Congressional Gold Medal Page & Addition of Ghost Army[edit]

I want to add the Ghost Army insignia to my entry about the awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal to the 23rd Headquarters that President Biden signed into law on 2/1/22. The file ghostarmypatch.jpg already resides on Wikipedia. How can I import this file to the Congressional Gold Medal Page? Hello, GoingBatty. Thank you for help with my addition to the List of Congressional Gold Medal recipients. My deceased father was a Ghost Army soldier and I have been active with the Ghost Army Legacy Project. Your contributions to Wikipedia are manifold and much appreciated. Where have I gone wrong?

EnlightenmentNow1792 (talk) 02:02, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@EnlightenmentNow1792: I have fixed the nomination. For the correct procedure, please see WP:AFDHOWTO. You seem to have failed at step 2, by using the wrong template substitution (AFD nomination pages should be created using {{subst:afd2|pg=Page Name|cat=M, O, B, S, W, G, T, F, or P|text=Nomination statement}}. I have also transcluded the Nomination to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2022 February 5. In future maybe consider to use Twinkle for these, as it automates the proccess and handles all the nessesary steps for you. Victor Schmidt (talk) 08:32, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question about contributions to other Wikipedias[edit]

I was looking at my own contributions at the German Wikipedia, and noticed that some of them, mostly earlier ones, had edit summaries in English. I try to make it a point to always write the edit summary in the local language of the Wikipedia in question, provided I understand the language in the first place. I very much doubt I have forgot so many times which Wikipedia I'm at. So there are two theories: either some process has translated the edit summaries from German to English, or there has been some merging of my contributions here at the English Wikipedia to the German Wikipedia. Can anyone explain what has happened here? JIP | Talk 02:10, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

English Wikipedia pages were imported to the German Wikipedia with page histories before being translated. See page logs of the pages, e.g. [1]. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:17, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Random featured article within a category?[edit]

Hi, is there a way to get a random featured article within a category? I like the random featured article but sometimes they are bios or in categories I don't care about.

I am looking for a link format to either exclude certain categories or only show featured articles from a certain categories. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.237.248.228 (talk) 05:33, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Featured articles are going to have a WikiProject category on their talk pages, so you can use the returntype=subject feature of toolforge:RandomInCategory to choose pages with a particular category on their talk page, e.g.:

toolforge:RandomInCategory/FA-Class WikiProject Business articles?returntype=subject toolforge:RandomInCategory/GA-Class WikiProject Business articles?returntype=subject --Ahecht (TALK

Can sources that pose WP:OUTING concerns be used as references?[edit]

An IP recently made this edit, which includes a link to a Politico article that ties the name of a particular Wikipedia editor to the name of a real person. WP:OUTING would probably prohibit this sort of external linking on discussion pages that stated the exact same thing, but it's not clear to me that the text of the outing policy would require this to be suppressed in an article. Is there general guidance on how to handle this sort of thing? — Mhawk10 (talk) 06:50, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Mhawk10 As I understand it, WP:OUTING is strict on this, even when the "outer" is something we would generally consider a WP:RS, like say WSJ. I see this is in the Daily Mail now too. So linking these in any WP-space falls under WP:OUTING. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:33, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Bishonen, care to comment? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:37, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
An editor has been doxxed off-wiki. Per common sense, the most important thing we can do about that is surely to avoid linking to the doxxing, no matter if it occurs in an article or some other kind of page. Therefore, I have revision deleted some article edits. Not sure if I ought to revdel the mentions of particular media above as well, but that seems extreme. Bishonen | tålk 11:20, 5 February 2022 (UTC).[reply]
That is so. But since there's media-reports on COI-editing regarding a possible US supreme court judge, editors will want to edit/comment about it. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:58, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we have to do what we can to stop people from enabling doxxing on Wikipedia, even if there's nothing we can do about doxxing in the media. Also, those edits may need to be suppressed, rather than merely revdel'd. I've handed over to the oversighters; let them decide the way forward. Bishonen | tålk 13:36, 5 February 2022 (UTC).[reply]
The text has now been restored by another admin, who encourages discussion on talk if people want it gone. Discussing it is kind of not the point, IMO, but I guess the Streisand effect has kicked in. I give up. Bishonen | tålk 18:39, 5 February 2022 (UTC).[reply]
Yeah. I reverted the admin but it's been added again, sans name atm. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:47, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Applying Silverlock to the Mahatma Gandhi page[edit]

Hello, I would like to know how to appeal to the administrator of the Mahatma Gandhi page on the Simple English Wikipedia to apply WP:SILVERLOCK due to a spurt of vandalism on the page recently.

Hope you can help me soon. Thank you! Nsn2635 (talk) 10:31, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Nsn2635 Have you tried their Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:44, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nsn2635 We cannot help too much with issues on another version of Wikipedia. Each version is its own independent project, with their own policies and administrators. 331dot (talk) 10:46, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick reply! Will do. Nsn2635 (talk) 10:46, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Controversies On Company Pages[edit]

Hello

Is it wrong to add any of these cases to company pages if they are not attacks and are written using a neutral point of view? Also, what should the header be if none exists?

If the item is noteworthy enough and the source is reliable, then you can add the information, but be careful not to violate WP:UNDUE and WP:STRUCTURE. Also check to make sure the information isn’t already there. In the case of Cuties, your second link, there’s already extensive coverage of this in the Cuties article. For the Monster info, your first link, you could simply say in the history that the company received media coverage for internal charges of sexual discrimination. If the information is somewhat old, and there has been a resolution, it’s good to also include that so the issue isn’t left hanging. Keep in mind that adding negative information is something competitors like to do to articles, so you want to bend over backwards and avoid any perception that you’re trying to hurt the company’s image. How do I add an OCLC number for a book title?[edit]

I recently added a book title to the list of an author's works in her Wikipedia entry. The other books listed show an OCLC number. How do I find that number for the new title? It isn't shown on the publisher's website or on Amazon. Chippy Beagle (talk) 16:52, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

OCLC's catalogue is also known as WorldCat, so you would look the book up there to get the OCLC#. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 17:46, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Editing captions[edit]

There is a diagram in the article on Annie Montague Alexander, showing the scientific name of a species she discovered. There is a typo in the caption. I don't know how to edit this.Larry Dunn of Bakersfield (talk) 17:57, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Larry Dunn of Bakersfield: Hey! I have fixed it for you this time (unless I fixed a different typo). For the future, to fix a typo in a caption using the visual editor, you can click on the area right below the image and you should be able to edit the text. Using the source editor, you should be able to change the text after the last | character below* and edit the text used that way (the double apostrophes are used to make italics).

How to go to a line number?[edit]

When I use the facility to "compare versions" of an article from its history, it helpfully displays the additions, removals and changes. These are all indexed by line number. But very limited context, and I can't see any way to relate those line numbers to the contents. The one I am looking at now says material was added at line 1,041 which is way beyond what is practicable to count by hand. Is there any way to go to the affected line number, or nearby, so I can get the context?--Gronk Oz (talk) 23:51, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Gronk Oz: You can try ctrl+f if you're on a windows or cmd+f if you're on a mac and search for the text that way; that's what I usually do. Otherwise, your best bet is figuring out the context. Skarmory (talk • contribs) 01:38, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Skarmory: That is fine if there is unique text to look for, but in this case there isn't. (It is an ArbCom case, so the layout is hugely repetitive.) And the section which shows Changes just does not show enough context to identify it. If the change says "I strongly support (or oppose) this proposal..." then it is important to be able to work out which proposal they are talking about.--Gronk Oz (talk) 02:50, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. You can try copying in all text you can get, other than that I have no ideas. Skarmory (talk • contribs) 03:28, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Gronk Oz: wikEdDiff usually shows more context. It can be enabled at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. I have it enabled but usually hidden, and click a green triangle to see the wikEd diff when the default diff is poor. PrimeHunter (talk) 06:48, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: That is brilliant, thank you! It is just what I needed. --Gronk Oz (talk) 15:27, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
