    Improving sentence structure

Have my latest edits to medical conditions actually improved sentence structure or violated the Manual of Style?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Aeschylus (talkcontribs) 02:05, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I searched and found that this was added by Aeschylus. The most recent in Aeschylus's list of contributions is this. Aeschylus, I get the impression that you dislike the passive. The passive is a fully grammatical, very convenient and with rare exceptions (exemplified by the weaselly/risible "mistakes were made") fully acceptable device for changing the valency of an English verb, most suitable when the identity of the doer of the deed is of little or no importance to what is being said. (Highly recommended: "Fear and loathing of the English passive".) -- Hoary (talk) 03:19, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Some of the changes are good. However, going from "If normal thoracic duct drainage is disrupted" to "If disruption of normal thoracic duct drainage occurs"; from "Chylothorax can also be congenital" to "Chylothorax can also occur congenitally"; from "It is especially common in surgeries requiring mediastinal dissection" to "in particular, it frequently complicates surgeries requiring mediastinal dissection": each of these seems unfortunate to me. (Only the first of these three goes from passive to active, of course. Another possible explanation: you have an odd aversion to the verb be.) There are more besides, but three examples should be enough to make my point. -- Hoary (talk) 08:07, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. When are to be verbs a good idea and when are they a bad idea?
I have heard that they are a bad idea, but I want to know when they are useful and then they clutter the sentence.
In addition, which of my changes were good compared to my bad changes? I want to know the difference between my good and my bad changes so I can avoid future issues.
Additionally, when is combining sentences a good idea? I want to remove clutter/wordiness from a sentence. What should I look out for? I used to have a great obsession with length, so added a lot of meaningleff fluff to my articles. How can I amke the text concise but easy to understand? aeschylus (talk) 20:08, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Aeschylus, there are few simple rules. When you say that you've heard "to be verbs" are "a bad idea", I suppose that you mean some talk about occurrences of be somehow degrading the sentences they're in. Of course this is possible. I can add an utterly superfluous be to a sentence above, resulting in "It is especially common in surgeries is requiring mediastinal dissection". This is ungrammatical. But a writer of English as a first language who has no language impairment (and who isn't senile, drunk, very sleepy, etc) wouldn't accept this sentence. You're probably not asking about that kind of thing. As for uses of be that aren't ungrammatical, I can't think of any that's stylistically undesirable. You say you want to remove clutter and wordiness, but these should be examples of clutter and wordiness that stand out when you read them, not those that you identify via some "rule" propounded by the kind of fool "language expert" who tells people that they should avoid adjectives (a link I warmly recommend). -- Hoary (talk) 07:27, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary, if possible, can you please show me a good and bad change I made so I can compare the two take into account what was helpful? When adding new content, I want to know if my structure is appropriate for Wikipedia. aeschylus (talk) 04:37, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Aeschylus, please choose a sizeable paragraph you wrote that's of some concern to you, and, on your user page, point to it (or make a copy of it), and ping me to draw my attention to this new message. I'll read the paragraph and see whether there's any particular comment on it that I think is worth making. -- Hoary (talk) 05:28, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Aeschylus The PDF linked above is a good read. It discusses the relatively recent shunning of the verb "to be". I would argue that the advice you heard, that "to be" is bad, is bad advice. David10244 (talk) 05:00, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Aeschylus, I've looked at your recent edits, and for me, most of them make the text harder to understand. The most recent introduced a grammatical error: "Surgery has in other animals has had limited success". Maproom (talk) 07:47, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Madhukogan Assuming this is about your Draft:The Designers Group, we don't categorise drafts, only accepted articles. There are various ways to add categories to items in mainspace but the most versatile is probably the WP:HOTCAT gadget. (Some people do add potential categories to the foot of their drafts in a way that means the actual category pages are not populated but I think that is a waste of time since it won't help the review of the draft.) Changing the name of a page

    Hello,

I want to change the name of Deborah Berke Partners to TenBerke because they changed their name. Martiacosta (talk) 16:38, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Martiacosta I have undone most of the changes you made to that article. I left the new name in, but also added the old name back in. I got rid of the long, unsourced list of awards you added, and the list of completed projects you added (leaving the ones that were already there). Now, as for the article's title; see WP:NAMECHANGES. Basically we don't move an article automatically when an entity changes its name. We wait until we have sources demonstrating that the new name is the name being used by most sources. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:53, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks, but the long list of awards I added did have sources as well as a lot of the projects. I can readd them and link to the websites... Martiacosta (talk) 17:25, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Short description. I am a rather active editor of my national Ukrainian branch of Wikipedia. More than half a year ago, my account was restricted from creating new articles. it's here. Blitzfan51 (talk) 22:57, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Blitzfan51, IPv6 addresses for a single user can change over time. In most cases, addresses with the same initial 64 bits belong to the same person. See IPv6 address for more details. In practical terms, if you append "/64" to the URL of an IPv6 user's contributions page, you can see all of their contributions. In this particular case, Special:Contributions/2601:5CE:4380:3A0:40FC:A02C:968:6D1C shows only one contribution, but Special:Contributions/2601:5CE:4380:3A0:40FC:A02C:968:6D1C/64 shows many more. The most likely explanation is their address changed recently and they have made only one contribution under the new address so far. CodeTalker (talk) 00:51, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Dash

In "MOS:DASH" this type of dash is not listed: "--" (broken). The sentence in question is as follows: "Earlier texts, such as the 1340 treatise De Heraudie, for example, makes no mention of the rule--even when discussing armorial bearings that violate the supposed rule. Other 14th century authors like Bartolo and Johannes de Baudo Aureo do not make mention of the rule either.[2]" (I have indicated the dashes in bold). Page: "Rule of tincture". JackkBrown (talk) 22:20, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In "MOS:DASH" this type of dash is not listed: "--" (broken). Really? I didn't have to read very far before I found this:
Do not use a double hyphen (--) to stand in for a dash.
The obvious solution to the sentence in Rule of tincture is to replace the double hyphen with an 'approved' dash; either a spaced ndash or an mdash; you choose.
    Trappist the monk (talk) 22:48, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk: I meant that this hyphen, among the dashes that it is correct to use, doesn't exist (as specified in the "MOS:DASH" guide), and I didn't know if the person who wrote the sentence wanted to use the en dash or the em dash. JackkBrown (talk) 23:07, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You did not say that. When writing posts here, say what you mean and mean what you say. It does not matter what that other editor wanted. This is wikipedia; tons and tons of stuff is broken or malformed. Out of 6,820,679 articles, you found one where hyphens are used in a way that is contrary to the MOS. WP:SOFIXIT. How you do that (which 'dash' you use) is entirely up to you.

    Carla "KC" Hanson article

A page was created about me several years ago, Carla "KC" Hanson, and I discovered it by accident. I did not create it not authorize it, but did not mind. It was mostly factual, but had one error. That's when I signed up for Wiki editing, and I fixed the error. The page has now been removed, which is disappointing since the fact of my existence has not changed. This begs several questions. 1. Can I see the removed page in any archive? 2. Who has the authority to completely remove pages? 3. May I know who both posted my page and who removed it? KCinPDX (talk) 05:56, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

An article titled Carla Hanson was deleted as a result of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Carla Hanson. (1) Yes, you can see it here. (2) An "administrator", if an "AfD" ("Articles for Deletion" process) has determined that it should be removed. (3) It was created by PortlandSaint, edited by various others (including not once but twice by you, in both June and December of 2020), nominated for deletion by Bedivere, and deleted by Liz. -- Hoary (talk) 08:32, 5 May 2023 (UTC) PS Perhaps I should have pinged KCinPDX. Well then, belatedly pinging KCinPDX. -- Hoary (talk) 21:31, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary Your "ping" is a red link to her non-existent userpage. Does that really ping? 🙂 David10244 (talk) 05:15, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    David10244, I believe so, -- Hoary (talk) 05:23, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@KCinPDX One point: it's not necessary that you "authorize" an article about yourself. I'm sure the current Pope didn't authorize the article that's about him.
As the linked deletion discussion implies, a subject needs to be notable, meeting certain notability guidelines, for an article to survive. Existence is not enough, or else we could have an article on each person who is alive or has ever lived. David10244 (talk) 05:12, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I posted my questions before I found the section on "notability". After I read that, I was even more curious as to why a page on me was posted in the first place. And just now checking out the notes on "Portland Saint," the original author, I am scratching my head as to why someone with opposite political views would create a Wiki Bio on me. I am guessing those errors in his "bio" of me may have been intentional. 2601:1C2:980:3C10:E984:7D10:5191:8B2A (talk) 07:56, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia editors are not limited to creating articles about topics that they "like". Any editor can create any article that they want, but repeatedly creating poor quality articles can lead to sanctions including blocks. Since the article in question was deleted 2-1/2 months ago, I do not see the point in discussing factual inaccuracies. It is gone, after all. Cullen328 (talk) 08:05, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
KCinPDX, administrators are the only group of Wikipedia editors who have the power to delete articles, and I am one of about 450 active administrators. We need to follow policy, though, and this deletion was the result of a community discussion. Cullen328 (talk) 08:10, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To be clear, I am not arguing for my "bio;" I am fine with the policy, and I am glad I understand it better. Frankly, I have just kept an occasional eye on my bio since the original had the errors I've noted. However, I would caution any of the administrators to not be overly blasé that an error is moot because a post is deleted. "Portland Saint" took the time to create a page on me which had an error that was significant, describing me as affiliated with a well-known ANTI-LGBT group in the 90's when I was and am a LGBT activist. Yes, my page is moot, but, for whatever reason, he created a false bio of me, there is a strong possibility and even likelihood that more of the "Saint's" posts/pages contain factual errors and even disinformation, and I am guessing that there is a Wiki rule that applies to posting inaccurate information. 2601:1C2:980:3C10:DD41:9B8E:B4CF:3492 (talk) 15:57, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Remember to log in to your account, so your posts are properly attributed to you. There is a rule that articles about living people must be well sourced and accurate, it is called the Biographies of Living Persons policy. You are free to examine any articles that you wish and their sources to determine accuracy, and if you find inaccurate statements or poorly sourced statements, discuss the removal of that content on the article talk page or even remove it yourself. 331dot (talk) 17:09, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You misunderstand how Wikipedia works. Wikipedia is crowdsourced by a huge number of self-selected volunteers editors with no hierarchy and no assigned tasks. There are no "administrators" in the sense you use the term: our administrators carry out functions like deletion after editors arrive at a consensus. We (including you) are all equally responsible for correcting errors. This chaotic process has resulted in what is arguably the best encyclopedia ever created by a very large margin. We have about 100,000 editors active in any given 30-day period, collectively making more than 10 edits per minute, every minute of the year. You are free to investigate "Portland Saint"'s edit history, and you have exactly the same rights and responsibilities to do so as any other editor. If you find a pattern of bad editing, come back here and we can help you with the next steps. -Arch dude (talk) 17:13, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Second order disambiguation

At present Wu Qing is a disambiguation page between

However...a second politician by that name has now emerged (a male born April 1965 obviously distinct from the female born November 1937 who is the last one listed above). He would seem destined to get an article as he's listed as an Alternate Member of the 20th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (currently executive vice mayor of Shanghai Municipality so number 2 to the mayor and around number 5 in the combined party/state leadership there...Bloomberg News has speculated that he will succeed Yi Huiman as head of the Securities Regulatory Commission and until 2018 he chaired the Shanghai Stock Exchange). The two politicians are of the same party and nationality so what does one call the article for him?

    • male politician?
    • Shanghai politician?
    • politician born 1965? (the two Lu Haos would seem a precedent for this).

I realize the disambigs here are rather chaotic and coverage of namesakes can be spotty. Every president of the Ramakrishna Order has an article except for the first and longest serving of them all who despite being the "spiritual son" of Ramakrishna himself is shown on the Brahmananda disambig as a redlink with a link to a subhead on Disciples of Ramakrishna and I wonder if this is because there's no consensus on titling an article for him (redlink is "Swami Brahmananda" below two Brahmanand(a) Swamis). William Edgar "Bill" Oddie has an article but the writer/cleric/editor William Oddie [1][2] (1939-2019) doesn't even get a hatnote to distinguish them. And the Amadeus Quartet that disbanded on its first death in 1987 has an article with no mention made of the four Romanian women who have performed under that name since 2000[3][4] to distinguish them.

    But...any clarity increase is an improvement? 108.29.145.226 (talk) 06:06, 5 May 2023 (UTC) 108.29.145.226 (talk) 06:06, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Citation query

Hello. I had an edit paragraph removed by Aaron Liu as he said it lacked citation. I have some issues with how to cite this particular paragraph on Stewart Nozette PhD. On the talk page for Stewart I posted that I was adding this and that I had documents pertaining to his pardon but as I don't have a website I was aaking how I could make this available to cite what I had added. Also, although his literary agency - Gold Dust, out of Las Vegas - have signed him they have not updated their authors page with him as yet, so I could not cite that. It seems that the only issue with the innocuous paragraph is the lack of citation - given what I've said, is there anything I can do to make the edit allowable? I have not edited on Wiki before, so would appreciate feedback. I spoke to Stewart about this and he says the official pardon number is C277648 and that they are part of the Presidential Records ACT and can be obtained from the National Archives. Can this be cited? Can I submit the documents to Wiki somehow? Aaron was unable to answer this and directed me here. Thanks. SalzenD Salzend (talk) 14:05, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pinging @Aaron Liu: as a courtesy. In short biographies are held to a higher standard than anything else on Wikipedia. All major claims on Wikipedia need to have a citation, on biographies it's prerequisite; you need the reference, before you type the prose. Someone may be able to help regarding C277648 and National Archives so wait and see what develops. Wikipedia doesn't have a deadline. - X201 (talk) 14:12, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was hoping someone at the help desk would be able to help with the archives Aaron Liu (talk) 18:49, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Salzend You won't need to submit any documents to Wikipedia, but you'll need to create "references" to published material that verifies the information, once those published references exist (or once you can locate them). And you'll put those references into the document, next to the information that the references support. See WP:REFB. David10244 (talk) 05:21, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's good. Thanks for the information, much appreciated. Salzend (talk) 09:59, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Adding an artist

I want to add an Artist to Wikipedia.

    How do I do that? Csmilkov (talk) 14:41, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It all depends on how notable the person is. It would also help considerably if you did not have a conflict of interest caused by being linked to the person in some way. See your first article for more help.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 14:46, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Csmilkov Wikipedia is not a mere database of artists, this is an encyclopedia with criteria for inclusion, such as the definition of a notable musician or notable artist. If a person meets a notablity definition, there then must be significant coverage in independent reliable sources that can be summarized. If you have sources and the person is notable, you may create a draft via Articles for creation. Be advised that creating a new article is the most difficult task to perform on Wikipedia. You are advised to first gain experience by editing existing articles first, and using the new user tutorial. 331dot (talk) 14:48, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Title

    The title of which article? - X201 (talk) 14:51, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@X201: the page in question is "Tar (drum)". JackkBrown (talk) 14:52, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    MOS:FOREIGN applies.

But that's a word for a stringed instrument. Is there any evidence that this tar, a drum, has the same origin? Maproom (talk) 17:38, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ianmacm: same here: "Saharat Thai Doem". JackkBrown (talk) 17:55, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
People have different interpretations of MOS:FOREIGN. Personally I don't think this needs italic titles either, but will wait to see what other users say.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 18:12, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm inclined to disagree. The guidance at Wikipedia:Manual of Style § Common usage in English recommends the use of English-language dictionaries which Britannica is not. If I go to Google and enter define:tar (link) I get a listing of several dictionary entries for 'tar':
Of these, only wiktionary has a definition that matches the definition of the en.wiki article (see §Etymology 4)
If I go to Google translate and enter the Arabic: طار, it shows the transliteration as tar (link). I can't speak to the accuracy of the translations that it returns but the transliteration does suggest that the use of tar in the en.wiki article is not the common term usually understood by native English speakers as the black sticky stuff. I would therefore markup all instances of tar in the article as {{transliteration|ar|tar}} – perhaps even the title: {{DISPLAYTITLE:{{transliteration|ar|tar}}}}. I don't know if the article should keep the Arabic script طار because unsourced and because the translations at Google translate don't fit – I did look in ar.wiki but there doesn't seem to be a matching drum article there (intitle search results). Wiktionary's Etymology 4 does use طار but that use is unreferenced.

@David10244: I think you are confusing country codes and language codes. See List of ISO 639-1 codes where Ukranian is listed as uk or ukr. The country code for Ukrane according to ISO 3166 is indeed ua or ukr. The ccTLD is .ua. So, uk.wikipedia.org is the Ukranian language Wikipedia whereas ua.wikipedia.org would be the Ukrainian country Wikipedia (which doesn't exist). Here are other images to choose from at Wiki Commons of Meghan Markle: Meghan Markle. Just make sure they have cross usage. Also, if you can find either public domain or fair use images online (Flickr, etc) you are more than welcome to upload a more suitable image that you deem appropriate for the infobox. But it must comply with certain WP infobox image guidelines H:INFOP. Maineartists (talk) 12:29, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Karaokejackie: You can suggest a specific image at Talk:Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Merely asking for a "more respectful image/photograph" is not helpful. Our license requirements reduce the possibilities. File:Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex (2022).JPG was suggested at Talk:Meghan, Duchess of Sussex/Archive 12#Image update but didn't get consensus. Maineartists, when you say Also, if you can find either public domain or fair use images online (Flickr, etc) you are more than welcome to upload a more suitable image that you deem appropriate for the infobox, I suppose that by "fair use images" you mean "conventionally ('all rights reserved') copyright images that can nevertheless be used in a particular article via a claim of 'fair use'". If so, note that Wikipedia:Non-free content says: Non-free content should not be used when a freely licensed file that serves the same purpose can reasonably be expected to be uploaded, as is the case for almost all portraits of living people. -- Hoary (talk) 00:09, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Maineartists What is "cross usage"? I don't think that is a Wikipedia term. All images at Commons are freely usable in any Wikipedia language project. Just to be clear, there aren't really "imagebox" guidelines, but there are image guidelines. David10244 (talk) 05:36, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I never said it was. When a file uploaded for one particular page but is used on other Wiki pages, that's what I call: cross usage; but then there are uploaded images that can only be used for the sole purpose of that page they are associated with and cannot be used on any other page. I've attempted to do this several times. An uploaded image of a BLP on a page that is not their own, but when I tried to use that image on their BLP page, it was not allowed. The image was only uploaded for use on that one single page. Maineartists (talk) 13:00, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    MOS:UPRIGHT

The policy MOS:UPRIGHT reads: "Except with very good reason, a fixed width in pixels (e.g. 17px) should not be specified. This ignores the user's base width setting, so upright=scaling factor is preferred whenever possible."

I would appreciate some clarification on this, though it seems very straightforward to me. In most cases I confront, a fixed width in pixels has correctly not been specified, and I have employed the upright scaling, exactly as the policy suggests, "whenever possible." I would welcome additional and objective input on this question: In what possible cases should upright be used? "Whenever possible" seems very clear. In what possible cases, if any, should it not be used?

Thanks for any enlightened insight on this question. Keystone18 (talk) 21:15, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Remember, this is a global project. "There was a funny smell down at the high school; doctors looked at six kids and the school closed" is barely notable enough for local coverage, if your kid doesn't go there. My userpage includes {{Userspace linking templates}} navbox for quick reference. My preference is to partially expand the navbox to show the four subcategories headers, but not expand the subcategories.

Is there some trick to do this with WikiText? — BillHPike (talk, contribs) 19:15, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@BillHPike: I have added state parameters without changing the defaults.[3] You can now call with |state=expanded |state1=collapsed. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:48, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
