Need help

I have been improving an article in Wikipedia with valid references but another editor is keep undoing my whole contributions in a single edit. I contacted the editor and asked to tell the reason but instead of getting any response my edits were removed again. Bringtar (talk) 05:33, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Bringtar The other editor states that your edits violate one of the most important policies on Wikipedia, the Biographies of Living Persons policy. All edits about living people must be very well sourced to top independent reliable sources. 331dot Thank you for the help but the editor didn't exactly answered to my question on their talk page rather warned me of blocking and terming my edits as disruptive. It seems to me that Bringtar's edits to List of converts to Christianity from Hinduism, regarding Abel and Kambli, were adequately sourced. I'd like to know why Aman.kumar.goel reverted them. Akg's edit summary says "no self-admission per BLP politicies": is it really true that someone publicly stating "I converted to Christianity" is not acceptable as evidence that they converted to Christianity? Maproom Thank you for the help and yes that is exactly my point. I even asked the editor to specify the sources he thinks violates the guidelines because to me those sources are fine because these same sources are used in other Wikipedia articles. Bringtar (talk) 08:25, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Maproom, actually WP:EGRS says that a reliable source reporting the subject's self-identification is pretty much the only acceptable type of source for such claims. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 13:33, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

@Maproom: It would help greatly if you link to what sources you are referring to. Or at least a diff. But you at least mentioned names here. I see at [1] Raja Abel and Vinod Kambli.

But the source for Raja Abel is this [2]. It doesn't mention anything about a conversion. In fact the only mention of religion I saw was 'I was born in Vizag to a Christian mother'. Note that the list went so far as to claim they are a Christian missionary but again, I see no such thing in that ref. Maybe there are refs elsewhere like in the person's article. If so, there need to be brought to the list article. You cannot such things to other Wikipedia articles.

Source for Vinod Kambli is [3]. It says 'Kambli is now a Christian. “We followed all religions from childhood, when I was wearing that Saibaba amulet in my playing days, I used to also do the cross-sign. I converted on my own will because I found peace and it has really changed me.' Although it's a bit mushy, I'd accept this as sufficient to day they converted to Christianity. But from what? AFAICT, there is no direct mention of Hinduism. The "Saibaba amulet" is not sufficient especially since it was preceded by "all religions" which logically would suggest they are a convert from Islam, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Wiccan, and even Christianity.

I'd further note that while User:Aman.kumar.goel may have removed those 2, it wasn't User:Bringtar who added them AFAICT. Also I noticed that Raja Abel does mention 'Brahmin father' but I don't think this is sufficient to say his father was Hindu and it also tells us nothing about Raja Abel (and also we still have nothing about his current religion or conversion so this example just perplexes me and makes me wonder if you're looking at our article on the subject which as I said is irrelevant by itself). Is there a way of checking if text will be flagged as copyrighted before I add it into Wikipedia

Hi all

I'm working with some experts to improve content related to green technologies and a few other things. They're writing the text and then I'm copyediting, revising etc and then adding it to Wikipedia. What I'm slightly concerned about is them missunderstanding the copyright requiremnts, giving me copyrighted text from somewhere else and then I think its new text and put it on Wikipedia and get in trouble. My question is is there a free service inside or outside Wikipedia that I can put it through to double check its not from somewhere else first?

Hi Tenryuu sorry not to be clear, I'm looking for a tool that searches text which is not yet in Wikipedia (if that is possible?), so basically this but with a free text box instead of a link to an article. John Cummings (talk) 12:56, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

@John Cummings: The best way to write an article is to collect all the independent third-party sources about the subject, and rewrite the information but source every single statement. It could be frustrating if they write something based on their personal knowledge, because then you might not ever be able to source it and the article might get flagged for being like a personal essay. You’ll want to inform them to make sure they don’t just cut and paste, and if they source it properly, you can search the text associated with each citation to see if indeed they did rewrite it correctly or not, as suggested above. @John Cummings: I've just done an experiment where I took an old version of my sandbox and placed the OID into Earwig's Copyvio Detector (i.e. it doesn't need a Wikipedia live mainspace page name). The program ran perfectly well, so one approach you could take is to do the same via a sandboxed version of the content you planned to add. The only obvious downside is that if the result did suggest copyvio, you would be wise to ask for the sandbox page to be deleted: which suggests you should use a dedicated sub-page for all this. Hi! How does this category work?

Hi!. I would like to know how the "Category:Failed assassinations" work. I was about to add some days ago Malian de facto President Assimi Goïta after he survived a knife attack at a mosque in the capital of Mali. Now, today, the police in Madagascar foiled a plan to kill president Andry Rajoelina. My question is, should individuals such as Goïta and Rajoelina be added to that category or only articles about the attack/plans themselves should? Thanks! CoryGlee (talk) 11:46, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Why has my article been rejected?

Hi,

I recently posted an article to Wiki and I received an email that it has been rejected for publishing. Why is this so?

As far as I can see, an experienced reviewer has concluded that there are no reliable sources that discuss this company in sufficient depth. The policy is explained at WP:ORGDEPTH. As you will appreciate, Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not a business directory and most of the world's companies are not represented here, just as most people are not. Wikipedia's policy on living people is fairly strict (see WP:BLPNAME in particular) and we do not arbitrarily add relative's names unless they are themselves WP:NOTABLE or very relevant to understanding the person in whose article they are included: Anthony Gose in this case. Whatever addition was added needs reliable published sources which if you have you can discuss on the article's talk page. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:55, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

I'm trying to note the definition of a key term to the article Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind. I would like to display to the right of the text, up against the infobox. The reflist simply passively accumulates the references contained throughout the article. You cannot edit a reflist, but would rather need to make the necessary edit(s) to the appropriate reference(s). --Orange Mike | Talk 16:27, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Notability Help

Hello! I have noticed that a user added a notability tag within the following article I heavily worked on: John Finnegan (The Bold and the Beautiful). I could not disagree with the assessment and I would like to remove the tag. I am highly confused because there are so many soap opera fictional character pages out there, who does not have half the research, sources, and references I have and there is no "notability" tag. I am highly confused about why this was added and pondering how I could remedy this issue? Can I gain some guidelines in order that I can remove the tag? As you may see, excessive research has been done using a profuse amount of secondary sources. The character's full name is John Finnegan, but he is referred to as "Finn" on the series, so the google search may vary on his name if that is the confusion (however, he is credited in closing credits as Dr. John Finnegan). The character has been on the series for a year and is already very notable within the canvas and outside of the universe of soaps opera due to the actor's popularity. The character is recognized especially due to his romantic relationship with one of soap operas ' female leads and fathering her child. Essentially, in soap opera lingo, we would say that this character is linked to a "legacy" character and has fathered a "legacy" child. This alone warrants him an article, alongside the fact that the series has cast his family members, which will make his character be part of a core family of the soap. This soap opera character is a major player and is portrayed by a contracted actor. Once again, I am just highly confused about how this article does not meet the notability criteria when there has been significant coverage of the character (the coverage is IN-DEPTH. The character's introduction as well was done when Bold and Beautiful, was the first United States scripted production to return taping during the COVID-19 restrictions, and his character (even his first airdate) was discussed in those secondary sources announcing the series' return), references are reliable, sources are all secondary, it is very independent of the subject and once again deeply presumed for reasons cited above. @AwardShowFan123: It appears to me that the character is notable: discuss on the talk page. However, the article also qualifies based on an fairly obscure criterion: if this material were merged into The Bold and the Beautiful, then that article would be WP:TOOLONG and would need to be broken up. This justification is potentially subject to abuse, but in this case it would push the notability decision in the direction of "keep" if notability were marginal. -Arch dude (talk) 17:08, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

@Arch dude: I am glad to have some validation/vindication that the character does have notability. I fear that since this is a recently new article, I won't be getting any interest or responses on the talk page fast enough and the article could be deleted. @AwardShowFan123: Do not shorten the article. The alternative to deletion would have been to merge the article into The Bold and the Beautiful, but that would have made that article too long, which would require The Bold and the Beautiful to be split. I had a discussion with the other editor on their personal talk page, and sadly our exchange came to an impasse, and thus we could not agree, in spite of me providing a series of proofs and evidence, including the validity of my sources to prove this page's notability. You could alert other editors via relevant projects as well as editors who have already been involved. Trying to find lost ancestors

HI. I have been on Wikipedia several times and because of my lack of knowledge with the site, I have not been successful in finding out anything. Joseph Isreal Champion (Isreal Champion) of Crawford county, GA was tried and convicted of Murder in Louisville, GA in 1842. The Macon, GA Telegraph published the trial proceedings in March 1842. There was a witness for the defendant, Thomas Champion, present in the courtroom. My problem is in my ancestor's research, I can not find any relatives above Joseph Isreal. I need to know how Thomas Champion is related to Isreal so that I may continue my family search.

Broken citation parameter: |series-number=

I'm puzzled with this edit which uses {{Citation}}, where an error message reads "Unknown parameter |series-number= ignored". However, this parameter is documented as supported. Any ideas how to format "IERS Technical Note No. 32"? +mt 21:41, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Where do you see |series-number= documented as supported by {{citation}}? That parameter is only supported by {{cite episode}} which is why {{citation}} is showing the error message.

Consider using something like this:

@Trappist the monk: The template docs say that seriesno= should be replaced by series-number=, I read that also as meaning series-number is a supported parameter. Does it mean something else? It seems odd to me that it would say "use series-number now" if it didn't support it. RudolfRed (talk) 22:25, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

That table of no-longer-supported parameters at Template:Citation § Deprecated is shared among all of the 27 or so cs1|2 templates. The documentation sucks, no doubt about that, but it shouldn't, and in this case doesn't, suggest that |series-number= is supported by {{citation}} because |series-number= is not mentioned anywhere else on that page.

Why has google changed my internet.

My name is JAMES MORGAN and I live on Cape Breton Island and for the last week my internet has been changed! Every morning I use google and now it’s been changed to all this advanced stuff and the box is moved. I want google to contact me personally and change it back to the way it was I don’t like it like this. My name is James Morgan and (redacted) I don’t want my internet like this it’s stupid. It’s not bells fault it’s yours! Please help.
