WikiCup 2021 March newsletter

Round 1 of the competition has finished; it was a high-scoring round with 21 contestants scoring more than 100 points. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 55 contestants qualifying. You will need to finish among the top thirty-two contestants in Round 2 if you are to qualify for Round 3. Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius led the field with a featured article, nine good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 945 points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132 was close behind with 896 points, largely gained from 71 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  • Scotland ImaginesTigers, who has been editing Wikipedia for less than a year, was in third place with 711 points, much helped by bringing League of Legends to featured article status, exemplifying how bonus points can boost a contestant's score.
  • Rwanda Amakuru came next with 708 points, Kigali being another featured article that scored maximum bonus points.
  • Ktin, new to the WikiCup, was in fifth place with 523 points, garnered from 15 DYKs and 34 "In the news" items.
  • Botswana The Rambling Man scored 511 points, many from featured article candidate reviews and from football related DYKs.
  • Gog the Mild, last year's runner-up, came next with 498 points, from a featured article and numerous featured article candidate reviews.
  • Hog Farm, at 452, scored for a featured article, four good articles and a number of reviews.
  • United States Le Panini, another newcomer to the WikiCup, scored 438 for a featured article and three good articles.
  • England Lee Vilenski, last year's champion, scored 332 points, from a featured article and various other sport-related topics.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. In Round 1, contestants achieved eight featured articles, three featured lists and one featured picture, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. They completed 97 good article reviews, nearly double the 52 good articles they claimed. Contestants also claimed for 135 featured article and featured list candidate reviews. There is no longer a requirement to mention your WikiCup participation when undertaking these reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or something else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Mothercraft Training Society

Hi MeegsC

I agree the source is confusing, but in 1930 when the annex was opened the current Queen's title was Princess Elizabeth of York - see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_titles_and_honours_of_Elizabeth_II

The title of the Queen Mother at the time she opened the annex was the Duchess of York. What would be more appropriate for a maternity care centre than to name its new building after a four year old princess? People were very fussy about titles and names then and if the intention was to call it after the Duchess of York they would have done so. They were so deferential then, that I suspect the board of the centre would have asked the Palace if the Duchess would like the new annex to be named in honour of the Duchess (who was a patron of the Mothercraft Training Society) and she suggested that it should be named after her child, Princess Elizabeth.

Simon — Preceding unsigned comment added by Simon Edwards Esq (talkcontribs) 11:29, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

Mothercraft Training Society

It would make no sense at all, and in fact it would have been a slight to the Duchess, to have called it the Princess Elizabeth Hostel, if the intention was to have named it after the Duchess. After all she opened it, and if it was to have been called after her why wouldn't it have been called after her title at the time of opening - The Duchess of York Hostel? Why would she want it called after an old title of hers? Remember that at that time she had no idea that her four year old daughter, Princess Elizabeth of York, would become queen - indeed it was very unlikely. I don't have a source to confirm, I'm afraid, so don't worry about DYK. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Simon Edwards Esq (talkcontribs) 11:59, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

Pings

Hi there, what triggers a notification is using any of the notification templates AND a signature with the same edit. If you forget to sign, it does not work. I’m sure Gertrude has the nomination page on her watchlist and she’ll thus see it anyway. Schwede66 19:06, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

Schwede66 – yep. Unfortunately, I forgot to sign. D'oh! I was hoping one (or both) of you would be watching. MeegsC (talk) 19:10, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
So what you do in future is two further edits. Step one: remove notification templates and save. Step 2: paste templates back in, sign and save. That fixes it. If you’ve signed but had forgotten the template (or messed it up), it’s easier. Add / fix template, change the time in the signature time stamp, and save. Schwede66 19:17, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

Prep sets

Thank you for your work on building prep sets. Prep 2, which I have just moved into the queue, seems a nicely balanced set. Before you finish with a set, you should remove any unused {{DYKnom|Example|Nominator}} at the foot, which is only there to provide an example of the credit format for nominations I suppose. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:36, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

Cwmhiraeth - sure! Sorry to have forgotten. I've enjoyed learning the process; time-consuming but interesting. Glad to do my bit! MeegsC (talk) 07:15, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

hi again

Just curious about 2nd image on infobox, but Purple-throated cotinga and Ring Ouzel has it.

If you look, there is no other picture of a female purple-throated cotinga on that article's page. Same thing on the ring ouzel page. However, there is a picture of a female/nonbreeding male elsewhere on the black-chinned sparrow page – with additional information in the caption. MeegsC (talk) 09:23, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
Okay, so only male bird can get multiple images. I'm trying to get a quality image on Flickr on every GA or becoming GA bird article soon, but thanks for the info. 180.194.141.59 (talk) 09:41, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
No, you mistake me. For one thing, females and nonbreeding males look the same, so trying to make it a male/female thing is ridiculous. Right now, on the black-chinned sparrow page, we have one clear male, one female/nonbreeding male/youngster, and one back view. No repeated images. Perhaps on other pages, there are repeated images. In my view, there shouldn't be. Each picture should illustrate something different. Yes, I could move the nonbreeding bird picture into the infobox, but that would mean losing the caption, which has some good information in it. I see no reason to do that. And as for "quality images", are you saying you think there's an issue with the pictures already in the article? With which one? MeegsC (talk) 09:52, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
There's no Issue, I mean I tend to find good quality image on flickr on Every GA article without a real-life photo of a bird with only illustation image on infobox like Blyth's kingfishe‎r (which I changed). 180.194.141.59 (talk) 10:02, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
Ah! I understand. That's great! The project can always use more good pictures of birds. Like I said before, if you're adding multiple images, try to get birds of different ages, or in different plumages, or within their habitat, or engaged in interesting behaviours. In general, I think it's better to put multiple images in the text of the article rather than putting multiples in the infobox. For one thing, the infobox constrains them (because of the parameters set there) where putting them in the article doesn't. And it's good to fill in the "alt text" parameter for anything you add too, so that our unsighted visitors can understand what's being shown. MeegsC (talk) 10:08, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
Ok, noted. I don't do alt text, cause I don't have knowledge of describing anything (I just did it on Chestnut-capped piha on attempting to help the guy on GA). If I saw you aiming the bird article into GA, I'll do my best to request a good image on flickr, thank you. 180.194.141.59 (talk) 10:20, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

MeegsC, will you be returning to this nomination to respond, or should I find a new reviewer to consider the issues you raised that the nominator has pinged you about. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:53, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

No worries, SL93. You've been a real workhorse at DYK – I think you build more preps than the rest of us put together! MeegsC (talk) 21:09, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
I try my best. I review a set of nominations before promoting them one by one - I have been wondering if doing it that way is an issue because I remember Yoninah wondering why I don't save the prep as one edit. Knowing me, I would likely mess up the formatting that way. Anyway, I think you do a great job building preps. SL93 (talk) 21:14, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks SL93! That's high praise, coming from a long-timer like you. :) I'm enjoying it; it gives me an excuse to read lots of articles I probably wouldn't have seen otherwise. It takes an absolute age though! MeegsC (talk) 07:58, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
I'm glad that there are other prep builders. I was building them mostly by myself after Yoninah died and then I just decided to give up unless more help arrived. I'm so glad that it did. SL93 (talk) 18:26, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

Building sets

The sets that you build are great, but set builders really should be working from the oldest to the newest to build balanced preps. There are still multiple nominators who have been waiting since last month. SL93 (talk) 11:28, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

SL93, I do start each set looking at the oldest hooks. But I think that building interesting, varied sets is more important than just starting with the oldest. As one whose recent DYK hook waited well over a month to run, I understand the frustration with waiting, believe me! ;) MeegsC (talk) 11:31, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
I guess we just have different ways of going for interesting sets. I was mostly confused because there are currently around 126 hooks to choose from in the approved list and a hook from April 23 was promoted. SL93 (talk) 11:37, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
I don't just start from the oldest. I start from the oldest to build a varied set and I don't think too hard into what I find most interesting because obviously someone has found all of the approved hooks interesting. An example is prep 2 which I recently finished - none of the topics are the same as each other although it could be argued that The Dream of Ossian and Ethel Becher are slightly related because of the war angle, but I believe that the first hook is more related to art and the latter hook is more related to nursing. SL93 (talk) 12:17, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
I'm just letting you know that I didn't mean anything bad by this. I did bring it up on the DYK talk page to innocently see what others thought, but someone thought that I was targeting them despite me not naming anyone or even paying much attention to who filled the prep area. It was very upsetting to me. SL93 (talk) 15:01, 26 April 2021 (UTC)
That's okay SL93. We have different ways of doing things, which is fine. The world would be a very boring place if everybody was the same! MeegsC (talk) 17:18, 26 April 2021 (UTC)
I did think that not naming anyone and not paying attention to who promoted those hooks would be a good way to get people's two cents. Now I'm even questioning myself when it comes to even bringing up actual technical errors in hooks. I respect Yoninah and Cwm-however the username is spelled and I just learned off of them. I don't think getting opinions should mean that I'm targeting someone. SL93 (talk) 17:42, 26 April 2021 (UTC)
Well, it seems to me that prep building is going nicely at the moment, with several sets regularly being filled and ready for moving into the queue. I promote a few hooks occasionally, but normally restrict myself to no more than two per set, so as not to disqualify myself from moving the set into the queue if necessary. When I do promote hooks, I mainly choose older ones, or ones that SL93 has created or approved, otherwise such hooks may get stuck. DYK seems to be running smoothly. WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  • Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
  • England Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
  • Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
  • Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. The Duke

Thank you for promoting Britten's Jubilate. Only now do I see that it mentions the Duke's birthdays which would make much sense on 10 June, which would have been his centenary. What do you think? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:44, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

I'm happy to move it to the special events area if you prefer. I tweaked the hook wording a bit to make it a bit more "English" (e.g. "at the request" instead of "on the request"). I was just going to drop you a note and ask you if the changes looked okay. Let me know! MeegsC (talk) 11:47, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for the offer, and the tweak in the hook, and the copy-editing of the article, and yes, if not too much work, put it to special occasions. I like hooks on a person's birthday, and now 100 ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:50, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
Sounds good! I'll do that now. MeegsC (talk) 11:52, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Casque (anatomy)

On 8 May 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Casque (anatomy), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the casques of some large hornbill species (example pictured) can take up to six years to reach their full size? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Casque (anatomy). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Casque (anatomy)), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Preening scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the above article has been scheduled as today's featured article for May 8, 2021. Please check that the article needs no amendments. A coordinator will draft a blurb - based on your draft if the TFA came via TFA requests, or for Featured Articles promoted recently from an existing blurb on the FAC talk page. Feel free to comment on this.

We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks and congratulations on your work. Gog the Mild (talk) 19:36, 25 April 2021 (UTC)

Thank you today for the article about "a behaviour that all birds use to keep their feathers in good shape. It's a behaviour that most of us have probably witnessed at some point, as birds spend quite a bit of time each day preening — up to 15% of their day, in some species. I've enjoyed researching this one; though I've been birding nearly my whole life, even I didn't know some of this before I worked on the article!"! --

Thanks Gerda Arendt! It was a fun one to work on. MeegsC (talk) 08:57, 8 May 2021 (UTC)

dyk

Hey, MeegsC! I wonder if you'd be willing to move the Meredith Clark hook back to approved noms? It's an American hook and because of two-a-days that set is due to run in the US night, and I'm hoping whoever promotes it will think it's a good image; I know you'd already put an image into that set. Also it was only nominated a week ago, so there are dozens of hooks ahead of it in line. People already think regulars at dyk get some sort of special treatment. :D —valereee (talk) 13:38, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Sure, I can do that, valereee. I was trying to find some US hooks to balance all the European ones! MeegsC (talk) 13:48, 10 May 2021 (UTC)
That's an interesting point...we generally do have more US hooks than anything else, so how to balance that during two-a-days? Hm. —valereee (talk) 15:11, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi there, thanks again for your review of this article. I've been thinking about nominating this at FAC, and wondered if you had any thoughts or suggestions? I'm pretty confident the article is at, or close to, the best possible version of itself—my general barometer for when an article should be a featured article—but would appreciate your input, as someone who has already looked at the article in depth. Thanks, --Usernameunique (talk) 16:37, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

MeegsC, please return to this nomination as soon as possible to let us know whether your concerns have been addressed. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:07, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

BlueMoonset, I thought I had made clear on the nomination that the changes Craigthebirder had made were fine and fixed my concern. I've repeated that again. Hopefully that's enough? MeegsC (talk) 20:48, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
MeegsC, you have the most recently placed icon, the slash. If your issues have been addressed and the nomination has met the DYK criteria, then it's up to you to supersede your slash icon by placing a tick with a subsequent comment; the article can't be moved to the Approved page by the bot while the latest icon says there are issues. Ah. Okay. Thanks BlueMoonset. I'll be sure to do that in the future. MeegsC (talk) 20:56, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 869 points from 11 DYKs, all with bonus points, and 54 "In the news" items, mostly covering people who had recently died.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 817 points from 3 featured articles on historic battles in Europe, 5 featured article reviews and 3 good articles.
  • Hog Farm, with 659 points from 2 featured articles and 2 good articles on American Civil War battles, 18 featured article reviews, 2 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 4 DYKs.

In round three, contestants achieved 19 featured articles, 7 featured lists, 106 featured article reviews, 72 good articles, 1 good topic, 62 good article reviews, 165 DYKs and 96 ITN items. We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (one contestant in round 3 lost out because of this). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, Botswana The Rambling Man and New York (state) Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being Republic of Venice Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are Gog the Mild, England Lee Vilenski, Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, Rwanda Amakuru and Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. George Floyd mural Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

Haematomma ochroleucum

Regarding your comment on WT:DYK this article was lifted from my sandbox with nary a mention of my work in the revision history of the article. This is the second time that this user has done this with my work and it's really not on!, I note this was done by an IP user and it was their only edit. What was the other occasion? Schwede66 22:52, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

I'm assuming it's the same anonymous user who lifted my rufous-brown solitaire article (sandbox copy) a few years ago. Also without attribution, also without asking first. MeegsC (talk) 08:56, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
The first one was in April 2021 by a user in the Philippines. That user gave attribution in their edit summary (but obviously it’s not ok to ask first). The second one was a user in Japan. What I don’t understand about the first case is why you would start an article in draft space for something that’s been in maintenance forever? Or am I missing something? Schwede66 09:24, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Schwede66, I often write large expansions for existing articles in my own sandbox, and then transfer those sections into the live article at some later point — particularly if I'm trying to get to 5x expansion, in order to submit it to DYK. (As you can see from my sandboxes, it often takes me a very long time to get a 5x expansion. I have too many RL commitments to be able to work on WP every day. Or even every week!) As for whether I think it's the same person, someone from the Philippines and I had multiple conversations (over several months and multiple IP addresses) where he made it clear he was watching all of my sandboxes and article upgrades. He also admitted he was the one who'd moved the first article. He became a helpful asset, helping to find photos from CC-compliant sites to support articles I was working on. I'm pretty sure it's the same person who wished me a happy Christmas (using still another Philippine-based IP) at the end of last year. The fact that he comments there that it appears I'm no longer active and then days later one of my sandboxes is cloned? Possibly coincidence, possibly not. I'm not inclined to think a second person is randomly watching my sandboxes, if we're honest. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe my writing efforts are more popular than I think! ;-) MeegsC (talk) 13:49, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Schwede66 For what it's worth, I think it might help to add here that is not unusual for editors to do that (what else is the sandbox for?) but also there are other reasons why there are unpublished articles in many userspaces on WP, which appear to be almost or even completely ready for publication. I currently have one like that, which looks complete, but is actually not neutral, relying as it does on old sources which were not written from a 21st-century pc perspective. I have bought a book which will make a great source for balancing the article, but I have not yet read it fully, or worked out how to apply it as a source. Some of us don't do short, drive-by article creations; some of us want to do it properly first time out. Another very good reason for not publishing an apparently finished article is that it contains major errors and/or doubtful sources, or due to a recent event it has become out of date. Sometimes there are some perfect sources out there, but the editor is waiting to be able to afford to subscribe, i.e. get back beyond the source paywall again, so as to double-check the source. This may happen to students who have institutional access to sources, then after leaving their academic institution they have to wait until they can get access to sources again. Some editors retire from paid work, and find that they must cancel all or some of their many subscriptions to academic sources. WP library is very useful, but it is limited, and is no substitute for certain sources on niche subjects. Those of us who create articles are very lucky that (although there will always be creeps who want to overlook our userfied work-up articles) WP at least officially does let us alone to get on with it, without hassling us as to how, why and when. Some years ago, I was working up an article which became huge and was split into several articles. I became anxious because an old-fashioned attitude that I grew up with was fighting with the very laudable modern attitude, which was fighting with the academic necessity of proving by third-party citation only. It took me some years to dare to publish it. Since then that work has spawned two building listings by National Heritage, and two blue plaques, plus some newspaper articles. I am shortly to lecture on the subject of those articles, by invitation of a city's civic society. So sometimes it is worthwhile waiting to get it right. My apologies for such a long comment, but I think it had to be said. Storye book (talk) 14:26, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
I see. Thanks for the thorough explanation. Schwede66 16:53, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

My edit (now deleted) on the above article talk page

MeegsC, please accept my apologies for an editing error that you saw in my comment (due to my failing eyesight), which was actually intended to support your complaint. I was attempting to correct it to say that you started it in 2017 and the thief pretended to start it in 2021, when that page was deleted. The initial error was due to me attempting to add more information into my comment, and I added it into the wrong place, which swapped over the identities and dates. Really sorry. Storye book (talk) 11:02, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

Storye book, I figured that was what you'd intended, but wanted to make it crystal clear to anyone else who didn't bother to check the sandbox logs themselves. Thanks for your support there! I'll try to finish the article up and get it into mainspace soon, but RL is pretty crazy at the moment. MeegsC (talk) 13:21, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. Good luck and all the best. Storye book (talk) 14:30, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Coming back to your original question what can be done about it, MeegsC. Nothing at the IP user end if there are random IPs involved. So the only approach is to delete work from mainspace taken without attribution. 66 16:53, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Schwede66 Are you sure that that is the only option? MeegsC has said that it could be kept in mainspace if it could be attributed to them, as the true original creator. Now, I have heard that an administrator can merge mainspace article histories with userspace workup histories in cases where the article has been copied and pasted into mainspace instead of being moved. I have not followed that up, but if it were possible, that would give original credit to MeegsC. I don't know whether MeegsC would want it done that way, but should they want that - is it not worth finding out whether it is feasible, and then giving MeegsC the last word on the decision? Storye book (talk) 17:53, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Indeed, a history merge can also be done. That’s easy enough; I could do that if it’s desired. Schwede66 18:01, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Excellent! I look forward to hearing what MeegsC has to say, then. Storye book (talk) 18:35, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 May newsletter

The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  1. New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
  2. Christmas Island AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
  3. Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
  4. Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
  5. Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
  6. United States Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
  7. England Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.

The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! WikiCup 2022 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
  • Christmas Island AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
  • Philadelphia GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
  • SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
  • United Nations Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.

These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.
  • Sammi Brie, with 527, from a variety of submissions related to radio and television stations.

Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. List building tool: SearchSuite

You might find SearchSuite helpful for finding relevant topics to add to your lists in the Outline of lichens. It provides toggles in the side menu to enhance search results, including the ability to strip entries down to one line each, alphabetize the entries, present the entries in wiki list format (for ease of copying/pasting directly into articles such as outlines), and more.

It is even more powerful when used with the following "tip-of-the-day": Tip of the day/March 18 - Breaking the 500 limit applied to search results. This can be used with WP search results to list up to 5,000 (10,000 for admins).

Please let me know if you find these useful, and feel free to ask questions.    — The Transhumanist   14:25, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

Feel free to amend the draft blurb, which can be found at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/September 2022, or to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/September 2022. Outline of lichens

Please do not feel intimidated by my edits, which are made in the spirit of assistance. Feel free to undo or change anything as you see fit. After all, you have expertise in the subject, while I have none. I defer to your judgement. Your work on the outline shows that you truly enjoy the topic, and helping others to learn about it. I can hardly wait to see what you come up with next. Have fun,    — The Transhumanist   15:14, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

Nice outline. Have you considered using {{annotated link}} for the taxonomic groups? Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 15:10, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks Peter! I'm afraid most of the annotations would be fairly uninformative. For instance, all 8 classes would say "class of fungi" (which is already pretty apparent from the section header) and the 38 orders would all say "order of fungi". I can try to make the short descriptions more specific (i.e. "order of fungi in class foo"), but I find they typically get changed back to the very simplest of descriptions. MeegsC (talk) 15:22, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
Unfortunately some of our editors do not consider the alternative uses for short descriptions and are fixated on an arbitrary and unofficial length limit. I agree if this is common, they would not be very useful. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 16:03, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

Userbox

Hello. FYI, I've had a userbox created for me, and I thought it might be of interest since you were involved with the WikiProject Novels/Crime task force. It says "This user reads Hard-boiled detective fiction" and the code to implement it is:

Revolver_dame This user reads Hard-boiled detective fiction.

. (Add double braces to the red text: {{ }}). Pete Best Beatles (talk) 22:14, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

Thanks, Pete. I'll have a look. MeegsC (talk) 06:02, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the code seems to have a typo, causing it to appear incorrectly. Here is the fixed code that you can copy and paste.
Wikitext userbox where used
{{User:KomradeKalashnikov/Userboxes/HB Detective Fiction}}
Revolver_dame This user reads Hard-boiled detective fiction.

WikiCup 2022 September newsletter

The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

At this stage, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For the remaining competitors, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and importantly, before the deadline on October 31st!

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). I absolutely don't mind help on this one either. I basically picked it because it's one of our more widely-read articles, and could use a lot of work! MeegsC (talk) 20:51, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
Ok, I'll sort out my literature here, and take cellphone images of the good stuff. Not clear on the best way to get it to you; are you familiar with Sharedrop P2P file transfer website? Apparently I can drag and drop files onto it, send you the address, then you can take the files from there. Esculenta (talk) 20:59, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
Or you could just email them to me using the Wikipedia email feature. MeegsC (talk) 21:01, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
Sure, that works too (function wasn't showing up for me before because one needs to have an email setup in preferences); I'll email by tomorrow. Esculenta (talk) 21:05, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
Hmmm, email only seems to work with plain text (can't attach files), unless there's something I don't know about? Esculenta (talk) 21:13, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
Looks like you're right. Check your emails though, Esculenta; I've sent you a message. MeegsC (talk) 21:49, 24 September 2022 (UTC)

Flavocetraria

Hi MeegsC, the Flavocetraria -> Nephromopsis synonymy is one of many that was rejected by Lücking (2019) doi:10.1080/07352689.2019.1650517. The other instances in the Parmeliaceae are Cetrariopsis, Flavocetrariella, Kaernefeltia, Masonhalea, Nesolechia, Raesaenenia, Tuckermanella, Tuckermanopsis, Usnocetraria, and Vulpicida. WikiCup 2022 November newsletter

The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is

  • England Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
  • New York City Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
  • Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
  • Chicago PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
  • Toronto Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.

During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.

  • England Lee Vilenski wins the featured article prize, for a total of 6 FAs during the course of the competition and 3 in the final round.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh wins the featured list prize, for 3 FLs in round 2.
  • Adam Cuerden wins the featured picture prize, for 39 FPs during the competition.

  • New York (state) Epicgenius wins the good article prize, for 32 GAs in round 1.
  • SounderBruce wins the featured topic prize, for 4 FT articles in round 1.
  • England Lee Vilenski wins the good topic prize, for 34 GT articles in round 5.
  • Sammi Brie wins the good article reviewer prize, for 71 GARs overall.
  • Sammi Brie wins the Did you know prize, for 30 DYKs in round 3 and 106 overall.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 wins the In the news prize, for 106 ITNs in round 5 and 289 overall.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January and possible changes to the rules and scoring are being discussed on the discussion page. You are invited to sign up to take part in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to have a good turnout for the 2023 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners and finalists, and thank all participants for their involvement! Newsletter question

Hi Meegs, happy new year! Thanks for the shoutout on the lichen newsletter. I was wondering if I could pick your brain on the making and sending of newsletters - my main work is with the Unreferenced Articles project (redheaded stepchild of WP, or so it seems) and I'm trying to drum up activity with current and potential volunteers. I really like the layout of the lichen newsletter and was wondering if you have a template for making it, adding pertinent news, the archive, sending it automatically to talk pages, etc. This project is near and dear to my heart and I'm trying to revitalize it as best I can. Thanks for any help. Kazamzam (talk) 15:06, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi Kazamzam. Happy New Year to you too! I don't have a template; I just clear out the previous month's info, change the header color and picture to one of several options and type in any new material. It's pretty easy to do! I'm happy to help tweak anything you're not sure how to do. I still want to make a few additions (like adding previous issue/next issue buttons). With such a small task force, I just hand "deliver" the newsletter. But when I used to do one for the WP:BIRDS project (which is much bigger), I used one of the many newsletter delivering bots which have been programmed. They're easy to find. DYK for Amazonotrema

On 10 January 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Amazonotrema, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that while most lichens that grow on plants live on the surface, the sole species in Amazonotrema grows partially among the cells of the tree bark on which it lives? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Amazonotrema. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Amazonotrema), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

October lichen task force newsletter

SYMBIOSIS: The lichen task force newsletter — October 2022
A look at what we've accomplished, working together

As a subset of WP:FUNGI, the lichen task force is working to improve coverage of the world's lichens – unique organisms composed of one or more fungal partners with one or more photosynthetic partners. A growing body of evidence suggests that some of the roughly 1000 secondary metabolites produced by various lichens may prove instrumental in our ongoing battle against harmful pathogens. Want to learn more? Join us!

Articles of note

Esculenta has nominated two articles for GA:

Solorina crocea
  • Verrucariaceae – a family of mostly lichenized fungi found primarily on rocks and soil in the Northern Hemisphere
  • Solorina crocea – also known as "orange chocolate chip lichen", this was one of the first lichen species to be formally scientifically described

Project news

It's been another busy month for the task force. Among the accomplishments:

  • We've tagged another 700 articles, categories and templates as being under the purview of the task force.
  • Importance levels have now been set for nearly all of the task force's articles.
  • Thousands of articles have been tagged with lichen class/order/genus/species categories as appropriate.
  • Work has continued on converting those articles which still using old "taxobox" templates to the newer automatic taxobox and speciesbox templates. There are now fewer than 95 left to modify.
  • MerielGJones has created articles for a number of important lichenologists, including James D. Lawrey, Thomas George Allan Green, Pier Luigi Nimis, Hannes Hertel, Ludger Kappen, and Christian Leuckert. Esculenta added one for Georges Clauzade.
  • Dozens of articles have been created for genera and species of lichen and lichenicolous fungi.
  • The outline of lichens is now almost completely referenced.
  • Work has continued on the Draft:Glossary of lichen terms, which will hopefully be ready to move into main space within the month.
Lichen news
  • A recent study strongly suggests that industrial forestry, along with the introduction of nitrogen, is the main cause of lichen declines in Norway spruce forests. This decline has resulted in "cascading effects on biodiversity and function of boreal forest canopies", according to the study's authors.

February lichen task force newsletter

SYMBIOSIS: The lichen task force newsletter — February 2023
A look at what we've accomplished, working together

Did you know that lichens can grow on glass, plastic and metals, as well as their more typical wood, stone, leaf and dirt substrates? Did you know that scientists have done experiments on the International Space Station where lichens have been exposed to space for weeks at a time — enduring the vacuum, solar radiation, and frigid temperatures outside of the station — and that these lichens have then photosynthesized normally when returned to earth? Did you know that lichens cover more than 7 percent of the earth's surface, and that some live permanently submerged underwater? Join us to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of these amazing organisms. There's plenty to write about!

WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! May 2023 lichen task force newsletter

SYMBIOSIS: The Lichen task force newsletter — May 2023
A look at what we've accomplished, working together

It's been a few months since the last newsletter, primarily because there hasn't been much to report! We continue to make slow progress on turning red links to blue in the outline of lichens, mostly through the addition of articles about lichen taxa. The glossary of lichen terms has also continued to grow, with dozens of definitions added over the past few months. However, given that there are more than 1000 lichen genera (we have articles on just under 900 of them), and more than 20,000 lichen species (90% of which have no article yet), there's plenty more to write about. All hands on deck!

Articles of note

New GA article:

Caloplaca flavescens – one of the many lichen species with no article as of 1 May
Project news
  • With the upgrade of Verrucariaceae back in late February, we have another GA for the project, but there have been no GA or DYK additions since then.
  • MerielGJones continues to expand our coverage of lichenologists, with articles about Léon Vouaux and Kenneth Andrew Kershaw added since the last newsletter.
  • The number of articles on our cleanup listing has grown, with 4% of the task force's articles showing some sort of issue. These range from missing or unreliable sources to dead external links and orphaned articles. Some of these could probably be sorted relatively quickly, if you're looking for a fast way to help the project improve its coverage.

WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, Chicago PCN02WPS, and London AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

‘Lyken’ v incorrect ‘Litchen’

Dear MeegsC Re. your reversion of my edit on the Lichen page with the comment to the effect that ‘Just because you don’t pronounce it ‘litchen’ doesn’t make it incorrect!’ I maintain it IS incorrect because it doesn’t properly reflect the derivation from Greek which you and your fellow lichen fans have made plain on the page. I’m not generally a fan of American English, but in this instance I support wholeheartedly the American pronunciation ‘lyken’ as the only correct one. Flobbadob (talk) 10:32, 2 May 2023 (UTC)Flobbadob

And yet, Flobbadob, the Cambridge dictionary clearly shows that "litchen" is an acceptable pronunciation. We at Wikipedia are not arbitrators. If reliable sources say something, we report it neutrally. We don't proclaim it is "incorrect". I myself pronounce it 'lyken' – not that it really matters... MeegsC (talk) 10:39, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

And yet, MeegsC, I can’t help feeling that the Cambridge dictionary should know better…although, as you say, quite rightly, it counts as a reliable source. I know it doesn’t matter in any world-shaking sense : it’s just symptomatic of the inevitable evolution of language. I just don’t happen to like many of the ways in which English is evolving - the simplification (Americans would say ‘dumbing-down’), the loss of subtlety and nuance, the relentless Americanising of our mother tongue. I won’t bang on any further to the point of becoming even more of a bore. Good luck with your lichen research ( or as most people now insist on saying ‘RE-search’…)Flobbadob (talk) 13:06, 2 May 2023 (UTC) Just listened to the voice file on your Cambridge dictionary link. So ‘litchen’ is now the OFFICIAL U.K. pronunciation of the word, no less. God help us…Flobbadob (talk) 13:15, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

Outline of lichens, and more

Hi Meegs,

Featured what?

Something interesting popped up in September in the article alerts section at the WikiProject Outlines page.

What happened with this: Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Outline of lichens/archive1?
Is it supposed to be an archive page?
Is its candidacy still active?

WikiProject page

By the way, I've been updating/upgrading the WikiProject page. Feel free to take a look and make improvements.

Feedback requested

A user posted Wikipedia talk:Outlines#Deprecation of outlines, requesting feedback on whether or not he should make a proposal to get rid of outlines. You are obviously in tune with outlines, and perhaps you could explain there why they should or should not exist.

Could you check these out?

Now that you have some perspective on what a featured list outline should look like, I've been wondering if you would be willing to take a look at these, and, if you think they would make good candidates for FL status, maybe you could talk to the main editor about them?

Outline of underwater diving
Outline of underwater divers

Thank you

Due to the efforts of editors like you, there are over 900 outlines now, though not all of them are titled "Outline of", and not all of them are listed at Wikipedia:Contents/Outlines (yet).

Keep up the good work, and keep in touch.    — The Transhumanist   14:48, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi Transhumanist. Yes, the FL for Outline of lichens is still live. I've been in the field for a month, so still have a few loose ends to tie up. I'm not sure it has enough reviews to pass the process though, so not sure what will happen next. But, regardless, it's always good to get a few more eyeballs on something! Once I start to get caught up on some "real world" paperwork (buried and way behind at the moment), I'll try to take a look at the outlines you've linked to in order to give my feedback. I looked at them when setting up the lichens outline, and was impressed. The big issue I can see right off the bat is the complete lack of references. That would currently make them a nonstarter in the FL process, but I imagine the Peter Southwood has access to most of the references he'd need to fix that. MeegsC (talk) 16:10, 9 October 2023 (UTC)

We also have a template for creating outlines, called Template:Outline generator, which helps get outlines started. The first argument is the subject uncapitalized, and the second argument is the subject capitalized. If provided, those are inserted into the outline automatically. The syntax looks like this:

{{subst:Outline generator|subject|Subject}}.

It is best to avoid Draft space, because any draft that goes 6 months with no editing becomes subject to deletion.

Keep up the good work. I look forward to reading any future outlines you create.

Teloschistes flavicans – the type species of the type genus of the family Teloschistaceae

Project news
  • Esculenta has been on a tear recently and now has six articles under consideration for good article status: Anaptychia ciliaris, Buellia frigida, Chrysothrix chlorina, Placidium arboreum, Pulchrocladia retipora, and Punctelia.
  • Esculenta has also submitted Teloschistaceae (which received its GA star in September) for consideration as a featured article.
  • We now have articles about two additional noted lichenologists: Vitus Grummann and Oscar Klement.
  • "Year of description" categories have been added to all genus and species articles.
  • The number of genus and species articles continues to grow. We now have 935 articles about lichen genera and more than 2100 (including redirects) about lichen species.
  • It's not all good news: The number of articles on our cleanup listing has also grown, with 5% of the task force's articles showing some sort of potential issue. These range from missing or unreliable sources to dead external links and orphaned articles. Some of these could probably be sorted relatively quickly, if you're looking for a fast way to help the project improve the quality of its coverage.
Newsletter challenge

The "Phytochemistry" section in our Stereocaulon ramulosum is convoluted and virtually unreadable – and has had a "clarification needed" tag since July of 2022. The editor who whips this short section into shape (and the one who cleans up the associated references) will get public kudos in the next newsletter.

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay

Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

Cephalodium

Nice work on improving this important article! I hope you are planning on expanding it even more, perhaps to GA? Let me know if you'd like at some point to have a look at my own sources to see if there's more stuff that could be added. I'm working on a similar expansion to isidium; it's in my sandbox here, but it's still in a fairly crappy state. Perhaps you'd be amenable to peer-reviewing it later when it's ready before a GA submission? Esculenta (talk) 18:18, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

@Esculenta: Absolutely! I'm working on improving the lichen morphology article (see my sandbox here) and didn't want to be linking to stubs. I looked around to see what I could find relating to cephalodia and found all sorts of cool things. I'm hoping to get it to GA at some point, and will probably then move on to work on our cyanolichen article. And I'd be happy to peer-review isidium (which was next on my list!) if you wouldn't mind doing the same for cephalodia. ;) MeegsC (talk) 18:23, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:27, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

December lichen task force newsletter

SYMBIOSIS: The lichen task force newsletter — December 2023
A look at what we've accomplished, working together

As 2023 draws to a close, we can look back with more than a modicum of pride on the progress we've made this year. We've added a few stars to our showcase with our first featured list and a handful of new good articles, created a plethora of new taxa articles, and added biographies for more than a dozen important lichenologists. We've resolved dozens of outstanding "cleanup" issues, and begun to polish some existing articles about various lichen structures. All in all, it's been a fairly productive year! Here's hoping that the coming holidays are happy ones, whichever you choose to celebrate.

Articles of note

New good articles:

Placidium arboreum, also known as "tree stipplescale"
Project news
Newsletter challenge

Kazamzam cleaned up the references for our Stereocaulon ramulosum article to meet part of the challenge issued in the last newletter. Unfortunately, the Phytochemistry section of that article is still a mess, just in case anybody feels motivated to complete the rest of the challenge!

This month, we're looking for someone to take a look at the Malmidea article, which hasn't been updated since 2020. Since then, the number of species assigned to the genus has grown from the 52 listed in our article to the 68 listed by Species Fungorum (via the Catalogue of Life). The editor who updates the list will receive public kudos in the next newsletter.

Family

Hi Meegs, just wanted to let you know that "The Examplaceae are ..." is as correct as saying "Examplaceae is ...". The -aceae ending implies a plural form and so it's ok to use it like a plural in a sentence. There was a discussion about this in ToL talk some years ago (I've read all the archived talk at some point); I could try to hunt it down if you're not convinced. Found it here, and discussed here: WP:PLANTS/TAXONNUMBER Esculenta (talk) 00:00, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

Okay! Just sounds weird to me – since it's basically saying "the family are" – but if it's agreed upon, I guess that's fine. MeegsC (talk) 09:55, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
