US ionization deaths[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. signed, Rosguill talk 21:31, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think this redirect was supposed to be US iodination deaths (or maybe US iodization deaths)? Ionization is very different from iodination, and the former is not mentioned at the target article. The article that would discuss this would be Acute radiation syndrome, but deaths are not discussed there in the context of the United States, so delete unless an alternative target can be identified. Mdewman6 (talk) 23:55, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete as they are two similarly-spelled words with different meanings, therefore the redirect is misleading. —Lights and freedom (talk ~ contribs) 00:33, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete death by irradiation is different from death by chemical poisoning or death by nutrient deficiency -- 67.70.25.80 (talk) 02:23, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete misleading redirect/unlikely search term. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 03:12, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move I made an obvious error. If I had rename without redirect I could do this without help. Invasive Spices (talk) 00:15, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Generally redirects aren't moved; this one should just be deleted and the correct form created if desired. However, I don't think we need the correct form of this redirect as there is a single sentence and a single ref about this topic at the target section; having a redirect implies this is not such a minor topic. Mdewman6 (talk) 17:09, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Redirects do not imply that. Redirects are the WP:CHEAPest thing Wikipedia has. Invasive Spices (talk) 21:57, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Speedy move per Invasive Spices. I see nothing that would prevent an admin from moving the current redirect. Ping me, I'll do it. BD2412 T 20:22, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, agreeing with Mdewman6. There is not enough at the target to sustain a redirect on US iodization deaths. -- Tavix (talk) 21:50, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The Cave Game[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was retarget to The Cave (video game). signed, Rosguill talk 21:31, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The Cave (video game) also exists and is a lot more notable than the working title for Minecraft, and I've never seen anyone put "the" in front of it. Aaron Liu (talk) 23:33, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete Colossal Cave Adventure is also called "Cave" and is a game, and is the most likely target for such a redirect of those presented here -- 67.70.25.80 (talk) 02:25, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Does anyone have a source saying that "Cave" is an alternative name for Adventure? Aaron Liu (talk) 18:05, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Retarget per nom --Lenticel (talk) 02:53, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget as nominated. "The cave game" for Minecraft makes no sense, as it is possible to play without going into caves. ~Anachronist (talk) 03:17, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Anachronist While under development Minecraft was called "Cave Game", but this is only mostly known inside that community and nobody adds "the" in front of it. Aaron Liu (talk) 03:25, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Overly vague. Search function exists for a reason. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 19:13, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget per nomination. Minecraft is called Cave Game, but a redirect should not exist for the appension of "the", as it would open a "Pandora's Box". However, redirects do exist for the appension of "game", such as Fortnite game. –CopperyMarrow15 (talk | contributions) 16:41, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Country data Türkiye[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was keep. Kar yağıyor! (non-admin closure) CLYDE TALK TO ME/STUFF DONE (I will not see your reply if you don't mention me) 06:34, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Despite repeated discussions at Talk:Turkey, a page name that always makes me smile, editors continue to insert "Türkiye" into articles and to use the non-WP:COMMONNAME country name via this redirect. I fixed all of the transclusions in article space in May 2023, and it is back in 12 articles less than two months later.

I am 100% positive that the redirect was created in good faith, but it is being abused and should be deleted to enforce the repeated discussions that resulted in the consensus that "Turkey" is the WP:COMMONNAME of this country on en.WP. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:55, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: Is there a way something can redirect to a template while invoking one of the parameters? Or more precisely, I wouldn't have an issue with this redirect if it could display as "Turkey" instead of "Türkiye" when transcluded. If it were transcluded as {{Country data Türkiye|name=Turkey}} and used in {{flag}}, for example, it would render something like  Turkey, which is pretty much how its target renders, as opposed to rendering with Türkiye in its output as it currently does TartarTorte 19:02, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep If someone is POV warring and replacing instances of {{country data Turkey}} with this version, that's the problem that should be addressed. We have redirects for {{country data Cote d'Ivoire}}, {{country data Czechia}}, and {{country data Timor-Leste}}, so this seems fine too. And FWIW, I would not favor moving Turkey. --BDD (talk) 20:49, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep It's an alternative name whether you like it or not. The redirect is fine. - Presidentman talk · contribs (Talkback) 21:49, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep viable alternate spelling present in English; regardless of how main article is spelled, it doesn't mean that useful alternate spelling redirects should be deleted -- 67.70.25.80 (talk) 02:32, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: It seems that much like Czechia and Côte d'Ivoire, among others, noted above, that this name ends up being used with the flag in situations that would not violate WP:COMMONNAME. It seems that a number of sporting organizations (FIFA, UEFA, and IIHF as examples) use the name aforementioned names as well as Türkiye, and it seems that generally on articles specifically about that (for example Czechia's usage throughout international hockey pages as of 2021, when the IIHF changed their name to Czechia). With this same standard being held, there is probably some utility in using {{flag|Türkiye}} on a soccer related page as that seems to be the teams name in international competitions. TartarTorte 12:56, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. The existence of this as a redirect actually reinforces the consensus that "Turkey is the WP:COMMONNAME of this country". Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 11:33, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - redirect from an alternate name is what redirects are for. A7V2 (talk) 01:00, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was retarget to Soca per WP:SNOW. (non-admin closure) J947edits 08:30, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure about this one. Should it target the Soca dab page, and/or should it then be the primary topic there? There is more than one SOCA. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 03:52, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Retarget to Soca, I don't think a government agency which hasn't existed for ten years is likely to be the primary topic for this. The redirect was created when the agency existed, and it would have made a lot more sense then. Hut 8.5 16:46, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to soca as that is the disambiguation page that should list them -- 67.70.25.80 (talk) 02:31, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Common enough term during the 2017 general election and thereafter, but isn't mentioned in the article itself. Considering a redirect to strong and stable, as that mentions the term in the title of a book. Or 2017 United Kingdom general election, which mentions criticism of May as robotic... Thoughts? GnocchiFan (talk) 23:50, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think the current target works, but perhaps John Crace (writer) (who probably invented "Maybot"; at least I learned the word from him) is another option. —Kusma (talk) 18:24, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Retarget to List of nicknames of prime ministers of the United Kingdom#Theresa May, which mentions it explicitly. Hut 8.5 16:42, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hut 8.5: But that isn't helpful to the reader. If they look up an alternative name of something, a list entry explaining what the alternative name means isn't as helpful as what the alternative name actually refers to. Edward-Woodrow :) [talk] 15:53, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is helpful to the reader. I don't think it's that likely that someone who types in "Maybot" is interested in Theresa May in general, it's more likely that they are interested in the term itself - what it means, where it comes from, or perceptions of Theresa May as robotic. The list entry is much better at doing this than the general article, which doesn't mention the term at all. Hut 8.5 19:59, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
