page preview option missing[edit]

I don't know why it's blocking me from uploading a screenshot, but anyway, there's a blank space where there should be the option next to Mobile view. It doesn't show when I turn off all extensions, and doesn't show in either Chrome or Edge. I have restarted, and I have logged in and checked disable (it was enabled) then rechecked enabled, also to no luck. It said "gadgets and scripts, including global ones" could interfere with the page previews but I don't know what those are and a google search brings up no relevant results. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Messgchr (talkcontribs) 03:48, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Satellite images[edit]

Hey all, is there a website that makes satellite images creative commons? I have several Wikipedia pages of minor geography that have no photos that I would like to "screen cap" a satellite image of, upload, and then use on Wikipedia. Does this make sense? @Geographyinitiative: Satellite images are copyrighted to the "photographer", which is a company in almost all cases. No third party could unilaterally provide a license, since that party does not own the copyright. The only way a third party could do this is if they have made a formal contractual arrangement with the the copyright owner. -Arch dude (talk) 02:40, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Geographyinitiative: I'm not an expert on the entire satellite industry. The big mapping companies with the big datasets copyright their images. I don't know about all government images or any images from all the new little cubesats. @Geographyinitiative: Maybe. See https://gisgeography.com/free-satellite-imagery-data-list/ , though it seems to have some confusion over the meaning of "imagery", but at least the USGS source has potential. The High Resolution Orthoimagery is ~30 cm, which is pretty good. The license status of downloaded images may depend on exactly which source you choose, and you apparently have to register and download an image to find out the license terms.
Another source listed, DigitalGlobe, apparently provides some imagery under CC 4.0, but digging into it on their site, it's actually CC-BY-NC-4.0 (non-commercial), which is not suitable. I.e., don't trust that blog to be accurate – verify the licensing from the actual source.

Updating retrieval dates[edit]

Is it good practice to update the "Retrived on" field in website citations? For example, if I am editing an article, click on the citation, and see that it still supports the article's text, should I update the "Retrived on" date with the current date, or leave it as is? I am curious if there is consensus on this issue, since I could not find any. — Goszei (talk) 01:38, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Goszei: I do. The most recent time the reference was actually checked is is the best information. An editor who is interested in the date the reference was first checked can look at the article's edit history, and an editor who is concerned about changes in the reference can use the Wayback machine. -Arch dude (talk) 06:04, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to create the brand page at wiki?[edit]

@EnKite: Don't, for several reasons. You have a conflict of interest: see WP:COI. Your web site (almost certainly) does not meet our notability requirements:see WP:N and Wikipedia:Common sourcing mistakes (notability). User page does not exist[edit]

I logged on to Wikipedia to make a donation. When I wanted to check my personal data, I was informed that this user page does not exist. How is it possible that I log on AND that I don't exist? Your account exists and works. It's optional for users to create a user page. If you want a user page for your account then you can save something at User:Bluefootblue. The content is public. See Wikipedia:User pages. The closest you have to "personal data" is Special:Preferences which includes your private email address. It's optional to specify an email address. Creating another article[edit]

Hello I successfully created my first article about Philippa Flowerday, and now want to create another article. In my sandbox there is a note about Philippa being a "redirect". I have gone ahead and blanked your sandbox because you will most probably have a need for it in the future. And by the way you can blank any page by clicking edit, selecting everything (Ctrl+A) and pressing delete (only permissible for articles within own user namespace). Use of "break" template in writer infoboxes, and corrected title[edit]

Could anyone please tell me if it was okay for me to remove the "break" template in writer infoboxes between genres? Maybe I haven't seen enough writer templates, but I don't think they usually have those templates there. Also, I just fixed two links that had the title of a book wrong wrongly, since the title used the numeral rather than the word, as did the links which the links did. Could anyone also tell me if this was the wrong thing to do? The redirects worked on both links, but I find those to be distracting. If you're referring to this edit, then you didn't remove any template; instead, you removed the standard XHTML tag for a line break, "<br />". I see nothing wrong with removing it, and I approve of your removal of what seem to me utterly superfluous capital letters. (On the other hand, I greatly dislike bio-infoboxes, other than for easily tabulatable kinds of people -- baseball players and the like.) -- Hoary (talk) 12:23, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Amandaebrophy: Images on Wikipedia must be released under a permissive copyright (see CC-BY-SA). Therefore we cannot use the one at gettyimage. Have your photographer (who is the copyright owner) upload an image and release it. To upload, go to Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard and upload to commons. After the image is available at commons, any editor that does not have a conflict of interest WP:COI can update the article to replace the image. Since you ave a COI, you canno to this yourself, but you can put a {{edit request}} on the article's talk page. Please also make a WP:PAID disclosure on your user page, as required by the terms of service of this web site. (edit conflict)Hello, Amandaebrophy. You responded in the right place, except that it's confusing if you put your reply in the middle of the section. Please reply at the end of the sectionk, as I am doing here.
You said in this edit "I am Ava Max's publicist. My name is Amanda Brophy and I work at Donovan Public Relations.". If that is so, then you are editing Wikipedia's article about a person whom you are paid to represent: that is paid editing as far as Wikipedia is concerned, and a formal declaration of the fact is mandatory.
As Arch dude explained above, that photo may not be used anywhere in Wikipedia unless the copyright holder explicitly licenses it under a licence such as CC-BY-SA, (which will allow anybody to reuse or alter it for any purpose, commercial or not, as long as they give proper attribution). If you are in contact with the holder of the copyright in that picture, you could ask them to license it accordingly: they would need to go through the procedure at donating copyright materials. Otherwise, if you want to offer a different picture, you could arrange for somebody to take a picture of Max, and upload it themselves, licensing it as they go. Note, though, that neither you nor Max has the power to decide which picture is used on Wikipedia's article about her. You are welcome to upload a different picture, if it is appropriately licensed; and suggest it be used; but uninvolved editors will make the decision. --ColinFine (talk) 23:26, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The picture in the Article is of a 26 year old woman taken when she was 25. I am afraid I cannot understand how it can be described as outdated. I am not sure why this question should be seriously entertained. Perhaps someone could explain this to me. Hi, Spinney Hill. You'd have to ask Amanda E Brophy; but she can't answer because her account has been blocked for undisclosed paid editing. But I presume the answer is that somebody on Max's team has decided that is a better picture to promote her product. That may or may not be the case, but Wikipedia is not interested in promoting anyone's product. In fact, the reason that the picture couldn't be used is that it is not licensed in a way that Wikipedia accepts; otherwise editors might have been willing to replace the existing picture (perhaps cropped to eliminate as much of the advertising behind her as possible). --ColinFine (talk) 12:33, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It was the user page, "User:CyberJagrithi". Orangemike deleted this, citing "G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion".
The promotionalism of the draft aside, I doubt that the draft would have passed any review. It was extraordinarily verbose.
Orangemike also made a username block.

File uploading help[edit]

Hey there. I'm not a new user, but I don't really work much with images on here. I recently uploaded an image (here), and it seems I somehow (sort of) uploaded it incorrectly... see the comment on my file upload where it contains all the text for the 'summary' section. Everything is all fine now in comparison to this image, except for the comment, which in that, states that it was uploaded using the File Upload Wizard. Since I didn't get that as a comment, obviously I sort of goofed up a bit- how can I avoid this for next time? @Tenryuu: Looking now, I believe I used the 'Plain form for local uploads' option and pasted the file summary for the image in that box, I see the big 'Click here to start the Upload Wizard' link now... :P Now going through the actual upload wizard itself, what do I enter into this section, as it would be the same info as the Cousins for Life image? @Magitroopa: If I'm understanding correctly that your concern is the wikicode appearing in the Comment field, I've seen it on many images, including c:File:Australia_United_States_Locator.svg that I uploaded, but not c:File:3.4V Zener diode V-A characteristic.svg.
