::::::On the one hand, consistency is good. On the other hand, the old short description "19th letter in the English alphabet" was 35 characters long, and the new one "Nineteenth letter in the English alphabet" is 41, exceeding the recommended length of 40 at WP:SHORTDESC, so the short description will be truncated in some contexts. Just as a context-free ordinal, MOS:NUMERAL says that either is acceptable. Regarding consistency, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, T, U, V, and W all use digits in the lead sentence but a spelled-out ordinal in the short description (which seems to be the opposite of what it should be, since several of the short descriptions exceed 40 characters). But right now S is the only one of these that uses a spelled-out ordinal in the lead sentence. It seems to me that it would be better if we used digits in the short description for all these articles to meet the length guideline, and maybe a spelled-out ordinal in the lead sentence. Notation from official government source
Case in point. The United States Government NTSB or the FAA publish a letter, document, image, etc. on their offical web site or their official alternate sites linked to from their official web sites, such as twitter @NTSB_Newroom, a NTSB Flickr photo album, etc. Are these considered reliable sources? Do we have to wait until some third party (NY Times, etc.) notices and says on their website "Hey the NTSB just did this"? If commenting in a Wikipedia article that the NTSB or FAA published an item and a brief reference to the jist of the content, and same official web site or official alternate site is already linked in the External Links section of the article, what options are there for notation? For example, could I just say "(see NTSB Flickr link below)" or is a footnote stricktly required? QualityMattersJoe (talk) 02:19, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- @QualityMattersJoe: Hi there! Publications from the NTSB or FAA are primary sources, where as a news organization is a secondary source They're both reliable sources, but Wikipedia prefers to use secondary sources to demonstrate notability. Whether a source is primary or secondary, we would create a footnote when the source supports a specific statement in the Wikipedia article. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 04:09, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- @GoingBatty Assuming notability has already been demonstrated, should we still prefer to use the news source? The newspaper generally won't use an exact quote and it won't provide the same context as the government report, so it seems to be more likely to introduce an ambiguity than to clear one up. Ironically, we're not really allowed to make sense out of any ambiguity by reviewing information from additional sources, because that would be WP:Synth. We are required to worship at the altar of WP. This is all doctrine, so use of logic and reason constitutes

How to search inside a short description in JWB
I'm thinking of doing a JWB run to change instances of Nur-Sultan inside short descriptions to Astana, but I have no idea how to search inside shortdescs and I don't know a single bit of regex. Can any fellow Wikipedians help me with this if possible? Thanks, Prodraxis (talk) 02:42, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

Remove protection from Help:IPA/English
Hello. Help talk:IPA/English recommended to me to report here because it warned me its namespace (Help talk) was less watched. I would ask if you would remove protection from the Help:IPA/English page. It would be better to allow IPs to edit this page because I believe the reason of protecting this page is obsolete. --2601:204:E681:F150:6940:5789:671A:99B9 (talk) 02:58, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

How to add this image to infobox of Batley Variety Club?
File named The Batley Frontier - geograph.org.uk - 413091.jpg on Wikipedia Commons Danstarr69 (talk) 10:04, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Danstarr69: That's not an appropriate image to replace either of the current images in the infobox. It does not illustrate the article's topic, as required by MOS:IMAGERELEVANCE. It would be great, though, in the Batley_Variety_Club#Closure section of the article, which mentions the building's fortunes after the variety club closed. WP:Extended image syntax gives instructions on how to add it, if you need them. Bazza (talk) 10:15, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- Bazza 7 I didn't say replace, I said add.
- As I've just pointed out on Teahouse, it spent...
- Roughly 11 years as Batley Variety Club
- At least 30-35 years as Frontier Nightclub
- And has currently spent around 7 years as a JD Gym Danstarr69 (talk) 10:32, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Danstarr69: The majority of the article's current content is about the variety club, with other subsequent uses confined to a short section at the end. MOS:LEADIMAGE suggests just one image for the lead to illustrate the article's topic. The place for other images is in the most relevant article section (MOS:IMAGELOC), and your proposed addition should follow this. The image showing the interior of the club should be moved from the infobox to the paragraph which describes the interior, where it is appropriate. Bazza (talk) 11:39, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
Where to find the history of Wikipedia
I'm sorry if this question is a bit off-topic. Wikipedia:History of Wikipedian processes and people, Wikipedia:Historic debates, and stuff like that all only goes to around the early 2010s, then it stopped. The History of Wikipedia page also feels very lacking as well. It just feels that there's something that has erased all of Wikipedia history, like in the Matrix... CactiStaccingCrane (talk) 16:00, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- The problem may be that the information is scattered all over, including on meta. WP:NEWS has links to a lot of possible sources. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:25, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
Lost article
I was asked to reveiw a wikipedia article that I had been cited in. Unfortunately the email I was sent went to my old work email address and I can no longer access it. How can I find this page to check my citation. It still appears not to be published. Lucygwen.gillis (talk) 17:22, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- Providing the name of the article would help, are you saying that you don't know what the article is called? Theroadislong (talk) 17:28, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- The article was not published yet on wikipedia, wikipedia emailed to ask for me to reveiw how I was referenced. Is there a way I can search for articles that are still being processed? Lucygwen.gillis (talk) 17:40, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- "Gillis, Lucy Gwen" is mentioned in reference 39 in the Mangrove crab article. Is that what you are looking for? -- John of Reading (talk) 17:32, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- I believe the article was about connectivity, which I have searched for and as I cannot find it I believe it is not published yet. Is there a way I can search for articles that are still being processed? Lucygwen.gillis (talk) 17:41, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- Do you know the title of the work of yours that had been cited? A search like this one searches all pages on Wikipedia, both those that are part of the encyclopedia itself and all the behind-the-scenes pages such as half-written articles. -- John of Reading (talk) 17:55, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- It seems highly unlikely that "wikipedia emailed to ask for me to reveiw how I was referenced" that's not how it works here. Theroadislong (talk) 18:12, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your reply. I will go through this link. Best wishes, Lucy Lucygwen.gillis (talk) 08:01, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
- I just wanted to let you know I found the article. Acutally it was published but a slightly different name (Faciliation Cascade) and I am well cited. Facilitation cascade
- Thank you for your help, still a bit odd I received that email. Lucygwen.gillis (talk) 08:08, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, Lucygwen. I echo Theroadislong in saying that the email you got is highly irregular. "Wikipedia" does not send out such emails (it doesn't exist in that sense). It is possible that a particular Wikipedia editor sent you such a mail, but I cannot imagine why.
- The most likely is that this was sent by a scam-merchant, hoping you would pay them to "improve" your presence in Wikipedia - see WP:SCAM.
- John has shown you how to search for draft articles. It is also possible that the "mention" they were referring to was in a draft article which has since been deleted, or has been edited and no longer mentions you. Sorry I can't be of more help. ColinFine (talk) 18:27, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, the email took me directly to the wikipedia and the article page and did not ask me for any details or any money. I was in the process of moving jobs so I could not go any further than with my reveiw, and how the cited my and other scientists was fine as far as I could see-so I don't believe it was a spam email but could be. I will search for through the draft articles! Thank you for your reply, the replies have been very useful :) Lucygwen.gillis (talk) 07:54, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

- @Lucygwen.gillis: Your email address is shown in the source so that's how somebody found you but it's odd that they mailed you. It may still have been a scammer trying to get you interested before asking for money to alledgedly do something for you in Wikipedia. If the mail sounded generic then somebody may have written a script to scan Wikipedia sources for email addresses and spam them. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:36, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Blocked IP addresses
Hi, some of my colleagues need to make changes to some pages for Griffith College and their IP addresses seem to be blocked so they are not allowed to edit the pages. Can I provide a list of IP addresses to be allowed? Thank you GC2024 (talk) 12:58, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
- GC2024 If your colleagues have accounts, they should request unblock from their accounts; they should receive instructions on how to do this when they attempt to make an edit(but they may see the unblock appeals guide as well). Whether the IPs can be unblocked will depend on the reason for the block- it is not permitted(for example) to edit via a webhost or VPN.
- If you or your colleagues work for the College, you need to declare as paid editors, see WP:PAID for instructions. 331dot (talk) 13:08, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
- Helloa, GC2024. Your choice of words "some of my colleagues need to make changes" suggests that you and they may be holding an erroneous understanding of what Wikipedia is. Please be aware that your college does not own the article about it, and does not decide what should be in it. You and your colleagues as welcome to make edit requests for changes to the article, but it will be indepedent volunteer editors who decide what to do with those requests. I am Christopher Britton Actor. The date of birth on my Wiki page is incorrect. All I want to do is change it to the CORRECT date.....December 23, 1948. I am now 75 years old. Would someone please make this correction. Thank you. Christopher Britton Dennis Vine (talk) 17:42, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
- Dennis Vine - you asked this back in August 2023 and were advised "As for getting your birthdate corrected, I suggest you post a request to that effect on the article talk page. Be sure to provide a WP:reliable source for your birthdate!" - It appears you did not do that, but the advice remains the same.
We have no idea who you actually are, but are claiming to be Christopher Britton, whilst using a different user-name. We need a WP:reliable source for the Date of Birth, so it can be verified, both now, and at any time in the future. - Arjayay (talk) 17:55, 24 January 2024 (UTC)- Are you an agent or representative of Mr. Britton? 331dot (talk) 17:58, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
- 13 years is a remarkable discrepancy: it would mean that instead of being a teenager in his first role in 1979 (which is consistent with other information in the article), Britton was actually 31. We would need to see a convincing published Reliable source to corroborate this claim.
- I note also that the entirety of the article's biographical text (i.e. not the appearance tables) is unreferenced. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 176.24.47.60 (talk) 18:32, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

- Rather more important than the publisher is, I think, the author. As Cullen328 and OCLC 458179424 indicate, the author behind the pseudonym was Paul Lacroix. You could use the "author-link" attribute for this. -- Hoary (talk) 01:50, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

department of housing and construction in sydney
i dont want to ask a question but couldnt find a page where i could set the record straight on the above governmrnt department in sydney. i worked for that department and the dates are wrong. the government department of housing and construction was before 1977 because i got a job there around september 1977 and it was named the above department so i dont know who the source of your info is from but it was known as department of housing and construction well before i joined. and the department mostly built public housing places. 114.76.247.167 (talk) 23:08, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
- If you have suggestions to improve an article, start a discussion on that article's talk page. Any information must come from published sources, not your personal recollection. RudolfRed (talk) 00:19, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hello. It would be helpful if you would specify which of our six million articles you are referring to. I haven't found a "Department of housing and construction" for Sydney, but I have found three for Australia: I'm guessing you are referring to Department of Housing and Construction (1978–1982), but maybe you were looking at
- Each of those has citations to sources, though I confess that the source that is cited for the recreation of the department in 1978 (http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/SearchOld.asp?Number=CA+2747) does not currently seem to be accessible.
- In any case, the place to bring up such a question is on the Talk page of the relevant article. But note that unpublished information, including personal recollection, is not accepted as a source for Wikipedia. You would need to find a published source for the department having existed in 1977. What needs to be done?
For years, notable WWE personnel Nick Khan did not have any article. I created it first and it was moved to Draft:Nick Khan. I worked independently on it and hours later, someone creates Nick Khan again. What needs to be done? BinaryBrainBug (talk) 01:09, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, BinaryBrainBug! I moved the Nick Khan article you created to the draft space. At the time it was moved, it contained two short sentences and one citation. As such, it was not ready to be in Wikipedia's main space yet because the article didn't indicate whether Khan is notable according to Wikipedia's guidelines. The draft space provides editors somewhere to work on their article and potentially receive feedback from other editors before having it published for the world to see. I hope that helps! :) Significa liberdade (she/her) (talk) 02:51, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

- BinaryBrainBug, if it is clear that your original work was copied from the draft to the new article, then that is a problem. But sources are not your original work. Any editor is free to write a draft at any time. And any autoconfirmed editor is free to write a new article at any time, if the topic is notable. It is not a race and we are not giving out brownie points for "first to write a certain article". The encyclopedia comes first. Cullen328 (talk) 02:25, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- BinaryBrainBug, I looked at your article at the time it was created. It consisted of two very brief sentences and a single reference. The other version consisted of two dozen sentences and sixteen references. The comparison is striking. Cullen328 (talk) 02:39, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- Cullen328, I am not here to take credit. However, the fact that I expanded and submitted the draft with reliable sources and then a another user created the article, knowing about the draft in queue is concerning, makes the whole system of draft review pointless.
- About the copying, it's not about original work, but comparing the sources cited and archived, it seems that the user was at least aware of my draft. Again, I am not claiming ownership, I have problem with the review system and the user creating the article despite draft already existing without communicating with me doesn't seem respectful or good faith. What do I need to change to remove the vertical lines on the otherwise blank line (the one with the White background)? BlueWren0123 (talk) 03:05, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

colspan
on them. are you referring to something else? 💜 melecie talk - 03:20, 25 January 2024 (UTC)- No, for me it has the 2 vertical lines at the surround of the table. I have no lines within the table for that row.
- Thinker78 - I looked at the 2 table option, but it seems that I would then need to change the horizontal sizes if I make any changes. I had hoped keeping to one table would avoid that BlueWren0123 (talk) 03:42, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- @BlueWren0123: Tables are for presenting tabulated data. See MOS:TABLES. It seems you are trying to use tables for a purpose (e.g. formatting) other than that permitted. If you give a more detailed idea of what you are trying to achieve, then there may be other solutions to recommend. Bazza (talk) 10:39, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Bazza 7:I am intending to use the tables for presenting tabulated data but to ask the question I presented just sufficient to ask the question. I was being concise.
- I have information which will be best understood when presented in rows and columns and so a table is the most appropriate presentation style.
- If the implementation of Tables is not going to work as I would like, then I will certainly consider other possibilities. Rather than create a large table and then find that it will not present the information clearly, I have asked for help. I try to consider the presentation of the data together with the gathering of the data. To use other than a Table for the data that I am gathering is not a 'best fit'.
- Your recent arrangement of information into a table on Miner's inch in my opinion is an improvement. Your decision to use the flexibility of the Table arrangement seems well considered. Surely you are using formatting to display the data.
- Why then do you tell me that using a Table for formatting is a purpose other than that permitted.
- Could you not have tried to answer my question instead? BlueWren0123 (talk) 13:03, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- @BlueWren0123: By "formatting" I meant formatting of page layouts. Some editors use tables to make columns of text. Sorry if I wasn't clear.
- Your requirement is unusual: why do you need your table to have an empty row (which you referred to as a blank line)? It is that which lead me to ask you for clarification about what you are attempting to achieve. Bazza (talk) 13:09, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- In the 'About all of the above' I intend to put clarification that applies to many of the cells above. To repeat that within the cells would be unnecessary clutter. I already have a presentation method for that that is within the MOS. BlueWren0123 (talk) 13:15, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- @BlueWren0123: If the explanation is not tabulated data, then it should not be in the table. You can follow the table with normal text, or a list of explanations, or use notes to help with your explanations, or a combination of all of those. An example of using notes can be seen at District line § Four Lines Modernisation (4LM). Bazza (talk) 13:34, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

That does not answer the question of why you want a blank line. Why not simply:

This is no longer a productive exchange for me. Please deal with the content of my question. I probably will not respond further.BlueWren0123 (talk) 13:44, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- @BlueWren0123: I'm assuming that you are referring to User:BlueWren0123/Basic? If you are not, then ignore the rest of this comment; if you are, it would have been helpful to say so from the start.
- To answer your specific question: you can remove the two side borders of the blank row's single cell by adding
style="border: none;"
to its properties. - Your table, though, has two errors in it:
- The completely blank row consisting of a single cell has no data in it. Its sole purpose is to act separate the rows above and below it, meaning it's being used for formatting the display of the table. It should not be present in the table.
- It is not clear what the bottom row is as it is structurally covered by all three column headers. Because of this, it does not meet WP:ACCESSIBILITY. Its contents ought to be outside the table.
- Should you add a table of that design to an article your edit could be reverted for the reasons I have attempted to give you above. Bazza (talk) 14:15, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

- Thx. I think I'll only do 1 edit a day in future. I'd added 3 lines, on diff aspects of Standup and all were removed - so I'm clueless as to whether it was 1 or all that @Seasides53 objected to.
- I did think for a second it was an IT issue as I'd had an "exceeded rate limit" message and then found i was logged out (even though I'd checked to remain in for 1 year). I ended up logging back in 3 times (?) so something wasn't happy on the site (unless I happened to hit the page the second that it was being "reverted"). Supercentenarians
I use Fandom to track supercentenarians. Fandom referred me to Wikipedia as the source. My question: The list of names for 2024 does not contain a (chronological number) as it has in past years. For example, compare https://gerontology.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_supercentenarians_who_died_in_2023 and https://gerontology.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_supercentenarians_who_died_in_2024
Having the names by number would be very helpful.
Thanks Steve Emperor43 (talk) 15:33, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- This page is for asking questions about editing Wikipedia. We cannot help you with Fandom or any other website. You will need to contact whatever help forum you can find there or fix the issue yourself. I don't understand what you mean by
Having the names by number
anyway. Wikipedia has a List of notable supercentenarians, not all supercentenarians. Shantavira|feed me 16:17, 25 January 2024 (UTC)- @Emperor43: I'm also unsure which numbers you refer to. I suspect you mean superscript numbers in square brackets like [2] after the names in wikia:gerontology:List of supercentenarians who died in 2023#List. They are not intended to number the rows. They are numbered references where [2] means the second numbered reference on the whole page and so on. A table row might have 0, 1 or more references. If you click the number then you jump to the reference text at the end. Nobody has added references to wikia:gerontology:List of supercentenarians who died in 2024 so there are no such numbers there. Wikipedia is not affiliated with Fandom and I doubt you can get somebody here to add references. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:30, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
How can I publish a translation from my contributions?
Hi! I have translated an article and it's now in my contributions section, but I cannot find out how I can submit it and publish it. Thank you, Machi MavrikiM (talk) 15:42, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, MavrikiM. In general, the answer is that you can move the draft to main article space. But in your case this does not apply, for two reasons:
- 1. Your account on English Wikipedia
is too newhas not made enough edits for you to have that function available - 2. Judging by your user name, you have a conflict of interest, so you should not move the article to mainspace yourself, but should submit it for review. I have added a header to User:MavrikiM/Kostas Mavrikis to allow you to do so when you are confident that it meets English Wikipedia's requirements for referencing and notability (which may be stricter than Greek Wikipedia's) ColinFine (talk) 16:50, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- You also need to sort out the citations. Most of them use the parameter "ημερομηνία=" which is unknown in the English language Wikipedia. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 17:00, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
Copyright question: using a photo of a diskette with a label
The main image of Electronic literature is a photo of a floppy disk with a label on it - the disk contains a classic work of electronic literature, a hypertext fiction by Shelley Jackson. The article is currently undergoing a GA review and the reviewer raised the question of whether the label might be copyrighted, regardless of the photographers of the diskette having specified that it is CC-by-SA. Are there any copyright specialists who know whether that would be the case? If a diskette label is copyrightable, could the author or the publisher in question give permission to use it, or do we need to find another image? Lijil (talk) 17:01, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

But it would have little or no interest to more than a minuscule number of people, and so it shouldn't be in this encyclopedia. OK? -- Hoary (talk) 09:33, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, that's right. There are more reliable sources online for train timetables. Even if Wikipedia tried to provide them, they might not be updated, and would be unreliable. Maproom (talk) 11:31, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- An RS suggests that someone likes jelly babies, without streamlining, we are putting that completely irrelevant info into the article. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 13:47, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- See Signal-to-noise ratio. An 'indiscriminate collection of information' is useless as a means of communicating useful information. Which is supposedly what Wikipedia is for. AndyTheGrump (talk) 14:51, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- Somebody has to maintain that information, to keep it (among other things) neutral, and unvandalized, and accurate, and up-to-date. The number of volunteer-hours is Wikipedia's most limiting factor, and we can't keep up with the subjects we can (mostly) all agree we should cover. The sort of people who think it's a good idea to have articles about train schedules on the morning of 27 January 2024 tend to expect somebody else to put in the work to maintain them. —Cryptic 15:06, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
Change lenguage
Good morning everyone, This is my first time on Wikipedia. First of all, thank you very much for this community that does such an important work.
I would like to ask a question. Due to my ignorance as a beginner, I started an article in Spanish Wikipedia but I wrote it in English. I wonder if there is a way to rescue that article to publish it in English Wiki.
Also, yesterday I started a draft article in English Wikipedia and today when I wanted to continue it, it disappeared. Do you know how I can save drafts?
One last question. In English Wikipedia I was given a mentor. Is it possible to have one in this encyclopaedia?
Thanks
Sara SaraCoelho25 (talk) 09:30, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- You seem to be addressing your question to the Spanish Wikipedia; you'll have to ask about mentors at the Spanish Wikipedia there. Regarding your draft, I gather that it was deleted on the Spanish Wikipedia; you should be able to ask a Spanish Wikipedia administrator to send you a copy of the draft so you can then use our Article Wizard to submit it here. 331dot (talk) 09:36, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you very much!!! SaraCoelho25 (talk) 09:40, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- SaraCoelho25, if you started a draft article in English-language Wikipedia while logged in as "SaraCoelho25", then you didn't "publish" (save) it. (No draft of yours has been deleted.) If your draft in Spanish-language Wikipedia survives, you can copy it and paste it to a draft here in English-language Wikipedia. But I suggest that you read, and think hard about what's said in, Help:YFA. -- Hoary (talk) 09:41, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
Sam Williams ( UK Record Producer/Artist) Page Deletion
Dear Wiki people,
I wished to add content to Sam Williams' (UK Record Producer/Artist) Wikipedia page, only to find that the page is no longer available.
I don't understand why the page of someone with a forty year career as a multi-platinum record producer, songwriter, and award winning film composer, with over fifty albums with some of the world's most notable artists (including Supergrass, Plan B, Kula Shaker, The Noisettes, Gaz Coombes) has been removed.
There is a new page for a young American musician and producer with the same name, but the page for Sam Williams the UK record producer/artist is no longer available.
There is still a link available through Wikipedia as a disambiguation, but this does not go to Sam Williams the UK record producer/artist article, it goes instead to the article for Mark Gardener, who co-fronted the band The Animalhouse with Sam Williams.
Could you please advise me as to how the article for Sam Williams' (UK Record Producer/Artist) can be reinstated or if it needs to be resubmitted as a new article?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Warmest regards,

Editing a template (or possibly templates)
I've been contacted by a seismologist at the International Seismological Centre (isc) to let me know that links to the isc mirror site will soon be unavailable. Links to this site are generated by template:infobox earthquake, and template:EQ-isc-link. I suspect that the former actually uses the latter but I'm pretty lost when it comes to the nuts and bolts of templates. The urls to the isc main site will still work so I'm looking to update the template(s) to target the main site. It should be a simple fix, if only I knew how. If anyone can help or point me to where I might get help, I would be grateful. Thanks, Mikenorton (talk) 11:21, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Mikenorton and Domenicodigiacomo: Thanks for the heads up. We usually discover dead sites when we already have a lot of dead links. I have updated EQ-isc-link.[2] It may take a while before the update automatically propagates to all articles using the template. When that happens I will look for other links at Special:LinkSearch/isc-mirror.iris.washington.edu. It's currently full of links which will automatically update. See 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake for an example where the infobox link on ISC event has already updated. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:46, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- Fantastic! Many many thanks Domenicodigiacomo (talk) 11:48, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- I have also updated Short-isc.[3] No other templates make links to mirror.iris.washington.edu. Around 80 articles make links directly and will need individual updates. I will do that later. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:02, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- Brilliant @PrimeHunter:, thanks so much for sorting this out. Mikenorton (talk) 12:15, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

- @Pigsonthewing: On each of these template pages is a section showing which other Wikipedias use the template. You could try posting a note on the template talk pages on the other Wikipedias with the details of the changes made at the English Wikipedia. Or you could be bold and make the changes on the other Wikipedias. GoingBatty (talk) 00:43, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
Taking out RSS from the page that discusses Hindu terrorism.
Recently, I stumbled upon a webpage discussing Hindu terrorism, and I was surprised to see the name of RSS (Rashtriya Swyamsevak Sangh) mentioned there. It should be noted that RSS is a nationalist organization, not a terrorist organization. I kindly ask for the prompt removal of its name from that page. Kunal582002 (talk) 12:00, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- The place to discuss this is the Talk page of the relevant article. The statements in our article on Hindu terrorism are referenced to WP:Reliable sources. What is the reliable source for your assertion? Shantavira|feed me 12:15, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
I regarded the issue in Talk:S but no one replied
I have mentioned about the change in the short introduction to be in a full length, not simplified one. For example, while most explanations about the other alphabetical letters are written in sixteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth, the letter of S in 19th. 2001:EE0:4BC2:7C20:3DA6:7723:C1A5:5A75 (talk) 13:32, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- I have made that change. Thanks for letting us know. Shantavira|feed me 14:37, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- I see nothing changed. I would like to mean the short introduction entitled '19th letter of English alphabet' to 'nineteenth letter of English alphabet' from overlook to maintain the synchronization and consistency across alphabetical articles. 2001:EE0:4BC2:7C20:3DA6:7723:C1A5:5A75 (talk) 14:42, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- The term "19th" does not now appear anywhere in the article: it may be that you are viewing a cached version of it from before Shantivara's edit. Try clearing your caches. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 176.24.47.60 (talk) 18:32, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- It's in the short description - that's what they mean by "short introduction". 57.140.16.1 (talk) 18:47, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- Done. LittlePuppers (talk) 23:21, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- On the one hand, consistency is good. What happened to italics?
This is just weird. On any number of Wiki pages, the italics have disappeared. If I go into edit mode, I can see the "" that's supposed to render italics -- but the italics AREN'T rendered, and I can't seem to bring them back. What gives? Jhlechner (talk) 15:48, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

Formatting around infoboxes
Our Project uses an infobox template across several thousand articles. While normal body text is expressed fine to the left of the infobox, certain sections, bulleted lists for example, are pushed to below the end of the infobox, leaving an often large gap of whitespace. How do we force the bulleted lists (and other affected content) to the left of the infobox, and avoid this whitespace? See this version of the Beta Upsilon Chi article for an example. Jax MN (talk) 18:01, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- We may have fixed it with a workaround, see Beta Upsilon Chi, but I'm still unclear on the correct structure. Does bracketing the bulleted list with col-begin and then with a closing col-end tag trigger the correct formatting? One of our fellow editors removed an especially long field within the infobox, which may also have had an effect. Jax MN (talk) 18:09, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

Empty and missing values of parameters
Suppose that there's a template that has this parameter:
{{#if:{}|AAA|BBB}}
It would output "AAA" if the parameter {} has any value, and "BBB" if the parameter is empty or missing.
template
→ BBB
→ BBBvalue
→ AAA
Is there a way to make it treat an "empty" value as a value, and not as a lack thereof? In effect, that would produce:
template
→ BBB
→ AAAvalue
→ AAA

Referencing errors on Norderney
Reference help requested.
Hi, i would like to post a reference to the DWD (Deutscher Wetterdienst) Open data page. But i don`t know how to that in wikipedia. This is the file i`m refering to, it is a zip file https://opendata.dwd.de/climate_environment/CDC/observations_germany/climate/daily/kl/historical/tageswerte_KL_03631_18580301_20221231_hist.zip
I found much older weather data here for the island of Norderney, going back to 1858 while temperature measurements commencing in September 1897.
While the present climate data records in the table start from 1947 onwards.
Can you help me out?

Closing the Media Viewer is impossible?
Hello. I noticed some issue with the Media Viewer of MW (i'm sure: this problem was not happened in the past). I cannot close it when i opened it after scrolling the page down (i mean going back to the article, not disabling it), because the page header covers it's close button. Are there any way to hide the header when the media viewer is opened? (This is a serious bug, it'll be better if someone can hide it when it's opened for everyone, not with some user-script.)
