Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Football

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For American football, see WikiProject Deletion sorting/American football

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Football (soccer). It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Football|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Football (soccer). For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Sports.

Can't seem to find any WP:SIGCOV on this player beyond basic coverage either from the clubs, his college, or transfer notes. It appears as though he never actually played a professional match, which might be a failure of WP:SPORTBASIC. The only thing of basic substance I found was this, which is local and behind a paywall. Article from an edition of a minor competition in Brazilian football, created more than a year in advance before the event took place. It has questionable WP:GNG and completely fails in WP:TOOSOON and WP:CRYSTAL. Svartner (talk) 17:18, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Played in 5 matches about 6 years ago but hasn't been since. No sign of WP:GNG or even WP:SPORTBASIC #5. The best sources found were a goalscorer listing in Sportal, a transfer announcement based on a social media post in Offside Plus and a squad listing in Redaktor. Played 51 mins at professional level but no significant coverage cited so no WP:GNG pass looks likely. I found a brief quote in Al-Sharq and an injury announcement in Kooora but neither of these are enough for GNG or even WP:SPORTBASIC #5. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 16:45, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Association football player who does not satisfy general notability, and does not satisfy football notability criteria because those redirect to basic sports notability which redirects to general notability. This is a contested draftification. There are three references. The first of them is a database entry which shows that he plays association football. The second and third are articles in Dutch, which, on machine translation, are about the team, and not about him.

Table replaced below. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:17, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment This is manipulation on your part. The third source mentions the player by name that he is the focus of attention of the Bundesliga champion! Then this is laziness on your part as well, and you know that he plays in the Belgian Pro League, which is a professional league. Meaning that the article can be expanded and easily achieves notability. --EpicAdventurer (talk) 16:23, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Question - Where in the 2024 guidelines is there a guideline about presumed notability based on playing in a professional league? Robert McClenon (talk) 18:21, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
He scored 8 goals for God's sake in the 8th best European league!!! EpicAdventurer (talk) 20:30, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
EpicAdventurer: There needs to be WP:SIGCOV. Goals and appearances, unless in specific situations of WP:BIAS, don't count toward WP:GNG. Anwegmann (talk) 20:58, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Are you speaking honestly? What makes football players gain fame and value if not goals and appearances? EpicAdventurer (talk) 21:21, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@EpicAdventurer: Yes, I am, and so is everyone else. Significant coverage in reliable media sources (again, defined at WP:SIGCOV) adds fame and value, as it were, to a footballer's notability. I admit that it's surprising, but this player lacks that significant coverage. I know this is frustrating to you, but it's the only way to make sure that Wikipedia isn't filled with random articles of footballers who lack notability enough to receive full coverage. Anwegmann (talk) 23:16, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You contradict yourself and make readers laugh at these illogical responses. The player plays in the 8th highest-ranked league in UEFA and is active in the Belgian U-19 national team. In addition, I found many sources that directly refer to him. EpicAdventurer (talk) 23:22, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      @EpicAdventurer: Watch out for WP:PA, please. Anwegmann (talk) 23:44, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • 8 goals in 16 Belgian Pro League appearances is very impressive. Wikipedia's notability policy requires WP:SIGCOV, EpicAdventurer. You'd expect lots of good newspaper coverage for such a player. But so far, there doesn't seem to be any. Robby.is.on (talk) 21:46, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Draftify – As WP:ATD. Svartner (talk) 17:23, 14 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's not really about opinion, even though I understand that decisions on AfDs can be very frustrating at times. It's about whether or not there are valid sources enough to fulfill Wikipedia standards. I understand how you feel, to a degree, but you should not give up on this project. This Serbian men's footballer, who was last known for playing in 2015 before disappearing, has not received enough in-depth coverage to meet WP:GNG. The only secondary sources I found are a report of him returning from injury in January and July transfer news, both from mentioned year. I'll admit that I don't know enough Serbian media to know if said sources are reliable, but neither of those pass WP:GNG in my opinion. OK, the relevant Afd was in 2011. Let's ask some questions.

  • Question 1: Notability policies and guidelines have changed since then, haven't they?
  • Question 2: has this particular Association Football team may have gathered some WP:SIGCOV since 2011?

My answers are to these questions

  • Answer 1: Yes, they have changed, and are adverse to the retention of this article. this would appear to me strongly supportive of a "delete" outcome here
  • Answer 2: Nope, not as far as I can see

Despite or possibly because Wikipedia:AFDISNOTCLEANUP I'm fine with any alternate outcome Shirt58 (talk) 🦘 09:18, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Sadly there's nothing really wrong with this article apart from the fact it's for a very dusty far away area of the football world where the team isn't consistently active and where most news gets posted on Facebook instead in newspapers. I think deleting this makes our encyclopaedia worse as it's correct and reliably sourced, but I can't make a good solid argument to keep this, nor is any coverage from the tournament they participated readily available online which could rebut the #2 argument for deletion. So IAR keep from me, which will be discarded, but still, I object. I am sure the competitions they participated in received at least some coverage somewhere, though, similar to the 2023 futsal tournament which was meant to create interest in the sport. WP:LISTN is not met here due to a lack of coverage of the subjects as a group. As it stands, this is an indiscriminate list of mostly non-notable people. Let'srun (talk) 03:28, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yet this list only includes a self-selected number of players, many of whom have no article themselves, and has no sources discussing these players as a group. In my opinion, it is much more appropriate to have a category for the notable players who played here. Let'srun (talk) 17:45, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete. The club was founded in 1935 and such a list would purport to include players from the club's entire existence. There is a huge WP:V barrier that I don't see this list overcoming. How to verify which players played for Saint George SC, how many matches (i.e. who surpassed the 50-match mark, 100, 250 etc.) and when? To me that would seem equally impossible as maintaining and updating the list. Finally, deleting it removes nothing of value, as a category does the job much better. I'm a bit unsure about this one, as he seemed to have a rather robust career, but it was entirely at the non-league, semi-pro level. • Comment I don't know, I don't think redirecting to the players article helps, seems to be an important figure for the club in the 1970s and 1980s, first as a player then as a manager. I'd prefer to keep, however if not, suggest a redirect to the club page Scarborough F.C. His name is mentioned four times on the page, twice as player of the year and twice as manager. As the content on the article is sourced, it maybe a good idea to merge some of the content. Deletion doesn't help anyone. Govvy (talk) 10:42, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
