WP Horse racing

Hey, saw all the great work you've been doing on the race horse articles, and just a couple tips, as you seem to be doing a lot of fantastic work for a new user. First off, consider this an invitation to join WP:WikiProject Horse racing if you have not already done so. It's a good group of folks. Second, as you edit articles, be careful what you replace; for example, many horse names are red linked, and it's best not to unlink them (with exceptions, like a totally non-notable horse that shows up once or twice in all of wkipedia, even then, sometimes a redirect to a more famous ancestor or descendant is useful); often an article on that horse gets created eventually, and if the horse is already wikilinked it saves a LOT of time linking and de-orphaning a new article later on. Also, there is not a need to go to great lengths to designate races as G1, G2, etc. if the race itself has an article. Generally if the horse is notable enough for a WP article, it is because it won G1 races. See, as an example, the changes I made at Caro (horse) to give you and idea. Photos

Nice images of racehorses. You took them all? Wow! Was wondering if you might be able to crop and re-upload the ones of Princess of Sylmar and Beholder (horse) to eliminate all the extra people? That is so fantastic! To the extent that you can just upload with what identifying info you can provide (track, year and then where possible, horse/jockey/trainer), the rest of the WP Horse racing crew can probably help pop stuff in. Most of our articles lack photos, and particularly for living stallions now standing at stud (and mares or geldings too, actually) who were active circa 2000-2010 or so ( and even more so in the 1990s, but those are probably even more difficult to locate). If a horse is dead, we can use many copyrighted images with a "fair use" rationale, but not for the living ones. (i.e. we have fair use images for Seattle Slew but had to use properly licensed ones for Orb (horse) or Tiznow, as examples). And of course, any of people are also great! Ooh, I didn't think of the sire photos, not to mention pics I took at Old Friends last year. More stuff to go through! Re fair use, what about a picture of a painting? There's an adorable one out there of La Troienne with her foals that I'd love to add to her page http://www.themarylandequestrian.com/?p=2408 has a b&w version of the photo plus details about the painter. Reference tips

Thought I'd better pop by and give you a couple tips on creating better-formatted references. Although there are several ways to do citation that's "legal" as far as sourcing goes, there are styles that are preferred and it works best if you can use the citation templates: To get there, first, in the edit window, there is a link that says "cite" it brings up a pull-down menu labeled "Templates" which allows you to do full citations that are properly formatted by just entering the data (and if you click on the little magnifying glass, some web sites will even propagate the data automatically once you enter a URL, ISBN number or doi number). The other way to do fast citation templates is with reFill (https://tools.wmflabs.org/refill/ ) ReFill isn't perfect, but it can be a super time-saver. I'll go fix up LaTroienne and you can see what I did (stealing formatting from other articles is often the easiest way to figure it out) Montanabw^(talk) 08:56, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

OK, I'm done. I think I restored all the sources you added in the right spots, and I hope my rearranging and text editing improved the article. On these, I always tell people that if I didn't help, "toss what sucks" and if I messed up anything big time, that's what {{trout}} is for! I really like the pedigree analysis and the inbreeding sections. This article is actually close to being good article quality and I'd be glad to help you take it through that gauntlet. Thanks so much. I appreciate the reorganization - I've been struggling to eliminate duplicated info but it hasn't always worked. Still have to work on sources for things like that first para in the background section (which someone else wrote). I know its all true, but darned if I can find a source that says it all - well, I'm sure its all in Muriel Lennox's book but I can't find my copy. Secretariat at GAN

Well, I put up Secretariat for Good article. Once we get a reviewer, it could be a real gauntlet to run, but I have done it a few times before, so I'm willing to take the brunt of the work. Basically, if a reviewer flags a sourcing issue, we both may need to scramble the jet fighters to find better sources, and I also am fretting a little about your screenshots surviving the fair use rules, but I'm cautiously optimistic. Quotations

Just a heads up to be careful with quotations. They can get flagged by the copyright violation tool and especially if quoted with the same breaks as in the source article.. (i.e, if the article states, "it was a big deal," he said, "I'm really happy." then best to put it here as "it was a big deal, I'm really happy," he said.) A few are good, a lot can become a problem. I'm thinking they are getting to be a bit much in the Dale Romans article... just a light shave and a trim... think of quotes as a goatee...(LOL) Montanabw^(talk) 19:48, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. I'm working on Little Mike now and there are a lot of quotes because his connections said a lot of interesting things about him, but it can get to be too much. Yay for Little Mike! The big thing to avoid is a drive-by copyvio tagger. I got slapped pretty bad for too much close paraphrasing on one of my earliest articles (Equine nutrition) but ultimately got it to GA. There's also an automated bot that also goes around and flags articles if they seem to have too much copypaste. Some folks slap on the big scary lock-it-down tag without paying attention to the actual article. So far you are fine, but just beware the bot... Montanabw^(talk) 00:57, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Little Mike pics

The same video that I pulled screenshots off for the Wise Dan article has images of Little Mike at about 2:47. The quality is really poor, but a poor image beats nothing. The link is here, and you can copy the template I used for the Wise Dan screenshot here. I pulled a few screenshots and will try to get an image up in the next few days, but they will be super-fuzzy. If you have editing software that can clean up cell phone video and make them any better, my feelings absolutely will not be hurt -- all I have is iPhoto! (I love FranceSireTV, the commentators are insane and they clearly have a lot of fun at their job. Stover

I answered your images question at my talk. I think the Stover article is pretty much good to go; I made a few fiddly tweaks, put in a few hidden text comments for additional improvements, and suggested you use the {{cite book}} template (which can be accessed in the pull-down "templates" window in the editing window if you haven't tried that trick yet). All that aside, none of it is required, and I'd feel comfortable moving it into mainspace now or at any time you say "go" -- you can move it yourself, but if you want me to do the move (I've got the autopatrolled right, so it will not be flagged by WP:NPP if I do it (wink).) I went to the Jim Dandy this year as the crowds at the Travers last year were kind of overwhelming - not as much stamina for standing at the rail as I used to have! Was wondering if I should add pics to more of the race articles. Took a lot of pretty pictures but not sure which ones are needed. Wish I had a pic of Arrogate as his face is so cool with the dark grey and light.

I'd say if you have appropriate images, go for it. Your shots of Dale Romans and Beholder (horse) were fantastically helpful. We don't have photos for people like Chad Brown and others, plus some of the jockey photos are iffy quality. Saratoga Racecourse and other highlights of the area would benefit too. On a somewhat related note, was wondering if you could give your opinion on a few things:

• In Breeders' Cup Challenge, was wondering if we should create yearly articles showing the horses who won the respective races (especially since the races involved in the series often change each year). Might help for the yearly main Breeders' Cup article. I don't mind doing the work, just wonder if it would be of use.
• In Breeders' Cup Classic (and the other races for that matter), was wondering if we shouldn't put in more text about the history, stand out performances. Or is it generally assumed this will go in the article on the winner? Again, I don't mind doing the work if its useful.
• in National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, I added in the years that the horses raced, since at least a third of the members were inducted by historical review long after they had retired. What do you think about adding numbers of races, number of wins, and/or earnings as well. All the info is on their site, and I just happen to have acquired the guide book that shows the data, making it easy to enter. Was comparing it to the Baseball HoF List showing data like ERA and what-not.

LOL! My take is that

• we are having a tough time keeping the Road to the Kentucky Derby articles going 2016 Road to the Kentucky Derby, etc...) but if you want to make the breeders' cup challenge list into an overview article and then do annual lists, once you've created the templates and done the past ones, it probably won't be too daunting for others to help in the future...
• I'd favor improving the article. We should, in theory put the BCC and the Triple Crown races on the track to be GA quality even if we don't nominate them. I wouldn't bloat the main article with a play by play, as there are articles such as 2015 Breeders' Cup that can cover the annual highlights, but I do think there's room for improvement. • I'd do the HOF as a chart. That said, charts are a pain in the (formatting) ass. But worth it for how they look when done (I know whereof I speak, see List of Bureau of Land Management Herd Management Areas, which has over 270 items, it was a huge challenge and I worked on it for over a year...).

Sandboxing

I like to "sandbox" my articles so they are halfway together before going live. While you can do this in draft space, or you can use the "sandbox" link on your menu bar, I like to create an article-specific sandbox, so when it's ready to go live, the article history (including any contributors besides you) goes with it. I create a link like this: User:Jlvsclrk/Susan Stover, click on it, create the page, and away you go. When you move it to mainspace, you can change the title if you need to (if Susan Stover is taken, for example). Then you can put a speedy delete tag on the sandbox so you don't wind up with 10,000 of them (or ping me to move it without a redirect, which also blanks it -- I have pagemover tools). Dropping in because Montanabw doesn't seem to be online; if you blank any page in userspace, an admin will usually delete it. I think there are also templates specifically for deletion of your own contribs, but I'm not sure.

By the way, I saw where somebody was fussing at you for your latest DYK, saying it was too old. I've done several DYKs on articles that I sandboxed and then moved to mainspace; the trick seems to be to put the status as new/mainspace, and use the date that you moved it to mainspace rather than the day you created the draft. As long as it has been in mainspace less than 7 days, it's new for DYK purposes. I'm not Tigerboy, but if you look at WP:NHORSERACING, I think that being a Grade I winner meets the threshold of notability. He's little bit on the line, but maybe start it in a sandbox with his win statistics. On one hand, we've gotten some whines about how we have great articles on recent winners and not nearly as good of coverage on historic greats, but on the other hand, every cricket player who ever played a single season of pro ball in Manchester seems to get their own article, so my take is "proceed until apprehended." Jose Ortiz would be my next priority since he was nominated for the Eclipse last year and is getting a lot of good mounts this year. Can use a lot of the same sources as Irad, his brother. As for the trainers, none of the redlinks is notable yet – all smaller trainers waiting for their big break. Looks like it might be a Pletcher year, though his record in the Derby is horrific so I'm not holding my breath. Steve Haskin is really tearing his hair out trying to figure out this year's crop! Thanks montanabw. I created the article as Jose Ortiz (jockey) since none of my sources shown the accent on the e, even if we all know it should be there. I fixed the pages that were being redirected to the basketball player, who has an amazing number of good links to his page due to a long career and lots of Olympic appearances. Might be more trouble than its worth to change him, though eventually I expect the jockey will outstrip him in terms of links. He's really starting to get some good horses now! Hi there! I'm going to Monmouth Park for the Haskell this year so expect to see a few of the Derby horses - Irish War Cry for sure. For horseracing photos, I usually stand at the rail so I don't have to zoom too much, and use shutter priority because the blur is noticeable otherwise. I usually cheat and use my camera's sports setting (the running man if you've got a Nikon). It tends to wash out color a bit so I usually do a color correction. When I do use manual settings, it depends on the time of day and the amount of zoom I'm using with my telephoto lens - could be 1/1000 at noon for a close up subject, down to 1/25 by twilight for the horses at the head of the stretch when I'm at full zoom. I usually try to keep the shutter speed in the middle of that range (eg 1/125 during the Beholder/Songbird race sequence, and the real secret is to track the motion properly. Be careful with the accusation of vandalism

Vandalism has a particular definition on Wikipedia. Misusing it does a lot of harm. I was disambiguating the name of a horse, though it looks like the name was removed. That's fine if it's correct, but be careful with the accusations.

Hi Jlvsclrk, I really appreciate all the work that has gone into the Northern Dancer page but I think it is important to be consistent. There are horses in the chart like US Navy Flag that have NOT won any of the included races. Hi, I didn't create the category and tend to agree its almost redundant now because ND is in a VERY high percentage of modern pedigrees (especially Europe and Australia). OTOH, it is kinda cool to see the impact of "the greatest Canadian". But I'll go with the consensus. The NBC Navbox is usually minimized and I can't think that anyone would look there to find links to the other races. But I see I am going to lose this argument so will be quiet from now on. In completing the Hollywood Derby winners' table I reverted your change from 1974 back to 1973 as the year of the first graded stakes. I think you, as many of us did, thought TOBA's statement saying that as a result of their work The Blood-Horse first published a list of Graded stakes on January 1, 1974" meant that was the first year. [4] They confused things even more when then stated the European Pattern race system was implemented in 1972. While 1974 was the first U.S. list, it was based on the then completed grading done throughout 1973 when the TOBA committee graded all stakes after each prospective race was run. By year end they had their work complete and could then provide a list to each track owner of the 1973 results plus a list for the ensuing year of 1974. They gave it to the media, a great many of which basically ignored it for several ears. Same procedure for Europe who did their one-by-one grading in 1971 and were then able to publish their full list in advance for the 1972 year. Back in 2011 Churchill Downs Incorporated published on their Kentuckyderby.com site an excellent history of their graded stakes, each in a separate PDF format and did so through 2016. It includes the applicable Grade as per the one at this link. [5] In 2013 they also did a single PDF with all of the Churchill Downs stakes plus numerous others which were most often ones leading up to the Derby. I downloaded all of the aforementioned individual PDFs and the large single one. As far as I could tell, they are now all just about gone from the Web. Great info, Stretchrunner. I knew that they had to have evaluated the races in 1973 in order to publish grades in 1974 but it's hard to find sources that actually show the numbers. I'm especially reluctant to talk about 1973 because it raises the question of how many G1s Secretariat won and god only knows how they graded the Marlboro Cup for example. Thanks. Yesterday I was looking for refs on Indian Maid and found another C.D. PDF for the Falls City H. through 2015. It was one of the ones given a grade in 1973. In case you want to download it, here it is: [6]. I fully agree with your comments. Because the Marlboro Cup was not run before '73 it would not have been given a grade until 1975. Nonetheless, I think it was one of the great (top 20 or so) races & performances in history. BTW, I'm still pissed off that Turcotte wasn't allowed to ride in Secretariat's last race. That would be unheard of today. Of course, I have always felt a little sorry for Riva Ridge; if only Pimlico hadn't been muddy! As such, I wish grading would have been implemented a dozen years earlier and would therefore show up in today's records back to at least 1963-64. It is a mystery why Equibase stopped at '76 but perhaps their records 45 years ago and earlier are incomplete. I do admire their efforts to always get all the fact rights so maybe they chose to only publish where they knew everything would be complete and accurate. Thanks again. Just found this on origin - I never knew about the "Match Race" idea.

"Prior to the Whitney, the Philip Morris Corporation proposed a $250,000 match race between Secretariat and his stablemate Riva Ridge, winner of the previous year’s Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes who had set a world record for 1 3/16 miles in the Brooklyn Handicap on July 4. Yes, and then both Riva Ridge and Secretariat lost races within a few days of each other and they had to start scrambling! I always wondered if I should expand the section on the Cup to give more of the background (plus amplify that Riva Ridge was also a top notch runner). Pat Day page

Please undelete the stakes wins of Pat Day you removed. This was painstakenly added over the years by dedicated research by numerous editors and is very important in understanding the riding history of Pat Day. For example, I noticed his five Louisiana Derby wins were removed and in addition all of these stakes wins are now hidden.

Also please be aware that there is a person dedicated to mercilessly attacking the reputation of Pat Day and has had more than half a dozen accounts banned due to his use of sockpuppetry to bludgeon the Pat Day page. Hello, I did this to be consistent with the way we've done other major trainers and jockeys like Bob Baffert. The standard is to show Grade I wins in the infobox. When you've got someone with as many wins as Day, even just sticking to Grade I can overwhelm users so we default to hiding most of it. This allows the user to focus on the classics, breeders' cup, and they can then expand the section to see the rest if they're interested. That does raise the style issue of whether we should put this list in the body of the article rather than the Infobox. In the US, we use the infobox but the European articles put more in the body. See for example Lester Piggott. Also, what do you think of adding all the times he's finished in the top three in the Triple Crown races instead of just the times he won? Again, see Bob Baffert for how this might look.

Note that for every race that I removed because it wasn't Grade I, I added at least one that was. The Louisiana Derby was only Grade III throughout the period of time he rode in it, and none of the winners he rode in it is particularly distinguished. By contrast, the old list missed some of the most important fixtures on the racing calendar like the Champagne and Travers which he won with horses like Easy Goer.

The truth is that you, Jlvsclrk, had to extensively edit and remove the blatant errors and hyperbole of the blocked NatroneDay ( aka 2601:6C3:4081:A10:9D29:1D47:575C:D9BD, plus 2601:6C3:4081:A10:880F:BE7D:110A:5D64, 2601:6C3:4081:A10:FDF6:F268:862F:3E64, 2601:6C3:4081:A10:382C:1DB0:F90D:B67, 71.215.212.25, 71.215.18.168 ); after I pointed out that if an objective administrator would merely take a few moments to read this article and inline citations, they would clearly see, With all due respect, the last editor who edited this article made blatant errors, made statements (hyperbole) that are not backed up with any citations, and repeated statements/facts (wins, rankings, etc) already in the article. The fact that there are an endless amount of numerous horse racing experts, owners, trainers, etc., cited with reliably sourced citations (and the independent sources contextualizing why it is pertinent and relevant) that have these views/opinions/critiques of the jockey certainly means there is something more to this than pure fabrication - and certainly not a "pre-determined disdain", "mercilessly attacking," or "bludgeoning" the reputation of the article subject. The purpose of the numerous amount of these horse racing experts, owners, trainers, etc., cited with reliably sourced citations being in the article should not be to cast doubt on them (or remove them) just because they are controversial and critical, it is to summarize what these sources are saying. All significant viewpoints should be cited describing other (and all) points of view - that way there is a description of both (or all) points of view. If there are reputable sources contradicting one another and are relatively equal in prominence, describe both points of view - describing the opposing views clearly, drawing on secondary or tertiary sources and all positions included in the article. This is a response for the blocked NatroneDay (aka 2601:6C3:4081:A10:9D29:1D47:575C:D9BD, plus 2601:6C3:4081:A10:880F:BE7D:110A:5D64, 2601:6C3:4081:A10:FDF6:F268:862F:3E64, 2601:6C3:4081:A10:382C:1DB0:F90D:B67, 71.215.212.25, 71.215.18.168 ) , and not for you Jlvsclrk, as you, Jlvsclrk, clearly know all about this and know what you are doing on Wikipedia.

First, I agree with the vast majority of your edits, including the "Major" Stakes wins list only including Grade I wins (or races that were Grade I's when he won them). Just a few other suggestions/possible requests you may have missed for context and perspective. There is a Wikipedia link to Owner Barry Irwin's wiki article; which of you feel the need can add. For perspective and context, Day ranks 6th (tied for 6th all time with Castellano) all-time for Breeders Cup wins behind Smith, Velazquez, Bailey, Dettori, and Gomez. I'd suggest this should be added if you agree; just like his Triple Crown all-time race wins ranking behind Arcaro and Shoemaker, and tied with Stevens, Hartack and Sande, is also in the article for context and perspective. Also, for perspective and context, Day ranks 4th all-time for all-time earnings behind John Velazquez, Smith and Castellano; and Day ranks 4th all-time in wins behind Baze, Pincay Jr., and Shoemaker. I'd suggest these should be added as well for context, if you agree. Furthermore, I do not think it would be even close to being anywhere near "Undue Criticism," or "defamatory," or "libellous," or overly critical to note that Day's most common (along with Patient Pat) and most popular nickname was "Pat Wait All Day," as numerous citations within the article note this. ; plus this sourced citation which seemed to be accidentally removed from the article. The nickname was used Both in a critical way AND a positive way. I quote some of them, "What had frustrated the Coach Wayne Lukas (who at times had replaced Day with Bailey, Stevens and Donna Barton) and everyone who had ever ripped up a ticket on a horse Day (Pat Wait All Day or Patient Pat) rode was Day's deliberate style of waiting and waiting and waiting. Day's record was proof that Day being very patient was successful. But Day often looked too passive, especially when Day's run came up short. When that happened, Day drew the curses of bettors and questions from trainers." Another quote, "Because Day often arrived at the wire too late, he was given an unflattering nickname--Pat (I’ll Wait All) Day." Also the citation cited for the quote, "D. Wayne Lukas said "I'm only as good as Pat Day's rides," doesn't have Lukas quoted as saying that; but I am sure you can find positive quotes from Lukas and others about Day/Day's riding style. The citation quotes Lukas as saying, "Lukas is more critical of famed jockey Pat Day's Derby performance than he is of Timber Country. "Pat spent most of the day steering him instead of riding him," Lukas said. "He was not nearly as aggressive as I wanted." Sorry if my edit that said "introduced in 1973" left anyone confused. Perhaps you can come up with something more clarifying so no one anymore thinks "published in 1974" means in effect. As per the info I gave you previously in my post to your talk page re the Hollywood Derby the grading system was introduced with the first race on January 1, 1973. Because it refers to a U.S. system, I use terminology from Webster's (introduced : to bring into play). I beg to differ. The system was not introduced in 1973. It was being developed at that time and was first published in 1974, exactly as it says in the article and the source. Where did you get that "grades for 1973 were retroactively calculated"? My info comes from two people involved (in addition to track owners, horse owners, breeders, and trainers were briefed in detail) that they graded each race that met the terms for grading and at the end of the year were then able to do comparisons and get answers that could mean changes were needed. To this day I question some grading, both up and down. BTW, if my failing memory serves me, the first time I heard the term used publicly was in the course of the 1978 TC races on TV. However, it really doesn't matter. Another BTW: as a Canuck do you make formal suggestions for the CAN HoF? I was doing some work on two individuals and in my research discovered a U.S. HoF inductee who is recorded as born in the U.S. was actually born in Canada, rode there and served in the Canadian Army during the War.

Per TOBA: "The grading of races began as a TOBA project in 1973, primarily at the request of European authorities anxious that North America have a method, similar to their Pattern race system implemented in 1972, for identifying the highest quality black-type events. In January, 1974, The Blood-Horse published the first list of 330 North American Graded Stakes." So the list published in 1974 is the 1974 grades, which are based on the calculations the committee did during 1973 to measure the quality of the fields. You are correct that the term did not see widespread use until 1978, which per TOBA is when DRF starting using it. Before that, it was only used in sales catalogues. At first I must say that many times cited article from The Vault is full of fictions and fabrications. Article was translated on the Czech website Equichannel and professionals called it a "strange tangle" in the discussion. The article contains fabrications about the running of Kincsems races and other twisted facts. Example: in the cited article from The Vault you can find a picture from Illustrated And Dramatic News with description "there is no evidence that Kincsem was ever touched by a whip". Correct name of newspaper is The Illustrated Sporting And Dramatic News and wrote on page 513: "Madden riding her in rather butcher-like fashion after she had the race well in hand".
In the background of Kincsem is written: "Blaskovich normally sold all his yearlings". It's not true but it cannot be confirmed by citation, it is not written anywhere "Blaskovich not sold all his yearlings". I see from the training lists and results he kept the best horses, from the crop of 1873 he kept Hirnok and Miczi, both classic winners, from crop 1874 Kincsem, etc...

Wikipedia is dependent on its sources, who of course are dependent on their sources. For most horse racing, we have a series of sources that we rely on heavily like Equibase and Equineline (maintained by The Jockey Club), major newspapers and magazines with strong editorial standards, books and websites by acknowledged experts. The Vault is a highly regarded source and the author cites multiple sources in her preamble. Please do not be disparaging. OTOH, any single source should be viewed with skepticism, especially if it contradicts multiple other sources.

For Kincsem's death, did you notice that her death was covered on the first page of the next edition of the paper you referenced? I think it likely that since her death would have been reported just as the edition from March 17 was being printed, they covered it briefly and then amplified it the following week. I continue: I fixed info about Harmat, she is a winner of Hungarian 1000 Guineas, not Oaks. I put links to original results but has been deleted. Cited "German racing expert Philipp Alles" is a fictional person. There is no doubt about Kincsems pedigree. Every thoroughbred is registered in the Stud Book. In A-H Stud Book are registered imports of Cambuscan, Cotswold and The Mermaid. No records about mare Catherina. I put the link to original list of stallions and mares of Mr. Blaskovichs Stud but has been deleted.

Alles is not fictional, he was a noted pedigree expert. Many pedigrees are disputed, and the further back, the more they may disputed. For example, see the pedigree section on Eclipse. Even more recently, horses as important as Native Dancer have pedigree controversies associated with them. Wiki standard is to "teach the controversy" and emphasize the most likely interpretation. It was bulletin of "Jockey Club", publishing fixtures, training lists, race conditions, results, etc... I found many news from true newspapers but I use this because only this two contains a date. If you want I can find links for you.

Great. I would not be at all surprised that it was major news, similar to the death of Man o' War in the United States. Great horses inspire a dedicated following. As for the cat, its interesting the way legends spawn. She is painted with a cat. She travels with a horse named Csalogany. I used the example of Secretariat to demonstrate that online databases cannot be considered authoritative for the whole world. Equibase, Equineline and also DRF or Brisnet are excellent but only for Group/Grade racing, American racing or horses who touched with American racing of breeding. They are far from containing all horses of the world. If you try to find a great horses (Derby winner, Triple Ceown winners, etc...) from countries as Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland, Polen, you won't find most of them but it does not mean that they do not exist or their pedigrees are in doubt. The same is true in the opposite direction. In the online databases of European horse racing authorities you won't find majority of American thoroughbred population beacause is no reason to add all horses to the servers. The conclusion is that the origin cannot be assessed by internet sources from opposite side of the world.

Your example of Eclipse is not very good. He was born before the creation of the General Stud Book, means before the origin of the thoroughbred. Very true about Equibase, and the British equivalents don't go back as far as needed in this case. Equineline is different though in that it incorporates pedigrees from recognized stud books around the world. It is significant that it shows all the other parts of her pedigree, but does not show the female line. When Equineline drops the ball so to speak, we then have to go to primary sources like the American Stud Book. And the point about Eclipse or Native Dancer or whatever is that even the Stud Book can be unreliable. So we note the controversy and go with the most likely interpretation. Corrections of my broken English are very appreciated.

Kincsem was never slow at the break. On sprint distances at two she wins from the front. When she beat Regimentstochter report says Kincsem beat the rival in first 50 strides and won in walk by 10. In Sopron description says, after one failed start the field jumps together nicely, Kincsem popping out of the rest like an arrow and flew away from 15 to 20 lengths. On mile at two she wins waiting behind leader. Later she wins some races "wire to wire", some waiting behind leaders, in St Leger she led the field behind 30 lengths leader who faliled to stay but no report about the slow start.
Grazing on the start looks absurd for me because they are two important men. First was skilled champion jockey Elijah Madden - I can't imagine as he allows Kincsem to grazing in moments before start. Second man was Francis Cavaliero, phantom of the Austro-Hungarian turf. He was stud leader (stud inspector) in stud of Esterhazy, later was in same position in the National Stud Kisber. He picked and bought nearly all important thoroughbreds from GB, he bought both parrents of Waternymph, bought Buccaneer, Cambuscan, mother of Epsom Derby winner Kisber Mineral and many more important horses. Later he was secretary of the Jockey Club, handicapper, steward and also a starter in Austria-Hungary and in Germany. He was known for accuracy and did not hesitate to repeat starts many times until he was satisfied. No way for him to start a race with a disadvantage for any participant.

Some legends and distortions probably occurred when some peoples studying the hungarian newspapers wihout knowing the language. With dictionary in one hand somebody find a name Csalogany, translate some unimportant words and at the end was a new story. Similar is information that Kincsem many times distanced the field. Word distance is many times in race reports and after an inaccurate translation, the phrase "she distanced the field" could have come out but "distance" here means pole or mark 200 meters to finish. Comments she goes away on distance or she has win in hands on distace, means that happend on that point.
Kincsem was pretty straightforward by my research, lika a Winx - win, win, win, win... and nothing too interesting. Some stories are undoubtedly fictional, just the novelists can's expected that so many documents are in Hungarian and Austrian archives and can's expected that the digital age would come and many peoples get the opportunity to find and verify the facts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.52.32.58 (talk) 20:49, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Sortname goes last first then you can put in an optional link name to disambiguate - eg Smith|Mike|Mike E. Smith There's also a parameter you can use to turn off linking completely (eg, for someone who is very unlikely to ever have an article of their own), which is what I did in this case

The story of Kincsem does not begin: "One day on a forgotten farm in the Wild West (or elsewhere) has born Kincsem's dam..." The story begins: "One day in the stud of one of the richest families of the world..." According to some historians, Esterhazys were the richest family of the world that was not on the throne. A legend says that one of them saw on Newmarket gallops a horse that he liked and asked about the price. The owner replied that he would not have enough money. Esterhazy shot the horse down and asked again about the price and replied that there was no thing in the world for which Esterhazy would not have money...

Thoroughbred breeding was just begun in 1850ies, 1860ies in Austria-Hungary. There were only few thoroughbreds, maybe less then 100 and were highly valued and protected. Esterhazys bought most expensive thoroughbreds, employed English trainers, jockeys and staff who knew how to handle thoroughbreds. Also the control and registration of the thoroughbreds was very precise in A-H and Stud Book has been recognized by Weatherbys. It is impossible that from Esterhazy's stud came a horse with dubious origin. It sounds similar like someone is questioning the origin of some horse from Coolmore or Godolphin.

I think the sentence about Equineline is unnecessary there. It looks like a questioning of the A-H Stud Book and original General Stud Book. Anyone who understands IT technologies knows that is not talking about the pedigree of Kincsem, but about the way of administration of database.

I am preparing more significant changes. I want to rewrite the chapter "Background". I want to include a brief history of Austro-Hungarian horseracing in 5-6 sentences, then pure facts about Kincsem. Legends are an integral part of Kincem's story, so I want to create a chapter "Legends" and concentrate them there with some explanations. I found a letter written by Ernő Blaskovich about Kincsem, in which he wrote about some interesting details contradicts to legends.
