1989

Can you say if this was an important year for climate science in Australia? I have a magazine in front of me that claims there were reports in the newspapers about the record low rainfall in south-western Western Australia, apparently at the same time there was flooding in the north-west? I can't say anything either way regarding wether it was a significant year in that respect. I can say however, that Australia is on a big continent that spans many different climatic zones so the tropical and subtropical can't be compared with the temperate, etc. Remember that climate change isn't only about increased temperatures, it will also bring increased rainfall, temperate regions will tend more towards subtropical, etc. Have a chat to User:Granitethighs, we're part of the editing team rewriting the Sustainability article, he can probably remember 1989 better than me so give that a shot :] Nick carson (talk) 08:02, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Could you put the question to him for me, please? The only sustainability issue I know anything about is mandatory accounting... and that hardly ever comes up in conversation. Agree; Hobart is currently only 19. (Typical Hobart weather I suppose) Launceston has had three days in a row over the record temperature before this heatwave. I'll have to add a small section about Flinders Island, which broke the state record temperature on Thursday, then Scamander broke that record yesterday. When the state gets hot, it's normally Hobart getting into the high 30's but not this time. Strangely the area's about 30km inland from Hobart have been getting into the high 30's and Mount Wellington was warmer than Hobart for much of yesterday. Can you remember what was said about sourcing on the talk page? Just because you may hear something on the radio doesn't mean you add it but if you get sources to back it up you can add it. It just stops misinformation from getting in the article. We're in the same boat with the sleep and the smoke and everything. I can assure you that any info I add won't be completely unsourced. Policy is in need of amendment regarding the inclusion of non-commercial radio sources amongst other things, and this also annoys me. I can understand your frustration with people adding completely unsourced information and I suppose we can hold off on some inclusions until we get a WP out of date policy certified source. This map may help you with drawing your map[2]. Also do you know of the map for Beechworth which looks like this map? Just worried on the location ATM and trying to forecast it's location in the next few days (if it's not under control). ATM I'm about 140 - 200km north of the Beechworth fire and the smoke this thick but what was scary yesterday afternoon there was a fire to my west (2km away but was quickly undercontrol) and another fire about 40km to the SE (now undercontrol but was a hairy fire from what I've heard.) Re: Vic fires

I noticed your comment about the cause. I've posted this here as it's not really for the article.

The fires that went though Kinglake and Marysville move so quickly due to a number of things that came together. First of all you had the hot Northwesterly dry ahead of a heat trough which was moving though Victoria, then there was hotter dry air in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere which mixed down to the surface which pushed all of the fire danger (Forest and Grass) index to 3 digit levels (100 - 300 which is really off the scale), with the trough getting closer to Melbourne in the afternoon which strengthened the winds in the fire area with winds gust reaching strong to gales force (IE the spotting going km's ahead of the fire) add to that instability ahead of the trough was there but only if temperatures got to the right levels which it did under the fires which caused a number of Pyro-cumulonimbus (Fire made thunderstorms) clouds which had no rainfall but a lot of lightning (starting more fires) as well as possibly having Microbursts which just turned the fire into an inferno (Temperatures would have been 600 - 1000°C judging by the melted metals such as melted alloy wheels). The Bureau of Meteorology will be releasing a report at a later date which could be for sometime before it's released since there will be a Royal Commission which will no doubt delay it. Well the fires also created there own "weather". Some thought the change (trough) moved though but it had as it the change didn't move though Melbourne until the late afternoon/evening and didn't reach the fire areas until about 8 - 10 pm. Oh also the smoke here this morning was like a thick morning fog (which you see in Winter) with visibility down to 2.2/2.5km. No photos as I was heading to work, which makes working outside hard but cleared up a little during the day. Bidgee (talk) 11:11, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Death Toll 2009 Victorian Fires

Hi Nick. I now that the VP site has not been updated but there are multiple news sources quoting the death toll at 210. A resident of Strathewen died in hospital today. Heatwave dispute in lead "Feb 2009 Victorian Bushfires"

I noticed there are OR tags in the lead on the sentence explaining the heatwave as one of many contributing factors to the fires. This is a 'sky is blue' statement and additionally, sources are provided in the dedicated article and the section further below. Nick carson (talk) 02:20, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Nick, if you feel that the OR tag is unnecessary then feel free to remove it. However, there is no reference to heat waves as being a proximal cause of the fires in any cited article that I can see. Although heat waves may seem an obvious contributor to these and other fires to most people it still requires an expert reliable source to confirm it as a "proximal cause" and that has definitely not been provided. Anything else is pure conjecture. Also, if heat waves are such an obvious "the sky is blue" notion in relation to fires, is it necessary to state it as a cause?

Thinking about this issue further, are heatwaves actually a "cause" of fires? They obviously contribute to making conditions worse but they are no more a cause of fires than the dry conditions or the fuel load in the forests. Wouldn't a cause have to be something that actually ignited the fires e.g. lightning, arson, cigarettes etc.? I guess the test is if the temperature alone can cause spontaneous combustion of forests and grasslands etc. Is there any evidence supporting this hypothesis? Correlation does not necessarily lead to causation, although it is often tempting to come to this conclusion. Only scientific study can give us anything close to a factual answer.

I understand that the CSIRO will be releasing a paper on the fire aspects of the heat wave sometime soon. This is probably where we should look for reliable commentary on heatwaves and their relationship to bushfires. Cheers Scrooke (talk) 20:45, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Agreed. The royal comission and the BoM and the CSIRO and all those mobs are currently preparing such reports which will be big sources of factual complete information for us on these interrelated events.

I'm not sure the use of the term proximal cause is as clear cut as a term could be, I reckon something more like ...X & Y & Z & the heatwave, contributed to the conditions experienced on the 7th of February that led to the Kinglake Complex Firestorm etc. Nick carson (talk) 07:15, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Ruffey Lake Park copyedit

I just had someone go over the article after my changes to the layout:

• map too big - thumb it
• do u really need a gallery for just 2 pics?
• Refs need improvement; try using a citation tool
• I think I'd reorganize it a bit; sections are short and not really about the topic from their headings, e.g. History is only really 1 sentence about history
• Don't need so many subsections - unless you plan to expand each one a lot

Hi Ottre. The article was still under construction so it might be a bit early for a copyedit. Don't go changing sections and whatnot as the information you are assessing the article on only applies to complete articles. What we do need done on this article is a redirect removal to separate out "Ruffey Creek", "Ruffey Lake" and "Ruffey Lake Park", at present, all 3 redirect to Ruffey Lake Park which means I cannot create the other two articles. Your recent edit on the Wonthaggi Desalination Plant was an unsound rumor that contained no source so I therefore removed it. No worries, I'm really worried about the bias in the article, there needs to be more representation of accuracies such as lack of environmental report, corruption within the government/private partnerships and the fact that it isn't required in the first place, the government could just invest in efficient water usage and sustainable water management. I have finally made good my threat of redoing this list (and renaming it)-fairly complete, a few places yet unlocated and may be some neighbourhoods placed in the wrong locality (on the other side of road or creek etc) so could use some help on this (All the spelling is OK though)- Many of the linked articles where all the info. is supposed to be will need some work but I will be doing this shortly. 1925-26 & 1943-44 bushfire info

Hi Nick, the articles I've started are for two of the most notable Victorian bushfire seasons as defined at the EMA disasters database. I agree that the less notable seasons can be solely covered in Australian bushfire season articles. For the 1925-26 article, the overall statistics are aggregated for the period between February and March (the event period defined by EMA), not just Black Sunday, so I don't think it would be suitable to rename it under that title. I'm not sure, what were the circumstances of Black Sunday Feb-March? In the past fires have been ignited on a particular day, then continue to burn for a period of time, these large ignition events are usually named, even if the fires continue to burn afterwards. The EMA datababase shows the 1926 bushfires as an event that spanned 37 days between February 1 and March 10, claiming 60 lives. The worst day of this was 'Black Sunday' February 14 which claimed 31 lives in the Warburton area. Melburnian (talk) 11:59, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

I uploaded some Flickr images to Commons and added them to Unconventional wind turbines#Rooftop wind-turbines. Rooftop wind turbines are an interesting niche technology, but small wind turbines in general have a lower EROEI than large wind turbines. Thus the rooftop wind turbine is not as effective for cutting carbon dioxide emissions as investing the same money in building a small share of a large wind farm. On the other hand, urban wind turbines tend to be highly visible and can have educational value. Fewer people are likely to get out and visit a remote wind farm off in a place like North Dakota. The best wind resources tend to be in places where not many people live, in part because windy places are rather unpleasant. Wonthaggi desalination plant

I'm not having a good time with your edits. I am finding them too pov and the language used sometimes doesn't help. The article on the desal plant should naturally have as much information as possible and this includes information created by opponents (which I assume you are one). Yet to make such an article good to read, you need to remove as much biased language as you possibly can so that the reader can make up their own mind, rather than using words/phrases that are intended to sway the reader. Example:

Comparitively, the Kwinana Desalination Plant in Perth was completed in 2006, has roughly 30-50% the output of the Wonthaggi plant, however, it cost a mere $387 million to build.

Apart from the spelling mistake (which is anathema to all wikipedia editors), using the word "mere" diverts readers from fact to opinion. An editorial or a opinion piece is where "mere" should be used. Moreover, comparing the two costs is not a good idea anyway because it fails to take into account certain facts such as the cost of building longer water pipes from the Bass Coast to Melbourne compared to Kwinana and Perth - but these facts are irrelevant anyway because there is no external link to a reputable article discussing it. If an article in The Age or the ABC appeared where someone was discussing the comparative costs between Wonthaggi and Kwinana then it would certainly be appropriate to have it in the article. Without such an external link, Wikipedia turns into a place for original research and that is not what should occur in any article.

FWIW, I support Desal plants but I'm also supportive of cheaper and more efficient ways of water management. That's my bias but I try not to let it influence what I write (I had to edit the Kurnell Desalination Plant page from being too supportive of the project). You've obviously got your own bias but I would encourage you to try and write more neutrally.

BTW - being biased is not a problem, letting it affect your writing at Wikipedia is.

In short, I would suggest:

• Check your spelling.
• Use neutral language.
• Never use original research.
• Always link to (reputable) external sources.

On Wikipedia, I neither support or oppose the desalination plant. This is an encyclopedia and as such I keep my opinions to myself and contribute what information I can to the best of my abilities, skills, knowledge and access to resources in an unbiased manner. The portrayal of the proposed plant as such in encyclopedic form as close to reality as possible, reveals inherent truths about the proposed plant that supporters may not wish to acknowledge. I am willing to acknowledge any realities about the proposed plant, favour them the opponents or the supporters.

The reality of the situation with this subject matter is that the justification for the proposal was based on inadequate assessments, predictions and imperial material and in truth, the plant and any water manufactured thus, is not required. The proposed utilisation of a public-private partnership (PPP) is pushing up the overall cost of the plant, will push up the cost of water manufactured at the plant and will generate substantial profits for investors in the plant. If the proposal was required, the best option would have been to publicly fund, own and operate the plant. In addition, residents will not be given the option to choose where the water they drink comes from, these end users were not consulted at any stage and international law advises against the private ownership of water as it is a basic human right to access clean, free, drinking water. All of the above is entirely factual.

My personal opinion is an entirely different matter and not one up for discussion here on WP. I maintain that my edits have been unbiased and well-informed and would go so far as to suggest that they may be better informed than those of other editors of the article in question. Nick, I am a little concerned at this and the accompanying edit summary. Firstly, you reinstated at least two spelling mistakes by doing that. Secondly but more significantly you maligned me by stating "reverted edits by Moondyne, was not merely sp & gr edits, rather, a reword, which portrays critisism of the proposal in an unbiased light". I stand by each of the edits and their edit summaries; perhaps you just saw the last one (17:43) which was "typos" and which was exactly that. This edit had the most material change on that day and was under the edit summary of "typos, grammar". The change was exactly that and not some skulduggery as you seem to be implying. Perhaps you can explain the phrase "... portrays critisism of the proposal in an unbiased light". I really don't know what that means. I see a failure to assume good faith. Thirdly, your edit was not a simple reversion but included changes of your own, as can be seen from the byte count on the history page.

Bottom line here is I'm not seriously bothered about any of this — I have a fairly thick skin. I would just ask that you assume good faith and know that I am only trying to improve the article, which I believe is still in a very poor condition. Desal plant images

No. Sorry. From where I happened to be it wasn't a practical photographic subject. There were also roadworks happening on the roads leading to the site of the plant, preventing anyone but locals and site workers getting near the place. In the particular case of Hope for Haiti, I was presenting the subject matter in a neutral point of view. You'll find that the Good Friday Appeal, held in Victoria, Australia, annually since 1931, raises over $10 million every year ($13.8 million in 2009). This is just for one hospital, not an entire country, and draws from a population of merely 5 million, as opposed to the 300 million that live in the United States. Despite these facts, the Good Friday Appeal is not widely publicised around the world in patriotic fashion, it's not about publicity, it's about raising money for a hospital. They are also able to offer running tallies! I live in Australia and there has been massive criticism of 'Hope for Haiti', such criticism is well founded, especially when you consider that a large portion of the donations came from a handful of wealthy celebrities.

I am under the impression that WP policies regarding verifiability and reliable sources are in need of amendment and despite such, are always open to questioning and suggestion. I am positive there are many sources that stand up to current WP policy, which I can use to cite my contributions if I had the time (I am only one person in a sea of nationalist partiotism) but I get the feeling this article is presented in a biased manner and such criticisms of the 'Hope for Haiti' fund raising is frowned upon, even within the WP community.

Swallow your pride and face up to the realities that the fundraiser has raised more in publicity and advertising for United States entities and individuals than it did for the victims of Haiti. The Black Saturday bushfires killed a mere 173 people and yet 22 million Australians were able to muster over $370 million! Present the article's subject matter in a neutral point of view and cite those sources that are out there. The bias within the article as it stands is totally pathetic. You have two options. First (and the much preferred option): Create a sandbox page (user subpage) to create the article, and get it into good shape first, then when it's ready you can copy it onto a new article page in the main Wikipedia article space. The article still may be deleted if the subject doesn't meet notability standards, but it usually stands a much better chance this way. Second: When you post a new article, put a {{underconstruction}} tag at the top, which lets admins and other editors know you're working on this article. You can also put a comment on the article's talk page saying something like, "I only get on Wikipedia once every few days, so give me a little time to flesh this out." Spoken like a true inclusionist. As you may expect, I disagree pretty much 100%. I think you're just ticked off because your article was deleted. I see this reaction on occasion, though not as much as you might think. If you really, truly think this record company is notable, post the article again and come up with some verifiable references. But be advised that I may nominate it for deletion again (not by speedy) if I don't think it meets notability requirements. I can't begin to tell you how many garage bands (often formed a week ago) and their record company counterparts that I see in new-page patrol, virtually all of which are not even close to being notable. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 04:07, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

That would be the case in an ideal word. But in fact, the vast majority of articles which are speedy deleted are absolute garbage, and the time taken to ostensibly "improve" those articles is wasted. Spend some time on new page patrol and you'll see that reality is far different from your idealistic notions. Street art in Melbourne

Hi, I've added some pics and references to the Street art in Melbourne page. So far the gallery's a pretty good selection of obscure/understated posters and experimental street art forms and more prominent graff/stencils in the laneways, but I've got some other pics worth adding. Do you think the gallery should be a limited to a certain number of pics (for the sake of quality > quanity)? It's currently at 24, which seems ideal. Didgeridoo photos

In reference to your photo of the 3 types of didgeridoos: It appears that the top instrument (that you list as traditionally crafted & decorated) appears to be a "tourist" didgeridoo, decorated in a non-traditional way. Perhaps it was made entirely by Aboriginals, but it appears to have been made for tourist trade and does not appear to be made by Aboriginals from the traditional region of the didgeridoo. Warrandyte, Victoria

G'day Nick,

I was just reading Wiki article "Warrandyte, Victoria", where I was born 1955, left as soon as I could count the bus fare, returned 1992 and remain here. My father's family had strong associations in Warrandyte for several generations.

In section 2.5 "The Bridge", there is an error and typo. It says "....the bridge was located 5 mi east of the current bridge..." this is in fact not so, the old bridge was just (yep, say 5 metres) west of the current bridge (virtually congruent).

Pre-mining, the first european inhabitant was Captain Selby, who as a grazier had a "selection" encompassing Tills Drive and "Black Flats" and Selby Store (now known as "Stonehouse Cafe"). "Black Flats" was site of last indigenous Aborigine corroboree in the region.

"Norman's Reserve" at "Pound Bend", was notorious not as a reserve due to normal habitation by local Aborigines, but as a transition camp for Aborigines of Melbourne area etc, being dispossessed and moved to Lake Tyres and other such remote locales. Effectively it was a transition prison.

Section 2.2, the "cairn" is not located on "Fourth Hill" as stated. It is located adjacent Andersen's Creek and Gold Memorial Road. The tunnel at "Pound Bend" was known to locals as "Evelyn Tunnel" (see Wiki article "Pound Bend Tunnel"). Where it says "Some areas continued to be mined up until the 1960s", this is not so. The last mine continuing from the Gold Rush days was the Caledonia mine, which continued to operate up until 1914. In about 1968, local newcomer identity Richard Darby (nick-named "Wishbone" from the cantankerous cook GW (George Washington) Wishbone of the early 60s TV series "Rawhide"), re-opened the "Little Victory" mine in "Whipstick Gully" (just 100 metres from the Pub). He worked the mine by hand for about 5 years and allegedly made enough money to buy a new Holden Kingswood (back when gold was bought at $32 per oz). See Herald article of the time (by my brother) "Its Gold Again".

I have to go for tea, but before I go, James Anderson was fossicking subsequent to the Victorian Govt offering a reward for the discovery of gold (after the discoveries in NSW.) Allegedly and as told at school, gold was discovered at Warrandyte by Anderson, who jumped on his horse and rode to Melbourne to make claim on the reward. The next day, in strode a bloke who discovered gold in Clunes, at least a day and a half further away than Warrandyte. The Clunes / Warrandyte dispute goes on, but the Govt never issued the reward, so neither man nor horse benefited by the Govt..

I may get time to further review the "Warrandyte, Victoria" entry.

July WMAU Melbourne Meetup

Wikipedia Page Warrandyte, Victoria

I had a read of the page Warrandyte, Victoria. Having lived in Warrandyte for 58 years, and my parents and some predecessors before that, I find the article inaccurate or significantly incomplete from an historical perspective. The previous inclusive "Warrandyte" page was more historically accurate and inclusive (albeit it retained historical and geographic errors).

It is undoubtedly reasonable, in the light of divisive bureaucratic cleavage of the town, that two separate Wikipedia pages are made, however, it is not reasonable, that the Warrandyte page has no reference to North Warrandyte, despite it being until recently all as one Warrandyte. It is reasonable that the page mention South Warrandyte as a separate place, as it always has been, and is more than 3 kilometres from Warrandyte township, closer to Park Orchards, and more serviced by Ringwood. North Warrandyte, however, uses all the services, amenities and commercial facilities of the town centre South of the river.

For the entire 20th C, the people have complained about the division of the town catchment into municipalities of Eltham (now Nillumbik) and Doncaster & Templestowe (now Manningham), and in the greater identified Warrandyte catchment Eltham, Doncaster & Templestowe, Croydon, Lilydale, and Ringwood municipalities. The net result being the under-servicing of the town. Historically, the people of the region have identified themselves as Warrandytians within these approximate bounds; Coleman Rd, Delany's Road, Brumbies Lane., Anzac Av (Johansons Lane), Hoopers Rd, Bourchiers Rd, Bellbird Lane, Cowden Rd, Beauty Point Rd, Shorts Rd, Glynns Rd, and then the bounds of Mullum Mullum Creek.

To this day "North Warrandyte remain substantially under-serviced by Nillumbik municipality, and the State Govt, in its Bushfire Emergency brochure requires all people (including those of "North" Warrandyte) to congregate at the Warrandyte recreation ground. No doubt it is because there is no "Safe" area in "North" Warrandyte (with the majority of "Warrandyte" residences) Again a bureaucratic blunder (and extremely dangerous one) and lack of interest of the municipalities, that would have a major bottleneck and extreme death risk at the bridge.

I note for example, that all the mentioned artists (a few of the many) possibly with the exception of Harold Herbert, lived in North Warrandyte, so in light of the separation should not be on this page, but the North Warrandyte page. A good reference would be the book, Rebels and Precursors, by Richard Haese.

Irony generally refers to an event that was the opposite of what was expected and/or contradictions. I don't think it can be said to be "ironic" that Seachange led to an increase in tourism; this is probably a reasonably expected outcome. Currawong Bush Park Management Plan, November 2003

I'm helping my daughter to do some work for a school project on the kangaroos at the Currawong Bush Park. We've found your article on the park to be really useful.

I believe that you inserted a reference to the November 2003 Currawong Bush Park Management Plan when editing that article on 24 September 2008. We've tried to get a copy of that Management Plan from the Manningham City Council, but they don't seem to have it. I know that your edit is over 12 years old, but is there any chance that you still have it? If so, could you please send it, or otherwise make it available to me?
