beyond 115 years old. However, as stated above, a death date is provided, even if uncited. This next part is my personal opinion rather than any interpretation of policy. All eight subjects appear to be notable and have corresponding articles with citations in the Chinese Wikipedia; I would recommend in such instances where a subject is notable and a sourced other language version exists to just do the work of transferring over the sources yourself, it doesn't take much longer than nominating the article and saves a bit of time for everyone else. Curbon7 (talk) 11:41, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
I'm not surprised at all by what I mentioned on AfD, as I believe you may have certain feelings towards China. I'm also taken aback to see that you are attempting to delete articles about members of parliament and ministers. This behavior doesn't align with that of a pro-wiki editor. It's important to note that MPs and ministers are automatically considered notable on Wikipedia and can even remain as stub articles according to NPOL guidelines. What seems to be the issue? By the way, I want to clarify that I'm not Chinese but Thai. If you take actions based on personal feelings, it is possible that one day it could result in your banning from editing. It's important to approach editing with intelligence and objectivity. Just an advice! Thank you for your understanding. 1.47.16.104 (talk) 18:52, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
How would you feel if the opposite happened? What if someone edited a bunch of articles about political figures to say that they had died, had no citations to prove it, and we left it up here? Would that be doing harm? I think the answer is obvious that any uncited material in biographies can be harmful. Removing it until someone can replace it with propper sources is a better option than just leaving unverified information out there. IP Editor, be WP:BOLD, you obviously have language skills that I don't have. Why don't you go to zhwiki and help bring those sources here? I do that for French and Spanish sources when I can't find something in English.
I've noticed that if things don't go your way you lash out. I get it these articles are important to you. But your unfounded accusation of bias is not constructive to improving enwiki. On my userpage I have links to all my logs. I encourage you to go though them. Here is my CSD log, PROD log, as well as my AfC, and AfD histories. You won't find race or gender bias in there. (joke) If anything my PROD log shows I have it out for footballers (/joke). As for your AfD, I did not appreciate your tone to my delete or merge vote. Even after you lashed out at me, insulted my heritage, and accused me of Sinophobia I asked that you be given extra time to work on the article because you said you were traveling, and I personally offered to help improve the article with you. All I asked was that you point me towards some English sources because I only know English (and a little French and Spanish). At the time of the nomination your article had one source, and it wasn't very good. Now your article is GREAT, people will learn things from it, look at the difference between the article now and what it was when I voted delete or merge. If you had just pinged me to say that you've made some changes I would have changed my vote. Imagine if someone made up a fake story about a Chinese myth and we just left it there, that would do a lot of harm.
I hope you understand where my concerns are coming from. They're not Sinophobic backlash, it's that I'm concerned about false information being spread here. Just look at this list of hoaxes that have been on Wikipedia, I helped find one that had been here for over 11 years. In my case it was just a Mountain, but what concerns me is if this had been about something more important. I hope you make an account IP Editor, you have a lot to add here and I look forward to seeing your future work. If you ever need help you're more than welcome to leave a message on my talk page, I might not be able to help with everything here but I promise that I'll try my best. Yeah you're right @Curbon7, I've done this in the past with other articles when I was comfortable with the other language. I have concerns about trying to do that with non-latin based alphabets, not because of some bias or anything like that but more of the technical issues with translation and my own lack of knowledge in those areas. There have been a few times I've done this where the translation software gives me the right name but the wrong person. Next time I'll punt it over to someone in propper Wikiproject or see if the article can be connected with something on Wikidata etc. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 20:03, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your positive impact and the valuable points you have shared with me. Despite my initial anger, I appreciate how you kindly asked for additional time for me to work on the article when I mentioned that I was traveling. I now fully understand your concerns regarding Wikipedia, and if I have been rude, I sincerely apologize. I have noticed that many AfDs appear to lack fairness, as some articles are swiftly voted for deletion without thorough research or consideration of sources in other languages. This kind of behavior is unacceptable and can cause significant harm to Wikipedia, while also demotivating editors who are passionate about their respective fields. In my opinion, the essence of AfD lies in fostering discussions rather than relying solely on a voting poll. It is crucial to encourage open dialogue and a comprehensive examination of the subject matter before making any decisions. Thank you for your understanding of my sensitive state of mind. Regards 1.47.16.104 (talk) 02:57, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
It's all good IP Editor no harm no foul, I'm glad we worked this out. Sometimes it's hard to figure out people's intent on the internet. If we had met in person this would have been over in 30 seconds and we would have gotten along fine.
After our talk I went though some of the pages related to the characters from the Investiture of the Gods and tagged them for improvement. They had some of the same problems that were in the Su Quanzhong ‎AfD so I wanted to make sure they got fixed and didn't end up at AfD. I was able to improve two of them today, with copyedits, sources, and links to the book on WikiSource. For example I think I did a fair job cleaning up the article on Chong Heihu. If you know of any sources for these or think of ways I can help or improve them just let me know. I'll try my best to improve a couple every day until they're done. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 03:37, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
Your copyediting skills are really amazing! Back in the day, I used to request copyediting help from a copyeditor named Wikignome on Wikipedia. Unfortunately, he/she has retired from editing. However, I would love to work with you in the future. Whenever I have time to improve these articles, I will ping you for copyediting. Thank you so much! 1.47.16.104 (talk) 07:04, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
For sure anytime. I'm working on my dissertation so if I don't get back to you please feel free to ping me again as it might have fallen through the cracks. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 07:15, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
Dr vulpes, I just came to leave a remark about these BLPPRODs but see that you already have several. I went on a tagging spree for unsourced BLP articles about a year or so ago, what I thought were straight-forward taggings and ran into problems almost immediately with other editors so now I steer clear of them except in very obvious cases.
But I'm really leaving this message now because I see you are working on your dissertation. If it's not too intrusive, what discipline do you work in? Mine was in sociology, specifically, sociology of religion. Clashes with my main adviser prevented me from finishing with my final draft. But I'm always interested in learning about other people's experiences being ABD. The situation seems to go much more smoothly in the sciences than in the social sciences and liberal arts. Any way, good luck with it. Liz Read! Talk! 19:01, 24 May 2023 (UTC)
Hey @Liz, yeah I learned my lesson about BLPPROD pretty quickly. But it wasn't all bad, IP Editor and I are working on improving some articles now so it's a nice silver lining to the whole ordeal. I'm in health psychology and I'm doing a research PhD not a clinical PhD, so I won't be doing therapy or anything like that. My dissertation is a meta-analysis on the perceptions of substances use (cannabis, tobacco, vaping) and the severity of COVID-19 symptoms. So basically I took a few dozen studies that asked the question "do you think if you smoke tobacco/cannabis/vape and catch COVID will your symptoms be better, the same, or worse than a non-smoker?". You see kind of neat patterns in the data, there are a subset of people who believe cannabis cures everything, another group that believes smoking anything will make covid worse, and yet another group that believe vaping is less harmful than tobacco and will not influence your covid symptoms. What gets really neat is some studies asked questions to figure out what people's political leanings were. In the USA that variable had a really big effect on COVID perceptions, but in other anglophone countries (AU/UK/NZ) it had either a small or almost no effect. I kind of wish I had done that study instead but hey I'm almost done and got a job lined up so I'm happy.
I always liked my sociology classes, which I think is in part because I enjoyed social psychology a lot more than the cognitive psychology classes I took. Brains are cool and everything but have you SEEN people?!? Dr vulpes (💬📝) 20:37, 24 May 2023 (UTC)
That sounds really interesting stuff and so up-to-date with recent events. My research involved dozens of interviews but luckily I had the money to pay for a transcriber or I'd still be working on transcribing all of those tapes. I wonder if recent technological developments (my work was done in the 2000s) have allowed for some speech-to-text functionality that would do all of that transcribing for you. I was working with foreign-born professionals though so some of the accents were very thick so that would be a challenge. But it must be easier doing it now than 15 years ago.
With BLPPRODs, I ran into a long-time editor who was insistent that I go through the entire edit history for the tagged article and see if there had EVER been a reference that had been mistakenly removed. I found a couple instances of this thing in the articles you tagged and discovered one editor in particular (thank god, no longer active) who seemed to go through articles on athletes who played handball and just remove references. Once I spotted their work in the page history of several articles, I just looked to see what they had removed. But, it is rather time-consuming to do this kind of investigation. Frankly, doing this sort of damage (or vandals who subtlely change historical dates which is the worst!) is more insidious and harder to catch than the much more obvious "My friend is gay!" or "Poop poop poop!" kind of vandal. Recently, I've come across a couple of vandals who go into historical articles and change much of the data regarding battles from who won the fight to how many people were killed on each side. But changing the Wikipedia article won't change history and in time these intentional errors are caught. Liz Read! Talk! 22:38, 25 May 2023 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Clipperton Island

The article Clipperton Island you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Clipperton Island and Talk:Clipperton Island/GA1 for issues which need to be addressed. Please stop your edit spree in changing articles that refer to spin to refer to particle physics. Macroscopic objects can have spin also. Xxanthippe (talk) 22:59, 12 June 2023 (UTC).

Hi @Xxanthippe, did you read the request for these edits over at Wikipedia:BOTREQ? Dr vulpes (💬📝) 23:32, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
Also if you've seen an article that I've edited where an edit is a mistake or not appropriate let me know. I've gone through them and only edited articles that are related to particle physics, but mistakes happen. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 23:39, 12 June 2023 (UTC)

Clipperton Postal Code

Hi, I'm just trying to understand the thinking behind removing the postal code from the infobox. The GA review noted that it shouldn't be a single sentence section at the end of the article; I thought the infobox was a good place to hold it. Now it isn't in the article at all. —Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 14:46, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

My bad, I misread that as to mean that it had to be removed. Thanks for pointing that out. In the future if I do anything silly just go ahead and revert it. You've put in a bunch of work into the Clipperton article and are a competent editor so I trust your judgment and really respect your opinions. I won't take it personally and honestly 9 out of 10 times it's some silly mistake slash brain fart on my end. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 16:41, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
No troubles! I just wanted to make sure I hadn't misunderstood anything :) Thanks for all your work on the article. —Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 18:18, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

"particle physics" to "physics"

Interesting how you changed some links to "particle physics" then changed them back to "physics" again. Just a mistake? David Spector (talk) 22:58, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

Yeah so what happened @David spector is there was a request for some page changes over at WP:BOTREQUEST so I went ahead and made the changes. Then on Talk:Spin (particle physics) it was decided that this was not a good idea, the original requester apologized for their mistake as well as for not going though the proper channels, and now I'm fixing the errors. I could have just gone and reverted all the pages but since there was also a lot of extra work added like tags and minor clean ups I figured it would be better to go back and make the edits for just the wikilinked bits. I'll add this later to my list of mistakes. It was agreed that there wasn't a big rush but I have some free time so I might as well fix it now. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 23:10, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

It was not really your mistake, you were just fixing things up. It happens. You do a good job here. David Spector (talk) 00:44, 15 June 2023 (UTC)

😊 thanks @David spector, I try! Dr vulpes (💬📝) 01:45, 15 June 2023 (UTC)

Massive article clean up

I wanted to thank you for your great work on cleaning up physics related articles. I was wondering if you were using some kind of automated tool? would it be possible to add a bot or a minor tag to your edits? That way it would be easier for other users to filter your edits from other edits in our wachtlists. ReyHahn (talk) 14:46, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

@Dr vulpes: I am still seeing many of the articles in my watchlist being just some of your edits. Please consider using minor or bot tag.--ReyHahn (talk) 10:59, 16 June 2023 (UTC)

Looks like we both honed in on the arbitration and on Roosevelt's visit. All of the suggested ones are under 200 characters, so that's good. We'd need to make sure the citation for which ever ones are selected is immediately adjacent to the statement. I'd say we submit with these four:
I reworked the USS Macon one because the purpose of the flight wasn't just mail delivery (it was a training flight) and the NASA one to avoid using "launch" twice. Let me know if you want me to handle the nomination or if you'd rather do it. —Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 20:25, 14 June 2023 (UTC)

I'm looking more closely at the timeline, and it looks like the USS Macon reached the USS Houston on July 19, which would be after the ship left Clipperton. (The Houston's records say they arrived at Clipperton on the 17th and departed "later that same day".) I tweaked the article text and the hook ... —Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 01:16, 15 June 2023 (UTC)
I made a further tweak to the bit about the Macon's mail drop to state the specific day of the encounter. With that, we might be able to use a version of that hook for On this Day ... —Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 13:48, 15 June 2023 (UTC)

Dear Dr Vulpes, I think in the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kamran Talattof you asked that if you've missed something to ping you. The named chair of Kamran Talattof (he is the Elahé Omidyar Mir-Djalali Professor of Persian Language) at the University of Arizona - which I think might be a sufficiently notable university is something you might have missed. (https://news.arizona.edu/story/ua-receives-1m-elah-omidyar-mirdjalali-professor-persian-language) . Just letting you know etc and no worries. (Msrasnw (talk) 14:42, 15 June 2023 (UTC))

Dear Dr Vulpes, I am not sure if you were still watching the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kamran Talattof. It has been closed by Star Mississippi with the rationale No input is forthcoming, and no clarity whether the named chair counter Dr vulpes' early input. This seems to me a little off.. as it seems clear to me that your contribution erroneously said Not a named chair. This seems to me clearly wrong and has had an influence on the closer's decision. This is indicative of one problem I seem to be having with Afds which is that some possibly under-researched contributions - particularly by respected editors - to Afd debates often don't seem to engage with later contributions - particularly on issues of fact - and lead to inappropriate closures. Just letting you know about a fellow editors worries. Feel free to ignore this, as it might not be welcome by you and might be the ramblings of someone who should not really be bothered about this kind of thing. But best wishes anyway, (Msrasnw (talk) 09:55, 28 June 2023 (UTC))

On legal terminology

Hi, Dr vulpes. It's great to see someone else getting into the topic area of intermediate-level federal appelate cases. We're sorely lacking in such articles; I'd reckon we have articles less than 1% of GNG-eligible cases of that nature just for the past 20 years... worse rates still going farther back in time. I'm sad to admit I've written only one intermediate court–level article myself, although I also have two SCOTUS articles and a District Court–level sub-article.

As you're getting into this area, I'll caution that the terminology in such articles can be very specific, sometimes in ways that seems counterintuitive. If you want to keep calling a petition for cert. an appeal, well, I'm not going to revert that because it's not important enough to fight someone over, but you should at least be aware that that's nonstandard terminology. Even if one considers what happens after a cert. petition is granted to be an appeal, the filing of the petition itself is not an appeal by any definition I know of. Direct appeals to SCOTUS are a separate thing and much rarer.

Maybe this seems pedantic, but these things come up all the time with legal articles. lethargilistic put me through my paces when I wrote my first law article and impressed upon me the importance of getting the little things right. (And I'm pinging him partly because maybe he'll show up and say "What the fuck are you talking about, Tamzin? Dr vulpes is right." And that seems only fair.) If one isn't vigilant, it's easy to fall into mistakes like conflating "SCOTUS denied cert. regarding X" with "SCOTUS upheld X", or "SCOTUS remanded X for consideration of question Y" with "SCOTUS overturned X".

It's a very interesting article, so thanks for writing it. I hope this doesn't come across as condescending, but I do hope you see where you're coming from. Happy editing. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 08:42, 5 July 2023 (UTC)

@Tamzin I don't know as much about the rules of appellate procedure, but a case doesn't actually go to the Supreme Court unless they *accept* your cert petition, so it's not meaningfully appealed until they do. "Petitioned for cert" or however you want to say that is More Correct. lethargilistic (talk) 09:07, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
Hey @Tamzin, sorry if my revert seemed kind of harsh or rushed. There was no disrespect intended on my end. I was watching the new season of Drive to Survive and responded a bit too quickly (and from my phone). I didn't even notice that it was you, if I had I wouldn't have reverted it I know you know what you're doing. Sorry for making a whole mess of things, going forward I'll try to not respond to things from my phone while watching cars and drama unfold in front of me. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 04:18, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

Question from CPDaccreditation (08:13, 2 August 2023)

Hey! I'm wanting to make an edit to the Continuing section of Professional Development as currently, the information is biased and misleading. I have already edited this once and it was removed due to as assumption of "conflict of interest." I responded to the person that said this however have had no further response and my edit has now been removal. Please could you assist. --CPDaccreditation (talk) 08:13, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

TNCStatus

I've been using the tag all over the place. I've not been keeping count, but I think I've added it to something like 500 pages so far. 99% of the time it works great, but I think you may want to know that occasionally it fails mysteriously. For example on Eurybia glauca it worked before the page move and now gives nothing. I suspect it may be because the genus page name is Eurybia (plant), but I am just guessing since I just write about plants and only a little about code writing. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 20:16, 19 August 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello Dr vulpes,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello Dr vulpes:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 2400 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Hey @DreamRimmer, Thanks for reaching out. I'm slowly getting back into Wikipedia, I had some personal stuff happen that forced me to drop a lot of things all at once. I'm willing to restart the bot this month if no one else has started doing it's task. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 05:05, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Expanding and Working on UC Merced

Hello I am currently working on a project to expand and add more to the UC Merced wikipedia page which has largely been ignored and does not feature much information. I was wondering if you would be interested in helping with this as you have created pages related to the university in the past. Thank you and Happy Holidays! Hey @Yellow alligator sure I wouldn't mind working together it sounds kind of fun. Feel free to email me or make a thread on my talk page and we can plan some things out. Dr vulpes (Talk) 06:19, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello Dr vulpes -- I've declined these because inclusion in an encyclopedia is pretty strong evidence of notability, certainly enough to meet the low A7 threshold. ETA, unless I'm missing something, the nomination of Diego Ruiz de Montoya is a mistake? Regards, Espresso Addict (talk) 01:35, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for catching that @Espresso Addict and sorry for the misstep. on the Merlin article I was looking at the original text and I guess OCR in the PDF file missed it since I just found a text version of it on another site. The second one is a mistake, I just missed the encyclopedia reference at the bottom and thought the Wikisource link was for something else. Super sorry 😬 Dr vulpes (Talk) 01:45, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
