How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

January songs
in friendship

Thank you for being around, wizard of categories, and for your good Quaker wishes! - Happy new year, in friendship! - One of my pics was on the Main page (DYK) and even made the stats. - In this young year, I enjoyed meetings with friends in real life, and wish you many of those. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:11, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Gerda Arendt: Thanks very much. I should have sent out New Year greetings this year, but I was feeling pretty desultory on the day itself, so I decided to be lazy instead. :-)
Currently I'm waiting out the worst of this latest variant, hoping that it passes before too much longer, and trying to decide what orchestral concerts I want to partake in this year. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra has some attractive options, as does the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. And I'll always support the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra in whatever they try to do. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:25, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
thank you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:02, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
2022 began happily with vacation. I uploaded images but stopped at 22 January - click on songs. 30 January means 10 years of Precious. It's also the birthday of a friend, - I'm so happy I mentioned his DYK on his 90th birthday when he was still alive. I have a great singer on DYK whom I heard, Elena Guseva, and wait for a Recent death appearance of Georg Christoph Biller whom I saw in action. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:17, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Gerda Arendt: Nothing so exciting here, I'm afraid. I'm currently debating whether or not to get a ticket for Jennifer Koh playing Missy Mazzoli's violin concerto with the National Symphony Orchestra this Friday (under Gemma New, for the record). I like Mazzoli's work, and it's in a new hall that I'd like to have a look at. Still sorting out what I want from the rest of the month.
Incidentally, I'm gratified to see that Deutsche Oper Berlin has at least a few free videos on its YouTube channel. Some fodder for future use, perhaps? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:19, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
that sounds fine! - update: we have now Guseva pictured, Biller picured better (but still not on the Main page), and one more day of my pics --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:35, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Gerda Arendt: Very nice. Always nice to see more free images turn up. :-) Later in February we have the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra playing something by Sylvie Bodorová - their conductor is a particular champion of her work, and I've heard something else of hers done by them before. I think I'm going to try and go to that one for sure; I really enjoy the FSO's programming, and feel like they get overshadowed too often by other local groups. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:57, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Offensive and incorrect characterizations of the performers[edit]

The blog post cited is offensive and misinterprets the film and the way the performers are depicted and identify. That is why the revision was made. 68.237.60.251 (talk) 20:08, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Gary_Williams_(singer)[edit]

Hi there! Forgive me if this isn't the right procedure, but although I have edited a few pages and created one on Wikipedia, I am never quite sure what I am doing! There is a page I have worked on for Gary_Williams_(singer) and I have noticed an edit on there that doesn't have a citation and seems potentially derogatory. I don't know how to challenge it in the correct way. I can see you have done a few edits to this page, so wondered if you could help or have a look.

It's the last line in the Broadcasting section that reads:

Williams has done corporate work, mostly instructional videos, modelling himself on the Alan Partridge persona.

His corporate work has no citation. I can see his has a profile on Fiverr where he works but I don't know if this is sufficient. Also the reference to comedian Alan Partridge could be considered derogatory and since it has no citation, it seems like opinion, and I assume should be removed.

Sorry to bother you, but maybe you can help. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bosents (talkcontribs) 14:38, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Bosents: I don't necessarily see the reference as derogatory, but either way: if you don't see a reference, there's no reason you can't remove the line yourself once you've done sufficient investigation. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:28, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

article " Santorin " , the player of a kind of an unknow sport[edit]

Hie, I'm french, and I'd type " Santorin " looking for the greek island of this name, and I found this Player with the same name . 1° there no cross-reference in the entry of the article on the island, or to a page of namesake " Santorin" . 2° by curiosity I read the article about this player, and nowhere there is a word about the sport he use to practrise ! ! ! Which sport ? ! 3° I try to write that in " discussion" but for some reasons, it's complicated for this article, and so I write that at the end of the article, hoping that a person would changed the article and write down the name of the sport, and made cross-reference to the greek island.... Tks for all. --Christofol (talk) 18:18, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Italic titles[edit]

There seems to be a reason why you are doing something here but twice you appear to have un-italicised the title with your change. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:11, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Philafrenzy: Would you happen to have more information on which two? I'm removing a template which has been superseded by a change in infoboxes for some while now - any place I remove it should keep an italicized title due to the infobox in use. I'll take a look and see what's causing the issue. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:21, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Philafrenzy: Thanks. I've fixed the infobox in both cases and removed the hatnote, so everything should be in order (basically, the infobox contained "title of book" as the designator at the line "italic title", which doesn't generate a response from the article). They look OK to me from this end, at least. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:20, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK, why does "italic title =" exist? Philafrenzy (talk) 18:35, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Philafrenzy: If I understand the documentation correctly (not having created the infobox myself), it's so that if there is a reason that the display title should default to something other than fully italic, it can be noted there. If it's not filled in, the infobox defaults to generating an italic title much like the {{italic title}}, superseding it for those pages. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:39, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
How can you see if an infox template has the italic switch? For example Template:Infobox game has an obvious on/off ith |italic title=yes. But looking at Template:Infobox person I can only tell by looking at the title of the infobox example itself. I'll remove the italic template when I see it. Can you point me to a reference to the change so I can reference it in the edit summary when I remove the template. Sciencefish (talk) 08:59, 16 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Sciencefish: See the hatnote at the top of Template:Infobox magazine, for instance; the template tells you when it's designed to automatically italicize the title of a page. There's a handful that do - infoboxes for magazines, books, plays, journals, television series, and films, for instance. So I'd check the infobox template page for information before moving. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 13:03, 16 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, just fixed this edit, which rendered the title unitialicised. Regards, --Goldsztajn (talk) 13:44, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Ser Amantio di Nicolao, I just wanted to let you know that I absolutely love your username! How charming it truly is. I hope the start to your new year has been well. Kindest regards, Spinster300 (talk) 19:53, 18 January 2022 (UTC).[reply]

@Spinster300: Thanks very much - you're very kind. I don't quite know what it is, but I've always been taken with the old-fashioned Italian way of creating professional names - Ser Marcantonio, Ser Amantio, that sort of thing. It's nice to have a character name that's so accessible for it. :-)

Congressional slaveholder mini-project[edit]

I'll likely propose a project for a project on Congressional slaveholders as something to do for Black History Month based on data recently released by The Washington Post. My early draft of the proposal is at The Signpost newsroom, Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/Black History Month

I'm also working on the format of a possible list article User:Smallbones/List of U.S. congressional slaveholders

Praise from one of Wiki's most prolific sock puppets[edit]

HELLO! I once contributed regularly to Wiki..and took special care to contribute an article about intact Biblical graves along the Old Silk Road routes..with a special empahsis on obtaining DNA from these sites, beginning with DNA from the 7 biblical patriarchs & matriarchs who are interred in 'Grave of the Patriarchs' in Hebron. I was severely edited by people who had 'other' religious pursuasions..then came all out edit wars and deletion wars just on that one page...because (they said)I had 'conflicts of interest' because I had written and self-published a book on the topic..Apparently this is a great sin for wiki editors..my article was taken over by others with obvious religious interests that conflicted with alternate p.o.v. My entire family got involved in the struggle to save my page and my name on Wiki...I think I was associated with about 25 alleged 'sock puppets' (that's gotta be a record) and permanently barred from Wiki-- even my name is barred from every wiki page everywhere in the world now..as not being significant or worthy enough. I am resolved to my fate now...but I believe you are all missing one hell of a good topic! geesh,,talk about busting someone's ego!!Wiki did that for me. Every now and again I peek back in on Wiki and those biased editors, and see my original page/ideas remain altered and completely off the mark.. totally destroyed- converted to 'something else' entirely... other religious groups (Christians and Muslims) vie to make their views dominate the topic of Roza Bal, its relics, and my DNA quest...all gone...I lost respect for wiki and most of its editors because of these bad experiences.....I wish there were more like you! Great work. You have my respect sir. Stay safe and have a great day! "Wikimedia list article"[edit]

Hi, I see you are adding the Wikidata short description to some articles here, e.g. [1]. At the short descriptions talk page, there seems to be consensus that this specific short description (either with "Wikimedia" or with "Wikipedia") should not be used on enwiki, as being basically useless. These are normally either replaced by something meaningful, if the list title isn't clear, or (in most cases) changed to "none". Having "Wikimedia list article" is not helpful on enwiki, as "Wikimedia" is unclear for most readers, "Wikipedia is superfluous", and "list article" is usually blatantly obvious from the title already, and doesn't really convey much information. On Wikidata, these descriptions mau be useful to distinguish these from e.g. scientific articles or anything else (and in any case it is their choice and prerogative to use whatever short desc they like), but here, it should be avoided. Fram (talk) 08:38, 17 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Fram: Huh. Thanks for that. Given the number of occasions I've seen it in use I was sure I was on safe ground with it. Just goes to show you...something.
Thanks for letting me know. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 12:52, 17 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, it's not something that one can magically be aware of obviously. Fram (talk) 13:01, 17 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Fram: Oh, certainly. I just find it amusing, as I've been starting to look at short descriptions and finding that in most instances there doesn't seem to be consensus as to what constitutes the best answer. The one place where I thought I saw consensus turns out to be the most problematic. It appeals to my perverse sense of humor, is all. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:02, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bot like editing[edit]

Hi there. Regarding your high speed bot-like editing, I'm sure you have been asked about this previously, but I would prefer you to perform these edits on an alternate account with the bot flag, in accordance with the bot policy. Is there a reason why you don't do this? Best wishes — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 03:55, 24 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@MSGJ: Simple answer: I don't get asked to, generally. Once in a great while, and I've never pursued it because I've never really seen what difference it would make. What I do try and do is watch my edit rate, but it gets away from me once in a while. Usually a sign that I should back off for a bit. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:26, 24 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Short descriptions need to start with a capital letter[edit]

Re these edits, thank you for adding a short description. Per WP:SDFORMAT, short descriptions should start with a capital letter. Don't worry about the ones you have already done; there is a bot that runs periodically to fix them. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:34, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Jonesey95: Great - thanks for the tip. I'm heading out the door in a sec but I'm going to be doing more tonight - I'll remember to tweak the template then. Yes, in my experience, if you use the helper tool to import a Wikidata description like "politician from Ohio" by clicking "Import", the resulting SD will be "Politician from Ohio". – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:55, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oh I think I might have answered my own question by seeing what the code did haha Neighborhood Review (talk) 03:36, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Neighborhood Review: Yes, it's one of the automatic formatting changes AutoWikiBrowser makes whenever I make an edit with it. I wouldn't do it on its own, but as part of a content-adding edit it's a different matter. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 03:51, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Non-admin closure by an involved editor[edit]

Hello! You were at the top of the list of "recently active admins" so to "skip the drama" (WP:ANI), since there's no need for drama over this, I come to you. I noticed that an RFD I participated in, Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2022 March 4#Abeceda, was closed (less than 24 hours after the RFD was initiated) by a non-admin who had also !voted in the discussion. As I understand it from WP:NAC, only uninvolved editors are supposed to close discussions. Should it be reopened? Largoplazo (talk) 20:36, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Largoplazo: I would assume so, but I don't spend a lot of time on that side of things, and I'm about to step away from the computer for a while, so I won't have time to do a proper investigation. I'd ask someone who spends more time over at WP:RFD, honestly. Sorry I can't be of more help. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:39, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

the edit summary says adding[edit]

when all you are doing is adding via awb -

{{short description|None}}

to a significant number of lists of heritage sites in western australia that in many cases might actually deserve something to explain what or where they are?

I know awb has some eds in thrall - but in this case it looks like it might not be what is required, in the even of short descrips being more than a blob or blank or whatever...

JarrahTree 02:53, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@JarrahTree: My understanding is that "list of" articles, generally speaking, don't require a short description because the description of what they are is actually part of the title of the article, and so the short description risks being redundant. That being said, I have no objection to scrubbing my lists of any other such articles when I come across them, and the ones that have already been done can be easily updated. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:56, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough - an explanation thanks for that - who knows what might become of short descrips - btw I suspect your archived talk pages are reminiscent of lewis carrolls the hunting of the snark perhaps? JarrahTree 03:01, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@JarrahTree: Perhaps. Bringing order out of chaos has never been my strong suit, but I've tried desperately with the material in my archives, at least. :-) Ctrl+F helps me more than I'd like to admit.
As a recent convert to working on short descriptions, I feel like there are some kinks yet to be worked out. Chief among them is standardization - I've found that there's a severe lack of standardization in some of the fields I've looked at (i.e.: three different Australian politicians, with short descriptions: "Australian politician", "Australian politician [dates]", or "Prime Minister of Australia", for instance.) Consequently I'm trying to bring at least a semblance of order to bear in the various fields.
There's also the matter of reconciling (or not) short descriptions with Wikidata, which I think makes some sense sometimes and doesn't at other times. List articles seem to me to fall into the latter category - many are labeled "Wikimedia list article" on Wikidata, which seems to me to be less than apposite on Wikipedia.
Ah, well...we learn as we go, I suppose. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 03:07, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How do you edit so fast?[edit]

I was just in the recent change log, and saw like 3 or 4 edits in less than 10 seconds. How is this possible? Iamreallygoodatcheckers (talk) 06:06, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Iamreallygoodatcheckers: Partially AutoWikiBrowser with a good connection; I've also noticed that, for some reason, adding short descriptions to articles goes a lot more quickly than a lot of the other types of edits I make - I'm not sure why the pages save so much faster than when I do other edits. Regardless, I am trying to slow myself down, so thanks for the trout upside the head. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:08, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Iamreallygoodatcheckers: Perhaps, but I really do try to slow it down...otherwise I risk tunnel vision, for one thing. Also overwhelming things like recent changes patrol. Adding blank article descriptions[edit]

Hello there! I wanted to ask why are you intentionally marking article descriptions as 'none'? Emir Shane (talk) 07:48, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Emir Shane: I'm only doing it to list articles - there has been some discussion as to whether or not "Wikipedia (or Wikimedia) list article" (as is used in Wikidata) is a useful short description. I tend to think that it is not, and that most any short description for a list article will reduplicate the title. Hence the use of "none" - see here for further information. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 07:52, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I get it, Thanks for elaborating. I also think that there isn't a need for a description when the title says it all. Emir Shane (talk) 07:55, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Emir Shane: Any time. It's a new world, these short descriptions, and I find I'm still feeling my way around them. And I certainly have no objection if anyone feels that "none" is insufficient and wishes to change it for a given list. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 07:59, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm quite surprised that "none" is considered better than just leaving the template out. But it does say that right in the template doc, and I guess I can kind of see how there might be a technical reason for it. I'm just not super happy about the churn. GA-RT-22 (talk) 15:30, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@GA-RT-22: I do understand it, to a certain extent...otherwise someone might look at the article without short description, think "Oooh, a short description can be added here", and add something. And short descriptions are hidden in the first place, so it takes a conscious effort to go looking for them, generally speaking. It also populates several hidden categories, which I can see would be useful in this instance. As for churn...yeah, I do see the frustration, but there are always going to be tasks which require a certain amount of mass input, and the best I can try to do is to minimize that churn as much as I can. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:22, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Simplefinder33: Usually that's what I would do, and then run it through reFill]. Kindly requesting your help again.[edit]

Hello friend, attempted to add text and new manual cite to Roy S. Durstine page but it assigned me 13, an already in use footnote number. Want to add "In 1935, Durstine created the Cavalcade of America radio program. And cite Cavalcade of America page. Maybe because 13 was footnote just after and I didn't hit return? Hello Ser, I'm doing same thing on John Peale Bishop page. I attempt to add new cite yet it assigns existing footnote number. Thanks in advance for your help.Simplefinder33 (talk) 18:19, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Simplefinder33: That usually means you're adding a source that's already in the article - is it possible that's the case? If not - if you have two different sources sharing a footnote number - you should be getting an error message. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:43, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Ser, idk, I'm putting in URL fine. Please check Roy S. Durstine, I entered text, my URL for Cavalcade of America cite not taking with new footnote. at present, citeless, can you add https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cavalcade_of_America&oldid=1078124160 Simplefinder33 (talk) 19:56, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Simplefinder33: I'm afraid I don't quite see what the problem is. Can you show me a diff? If it's here, you didn't add any references to the article, and the reason Cavalcade of America is in bold is because you didn't add brackets. Is that what you're talking about? --20:08, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

Roy S. Durstine and Cavalcade of America pages[edit]

Hello friend, thank you for being so patient and helpful. You are spot on - I don't see the problem either; however when I paste Cavalcade's address into automatic and generate then insert, or go the manual route, I keep get existing footnote 13 so I abort mission and do not hit publish. I bolded Cavalcade using visualeditor to mimic how it's shown on its' page. Is that OK? Yes, I can try one on John Peale Bishop page where I'm having same issue. Your help is very much appreciated. Simplefinder33 (talk) 13:07, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bravo - It Worked![edit]

Hello Friend - Yay, it worked! I didn't realize that when you hit publish the footnote numbers reorder themselves. Thank you for your support! Simplefinder33 (talk) 14:30, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Mis-tagged orphan articles[edit]

Hi, I am concerned that you recently tagged three articles as orphans that were not. They had extant links in other articles. Michael Marriott (rosarian)‎,Fergus Garrett‎ and Charles Dowding‎. Please have a check back through articles you have tagged as there seems to be some kind of glitch or mistake, perhaps, in software you may be using. Thanks Anna (talk) 03:21, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Anna Roy: That has to do with the settings used by Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser - I would raise the issue at the talk over there if you wish to pursue it; I know one or two other editors have raised it before. That being said...Michael Marriott (rosarian) does not appear to be linked from any other articles - you might want to double-check if there's one you're expecting to see. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:22, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Marriott is mentioned here. I will raise it on the talk page. Anna (talk) 16:07, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ser Amantio, the article you tagged as "orphan" is linked from List of Johns Hopkins University people
Thanks much. March 31 2022. Vidharris (talk) 17:42, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Lists of people from foo[edit]

I've just removed the orphan tag from the List of people from Pembury and List of people from Sevenoaks. Neither of those were orphaned, as they are linked from Pembury and Sevenoaks respectively. Please take care to ensure that only articles and lists with no links from other articles are tagged as orphans. Mjroots (talk) 05:49, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Orphan tagging[edit]

Hi Ser Amantio, List of people from Mainz that you just tagged as "orphan" is linked to (via a redirect) from Mainz, the only place you'd really expect it to be linked from, see Special:WhatLinksHere/List_of_people_from_Mainz. Can you double check your AWB settings so you don't overlook redirects (assuming that is the problem)? Thank you! —Kusma (talk) 08:40, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Must be some other issue. I've just looked through your last 50 edits, and all of the orphan tags you placed are wrong. Please go through your edits and fix these. —Kusma (talk) 08:43, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And same problem at List of people from South Orange, New Jersey. When using AWB, please exercise your responsibility to verify that each and every edit is made correctly. Alansohn (talk) 12:00, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kusma:, Mjroots, Alansohn: this is...huh. I know this is an issue that has come up before - that basically the "orphan" tag is one of a set that AWB automatically adds to articles as part of a series of general fixes - and that my own feeling is I like the other general fixes enough to accept the odd orphan tag. But this isn't an issue that I've faced much before, and I'm wondering if something went wrong with my AWB as a result of my recent computer troubles (I had to re-download it, and I'm wondering if I missed an update somewhere along the way.) I need to look into it further, but I won't have time today, as I'm going to be busy for the next couple of days. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:31, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK, so you're now aware that there is an issue. If you need a couple of days to sort it that is OK. What must not happen is further tagging of articles that are not orphans in the meantime. Mjroots (talk) 17:44, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Per WP:AWBRULES, "You are responsible for every edit made. [emphasis in original] You are expected to review every edit, just as if you were making an edit using Wikipedia's edit form when editing by hand. Do not sacrifice quality for speed, and review all changes before saving." You have been making 20 to 30 AWB edits per minute, which barely gives you more than two or three seconds to press enter to accept the changes, which is nowhere near enough time to review the edits. The fact that these edits are robotically adding "{{short description|None}}" to articles only makes this more frustrating. If you wouldn't add an orphan tag to an article without checking that there are no links, you shouldn't be doing it using AWB. The ends do not justify the means, even if your "own feeling is I like the other general fixes enough to accept the odd orphan tag." Why is it my job to remove a tag you added as part of a series of mass edits that added nothing of any use to the article and that should have been done by a tested and approved bot? Alansohn (talk) 17:47, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Mjroots: I had an answer written out about how I was going to be away for a few days and how it was unlikely I would be able to troubleshoot until next week...and then I find out that there's been a fix since late 2020, and I either didn't notice it, or had it in place until the recent system reboot and forgot about it (which knowing me is quite possible) (and please don't ask me to try and remember what I was doing in November 2020...I'm not sure it's possible at this juncture). So the point's moot, then - I'll implement the fix, and that should be that. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:32, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

People editing Mariupol to say the Russians have taken it[edit]

According the news I consume (CNN, currently on), this is jumping the gun even if it seems likely to happen. I reverted the new user. Exactly the same words were returned to the lede a few minutes later by an IP. My edit summary had said that this needs to at least be sourced. Another redlinked username has just added a source, which says that Putin says he is going to barricade the steel factory. This is not the same thing imho as “has control of Mariupol” and why would we believe him anyway?

This might seem a bit subtle but it all looks sketchy to me and I am just a humble user who has already reverted once, so could you please take a look, or, if you are not available, let me know so I can try someone else? In case you are wondering, I am asking you in particular because you were on a list of recently active admins. Thanks for whatever you do. Question about Serena Williams (early career) article[edit]

Hi, I noticed you created a 'low importance' article on Serena Williams's early career and was wondering why this wasn't just included in the main Serena Williams article? Could you take a look at whether protective measures are needed[edit]

on Robert Barnes (attorney)? I note that you are the only Admin who has had input into this article. There has been recent edit-warring by IP users, both attacking and praising the subject, none of it directed at producing a better article in keeping with WP standards (ignoring NPOV, RS and/or OR). The most active of these IP editors has ignored a request to take the issues to the talk page. So I am suggesting that you implement a lock on the article at least temporarily (for an extended time?), limiting further editing to auto-confirmed or extended-confirmed users? (Separately, I would question the genuine notability of the subject, and wonder whether the article should be discussed and considered for possible deletion.) PDGPA (talk) 16:15, 28 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@PDGPA: Really not my bag...that being said, having a look at it I think it's still at the level of a content dispute right now. I would suggest WP:ANI as a next step before page protection. ---Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:22, 28 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Alleged painters[edit]

Please, if you can't be bothered doing the short descriptions properly, stop doing them at all! I suppose you are picking people up from "painter" categories, & just assuming that "Fooish painter" is an adequate short description. It very often isn't. Look at this one. I know the guy & it was news to me he painted at all. The rather peacocky bio says he is a "opera director and designer, filmmaker, writer, painter, interior designer, art editor, creative director and curator", mentioning an exhibition in 2013, probably of his stage designs. I'd put "painter" at the very end of the list, if I included it at all. He's certainly not notable as a painter. These would also be better if you added a death (or birth) date. Johnbod (talk) 00:40, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Johnbod: I try to refine things as carefully as possible, but things do slip through from time to time. Thanks for spotting...I've revised accordingly and will attempt to keep a better eye on things in future. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:42, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Johnbod Maybe it's none of my business, but I don't understand the point of your snarky comment. The "short descritions," like anything else on Wikipedia, can be edited by anyone who feels they can make them better. Why not just do it yourself, rather than complain to Ser Amantio, who does so much, and clearly tries so hard, to improve WP every day? PDGPA (talk) 02:05, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@PDGPA: With respect: Johnbod had every right to bring up his concerns to me, and I'm glad that he did so. Whether or not I do so much, or try so hard...I am not infallible, and I appreciate having my errors pointed out to me, so that I can address them, defend the reasons behind the questioned edits if I feel it necessary, or otherwise to work to improve my editing. A concern was raised, I've said I'd address it: as far as I'm concerned the matter is closed. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 03:38, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot merge two wikidata items[edit]

Hello, Ser Amantio di Nicolao,

I have a problem, I cannot merge two wikidata items, maybe because of, in the English Wikipedia there are two lists of municipal presidents of San Luis Potosí City or San Luis Potosí Municipality

In the Wikipedia in English there are two "similar" lists of municipal presidents of San Luis Potosí City. I think List of presidents of San Luis Potosí Municipality (the TOO short and incomplete list) must be DELETED, and List of mayors and municipal presidents of San Luis Potosí City (the long list, with more references) must be PRESERVED.

This situation appeared when I was trying to merge two items at Wikidata: Q24062676 and Q111955806, because I believed both of them simultaneously link to their respective lists in the English Wikipedia and in the Spanish Wikipedia Anexo:Alcaldes de San Luis Potosí, but I am not sure.

What IT IS CERTAIN to me, is that List of mayors and municipal presidents of San Luis Potosí City and Anexo:Alcaldes de San Luis Potosí are "one and the same", except for the languages.

When I was trying to merge the above-mentioned Wikidata items, the system returned a message: "Error:". The older item, with the earlier number is https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24062676; the newer one, https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q111955806.

Could you please help me? That is, in the case I am right.

(On 10 May 2022, I had posted an almost identical message to this one, to User talk:Rodw, but I had not noticed that he is on a long vacation, since 19 April 2022.)

"Removing from Category:Brazilian footballers in subcat"[edit]

Hi. Could you explain the "Removing from Category:Brazilian footballers in subcat" changes? Example at Adryan: [2] Robby.is.on (talk) 12:11, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Robby.is.on: See WP:DIFFUSE - they are in the category "Category:Footballers from Rio de Janeiro (city)." That said, I'm about to revert - there's no hatnote on the parent category, but it seems that there should be (se Category:English footballers for an example of what I'm talking about.) I would recommend a similar hatnote to prevent something like this in the future. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 12:15, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation. Does that mean "Brazilian footballers" is a "non-diffusing" category?
A related question: If "Brazilian footballers" were a diffusing category and I were to search for "Brazilian footballers" like so [3] would that return a subject that's in the "Footballers from Rio de Janeiro (city)" category? Robby.is.on (talk) 12:21, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Robby.is.on: I can't answer your first question: I would say that it should match other footballer-by-nationality categories, whatever their designation. There should be consistency across the board.
For the second, I'm not especially familiar with the way the search feature works, but I would assume as much. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 12:30, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Removals of italic title template[edit]

Hi - I random checked 20 of these changes, I found 5 ([4] [5] [6] [7] [8]) that had been rendered unitalicised. Perhaps worth checking back over those changes. Firstly, hello from Serbia! Secondly, how you came to that Parni Valjak's song Sve jos mirise na nju is actually a sample of Rijeka suza i na njoj ladja? Last but not least, you added this as sound-alike on January 12, 2021. Thank you! EmiliaITČA (talk) 18:01, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@EmiliaITČA: I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I didn't make that edit - it was made before I edited the article. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:52, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, sorry. EmiliaITČA (talk) 18:55, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

bushra fakhoury[edit]

She does not want her age (via her date of birth) known. Worried about unfair age discrimination Eugeneoconnor (talk) 18:42, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Eugeneoconnor: That category doesn't necessarily invite people to search for a date of birth. It merely indicates that the article lacks one. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:44, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

added nonbreaking spaces[edit]

Hi Ser Amantio di Nicolao, thank you for your unbelivable large number of Wikipedia improvements. In this case, though, I wonder why you inserted all these  . Was this an error of some tool you use for editing? I've removed them now again. --Cyfal (talk) 21:32, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Cyfal: That's...odd. All I did was highlight the name of the vessel and click on the "Bold text" button at the top of the edit screen. I can't imagine why it should cause that to happen.
That'll teach me to automate such a simple task. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:35, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed strange! Thank you for your quick answer! --Cyfal (talk) 21:38, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
