WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  • Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
  • England Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.

@MeegsC: ah apologies, that's my fault. The prep clearing, and updating of the "next prep" counter is not an automated task, it's something the promoting admin generally handles at the same time as filling the queue. I just got distracted after I'd done the queue in this case, and forgot to circle back and complete the process. I've now gone ahead and done the necessary, so it should be all good now. But in general you can ignore such emails if you don't want to read them, as any formal warnings on Wikipedia would have to be posted to your talk page to be valid. That said, I notice you've put the {{Email user topicon}} at the talk of your talk page, which suggests to people that you want to be emailed. I suggest you remove that if you don't want emails. You also have the option of removing your email altogether if you want, which would make it impossible for anyone to email you. Moving pages without consensus

Hello Amakuru. Neel.arunabh has moved the page at their will despite being reverted a while ago. Earlier they edit warred over move [2], [3] despite reaching out to them on talk page, until I was forced to open an RM to go back to the status quo.

Banned user page

Hi there. Was this absolutely necessary and do you feel it is explicitly required by Wikipedia:Banning policy#User_pages? I can see that is says the user page should be updated with the appropriate notice, but I can't see how it says that existing content must be removed. Apologies if I have misread or misunderstood – it wouldn't be the first time! Francis did do a lot here (notwithstanding the rest of the saga) and it seems a pity – to me, YMMV! – to remove it completely. What would you think of restoring his user page and putting the ban notice at the top? Please note: I am not here for a confrontation or to cause trouble – it's a sincere request for you to consider. @DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered: thanks for your note, and to answer your question, no I don't think it was necessary. In my experience it's usual to blank a user page but as you say there's no rule to that effect, so I've restored the old content of the page under the banner.

And believe me, I take absolutely no pleasure in having to ban editors in this way. I've not had much to do with Francis myself, and have of course seen them around doing useful work across the project over the years. But it's clear from the discussion there that things had gone too far, and that from very prominent and respected editors too. I hope there might eventually be a way back to the project for Francis, but it's obvious that some major changes in behaviour would be required. @Renata3: ah, thanks for the spot... I had completely forgotten that I ever contributed to that article! I have found the book source where the cites came from, and added it. Looking at it now it seems that it's a self-published book, so ordinarily wouldn't be allowed, but it's apparently by Imodale Caulker-Burnett and talks specifically about the actions of her family so is probably better than nothing as a primary source for that material. Today's POTD blurb was written in October, before I started my verifiability drive! The one I have been working on today, Template:POTD/2021-06-14, needs a bit of attention with regard to templates whose use I do not understand. Something very strange has happened today. If you look at this page, you will see that the bot created the protected version at 22:00, 27 May 2021‎, and Ravenpuff, who is not a sysop, edited it several times thereafter, introducing an error. @Cwmhiraeth: the reason for why a non-admin was able to edit the template is that the protected POTD templates don't actually have direct full-protection themselves. The reason they get protected is that they are transcluded on to the master pages, which are Main page itself (for today's POTD) and Wikipedia:Main page/Tomorrow, which covers tomorrow's POTD. Because those are protected, their templates are also protected on the correct days due to cascading. But at any other time, the daily templates aren't protected. Thus Template:POTD protected/2021-05-27, the one for two days ago, can now be freely edited by anyone. If you look at the history of the template for the 29th, you'll see that Ravenpuff made all the edits in question before the end of the 27th, when that template was not yet part of Main page/Tomorrow. As an aside, they made a further error when doing the update, which I have now fixed - the template {{POTD row}} should never be used directly on a POTD, as it says in its instructions, it should always be substed. I think this is because otherwise the "recently featured" entries are automatically generated based on the prior days' unprotected templates and it was open to a vandal to insert malicious text on to the main page if they fiddled with those templates. In general, when editing what's in the protected template, I don't touch the formatting generated by the bot, we should only ever touch the text and the definition/size of the image itself. Thank you. I do have vague memories of that being explained to me before, but I can't begin to understand the second error you mention. It's a pity that POTD is so keen on curly brackets! Take "{{POTD {{{1|{{{style|default}}}}}}" for example, what on earth is its function? Don't bother to answer, I wouldn't understand, but I can on the whole learn to work with such templates, mostly by copying the format of earlier POTD pages. Murder of Mollie Tibbetts

Hey Amakuru. We all occasionally do things without being quite as careful as we should; I certainly am not without guilt, so please just take this as a gentle reminder (BTW, years ago I wrote a list of cleanup procedures for moves, at Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions#Moving procedures, which might be helpful). Anyway, though I moved the page after the verdict, you already self-reverted so that's a non-issue; but note that I also acted to retain the history of the redirect when I did the move, as it had some non-trivial (relatively speaking) matters included. That got deleted when you performed the move indicating you didn't check its history (I've already fixed this), so just be careful to check redirects for any page history that should be retained. (If you're not already well aware, the move procedures page I linked previously have instructions on what to do when you do find a "major" page history at the redirect, that should [or sometimes MUST because of copyright issues] be retained.) @Fuhghettaboutit: indeed, and in fact I always check the history of pages when I'm moving them over a redirect, I'm well aware of the need to preserve history. But in this case there was nothing of interest attribution-wise in the redirect, just a pointless history of previous redirect changes, which are all better derived from the move log anyway. So your decision to do a round Robin move was incorrect in this case. Particularly as it would have rendered the redirect history at the "wrong" location. @Fuhghettaboutit: the only intemperate and rude response was yours, coming here accusing me of not checking the page history when in fact the error was yours for moving a redirect unnecessarily. Did you ever consider that maybe I do know what I'm doing, and double check your facts first? And now you've compounded that by undeleting the deleted revisions. To be clear, there is no useful content that needs preserving whatsoever at the revision history of that page, and those revisions should have been deleted with the original page move per our usual procedure for pages that only have redirects in their history. Queue 7

Amakuru, when you promoted Prep 7 to Queue 7, the set did not include the two special occasion hooks for June 5 that need to be included in it. Is there any chance you can promote them into that set, since it needs an admin to make changes to a queue? If not, please let me know and I'll ping the rest of the admins in the hopes that one of them can do it.

Before it was pulled back to the special occasions area because we went from one to two sets a day, the flag hook had been the lead hook in its prep. Perhaps the current lead hook in Queue 7 can be placed in Prep 6 or Prep 7 to make room for it, but I'll let you decide what is best to do. Thank you very much for all you do at DYK! Picture of the Day

For Bastille Day, July 14th, we have Turgo's map of Paris for POTD. However the template is much too clever for me! For a start, I have not told it to select one of twenty images at random, but it has done that anyway. It was my intention to use Template:POTD/2021-07-14, the complete map, as the default POTD, with a link from there to each of the sheets. But the template has other ideas and has scuppered my plan. I would like to have my arrangement because the caption for the complete map explains what it is, whereas the captions for the subpages have not repeated all that information. Hi @Cwmhiraeth:, I'm not sure I'm understanding the issue. When I look at Template:POTD/2021-07-14, it seems to just show the single image File:Turgot map of Paris - Norman B. @Cwmhiraeth: ah, I see what you mean. I think that won't be a problem, the issue is due to the logic in the Template:POTD/Day template. If you hit edit on that template, you can see it has some conditional logic which checks for the existence of subpages numbered /1, /2, /3 etc. If it sees them, it displays the message about having a "random" one and then displays all the individual templates. That shouldn't affect the display on the main page though. If it's really causing a problem on the July planning page, you could consider giving the sub-pages a different schema, like /a /b /c or something but otherwise just remember to have a look at WP:Main page/Tomorrow the day before and check that the protected version looks correct.  — Amakuru (talk) 21:46, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

WikiCup 2021 July newsletter

The third round of the 2021 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 294 points, and our top six scorers all had over 600 points. They were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 1825 points from 3 featured articles, 44 featured article reviews, 14 good articles, 30 good article reviews and 10 DYKs. In addition, he completed a 34-article good topic on the EFL Championship play-offs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a New York specialist, with 1083 points from 2 featured article reviews, 18 good articles, 30 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 869 points from 11 DYKs, all with bonus points, and 54 "In the news" items, mostly covering people who had recently died.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 817 points from 3 featured articles on historic battles in Europe, 5 featured article reviews and 3 good articles.
  • Hog Farm, with 659 points from 2 featured articles and 2 good articles on American Civil War battles, 18 featured article reviews, 2 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 4 DYKs.
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, a snooker specialist and new to the Cup, with 647 points from a featured article, 2 featured article reviews, 6 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 3 DYKs.

In round three, contestants achieved 19 featured articles, 7 featured lists, 106 featured article reviews, 72 good articles, 1 good topic, 62 good article reviews, 165 DYKs and 96 ITN items. We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (one contestant in round 3 lost out because of this). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

@Floquenbeam: I don't doubt that you did what you thought was right, that's why I posted some raised eyebrows here in direct response to Sca, rather than saying anything negative at ERRORS. But then again, I also did what I thought was right and I was was also a bit pissed off to be reverted. If the TFA blurb is using terminology that isn't used anywhere in the limited article, then something has gone wrong somewhere in my book. I've never heard that TFA is supposed to be a dumbed down version of the FA itself. But hey ho. Ah, just came here to apologize for my apparent inability to read. Your comment here was -- of course -- completely correct. I read the TFA blurb first, so when I read the actual article I suppose my brain autocorrected it to match the blurb. Mea culpa. Anyway, by the time I saw your reply it seemed like the discussion was thoroughly off the rails. And either way I was too busy trying to fit my foot in my mouth to type a reply. @Ajpolino: thanks very much for your message, and no need to apologise really. As you say, it all got a bit out of hand over what was really quite a trivial matter, but it wouldn't be the first time that's happened on Wikipedia! And in the end, the matter was settled by someone who didn't participate in the ERRORS "debate" at all, and either everybody was happy with that, or they didn't notice. In regards to the message on my talk page

Yes it is.... And this person (KevinMCE) continuously attacks, makes fun of, talks down to other people and he never, ever treats people in a polite or civil manner and it is very annoying to have someone constantly erase the hard work of editors instead of trying to help, contribute or make any effort whatsoever to fix the edit, or offer constructive criticism.... Also his "opinion" is ironclad fact and the only things that are "relevant" are what he says is relevant and to be perfectly honest with you I'm sick of his attitude so I said something about it to him. I appreciate your reply and that's fine if you want to take any talk segments down, I just do not like arrogant people, who are mean for no legitimate reason and would much rather remove and erase content rather than be constructive and helpful Raleigh80Z90Faema69 (talk) 01:08, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
