Can't see photos[edit]

I've been using Wikipedia for about 2 years and have had no problems opening pictures till 2 days ago. When I click on a photo, instead of going to the photo I get a black screen. About Wikimedia Commons[edit]

I want to upload a new file for African countries by Human Development Index to reflect new 2017 data. Should I request a file move from File:African countries by Human Development Index (2015).png to File:African countries by Human Development Index.png so I can upload a new version of the file, or should I upload the file under a separate file name (File:African countries by Human Development Index (2017).png)? If I do that would File:African countries by Human Development Index (2015).png be deleted as it is no longer used? JACKINTHEBOXTALK 05:28, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The older version is in use on sr.wikipedia, so moving it will require coordination. Perhaps you can just upload the new version to the new undated name and then add comments to each to reference the other? As a separate issue, it might be helpful to others to briefly describe the technique you used to create the map from the data, also in a comment. -Arch dude (talk) 06:31, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Just upload under a new name. The old file will not be deleted. Ruslik_Zero 08:18, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Cut and Paste doesn't always work[edit]

In editing articles, I often want to move text from one place to another in the article. Frequently, however, I am unable to cut and paste to move material. The text I want to move stays in the same place and can't be moved to where I want it to be. This doesn't happen always, but most of the time. Is this a problem with the editing software? Am I doing something wrong? Smallchief (talk) 09:35, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The only occasions on which I have this problem are when I have not properly highlighted the text. Which editor are you using? Dbfirs 12:24, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Editor? I use Microsoft Word if that's what you mean. Just trying to edit right now, cut and paste is working okay -- but it hasn't worked consistently for several weeks. What happens is that I cut a section of text and attempt to paste it somewhere else, and it reappears where I just cut it -- but not where I want it to be. If you haven't run into this problem before, perhaps it's not a wikipedia problem, but a glitch in my computer. What do you think? Thanks for your assistance. Smallchief (talk) 13:23, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I meant Wiki Markup Editor or VisualEditor, but I don't think that will be significant. Dbfirs 18:19, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Smallchief:Cut-and-paste in an edit window in a browser is purely a function of the browser software and your computer's OS. It will work in a Wikipedia edit frame precisely as it works in edit frames on other web pages. You might want to take this question over to the folks at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Computing. Please provide them with browser type and version, computer type, and OS type and version. -Arch dude (talk) 18:05, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I thought it might be a common problem on wikipedia. I guess it's my problem. Smallchief (talk) 18:09, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It sounds as if you are not successfully moving the cursor to the insertion point. Does the problem only happen in Wikipedia edits? Dbfirs 18:16, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, guys. Knowing that it apparently isn't a wikipedia problem, I'll work on it on my computer.Smallchief (talk) 18:37, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I know we're not supposed to edit archive pages but this is likely a Wikipedia problem.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 22:00, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help request[edit]

Hello, can some help me have my username's colour changed to red and my signature to yellow. Or Atleast advise how I can do it myself. I thank you 6Packs (talk) 14:08, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Where do you want the username changed to red? At the top of the page User:6Packs? If you want it when the user page is linked in page histories and elsewhere then red means the user page does not exist so you would have to request deletion of the page. It's optional for registered users to have a user page. See Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing how everyone sees your signature for your signature if you want everyone to see the changed signature. Yellow text on white background is too hard to read: 6Packs (talk). Here is an example signature with orange text: 6Packs (talk). PrimeHunter (talk) 21:52, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

StarKid Productions[edit]

StarKid Productions is nothing more than a shameless promotion for some community theatre and all their plays and non-notable actors. Someone who knows what to do with an article like this should do it. I have no idea because it would involve gutting a lot of it. The latest spam was inserted with this edit, where a link to Starkid's Kickstarter fundraising plea for an upcoming play was sneaked into the article. I left it there because a much more experienced and credible editor should deal with this mess. 2605:A000:FFC0:D8:3059:8016:5847:3E43 (talk) 10:32, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think you assessment it is a bit too harsh. This is a professional theater group with a very large Internet footprint. Rmhermen (talk) 20:32, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't say the subject isn't notable. I said it was being used for shameless promotion and loaded with information that had no business being in an encylopedia. Orangemike apparently agrees with me because he already removed over 18,000 bytes of junk content; 17,000 of it with the edit summary: "removing fancruft more suited for subject's own website." He also added a template at the top about the bad sources, with an edit summary: "there is almost nothing in here from reliable sources; it's mostly YouTube links and worse." The two other top templates from other editors are about how the article is written like an advertisement and relies on too many primary sources. 2605:A000:FFC0:D8:3059:8016:5847:3E43 (talk) 05:14, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Women's basketball[edit]

The U.S. women's basketball team is, perhaps, the most dominant international team in the history of the women's sports, yet it doesn't even have a history section on its Wikipedia page. I'd love to write it on my own, but, unfortunately, I'm not a native speaker, that is why I'm asking for help. I can do the stats, different medal tables, but I need someone to write a history section like this. There is a lot of information on the official page of USA Basketball (usab.com; history of the women's team - https://www.usab.com/womens/national-team/history.aspx). The U.S women's team's Wikipedia page itself is here. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tektofd (talkcontribs) 18:28, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is an editing dispute that you should be discussing on the United States women's national basketball team talk page. You (and an IP editor that is also you?) created a history section and added content over a nine hour period today. It looks like an administrator permanently removed all of the content you added during the first seven hours due to copyright violations, and you were warned about it on your talk page. Then you continuted editing after that for about two more hours. 2605:A000:FFC0:D8:3059:8016:5847:3E43 (talk) 19:08, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Upon further review, it appears that most of the history content you added so far (that wasn't previously purged) was essentially copy and pasted from Katherine Washington. You really need to discuss this matter on the article's talk page and come to an agreement on what to do. 2605:A000:FFC0:D8:3059:8016:5847:3E43 (talk) 19:23, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, I need some help with that. Initially, I just copied and pasted all info from usab.com, then administrators told me that it is prohibited. I decided to find something in Wikipedia, and these two paragraphs are pretty much everything that I found. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tektofd (talkcontribs) 20:24, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I edited with my IP first, then created an account. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tektofd (talkcontribs) 20:26, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tektofd was indefinitely blocked for evading a block. He apparently has dozens of accounts. An admin reverted every edit Tektofd made. 2605:A000:FFC0:D8:3059:8016:5847:3E43 (talk) 13:25, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Publishing a page on Field Philosophy[edit]

Hi, I am working on a page for the emerging branch of applied philosophy which some colleagues and I are developing called Field Philosophy. I have written a simple, broad entry for this topic including some reference materials which can be found https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:JeffGessas/sandbox.

I am not sure whether or not I have successfully submitted this entry for review? How do I move forward with the publishing process from here? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JeffGessas (talkcontribs) 18:48, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

To submit your draft for review, put {{subst:submit}} at the top of the draft. --David Biddulph (talk) 19:13, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I see the submission has now been declined for lack of citations to Reliable sources. I'd suggest, particularly in view of the OP's "the . . . emerging branch of applied philosophy which some colleagues and I are developing. . . . [my italics] that this is a case of Wikipedia:Too soon. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.221.81.75 (talk) 03:34, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Bingo Island on Facebook[edit]

I would like to know if Bingo Island will ever be back on Facebook, I loved playing the game — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:A000:1804:A162:0:5F58:E1C9:C8EC (talk) 23:41, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 5.7 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.-Arch dude (talk) 00:50, 23 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
