Welcome!

Hello, Cuddy Wifter, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. The picture you have removed from "Laverton, Victoria" page, featuring a vehicle prevalent in the Laverton area holds a marked similarity to the "Toorak Tractor" image featured on the "Toorak, Victoria" page which you have contributed to in the past. I cannot see why a "Toorak Tractor" image should be allowed to remain while a picture of a vehicle which is iconic of the Laverton area must be removed. Furthermore, I question your reasoning as to why you have cited your edit of this page as a removal of vandalism.

I am sorry about that. I was unfamiliar with that policy and the rules that go with it. That'll teach me to not read things. My bad. tv316 05:08, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Horse racing distances[edit]

I have noticed that you have inserted a comma into the race distance in a couple of horse racing articles, which I have reverted. The general convention in Australian racing media and publications is not to insert the comma when giving the distance of a race. The Manuel of Style states: Very large numbers may be divided up by commas every three places. Regards - Cuddy Wifter 05:23, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia isn't a racing publication. In my opinion it should have internal consistency, but I'm not interested in racing so I probably won't visit the page again. ReeseM 23:59, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is Prosper Trebeck 'from Victoria'?[edit]

Hi Cuddy. I've started a discussion on this here...

Category_talk:People_from_Victoria

I just wasn't certain if this category applies or if we should apply other categories for NSW and West Bengal.

Thought you might have an opinion.

Factoid Killer 20:47, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I came across the article in a google search for uncategorised "Victoria, Australia" articles. On the basis of the information in the article I thought Category:People from Victoria was one appropriate category. Can you suggest other categories which are more appropriate? Does Wikipedia have any guidelines on "People from or of place" which would apply in this case? - Cuddy Wifter 03:42, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Australian Expatriate cats[edit]

Hello Cuddy Wifter. Regarding your recent Aus expat cat placements, I have reverted some of them because "expatriate" is generally taken to mean "residing in a foreign country". I believe it is accurate to say that when a person returns to live in their home country they are no longer considered an expatriate. I also do not believe people who have died are considered expatriates any longer. Cheers. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 08:37, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. The definition above was straight from the dictionary, but this is Wikipedia's: "An expatriate (in abbreviated form expat) is someone temporarily or permanently residing in a country and culture other than that of their upbringing and/or legal residence." I honestly do not see how people who have returned home or have died fit within that. Most notable Australians have lived overseas at one point. And so I think it is very confusing and misleading to label every Australian who has at one time in their life lived overseas as an expat. Further, I don't see the relevance of the British cats. Two mistakes dont make a right. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 03:04, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I make the distinction based on what the word ACTUALLY means and what most people understand it to mean. I make a further distinction based on the fact that Australians are famous for spending time living overseas and to include all of them would render the category meaningless, bogged down and entirely unruly. I do not make a distinction between former and current footballers because a. there are a hell of a lot less of them and b. it is a career.
I merely came here to pay you the courtesy of informing you why I had reverted some of your edits. I have no interest in arguing with you. You can do whatever you want but I will remove people who are incorrectly categorised. Thankyou. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 05:12, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Racing[edit]

I saw your note on my user page. Thanks. I guess this is about "Category: Racehoreses bred in the United States". This is a reasonably important category. Someone suggested it be merged with "Category: American racehorses". I guess this OK too. I will keep an eye on it to see that they don't come up with an unworkable solution. Wallie 08:22, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

i have commented as well. I think that it would be good to go much further than this and have some discussion on horseracing in general. Even look at starting a portal. I think all the information could be much better presented. dark horse 05:01, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

further to that i think that it would be a good idea to support a wikiproject on thoroughbred horseracing as suggested by Galopin. considering the size and limited contributors possibly seperate projects for Europe, US and AUS. These could then be merged once more complete. There is Wikipedia:WikiProject_Thoroughbred_racing which has had next to nothing done to it and seems USA focused. You may have seen me working through the G1 winners in australia (slowly) my idea is to complete the winners of all blacktype races and then complete profiles for all hall of fame horses (firstly) in the style of the Tulloch article. Added to this i want to develop a standard for summaries, race records etc. i quite like the idea of info boxes like they have for football (soccer) players. A summary including info on basic breeding, colour, year foaled, owner, trainer, race record, prizemoney, major wins, awards, sire stats and a photo would look good. Let me know what you think (dark horse 04:11, 4 July 2006 (UTC))[reply]

got your message about the CAPS - an oversight by myself. will work towards fixing these. am working on a few recruits with great australian racing knowledge, hopefully to get this whole project firing. (dark horse 05:53, 6 July 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Thoroughbred racing[edit]

G'day. You are right, if Wikipedia is to have articles on the subject of horseracing around the world, then there needs to be some consistency and co-ordination. I have no special interest, I started the Harry Wragg article under "Harry". My comment about "race-ist" was supposed to be facetiuos. Guy 09:54, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Organizing Thoroughbred racing into a Wikipedia project is a great idea. Regretfully, for now I am tied up with other duties but ASAP will get back to Wikipedia and would then be glad to help out in any way possible. Handicapper

I will try to help out with the Thoroughbred racing project but can't personally claim to be a real expert. My dad trains racehorses for a living (I have resisted writing an article about him; I don't think he is particularly well known) but he has a wealth of knowledge and if I could only persuade him to help out I'm sure he would be useful. --Wikipediatastic 15:30, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Stonnington[edit]

A climate is a pattern of weather distinct to a particular region. A suburban municipality doesn't have a climate distinct from the rest of the city of which it is a part. The table I deleted gave figures for Melbourne as a whole, not for Stonnington. Adam 07:01, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nevertheless they are not figures for Stonnington, and of course no such figures exist. It is absurd to discuss the "climate" of a small area of suburbia as though it was a climatic region distinct from the city as a whole. Adam 07:17, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fifth Melbourne meetup[edit]

The fifth meetup of Melbourne Wikipedians is being planned as a breakfast meeting in the city with Jimbo Wales (at a venue to be arranged) on Friday, 27 April 2007.

Jimbo has proposed breakfast as the one real window of opportunity during his tightly scheduled stay in Melbourne. Tbe precise time has to be sorted out with Jimbo, but the arrangements for the equivalent Adelaide meetup a few days before may give a good idea.

Feel free to edit the relevant page in any way that might be helpful. I feel like a bit of an interloper, not having attended previous meetups. If there's anything you can do to help, I'll be grateful. Please think about whether you'll be able to make it, assuming the arrangements are similar to those Adelaide is adopting (i.e. a block of time with people being fairly free to arrive when it suits them). Some indication on the page of your possible participation would be really helpful. Metamagician3000 06:10, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Chipping Norton Stakes[edit]

Hi, I've noticed that you're one of WP's foremost contributors to Australian thoroughbred racing, so I thought I might ask you directly (since I'm not sure if a question on the article's talk page would have gained any attention). The article on the Chipping Norton Stakes makes no mention of this, but if I remember correctly the race was run at Caulfield at least once in the 1990s. Could you tell me why and how long that went? Malc82 00:13, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the quick response. Only in case you’re interested, I think I know what the problem was. What I remembered was a February 1997 (British) Racing Post (that I don’t have anymore), where the Chipping Norton result must have been printed under the header “Caulfield”, along with the Blue Diamond result from the same day. But according to various sources I just found on the net, the 1997 Chipping were indeed run at WF, the Racing Post obviously just printed it wrong. The unusual Sydney to Melbourne shift was exactly what got me wondering. Thanks again. Malc82 12:44, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quarter horse racehorses[edit]

Hey, thanks for catching some of those Quarter horses as racehorses, but not ALL of them are racehorses. Some are halter or western pleasure or cutting horses, so I'm going to go through and remove the category on the ones that aren't racehorses. Thanks! Ealdgyth | Talk 02:04, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On the categories, I can defintely see the point and need to prune down Category:Famous horses. I agree, Category:Quarterhorse racehorses doesn't fit all the QH's, but I'm thinking of doing pages on the significant Paint Horses too, so maybe we should stick with something like Category:Cutting horses Category:Rodeo horses Category:Show horses? That way famous Arabian show horses could go in the show horse category also, etc. etc. The only problem I see is we still have a few that won't fit into those categories, maybe need a Category:Broodmares and Category:Stallions to cover those who made their name in the breeding shed instead of outside it. Of course that still leaves a few like Traveller, who was General Robert E. Lee's mount in the American Civil War, or Buchephalus. I'll admit I'm still learning how to work Wikipedia, so I haven't felt able to tackle the lack of suitable categories for the QH articles I'm working on. And for that matter, shouldn't it be Category:Quarter horse racehorses? No clue how to change that! And wow, hitting preview shows me that there IS a category for show horses... (slaps forehead)! Breeding suffix[edit]

I changed Makybe Diva to the format that has been in use since this project was started. And, after hundreds of horses have had articles created based on that presentation, it is unacceptable for anyone to come along and just change one or two to some new formula they suddenly like. If such change is made, then someone else will justifiably change some other part of the article and we wind up with a mess. There is a reason for uniformity. And, every article has the birth country referenced at least twice: on the introductory birth line if alive, in the racebox and the Category. Handicapper (talk) Handicapper (talk) 14:54, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Can someone just see if this is a spillover from that AUS vs NZ spat that is hitting several of the TB articles? There are a couple of editors (Not CG) who are sort of stirring this up and that needs to be cooled off first, IMHO (wanting to stay out of it, but starting to be annoyed by the whole thing...sigh). List of Melbourne Cup winners[edit]

I see you added links to a number of the winners names in this edit. This is a major deviation of the established format and should only be done by Wikipedia:Consensus. Unless persuaded otherwise, I would object to it for several reasons: I think they are misplaced, such a link should be in the article on that year's race and/or the horse article, not on the list of winners. Such links are, and can only be due to the lack of sufficient reference info available from years past, limited to a handful of recent winners on a list of dozens/hundreds. They are god-awful unsightly and degrade the quality presentations thousands of Wikipedia contributors have worked hard to achieve throughout this site. Thanx. Not only is this a totally relevant link, a lot of the information from this page is taken from the website. The site has been online for 11 years - far longer than Wikipedia!

As the webmaster of the above site, and regular contributor to this page I feel the least you could do is leave this site listed. It is supported by advertising but is not an 'advertising site'.

Thanks.

Thank you for your message. Wikipedia has many policies and guidelines which you should familiarise yourself with. WP:LINKSPAM - "adding external links to an article or user page for the purpose of promoting a website or a product is not allowed, and is considered to be spam." WP:EL#ADV - advertising and conflicts of interest - "you should avoid linking to a site that you own, maintain, or represent." I hope this explains why links to your web sites get deleted. Cuddy Wifter (talk) 23:27, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I was just wondering - are you sure Preston is a high importance (priority is used by WP:ACTOR) article for your project? [1] She's not considered a high priority actor at all, so I'm wondering about that rating. No problems either way, just curious. Wildhartlivie (talk) 06:59, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You certainly put a lot more logic into your assessment than most do. I wouldn't change your rating, I was just wondering about it. I have put our WP:ACTOR project request in to get popular page listings, it should be interesting to see what comes up. The actor project bases its assessments on priority a bit differently, I think, but no one method is right or wrong. I just wondered. And I'm a little surprised Preston gets that much traffic in comparison to your other articles. Cheers! Wildhartlivie (talk) 08:13, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

G'day what you mean by reference spam? Aaroncrick (talk) 22:22, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have a problem with reverting the edit on B-class articles but many articles barely have any refs. It would have been better to add an in-line ref but we do use External Links don't we? Also I don't see why you'd think I was promoting the book. You were a long way off the mark there. Like the majority of cricket article use Cricinfo as a source and that doesn't mean the editor was 'spamming' or 'promoting' the website. Thankyou. Australian Baseball[edit]

I noticed you updated the talk page assessment of Australian Baseball League - probably fair enough too. I was wondering if you'd like to have a newsletter delivered to your talk page about the goings-on of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Baseball/Australian baseball task force. I took the liberty of checking out your user page, so I understand if baseball's not top of your interest or priority lists, and also make this offer with no expectation - hope, yes; expectation, no - of participation or contributions to either the task force itself or the articles that fall under its view. At the moment, the next issue will probably be put out in September or November. Whatever you decide, feel free to reply either here or on my own talk page. reassessing importance of articles[edit]

Hi there. I noticed you reassigned importance levels at some articles recently. Your edit summary indicates the reason was that they should be assigned "low" because they aren't in the 5000 most popular articles. Level of hits / visits / popularity isn't really a relevant criterion.

Here is the assessment advice from Wikiproject Biography:
Priority must be regarded as a relative term. If priority values are applied within this project, these only reflect the perceived importance to this project and to the work groups the biography falls under. An article judged to be "Top-Class" in one context may be only "Mid-Class" in another project. The criteria used for rating article priority are not meant to be an absolute or canonical view of how significant the topic is. Rather, they attempt to gauge the probability of the average reader of Wikipedia needing to look up the topic (and thus the immediate need to have a suitably well-written article on it).

Article importance grading scheme
Label Criteria Examples
Top High probability that non-Historians would look this up. Limited to the top 200 biographies. Must have had a large impact outside of their main discipline, across several generations, and in the majority of the world. For instance, Einstein, brilliant physicist, but his theories have affected people outside of physics and in many other countries besides his nation of origin and several generations. His ideas have changed the way people think. No member should give this rating to any biography without first getting Project approval from the other members. Albert Einstein
High Must have had a large impact in their main discipline, across a couple of generations. Had some impact outside their country of origin. Patrick Henry
Mid Important in their discipline. John Seigenthaler, Sr.
Low Subject is notable in their main discipline. Morena Baccarin

Applying this approach to Emily Kngwarreye, we can see she has multiple books about her work alone, and that she is "one of the most prominent and successful artists in the history of the Aboriginal art movement" (which in my view is an understatement, but you can't know that, you can only work with what the article gives you), I would suggest that a mid rating would be best. A case could be made for a high rating, in that she has had her work exhibited outside Australia in a major solo exhibition, but that would probably be a stretch. Hope this helps. Regards, hamiltonstone (talk) 02:17, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Can I support Hamiltonstone's comments above. Popularity is not a criterion used for establishing importance. The articles that you are re-assessing have already been assessed and thus I'm not sure the work you are doing is particularly valuable compared to what yet needs to be done to the many Australian articles still needing improving. Cheers Gillyweed (talk) 03:57, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree with the others above and have gone and reverted all of these new importance gradings, please don't rate importance using that criteria.--VirtualSteve need admin support? 08:19, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion declined: Kalgoorlie Kid[edit]

Hello Cuddy Wifter, and thanks for your work patrolling new changes. I am just informing you that I declined the speedy deletion of Kalgoorlie Kid - a page you tagged - because: A7: "winning the 2007 Cairns Cup" seems to be an assertion of importance. Please review the criteria for speedy deletion before tagging further pages. If you have any questions or problems, please let me know. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 04:52, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Trivia" (Notable people)[edit]

There was no clear consensus to revert my edits. Devonport and Burnie possibly but not for Launceston. You said: "If you do not have a good reason for deletion I suggest you do not impose your view on the work of other editors." Well, I significantly expanded them, so not exactly imposing my view on "the work of other editors." As other editors pointed out there at least needs to be a source per WP:V/WP:OR, which there is not. Aaroncrick (talk) Review me! 09:12, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

Hello Cuddy Wifter! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to insure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. if you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 942 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Diane Anderson[edit]

Why has the material about her been removed? She has been featured on the front page of the Melbourne Age in a story by Paul Austin about an ALP conference. John Brumby at an ALP Conference once told her the ALP would be better off if she left it. Another former Premier said she should go back to America and stay there. She hasn't lived in Australia for some years now. There is a reference to her expulsion from the Melbourne Unitarian Church in the Sunday Age by Lawrence Money. There is, admitedly, some concern about her address but it is on the electoral roll in Glen Iris. Do you know something about her or do you think she's unimportant? Crikey has had some good articles about her over the years. She is currently in the United States and is party to a law suit. There is plenty about it on the net but blp policy probably means that is best avoided. I won't put it back on under Glen Iris. It may be better if she's included in some other article on WP, and I haven't the energy to write one at the moment. I'd just be interested to know your reason for deletion. Bagdadjenny (talk) 23:22, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The section Notable citizens is an area to link with biographies of notable people with a connection to a suburb or town. Wikipedia has guidelines as to notability. I could not find a WP article on Diane Anderson and so deleted your edit. I do not have an opinion as to her importance. If you think she is notable, and you do start a biography please re-insert the link. Cuddy Wifter (talk) 03:15, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your explanation. A lot could be written about her but it needs quality references to meet wp standards. The Age would be a starting point. I'll wait until someone writes an article about her in some academic journal and use that as a starting point, as I just haven't got the time to do original research, which in any case is against wp guidelines. Thank you again. Bagdadjenny (talk) 07:19, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I notice that you have just rated one of Australia's foremost 19th century architects, whose influence extended well into the 20th century as being of "low" importance. (a university, three cathedrals, about 100 churches, houses, mansions, banks, bridges etc.) Do you want to rethink that, on the grounds that he was one of the greatest and most prolific Gothic revival architects in the world? Amandajm (talk) 08:29, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The table of Australia articles by quality and importance shows that of some 49,000 Australia related articles 90% are rated as Low importance, 8% as Mid importance, 1% as High importance and 0.2% as Top importance. A note under Importance_scale states: importance.....attempts to gauge the probability of the average reader of Wikipedia needing to look up the topic. My assessment of the Edmund Blacket article (an average 300 - 500 page views per month), was that it did not fall into the top 10% of Australian articles and I therefore rated it as Low importance. Cuddy Wifter (talk) 22:22, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The number of times that an article is looked up is not a good guage to the real importance of an article. Among the things that are rated higher than Australia's most significant architect of the Victorian period are almost every rock band Australia has ever produced, several game shows, department stores, individual railway stations, individual battles in WWI (as against major campaigns), specific seasons of the Ashes (as against the Ashes) etc etc etc. When I looked up the articles regarded as of "top" importance, what do I find in pride of place? AC/DC, Mate! Wot else! Does this really make Acka Dacka essential to an encyclopedia of Australia? Does it really make a pop band more significant than Edmund Barton or Joan Sutherland or Henry Lawson or Australian Constitutional Law?
Can I suggest that the way that these articles are ordered appears to reflect the ignorance and insularity for which Australians are renowned? Let's have a bit of a reality check here!

Links from Local Government Articles[edit]

Hi, With regard to the links I have been adding to some of the Articles about Australian LGAs. I thought that the Local Government & Municipal Knowledge Base pages might have had enough addition material (Information about Software Systems used by the Councils for example) to warrant the link. I guess the amount of additional information varies from page to page, but I be interested to get your opinion about some of the more mature pages - the Bundaberg Regional Council page for example - to see if you think a link to that page might be appropriate.

http://www.lgam.info/bundaberg-regional-council

I believe there are a few things that are included in the LGAM Knowledge Base pages that are of definite interest to people in the Local Government arena, that are not appropriate to add to the Wikipedia articles.

Darkenfair (talk) 03:05, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Bundaberg link is no different to all the other links you have added. It seems to me that you are adding multiple links to Wikipedia articles for the purpose of promoting a website. This is considered to be External link spamming and is not allowed. Cuddy Wifter (talk) 23:09, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thoroughbred assessment[edit]

Good morning! Over here in England it's now 23:19 and almost bedtime. I see you've just started on assessing the horses for importance; noticing that you've reassessed some as |class=start, I thought I'd explain why I originally marked these as |class=stub - quite simply, there is a stub template at the bottom of the article page. If the article is Start-class, perhaps the stub templates should go?

Separate question. There are five British Classic Races; Verkhovensky assessed Talk:Epsom Derby as |importance=top; using that as precedent, I then assessed all four of the others to the same importance. You've since reassessed two (Talk:2,000 Guineas Stakes, Talk:1,000 Guineas Stakes) as |importance=high. Should the other three (Epsom Derby, Talk:Epsom Oaks and Talk:St. Leger Stakes) also be reduced to High? Personally, I think that all five should be of the same importance. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:37, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Almost midnight and you are still doing Wiki- work. This is dedication beyond the norm...I usually knock off by 6pm. I will try to remember to delete the stub template when I rate an article as Start class in future. Thanks for the note. So far as the top races in each country are concerned (including British Classic Races), I do not consider them as core thoroughbred racing topics which would be rated are Top importance, but as historically significant, which is High importance. Thanks for your help in the assessments. Regards, Cuddy Wifter (talk) 06:22, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Morning, Cuddy. As you may have noticed, I've now completed my pass through Category:Racehorse stubs, and have now turned to Category:United States horse racing biography stubs. Some of these people specialise in training Thoroughbreds for racing, so they're easy to decide that {{WikiProject Thoroughbred racing}} is suitable; but some are much more difficult, and when in doubt, I may have put {{WikiProject Equine}} on instead. To my mind, they should have one or the other of these two WikiProjects; so if you think I used the wrong one, then by all means exchange. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:00, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Seaton Carew war memorial[edit]

Thank you for an excellent article on Seaton Carew which I could never have prepared myself. I am very disappointed however to note your removal of material added earlier today, 9 August 2010, by myself. That I concede is to a large extent your prerogrative, given that you and not myself will always, I imagine, be identified as the person principally responsible for the content of this particular article on this particular town, and its excellence in design. Nonetheless, I draw your attention first of all to the fact that it is indeed perhaps astonishing that you did not choose yourself in the first instance to make any reference whatsoever to this particular war memorial on Green Square, and secondly to the fact that whether it is relevant or not to Seaton Carew is a debatable question, for the simple reason that those who live in the town, and those who visit it, should I suggest be aware of the difficulties that arise in connection with a war memorial which I suggest is in its own fashion entirely unique as being based upon the supreme war medal in the history of Great Britain, and incidentally and therefore unsurprisingly relating both to war memorials elsewhere and to the tomb of the British Unknown Warrior, as seems to be the case on the basis of the other websites to which reference is made.

I believe it is in the interests of Wikipedia as an encyclopedia that facts in this connection, which you do not deny as such, that is as facts, should be known, and I therefore restore my own contribution. If you remove it again, I shall not proceed any further in this matter within Wikipedia, but I must inform you that the text of the present comment on your own action will be added by myself, together with the text you have removed, on the 'Discussions' page of this particular article.

Best wishes and regards, and I hope that, in what I myself believe is the public interest viewed in historical terms as distinct from the positions at present taken up by the Secretary of State in central government and certain local authorities, we can arrive at some sort of agreement, possibly by discussion on this page, before you choose to undo my own undoing, and consequently to remove this text again.

Hello, by the looks of things, you do not live in Hartlepool despite perhaps having come from the area originaly. Being 61 years old would mean that you were probably born when Hartlepool was still part of County Durham. I however, like all people under 45 was born in County Cleveland. From then on this meant Durham was no longer the county of Hartlepool, and Stockton. Although the Cleveland county was disbanded in the late 90s, the term is still used, and spoken. In addition the new name for the area is the Tees Valley. If you could to refer to Hartlepool in the ceremonial county of Durham, what on earth is it supposed to mean? Ceremonial county? What is that? Under this assumption Redcar is part also of the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, yet is not part of Yorkshire and Humberside but is still part of the North East. Can you understand the confusion this is causing? To resolve this confusion and to continue the Tees idenity, Tees Valley was introduced, a new region formed from the old county Cleveland with the addition of Darlington. As a result Hartlepool in now in the TEES VALLEY and by saving county Durham you are basically confusing generations of people even more with this old term. In Hartlepool, I send a letter with a TS postcode. I receive a letter with a TEESSIDE Date stamp, I receive a bank statement with a HARTLEPOOL, CLEVELAND address, I listen to TFM (Teesside radio), I look for things on the visit TEES VALLEY website, I look for a jobs on Teesvalleyjobs.co.uk, I rent a house with the TEES VALLEY Housing associatiom, I find bus and train information on the Connect TEES VALLEY transport website, and births, deaths, and marriages are at the TEES VALLEY indexes in Middlesbrough. So I hope you understand what the issue is about, either write Tees Valley or don't write anything at all.

Externally linking to bus schedules/tables via template[edit]

I posted on the article talk pages; please reply there or at the template talk page rather than reverting me again. There is no justification for linking externally via a template to the bus schedules/tables within an article about a suburb. When the bus agency changes their schedules/tables, they change the link, and these then appear as external broken links in wikipedia articles.

The entire template is nonsense; it consists of 3-4 375 label-switches, to post external links to bus schedules/tables on a web site. There is no sense in wikipedia that every article on every place on the planet with bus transportation should include direct external links to the bus schedules/tables. Let's see, the article on London should contain a list of all buses, trains, and planes, with their times of operations, destinations, and external links to individual bus schedules? It's not appropriate for an encyclopedia. Maybe a tour guide. --Kleopatra (talk) 17:25, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reassessment -[edit]

Hello Cuddy Wifter :) I have noticed that you assessed Westfield Southland shopping centre of it's importance on the 9th of August 2008. I have requested on the Wiki Projects Melbourne that the shopping centre be reassessed from low importance to Mid, but I haven't been replied back to. I know I should be more patient, but I just thought that since you were the person who assessed it the first time, would it be possible the article be reassessed to a Mid Importance? The article has changed dramatically since August 2008, And this centre is important because:

  • It ranks in the top 10 largest shopping centres in Australia (by stores and floor area)
  • Southland has the Southern Hemisphers largest and longest multi-level retail bridge
  • A Premium Railway Station has been approved for the centre
  • The centre serves up to 16.5 million people annually
  • Its a Principal Activity Centre (Melbourne 2030 Metropolitan Strategy)

It's Victorian sister shopping centres Westfield Doncaster and Westfield Fountain Gate both have recieved Mid Importance.

Please get back to me asap! :) If there is anything you would like to discuss, please discuss on my talk page :) Thankyou! :) MelbourneStar1 (talk) 10:11, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Inconsistency of Policy Enactment: Conflict of Interest, Spam, and Restrcited Sites.[edit]

Hi Cuddy,

Thanks for the links to the various policies. I have taken them into consideration.

Previously my community site links were classified it as spam or a "restricted membership" site, neither of which they are, as they are open and free. Meanwhile, many links to purely commercial sites remain, such as Sun Theatre (Yarraville), Luna Park, St Kilda Marina, Linden Art Gallery (St Kilda), and other community sites such as WilliamstownOnline (on the Williamstown, Vic page). The policy regarding External Links does not seem to be enacted with any consistency.

If the Wikipedia community has some method of reaching a consensus on this point I will find it easier to understand and therefore be able abide by it.

Regards,

Nic Mason

The guidelines at WP:SPAM ARE the Wikipedia consensus and you have to abide by them:
Quote1. Adding external links to an article or user page for the purpose of promoting a website or a product is not allowed, and is considered to be spam
Quote2. How not to be a spammer:.Review your intentions. Wikipedia is not a space for personal promotion or the promotion of products, services, web sites
This is what you attempted to do. You have made no other contribution to Wikipedia apart from linking to your websites. In addition there is nothing on your websites which adds to the existing articles.
Quote3. Many times users can be confused by the removal of spam links because other links that could be construed as spam have been added to the article and not yet removed. The inclusion of a spam link should not be construed as an endorsement of the spam link, nor should it be taken as a reason or excuse to include another.
There are millions of articles on Wikipedia. Not every article is on someone's watchlist, therefore some spamlinks will avoid detection.
I hope this helps to explain why your websites were deleted. Regards. Cuddy Wifter (talk) 00:42, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have, unfortunately, got a lot of time on my hands at the moment and would like to contribute as much as possible, but only if I'm going about it in the right way. Hey Cuddy. I need to create a sweep sheet for the Melb cup (and have it ready for use Sunday morning). I guess the final field is named after the McKinnon and Lexus are completed. But where does one go to find the official list of runners? Moriori (talk) 21:04, 11 October 2011 (UTC) Belay that. Have located a site which will have the starting 24 late Saturday afternoon. West Hartlepool - Revision of article references on 30 October 2011[edit]

Thank you for confirming that an extremely useful website so far as maps are concerned as indicated in the subject line is still available. I can howeve assure you that when I tried to access it a few hours before your replacement or restitution of it as shown above (which you did yesterday 30 October) this website did not seem, for whatever reason, to be on line, and I can assure you that I tried a few hours earlier to reach it several times without any success whatsoever.

This (its subsequent availability) is a sort of experience I have never had before over a period of many years attempts to reach websites and if you are prepared to believe I am telling you the truth it will be helpful if you provide me with some sort of explanation, assuming that such is also available, since what I did as a result of this situation was indeed arguably a very serious error; however, the maps as quoted by myself as an alternative (Alan Godfrey Maps), if they are duly obtained by those interested in the true character of the extraordinary history and architecture of this extraordinary Victorian new town as bombarded by the Germans in the East Coast Raid in 1914 together with historic Hartlepool, are I can assure you Sir considerably more informative as to the history of this Victorian new town, West Hartlepool, together with its relationship to the architecture and mapping of the 19th Century, and I suggest that it should now again be included within this reference, even if only briefly.

Unless you respond with some reason why it should not be, I shall therefore take this step I hope with your approval, given the extremely significant national issues that are quite clearly at the present time involved in relation to war memorials of the First World War (you will perhaps be aware of the admittedly 'stub' class West Hartlepool War Memorial article?).

The ultimate alternative is perhaps the removal of war memorials altogether as completely irrelevant other than as lists of names, which no longer mean anything? You may also wish to see the latest edition to the Talk Page, relating the matter to Buckingham Palace.

Thanks for adding the banner to all those Hong Kong racing articles. The creator of the articles obviously meant well, but hadn't checked to see how we actually do these things. Not sure if all of them would pass a strict notability check, but we need to encourage new editors. Talkback[edit]

Hello, Cuddy Wifter. You have new messages at Faizanalivarya's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

User:Faizanalivarya[edit]

The article history (Link) shows that Faizanalivarya did indeed create the Stephen Sauvestre article on 10 December 2012. My guess is that the traffic statistics could include page visits before the article was actually created (for example, via red link), but I think this is a question you should direct to User:Henrik (as per this link). However, the statistics page is a tool that exists outside of Wikipedia, while article history is an integral part of the project and we could safely consider it to be the official record. Thus I believe the onus is on you to explain how Faizanalivarya did not create the article. Same goes for Preston, Tasmania. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 22:35, 13 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Please review WP:REMOVED regarding the user talk page comment you restored. Thanks, -- Gyrofrog (talk) 22:37, 13 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Gyrofrog,
My honest apologies for removing, all conversation has been restored on my Talk Page, Thanks a lot for supporting that's highly appreciated with all due respect of Mr. Wifter, I would like to inform him, that I did create those articles. He might be confusing with some other articles or may be some deleted articles, kindly keep in touch until we resolve this issue. Thanks again for your kind concern.-- Faizan Munawar Varya chat contributions 07:07, 14 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's entirely feasible that there were page visits prior to the article's creation. I don't know about several hundred, but again, I think that's a question for User:Henrik. I am more inclined to trust the article history. As for the other issues, I think competency may be an issue (as opposed to outright malice, subterfuge etc.) -- Gyrofrog (talk) 22:24, 18 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hand-coding[edit]

Hey all :).

I'm dropping you a note because you've been involved in dealing with feedback from the Article Feedback Tool. To get a better handle on the overall quality of comments now that the tool has become a more established part of the reader experience, we're undertaking a round of hand coding - basically, taking a sample of feedback and marking each piece as inappropriate, helpful, so on - and would like anyone interested in improving the tool to participate :).

You can code as many or as few pieces of feedback as you want: this page should explain how to use the system, and there is a demo here. Once you're comfortable with the task, just drop me an email at okeyes@wikimedia.org and I'll set you up with an account :).

If you'd like to chat with us about the research, or want live tutoring on the software, there will be an office hours session on Monday 17 December at 23:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office connect. Hope to see some of you there! Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 23:21, 14 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Melburnian candles[edit]

The Melburnian candles

Hi Cuddy Wifter. I want to comment on your picture of the molten candles in Melbourne in the heat wave of 2009. Were those candles left next to a closed window with the sun directed at them? If so, then that was not the effect of the heat wave alone, it is rather the greenhouse effect, because in Egypt we experience similar heatwaves for much longer periods of time and even in some places that is the normal mid-summer weather, but we never experience molten candles. I believe this is quite exaggerating to have that picture in the article, Extreme weather events in Melbourne, don't you think so? --Mahmudmasri (talk) 10:43, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There's some uninformed speculation online that Mr Cruel kidnapped, raped and killed Kylie and i don't want that to infect Kylie's article. Hi,

Just check your explanation, and the picture is the same size and in the same place than the race court panoramic picture.

Also, the link is there, because as you said, the picture is taken from that William Hill page (with permission)

Instead of arguing about interests (that is 100% an assumption of yours) please give me facts if the picture and the text are not good quality or not belongs to the Melbourne Cup entrance.

Please, before erasing again, talk with me, is more civilized than erasing over and over.

You will find examples of completed race records on 'racehorsetalk.com.au' under eg 'Race Records of International Champions'. If you are unfamiliar with the website note the website is not sponsored and information can be be viewed without registration. I have no connection with the website owners and have never met them. I have negligible computer and literary skills and have no time to learn so I really do not want to be an active wikipedia writer. If you are interested in this sort of information I can provide similar with detailed cross referencing /citations. I can drip feed information to you or anyone you nominate. All the information will be in xl format. I have selected you as a contact because we both live in Melbourne.

PS I know nothing about horse racing I just like watching. Tom (USA) Rolfe (talk) 09:49, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
