Sanic the hedgehog[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. The rough consensus is that confusion with the meme takes priority over the plausible {{R from typo}}. Deryck C. 08:18, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yet another Internet meme, not suitable as a redirect. ~GottaGoFast Stepitup 21:19, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - Keep per WP:CHEAP. --Jax 0677 (talk) 00:52, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Tag as {{R from typo}} and repoint to Sonic the Hedgehog -- 67.70.32.20 (talk) 05:43, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Plausible typo. Canuck89 (what's up?) 07:31, July 14, 2015 (UTC)
  • delete I question how plausible it is as a typo, given how far away from each other 'a' and 'o' are on the keyboard, but in any case the name is already taken by the meme, which we do not discuss. To redirect this is therefore misleading. Let Google or Bing deal with the the spelling error in this instance. Mangoe (talk) 12:44, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak delete. The A and O keys are far apart on a keyboard. We should look in reliable sources to see if this misspelling is used. This redirect could be seen as misleading, which makes the reliability of the name the meme uses questionable. SONIC678|Hang out with me! 01:04, 16 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, yeah it's a typo but not a plausible one. "Sanic the Hedgehog" is different than "Sonic the Hedgehog" so someone searching it is probably going to be looking for the meme and be disappointed. -- Tavix (talk) 15:40, 21 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per Tavix. That is what I was thinking about how to say. WP:SURPRISE. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 15:46, 21 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sanic and taels[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete, same summary as above. Deryck C. 08:19, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Internet meme, not an appropriate redirect. The meme also does not refer directly to Sonic Chaos. ~GottaGoFast Stepitup 21:17, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - Keep per WP:CHEAP. --Jax 0677 (talk) 00:52, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • delete as misleading, given that we don't describe the meme. Mangoe (talk) 12:42, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per Mangoe. Not worth keeping as an {{R from misspelling}} either given that it has two implausible typos. 58.176.246.42 (talk) 13:35, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete I doubt that someone looking this up would make both spelling errors simultaneously.--67.68.29.1 (talk) 13:39, 16 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak delete. The A and O keys are far apart on a keyboard, and the E and I keys are also far apart (even though they're closer together than the A and O keys). Do any reliable sources use either one of these misspellings? SONIC678|Hang out with me! 19:08, 16 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - no article about the meme, and an implausible typo for anything else. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 15:47, 21 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Britbrit[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was after having a discussion with the redirect's creator, I have decided to withdraw. Is the redirect ambiguous? Probably, but after a through search, I've concluded that Britney Spears is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for the nickname. I'm expanding Britney (disambiguation) (the target of the hatnote) to include "Brit" and that should solve the problem. You can see the discussion here: User talk:Tavix#Britbrit. (non-admin closure) -- Tavix (talk) 15:22, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"Britbrit" could easily be a nickname for anyone at Brittany (name) or for a British person. Since it's not explicitly mentioned as a nickname anywhere, I think it'd be better to delete it. -- Tavix (talk) 20:13, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • But it could mean anyone or anything at Brit, not just Britney Spears. -- Tavix (talk) 21:11, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete per my rationale below at "hockey sur glace". Canuck89 (have words with me) 07:32, July 14, 2015 (UTC)
  • Delete. We do not need to create a redirect from every individual foreign-language translation of a common noun — if somebody needs to know how to say "ice hockey" in Spanish or French, that's one of the things the interlangs are for. Bearcat (talk) 20:25, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hockey sur glace[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete. Deryck C. 13:17, 21 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Delete per WP:RFD#D8 and WP:RFOREIGN. Ice hockey doesn't have any affinity with French. as it is an obscure synonym for "ice hockey". -- Tavix (talk) 20:05, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete - hockey might have affinity with French, the modern game having been significantly influenced by French Canadians and native inhabitants of Québec and Acadia, and certainly part of the culture. But it's not known by this name, it's just le hockey. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 20:50, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Ivanvector: I appreciate that explanation. I feel kind of dumb right now because my mind went straight to France, the country, instead of the French language. I'm going to split these and update my rationale if you don't mind. Feel free to expand the Spanish one if you'd like. -- Tavix (talk) 21:21, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for splitting and adding my !vote above. Just to clarify I think that WP:RFOREIGN does apply here, because this would be somewhat obscure even in French. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 21:39, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
To be fair, believe it or not "hockey sur glace" is the title that the article about ice hockey is actually located at on fr:. (Even in that language, after all, it still does have to be dabbed from the field and roller and sledge and street varieties.) But of course that fact has no bearing on whether the term is necessary as a redirect on en:. Bearcat (talk) 14:58, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete' per Ivanvector. Besides le hockey seems to be the more common synonym. --Lenticel (talk) 00:57, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak Keep Affinity for French, the modern game was first played in Montreal, a French Canadian location, though in Canadian French, the game is usually called "hockey" leaving the longer form for international events where French people who don't know hockey call it "hockey sur glace". -- 67.70.32.20 (talk) 05:35, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete While the game might be known as "hockey sur glace" by some French-speakers, I'm going to agree with WP:RFOREIGN's rationale on this: This is English Wikipedia - we're not going to create redirects for every single word in the French language (eg, Adresse is a red-link, instead of redirecting to Address). "Hockey" is the French word for hockey, anyway, so French-speakers entering the term in the search bar can be directed to our Hockey article. Canuck89 (talk to me) 07:30, July 14, 2015 (UTC)
  • Delete: This being the English Wikipedia, not the French one, I can't imagine how this could possibly be a plausible search term. (Never mind, as stated above, that it's not a plausible search term in French.) Ravenswing 14:57, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • While there are certainly contexts where we should maintain a redirect from the French-language term for a topic (specifically the proper names of places, films, books, etc. for which the French language title is important information), we don't need to create a redirect from every single French-language term for a common noun. This is admittedly the title that the equivalent article on fr: is located at, but that's what the interlangs are for — a redirect sitting directly on en:'s server isn't necessary. Delete. This is the name of a telenovela. Obviously the current target isn't good, but what should we do with it? It's mentioned at Telenovela, Ramón Orlando, and List of telenovelas. Is one of the targets better than the others? Or should we delete this per WP:REDLINK and/or WP:XY? -- Tavix (talk) 19:02, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete - Spanish Wikipedia doesn't have this. I think that this would be an unlikely search to end up at Telenovela, and the other two suggested targets don't have any information about this beyond the title. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 20:01, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete If the telenovela is notable (not impossible, [1] calls it "the first successful Dominican telenovela", and [2] says it was quite popular in reruns), it should have its own article and making it a redlink would encourage creation. If it's not notable, the title shouldn't redirect to just one of the several notable people involved with it, nor a list which is supposed to be restricted to notable entries. 58.176.246.42 (talk) 03:49, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

These are all outdated redirects. The projects these refer(red) to are no longer untitled and is or could be confusing if/when these people embark on other projects. -- Tavix (talk) 18:38, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was delete all. Retargeting to Bigfoot#Scientific view is suggested but the consensus for that is uncertain, so default to delete. Deryck C. 09:34, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think this is helpful as a redirect. It should imply there is a section listing out arguments for/against the existence of Bigfoot, but the article doesn't have anything like that. Delete per WP:RFD#D2 because it's confusing. -- Tavix (talk) 18:03, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Do either one of two things: 1) delete per WP:RFD#D2 because these redirects could be seen as confusing, or 2) retarget them all to Bigfoot#Scientific view, where some evidence for/against Bigfoot's existence is discussed. SONIC678|Hang out with me! 20:51, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Suicide attempt[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was move article over redirect. Deryck C. 09:22, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think this redirect should be the other way around. The redirect as-is is a little redundant; I mean, if one succeeded at suicide, it thus wouldn't be an "attempt", would it? Erpert blah, blah, blah... 07:06, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment pedantically, yes, it would still be an "attempt", if it were successful, it would be a successful attempt -- 67.70.32.20 (talk) 07:24, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to suicide. The failed suicide attempt itself pipes "suicide attempt" to suicide. This topic also seems to be duplicated at parasuicide, which was the original target. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 15:04, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to suicide per Ivanvector --Lenticel (talk) 00:45, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Failed suicide attempt. The Failed suicide attempt article should simply be titled Suicide attempt, since suicide attempts are usually about the failed ones. The successful ones are usually simply called "suicide." Flyer22 (talk) 03:59, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • Isn't that the target already? WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:11, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
      • WhatamIdoing, I'm not sure what you mean, especially since my "03:59, 14 July 2015 (UTC)" post correlates with your "19:46, 14 July 2015 (UTC)" post. Flyer22 (talk) 13:36, 21 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
        • I believe that "retarget to Failed suicide attempt" is usually understood to mean "Suicide attempt currently redirects to something else, and I believe that it ought to redirect to Failed suicide attempt." Which it already does ...and you can't re-target something to its current target. The options are "leave it alone" or "re-target to some other page". WhatamIdoing (talk) 15:22, 21 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note: I alerted WP:Med to this discussion. Flyer22 (talk) 04:05, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • retarget per Flyer22 and Erpert ,--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 10:33, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support the proposal as I understand it. That is, Suicide attempt appears to be a redirect. Failed suicide attempt appears to be the article. The article ought to be at plain, unqualified "Suicide attempt". "Failed suicide attempt" should redirect to the shorter name. My reasons for this are two: in typical English sources, "suicide attempt" is the most common name for an event in which someone attempts, but does not complete, suicide. This language includes those situations in which someone intentionally discontinued a suicide attempt as well as those who accidentally survived it. Also, English sources are moving away from "failed" and "successful" language, so the old name feels outdated. WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:46, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was keep. I'm surprised too, but we've established that this redirect is correct and therefore should be kept. Deryck C. 13:32, 21 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure how this is a legitimate redirect to anything - I'm not sure how anyone would even type a Greek letter "mu" in English. MSJapan (talk) 01:45, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Addendum - is there any way to find out if this is some sort of prevalent typographical issue and take care of any other articles that may have this problem as well? MSJapan (talk) 03:58, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • OK, so I know what this is - it's a legitimate statistical term for Micropolitan Statistical Area, but I'm not sure if it should be redirecting to a single county level (most are in more than one, and there aren't many), or if we should even have it, because it's not easily reproducible as a search term. Most instances of <X mSA> redirect to <X Micropolitan Statistical Area>, but we don't have an article on that in this instance. MSJapan (talk) 04:23, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete very weird, very unlikely typo -- 67.70.32.20 (talk) 07:28, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. According to the target, Genesee County is coterminous with the Batavia μSA, making this a very reasonable redirect. It is neither weird nor a typo. Even people who can’t type Greek letters can copy and paste them into Wikipedia’s search box. Gorobay (talk) 13:49, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Gorobay: μSA = micropolitan statistical area. It's right in the lede. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 15:01, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment As far as I'm aware, these redirects exist for MSAs across the United States, so deleting this one and keeping the others won't solve anything. RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 19:42, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep "μSA" is the abbreviation for "micropolitan statistical area". Having a Greek letter in there looks kind of weird, but given that's how it's done, this redirect seems okay. Canuck89 (chat with me) 07:35, July 14, 2015 (UTC)
