IDF pamphlets at 2018 Gaza border protests

Hi, I restored the images of the IDF pamphlets that you removed. I believe they should remain, I do understand that this is an English encyclopaedia, but the pamphlets were distributed into Gaza which means they were only printed in Arabic, translations of the pamphlets are made in the image description, Wikipedia is not censored and it shows the actual pamphlets which were distributed by the IDF into Gaza. I also understand that the pictures might be one-sided in the sense that they show the IDF doing something for the Gazans, but that is not the case here; I search far and wide daily for images for the article, unfortunately very little, to no, images are available showing the "Palestinian side". The only images in public domain are of the protestors and the damage. I have spoken about this numerous times on the talk page. Waddie96 (talk) 19:34, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

@Waddie96: Yes I know they're in Arabic. I just don't think a block of solid Arabic text helps readers of the English-language Wikipedia, especially if it's a one-sided propaganda leaflet. The selection of images based on how useful they are to readers has nothing to do with censorship, and it's also policy that articles are written in English. However I'm not sufficiently bothered to revert or get into an argument, I was just working to have the article posted on ITN. Modest Genius talk 10:40, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

Hayabusa2

Hi, Modest Genius, I would like to clarify the reason I changed the variety of English that you used. As the article in question, Hayabusa2 is primarily concerned with Japan, I judge it is reasonable to use the prevalent spelling of English words used for that country. To site WP:ENGVAR :

 * When more than one variant spelling exists within a national variety of English, the most commonly used current variant should usually be preferred, except where the less common spelling has a specific usage in a specialized context e.g. connexion in Methodist connexionalism.

Following this rule, the commonly used spelling variant in the country/organization in question is used for Space Exploration related articles in Wikipedia (i.e. Apollo program and Aurora programme). JAXA, the agency managing the Hayabusa2 mission uses the American spelling; the following pages are examples.

To follow the style used in other articles, the most common English variant used world wide to refer to the subject should be employed. I can always be wrong, so please feel free to correct me at any time. Kind regards, Hms1103 (talk) 15:36, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

Fair enough. I was following the 'retain existing variety' rule and was not aware that JAXA uses AmE for this mission (though a quick google shows they've used plenty of BrE in the past). I'm not sure that really counts as a 'strong national tie', but won't object to switching to AmE. Modest Genius talk 15:43, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. Sorry for taking your time. Regards, Hms1103 (talk) 16:02, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

Need help undoing an edit I made

Hi! I made an edit on this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naming_of_comets I'm an idiot and shouldn't have tried to edit something that is obviously beyond me. I tried to undo it and I think I made it worse. Sorry about that, and thanks for all the edits you've done...I learned a lot on that page!

Also, I put the squiggles here (I'm not sure where they go). I'm going to go off and learn how to actually use wikipedia before I mess anything else up 😅 Labofoz (talk) 01:02, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

No problem, it's easy to fix. I've switched the article back to the version before your edits. The situation with A/ is complicated because those objects have all been reclassified (some more than once). I'm not sure the current version of Naming of comets is strictly correct due to those reclassifications, but haven't tracked down the latest IAU guidance. Thanks. The new material you've added does demonstrate coverage in multiple third-party reliable sources, so I've removed the tag. Modest Genius talk 17:59, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
Cheers for that. I was pretty sure that article could be salvaged with a few more refs. Hughesdarren (talk) 04:17, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

Reversion

I saw you reverted my edit to Chapman Medal. Since the edit was clearly not vandalism, it would have been more polite to have used "undo". The error arose from the article being included in Category:Astronomy prizes. Thanks, Aymatth2 (talk) 15:34, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

Um, I did use the 'undo' link, and never suggested it was vandalism. Modest Genius talk 15:41, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
That is odd. What I saw is to the right. Must be that "undo" generates a "reverted" message. It seems a bit abrupt. Anyway, "investigations of outstanding merit in the science of the Sun, space and planetary environments or solar-terrestrial physics" sounds a bit like astronomy to a layman, and the award has been categorized that way for many years. Aymatth2 (talk) 17:04, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

MP name

In a reply on ERRORS, you said that the article is The Barber of Seville. True, and for some, that may still be the common name. Only, our sentence on the MP mentions the world premiere, which was not given in English. Move request? I suffered enough already, Der fliegende Holländer, when a late comment was that even the Grove has that now, - "now" being 2013. As in my comment in the morning: the featured article Rossini does not proclaim that he composed "The Barber", nor has featured article Richard Wagner nonsense such as: Wagner composed The Flying Dutchman. Why don't we educate Main page readers a bit? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:32, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

The best place to discuss these issues is on the article talk page. If there is consensus there, then the Main Page can reflect it. WP:ERRORS is not the place to find subject matter experts. Modest Genius talk 12:18, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

Hey

It's very kind of you to ask, thanks. I am even busier now than I was four years ago, so don't have any desire to take on additional responsibility. I'm more interested in the Main page editor proposal, which would cover everything I might use the admin tools for, though discussion on that seems to have rather petered out. Modest Genius talk 14:19, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
In seven days you could have those tools that would be useful to you (and simply ignore all the other tools which you have no use for) ... Individual state powers interest general American public, studies suggest

Obviously, dead is dead. Though crediting/blaming the US for executions carried out by Texas (and other states) is wrong on levels one needn't be a scholar to appreciate. We've probably both seen the scene in movies and TV where a death row inmate waits for or mentions a last-minute phone call from the governor. Whether it comes or not, the point is clear: The governor has the power, over the warden, over the executioner and certainly over the inmate.

But in a federal case, there is no governor. And for the first time ever, the part of the governor was played by a WWE Superstar, rather than a "legit" Republican president. It's pretty weird, having Trump give the big thumbs down to a neo-Nazi, of all people! But not blurbworthy, no complaints on your vote. Just saying your last sentence about who's been executing those dirty dozens you recall might warrant a second thought. If not, cheers! InedibleHulk (talk) 17:34, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

I don't understand most of that, or know what film you're referring to, but I think you're agreeing with my oppose !vote at ITN/C? If so, OK then. Modest Genius talk 10:30, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
There's the United States, then there are the U.S. states. All are their own little worlds, with their own courts, constitutions and citizens. When you claim "the U.S." is executing dozens of prisoners each year, you're saying (probably unintentionally) that the people in charge of federal justice are the common killers, which they aren't. It's usually Texas, but always an entirely distinct sovereign state from "the States" (by any name), in a mundane civic way and an arcane legal one. Didn't have one show in mind, just the whole tired device. TVTropes calls it "The Last-Minute Reprieve", has plenty of non-governor examples, too, if kings are more your thing. Google if curious, but it's not as important as remembering that America is 51 places (not counting the complicated parts), and most have nothing to do with this case, or the president or Hollywood. noncommercial licenses

Licensing only for noncommercial use sounds good in theory, but unfortunately ends up becoming a rather severe restriction based on how the modern internet works. For example, if you take a photo with your telescope, and want people to be able to reuse the photo only for noncommercial use, technically this means that they can't share that photo on social media, and even search engines like Google or Bing should not show the photo in image searches. Even if they just wanted to print out a copy of the photo to hang on their wall at home for personal admiration, but didn't have a photo printer, the print shop would earn a profit from printing the free work, and so that would also technically be a violation of the noncommercial license. I would recommend reading the article "The Case for Free Use: Reasons Not to Use a Creative Commons -NC License" for a better explanation for how troublesome and difficult noncommercial licenses can be. freedomdefined.org appears to be temporarily down right now, but I have a CC BY-SA copy on my website (page 13). Nicole Sharp (talk) 21:28, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

I read the link, but still disagree. Difficulty in enforcement applies to both the NC and SA parts. If Wikipedia had used an NC licence from the start, or one which restricted reuse to just Wikimedia projects, it would not have damaged the quality or reliability of the encyclopaedia. It would have prevented unscrupulous companies printing hundreds of pages from it and selling them for profit on Amazon, misleadingly labelled as new textbooks. It would have prevented Google from putting Wikipedia content on their own webpage so they can sell advertising alongside it. It would have prevented the ridiculous misrepresentation of copied material by astrology or anti-vaccination accounts on social media. It would have prevented images being reused in commercial advertising or publications without attribution or compensation. If the goal was to have the content reused as widely as possible, I agree that a fully copyleft licence is superior, but I don't see that as the primary goal of Wikipedia. I contribute here because I want to help build a high-quality encyclopaedia which anyone can read, not so for-profit companies can make money off volunteer effort. Modest Genius talk 12:46, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
PS. FWIW, I don't think your printing example would constitute commercial use, as the usage is by the customer, not the company. But that's rather moot. Modest Genius talk 12:46, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
