Latest Events-(2011 to DEC-2013, (('12)summer/winter/spring'13 of GRAND CANYON-Geology, etc.))[edit]

{Latest Notes/Additions)-I will enter a "BLURB"-here, to be updated in days/weeks ahead: NOT--SEND more FOOD (to me or the World (or the new moon rover))-(I have to choose/FIND my food)

The BLURB's intentions will be to state my opinion, (my take on "it"/things), to all who want to live in "Real-Ville" (as opposed to Rio Linda). (on-ward fellow Homo sapiens sapiens (if 'you' (or the parts of "you" are listening). [these are juxtaposed against the 99 percent plus of [the Homo.sapiens), the H. sapiens religiosum-s (the "true-believers" (religions/philisophies/beliefs/predilections/(including wikipe.)/(politico's/syncoFants, RockStars/Starettes, included))]
I left the "religion-game" when I found that the bottom of the list of religions (or TOP) contained 'agnostic', 'atheist', (and for wikipedia: "ir-religion", and "non-religion")-Note: at the 1350's BC Amarna letters, nothing existed AFTER 1350-1334 BC (we know what transpired; THEY lived in (their) REAL-VILLE)

(end of Note)..Mmcannis (talk) 13:02, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Letters done: EA 9, 19, 252, (273), 282, 365 Letters to do: EA 26, 28, 30, 35, 39, 147, 245, ----286,287,289,290, EA 325, etc.

Philately[edit]

  • (for-Jan 15,2011)-Category:Wikipedians interested in philately--(I need to enter this category, in time). (my personal favorite stamp I have is on a page of two stamps in the (Canton (country subdivision)-Cantons of Switzerland),.. cantons of Switzerland-(1843, not reprint of 1848,(no burellage)), a Numeral 6 (Black) with Red burellage, (either Horiz or Vert- mine is Horiz)))
    • (Corrected description)-Jan 16,2011-From 1989, Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalog, Vol 4. Stamps of Switzerland begin in 1850 ( "Federal Administration" ). The ( "Cantonal Administration" ) begins 1843(Zurich, Geneva). Three cantons represented: Cantons of Switzerland1—Canton of Zurich, 2—Canton of Geneva, and 3—'Canton of Basel'.
Denomination: 100 Rappen(or Centimes) = 1 Franc. For Zurich, 3 types of stamps, (A1, A2, A3); A1, A2 are in the first series. A1,A2 (1843) is vertical RED burelage; A1,A2 (1846) is horizontal RED burellage (with 5 varieties of burellage).
(Total variety No. is now: 2 + 10)
The NOTE: for A1,A2 is: Reprints of the Zurich stamps show signs of wear and lack the red lines. (That adds +2, and are either from 1843 or '46, and unknown which year). Total No of stamps now 12 + 2 (unlined)(=no burelage).
Description(for what its worth). The stamps are BLACK, the numerals are 75 per/cent the height of the stamp, (on a matrix background).
A (somewhat) narrow "decorated" border is on the four sides, with the following differences explaining the 4R, and 6R denomination: ZURICH is inscribed in the top border (about Half-); the bottom border is completely (mostly)-85% made of: (for A1, 4R): LOCAL TAXE (for local Zurich), and higher value: (for A2, 6R), CANTONAL TAXE, (out of the city)(my stamp is the 6R,cancelled (lines)(a cancellation)-about 40% of stamp, in SEast quadrant-(lower right))
(Added 2 days later:)
This 6r is apparently the: Zurich 4 and 6, 6r.

Hi[edit]

It is traditional to put a "Welcome to Wikipedia" message here. I won't do that because you have already been here at least three weeks! But welcome anyway.

If you are feeling a little confused at the moment, I have very little sympathy for you: you delayed so long in creating an account and took absolutely no part in the Votes for Deletion process. Now you have an account you can see that it is no big deal is it?

The good news is that nothing of your work has been lost. You will find links to it at the start of this list.

Go ahead, find the articles, do a few edits just to assure yourself that they all right, then stop. You said if you accept the Return of some Pages. The blunt answer is: we do not accept the return of any of your pages. The kindly answer is: Great work, Michael, but please do it elsewhere.

You must now turn your mind to finding a new home for your work. As I said in the talk page, you will probably be best creating your own site. If you go to Wikibooks or Wikisource you will run into the same sort of problems as here - they are colaborative projects so other people will edit your stuff or at least express opinions about it!

Please keep in touch. You can always leave messages for me at User talk:RHaworth and since Tony Sidaway did the job of moving your stuff, he should be willing to talk to you via User talk:Tony Sidaway.

RHaworth 19:40:44, 2005-08-28 (UTC)

Hello, RHaworth. Well, I have been busy at work, so this is my first chance to get back to what i was doing with Wikipedia. Since i Have hard copies of most of what I was working on, I must explain some things.

  • ----First I think the El Amarna letters will go down in history as with other clay tablet, or lignuistic "Sources", as with other major linguistic, // slash antrhropological sources. With the ADVENT of the Internet, these letters are "Destined" to become available to anyone, For so long they have been kept hidden, and I mean that as Point of Fact, .....just like the Dead Sea scrolls, were kept hidden.
  • --- My efforts were partially finalized before I started, but I was able, Or Had To polish some, or come to conclusions.
  • ----I have more conclusions now, say about EA 245, and the story of "The Plight of Yasdata". He may be now "Osiris Yasdata", the body of Dead Souls,.... I have looked at these really clear cuneif. characters, and am still Not Sure, of some things. Shepard is the other word that may apply here. "Shepard,Journeying, Yasdata". I KNOW, that few have really figured it out completely. What is interesting. ... the same "cuneiform" is used two lines later, ... so i think shepard is what applies.
  • ---what is so "kool", is that there are interesting religious implications in these letters. the Amaran Letters, are Pre-Biblical, and they are not "translated" ! ! ! as the bible is. so, as i predict, they will eventually be studied by many, many more people. My talents, are more Earth Sciences, and Paleontology, Puzzles, but also in pictures, like the anthropological Hand-created items. Those are the puzzles i am refferring to. (The picture in a book, LIKE of Mr king Gudea ?)
  • ----I think the future of wikipedia, is endless, ....in summary, ... so I look forward to doing more
  • ---Thanks for being patient. The focus of the last weeks, was the stuff/the body of stuff I did, as well as the presentation available on the Display screen. I was focussed on the accuracy of my work, and 2nd its look in front of me.
  • ----the transliteration Topic is where it is at. When a Human has the transliteration in front of him/her, they than can figure what it means. The Paragraphic Layouts i did, helped me immensely. It was truely Crossword puzzle stuff, trying to fill in words, and sometimes thoughts, in sentences, or parts of sentences. .... The best example of that is in EA 28, taling about the "problem" of the messengers going and returning to eqypt. the scribe uses the word for "hurdle", to address [the "mountain" concerning the problem about the messengers ]... i.e, the mountain, the hurdle. there are such exquistite English words that drop into place, once the story in front of one is Understood.
  • So, I reread, and just proof, read, I look forward to again talking with, you, and Tony,. Thanks again, Mmcannis, in YumaAZ (the desert ! )

Michael, thanks for getting back in touch with us. Our main concern now is that if you have content in the articles currently on Wikipedia, you *must* take the opportunity to download them within the next seven days. We really shall delete them, but we're granting a stay of execution out of consideration for the appreciable amount of work that they must represent. The articles are where RHaworth said they would be, so if there is any content you need please download it immediately. I'll let it hang around for a week, and after that time it'll be gone from Wikipedia. --Tony SidawayTalk 03:51, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't edit those articles. The clock is ticking. They will be completely removed by 8th September. --Tony SidawayTalk 21:59, 3 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RHaworth , this is Mmcannis, here ...Please look at a year 2000 calendar. It was NOT a leap year. 1600 was not, and 2400 will not be a LEAP YEAR. I first read this stupid formaula para ( 2 ) months ago and could hardly get thru the first sentence. I made corrections back then on " 1899" . I read how others had also found the formula so confusing. Any way it is correct at the moment until somebody goes and revises it again. It is not worded trerrilbly well. I was just trying to make it factual. Please check a calendar, etc. Monday noon, Labor day....Mmcannis,YumaAZ

I was working on the Rosetta Stone, and the Grandfather's the Decree of Canopus, which implemented Leap year, 238 B.C.E. The book I was given at the Reference desk by a Librarian, had 1 and a half pages on Leap year. It was implemented by Caesar in 55 B.C.E. in 1592 ( ? ) the reorganezed calendar was done. 10 days came off the calendar. then 1600 was skipped, Only the second 400 year skip occurred in 2000; the next 400 year skip is on Feb 28, 2400, certainly a long way aways....Mmcannis

Rosetta Stone etc.[edit]

Thanks for your comment on the Rosetta Stone. In future, please don't remove other comments from people's talk pages when adding your own. Thanks. It really is a nice picture... there are quite a lot of talented people in the project that contribute. I agree, it would be nice to have more pictures of stuff in the British Museum. The best way to get some is to take some yourself. If you don't get out there too often (quite reasonable since you appear to live in Arizona, not the UK) then you could try asking someone to get what you're looking for. You could always try leaving a note on the image's talk page, contacting the uploader, or maybe having a look around Wikipedia:UK Wikipedians' notice board to see whether there are any willing people around.

P.S. Regarding Leap year, see 2000, 1900, and all of the other years. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, unless it is divisible by 100 but not 400. So, 2000 was a leap year, and 1900, 1800, 1700 aren't. Cheers, JYolkowski // talk 20:56, 5 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I just read up on the Facts of leap year..... with a smug shrug, i have to admit I was sleeping all day on Leap Year Day 2000, and/or I was translating. Oh well, ( I never did understand how the one day skip every 400 years equalled the ten days taken off. I guess I screwed up the formula !). Mmcannis,YumaAZ.... It was obviously 3 days per 400 years !

Good. We have got that 'sorted'! The article Gregorian calendar says it was 1582 only for the Popish heartland of Europe. Some countries did not change until the 20th century. There is a wonderful painting/engraving by William Hogarth (which, strangely, I cannot find on the web) in which someone is waving a placard saying give us back our eleven days. -- RHaworth 17:24:44, 2005-09-06 (UTC)

After: Amarna letters Rosetta Stone THE Epic, My creations[edit]

RHaworth, and others, Thanks for your Patience. My practice of Amarna letters was Really important. Just today, I Now see how these, User, Talk pages work. I just looked at the developer of the LMLK seal page, Mr "Funhistory" 's Talk page, and with the help of many people, I now know how to make and add to " Category: " pages.

So, I am assessing directions to go in. Today I completed (For Now) the "Impression seal" group. I finally opened a Masterful type Book" from Germany(Konemann Publ.) see ref at Scaraboid seal, (subgroup of Impression seal ), 2 editors, and 35 Authors. Quite the pics, etc.

Note on Kushite phar. Piankh 1074-1070 BC[edit]

I asked at the Talk:Lunar eclipse, page, Lunar eclipse if someone could check on the Stela of Piankhi for the lunar eclipse(asked about season of year) mentioned in his Stela Autobiography, of about 40 pages, (Long), It is in the 1907 work by James Henry Breasted who in the 5-Volume( Ancient Records of Egypt ) work redid all the Egyptian translations (How long did that take him?). Any now, thanks fellow citizens (grk, demotoles), guys and gals. (Work, and other business.) Mmcannis,YumaAZ

sandbox[edit]

I distinctly recall you saying that you do not want a user page. I encourage you to create one:

  • it makes you look less like a newbie
  • it is where you can list pages to which you have contributed
  • it discourages people from mis-placing talk messages there

but I won't insist. However I do insist that you should not use your talk page for notes to yourself, etc. Talk pages are for dialogue with other users. You are encouraged to keep private pages for your own jottings - you will now find yours at User:Mmcannis/sandbox - please use it. -- RHaworth 12:41, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I just got home from work, so I'll write a complete note later, after I look at the sandbox ( I see now why the name 'Sandbox' must exist). Thanks again. Mmcannis,YumaAZ--Mmcannis 02:21, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi/Arizona flora[edit]

Hi Michael, Thanks for your comments on my talk page. They were interesting in terms of the plants you've seen recently as well as the info about stuff that can be done with "related changes", "Contrib", etc. I'm learning as I go along. I don't have a lot of time to work on Wikipedia, but my respect for the project has greatly increased as I've looked at it, and I'm hoping to add some middle Tennessee botanical stuff in the near future.

I'm going to southern AZ this July to visit two sisters-in-law and families. They tell me that the drought has pretty much creamed all of the vegetation there. So I don't know what I'll see.

I noticed your cats for trogon. Since not all members of the family occur in Arizona or Mexico, tagging the family rather than individual species is inappropriate, and I'm going to delete them. The logic of tagging families means that groups like Old World warbler could be tagged for US states on the strength of one species, despite the vast majority being Old World. jimfbleak 09:18, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Saguaro ext links[edit]

Hi Michael - I've added a response to your query at Talk:Saguaro - MPF 16:46, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanx. Before I found the NRCS database, I was proceeding more slowly. I had been working on a page for plants in the Sonoran Desert, after I made the Lower Colorado River Valley, category. (originally because of a bird page).... So, I then pulled up my Volume 3, Minor Hardwoods of North America. Only after doing other flora's, in other states, did I finally come up to the Buckthorn's etc. And see the renaming of some of the Genus levels..... Anyhow..I finally looked at the maps (as in the Jepson maps), for the Saguaro: AZ, CA for the USDA data and saw that it was Not updated. The saguaro's go all up the river, both east and west side. In Imperial Co, San Bernardino Co., and Riverside Co. And of course they extend up the "Joshua Tree Parkway" towards Western Mohave County, Arizona, and the Mojave Desert. I'll go look at the Saguaro talk. Thanx again.(PS, as a young teenager(new to Ariz.), I will never forget seeing them at Bagdad, in the foothills, down in the Open Pit Mine, Miles from Nowhere, literally! [I newly lived in Prescott; they are not around Prescott!]) ,,,,,M-McA,inHotYumaAZ--Mmcannis 17:09, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

naturalhistory cats[edit]

Well, I don,t mind going through Category:Natural history of the United States by state to make sure categorization is pertinent (see WP:CG: Articles should not usually be in both a category and its subcategory, for why I've been making many adjustments). While there are sometimes arguments for puttng an article into a cat and its child, I do not believe they apply here. Right now, I'm working on Subdivision footers standardization, but I can go through Natural history of the United States by state onceI'm finished. Circeus 13:46, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just noticed that like the avifauna cats, the flora is divide by reions and states. Well, I hope somebody is going to add the states under the regions as for avifauna, because it's not oing to be me. Circeus 20:47, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Links[edit]

Hi Mmcannis - please don't add links like "western North America, from central British Columbia ..." - by doing so you are stating that Canada is part of the United States, which of course, it isn't. Also please go easy on categories; if a species occurs in more than 4 or 5 states/provinces, then use a regional category that covers the whole area. - MPF 10:36, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

talk page etiquette[edit]

Regarding Talk:Graffito (archaeology): If you're wondering who made a comment, please use the edit history; it will tell you who said what and when they said it. If you wish to reply to a specific part of a comment, please quote it and add your response; posting inline destroys the flow of discussion and is the equivalent of interrupting someone while he's talking. Trees of the Caribbean Basin[edit]

Can you explain what the benefit of this edit is? If you want to include common names, why just a few, and why bold some and not others? Could you explain what your plan is? Thanks. Guettarda 05:11, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I realize this is all somebody elses work, However, you must know that I have just been creating some of the Fauna, Birds, Trees, Flora etc. I had started in Western US, (where I live). I went thru Canada, and parts of N. Mexico. The Madrean sky islands of the Sierra Madre Occidental, etc.
Anyhooowww, I just went thru the C. Amer stuff and the South American. I have no plan, just creating as I go (For example: Category Talk:Trees of Chile). And once I ended up at Tierra del Fuego, and the Falkland Islands, I found how the sub categories like: Category:Trees of the Guianas need to be put together—(see now 2011/2012, Category:Trees of northern South America).
And I just started again on the Lesser Antilles, for Trees; I had done some of the Birds. And I started putting Trees into the (New) category: Category:Trees of the Amazon; Since I don't live there, and can only read about it. ..... I do need advice. The cycad Zumila, or whatever its name is I had added to Category:Trees of Cuba when I was just starting. I just entered the Durango Pine starting down the W.Mexico side, after doing many of the categories for the states. And today I was redoing Category:Sonora, looking at links in Sonora, and updating stuff I had added to categories back in January thru July. Soooo.... I just had started, and certainly expected somebody to say something, And I could use some advice. If something ends up dumb and wrong please make an obvious change. I expect to NOT have any final answers, but some of the things I did, were at times, I think "inspiring" (like the name I found for the midwest U.S.) Trees, Fauna, and Flora, and Avifauna of: Category:Trees of Plains-Midwest U.S.—(changed to: Category:Trees of the Plains-Midwest (United States)-(as of 2011/2012, still named as such)), i later made Category:Trees of Appalachia U.S. and left off up at the Great Lakes (after working on: Category:Natural history of Ontario, which is southerly into the U.S. and has gobs of stuff from all over the South, just extending into Ontario.
Any how change anything you think appropriate, or give it a day or two. Obviously the page shouldn't be Junked-up with irrelevant info. (And I just figured out all the Yucatan stuff too: Category:Natural history of the Yucatán},and redid how it looks in the Supercategories.(and I can't reread all this to edit it.) Michael, out in the Sonoran Desert; .....--Mmcannis 05:35, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I am in Oklahoma (and very homesick). Guettarda 06:15, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner (and I'm just here for a moment now) but the Trees of the Caribbean Basin is very incomplete - I found it with just a handful of examples and have added a lot to it, but not systematically. I'll probably harvest what I can from your "Trees of..." cats when I get a chance. The list of palms of the Caribbean should be pretty much complete, at least based on the species recognised by the compiler of the Kew list (now to add some info about each species...). The Trees of the Caribbean will probably take a decade to finish ;) Guettarda 02:58, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Flora/Fauna by continent categories[edit]

Hi,

You recently reverted my edits to the continent articles, stating this: "As with the "Island Nations" of "Oceania", (and "Hawaii"), and for Flora (the "Flora of Eurasia"), so this goes here, as does "Central America", w/ its Nations".

Could you please explain to me what you mean, as it doesn't make sense to include islands, and regions of North America as seperate continents. We don't call New Zealand or Tasmania there own continent. --liquidGhoul 03:32, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't ignore me, and continue with what I am inquiring about. I want to clean up these sections, and there is still some work which needs to be done on them. These changes may fix the problems you are trying to "fix". In the mean time, I would prefer you not make any major changes without discussion. --liquidGhoul 03:47, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But why include them as continents. It is arguable as to whether the Caribbean is its own continent, but Central America is definitely not. --liquidGhoul 04:15, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I was wondering if you might have a look at List of palms of the Caribbean and see what you think of it. I am especially interested in what you think of the format - do you like the distributions the way they are formatted, do you think the comments at the end of the genus sections are useful (and do you think they would be better at the top of the section, or as they are at the end)? Thanks for your input. Guettarda 20:23, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the redirects - I was working towards WP:FL standards - list items aren't supposed to be redlinks, so I made them redirects. I agree with the issue of redlinks vs redirects - so, obviously, I realise that creating the redirects leaves me with the obligation of creating all those articles. wrong page[edit]

I am mystified by your comments: I do know how to search now, so I really don't have the excuse of not finding my name easily. a) providing you are logged in, it don't matter what browser you are using, there will always be a link to your user page on every Wikipedia page you view and it will always be in the same place; b) does it really make things any better if it is a red link? c) if you want it always to be a missing page, why do you need to find it?

But no matter. Yes it is something you can fix yourself:

  • copy and paste the present content to your talk page (standard Wikipedia courtesy)
  • replace this page with
  • wait and see what happens.

Category[edit]

Hi! I noticed some of the categorization you've been doing. I think that prior existing category "Category:American naturalists" is a more concise category that, if not quite the same, is more in line with other categorizations (categorizing naturalists by nationality rather than geographical area of work), and probably co-extensive with the one you've created. I suggest using that instead; we should clear out the new category so it can be deleted. I've added the category "natural history of the United States" to "American naturalists", so it should serve the purpose of the new category.--ragesoss 19:33, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I understand your concern, but "naturalist" is a pretty broad category (that is, Roosevelt - and certainly Carson - can legitimately be considered naturalists, even if Roosevelt wasn't a scientist, along with people like Ansel Adams, etc.), and along with "American environmentalists" and "American ecologists", it makes this category redundant. "Historical people of U.S. natural history" is also extremely awkward, and I don't think we really need a separate category for the handful of naturalists who weren't at least hyphenated-Americans and still were important for U.S. natural history. It's also not a very natural designation; by it's very nature the category invokes historical significance (people who have been significant to the study/appreciation/goverence of the U.S. natural environment), and it many cases it will hard to draw the line of who should be included. I feel it's better to keep it simple and include the appropriate existing categories in "Natural history of the United States".--ragesoss 20:51, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cat:Avifauna of Texas[edit]

Curious, what all goes in this category? I was considering adding the Greater Roadrunner to it but wasn't sure, since Category:Avifauna of Texas falls within Category:Avifauna of Southwestern United States, if its worth putting in that category? I'm not sure how the entire Fauna/Flora of ______ system works. drumguy8800 C T 22:50, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

and/or[edit]

In reverting an edit to the page Morph (zoology), you indicated that "It seems pretty clear why '...and/or...' was used here-....Putting and/or back in."

Perhaps you can explain to me what seems pretty clear about it? What seems pretty clear to me is that A OR B is True if A is True, B is True, OR A AND B are True. Please provide an example of a situation where A AND/OR B is True when A OR B is NOT True or, if you prefer, the converse.

Perhaps you find it more convenient to use the language of the article. Assume that species A is behaviourally distinct but not morphologically distinct from species B; this means that species A is behaviourally OR morphologically distinct from species B. Similarly, in the case where species A is not behaviourally distinct but is morphologically distinct from species B, we can say that species A is behaviourally OR morphologically distinct from species B. Finally, should it be that species A is behaviourally AND morphologically distinct from species B, we can see that species A is behaviourally OR morphologically distinct from species B. Can you not see that the OR condition includes the AND condition?

Please show me a possible construct where A AND/OR B conveys information that is not already included in A OR B.

For this reason, I maintain that the use of "and/or" is an abuse of the language and should be avoided. Of course, I am willing to be convinced otherwise. It's just that I can't fathom a case where "and/or" means something distinct from "or". If you can help me out in understanding why it seems so pretty clear to you, I'd be in your debt.

In the interim, I'm sure you'll understand why I shall revert that edit. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Fluri (talkcontribs) 05:34, 5 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Mountain Plover categories[edit]

Hi. You put Mountain Plover in three "endemic" categories—Endemic birds of the U.S. Rocky Mountains, Endemic birds of Plains-Midwest U.S., Endemic birds of the Southwestern United States—that are mutually exclusive. Also it's seldom found in the Rocky Mountains, and it's not even endemic to the U. S., as it's also found in Canada and Mexico. cross posted on WP-categories project[edit]

I notice you are busy adding birds of country x cats to bird articles and formatting so that they are listed on the category page by their type name; thus Blue-spotted Parrot comes under P and Yellow-rumped Fan-parrot comes under F. Why? is this some Wikipedia wide standard? Surely this doesn't aid in finding articles if you have to hunt unalphabetically for the article you want. Defaultsort[edit]

Hi Michael: I know you do a lot of work categorizing biology articles, and I wondered if you'd come across the DEFAULTSORT template yet. It can save a lot of time (and typing!) when adding the same species to a numebr of categories. Instead of having to type the same thing over and over again, you can simply list the sort name once and it will be applied to all the categories which follow the template. See Least Grebe for an example. Here, I've put Grebe, Least at the start of the list of categories, and that order has been applied to every category that follows. I thought the template might come in handy for your ongoing efforts! MeegsC | Talk 12:57, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mexicali[edit]

The reason for inclusion of Mexicali (municipality) on the Yuma County article is that the municipality borders Yuma County. I'm not arguing that the city of Mexicali borders Yuma County, or even that it's nearby: but the municipality plainly is, as you can see from this map. If you're confused about the status of Mexican municipalities, as I was until a couple of days ago, read Municipalities of Mexico — you'll see that they're analogous to US counties. Enuma Elish category[edit]

Can you please clarify what your intentions are with this? What is the point of Zodiac (Enuma Elish) being a redirect to Zodiac, seeing that the Enuma Elish isn't even mentioned there, nor is the Zodiac mentioned in the Enuma Elish article? It would be more helpful for you to expand the articles to include whatever it is you seem to think connects the two topics. Please also note the existence of Babylonian calendar, which may be a better redirect target. But as far as I can see the Babylonian calendar as reported in the article is a full millennium younger than the Enuma Elish epic. The burden would be on you to provide evidence of the form of the Zodiac at the time of the epic's composition. This may be connected with the Sumerian "Umma calendar", but we don't seem to have any references regarding that. --dab (𒁳) 18:02, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have figured it out now. As I suspected, the Enuma Elish predates the zodiac. King has chosen "stars of the Zodiac" in his translation for simplicity's sake, rendering lumashi, the name of a group of seven stars. See Babylonian zodiac. --dab (𒁳) 13:32, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also, you've been adding Category:North American restricted-range endemic bird species to articles and categories that are already in its subcategories. Please keep articles and categories in the most specific subcategories only, as it just makes a mess otherwise. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this. Postdlf (talk) 21:39, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why not just name it Category:Endemic birds of Canada? Naturally any bird only found within Canada has a range restricted therein. Or am I missing something that the extra verbiage clarifies? Postdlf (talk) 21:42, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, I figured this one out. Postdlf (talk) 16:43, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

But on further investigation... So "restricted-range" means less than 50,000 sq km according to Endemism in birds. You created this category for one species so far, the Newfoundland Crossbill. But the distribution map linked to from the article shows it has a broad range from coast to coast; its range across all of British Columbia alone would be 944,735 sq km (the total area of that province). So this means the category is now empty. You also included Lesser Prairie Chicken in the North America-level restricted-range category, even though the first external link cites its range as over 100,000 sq km. This makes me wonder what your basis is for adding the restricted-range categories to any bird species, if these are so plainly wrong. Postdlf (talk) 20:26, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ediacara biota[edit]

Thanks for the copyedits. However, I'm removing your

"Since all of Earth's present taxa were formed in the Cambrian Explosion, with no survivors from the Ediacara incorporated into it, an assumption about DNA-, or genetic-evolution should explain this. McMenamin's claim for lack of an embryonic stage doesn't address reproduction, gametes, or animals vs. plants, but the lack of embryonic stages, and DNA replication in genetic-evolution may have been solved in the Cambrian, though why it multiplied into the multipicity of forms, is probably more explained by genetic evolution, since no taxa were ever added later. Ecological niches filled rapidly with macroorganisms, but even the 'ecological niche' of the DNA, had been filled-(addition of "embryonic growth").[citation needed] Thus, with an evolution in DNA replication, 'embryonic forms' may have been incorporported into the biological life cycles, of all, or most of Earth's taxa.[citation needed]"

as it's uncited (WP:V) "all of Earth's present taxa were formed in the Cambrian Explosion, with no survivors from the Ediacara" is wrong - Kimberella was a bilaterian, and possibly an early mollusc or sister of the ancestral mollusc - see cites at Kimberella. --Philcha (talk) 06:20, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed your comment at User talk:Hmains regarding maps and locator dots. The issue you've found is one of those things I've never really wanted to dive into. Have you considered fixing the maps? "Nubayrah Stele" or the "Damanhour stele"[edit]

I have continued to do further research in this area as it relates to the Rosetta Stone.

In your article on the Nubayrah Stele you referenced an Egyptian Museum number for it. So I did a search in the literature for anything from the Egyptian Museum with that number.

I found an article in JSTOR called "The Great Temenos of Naukratis" (from the Journal of the American Research Center in Egypt, Vol. 31, (1994), pp. 99-113), and on page 103 is the following paragraph:

Petrie and Griffith "heard in the winter of 1884 that a large inscribed stone had been found in the north-east part of the Great Temenos, and taken away" to Bulaq. This was the limestone 'Damanhour stela', Cairo JE 22264/CG 22188, fromerly Bulaq 5576, dated to Year 23 of Ptolemy V Epiphanes (182 B.C.), but inscribed with what seems to be an imperfect copy of the hieroglyphic text of the Rosetta decree of Year 9 of Ptolemy V (196 B.C.).

So my original guess on the RS talk page that it went under a different name fits. Note that the old "Bulaq" number is from the beginning of the 20th century, and that a new number (and name) ought to be referenced instead.

So there may be a good argument for renaming the article to the "Damanhour stele". I can certainly find more reliable references when using this name to search than on "Nubayrah Stele". Indeed, your source (from Budge again) on the Museum reference number actually says:

A large portion of the missing lines of the hieroglyphic text can be restored from a stele discovered in 1898 at Damanhur in the Delta (Hermopolis Parva), and now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo (No. 5576)

...so "Damanhur" comes up again, perhaps suggesting that it was beginning to be better known under that name (there is no reference at all to "Nubayrah Stele" in that book you referenced, just this one. I checked).

All of this underlines my concerns about basing your work off a single source (you reference other publications, but only ever cite the works by Budge, which suggests you haven't actually read the other sources).

Forgive me, I am being critical of your approach, but I hope you understand that I am only doing so to seek clarity on the subject. Cheers! Captmondo (talk) 10:31, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: svg Map use in the "Geobox" template-(ARIZONA)[edit]

I use Google Earth to get the approximate latitude and longitude of the edges of the map. The ratio is height in pixels divided by width in pixels (I think - might be the other way around). Almost all of the .png state locator maps have already been calibrated. Be aware that different computers and monitors will shift the red dot by a few pixels in different directions. I usually only tweak if the dot is pretty far off. I will be glad to help on a specific problem, though I am busy and it may take me a few days. Mountain Zone as a reference[edit]

Thanks for creating the Fra Cristobal Range article. Please be advised that mountainzone.com is not a reliable reference. While they often have correct information, usually directly from the United States Geological Survey, they often have very suspect information, for example see their entry for "Endicott Mountains" in Alaska. Montainzone.com does not have adequate editorial review. Peakbagger.com is better, it does do editorial review. Overall, it is much better to cite to United States Geological Survey sources directly. Take a look, for example, at GNIS. --Bejnar (talk) 22:36, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"archaeological corpus"[edit]

re Category:Archaeological corpora, Category:Archaeological corpora documents

Please stop inventing terms. The term "archaeological corpus" exists, but it doesn't mean what you think you mean. If you do not have a solid background or education in a subject, you would do well to verify things before plunging into editing. If this sounds curt, please remember that I have asked you before to stop creating random categories in Ancient Near East topics. --dab (𒁳) 13:37, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication of notability.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Fit like min (what like man)[edit]

Hi there, just thought I'd post a quick thank you for all your efforts tidying up after me lately. Much appreciated. Been an honour editing with you sir! Reply to P. Bedson, (now an "honorary Sumerian, etc")[edit]

I will try to be succinct, (not necessarily short):

  1. --I love editting. I only fix a typo, or an edit if I want an article on my watch list. 98 percent are still on my watch list.
  2. --at work once a compatriot had a hard copy, about 7 paragraphs of a hugely technical computer/ sound-(acoustic)/ software-trailer-mounted system for "scoring" a sound-produced event. (think weapons). The first paragraph was one sentence about 10 technical ideas strung together, about 5 sentences worth. I made 2 minor edits for the following 6 paragraphs, but I looked at my buddy, and said-(for para 1)... I get this with these edits to the mid paragraph point.... but from there i am lost. He said, yeah, i know.... I never looked at the final copy, but the Trailer appeared some years later.
  3. --Edits to me, are like the BIG S, in Greek the Sigma-(i.e. Smmation: minor ones added to Major ones): I start at the first sentence, or words, and just continue...(or at midpoint, then go back to Start Point) and continue to the end. For the Song of the hoe, I didn't press SAVE, until between iteration 10 to 20, maybe about the 15th point, I added the last comma, or whatever.
  4. --A quick look at the Gudea cylinders appears to confirm that: Graham Hancock... (his books, follow-on ideas) about the 'star alignments, with buildings is proof from the cylinders that the Great Pyramids,.. are (obviously, (by Deductive Observation, (reasoning), etc)), the three stars of Orion's Belt. (I will never read his books, though I turned pages in them. As with wikipedia, I seldom read EVERY article I edit.) (time)... (I assume Hancock wasn't the FIRST-person)
  5. --I consider ALL of WIKIPEDIA, personal RESEARCH. all of the REF's are irrelevant (to me). Planet Earth-H. Sapies-humanitarium, is still coming out of the Dark Ages (of Religion, and fool-hardy interpretaions of our smarts)
  6. --Paul, please explain the title on my talk page: (if you care to): == Fit like min (what like man) ==. I'm smart, (but not clairvoyant-smart)(I have only one guess what it means)
  7. --I used to order the book at the Bookstore (B. & Noble), and have a shelf (1/4th filled with books on Egypt-(at the store), ...that I had at home). (the favorite was the (book), with the (now famous, color) Dashur-necklace encircling the 5 Hieroglyph-based small, miniature "pendants" where 1 of 5 was upside down. To view, the book had to be rotated 180 deg.).. (it's the Hotep "tablet", with hieroglyphs sitting on it instead).. (these are all beautifil, colorful, stone-inlaid pendants)
  8. Charles R. Pellegrino's book from some years ago, Return to Sodom and Gomorah-(I read most of it once-(or twice): uses the term riverworlds referring to the Nile Egypt, and the Tigris-Euphrates-World... It explains why the cultures began at the same starting points.. (water), it also explains why they are so dramatically different in their typology, cosmology, etc. (Not Pellegrino's explanation: but using the term, easily defines the history from about 5500 BC to the Greek-Roman World time)

These are just 'notes to self', and as I started editting some of your articles, I knew you'd be examining my edits.... For what it is worth, on Wikipedia Commons I created, first: Category:Hieroglyphs on meda, then Category:Cuneiform on media. The Gudea cylinders photos have been there at least 2-3 years-(Category:Hieroglyphs on clay cylinders-(or whatever the cat name is).... And I had to go to commons to make the Cat: Category:Hieroglyphs of Egypt (check the Category:Meteor hieroglyph, and look at the stele in the Louvre).. that categorizing of Photos was needed before I worked on the Category:Egyptian hieroglyphs-Gardiner listed. Till later... (floating along in my own 'Edin')
And...thanks for giving me "grist for the mill", and how many more topics are on the clay tablets (it is pretty much endless, part of my quote: "you can't teach, what you don't know")... [from the HOT-108-to-114-Deg-3 weeks-more) SonoranDesert-ArizonaUSA-... Mmcannis (talk) 06:57, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Economic texts = Text corpus?[edit]

I have noticed that you have made several valuable and constructive edits to the Kassite king articles I have been developing, for which I thank you. I also note that you have added a link to the phrase "economic texts" to the page marked "text corpus" which I do not understand. When using the term "economic texts" I have tried to cite some examples, e.g. shopping receipts, records of tax collections, etc., to try to better elucidate what the term really means in terms of the analysis of cuneiform tablets. The link seems to be even more vague.BigEars42 (talk) 19:41, 3 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You.
I first have to say: – I'm the creator of the Category:Clay tablets, and the cat I just created for it: Category:Ancient Near and Middle East clay objects-(Plus the WikiCommons categories). I previously worked on the Amarna letters and the three cats I created for it. It was an intense 8-week effort, at the end of which I googled all visible Amarna EA letters. One photo I had to do a "reproduction" of. It was the reverse side of a letter -(the continuation of the letter's topic), and the only real word I found was Ha Na T N, for the now article Hannathon-((8 characters in the line, last 4 for HaNaThoN)). (It was on the Bible, archaeology list)--(I also created the category: Category:Kudurru boundary stones in one intense weekend.)(Googled)(Note: as a Novice, I had worked on 10-to 20- to 40 different EA letters, about 15-30 with Answers (translations), over about 3 years, intermixed with the Epic of Gilgamesh translations where I ended up with 3 photos of 3 sections of the 12 tablets. Middle, then tablet I, then tablet XI.)
The text corpus stuff was just a reference to the text corpus of an archive, document hoard, "library", cache, in this case the clay tablets. One of the articles you just referred to....mentioned, I think a 7-year extent-(time period) for the clay letter corpus-(A timestamped event: 7 years, is one definition for a corpus)..... So, I'll send you a note on your talk page that I've commmented. (And...... I believe the ONLY real truth written, is in Egyptian hieroglyphs, Cuneiform, tablets, and steles, or stone inscriptions, or other 'royal objects', or 'non-Royal', 'populist objects'. I know other archaeological languages can be trusted (the oldest Greek), but as you know, so much gets re-Written, or re-Interpreted. I could move the photo, but I don't think it is a free image. There are several copies on the internet (eg [1]) - I believe it is scanned from a book. I suspect the page relating to the image on amharic wiki says that, but as it just looks like a bunch of squiggles to me too, I don't know for certain. A non-free image would not be acceptable on the English Wikipedia, assuming the object still exists in a museum somewhere, and it would be possible to get a free-licence photo of it. --Elen of the Roads (talk) 22:10, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was on a mission of filling articles into the new category (I created) Category:Prescott National Forest-(responding to efforts by User_talk:Jllm06 in his categorizing of Arizona articles).
I assume only one species of Pinyon dominates the Chino Valley (Arizona), but one species is at least found in northwest Arizona and Nevada and states around Nevada. (The Chino Valley species is the Colorado/New Mexico/Arizona/etc. species)—Another (1/or 2) species may be in Arizona, in the southeast, possibly the Mexico-region-species. So the link to 'Pinyon' was to get somebody/searching to the various species, or a discussion thereof.
An article for Pine trees of Arizona would have a subsection for the Pine trees of Arizona#Pinyons and their state regions.Mmcannis (talk) 19:59, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Many pharaohs used as one of their 5-names: Neb-Kheper-Ra. I can't speak for the various spellings of the name by the Hittites, (in probably more than one reference), but here, Neb Kheper Ra, is the Egyptian hieroglyphs.

V30L1N5(King created(of the) sun(god))

What is more important-----an individual, a person has to study or know the source material. A translation will not do. After one studies, or learns Egyptian hieroglyphs, a student of (E. hieroglyphs) is forced to learn the 1350-1335 BC Amarna letters, written in the pre-Arabic, Akkadian language, and "Canaanite", (the Akkadian being the lingua franca, the correspondent, official language, for scribes).

Neb-Kheper-Ra means Lord-Transforming-Ra, King-Transforming-Sun. (In cuneiform lord is a different word than King. In the Amarna letters the Pharaoh is referred to as King-Lord-mine, then Gods-mine, Sun-god-mine, etc.) So... Lord/King-Transformed-Sun is something along the lines of: King-Manifested-(of)-Ra, King, Manifested of The SunGod. The later Greeks, the Ptolemies of Egypt used the word "manifest" as the word "epiphany", the thing that "appears", and in hieroglyphs using the walking feet

I personally do NOT participate in the Big G, God, or small "god", but it was used in Egyptian hieroglyphs, and cuneiform, and is part of HUMAN history. I also don't partake of the religion game of Agnosticism, or Atheism. I am more a member of Homo sapiens sapiens, not the more common, Homo sapiens religiosum. And the Common Man, or Common Woman, in all cultures, eventually in thier personal lives, or at times in their lives, leave H. sapiens religiosum, to become H. sapiens sapiens, part of a lot of people, crowds of common people, the "citizens"-(also represented in hieroglyphs, in more than one word; the 2nd script on the Rosetta Stone is the "citizen script" of Demotic Egyptian), the common man. (Thanks Ron; this helps me understand my last 6 months understanding of the H. sapiens religiosum; I now see the part related to the "Common Man")-Cheers to all....(signed to User_talk:Hmains, late October)

Adding a message posting, Late October, for the Homo sapiens religiosum discussion, which answered a question, (I had been having for 6 months)...--Mmcannis (talk) 05:28, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Kudurru of Meli-Šipak"[edit]

I was going to suggest "Land grant to Marduk-apla-iddina kudurru", but unfortunately my draft is only around half done. This is because Meli-Šipak never names Marduk-apla-iddina as his son, only his servant, leaving the tempting possibility that either Marduk-apla-iddina was not his successor, or that his successor was not his son.

You had caught me unawares as I had nothing prepared for this kudurru, my efforts being currently devoted to the "Land grant to Munnabittu kudurru" (i.e. the Marduk-apla-iddina I one with 47 god names) and the "Prebend to Puzru kudurru" (Nazi-Maruttash).

You might look to compare the Kudurru of Gula and Nazimaruttaš kudurru stone as these also seem to describe the same object, ironically a kudurru-copy of the era of Marduk-apla-iddina I, a period which seems to have favored Gula as a divine image. The god of healing exhorted perhaps because of the bronze age collapse which was unfolding. Here there are two other kudurrus featuring Gula, for example this one, which has nothing else to provide its name as the inscription is degraded. Perhaps the "Kudurru of Gula" name could be recycled? BigEars42 (talk) 22:54, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dox Formation Outcrop Map[edit]

As you commented on, I agree that a map of the Dox Formation / Unkar Group in the Grand Canyon is needed. I am thinking about one. Unfortunately, either making one or finding one that does not violate copyright will take time. Clover Valley Nevada[edit]

This valley is "not" H-shaped. The portion you interpreted to be the "eastern half" is a completely separate valley, Independence Valley. It even is signed on Interstate 80: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kenlund/2378610819/

I have therefore removed all references to the "eastern half" and its supposed "H-shape". Famartin (talk) 13:23, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:2640s BC requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for four days or more and it is not presently under discussion at Categories for discussion, or at disambiguation categories.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Proposed deletion of List of Bouse and Centennial Wash landforms[edit]

The article List of Bouse and Centennial Wash landforms has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unclear why this group of landforms should have its own list article, or what the contents of the article actually mean.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Grapheme entries[edit]

Please, please stop creating article pages about individual graphemes. This is entirely within the scope of Wiktionary, where your contributions will be very welcome and perfectly adequate. With your current approach you are creating a giant backlog of content to be moved to Wikitionary. In rare cases, where individual graphemes may indeed satisfy WP:NOTE, please pay attention and check if your article already exists. E.g. your An (cuneiform) is a cfork of Dingir, which is the existing page on the exact same grapheme. General information on the grapheme itself belongs on the corresponding Wiktionary page, in this case wikt:𒀭. --dab (𒁳) 10:53, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mmcannis.

I refer you to the article List of Pará rivers by confluence you created in 2007. This seems to have been forgotten since then, and has remained orphaned since then, and also with no inline references. Do you want to keep it? If so, please advise, and it needs a bit of work and linking in somewhere. If not, please advise an I will initiate a deletion process.

birds of the Madrean Sky Islands[edit]

I've been working my way through the (massive) WP:Birds cleanup listing, trying to resolve some of the longterm issues, and today came across the list of birds of the Madrean Sky Islands, which Postdlf tells me was created from a deleted category you had created. (The category was deleted in 2009, and the article was created to preserve its contents). Did you get the information about which species were found in the Madrean Sky Islands from somewhere, or are they your personal observations? If the former, can you please provide a reference? Otherwise, the article is likely to be deleted. MeegsC (talk) 17:02, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I've spent a fair bit of time in Arizona myself! Unfortunately, while you may be right about the species you've included in the list of birds of the Madrean Sky Island article, without references it's original research, which isn't appropriate for the encyclopedia. Do you think you can find sources for the species on the list? MeegsC (talk) 21:29, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I only did it as a learning experience. I made categories for Central and South America. Somebody recently (a few years ago) completed my categorizing of regions for South American birds, by doing the Andean, and dividing it into Central, Northern, and Southern. I presently am more interested in the Amarna letters, as I have already entered about 25, ((( of 380 ))), and find their implications (in Human history)----- beyond profound. As humans are still doing what they (we) have always been doing... (and we are taking it to other planetoids). The world is learning --- but most people have no time to learn the truth about anything).. I have been delayed by health, and a change of priorities. There are interesting philosophies:--- Robert Frost "Education by presence", and Apache indian philosophy "I am what I do".... I have had little time to be on the computer. ( I am proud of the things I got started---- Wikipedia,,,, is quite a human project !!! )Mmcannis (talk) 21:40, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
