Search with both insource operator and OR failing[edit]

I've had a long-standing search for insource:"hdl.handle.net/10182/" that's relevant to my day job interests, to capture articles citing resources from a particular repository. Now lots of people are instead using a citing syntax with "hdl = 10182/1234" so I want to search for { insource:"hdl.handle.net/10182/" OR insource:"hdl=10182/" } - but I'm getting Unexpected results.

  • A search for {kakapo OR bedelia} gets results as expected (higher than either {kakapo} or {bedelia} individually), so that's fine.
  • {insource:"hdl.handle.net/10182/"} gets 21 results
  • {insource:"hdl=10182/"} gets 60 results
  • {insource:"hdl.handle.net/10182/" AND insource:"hdl=10182/"} gets 2 results (and both articles have both in them) but
  • {insource:"hdl.handle.net/10182/" OR insource:"hdl=10182/"} gets only 1 result

In case I was messing up the search syntax of the combination I tried putting {insource:"hdl.handle.net/10182/"} and {insource:"hdl=10182/"} into the advanced search "one of these words" options but got the same results.

One solution is for me to go through and finish converting every reference to the hdl.handle.net URL to the newer citing syntax. :-) But I thought someone might want to look at the search behaviour as well. --Zeborah (talk) 00:50, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Zeborah. WP:VPT is a better place to discuss issues about how the software works - or perhaps go straight to WP:phabricator and report it as a bug. --ColinFine (talk) 10:13, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Zeborah: mw:Help:CirrusSearch/Logical operators#Booleans, keywords, and prefixes says: "AND and OR do not interact predictably with special keywords (like insource: or hastemplate:) or with namespaces (like Talk: or User:) and probably should not be used in conjunction with either." insource:hdl insource:10182 insource:/hdl.*10182/ works and only gives a few false positives. Don't use regex insource:/regexp/ alone per mw:Help:CirrusSearch#Regular expression searches. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:53, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I want to receive a notification when someone links to an article[edit]

Hi, I noticed that when someone links to an article I have created I receive a notification. For example, I created Nashwan al-Himyari, whenever someone other than me puts "[[" and "]]" around "Nashwan al-Himyari" in another article I receive a notification. I want to receive this notification if someone linked to an article that I didn't create, is that possible. Thanks.--SharʿabSalam▼ (talk) 03:06, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@SharabSalam: I don't know of a way to do that exactly, but you could run this search periodically, leaving it open in a browser and noting the latest edit shown before refreshing it so you can see which edits have happened since. It will show edits to those existing pages that link to it, but since there are only 5, it shouldn't happen much. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 05:39, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
AlanM1, thanks!. That was helpful.--SharʿabSalam▼ (talk) 05:51, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Primary vs. Secondary sourcing for election results[edit]

I'm working on a mass overhaul of the page Lists of Washington initiatives right now, updating the lists to tables with the results of each initiative along with whether they passed or failed. There's a notice at the top of the page saying it relies too much on primary sources. The issue here is that most election results, especially the earlier years, are only available directly from the Washington Secretary of State's office. I'm wondering if there are any common exceptions to WP:PSTS that could justify the removal of that notice once the article is cleaned up. ThadeusOfNazerethTalk to Me! 03:12, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ThadeusOfNazereth It's okay to source election results in such a manner, because the secretary of state is not interpreting past election results. Primary sources are acceptable for indisputable factual information that is not being analyzed. 331dot (talk) 09:47, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
ThadeusOfNazereth I'd say it's reasonable to remove that template since there is also a "more citations needed", which presumably refers to the content that is not just re-cap of results from the SoS. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 17:51, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Page deletion[edit]

Hello,

In order to contribute to the Portuguese literature database, I have created a page for the author Vitor Vicente. Please see the original entry - https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitor_Vicente

This has been deleted after a couple of hours. Can you please help me understand the reason? Is it related to me being the author of the page as well as the writer?

I have read the Wikipedia policy, seen plenty of pages related to living worldwide writers and could not understand what was the issue.

Thank you in advance, Vitor — Preceding unsigned comment added by VitorVicente83 (talkcontribs) 07:34, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is the help desk for English-language Wikipedia, so it will be difficult for people here to help you.
  • Each Wikipedia has its own standards for what makes an article acceptable. People here won't generally know the standards for pt:WP. (In en:WP, writing an article about yourself is strongly discouraged, and usually unsuccessful, but not strictly forbidden.)
  • The article has been deleted, so non-admin people can't see it.
  • Most of us here can't read Portuguese.

It appears to have been "speedily deleted" under criteria A4 that are equivalent to A7 on the English Wikipedia. Mikenorton (talk) 09:39, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to move a page properly, when the old page is a redirect... or, what I did wrong.[edit]

There used to be a page The Coffee House, containing article about a Sirius XM channel.

I created an article The Coffee House (coffeehouse chain) for a Vietnamese coffeehouse chain (back in 2018). So far so good.

Now, 2 years later, I wanted to move the original article to "(Sirius XM)" and the "(coffeehouse chain)" to not have the "(coffeehouse chain)"... so I did the first, but I cannot do the second, since "The Coffee House" is now a redirect, because of my first move!

What should I do now? And what have I done wrong, if anything? All the pages are a bit confusing... I should now copy-paste the article and then ask for a history merge? Or is this "usurping the article page"? I am confused.... --- Running 09:11, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No, you must not do a copy and paste move. It'll need an admin to do the move over the redirect, so look at WP:Requested moves. If the move is accepted, don't forget to include a hatnote for the benefit of people looking for the previous page. --David Biddulph (talk) 09:25, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! In the end however, I have decided to instead redirect all to Coffeehouse (disambiguation). --- Running 09:30, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

CC-licensed video on Youtube → Commons?[edit]

This BBC documentary is tagged with Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed) and has encyclopedic value (I actually want to use it on an article) but I have two problems. I don't know how to download it from Youtube, and since I'm not a user of Commons, I'm not familiar with how it works. Can someone please upload that free video on Commons? For the Novice Wikipedia Editor Who Refers to Himself as Hippeus[edit]

I believe that you are in error by deleting the editorial addition: "Donald Luskin is a frequent guest on Fox News, where he has been created as an economist. Luskin does not hold a college degree".

The sentence added is a statement of fact. Donald Luskin is a frequent guest speaker on Fox News, where he has been described as "Economist" next to his name on the banner below his "talking head" video feed. Regarding Luskin's lack a college degree, that fact is based on Luskin's own blog, "The Conspiracy to Keep You Poor and Stupid." (February 16, 2003), and is further referenced in the Wikipedia section that begins with the sentence: On his former blog, Luskin stated he "attended Yale in 1973–1974; dropped out to rejoin the real world as soon as possible."[4]

I am not sure why you repeatedly delete the factually based sentences, which has been appropriately cited to the source of the facts contained in those two sentences which were added.

@Materialscientist and Hippeus: AFAIK the IP want's to say you that the source which says that is source #4 in that article, which is http://www.poorandstupid.com/about.asp, archived in the Web archive. Would you try and look at the source next time somebody incorrectly tries to use a known source by typing its number in squae brackets like here? @IP please see WP:REFB for the correct procedure. Originally the IP didn't use a source at all: [1]. In one of his later edits: [2] he did add a references to the deadlink http://www.poorandstupid.com/about.asp which is archived to https://web.archive.org/web/20070518172715/http://www.poorandstupid.com/about.asp . The web archive does have "Attended Yale in 1973-1974; dropped out to rejoin the real world as soon as possible", though it does not say (does not have a college degree, this is a bit of OR). The archived webpage from 2007 mentions Fox News in "Television: CNBC: regular guest on "Kudlow & Company" Bloomberg TV, CNN, Fox News", though it does not say "frequent appearances". From the point they added this reference, it does have a reference (all be it an archived copy of a dead site that supposedly the blog of the BLP).--Hippeus (talk) 13:45, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm brand new here & need help![edit]

This is my first time attempting to publish on Wikipedia and it has not gone well. I'm looking for simple instruction on adding basic information about my company. I'd appreciate any assistance I can get on getting started. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by JamieM41402 (talkcontribs) 16:36, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The instruction is simple. Don't. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a website for promotion of your company. See also WP:Conflict of interest and WP:Paid editing. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:40, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@JamieM41402: If the company is notable by our definition (WP:NCORP), then we want an article about it. If the company is not notable, then we do not want such an article and we will delete it. If you are certain that the company meets our notability requirements, you may submit a draft article (see WP:YFA), but if the article is accepted you will have no control over what other editors put into that article. -Arch dude (talk) 17:48, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@JamieM41402: If there is already a Wikipedia article about your company, and you would like to suggest updates to the page, you can post your suggestions on the article talk page for other editors to consider. For example, if you work for Microsoft, then the corresponding talk page is Talk:Microsoft. GoingBatty (talk) 00:23, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please wait before creating a page about a company or organization.
Since you have a close connection to the company or organization, you have a conflict of interest. Please read the FAQ first. If you still think your article is appropriate, you can submit it to Articles for creation. Just click this link and follow the instructions.  Seagull123  Φ  17:45, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Inappropriate behavior in the Ritual (film) article[edit]

I tried to insert the name of the second screenwriter (Joe is the first) , but another person (Juliete) blatantly deleted it. There is a link after her name , totally fine and clickable. Please tell Juliete that this is not OK to delete names of people , who worked hard on this film. Hello, there has already been some back and forth at this article. If a change you make is reverted then you should enter into discussion with the other editor involved to reach agreement. (See WP:BRD). This should probably take place at the article talk page so other editors can see what is agreed. What you should not do is continue to remove each other's edits, This is edit warring and can cause you difficulty with the wider community, the merits of the respective edits notwithstanding. Question about pending changes[edit]

I came across this edit where an editor changed the picture of Zachary Taylor in the infobox. I think the edit was made in good faith, but I'm not sure if it's a better picture than the one previously in the infobox. Should I accept this or revert it? Try to make English page and Turkish page same[edit]

Every Single Word - Youtube Infobox being very weird[edit]

So, the article is Every Single Word. Someone just put up an infobox on there for the Youtube channel, but I noticed the actual Youtube link was to the wrong channel (also, the creator's name is Dylan Marron, but the userbox is showing Marron Dylan Marron). So I updated the channel link...and it didn't change in the article. It's the correct link in the edit screen, but the article itself is still showing the old link. And this isn't a cache issue as far as I can tell, I linked the article to a friend to see if they were seeing the same thing and they are. Unless Wikipedia itself is not updating its own internal cache for the page edit???

I've never seen this before. It's bizarre. SilverserenC 20:18, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed by [3]. When in doubt, read the documentation. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:35, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mistake Posted PDF[edit]

Hello,

I accidentally uploaded my PDF when I was first learning how to upload content onto Wikipedia.

Here is the link to it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Loy_Khan_Ghazi_Mir_Zaman_Khan_Kunari.pdf

I thought I deleted it from my end, but the deleted entry comes up when I Google Loy Khan Ghazi Mir Zaman Khan Kunari.

How can it be deleted completely?

Thank you for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lhtaylor2020 (talkcontribs) 22:26, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It was deleted on April 1. If it is still showing in Google, then perhaps Google cached or archived a copy. RudolfRed (talk) 23:05, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Lhtaylor2020: File:Loy Khan Ghazi Mir Zaman Khan Kunari.pdf was deleted on your request 1 April, 55 minutes after you uploaded it. Google visited the page during that time and cached it. They haven't visited it again since so they haven't detected it's deleted. It has returned a HTTP 404 Page Not Found message since the deletion and will be removed from their search results next time they try to visit it. We don't control when that happens. Delete Wikipedia app[edit]

If your phone manurfacturer made the Wikipedia app a stock app on your phone, it cannot be removed without rooting (which is quite technical). If you downloaded it from the Play Store yourself, you should be able to normally uninstall the app. Ed6767 (talk) 23:37, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
