Why is a wikipedia page deleted?[edit]

There was a wikipedia page created (not by me) about the music composer Tôn_Thất_An in English, and it has been deleted. Will we be able to restore it, and may I check why was it deleted? Thank you. Angieetc (talk) 05:01, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Angieetc: It doesn't appear there has ever been a page by that exact name in the English Wikipedia, though there is one in Vietnamese. If you navigate to a deleted page, there should be a reason for its deletion provided - you should first contact the administrator who deleted the article if you have concerns about its deletion after you review the reason. Tollens (talk) 05:44, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There most definitely was an English Wikipedia by that exact name. And thus, the reason for my question. That English Wikipedia page of that person is completely gone like it never existed and I am curious as to why and how. Could someone have deleted it from the "source" so it appeared like it never existed? Angieetc (talk) 07:29, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Only in very limited circumstances can a page be deleted without an entry being left in the log, and in all those cases undeletion of the page is not allowed - the situations where this could happen are listed at Wikipedia:Oversight#Policy. In all other cases, the page cannot be deleted without leaving an entry in the deletion log. This is the deletion log for that page, and there are no entries in it - the page cannot have existed in the past unless it fell under one of the five situations listed. If you are absolutely certain that the page both did exist and did not fall under any of the criteria listed, you can submit a complaint to the Arbitration Committee by following the instructions at WP:AUDIT. Tollens (talk) 08:06, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Tôn-Thất Tiết is also a composer and the closest I could find any sign of but it's not the same person. Ton That An (Q111296906) never had an enwiki link. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:30, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ton That An (Q111296906) says also known as Aaken so I tried that. Aaken was deleted way back in 2007, long before Wikidata was created. The creator was User:Aaken so probably an autobiography. The article only existed for 14 hours. It was indeed about Tôn Thất An (it called him An Tôn-Thât). PrimeHunter (talk) 09:39, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like User:Aaken also created Tôn-Thất Tiết - based on the nationality of each of them (found Tôn Thất An's website here), the shared surname, the apparent age of the two, their almost identical careers, and the external link "Website 2" on Tôn-Thất Tiết being an archive of a domain containing 'aaken', I assume Tôn Thất An is Tôn-Thất Tiết's son or grandson. Tollens (talk) 10:09, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ton That Tiet is Ton That An's father. And his page was linked to An's english wikipedia page. I started editing An's wikipedia page in Chinese and was using his English Wiki page as reference, hence am certain of its existence. We are not talking about Aaken so that is irrelevant. The page Ton That An in English used to exist, and it is now completely void of existence online, I find it thoroughly weird and baffling. Angieetc (talk) 11:03, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You made an edit [1] to the Chinese article in January. There are no signs it linked to an English Wikipedia page. I think you misremember or maybe misidentified a page you were looking at. If your browser has automatic machine translation to English then maybe you saw a translation of the Vietnamese article. If you know Vietnamese then maybe you saw that. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:07, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The gaslighting is real. lol. People would rather insist I misremember or misidentify. My first language is english and my computer's operating language is English, so if something is being translated into English, I would know. I really didn't appreciate your response to my question cos you added zero value in helping me solve or demystify my question, and instead gaslit me by saying I misremember. If you have nothing to add, then I'd rather not hear from you. Angieetc (talk) 07:58, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Angieetc, when highly experienced Wikipedia editors have engaged in a search of the English Wikipedia database, and have not found what you have described, it is more appropriate for you to thank them for their efforts, instead of hurling around "gaslighting" accusations. People here are not trying to drive you crazy. They are trying to assist you with your enquiry. Cullen328 (talk) 08:07, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Angieetc We can only tell you what we have found. Is it possible we have made a mistake? Sure, but if we have, we don't know what it is. We've accurately told you what we know regarding your question. This doesn't necessarily mean you are wrong either, only that we don't know what the explanation is. No one is "gaslighting" you. 331dot (talk) 08:15, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As an extension to what has been said so far, if this page did once exist somehow, it wasn’t for long, as there’s no evidence of it ever being listed in Tôn Thất. If it had existed long enough for an experienced editor to come across it (which is usually the first type of user to come across new articles), it would’ve most likely been added to that page by said user. Mugtheboss (talk) 09:43, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As another way to figure out whether you did see this page on the English Wikipedia, you might try searching your web browser's history - this would list the page if you did visit it. Tollens (talk) 09:56, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I note that archive.org has no record of such a page ever existing. Maybe you could try some other archiving services and see if you can find it that way. CodeTalker (talk) 18:11, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

hi ip user! do you have a question about Wikipedia? 💜  melecie  talk - 07:03, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
IP, I'm afraid that, at least from a quick look, there is no article about you. I would recommend you don't go try and create one as well. (Wikipedia:NOT, Wikipedia:COI, and Wikipedia:AUTO) Industrial Insect (talk) 18:35, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DYK Nom Source Requirement[edit]

I'm preparing my first DYK nomination, and I'd like some guidance as to providing the source. My source is behind a paywall, but is accessible via the Wikipedia Library from Newspapers.com. Unfortunately that site is currently unavailable from WL, so I can't include a link at this time. I'm personally still able to access it via Newsbank - should I include a quote, citation, and link to the Newsbank entry, or is a quote and citation sufficient enough? Or should I wait for Newspapers.com to be available and provide that link? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks! DrOrinScrivello (talk) 15:38, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DrOrinScrivello, I would include what you have, a quote, citation, and link to the Newsbank entry and note that you will link to Newspapers.com when it is available. There is generally a 7 day window for DYK nominations, so I would not advise waiting for Newspapers.com. If you have more questions about DYK nominations, you could ask at their talk page, WT:DYK. TSventon (talk) 16:06, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
TSventon thanks for your advice, I'll plan on doing just that. DrOrinScrivello (talk) 16:13, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

editing images in a table[edit]

The ability to right click an image in a table and bring up a box to edit that image has disappeared. This coincided with my update to macOS 14 sonoma. Gghbsab (talk) 16:04, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Gghbsab: Please given an example when you report a problem. I guess you refer to VisualEditor and an image at User:Gghbsab/sandbox. I have Windows and don't normally use VisualEditor but it works for me in Firefox to first double-click a cell to get a cursor and then single-click the image, all left-clicks. I don't know whether right-clicking did something before. In Windows browsers it usually activates something in the browser and not the website. uploading a fair use file[edit]

I have tried three times to upload https://image.slidesharecdn.com/janenickerson-121117055501-phpapp01/75/jane-nickerson-first-food-edtor-at-the-new-york-times-4-2048.jpg?cb=1670137070 to use at Jane Nickerson and the "upload file" button never goes live. I've filled out every box and the page just stares at me like I'm an idiot. Would someone else be willing to try to see if I've just neglected to notice something new about uploading fair-use files? Valereee (talk) 17:30, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Valereee: I am not aware of anything, no, and a quick check of WP:FUW didn't yield any bugs(Though I haven't actually pressed upload). I did note that the color difference between the enabled and disabled variants is rather subtle. I'd suggest that you go over it again from top to bottom and check that every field contains something meaningfull. Victor Schmidt (talk) 19:47, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Victor Schmidt: Hi there! When I use the WP:File Upload Wizard and click the "Upload a non-free file" box, I fill out all the required fields (those with the red asterisk). I then have to click outside of the last field where I entered text in order for that "Upload" button to go live. Sometimes it takes a moment for me to double check every field and make sure I populated them all. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:23, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
GoingBatty I believe you meant to ping Valereee rather than me. Victor Schmidt (talk) 07:04, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Victor Schmidt - Yes - sorry about that. Thanks for pinging Valereee for me. GoingBatty (talk) 13:51, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, GB (and Victor). I thought I'd done all that, but I'll try again! Valereee (talk) 10:49, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Figured it out! Don't know what I was doing wrong before, but it worked fine today, thanks again! Valereee (talk) 15:15, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Login trouble[edit]

Hello, I have not used my wikipedia login for many years but I want to start again. Trouble is I do not know the password and attempts to reset it do not work - I never subsequently receive anything from you. Perhaps you have a different email address?? In any case, how do I prove to you that I am the owner of the account so that this can be resolved? Thanks. 2607:FB91:20C7:C7B0:457D:3BF9:BECF:4CFC (talk) 18:04, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you don't have your password and the email recovery is not working, then there is nothing we can do. You will need to create a new account. You can add a note on your user page that you previously edited under the old username. RudolfRed (talk) 18:28, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Large amount of comic articles?[edit]

I am curious about how many comic book related articles we have, especially due to how many are on extremely obscure characters(Herbie Popnecker being an excellent example of this). Is this because these have simply just flown under the radar for so long? Industrial Insect (talk) 23:20, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

About 22000, assuming that WP:WikiProject Comics has laid claim to them all. —Cryptic 00:04, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
my gosh Industrial Insect (talk) 00:05, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Herbie Popnecker? The Fat Fury is not obscure, at least for American comics readers of a certain age. Now, Super-Hip: that's an obscure character. --Orange Mike | Talk 00:23, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
