strange csd

I made some additional comments at User talk:RolandR I make it a point to avoid articles on this area--clearly this editor concentrates on them. I do not see that nomination as a good sign. DGG ( talk ) 02:34, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

I see someone else has changed the title (not for the better, in my opinion) and taken it to AfD. It seems to me a notable subject, but one point being made there is that it is a fork or overlap with existing articles. I don't know whether I shall have time to read enough of them to decide on that and !vote. JohnCD (talk) 14:50, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

deletion article

why my own article being deleted? i over an over again to read the rules but still dont get it? can u please explained to me? thx — Preceding unsigned comment added by Classic Skull (talkcontribs) 08:39, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

There are two reasons:
  • Wikipedia is choosy about who has articles. It doesn't cover people who are just starting in their career or are "up and coming", only those who have already arrived, so that other people have written about them independently. Wikipedia:Notability (summary) explains the sort of coverage required, and WP:MUSICBIO explains what a musical performer needs to have achieved before he can have an article.
  • Wikipedia is not a place for people to write about themselves. Even for notable people, that is strongly discouraged - see Wikipedia is not about YOU. There are many sites like Myspace and Facebook and LinkedIn for people to write about themselves, but Wikipedia is different.

Speedy deletion

Can I please ask you about deletion nominations? Channel Live is a band with no references and no notability as far as I can tell. Does it qualify for speedy deletion? How about regular deletion? Thanks in advance. USchick (talk) 18:25, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

The test for speedy deletion by WP:CSD#A7 is credible claim of significance or importance. That's a deliberately lower bar than notability, and does not require references; having an album released by a major label like Capitol records is certainly enough. You could consider AfD, but as Amatulic said when declining the speedy, the fact that the album charted is probably enough to pass WP:BAND #2. Agreed, the article is unreferenced, but before taking it to AfD on those grounds you ought to look for refs (see WP:BEFORE); alternatively, just tag it with {{unreferenced}}. For general guidance about deletion, see WP:Deletion policy and links from there. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 18:44, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

2 little things

1st: thx for the nice welcome back in 2012 and the deletion of that page in my Userspace today, sometime it takes some tries to find a system suitable for something 2nd: when I create an alternative account for security and such reaasons (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sock_puppetry#Legitimate_uses_of_alternative_accounts )

can I somehow keep the watchlists of my userspaces in sync???

thanks in Advance

My1xTreme 18:32, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

I don't know of any automatic way to keep the watchlists of two accounts in sync, and I'd be surprised if there is one, but you could try asking at WP:Village pump (technical) - that's where the gurus hang out. From WP:Syndication it seems you can set up an RSS feed for your watchlist, so you could perhaps use that to get a combined view. More crudely, on the watchlist page there is an option "Edit raw watchlist", so you could copy from one account to the other, or maybe merge them offline in a word processor. JohnCD (talk) 19:47, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
and one other question, when I create Security and impersonation protection Userspaces, should I simply create accountss for them and redirect to my userpage or wht would be the best way???
My1xTreme 19:53, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
Well, you can see how I have arranged the alternative account JohnCD (alt) (talk) which I set up to use in places like a public library where it would not be secure to use an administrator account: I have redirected its talk page to my main one and put on its user page an explanation and {{User alternate acct}}, and on my main user page (second userbox down) I have {{User alternative account name}}. There is a list of similar templates at Wikipedia:Userboxes/Wikipedia/Related accounts. JohnCD (talk) 20:31, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
OK Thanx for all the info I will set everything up once my userpation is over, coz setting up the extra accounts while userpation can confuse the ppl, but then I will do it.

Oton

First, thank you for your close and delete of the Oton article. I just recreated the Oton, Iloilo redirect, but then realized I should probably have at least run it by the closer first (oops). I proposed the redirect in my AfD, and there were no explicit objections to it (I get the sentiment that people just wanted to delete the advertising masquerading as an article). Is the newly created redirect alright? Should I run it by other parties of the AfD discussion? Thank you. -Kai445 (talk) 20:31, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

No, no worries. I was going to say, it would have been better to propose that; but I see you actually did and nobody picked up on it. The redirect is fine, it's a useful one and it was there before the page was hijacked. JohnCD (talk) 20:40, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

Recreating Zoe Tapu

I'm recreating the page Zoe Țapu adding a reference to a prize and more; the lack of this reference (to the prize) was the reason of the consensus for deletion. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Zoe Țapu Scientios (talk) 19:25, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

In closing the AfD I said that the article could be recreated if evidence of notability were provided; I am satisfied that the reference to the prize does that, and as closing admin I confirm that the new article is not a candidate for deletion under WP:CSD#G4. However, I see that doubt has been expressed about the reliability of the cited source, and this should be resolved if possible. JohnCD (talk) 21:52, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Land Rover Tangi

Dear JohnCD,

please accept my apologies - I'm still getting used to Wikipedia and have only just got to grips with Talk pages etc. I have seen your note regarding my additions to the Land Rover Tangi page - specifically the additions of information relating to the Pangolin armoured Land Rover, and the company ovik.

I take your point and apologies for adding links were I shouldn't have. The fact is that - whilst I accept that adding direct links was the incorrect thing to do - I was simply trying to direct the reader to a more fruitful source of information in respect of Pangolin - i.e. the ovik website. Your comments stated that in fact the ovik website doesn't contain info on Pangolin - but in fact it does - a great deal of information in fact. As does the new site www.pangolin-armour.com - what seems to be a spin-off site from the ovik website.

I want to get the CORRECT information up about PANGOLIN - having been deeply involved in the programme of design and build of the vehicle. Pangolin is a natural progression from the Tangi Land Rover and as such - I really think it belongs on the Tangi page. To my mind having a separate page would be unnecessary. Unfortunately, there's been some shenaningans going on recently - with alterations taking place on a daily basis.

The simple facts are that ovik did indeed win the contract and supply the vehicles to PSNI (I have a copy of the original contract to verify that). Whenever I see that the page is altered I try to change it back in the interests of getting the correct info up onto the page - but now it seems that whenever I put the correct information up it is deleted and replaced with erroneous information. I am now being accused of spamming!! NOT ME... I value Wikipedia too much and have donated (only moderate sums I'm afraid) to the upkeep fund whenever I can.

I accept that wikipedia is open to amendment by anyone, but it grieves me to see inaccurate info on the site - info which I KNOW, first-hand, to be incorrect. My reason for writing to you is to hopefully register with you as a genuine wikipedia(n).

Thanks, regards and keep up the good work.

LRF — Preceding unsigned comment added by Landroverfan (talkcontribs) 22:18, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

That was nearly two years ago! I had forgotten all about it. I don't think the Ovik website had any information back then, and the link you gave to it is now a deadlink. My advice is:
  • Wikipedia's WP:Verifiability requirement is for reliable, published sources. Your copy of a contract, and things you "KNOW, first-hand" are not acceptable sources - see WP:No original research. The idea is that a reader should, in principle, be able to check up on whatever we publish by going to the cited source. Editors with expert knowledge are valuable, but that is not because they can post their first-hand knowledge, but because they are likely to know where there are reliable sources.
  • The way Wikipedia works is described at WP:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle - be BOLD and make a change you think will improve the encyclopedia, but if it is then reverted don't make it again, discuss the question on the article talk page and try to reach a WP:Consensus with other users. If you cannot reach a consensus, there are WP:Dispute resolution procedures.
  • What you say implies that you may have a connection with the PANGOLIN programme or with Ovik; in that case, you should be careful - see WP:Conflict of interest and WP:Best practices for editors with conflicts of interest.
So, engage on the talk page and explain what sources you can provide for what you want to add.

LIke brief discussion about Wiki not being a social media spot but still responsible and a Encyclopedia to the current population

I feel that even if you could temporarily use some of the Social Media in Wikipedia from the proper sources. We could just use Social Media things for the time that they are popular and release them when not. The fact that 10% of the average American is following something does not mean that we can deny it simply because it is Social Media.

H.L.Williams III — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lorenzo atl (talkcontribs) 00:47, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

My reference on your talk page to social-networking sites was because you wanted to add pages about your sister and yourself; I was explaining that sites like Myspace and Facebook are there for people to write about themselves and their families, but Wikipedia is trying to do something different, build a general encyclopedia. In order to do that properly, a long list has been worked out over the years of things that Wikipedia is not, and standards (explained at WP:Notability and WP:Notability (people)) to decide what are acceptable subjects. If by "Encyclopedia to the current population" you mean having articles about everybody and anybody, I believe that in the early days there was some idea that could be possible, but it was soon realised that it was not practical, and the notability standards have been arrived at as the result of long discussion. For a site that takes a different approach, you could try WikiBios. JohnCD (talk) 20:31, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
I tried i contacted the site but they are overloaded probably because that are never used. Is there an email for anyone you know that i could get in contact to help with because as far as i know on all of the local media events in Atlanta and Eastern region my sister is the talk of the town and i still believe that it should be noticed even if for a short while then when not as popular erase or edit off. But the be a relevant and possible we have to invite current events. If something happens in america as if 911 we owe it to everyone to at lead add relevant information as accurately and immediately to our Wiki followers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.10.127.80 (talkcontribs) 20:45, 30 March 2013‎
If you mean WikiBios, there is an email address on this page. If you mean Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:Contact us, or there is the WP:New contributors' help page, but you will get the same answer you have already been given by me and at the Teahouse. Sorry, you would like Wikipedia to change its standards so that you can write about yourself and your sister, but that is not going to happen, because it is not what an encyclopedia is for. Bourgeoirazzi

Dear “JohnCD”,

You’ve recently deleted the term "bourgeoirazzi", by labeling it a “G3. Pure vandalism, and blatant hoaxes.”, and we take umbrage at that.

Were you to determine that it was not encyclopoedically entered, then it should rightfully be sent back to a sandbox. If you were seeking references, that would also be a different issue altogether. But to blatantly call it pure vandalism and a hoax is taking it too far, and brings into question your authority to make this pronouncement.

Looking at your bio, it appears that you are now retired, after having lived and worked in the various reaches of the British Commonwealth, but not in the US, and specifically not in Los Angeles, CA.

Based on your background and current residence, it would be logical to assume that: 1. You are not a native or current speaker of American English; 2. You are more familiar with the hard sciences, and all that would entail; 3. You are not familiar with the specific/notional locale commonly known as Hollywood; 4. You do not regularly attend political or social events in Hollywood or the greater Los Angeles area.

Our assumption is that you've never lived or spent a considerable length of time here, and as a result never moved in the circles of, or surrounding, the Industry. (While "industry" means different things in different contexts, in Los Angeles, and especially when capitalized, "Industry" means the motion picture/entertainment industry, and the wide variety of elements that go with it.)

We contend that the above renders you culturally inadequate to make the judgment call that you made.

Bourgeoirazzi describes a real phenomena, and is instantly understood by the listener. It may have humorous overtones and undertones, but that is not cause to discredit it. While its originator and first date of use is unknown to us, we first became aware of it at a permaculture (oh look! Another "made up" word - but that of course applies to every word in every language; see: "John") event. It has since spread from permaculture circles to Burning Man offshoots, "celeb" birthday parties, and activist gatherings.

It is used very much in the same way that "paparazzi" is used, to describe a group of people, when they are engaged in a particular activity.

That's about it. You may not like it, but it's here, and as language is wont to do, it has already claimed a life of its own, despite your attempts at prescription.

Sincerely,

Smnjcfs (talk) 16:40, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

No, I am not familiar with Hollywood or the culture of the movie industry, but fortunately I don't have to be, because Wikipedia works not on the basis of personal knowledge but of WP:Verifiability: "any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source". Since your article cited no sources, I looked to see whether I could find any, but Google turned up nothing. The word is not even in Urban Dictionary, where new slang tends to surface first. So I deleted the article and gave you links on your talk page to two pages, WP:NEO and WP:NFT, which help to explain the reasons.
As you will see from WP:NEO, Wikipedia is quite slow to accept neologisms: because it is not a dictionary, there needs to be evidence not just of the term being used, but also of its use being discussed in reliable secondary sources. If that were the case, there would certainly be references to be found on the Internet.
So, regardless of my personal knowledge or ignorance, this new word Bourgeoirazzi is not yet ready for Wikipedia. You could try it on our sister project Wiktionary but they too have fairly demanding inclusion criteria such as evidence of "use in permanently recorded media, conveying meaning, in at least three independent instances spanning at least a year." Urban Dictionary is your best bet.
If this is really a word you have heard in use, I apologise for calling it a hoax; but the total absence of any trace on the internet made it seem likely that this was yet another of the steady stream of "let's make up a word and see if we can get it into Wikipedia" articles. Compare, for instance, "Permaculture", which returns many Ghits, is clearly an established term, and so has a well-referenced Wikipedia article at Permaculture. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 20:58, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
Thank you, John, for taking the time to explicate further. I do appreciate the work that you do, and I love Wikipedia's mission very much, which didn't come across in my message. Cheers.

Request to undelete some pages

Cantankerous, deleted a couple of years back, is an alias of MC Kinky so I've created a redirect to that page. I'd like to know what used to be there, though.

I'd like to create Kaka Bhaniawala (featured vocalist on Nachna Onda Nei), but again, I'd like to see what's there. Please restore that and move to User:Launchballer/Kaka Bhaniawala. Thank you.--Launchballer 11:07, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

There is nothing in the history of Cantankerous that would help you. It has had three incarnations; (a) a two-liner about a band whose claim to fame was that they wear "women's stockings over their heads and other pieces of lingerie", (b) nonsense vandalism, (c) a redirect to Christopher Elzy, a page which has never existed.
I have userfied Bhaniawala to User:Launchballer/Kaka Bhaniawala. That was a PROD deletion, so it could go straight back to mainspace, but you may as well have it to improve the referencing first. JohnCD (talk) 15:45, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Thank you. I have extended the block and turned off their talk page access. JohnCD (talk) 17:09, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure whether or not this is appropriate or not, but could you move the page history of that to Monyaka? I submitted it a couple of years ago and recently created it. Thank you.--Launchballer 00:52, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

I can do that if you like, but I don't see much point: the idea of merging histories is to record for attribution purposes the contributions of different authors, but if all the IPs who contributed to the AfC version are you, nothing would be gained. JohnCD (talk) 09:42, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
You're right; not a lot would be gained. It seems pointless to have an old AfC up when the article exists, but it seems a waste to delete it, hence my suggestion.--Launchballer 13:43, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

Already done by RHaworth. RfC going nowhere

Sorry to disturb you, but I've tried to reach forge compromise at Talk:Syria regarding the infobox at Syria but it seems it is going nowhere and now it seems the editors are appearing to edit-war, albeit very slowly. a certain user appears to be "using administrators as weapons" to enforce his argument as well. Can you help try and resolve the situation, thanks. --Marianian(talk) 11:17, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but having read that TL;DR talk page I do not see any consensus to change. This does not seem to me a situation where compromise (presumably two, or many, flags) would be an acceptable solution. All that DIREKTOR (who is not an admin) has said is that if edit-warring to change the flag against consensus continues, he will seek outside intervention. My advice would be to drop the stick, but if you are not happy with the result, you could try WP:DRN. JohnCD (talk) 21:30, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

images for undeletion

I put up three images for undeletion last week, and then proceeded to get violently ill, including two days in hospital, and didn't get back to them before they went stale and archived. I did see the single comments left on each, which were not helpful and showed the particular admin not in a mood to listen, which I have encountered before. I saw his name and didn't even need to read the comment before I knew the answer was "no". It seems there's rarely a way to ask for 3O once that admin has weighed in. You and several other admins have dealt fairly with me in the past, and I believe if I brought the images to you to have a look at, with full explanations now that my health is restoring, that you would at least give me a fair hearing. You know I don't bring junk for undeletion, and when told "we looked at it, better start from scratch" or something like that, I thank you and go on my way about it. I don't need to hear what I should have done, I need to hear what's the best way to restore the image that better suits the needs of the Wikipedia. May I at least have your honest view?--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 11:48, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

I'll certainly look at them, but it won't be till tomorrow. JohnCD (talk) 21:30, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
I have restored File:Scouts Canada.svg and restarted the di-fair-use clock, so you have until 11 April to add it to an article. The other two have never been files in en:wp, at least under those names; if they have been deleted, it must have been in Commons. Are you sure you have the names right? JohnCD (talk) 22:09, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
I've got it, I'm going to lay out carefully the process at each talkpage and summarize here. Still fevery so I hope it's not nonsense.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 13:02, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
The image for File:Gerakan Pramuka.png was never at Commons, just here as it should have been all along. I have addressed the replacement and restoration at Talk:Gerakan Pramuka--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 13:25, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
The image for File:Skolta Esperanto Ligo.png was never at Commons, just here. I have addressed the replacement and restoration at Talk:Skolta Esperanto Ligo, as well as a pretty solid argument that it should be at Commons.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 14:08, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
The requests are finished. The images both existed at en:wp, you can look in back history, I promise they _were_ there... :) --Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 03:32, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
OK, both restored and di-fair-use clocks reset. Sorry about that - there is an oddity I have not encountered before: if you put the file name in a sandbox page between [[ ]] to make a redlink and click on it, you just get the upload form with no indication that the file existed before, and that's what I did; but if you put the file name in the search box you get the "You may create the page" message with a redlink which does show the deletion log. Odd. JohnCD (talk) 22:07, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
The same has happened to me, thank you for the workaround and for the reset!--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 10:23, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
The same editor who got Canada deleted in the first place is at it again. Can you drop by the talkpage and add a 3O, or suggest another admin who would be willing to?--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 10:39, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
Turns out he's an admin. I called for 3O as he didn't allow for public debate last time, and I don't wand to be steamrolled again.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 12:49, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

"This user identifies as a Rexist"

Dear John, Thank you for looking at my deletion document. I have put my argument on WP:BELGIUM, I think that it does meet the category for speedy deletion, if one knows what Rexism was. It is certainly not an ideology, it is allegiance to a specific political party. My full argument is here. It is effectively akin to "This user identifies as a Nazi" which I note has not been included in the list of such templates, for obvious reasons. As such, I hope very much that you will reconsider your decision that it does not represent anything offensive. Very best wishes, ---Brigade Piron (talk) 18:07, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

I did not say that it "does not represent anything offensive", but offensive is not enough for a G10 speedy deletion, which is only for:

"Pages that disparage, threaten, intimidate or harass their subject or some other entity, and serve no other purpose (my emphasis). These "attack pages" may include libel, legal threats, material intended purely to harass or intimidate a person or biographical material about a living person that is entirely negative in tone and unsourced."

This userbox declares support for a party which you, and many, will find offensive, but it cannot be argued that it serves no other purpose than to attack someone. It does not qualify for G10 speedy deletion. Take it to WP:MFD where userboxes are often discussed; you can cite WP:UP#POLEMIC and WP:Userboxes#Content restrictions and argue that it is "inflammatory or divisive". JohnCD (talk) 19:24, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Thank you, I have taken your advice here: Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:UNSC Trooper/Userboxes/Rexism. Best wishes, ---Brigade Piron (talk) 07:37, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Framework_Programmes_for_Research_and_Technological_Development

I would like to add there a short description and make a standalone voice of SANDRA.

Best Regards & thanks for your patience

No problem about the delay; I will reply on your talk page, but not until tomorrow. JohnCD (talk) 21:53, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

John CD

I followed your advice and I publish SANDRA with references on the main voice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Framework_Programmes_for_Research_and_Technological_Development

I need support with redirect. Can you please help me? I set SANDRA instruction

  1. REDIRECTFramework Programmes for Research and Technological Development

Or can I go straight to SANDRA description?

Finally I have to edit the SANDRA disambiguation page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandra Or is it automatic?

Best Regards PS. I answered on my talk page about your comment on my revised draft and sorry that I called you Dave. Pixel63 (talk) 16:08, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Self-promotion?

Hi, while doing a random search for illustrators and writers, I came across the Oisin McGann page. I was wondering if this was self-promotion and therefore in violation of Wikipedia policy, as I see some of the edits were done by himself? Thanks. 86.43.104.199 (talk) 12:29, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out. It certainly looks like autobiography, but I don't think it's bad enough to nominate for deletion: it's written in a reasonably neutral tone, and he has probably published enough to scrape past the notability threshold. I have added {{primarysources}} and {{autobiography}} tags. It's hard to blame people who think Wikipedia is another Myspace or LinkedIn, because we don't do anything at account creation time to explain that it is different. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 22:16, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I see your on top of User:L2j2's global contributions. (I was about to post at :es, until I realized that you already had). I think you should also look at [1] as an obvious sockpuppet. (btw: I notified Boing... earlier, before I realized that you are obviously the person to contact, I will tell him of this thread) Sławomir Biały (talk) 23:09, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

The French and Italians have zapped all his contributions. On :es I have started a Spanish AfD for his main article, and alerted the Spanish Mathematics WikiProject; they then speedy-deleted three other articles of his. He has since started another version at es: Modelo de las saetas de Jonatan and I have noted that on the AfD. I don't know what to do about the Haitian versions.
I don't think we need worry about Xsansa - obviously the same guy, and it seems there were other socks then (a note on his French talk page refers to "d'autres de vos comptes"); but that account never edited here and hasn't edited anywhere since 2009. JohnCD (talk) 09:25, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
I figured you had things in hand when I saw your post at es:, but thought it was worthwhile to drop in. Thanks, Sławomir Biały (talk) 21:17, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Moving a file

Thank you! So I gather the answer is: "As you can't do it yourself, the easiest (and only) way to do it is to ask an admin."? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 14:17, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

As well as admins, some others have the WP:File mover permission. There is a {{Rename media}} template you can use to ask for a file to be moved (I only found that out just now, by reading about File movers - you learn something new every day!) JohnCD (talk) 14:36, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Solarstone

Hey John

Hope all is well.

I noticed you deleted the former Solarstone page on Wikipedia due to copyright infringement (related to the biography that is featured on his website).

I am Solarstone's management and looking to set up a new Wikipedia page for him - I will be using elements from his biography as we are the copyright owners. I just would like to confirm this will not be taken down again, or is there a specific reason why this can't be used on Wikipedia?

Thanks in advance for your advice in this matter

User:Itzcoatzin/sandbox

I was told by the help desk that you can provide a pdf from the deleted material.

Jose Luis Zambrano De Santiago (talk) 19:36, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

I have emailed you a copy of the wiki-markup source of the page - you may be able to use that to post it somewhere like Wikia. I have also downloaded it as a .pdf file, just over 11 Mb. The layout is not the same as you see on the screen (pdf downloads are designed for making "Wikibooks", I think) but it looks as though the information is there. The Wikipedia email system does not allow sending attachments, so you will have to let me know your email address. If you reply to my first email, that will give it to me, and then I will forward the pdf. JohnCD (talk) 21:53, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for reply

I understand sockpupptry and it is probably right as the articles creator, one saved, one deleted, does seem to know the subjects personally, and some of the delete proposers seem to have suddenly become active again, but to follow to other articles and start deleting external links such as IMDb which I have restored on articles on my watchlist. I.ve not bothered with all the other articles as I expect their watchers will do it as they already have in some cases. But the editor seems to revel in deleting and his talk page is a war zone but then I am an inclusionist. Thanks again.REVUpminster (talk) 22:51, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

That's a long list of references, but many of them do not actually mention her, and some of those that do are evidently press releases. Only those that are actually about her, independent, and in some depth, count towards Wikipedia's quite demanding definition of WP:Notability; and in the deletion discussion four experienced users were unanimous. If you want to appeal against that, you can make your case at WP:Deletion review; read the instructions at the top of that page first, and ask me if you need any help in making an entry there.
A better idea, suggested by one of the contributors, would be to make an article about the school. It is more likely that you could establish notability for that, and Ms Berenson could be mentioned in that article and have a WP:REDIRECT from her name linking to it. If you decide to do that, read the the WP:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide first, and take great care to write in a neutral and factual tone: Wikipedia is very resistant to being used for any kind of promotion. There is good advice in the guide to writing WP:Your first article. JohnCD (talk) 22:17, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Iyad Burnat

hi john,

i see you re-added the afd tag to Iyad Burnat. thanks. but the anon IP has been harassing that page for days now, and in your edit, his vandalism stayed. so, i reverted your edit and his, back to my last version, which has the correct afd tag. can you semi-protect the page? and, as i said in my edit summary, if this is considered a violation of 1RR, i will happily self-revert. thanks. Soosim (talk) 13:09, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

I see that another editor has restored the material you removed, and it does not seem to me to be vandalism, so please treat this as a content dispute - discuss on the talk page if you think it should be removed again. Actual vandalism seems to have died down now, and I am reluctant to semi-protect an article which is going to AfD - make a request at WP:RFPP if it re-starts. Deletion of Important Pages

Mr. JohnCD, Will you please tell me why you have deleted 3 major pages named

  1. Dr. Viney Pushkarna
  2. Pushkarna Research Association for Natural Aid
  3. Amar Shaheed Pandit Lekhram

all three were very important from which

  • Dr. Viney Pushkarna is first Naturopathic Practitioner who get awarded three times by govt. to expand out the natural cure and the a poet who wrote 117 poems those were awarded as Bhartiya Dharohar.
  • Pushkarna Research Association for Natural Aid is one of top ten health unite serving in north India and registered by Government and First association who is awarded as online yoga community. founded By Dr. Viney Pushkarna.
  • Amar Shaheed Pandit lekhram ji was the martyr of Qadian who was a Arya Samaji killed by anti Hindu community.

You guys trying to promote islaam in Quadian not other persons and the amazing work that they did for Nation. I conclude that you are a racist who might be funded by those communities. Shame on you. With your this view and pattern I will appeal to my all friends and mates those donate to wikipedia last year will never do that again.

For the first two, I explained the reasons on the talk page of user RPania (talk), the articles' author: they did not explain why the subjects were important or significant enough to have an article. Because it is an encyclopedia, Wikipedia is quite selective about subjects for articles. In order to be kept, an article must show Wikipedia:Notability, which is not matter of saying so, but has to be demonstrated by references showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject."
There has never been an article Amar Shaheed Pandit Lekhram - might the spelling have been different? There was an article Pandit Lekhram which was deleted by another administrator. It contained only a single sentence: "Pandit Lekhram was a follower of Maharishi Dayanand". Once again, that does not explain why he is important enough to have an encyclopedia article.
You are welcome to write articles about any of these, if you can show that they are notable. If you do not already have a Wikipedia account, you can register one, which is easy and free, or you can use WP:Articles for creation. Read the guide to writing WP:Your first article before you start.
Please note that two important principles here are WP:Civility and WP:Assume good faith. Accusing people of racism and of being paid by opponents will not help your case; and giving donations or threatening not to give them will have absolutely no influence on the content of Wikipedia. Yes, he's right: you created it as a "File" (which, in Wikipedia terms, means an image) but it was actually wiki-markup text, not an image. A file can't be moved to a non-file name, so I have cut-and-pasted it to User:Elvey/HMG IS2 Full Accreditation Statement, taking the "jpg" off the end as it is not an image. minor nudge regarding the Bruce Gerencser matter

John!

Thanks for taking care of the matter on the REFUND (or, ultimately, lack thereof) of Bruce Gerencser. In the clean-up afterward, I have a small request. In your post at User_talk:Kengilmour#Bruce_Gerencser, you twice accidentally used by name (Gertler) where I assume you meant "Gerencser" ("a request at WP:REFUND#Bruce Gertler"; "The article reads like Mr Gertler trying to use Wikipedia as an extension of his blog to complain about all the people he thinks have treated him badly."). It's an understandable error, but unfortunately this creates the sense that I had some sort of COI in this case. Even though this is some WP:SPA's talk page that no one else is ever likely to look at, I'd prefer if it were not sitting there in that form. Could you possibly correct your message?)

If I'm misreading this situation and you really do think I have a COI, let me know. I assure you that I have no such conflict, never heard of the guy before doing some new page patrolling the other day, and my central action in this -- marking the article for speedy - wouldn't be consistent with a COI. But if you need more convincing, we'll talk. --Nat Gertler (talk) 14:00, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Corrected - no, I meant no implication that you had a COI, it was just a careless slip. I proof-read it twice, too, once in my sandbox and again on the page. Apologies, and thanks for being helpful to this newbie. JohnCD (talk) 14:16, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for fixing that! --Nat Gertler (talk) 18:41, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Wilf or Alf

Nice one - I was searching through my contribs because I knew I'd seen the little beggar before. As to the reptiles, that was quite a demolition job that was done on the dragon. I'm sure that 'lisard' is a hoax - but it's hard to prove it. The 'artist' or biologist who drew it only appears in connection with it, and I'm damn sure I'd have heard of a critter as odd as that. (And so would Attenborough et al...) Peridon (talk) 17:38, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

For Wilf/Alf see here. It seems to be a pair of seven-year-olds, at least nine accounts since 25 Mar. It ought to be possible to locate their parents; I might try a message on the latest one's talk page to threaten that. Squeakinge Lisard - I think there probably was some traveller's account that used the term, but I think I shall !vote delete as not having good enough sourcing for WP:N or WP:V. For another recent hoax, see this guy's attempt to give himself royal ancestry by inventing George I, King of Guernsey. It's all go! JohnCD (talk) 17:58, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Hmm. Could fool Americans who don't understand the relationships of the UK, IoM and CI, and there technically was a Duke George I (of Hanover, of course), I suppose. Otherwise, a right load of old shoe repairers. It's been a bit of a time for hoaxes, with another Polllilur sock appearing, and one that got a spread in the Metro (but for its general ramifications, not our negligence). Marianocecowski spotted it and I killed it. User talk:Kevin J Ashton Good job, or the Metro wouldn't have called it 'defunct'. (He must be one of our longest serving admins, and I hadn't come across him before.) I'm keeping the Metro - first time something I've deleted has got into the press... Peridon (talk) 18:23, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
The article isn't a hoax, but you might find Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Quantonics a challenge. Peridon (talk) 18:35, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Quantonics: !voted delete, quoting my favourite sentence from WP:NOR. Wilf/Alf: I removed one para of your reply, because I don't think we should give the names of his friends. I have found six more socks and tried this warning on his latest user-page to see if that will make him stop. Guernsey: it's interesting what you learn as a by-product of chasing hoaxes: Guernsey was never a Duchy of its own, it was originally part of the Duchy of Normandy which got left out when the rest was absorbed by France, and the Queen's official title there is still "Duke of Normandy" as successor of William the Conqueror. A question about an "Articles for Creation" entry

As you were the admin who closed Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Itzcoatzin/sandbox, I'd like your opinion on Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Fortun(o) Sanchez (Sangiz) Grandee Zambrana. This is essentially the same article that was in the sandbox which you deleted. After five separate requests for review, the author was told the develop the article in their sandbox to see if anything could be made of it. As the MFD determined, nothing could be made of it. At this point, is there any point in retaining the AFC submission? (Do failed AFC submissions ever get deleted?) WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 14:30, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

There isn't a clear policy on what to do with rejected AfC drafts, but there is a discussion ongoing at WT:CSD#G13 - The discussion for the official criterion about a speedy for old ones, and the consensus emerging seems to be that they should be left for six months, so it's too soon to do anything about this one yet. JohnCD (talk) 19:36, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. Oddly enough, I was not even aware there was a criterion for abandoned AFC drafts. Live and learn. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 20:23, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Deleting user sub-pages

Hi John! Some time ago, I had a few deleted articles on Mongolian bands restored to my user space. I restored them later, so I don't need them in my userspace any longer. (I just stumbled over the deletion discussion at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Miscellany_for_deletion/User:%E8%99%9E%E6%B5%B7/Menksoft_Mongolian_IMEs which indicated that such pages should not be retained. I presume the pages you meant were User:G Purevdorj/Nomin talst and User:G Purevdorj/Dain Ba Enkh, so I have deleted those. It is better not to have parallel copies, in case they both get edited and the history gets confused. Another time, you can put {{db-user}} at the top to request deletion. Robert Jaybias Cook, Jr

I noted that you blocked Wilfred Cook (talk · contribs) as a sockpuppet of The Deadly TV series (talk · contribs) after the creation of an article very similar to Robert Jaybias Cook Jr Films. (In the prior case, the article was Wilfred Cook's Filmography.) There is not an open SPI against "The Deadly TV series" so I'm not sure how the puppetry was uncovered, but perhaps you can address the new issue using the same avenue. Or should I just open an SPI for this case? I have notified JamesBWatson (talk · contribs) as well, as the admin who deleted the Cook article. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 17:15, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks - replied on JBW's talk page. This one is a pain, 19 socks and counting... I've opened an SPI. JohnCD (talk) 20:46, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Enquiry: Semi-protecting user pages

Following my unsuccessful involvement in the Syrian infobox issue it appears people are starting to vandalise my user page, like what happened at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Marianian&action=history (culprit: 117.234.77.86). Two questions: number one: how do I semi-protect my user page to keep out IP vandals? Number two: how does one remove vandal revisions? Thank you. --Marianian(talk) 12:27, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

I have semi-protected your user page (the normal place to ask would be WP:Requests for page protection). You have removed the vandalism from view by reverting it; it is still lurking in the history, but the only way to hide it there would be revision deletion, and I do not think it is bad enough to need that: REVDEL is intended only for grossly offensive material, and the policy says that it "does not exist to remove "ordinary" offensive comments and incivility". There is much worse in the history of my talk page! JohnCD (talk) 15:33, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

hello sir/ you have delated my page named aprjc venkatagiri. there is nothing fake or wrong in that page. please approve my page. aprjc venkatagiri is not a money minded institution to advertise. it is a gov.t college giving free an qualitative education. please approve my page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bhanu971 (talkcontribs) 10:57, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

What you wrote was much too promotional: "prestigious... high standard... excellent faculty... " etc. Wikipedia requires a neutral point of view and anything that reads like an advertisement is deleted. More advice on your talk page tomorrow. JohnCD (talk) 21:07, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Regarding 'vandalism' block

I noticed that an editor, with the user name ENRYCH, has been blocked from editing because he added the information to Graeme Garden's page that Graeme is a patron of ENRYCH. I checked out the ENRYCH website and discovered that Graeme Garden is, in actual fact, a patron of ENRYCH and has been patron since 2010.

Because of what I discovered, I have reverted back to user ENRYCH's comment about this, on Graeme Garden's page, and have added a reference regarding it. Figaro (talk) 12:17, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

I blocked ENRYCH (talk · contribs) not for vandalism but as a role account - we don't allow organizations to have accounts. I used {{uw-causeblock}} which invites them to set up an individual account, but links WP:COI and warns that Wikipedia is not to be used for promotion, even of "good causes".
I would also have reverted ENRYCH's edit, but as "spam" not as "test/vandalism". I don't really approve of charities levering themselves into articles about celebrities who support them, but as you have reinstated them I won't edit-war about it. JohnCD (talk) 15:01, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Re. this, I think it is sometimes worth checking the filter log in these situations. Since that user had attempted to insert vandalism multiple times by that point (despite being unsuccessful), I decided to block as {{vaublock}}. I hope you agree with the block. It Is Me Here t / c 17:57, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

You're absolutely right, I should have thought to check that. Cheers, JohnCD (talk) 19:32, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Proposed deletion

Notify author/project: == Proposed deletion of Los Teke Teke ==

The article Los Teke Teke has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

no sign or source of notability. Poorly written. Not encyclopedic. WP:Fart

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. 7&6=thirteen () 19:54, 28 April 2013 (UTC) Timestamp: 20130428194656 19:46, 28 April 2013 (UTC) 7&6=thirteen () 19:54, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Bionic Jive Wiki Page has been Deleted

Link title Who ever deleted Bionic Jive page needs to tell me how to put it back.

The article Bionic Jive was deleted by a process called proposed deletion, used when deletion is considered likely to be uncontroversial. Pages deleted in this way are automatically restored on request, so I have undeleted it; but I will notify user Starblind (talk) who proposed it, and who may choose to nominate it at WP:Articles for deletion, which would start a debate lasting seven days to which you would be welcome to contribute. The question is whether the band meets the Wikipedia:Notability requirement explained at WP:BAND, which needs to be demonstrated by reference to "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject."
Wikipedia is not a site like Myspace or Facebook for people to write about themselves or their own bands: as part of their team you have, from Wikipedia's point of view, a Wikipedia:Conflict of interest in respect of the band, and should read the Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. yeah, I agree....the little dot is hard to notice..even for experienced ones..there is a lot of discussion going on at Wikipedia talk:Notifications about the orange bar of doom..many users have expressed concern about the orange bar not getting displayed.. Cheers, TheStrikeΣagle 11:29, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
Worse still, IPs now get no notification at all of talk page messages! This is a disaster. JohnCD (talk) 11:39, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
Until now the orange bar atleast slowed down most of the vandals from further damaging the website..but I am afraid.....it won't be able to....they would not even know that they were warned...this could lead to potential loss of reformed vandals who would stop vandalizing after a level 1 or 2 warning.. The orange bar is back for IPs - I've just tried it. JohnCD editing as 79.69.227.152 (talk) 17:58, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Marathonbet

Hi John, thanks for userfying my Marathonbet page. I have edited the copy, and deleted all superlatives to erase suspicion of advertising/spam. You requested that I get NawlinsWiki to read through it (the editor that deleted my first attempt) I have tried to leave him/her a message on their talk page, but there doesn't seem to be a button to allow me to do so. The last thing I want to do is submit and go through the undeletion/edit process again. I appreciate your help. Many thanks, Shaun. Shaunsimmonds (talk) 15:22, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

I think you were probably trying to post on his user page User:NawlinWiki, which is protected because of vandalism. The page you want is his talk page, User talk:NawlinWiki, and that is not protected. JohnCD (talk) 16:25, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Margaretwmiller's sandbox

Hi JohnCD! Just a quick question – If Ms. Miller moves her sandbox article into Mainspace as you suggested, won't her entire sandbox history move with it? – PAINE ELLSWORTH CLIMAX! 19:49, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Yes, it will, but all there is in the history is the development of that article, apart from the earliest two revisions which are redirects left over from a previous article being moved away. I don't think they matter, and it's better for new users to get used to doing moves rather than cut-and-paste, which can be problematic if more than one user has contributed, because attribution gets lost. I have also told her how to use Help:Userspace draft to make a new draft page for each article, which is a rather tidier approach. JohnCD (talk) 20:13, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Gearoid O'Meara

Dear Sir, My article made for Gearoid O'Meara was nominated for speedy deletion and I fully see why however I was unfinished and I see only now that there are facilities to create a draft before publishing it. Is there any chance I would bet the text back sometime please so I can work on my article more before publishing it? Thank you for your time, Regards. Petelono63 (talk) 19:55, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

I have restored it to User:Petelono63/Gearóid O'Meara and will give some advice on your talk page, maybe not till tomorrow. The system that should warn you you have a message may be out of action, so look for a small blob beside your username on the top line of the screen, or just click "Talk" on the top line of the screen to see if there is a message. Please bring back TGen Drug Development

Hi John

I would like to bring the page back to preserve the integrity of what work has gone on there. They are a separate company now, with a different name. But that doesn't reflect the things that they have done, such as being an integral part in determining the standard care for prostate cancer. http://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT01298011 if you look at the investigator he is of this organization. This is just a portion of the edits I would like to make for this non profit company and their research.

I am also confused on what constitutes an ad versus information, it seems to me that 90% of wikipedia is an add for something rather than the work and accomplishments. Even with these accomplishments by this company it's funny that paclitaxel (abraxane) is able to have it's own page when it is a product and it is masked behind a chemistry narrative. you realize paclitaxel sold 1 billion dollars last year. With many patients coming to wiki to find out information to appeal to their cancer doctors to use paclitaxel. How sports teams can create wiki pages even though they are a product and an entertainment service, another billion dollar industry. I am merely trying to highlight the work in the cancer field by the formerly non profit group.

Kinetica Art Fair

I note your undelete remarks. If you Google Kinetica Art Fair you will find thousands of references to the Art Fair. I would think that the Art Fair is of interest to many people due to its subject matter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kw1330 (talkcontribs) 15:55, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

The article referenced only the fair's own website and the parent museum's. Wikipedia's inclusion criterion is called Wikipedia:Notability and is not a matter of saying so but needs to be demonstrated by references showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." See WP:Notability (summary) for what that means. If you can do that, you are welcome to submit another article, but I suggest you read Wikipedia:Your first article first, and then click on Help:Userspace draft and fill in the title, which will make a draft page where you can work on the article. JohnCD (talk) 16:59, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

I just wrote on Aervanath's talk page and spotted the note atop the page;

could you fulfill my request in his incapacity? I'd like the revisions of Kisstory undeleted so I can see if there is anything I've missed. If there isn't, move my page there. Thank you.--Launchballer 14:29, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

No, there's nothing relevant in that - it was rambling, unsourced, fancruft about Kiss (band). You can write your article at that title, no problems. JohnCD (talk) 14:47, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
A book with that name was heralded the Kiss bible - it probably refers to that. Now, I'd like your opinion on something; Kisstory used to be a radio program, but is now a station broadcasting the same content. Do I create Category:Defunct radio programs, add Category:Radio stations or simply leave Category:Radio stations on its own?--Launchballer 14:53, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
Up to you, but I would be inclined not to invent "Category:Defunct radio programs" (though I'm sure there are plenty) unless you reckon it will be useful enough that many people will use it. Since your article does mention the radio program, you could add also it to whichever of these radio program categories you thought most appropriate. JohnCD (talk) 21:09, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Biggest problem I see is that Wikipedia is not a dictionary. --| Uncle Milty | talk | 21:25, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
I'm afraid it sounds as though, considering WP:NOR and WP:NEO, it may be too soon for this one. Wikipedia is absolutely not here to help establish new terms so that other sites will recognise them. It works exactly the other way round: an encyclopedia doesn't report things until it can summarise what other established reliable sources say about them. JohnCD (talk) 21:32, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

I thought to create the article and it seems it was created 4 times each time deleted either for copyright or notability problems the last time by you. I ran a Google scholar search and it seems it is difficult to establish notability of the article. Can the article be made regardless of his academic notability (Many claim he is the Indian equivalent of John Forbes Nash, Jr). Solomon7968 (talk) 22:06, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

As per his academic is concerned he is from Indian Statistical Institute and is a student of John L. Kelley. Solomon7968 (talk) 22:08, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, no time tonight, I will reply tomorrow. JohnCD (talk) 22:16, 9 May 2013 (UTC)
You may certainly try to make an article, but a lot will depend on what sources you can find. I read claims that he is India's John Forbes Nash, challenged Einstein, etc, but claims like that need good sources. The challenge for you is the Wikipedia:Verifiability policy: "all quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source."
At a quick look, all the sources I see seem to be variations on the same narrative, like this and this and this, and the deleted Wikipedia articles were basically the same material. That is a sad, but not uncommon, story of a good mathematician who suffered a mental breakdown, but I do not see notability there, in Wikipedia's sense, nor is it clear what is the original source of the material and how reliable it is.
Although there it is claimed that he was a genius, there are no actual facts about achievements that would pass the notability standard of WP:PROF, even if they were sourced. This confirms that he did a PhD under Kelley at California, but there are many PhDs. So you are back to the WP:GNG: can you find references that show "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject"?
If you can find sources to show notability, by all means write an article. It might be best to start with a userspace draft (click on Help:Userspace draft to start). You may be able to get help from WP:WikiProject Mathematics. JohnCD (talk) 22:11, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
I am currently busy at other articles so probably I will not make the article very soon but do keep a eye if a page is created on his name. There is a facebook account named Ami Hindu who is flooding Indian Users on facebook with the name of V.N Singh. I suspect there will be numerous attempts to make a page. Solomon7968 (talk) 14:18, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
I have watchlisted the name. If another unsatisfactory article is created, the title will probably be salted to prevent re-creation. Those texts read as though someone is making a campaign to get the government to pay for medical treatment, but Wikipedia cannot help with that. JohnCD (talk) 14:38, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Actually, since 2006 the page has been simply a redirect to Jason Saffer, but that page was recently deleted after a discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jason Saffer. As you will see, that was quite a narrow decision, so if you can provide a reference to more substantial independent coverage, you can ask the deleting administrator, user Qwyrxian (talk) to consider undeleting it. Please read the WP:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide, though. JohnCD (talk) 22:00, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
Yes, as JohnCD says, all you really need is one more source that discusses Saffer a a bit, and the Jason Saffer article could easily be restored. If you have such a source, let me know and I'll be happy to help you recreate it. Qwyrxian (talk) 06:57, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned talk pages are liable to be automatically deleted. If you want to create Wikipedia articles, you need to register an account, which is easy and free. Alternatively, you can use WP:Articles for creation. Whether there can be an article about the Meameamealokkapoowa depends on whether other people have taken it seriously and commented on it, because of the inclusion criterion called Wikipedia:Notability which requires references that show "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." If it is just something that Bowers has invented and put on googology.wikia.com, it probably wouldn't qualify, for reasons explained at Wikipedia is not for things made up one day. JohnCD (talk) 14:33, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

I create so much of a mess creating and moving stuff out of my userspace

I'm starting to feel a bit guilty that I'm making so much mess and asking others to effectively 'clean up' after me. If I was to set up an RfA, so I could move a page without leaving a redirect, how likely would you be to support it?--Launchballer 08:51, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

No, sorry, I do not think you have enough experience. The community does not give out the tools for special reasons like that: someone recently started an RFA because he wanted to read deleted documents for an arbitration case, and the idea was not well received. While there are no formal edit-count requirements, this chart will give you an idea, and WP:GRFA is the general guide. Don't worry about leaving clean-up U1s: U1 deletions are a very small part of the overall load, and are easy for the admin because he doesn't have to think, just check that the requester is the page owner. JohnCD (talk) 12:13, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

Ha ha

Sorry about that one. I hit save, it loaded the AfD with the article title red-linked and I realised you were in the processing of deleting/closing. So I posted my subsequent oops which then loaded after your close. Anyway, good deletion, good close, good revert. Cheers! Stalwart111 10:14, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of Demet Çetindoğan

Hi,

The page for the person you deleted is actually the 88th richest person in Turkey with contributions to IT and fashion industry. There are much less important people from Turkey who are included in Wikipedia.

Can you please re-consider your decision?

Best regards, Tony Yustein Yustein (talk) 22:46, 16 May 2013 (UTC)yustein About Forbes list of 2013 the 100 richest people in Turkey please check http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/english/finance/11117628.asp

Done, but just being in a rich-list is not enough to have an article. If this is to be kept, you need to add references showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject" to etsablish WP:Notability, see also WP:Notability (summary). JohnCD (talk) 11:17, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Steve DiFillippo

Ok, so I get it, but here's the deal, I'm working for him and that's the copy he gave me to use. Are you still going to kill it even if I re-word the material? It's the same bio he gives for everything. Also, before you killed it was it at least spammy? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Evolver1977 (talkcontribs) 20:20, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

I can well believe it's the same bio he posts everywhere, but what he and you have not understood is that Wikipedia is not another Myspace/Facebook-type free platform for self-promotion. It's quite different, a project to build an encyclopedia, and is absolutely not for any kind of advertising or promotion. Any PR-speak fluff like "the consummate restaurateur... pursue his dream... garnered rave reviews... " etc. is deleted at sight, and people are strongly discouraged from writing about themselves or their employers. I will give you some more advice tomorrow, but start by reading the WP:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. JohnCD (talk) 21:11, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Please restore article on lightning memory mapped database

Hi JohnCD,

I did not submit the article for Lightning memory mapped database, but I do not understand why it was deleted. It certainly seems very premature to me, and there was definitely a conflict of interest from the individual who complained (Oracle, who is most directly affected by LMDB's existence).

I was hoping to add some more references about LMDB to the existing wikipedia article.

http://www.anchor.com.au/blog/2013/05/second-strike-with-lightning/ http://mishikal.wordpress.com/2013/05/16/openldap-a-comparison-of-back-mdb-and-back-hdb-performance/

The fact remains it is just a valid of a database as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BerkeleyDB if a page for one exists, a page for the other should exist as well.

Thanks!

(talk page stalker)Blogs, especially your own, not deemed WP:RS... WP neither, as it goes... Basket Feudalist 16:09, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
That article was deleted after a deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lightning Memory-Mapped Database. The criterion for having a Wikipedia article is called WP:Notability, and is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." See WP:Notability (summary) for how that is interpreted.
After the deletion, the article author ThurnerRupert (talk) asked me to "userfy" the article - move it into his user space where he could work on it. I did that on 1 May, so it is now at User:ThurnerRupert/Lightning Memory-Mapped Database, but he has not done anything to it since. You can work on it there, or if he agrees I can move it into your user space, but talk to him first.
What it needs is more references that show discussion of the subject by independent reliable sources. Blogs do not generally count as reliable. When it is ready, you have first to convince me, as the administrator who closed the deletion discussion, that you have overcome the reasons for deletion. If I am not convinced, I may agree to relist for another discussion; failing that, you can appeal at WP:Deletion review. More advice on your talk page soon. JohnCD (talk) 19:51, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
i do not mind if other people edit my user space in a productive way. as the one who missed the information originally on wikipedia, and the one who wrote the article, i think it is not well referenced yet. so i thought it might be wise to wait a little how lmdb gets included in other software. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 21:13, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Just fyi, I removed the PROD BLP tag because the page has references. Uberaccount (talk) 20:07, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

That's fine, the article author added the ref after I put the PROD-blp on - though I see someone else has since deleted the article as promotional! JohnCD (talk) 22:14, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Return of an old acquaintance

Hello, long time no speak. Regarding the subject of this community ban: I came across this Burton-related article by chance, and recognised the style... Oh, dear, yes, it's him again. At a first look, though you found inaccuracies in that article, it was not the sort of wild fiction he used to produce. It is just possible that he has grown up and we could leave him - watch carefully but not block at once. I'm out of time tonight - I'll look at what he has been up to in more detail tomorrow. Thanks! I'm just trying to word a message to say that if he wants to be a serious contributor (and he does show some signs of that) he won't get anywhere by socking, he needs to request an unblock in a way that shows he understands why he was blocked and won't continue that behaviour. Perhaps the WP:Standard offer might be appropriate. JohnCD (talk) 09:38, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the message, James. When I saw it, I was actually writing a message to you. You are quite right that if you just carry on creating new sockpuppets you will be fighting a losing battle: you have been formally site-banned, so that any new accounts will be blocked at sight, and any contributions deleted.
However, I see that you have been making some serious contributions, and if you would like to become a constructive contributor there is a possible way back: read the WP:Standard offer. If you stay away completely from Wikipedia for six months, and then make an unblock request, (on the JAT6634 account if you still have its password, or if not on any of the others) and let me know, I would be prepared to start the discussion at the WP:ANI noticeboard which would be necessary to undo the site ban.
Your request (see WP:GAB) would need to make clear that you understood you could not go on using WP as a web-host for your fantasy articles, that you wanted to become a constructive contributor, and that you would use only one account. You could be back in time to redo 2013-14 Burton Albion F.C. season. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 22:00, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

You can tell him that just being published is not enough to have a Wikipedia article - see WP:Notability (books)#Criteria. JohnCD (talk) 22:01, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi John. You've closed Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Hirohisat/Earth Cabal (2nd nomination) four days early. There was also a previous MfD at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Hirohisat/Earth Cabal that was closed as "no consensus", so this probably shouldn't be closed early. I think the date in the MfD log was incorrect because the first timestamp in the MfD was "04:00, 22 April 2013 (UTC)" from one of my nomination statement's quotes. I apologize for not putting a "23:04, 18 May 2013 (UTC)" timestamp at the top of the page. Would you undo your close and put a "23:04, 18 May 2013 (UTC)" timestamp on top of the page so the discussion can run for the full seven days? Thank you, Cunard (talk) 23:18, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Done. Sorry about that, I was misled because it was still lurking under 22 April. I have unclosed it and moved it up the MfD log page so that it appears under 18 May. JohnCD (talk) 09:34, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

I might have broken something, sorry

I'm an intern with Twin Cities Public Television (tpt) and I'm new to wikipedia (just made an account). I'm helping with research and was trying to update an article on Brad Peterson with a reference from when he was interviewed on WGN News and I must have done something because now it's gone. I'm not even sure if this is how to tell you. Sorry. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MinStarTrib (talkcontribs) 16:39, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

No, you haven't broken anything, and this is the right place to leave me a message, but you should add new messages at the bottom, so I have moved this down. An easy way to put a new message in the right place is to click "New section" and fill in the form it produces.
The article on Brad Peterson is gone because I deleted it, and I explained the reason on your talk page at User talk:MinStarTrib. If you see an orange block at the top of the screen that says "Talk: new messages", that is telling you that you have a new message, and clicking on the bar, or on the word "Talk" on the top line beside your username, will take you there. Jordan Serlin

Hi John,

Thank you for responding. From my understanding there were a number of references listed which included articles written for the Street.com, media coverage where I was interviewed, public information from the SEC, and mentions from BusinessWeek, etc. Is this not enough? Again I am just interested in seeing if the page can be undeleted, or if I may be able to edit it and resubmit it in some way? Thanks.

Deletion of Christian Billboard (June 1,2013)

Would it be a good page if I added the references from the billboard website, [1], that way it is not a copyright violation, Sincerely, Candygarret (talk) 18:26, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

No, sorry, it would still be a copyright violation even if you attributed it. WP:Quotations#Copyrighted material and fair use explains that only brief extracts for illustrative purposes are permissible: "Extensive quotation of copyrighted text is prohibited.". To understand why, look at it from Billboard's point of view: they do the work to compile these charts, and they get their money from advertisers who pay them according to the number of people who visit their site. If you copy their results into Wikipedia, even if you attribute them, people can read them here and never go to the Billboard site. JohnCD (talk) 21:03, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

ok, I understand, the only reason I wanted to do it is because I wanted to sort the information in a sortable, where you can sort the artist name and weeks on chart, since the billboard site doesn't do that. It would be okay then to keep the code for the page on my computer, and copy it into the sandbox and click show preview but don't save the changes, that way just I can see it, right? Thanks, Candygarret (talk) 21:15, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Yes, no problem with that. Cheers, JohnCD (talk) 21:35, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Hotmobile

10:47, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

Dear Sir, Dear John,

My name is Mathieu France. I am the manager of the company Hotmobile sprl, both in Belgium. We also opened an office in California, since 15th of April. I am there to make this a success.

On 26 may, you deleted the page Hotmobile.

I do agree that the second part of the article was about what we were preparing, as a company, but our website is now live (since May 25th, by the way). You can check this at www.hotmobile.com

What is more, the "banque carrefour des entreprises" link that i mentionned in the article is a (very) reliable Third party source. It is a state run database that, in Belgium, only publishes the official registred companies (and you need to spend quite a bit of time and money to set up such a company as Hotmobile sprl).

Last, but not least, I do not understand why i am being blamed to write an article in English while i am a French & Dutch native speaker. Anyway, that must have to do with the Wikipedia policies, but in my case it is very logical: I speak the 3 languages, and Hotmobile (.com) is a company focused towards english speaking people. So it is only logical that the article was written in English.

As a consequence, i would really appreciate if you could reverse the deletion of the article.

Yes, there is still the fact that i am the first contributor and at the same time the owner of Hotmobile. I have never hidden this. At the same time, in the future, i should only mention facts and not things like "The company is preparing a web app". I should only post things like "The Web App of the company is accessible at www.Hotmobile.com ", and only once accessible.

Thanks in avance for your reaction,

Mathieu France [email protected]

Invitation to look at edits on IQ reference chart

I see the article IQ reference chart has been tagged for expert review since October 2012. As part of a process of drafting a revision of that article in my user sandbox, I am contacting all Wikipedians who have edited that article since early 2009 for whom I can find a user talk page.

I have read all the diffs of all the edits committed to the article since the beginning of 2009 (since before I started editing Wikipedia). I see the great majority of edits over that span have been vandalism (often by I.P. editors, presumably teenagers, inserting the names of their classmates in charts of IQ classifications) and reversions of vandalism (sometimes automatically by ClueBot). Just a few editors have referred to and cited published reliable sources on the topic of IQ classification. It is dismaying to see that the number of reliable sources cited in the article has actually declined over the last few years. To help the process of finding reliable sources for articles on psychology and related topics, I have been compiling a source list on intelligence since I became a Wikipedian in 2010, and I invite you to make use of those sources as you revise articles on Wikipedia and to suggest further sources for the source on the talk pages of the source list and its subpages. Because the IQ reference chart article has been tagged as needing expert attention for more than half a year, I have opened discussion on the article's talk page about how to fix the article, and I welcome you to join the discussion. The draft I have in my user sandbox shows my current thinking about a reader-friendly, well sourced way to update and improve the article. I invite your comments and especially your suggestions of reliable sources as the updating process proceeds. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 20:36, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for the invitation. I will look at it, but I have no particular interest or expertise here - my only edit to the article was a vandalism revert. JohnCD (talk) 21:54, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

Diamond Pet Foods Page Deletion

Dear John,

Hello, my name is Danielle Smith and I work with Diamond Pet Foods Inc. Today I went to find the Diamond Pet Foods page and it has been deleted. I read everything that you have posted about why it might have been deleted. I was hoping you could tell me which of the 4 reasons why this page has been deleted. Since I did not create the page, I am unaware of why it might have been deleted. At your earliest convenience, can you please let me know why this page was deleted and what we could possibly do to get the page back up?

I really appreciate your help.

Out of the list on my advice page, the reason was Non-encyclopedic pages. The point is that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a business listing directory or a place for people or companies to write about themselves, and so is quite selective about subjects for articles. The inclusion criterion is called Wikipedia:Notability, and is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by references showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." The test is, have other people, not connected with the subject, thought it significant enough to write substantial content about? More detail in Notability (organizations and companies) and WP:Notability (summary). That is quite a demanding test, and many worthy organizations cannot meet it: that is not to their discredit, but means that they are not suitable subjects for a global encyclopedia.
This was not a speedy deletion: the question was discussed in a deletion debate at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Diamond Pet Foods and, as you can see, all of the users who took part agreed that this was not a suitable subject.
For more advice, read the FAQ/Organizations, in particular the sections headed:

He did not revert my edits, which were simply to make the talk page catch up with the article; now talk and article are both at Afro-Dominican (Dominican Republic). What he has done now is post a Proposed Deletion template; he has posted it in the wrong place, but in any case it would not take effect for seven days, and in the meantime anyone could remove it. I have no more time tonight, but tomorrow I will tell him that if he thinks the article should be deleted, he should take it to AfD. JohnCD (talk) 22:09, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Creating a wikipedia page for Problemio.com

Hi John,

My understanding was that a business needs to have been mentioned in 3 reputable publications in order to qualify for having a wikipedia page, is that correct?

My business has been mentioned on Yahoo Finance, Business Insider, and 24.com which is South Africa's biggest news site.

What are my requirements to have a page made for my business? Thank you, Alex Genadinik [email protected] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.231.16.41 (talk) 14:23, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

You need more than just mentions - see WP:Notability (summary). Also, Wikipedia is not intended as a place for people to write about themselves or their own companies, because of the conflict of interest involved. Read the WP:FAQ/Organizations and the WP:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. Then, if you want to proceed, register an account as an individual (use your real name or not, as you choose, see WP:REALNAME, but not the name of a group or organization) and send me a message from it, and I will give you more advice. JohnCD,

My friend and I created the page listed above for a friend of ours who past away in 2007. At no time was the page meant to be used as reference material and we even stated the purpose of it in the introduction.

Now, all the material that we loaded on there is lost!

The page was started by my friend, but I am writing on his behalf. I imagine you will be receiving an email from him also.

So thanks for not warning us so we could have saved the material we uploaded. It would have been nice if you had done that before removing the page!

Scott 75.191.195.109 (talk) 23:06, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, but Wikipedia is a serious project to build an encyclopedia and is not for that kind of "joke" entry, even in user pages. If your friend enables email on his User:Lloydev account, I will email him the text. To do that, click "Preferences" at the top of the screen and at the bottom of the "User profile" tab fill in the email address (which will not be visible to me or anyone) and check the box marked "Enable email from other users". If you want to post that material online, Myspace or Facebook might allow it, or see if you get any ideas from Wikipedia:Alternative outlets. JohnCD (talk) 08:05, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Unable to login using user: Llyodev and password. Could you please suggest alternate way to receive text from the deleted page. Also, it was a User page and was not visible to the public. If you did a search on Wiki you would not find the page. It was hidden. So why bother deleting something that only a few friend could see in the first place? Also, I find it interesting you use the word "joke" in your description of the page. They was for a friend who died.

Please let me know how to recover text for this page since I am not able to login. I do have the password, but would rather not put it up here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.191.217.151 (talk) 20:01, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

The point is that Wikipedia is a project to build an encyclopedia, and that is all it is; in order to keep to that mission, there is a long list of things that Wikipedia is not, which includes not a web host for content unrelated to the encyclopedia.
I have put a copy of your text temporarily into User:JohnCD/draft and you can copy it from there. To do that, click "Edit", then do "Select all" and "Copy", and paste it into Notepad or any word processor. I will leave it for three days, but leave a note here if you have got it before that. Maybe because it have Vietnamese title?--Mishae (talk) 15:21, 1 June 2013 (UTC)
(edit conflict) OK then, but your recreated article of 18 May didn't say that (though I see it was in the infobox); it just said he plays for Dong Thap. If you are recreating a deleted article, it's best to make very clear why the previous reason for deletion no longer applies, or (preferably and) check with the deleting admin. Instead of just going and speedily deleting perhaps you should also have a better look at the article before you go ahead and just zap it. The article was obviously recreated on the 18 May for a reason. You have to assume that perhaps something has changed.Simione001 (talk) 01:03, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I could have read the infobox more carefully, but since this was the important new feature of the re-created article you could have avoided misunderstanding by putting it in the text. Unfortunately, people very often do re-create deleted footballer articles even when there is no new reason. JohnCD (talk) 22:38, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Well, I didn't posted the PROD template in the article because User:Isinbill have had improperly "moved" the article, deleting the content of Black Dominican and pasting it on Afro-Dominican (Dominican Republic), which made troubles in both Talk and History pages. I undid his changes and proposed a Speedy deletion for Afro-Dominican (Dominican Republic) to then move Black Dominican into the new blanked page. I think I read that it can be placed a notification on the talk of the related Wikiprojects, so I posted it on a project's talk meanwhile waiting for the speedy deletion, but I had to go, and I didn't move the page. Isinbill did the move. My intention is that Afro-Dominican (Dominican Republic) should be divide into 2 articles, because it is joining two ethnicities into one article. User:Isinbill argues that Afro-Dominican isn't about an ethnicity but (I think that) whoever reads that article will not agree, because it is way too obvious that the article implies that, its style is alike other ethnicities articles, and even it has an "Ethnic group" infobox. Well, before you do any more moves or deletion proposals, please discuss with Isinbill and anyone else interested on the talk page and try to come to a WP:Consensus about how this should be treated. Perhaps someone else from the WikiProject can advise; if you cannot agree with Isinbill, see WP:Third opinion and WP:Dispute resolution for possible ways forward. Deletion of "List of people who have been called 'polymaths'"

Dear JohnCD,

I saw that the page List of people who have been called "polymaths" was deleted by you for G8, pages dependent on non-existent pages. While I know you do a great job and I do commend you for all that you do for wikipedia (I among many many many others truly appreciate you and all the other great people who contribute to wikipedia and help to make it what it is), I am asking that you restore this page. I do agree that some of the people listed do not have pages, but a great deal of them do as well, such as da Vinci, Shen Kuo, Newton, Einstein, and many others. That article was fascinating and I learned a good deal, discovering brilliant individuals of whom I had never heard before. I acknowledge that not every individual on the page has their own wikipedia article, but we know that over time, articles are created: others who may read that article will look and observe one of these great individuals that they know of and will contribute an article to them (and every person that was listed on that page certainly should have an article about them—it is sad that not all of them do).

I personally learned of Mikhail Lomonosov through that page. He does have his own article which I read and became fascinated with him. I have since read 2 biographies, some of his original scientific papers, and an assortment of his poetry. I intend to contribute to his article on wikipedia now as well. These are the sorts of actions that make me believe the polymaths article is very important. I hope that you agree and decide to restore the page.

Thank you,--128.12.95.13 (talk) 09:03, 3 June 2013 (UTC) J-Trod [email protected]

What I deleted was a "redirect", List of polymaths, left pointing nowhere after the deletion of List of people who have been called "polymaths". This has a fairly complicated history. Deletions of articles like this one are not done on one person's say-so; there are "deletion debates" lasting a week where anyone can comment, and at the end an administrator decides whether there is a consensus. To start with, in 2006 there was "List of polymaths", deleted after Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of polymaths because of problems of definition and verifiability (Wikipedia:Verifiability is a fundamental policy).
In 2009 a new version was created which tried to avoid the problem of definition, and in 2011 Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of people who have been called "polymaths" decided to keep that; but after changes of name it was recently nominated again at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of people who have been called a polymath which fairly convincingly decided to delete, once again because of problems of definition and deciding whose opinions were reliable.
Having been deleted at AfD, the way to ask for it back is, first to ask the deleting administrator, in this case user LFaraone (talk), though it is hard to see how he could have closed the debate any other way, and then to apply at WP:Deletion review.
There is still the article Polymath, where the section "Notable polymaths" will now need to be expanded. I see that there is a similar debate going on at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Renaissance men. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 17:29, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
