November 1[edit]

Categorisation[edit]

If I transclude a page (x) onto another page (y), ie. by typing {{x}} in y, y would be categorised just like x. So is it possible for me to then remove the categories in y without removing the transclusion in y or removing the categories in x? twotwofourtysix(My talk page and contributions) 05:14, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Twotwofourtysix: {{suppress categories|{{x}}}} ought to work; see {{Suppress categories}}. Other methods are described and compared in Wikipedia:Category suppression. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:51, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried it and it worked. Thanks. twotwofourtysix(My talk page and contributions) 10:36, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ref naming convention[edit]

Resolved

Why do so many users name references with ":0", ":1", ":2", etc. when adding citations to articles? (Example diff) I understand the convenience of not having to type out a longer name (although it's hardly convenient for later editors trying to figure out which citations these codes refer to). But why the colon before the number? Why not just a plain numeral? --Sangdeboeuf (talk) 05:17, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that the naming of these is not intentional by the users themselves. In my experience, whenever a user wants to reuse a citation using VisualEditor, like in the example that you gave, it automatically assigns those refnames. Also, the system apparently doesn't accept refnames with numbers only, see WP:REFNAME, and it would apparently just doesn't show those references at all. twotwofourtysix(My talk page and contributions) 05:49, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sandbox - Article Won't Publish From Sandbox[edit]

Hi Guys,

I have worked on my first Wiki article and it is appearing in Sandbox, fully cited.

I wondered if you could help me publish it?

Hannahbones I have added the appropriate information to allow you to submit the draft for a review; new users cannot directly create articles. Just click the "submit this draft for review" button in the box that is now at the top of your draft.
If you have a connection to this company, please review conflict of interest and paid editing for information on required formal disclosures. 331dot (talk) 11:12, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

331dot thank you very much. I can confirm I have no affiliation to this company, I just really admire the founder. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hannahbones (talkcontribs) 11:19, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hannahbones For a newer user, you did very well with complicated formatting and an infobox. 331dot (talk) 11:28, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

331dot that is really kind of you to say, I spent a full day reading the article and making sure I followed best practices. I am hopeful I can be a productive member of the Wikipedia community. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hannahbones (talkcontribs) 11:33, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

how can you do wildcard searches using Incategory:[edit]

Hello, 1/ How do you do wildcard normal (not special) searches using incategory? 2/ And does searching for articles that have 2 categories in common work? Help:Searching gives an example - but the page it is linked to says that it is a feature request Wakelamp d[@-@]b (talk) 11:50, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Wakelamp: incategory: requires a specific category name. Wildcard searches are not possible with this feature. Two incategory: works fine for intersections. Wikipedia:Category intersection is older than the incategory: feature but does mention it at Wikipedia:Category intersection#Using MediaWiki search to find category intersections. I even added a search box prefilled with two incategory:. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:05, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Adding official website[edit]

good morning, I'm the manager of the official website of Tuscany destination. Last night somebody let me know that on the English version of the Tuscany page of Wikipedia there was a wrong website link (an older version not updated). SO I created an account and edited the page, doing so I also thought it would be useful to add this information to the Spanish e and German versions of the page. But this morning I found all my additions delated.

Why is that? do I need to prove that that is the official website somehow? How are websites chosen? I see intoscana.it that is also one of our website that is only in Italian and dedicated to Tuscan people so, I'm confused.

Thank you for helping me understand your policy

Costanzagio First, please review conflict of interest and paid editing for information on required formal disclosures that you must make. I will also post information about this on your user talk page. Please understand that Wikipedia is not a collection of links; there must be a purpose for the link with regards to the encyclopedia. Instead of editing the article directly, please discuss on the article talk page(Talk:Tuscany) what exactly it is that you wish to do.(I see that you restored the link, but I suspect it will get removed again). 331dot (talk) 12:02, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

{{{native_name_module}}}[edit]

Hi there. Can someone please explain what is the {{{native_name_module}}} in Melsik Baghdasaryan article's infobox, and how to fix/get rid of it? Thanks in advance, ZaniGiovanni (talk) 12:57, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like Template:Infobox martial artist was updated yesterday by WOSlinker to add this module. I don't know the reason for the change, but it looks to now be appearing on all article using that template. Would need an admin or someone with template editing permissions to change/revert it. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:10, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've left a message on talkpage of user who made the change, hopefully they'll know how to fix it. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:13, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the help Joseph2302. Regards, ZaniGiovanni (talk) 13:45, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@ZaniGiovanni: I'm not sure what {{{native_name_module}}} is intended for but I have made it optional.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 14:37, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Stacy Mitchhart - missing CD[edit]

I am not an editor in Wiki but have noticed a CD issued in 2020 for Stacy Mitchhart is missing - he issued "Printer's Alley". Could someone please add that to his entry? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.45.233.242 (talk) 14:38, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! For improvements to the Stacy Mitchhart article, you can post your suggestions at the article's talk page - Talk:Stacy Mitchhart - with a reliable source. Or, be bold and make the addition yourself! Thanks, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 15:43, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Confederation Building in Ottawa[edit]

This building is Chateau Style, not Gothic Revival.

The roof has the chateau slope and tine dormers, the entrance door is a depressed arch, typical of the chateau style - see Chambord, Chenenceau etc. There is not a lancet arch to be found. This is listed as the wrong style

Thank you. I was going to suggest that you find a reliable source for that information; but I saw that the article was completely devoid of reliable sources (it had one source, but that was to a personal blog, and these are not usually regarded as relabile). So I went looking and found a source to back up what you say; whereupon I made the change you suggest, and added this reference. I also removed the unreliable reference. If you are able to find reliable sources for more of the information that is in the article, you could improve its encyclopaedic value immensley by adding them. In future, as GoingBatty says, the Talk page is a better place to make suggestions. --ColinFine (talk) 17:14, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

website source for Pure Software?[edit]

Looking at Pure Software, I'm seeing a website, http://www.puresoftwaresolutions.com, listed in the info box when the page renders, but I'm not seeing it the old style source or the pop-up that appears with the new editors. Where is it coming from? (It's not longer a current website, and archive.org does not have any decent snapshots). NE Ent 15:55, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@NE Ent: {{Infobox company}} (apparently) populates the web address from the Wikidata item, so you (or someone) will need to edit that Wikidata item to fix it. -Arch dude (talk) 16:04, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that did it, thanks. 16:16, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Captcha appearing wrongly[edit]

Today I've made a couple of edit-protected requests ([2] and [3]), and both times I was asked to fill out a captcha because I'd added external links. Neither one had any links at all (except my signature), and Template:edit semi-protected only links to Wikipedia pages. Why did these edits make me fill out the captcha? 72.77.42.118 (talk) 16:46, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

One possibility - 72.77.42.118, did you click on "Edit source" (as opposed to "New section") when you went to add your requests? Using the former might've caused the issue, since there are external links in other entries on those pages. Wikignome Wintergreentalk 17:20, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's probably because there's already a dodgy link on the page, that gets scanned when you publish your change. At a guess it's the Daily Mail link for ther first one, but I may be wrong, and I haven't looked at the other. I don't think there's much you can do about it until the talk page gets long enough that somebody decides it's worth setting up archiving. --ColinFine (talk) 17:22, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In both cases, I clicked "view source" on the article and then selected the "Submit an edit request" button. It's essentially like clicking "New Source" except it has a bunch of information already, so I don't have to type everything. 72.77.42.118 (talk) 19:42, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DYK emblems not showing at the top of my user page[edit]

I simply cannot count! Hiding my stupid question. Coretheapple (talk) 16:57, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

I'm embarrassed to have to ask this, as I've been on Wikipedia for a few years and you'd think I know my way around, but this stumps me. Also this is a vanity question. Anyway....

I've had 22 DYKs. Now if you go to my user mage, you will see at the top a bunch of DYK check marks, with GA emblems to the right. I generated those check markets by using the coding that you see on my user page, beginning with {{DYK user topicon|article_name = Joan McCracken| icon=Symbol question.svg|icon_nr=4}} and ending with my most recent DYK, which is for the Life With Father TV series. Yet only 19 DYK emblems show up at the top. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong and how I can add the other three? Thanks in advance. Coretheapple (talk) 17:45, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Coretheapple: When I look at your user page, I only see 19 instances of {{DYK user topicon}}, which matches the 19 emblems showing at the top. (Note that the first one is numbered "4", with numbers 0-3 being used for the GA emblems.) If you want more emblems at the top, add 3 more instances of {{DYK user topicon}}. Hope this helps! GoingBatty (talk) 18:04, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: oh man..... what a dumb question. I cannot count. Thanks. Coretheapple (talk) 19:30, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have my Great GrandFathers Interview from a 1920 Newspaper Article about his participation in the Battle of Antietam. How would I add that ?[edit]

I have my Great GrandFathers Interview from a 1920 Newspaper Article about his participation in the Battle of Antietam. How would I add that ?

Possibly as a reference at Battle of Antietam? WP:REFBEGIN has details on how and when to add references. Beeblebrox (talk) 22:05, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There are really two separate questions:
  1. How do you cite that? People sometimes think that in that sort of case you should upload a scan of the clipping you have: you should not. You are not referencing the clipping that you happen to have, but the item in a published newspaper. The citation should contain things such as the newspaper title and publisher, date and page of the item, title and author (if given) of the item. It is not required to link anything.
  2. What information are you using that interview to support? If it is about the events or conditions at the battle this might be acceptable as a primary source, but a secondary one would be better. If it is simply the fact that he was in the battle, then why is this significant, for the purposes of Wikipedia? If he meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then it may be; if not, it is unlikely to be. --ColinFine (talk) 00:01, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a category for articles with references lacking URLs?[edit]

I'm basically asking if there's a category or some other listing that's the opposite of Category:Articles with bare URLs for citations. Like how most of the reference list of this article was before I showed up. I've been having fun helping add in URLs with my Newspapers.com account from the WP:TWL, but I'm not sure how to actually look for articles with references lacking URL links. SilverserenC 23:28, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Only 'sort of'... URLs are not required in references except in {{cite web}} references which (of course, because we are citing a web page) require a url. See Category:CS1 errors: requires URL.
