Suspected sockpuppets

Suspicion because of recent flurry of activities of a number of IP editors that overlap with Laynehole and previously blocked users - these editors show the same interest in Green Day, The Who, Smashing Pumpkins and others, and has the same pattern of behaviour of adding false certifications and award won by the bands, e.g. on American Idiot [1][2][3][4]. There are many more IP editors but it may not be worth listing them as they appear to be IP hopping.

False certifications - [5][6][7][8] [9][10][11][12] compared with preiously blocked users - [13][14][15][16]

False awards won - [17][18] compared with previously blocked editors - [19][20][21] Hzh (talk) 23:30, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets

These edits concentrated largely on articles on Green Day, giving false information on certifications, sales and awards won - [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. The IP addresses come from different countries, one from an IP address range previously blocked [30]. There are probably more because I only checked a few of the articles normally targeted by this editor. The edits are similar to those by previously blocked editors- [31][32][33][34][35][36]. Suspected sockpuppets

The main reason for suspicion is that Fresnosayno made identical edit as previously blocked editors -

Fresnosayno however then moved to The Beatles article, which appears to be something new, and the Rolling Stones although still making random certification numbers as before - [41][42] (compared to similar edits by blocked editors on Green Day [43][44] and Smashing Pumpkins [45])

Fresnosayno appears to be linked to a spate of IP editors from random countries who made the same kind of edits around the same time on the Beatles and Rolling Stones articles [46][47][48]

The IP editor 210.1.93.22 also made similar edits to previously blocked editors on The Who - [49] [50] (same blocked range as before) Hzh (talk) 23:25, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Add another two who added false certification like others - [51][52][53]. Hzh (talk) 20:35, 8 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

More random IP editors but same kind of edits as above - [54][55], similar to previously blocked editors on Green Day discography - [56][57]. Hzh (talk) 20:14, 8 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yet another, but this time also on awards - [58], again something seen before by blocked socks- e.g. [59]

Add more, similar or near identical edits from IPs from different countries, this time on Smashing Pumpkins discography - [60][61][62]

Same pattern of behaviour, making false certifications on discography pages, similar edits with previously blocked socks - e.g.

There are also similar edits from a large number edits from a wide range of IP addresses in different countries in these articles, for example on Green Day discography [67][68][69][70], probably the same editor IP hopping via proxies to many countries, and difficult to do anything about them. Suspected sockpuppets

Editors appear to be the same person who repeatedly add false certifications in various discography articles. The edits are similar to each other and to previously blocked socks -

  • compare Signess77 and Ringorocks999 - [71][72]
  • Ringorocks999 and blocked sock Fresnosayno - [73][74]
  • Neoleo66 uses a tactic seen before, make one edit as another, then pretending to revert edit - [75] but you can see that over the two edits, misinformation remains - [76]. Compared with 37.229.138.88 pretending to undo edits of Signess77 [77] , but on checking false information is left over the two edits - [78]

Edits also similar to many edits from various countries - the editor appears to be IP hopping using proxies - [79] [80] [81][82][83] Hzh (talk) 19:27, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets

Appears to be the same person who has been adding false certification and chart information for the past few years. Similar or identical edits on same articles, and similar pattern of behavior.

  • Godshem - [84], near identical to previously blocked sock - [85]
  • Townmoon8 - [86][87][88], similar or identical as previous sock - [89][90]. Also shows same pattern of behaviour of adding false information, then revert as another editor while deliberately introducing false information [91][92]. Compare with such previous pairs of edits [93] [94], and [95][96]
  • Babycool234 - [97], again similar edit to [98]
  • 62.219.195.82 - appears to be one of numerous IPs from various countries the same editor has been using. Introduced false information as before - [99], note also the same pattern of behaviour working in tandem with Townmoon8, adding false information then revert while introducing new ones as another editor - [100][101], Hzh (talk) 11:41, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Same pattern of behaviour of someone who has done this for many years, adding false certification to the same discography articles. Similar edits to previously blocked socks - e.g. compare Stingdedoo and Antoinejlice to Nicktheknife4 and Townmoon8. The editor uses numerous proxies, just two of them given here because they unlike the others were used for more than one edit, e.g. 42.116.89.53, and 95.56.204.252 compared to Nicktheknife4. Follow similar editing patterns to recently confirmed socks such as Dontsting53, Asertain1984, Solomoandy and Karenjay777, by inflating certifications and adding false information relating to Police albums [129], [130], [131]. In addition, the user Hgregg2 is already blocked, but should be checked to see if they are another sock of this vandal, to add to the category of confirmed socks, as they made exactly the same edits before being blocked [132]. Some edits identical with previously blocked socks, e.g. compare [203] by Sirloinmann and [204] by IP editor 2001:861:3a01:31c0:3438:3696:4e79:c000 with [205] by Bluebuglove. Most the edits from the IP range appear to target pages related to The Police and Pearl Jam, and most share similar pattern of introducing false information to the articles by previously blocked socks. Also request at Talk:List of best-selling music artists to change sales figures similar to other previous requests - [206] [207]. All edits from the IP range appear to be from the same person. Hzh (talk) 18:22, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Added Sheelabrof since the pattern of edit is the same as Sirlionmann and others - [208][209] [210]. Hzh (talk)

Added Bishodoe, edit similar to other socks - [211][212]. Hzh (talk) 07:52, 30 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Although Materialscientist protected pages such as Zenyatta Mondatta and Every Breath You Take: The Singles on September 23 due to multiple socking by this user, one of their sock accounts remains open, and they are using it to make the same types of edits as their previous socks by exaggerating certification levels of albums by the Police – compare [213] with [214], and [215] with [216] and [217]. Knopfler56's recent edit at the List of best-selling music artists is very similar to the previous edits like this one for example [218]. Also note how this user deliberately pushed the number of his/her edits to 500+, in order to be able to edit/disrupt those pages which can only be edited by those editors with minimum of 500 edits. to Knopfler56 and Bestguyhi. The block log indicates that Elarapeme is a Никита-Родин-2002 sock, but I'm not seeing any evidence of that myself in the CU data. @Clpo13: anything you can add here? -- RoySmith (talk) 17:46, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I edit-conflicted with Roy while writing this comment, so posting it again... These accounts are behaviourally indistinguishable from Никита-Родин-2002, and I find it hard to believe that more than one person would be this obsessed with fiddling with the numbers on The Police articles. Either they moved, or someone's playing copycat. I've updated the tags for Bestguyhi and Knopfler56 to reflect the technical relationships between these accounts, but I don't think it's necessary to split the case at this time - it's not possible to tell the two groups apart on behaviour, and I don't think it really matters whether someone's really a LTA or just impersonating one - the accounts should be blocked anyway. Spicy (talk) 18:08, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I dug some more into the CU logs of several stale confirmed socks from the past year or two. Based on what I found, I'm more inclined to agree that these are all Никита-Родин-2002. @AmandaNP: recalling our conversation yesterday evening about how much faith to put in the logs, could you look at my notes here and let me know if you consider that enough to call these confirmed? -- RoySmith (talk) 19:01, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(To be clear, my above comment was based on reading the recent archived cases and the LTA page. If the archives have two different cases mixed up, as Sro23 said, my comments on the relationship to the master don't apply. What a mess...). Spicy (talk) 21:14, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've been slogging my way back in time through the CU logs. I'm seeing confirmed socks on the same IP ranges as Knopfler56 et al all the way back to October 2017, and on similar ranges for the same ISP that geolocate to the same area as far back as March 2016. -- RoySmith (talk) 21:34, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And LenovoTest01 from Sro23's second group below falls into that "similar ranges" cluster. -- RoySmith (talk) 21:40, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Maybe this can help clear up confusion. There appears to be two distinct sockfarms within the archives. One group, the main group which includes this most recent sock, will insert certification and sales hoaxes into articles, main targets being The Who, Green Day, The Police, etc. Example socks include
  • Solomoandy (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · spi block · block log · CA · CheckUser(log· investigate · cuwiki)
  • Lgccap (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · spi block · block log · CA · CheckUser(log· investigate · cuwiki), and
  • Zhuwazi78 (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · spi block · block log · CA · CheckUser(log· investigate · cuwiki). The second, smaller group, which includes the original User:Никита-Родин-2002 account, had significantly worse English skills than the bigger group, and it was originally blocked per CIR. This is the group with the cross-wiki issues. Its main focus was Russian language and certain cartoon related articles. Example socks include
  • Nikitarodin2002 (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · spi block · block log · CA · CheckUser(log· investigate · cuwiki),
  • LenovoTest01 (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · spi block · block log · CA · CheckUser(log· investigate · cuwiki) and
  • ZOKIDIN (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · spi block · block log · CA · CheckUser(log· investigate · cuwiki). This second group appears to be inactive for some time now. I'm still not sure why these two sockfarms were ever merged, as the behavior is quite different. Sro23 (talk) 18:44, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • The socks I was looking at the logs for include Strawberryseed08, Billycooper3, Godlove38, and Zenyattasting, all of which match the logs for Solomoandy and Zhuwazi78. And it's a little murkier, but I think they do not match the second group. -- RoySmith (talk) 19:14, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like the cases were merged in 29 February 2020 by Berean Hunter who unfortunately looks to no longer be active. See Special:Permalink/943253927. -- RoySmith (talk) 19:24, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's entirely possible that we've been tracking two different socks for years and now the trail is so deeply intertwined it's impossible to tease them apart. Certainly, the data that's in cuwiki from 2017-2018 (ruwikibooks, loginwiki, and metawiki) doesn't match what I'm seeing now in any way. Yet, I can track IP ranges on some confirmed socks way back to 2016. That supports the two sock theory in my mind. Having chewed on this for a while, I'm going to close it and move on. Everybody of interest is blocked. I think the dual-tagging Spicy did makes the most sense given our imperfect information and I don't see anything to be gained by additional archeology. -- RoySmith (talk) 23:29, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I initially reported both this user and Knopfler56 due the similarities in their gaming behaviour. I then removed it due to lack of evidence. However, since seeing that Knopfler56 is a confirmed sock, I am now resubmitting this, since this users behaviour was very similar to theirs. Checkuser requested, since it seems to regularly turn up sleepers with this sockmaster. Mako001 (talk) 10:10, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm doubtful about CD 2022 whose edit do not fit the normal pattern. The following editor, however do, so I'm adding it to be checked. Hzh (talk) 11:13, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hzh, If it helps, most of their contribs are deleted. After the first few edits there were about 500 userspace dummy edits and then a couple of mainspace edits. the userspace edits were between the last edit on the 5th and the first on the 11th, all within an hour or two. (so I recall anyway, since the specific contribs are deleted.) Knopfler56 did much the same thing? Does this fit the pattern or is there some other way that it doesn't fit? Mako001 (talk) 11:53, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is the first time I have seen the editor make so many dummy edits, so that is not typical. In the past the editor may make some dummy edits, but not so many. The edits by CD 2022 that remained don't fit the pattern, while those by Knopfler56 do fit. Hzh (talk) 18:30, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Clerks. I'm moving this to a different SPI. I have found a much more likely sockmaster. Moving to the ConsumersDistributing SPI. Hzh, I will definitely trust your intution a lot more from now on! Mako001 (talk) 08:32, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@The Alternate Mako I appreciate your help, but please leave case moves to clerks. Sometimes it gets complicated and clerks have the right training to know how to deal with all the odd situations. Thanks. -- RoySmith (talk) 18:32, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like the same person inflating the certified sales of The Police at the List of best-selling music artists as they've done before, diff. Notice how they've deliberately made 500 edits in their sandbox in order to be able to edit the List of best-selling music artists, which can be edited by only extended confirmed users. A recent rash of editors who targeting The Green Day pages as well a The Police, inflating their album sales and certifications, sometimes pretending to correct another edit they made themselves while introducing more false information.

[226] [227] [228] [229] [230] [231] [232] [233] [234] [235] [236] [237] There are probably more of them.

Seems like the person is returning the the Green Day discography article after a period of absence there, edits similar to those by previously blocked editors - [238] [239][240]. Hzh (talk) 17:48, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Added another IP address that may be possibly the same person since the person is known to make request in that talk page - [241][242][243]. Hzh (talk) 16:52, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
