May 21[edit]

Would anyone have an idea how to change the order of the monuments in the first caption? I thought... there is an image in the middle, and therefore it's not correct to use the order "clockwise from top". Page: Pescara. JackkBrown (talk) 01:46, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown: You can't change the photo layout unless you create a new montage like File:Pescara_Montage_2018.png. You can edit the info box to use better wording for the caption, if you like. RudolfRed (talk) 04:02, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: change the caption:
top: Port of Pescara and Gran Sasso d'Italia; centre: Palazzo Imperato, Fountain La Nave, Church of the Sacred Heart; bottom: Palazzo di Città, Aurum Museum
I'm not a fan of fixed montages like this as they cause difficulties like the one you're experiencing. There are other tools which could be used, such as multiple image. Bazza (talk) 09:18, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@RudolfRed: that's what I meant... JackkBrown (talk) 10:31, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bazza 7: thanks a lot! JackkBrown (talk) 13:18, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I’ve been accused of abusing multiple accounts, yet I only have one account, so what recourse do I have?[edit]

I’ve been accused of Sockpuppetry, yet nothing I’ve ever done is a in any way connected to abusing multiple accounts. This is a completely bogus charge, and I feel that I’ve been defamed. Gomerhodge9 (talk) 03:41, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

hi @Gomerhodge9 and welcome to the Help Desk! you do not seem to have been accused of sockpuppetry (and this seems to be your very first edit), however analyzing the edit filter logs you have tripped, you seem to have tripped a private LTA flag. is that what you meant? 💜  melecie  talk - 03:59, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I’m not well-versed in the lingo, but I suppose that could be the case. I’ve only ever done minor edits in completely good faith. Is it possible someone else has somehow hacked me (or something else to that effect)? Gomerhodge9 (talk) 04:04, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Gomerhodge9 Your edit history only has the two posts you posted here. Where did you make these minor edits? 331dot (talk) 06:15, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Links with unicode fails[edit]

The link you get from this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Västerbotten_cheese fails, the ”V” page is shown instead Replacing the ”ä” with ”a” works: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasterbotten_cheese

I conclude there are a bug in the URL generation from the title. 94.254.99.106 (talk) 09:32, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, my fault. The page I added it to deleted the ”ä”. Wikipedia works fine! 94.254.99.106 (talk) 09:35, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Creating Serebii.net[edit]

Hi! The page Serebii.net seems to have been created and deleted several times from 2006–2007, and was indefinitely protected from being recreated in 2012. However, I see no reason why it can't be recreated today as a redirect. In fact, it currently exists under a different name: Serebii (Website) redirects to Pokémon#Fan community.

As such, I would like to request that it be recreated. I'm not an administrator and as such can't do it myself, and am also not sure where to go to officially request these types of things. I know Wikipedia:Requested articles exists, but that seems to be for requesting other editors to write standalone pages. I only want to unprotect this page and make it into a redirect.

Thank you! Loytra (talk) 09:33, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

hi @Loytra and welcome to the Help Desk! you may create a draft at Draft:Serebii.net, which is not protected, and pass it through the usual Articles for creation process. Since this seems to be your first proper article (I apologize if I'm wrong), you might wanna read Your first article and Notability (as well as Reliable sources if you haven't yet, and if you had a review is still nice). happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 10:39, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@loytra: the above answer is wrong. request the redirect creation at the wikipedia:administrators' noticeboard. lettherebedarklight晚安 10:52, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I completely thought they were referring to making a new article, that's what HD/TH tunnel vision does to you. remind me to read sometimes. apologies for the answer!
actually, won't Requests for reduction in protection level work as well? happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 11:07, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Good morning, I would like to enrich the page dedicated to Gianni Morandi. If I copy the corresponding text from Wikipedia in Italian language, translate it and paste it here, is that allowed? JackkBrown (talk) 11:56, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown: Yes and no. A detailed answer can be found at Help:Translation. While content can be translated from another language, you must attribute where you got it from (usually via edit summary) and check to see that it complies with policies on this Wikipedia project, particularly verifiability.
Also please don't machine translate. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 12:51, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

programming element. valid?[edit]

There are lot of articles with on te wiki. బొమ్మ means image. Preview does not show anything. Is it okay to remove it? As of now i am commenting it out. రుద్రుడు చెచ్క్వికి (talk) 14:01, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

for example: https://te.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%E0%B0%95%E0%B1%8D%E0%B0%AF%E0%B1%82_%E0%B0%A1%E0%B1%87%E0%B0%9F%E0%B0%BE_%E0%B0%A8%E0%B0%BF%E0%B0%B0%E0%B1%8D%E0%B0%AE%E0%B0%BE%E0%B0%A3%E0%B0%82&oldid=3883088 రుద్రుడు చెచ్క్వికి (talk) 14:23, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@రుద్రుడు చెచ్క్వికి: This is the help desk for the English Wikipedia. You appear to be asking about some other Wikipedia. You will need to ask on their help desk, since different Wikipedias can have different policies and conventions. On the English Wikipedia, a construct like this would allow you to code a non-free image in a Draft article that will not appear until the draft is moved into the main namespace, or perhaps added to an article before moving it from mainspace back into draft space. This could be useful because non-free images are not permitted except in main space due to our extremely conservative interpretation of copyright law. -Arch dude (talk) 14:27, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@రుద్రుడు చెచ్క్వికి: I don't know Telugu but examined the background. The code originally [1] said . It means: If the namespace is called బొమ్మ (image) then add te:వర్గం:తొలగించవలసిన బొమ్మలు which is apparently a Telugu category for images nominated for deletion. If the namespace is not బొమ్మ then add te:వర్గం:తొలగించవలసిన వ్యాసములు which is another category for pages nominated for deletion. The Telugu Wikipedia currently has no namespace called బొమ్మ (image) so the condition would be false no matter where the code is. However, long ago Wikipedia changed the "Image" namespace to be called "File" (దస్త్రం in Telugu) because it can contain other types of files than images. If the code had said దస్త్రం (file) then it would have tested whether the proposed deletion was of a file and originally used it to decide which category to add. The current version of the code has removed the categories so it does nothing. I don't know the Telugu deletion processes or language so I'm not sure whether something should be done other than removing the currently broken code. File:0x10c_logo.png is probably in the Public Domain[edit]

I've already said this on WP:MCQ , so I'll just copy-paste the same thing here so I can get a faster answer:

The tag on File:0x10c_logo.png says that it's protected by copyright but I think that it's in the Public Domain. After reading commons:COM:TOO Sweden (the country the logo originated from) and commons:COM:TOO US , I'm pretty sure the logo does not meet the threshold of originality in both countries. Is it okay if I change the tag to Template:pd-textlogo ? Zbelios (talk) 14:33, 21 May 2023 (UTC

I am not an expert in such matters, but speaking as a disinterested passer-by, it looks pretty original to me – my former profession included elements of typography and graphics, and I don't recall ever seeing that particular 3-D lettering style, so it's not just using a common typeface. My rule-of-thumb for non-originality would be "can you describe the logo in a few words that would enable someone to duplicate it accurately?" Perhaps there are better ones. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.199.210.77 (talk) 15:15, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
" '0x10c' written with simple gray letters, extending into the background. "
Looks pretty simple to be copyrighted to me. Zbelios (talk) 15:45, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

2017 Wikitext Editor[edit]

Hello. Somehow I have activated the 2017 Wikitext Editor on my account and I have no idea how to fix it. Cherrell410 (talk) 15:05, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Cherrell410 See this link for what it is/was and how to turn it off. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:13, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am having an issue with the reference this page uses. If you click the link it says access restricted and the ref tag shows {EHAK|7438} as the ref. What is this? 2600:8801:CA05:EF00:D41E:2828:7AA7:A58D (talk) 18:59, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IP editor. It appears that the citation is now a dead link to an Estonian website and I can't find it at the Wayback machine. Some information on the village of Sarve is now at an Estonian statistics website with this search in English but I'm not sure what would be the best content to link to. Perhaps you would like to take a look and amend the article accordingly. Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:46, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can I make a page on "Tripper (Chess)" over redirect to Fairy chess pieces?[edit]

Alright, so, first things first, the Greek Wikipedia has an article on this piece, whereas the English Wikipedia has a redirect to the page on fairy pieces. Am I allowed to replace the redirect with a new article on this piece?

Signed, The Master of Hedgehogs (talk) 19:51, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The (first part of the) answer to all questions about "Can I make an article about XXX?" is "Can you find several reliable sources, wholly independent of the subject, each of which contains significant coverage of the subject?".
If the answer is "No", then you cannot make an acceptable article about the subject.
The Greek article el:Ταξιδευτής (σκάκι) contains only two citations, both to Chessvariants.org. I'm not sure whether Wikipedia would regard that as a reliable source (The Chess Variant Pages quotes a description of it as "run by hobbyists for hobbyists"), but in any case the pages in question say "This page is written by the game's inventor, Ralph Betza", which means that it is assuredly not an independent source. So what you should not do is translate the Greek article, without finding more sources.
It seems likely that the David Pritchard book would be acceptable as a source (it is published by a reputable publisher, though whether his role as the president of the BCVS would make it non-independent is not clear to me). But you would certainly need more sources, and preferably from writers unconnected with the society. ColinFine (talk) 21:42, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. The diagram on the Greek Wikipedia article shows a ship/boat Signed, The Master of Hedgehogs (talk) 19:51, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New template category not populating?[edit]

I recently created a new template, Template:27TeamBracket-3way (for a three-round knockout tournament with three competitors per match; see Celebrity Jeopardy! (2022 TV series) for an example) as well as a parent category, Category:27-Team bracket templates, which I added the new template to via its documentation, the same way that similar templates like Template:9TeamBracket-3way was added to a similar category. I'm aware there's sometimes a caching delay with categories, but it's been several days and it hasn't shown up, and the category has been tagged for speedy deletion as empty. What step have I missed? — stickguy (:^›)— || talk || 20:15, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think you've missed anything (i.e what you did should have worked), but you can force the caching issue to go away by WP:NULLEDITing the template. * Pppery * it has begun... 20:17, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that worked, thanks! — stickguy (:^›)— || talk || 20:20, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to locate WP initiaties?[edit]

Greetings,
How do I locate past and present WP initiatives? Today, I am specifically interested in an initiative from a few months ago called (I think) "She Said" or something similar.
Thank you for your help, Wordreader (talk) 21:31, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Wordreader: You can search the project namespace with wp: in front of a search. wp:"she said" doesn't give relevant results but wp:shesaid finds a tab at Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Loves Women linking to meta:Wiki Loves Women/SheSaid. Some initiatives are at Meta which is not searched by our search box but you can start a search at meta: where meta:SheSaid redirects to meta:Wiki Loves Women/SheSaid.
