Help with Template:NCAA Men's Basketball All-Americans

MT, can you work your magic and fix the spacing issues on Template:NCAA Men's Basketball All-Americans? I've tried my best but I don't know how to set this navbox up so that 1905 through 1909 appear exactly in the correct spots, as well as 1929 appearing at the end of the row. I don't know coding and since User:LOL stopped editing six months ago I was hoping you could fix this. Thanks! Jrcla2 (talk) 03:55, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Well, I'm not familiar with hlist, but I'll try to figure out how. The problem is that I don't know how many spaces needed to replace one bullet point (•), it's larger than 3 spaces and smaller than 4 spaces. Here's a temporary solution but the excessive bullets look weird. Anyway, do you know any similar templates that uses hlist as well? — MT (talk) 05:07, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Do you see any difference between this and this? I'm using two computers. The problem is, when I use my home computer, in the earlier version the years are still not aligned, therefore I changed the bullet format. I have no idea what caused this, and now I'm not sure that the years will be aligned in every computer. FYI, both version looks okay to me when I'm using my laptop with Windows Vista and Firefox or Chrome. Thanks for the message. I did notice that Elson was missing from the NBA.com players list a couple days ago, but he's there again. Your theory about waiving him and re-signing him does make sense; the Heat have done that with Mickell Gladness.

Awards and honors in NBA infoboxes

MT, I saw where you added a number of awards and honors to Charles Jenkins (basketball). It was the consensus of WP:NBA (with collaboration from WP:CBBALL) that only awards or honors which appear on Template:College Basketball Awards and which have their own articles are regarded as worthy enough to be included in an NBA player's infobox (see here for discussion). I've removed, for instance, Jenkins' three-time All-CAA First Team honors and his 2-time honorable mention AP All-America selections. Thanks! Jrcla2 (talk) 17:22, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I remember that the discussion, but I believe consensus can change. Ever since that discussion, I started to think that Bagumba has a point. We shouldn't ignore a player's accomplishments during college even though the player may not be successful in professional level. There has been a lot of inconsistencies in college awards in the infobox, for example, see Jimmer Fredette (all awards, honors and records in the infobox) and Tyler Hansbrough (no college awards at all). I started to cleanup some players' awards section and then I found out that an article about All-Pac-10 Conference Team exists. Since then, I started to keep and add All-Conference Teams and then I get carried on and adding a lot of stuffs in the infobox. I might've gone overboard with AP Honorable Mention and All-Tournament Teams, but I believe an All-Conference Team and All-American (non-consensus) are quite an accomplishment that could be kept in the infobox. Do you think these awards are worth keeping? If so, perhaps I should start a discussion for a new consensus, perhaps a more detailed one. — MT (talk) 17:41, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

I know consensus can change, I just think it's a really slippery slope when one starts adding awards and honors that don't even have corresponding articles. I'm not even certain that the All-Pac 12 Conference Teams article should exist, but that's a different debate altogether. One of the guidelines of navboxes is that there should be a corresponding article to its existence, which I feel is a good prerequisite for the concept of infobox awards. If not, it too easily becomes a slippery slope of fanboys going in and editing their favorites players' articles to say that "John Smith was a 4th Team All-American by KenoshaTimes.com." When an editor adds a non-notable honor/award and it gets reverted, we can point to the consensus already in place to say 'that's why it got reverted.' There was a later discussion at Template_talk:Infobox_basketball_biography#College.2FHS_awards, along with guidelines for highlights at {{Infobox basketball biography}}. Perhaps I'm biased about All-Pac-12 being the article creator, but there are enough sources that cover it year in and year out that I'd be surprised if did not meet WP:LISTN. I've reverted some of MT's edits that removed mention of All-Pac-12.—Bagumba (talk) 07:24, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm an editor that likes consistencies very much, therefore if All-Pac-12 as an All-Conference awards is listed in some players, I'd like to list every All-Conference Team because they are somewhat equal achievements. However, I don't have a strong opinion on All-Conference awards. If there is anything I would like to argue for inclusion are individual All-Americans Selections (non-consensus), such as the one in Charles Jenkins article. Sporting News All-Americans is one of the four teams used to select consensus teams and therefore I believe it is notable that they ranks Jenkins as one of the best 15 players nationally in 2011. I believe this supersedes Jenkins' conference player of the year award win as the award is only for the best in its conference. — MT (talk) 08:05, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

I can agree with not listing awards that will never have standalone articles, but that must be distinguished from articles that don't currently exist but should be created. There should be enough sources to satisfy LISTN for each Div I All-Conference team. The prior consensus was that college awards be listed as long as it didn't overwhelm the infobox. A non-consensus All-American should be listed if a player has few accomplishments, which was previously agreed to be < 5 NBA highlights. IMO it is not helpful to the reader if run-of-the-mill pro players do not have their college awards highlighted. Florida Gators in the NBA

Martin, kudos on the creation of the new Gators in the NBA article. It is an excellent list article. The existence of the new article creates a problem, however. The older article, which includes both NBA and WNBA players, duplicates two-thirds of the content of the new article. This is contrary to Wikipedia policy, and also causes duplication/structural/relational problems within the larger family of Florida Gators sports articles, lists and navboxes. My initial thoughts are either (1) the two articles need to be merged to a single article and a common format, or (2) the older article needs to be retasked to "Florida Gators in the WNBA." I wanted to solicit your thoughts before I slapped a "merge" template on the two articles. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 16:50, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks! In my opinion, it's better to retask the old article to Gators in the WNBA. I could re-write the WNBA list to a similar format with NBA list. Martin, I think that's probably the best solution. If you have time to drop the WNBA Gators into the same format you used for the NBA Gators, and retask the old article as a WNBA-only list, I would be grateful. It might otherwise be a couple of weeks before I can focus on it. Obviously, the retasked article will need to be moved/renamed. Also, I hope you won't mind if I add "see also" sections and other formatting features that are common to all Florida Gators articles . . . . It's been a long process to upgrade this family of articles over time, and several of the articles are still works in progress. The men's and women's basketball articles are both due for major rewrites and upgrades, including comprehensive program histories and proper footnote sourcing per WP:V and WP:RS. 2011 NBA Draft Lottery Winner

Hey, I get that it's explained in the notes section but to say Cleveland won the lottery is misleading. The L.A Clippers were the ones that technically won even though they had the 8th best chance at getting the pick. Putting Cleveland alone there makes it seem as if they won with the second best chance. It is the Clippers combination which won, which was then transferred to Cleveland. I'll highlight him and any other players as active if they sign another NBA contract. I just feel those NBA awards lists were poorly maintained with plenty of inactive players (some even have formally retired and became coaches i.e. Tracy McGrady, Rasheed Wallace), but were still listed as "active players". 2014 NBA draft

Martin - if you feel strongly about "ungreying" names then do so. I guess I don't see it as CRYSTAL or OR if there is no chance they will be active on an NBA roster on opening night (ie - signed a contract for the upcoming season elsewhere or injured for months). These would be greyed during the first week of the season anyway and the shading removed once they appear in a game at some point in the future. But I'm not that hard over on it.
