WP Horse racing

Hey, saw all the great work you've been doing on the race horse articles, and just a couple tips, as you seem to be doing a lot of fantastic work for a new user. First off, consider this an invitation to join WP:WikiProject Horse racing if you have not already done so. It's a good group of folks. Second, as you edit articles, be careful what you replace; for example, many horse names are red linked, and it's best not to unlink them (with exceptions, like a totally non-notable horse that shows up once or twice in all of wkipedia, even then, sometimes a redirect to a more famous ancestor or descendant is useful); often an article on that horse gets created eventually, and if the horse is already wikilinked it saves a LOT of time linking and de-orphaning a new article later on. Also, there is not a need to go to great lengths to designate races as G1, G2, etc. if the race itself has an article. Generally if the horse is notable enough for a WP article, it is because it won G1 races. See, as an example, the changes I made at Caro (horse) to give you and idea. If you have any questions, feel free to ask here at your talk page, or swing by to mine -- or to WT:WikiProject Horse racing. Welcome! Montanabw(talk) 19:36, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

Photos

Nice images of racehorses. You took them all? Wow! Was wondering if you might be able to crop and re-upload the ones of Princess of Sylmar and Beholder (horse) to eliminate all the extra people? (I might be able to, later, but thought I'd ask you first.) Montanabw(talk) 07:51, 28 May 2016 (UTC) Maybe the one of Dale Romans too. Montanabw(talk) 08:05, 28 May 2016 (UTC)

Great idea, thanks. I've taken a couple of thousand horse racing pictures over the years, so as I'm going through various articles, I'm trying to see if I've got something that works. Jlvsclrk (talk) 01:21, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
That is so fantastic! To the extent that you can just upload with what identifying info you can provide (track, year and then where possible, horse/jockey/trainer), the rest of the WP Horse racing crew can probably help pop stuff in. Most of our articles lack photos, and particularly for living stallions now standing at stud (and mares or geldings too, actually) who were active circa 2000-2010 or so ( and even more so in the 1990s, but those are probably even more difficult to locate). If a horse is dead, we can use many copyrighted images with a "fair use" rationale, but not for the living ones. (i.e. we have fair use images for Seattle Slew but had to use properly licensed ones for Orb (horse) or Tiznow, as examples). And of course, any of people are also great! (Gotta love that one of Romans, LOL!) Montanabw(talk) 02:12, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
Ooh, I didn't think of the sire photos, not to mention pics I took at Old Friends last year. More stuff to go through! Re fair use, what about a picture of a painting? There's an adorable one out there of La Troienne with her foals that I'd love to add to her page http://www.themarylandequestrian.com/?p=2408 has a b&w version of the photo plus details about the painter. But I've never quite grasped fair use when it comes to copies.Jlvsclrk (talk) 06:15, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Reference tips

Thought I'd better pop by and give you a couple tips on creating better-formatted references. Although there are several ways to do citation that's "legal" as far as sourcing goes, there are styles that are preferred and it works best if you can use the citation templates: To get there, first, in the edit window, there is a link that says "cite" it brings up a pull-down menu labeled "Templates" which allows you to do full citations that are properly formatted by just entering the data (and if you click on the little magnifying glass, some web sites will even propagate the data automatically once you enter a URL, ISBN number or doi number). The other way to do fast citation templates is with reFill (https://tools.wmflabs.org/refill/ ) ReFill isn't perfect, but it can be a super time-saver. I'll go fix up LaTroienne and you can see what I did (stealing formatting from other articles is often the easiest way to figure it out) Montanabw(talk) 08:56, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

thanks! I 'learned' by cribbing from the wrong source obviously. sorry about that and thanks again for the time saving info!Jlvsclrk (talk) 20:04, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
No worries, I've been here 10 years and made every mistake that can be made, you are doing better than I did at first! Montanabw(talk) 22:08, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

By the way, if you want a project and one that needs more illustrations, I added one of your images to Old Friends Equine. Montanabw(talk) 22:08, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

I started in on it. Brings back good memories.Jlvsclrk (talk) 04:45, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

More Pics?

We have none for WinStar Farm. Saw the Distorted Humor image, maybe you have more? Montanabw(talk) 02:15, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

I took several of the stallions there but the exterior shots tend to have a person in the middle. Would a panaroma shot of the main building work? Jlvsclrk (talk) 02:37, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
I uploaded some more pictures. May be overkill! Jlvsclrk (talk) 04:22, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Anything is better than nothing, and a panorama is often quite helpful! (See, e.g. Calumet Farm. Montanabw(talk) 05:17, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Hi Montanabw. I just uploaded some photos of AP from the Travers. Wondered if you might like them for the article - its so much fun to read that I didn't want to touch it myself!
We popped one in. Any time you have an idea but hesitate to "touch" an article, feel free to go over to the article's talk page (aka the dark underbelly of wikipedia) and post your idea there! Montanabw(talk) 05:10, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

Possible missions, should you choose to accept

  1. I added some of your images to WinStar Farm. Noticed the article hasn't been updated in quite some time, possibly since 2013.
  2. Speightstown (horse) doesn't have an article, but you have an image, File:Speightstown at Winstar Farms.jpg and he is notable enough for his own article, so if you wanted to try your hand at creating one, I'd be glad to help and could also give a couple other editors a heads up to help you. Montanabw(talk) 04:06, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
Ooh, sounds like fun! I did notice the article was dated.Jlvsclrk (talk) 04:41, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
Another article needs to be created, I think: Irad Ortiz Jr.. You can start it in a "sandbox" - a subpage off your user page, where you can mess with it until it's ready to go (I'd be glad to help, but will be offline a couple days) Just click here User:Jlvsclrk/Irad Ortiz Jr and away you go! Montanabw(talk) 06:04, 12 June 2016 (UTC)
Agreed. I was a little surprised that he didn't already have a page. I'll start on it Monday. I think Frosted deserves a page too after that performance in the Met Mile. Wow, wow, wow.Jlvsclrk (talk) 06:39, 12 June 2016 (UTC)
Hi, Montanabw! Would you set it up as Irad Ortiz or leave the Jr on? Not a huge fan of Jr, since eventually they become Sr. And does everyone writing an article tack it on?
Yup, Angel Cordero, Jr. and not only that, we have huge wiki-dramas over how to punctuate it too... !  :-P LOL Montanabw(talk) 03:06, 19 June 2016 (UTC)
Hi again, Montanabw! I had a brain cramp when uploading two pictures of Irad and called them Jose Ortiz... Feels dumb. Any way to delete or rename since it might confuse anyone else who tries to use them.
You can request renaming at Commons. As the uploader, your reason is simply that you made an error, they'll do it without any glitches, most likely. I did one for you over there. Montanabw(talk) 03:06, 19 June 2016 (UTC)

I was going to do this for the Irad Ortiz article, but didn't have my ducks in a row within the 5-day deadline, so I nominated Speightstown instead. See Template:Did_you_know_nominations/Speightstown_(horse). I'll help you shepherd it through the process, it is SO MUCH FUN to see one's creation hit the main page of Wikipedia. Hope you don't object that I nominated it for you (a person can nominate their own articles). Montanabw(talk) 03:01, 24 June 2016 (UTC)

Congrats, but it's actually 7 days! White Arabian Filly Neigh

Speightstown (horse) has been nominated for Did You Know

Hello, Jlvsclrk. Speightstown (horse), an article you either created or to which you significantly contributed, has been nominated to appear on Wikipedia's Main Page as part of Did you knowDYK comment symbol. You can see the hook and the discussion here. You are welcome to participate! Thank you. APersonBot (talk!) 12:01, 24 June 2016 (UTC)

Ready for prime time yet?

DO you think this fellow is ready for his own wikipedia article yet? http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/212758/jockey-hill-guides-in-1-000th-winner. Not much in the way of G1 wins, but a 13-year career... Thoughts? Montanabw(talk) 22:04, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

Montanabw Hmmm, borderline. I see he recently rode Pleuven in the Wise Dan and that was a great performance, so maybe he's finally getting someone's attention. I'll dig around and see if there's anything else interesting to say about him.

Dancer

Sorry, just hit an edit conflict, I'll restore your stuff and be out of there in a second. I was just wikignoming and copyediting, didn't change sources... put in a few hidden comments, do with them as you will and toss when read or fixed!! Montanabw(talk) 04:31, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

OK, I'm done. I think I restored all the sources you added in the right spots, and I hope my rearranging and text editing improved the article. On these, I always tell people that if I didn't help, "toss what sucks" and if I messed up anything big time, that's what {{trout}} is for! I really like the pedigree analysis and the inbreeding sections. This article is actually close to being good article quality and I'd be glad to help you take it through that gauntlet. (It's closer than Secretariat, actually-- shorter and less complicated). Montanabw(talk) 04:42, 10 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks so much. I appreciate the reorganization - I've been struggling to eliminate duplicated info but it hasn't always worked. Still have to work on sources for things like that first para in the background section (which someone else wrote). I know its all true, but darned if I can find a source that says it all - well, I'm sure its all in Muriel Lennox's book but I can't find my copy. The source problem compounds when we get to some of paragraphs in the sire section - a little from here, a little from there... Anyways, I am working on it! Jlvsclrk (talk) 05:55, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

Secretariat at GAN

Well, I put up Secretariat for Good article. Once we get a reviewer, it could be a real gauntlet to run, but I have done it a few times before, so I'm willing to take the brunt of the work. Basically, if a reviewer flags a sourcing issue, we both may need to scramble the jet fighters to find better sources, and I also am fretting a little about your screenshots surviving the fair use rules, but I'm cautiously optimistic. Keep fingers crossed, it may take a while for a reviewer to pop by, but I'll ping a few people. Montanabw(talk) 05:40, 17 July 2016 (UTC)

gulp! looking forward to it. Jlvsclrk (talk) 18:35, 17 July 2016 (UTC)
The first few, I was ready to rip my hair out and scream, but now that I know the drill... my last GAN was for Ann T. Bowling and I had a very tough reviewer on that one, but I still got it there. The article is good enough to nominate, plus I am also in this little contest called the WikiCup and I need the points for a "big" GA to stay alive in Round 4 because I don't have anything ready for a featured article run this time!! (LOL!) (In 2014, California Chrome and Mucho Macho Man saved the day...and in 2015, it was Pharoah... lol) Montanabw(talk) 01:50, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

DYK for Speightstown (horse)

On 21 July 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Speightstown (horse), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the racehorse Speightstown (pictured) sold for US$2 million as a yearling? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Speightstown (horse). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Speightstown (horse)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Ooh. Redlink...

Rood and Riddle Veterinary Hospital. That might be an interesting one to do up! Montanabw(talk) 23:00, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Agreed. I'd love to look into that. Just want to finish update Medaglia d'Oro with a few more sources. Jlvsclrk (talk) 01:39, 26 July 2016 (UTC)
It's up now as Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, which is the official name. Don't know if should put up some redirects, though I did check around for articles that contained the words. Jlvsclrk (talk) 13:55, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
I'll fiddle with that. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to nominate the article at DYK... start here: WP:DYK/N and ping me when you've nominated it; I'll clean up any formatting problems (I'm gonna make you do it 'cause you get your first five nominations "free" of doing the "qpq" -- so if I nominate it, I have to... and right now, I'm feeling lazy...), Montanabw(talk) 21:25, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, Montanabw. I took a stab at it. Jlvsclrk (talk) 01:42, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

Quotations

Just a heads up to be careful with quotations. They can get flagged by the copyright violation tool and especially if quoted with the same breaks as in the source article.. (i.e, if the article states, "it was a big deal," he said, "I'm really happy." then best to put it here as "it was a big deal, I'm really happy," he said.) A few are good, a lot can become a problem. I'm thinking they are getting to be a bit much in the Dale Romans article... just a light shave and a trim... think of quotes as a goatee...(LOL) Montanabw(talk) 19:48, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. I'm working on Little Mike now and there are a lot of quotes because his connections said a lot of interesting things about him, but it can get to be too much. I usually start with putting a fair number quotes in verbatim and then trim out the ones that are redundant. Jlvsclrk (talk) 20:11, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
Yay for Little Mike! The big thing to avoid is a drive-by copyvio tagger. I got slapped pretty bad for too much close paraphrasing on one of my earliest articles (Equine nutrition) but ultimately got it to GA. There's also an automated bot that also goes around and flags articles if they seem to have too much copypaste. Some folks slap on the big scary lock-it-down tag without paying attention to the actual article. So far you are fine, but just beware the bot... Montanabw(talk) 00:57, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Little Mike pics

The same video that I pulled screenshots off for the Wise Dan article has images of Little Mike at about 2:47. The quality is really poor, but a poor image beats nothing. The link is here, and you can copy the template I used for the Wise Dan screenshot here. I pulled a few screenshots and will try to get an image up in the next few days, but they will be super-fuzzy. If you have editing software that can clean up cell phone video and make them any better, my feelings absolutely will not be hurt -- all I have is iPhoto! (I love FranceSireTV, the commentators are insane and they clearly have a lot of fun at their job. A lot, but not all of their stuff is released on YouTube with a cc-compatible license) Montanabw(talk) 22:36, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

FYI

Languishing in my sandbox are ideas for a potential top-to-bottom rewrite of Equine conformation -- it's User:Montanabw/Conformation_sandbox. Daunting task and probably image-heavy. But FYI if you want to swipe anything there. Montanabw(talk) 05:50, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Stover

I answered your images question at my talk. I think the Stover article is pretty much good to go; I made a few fiddly tweaks, put in a few hidden text comments for additional improvements, and suggested you use the {{cite book}} template (which can be accessed in the pull-down "templates" window in the editing window if you haven't tried that trick yet). All that aside, none of it is required, and I'd feel comfortable moving it into mainspace now or at any time you say "go" -- you can move it yourself, but if you want me to do the move (I've got the autopatrolled right, so it will not be flagged by WP:NPP if I do it (wink).) Montanabw(talk) 03:52, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, Montanabw. I went through a made some last tweaks and think its good to go. If you don't mind doing the move, I'd appreciate it. Thanks! Jlvsclrk (talk) 23:14, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
Moved to mainspace. You now have five days (or maybe it's seven?) to do your WP:DYK/N nomination! (I'll help, but if I do the actual nom I have to review someone else's, you get your first five free...) Montanabw(talk) 23:53, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

Arrogate

Have you got this one in your sandbox yet? If not I'll get a basic start article up. A year when various colts take turn to look awesome does take more work than a year when you have a "big horse" who dominates. Tigerboy1966  15:24, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

I hadn't started it but that was a real eye-opener, wasn't it? Nice article in the New York Times Jlvsclrk (talk) 15:32, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
Trust Tigerboy to be prompt: Arrogate is live! (Jlvsclrk, did you get to go to the Travers this year? Loved the photos you had from last year! Wow!) Montanabw(talk) 23:36, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
I went to the Jim Dandy this year as the crowds at the Travers last year were kind of overwhelming - not as much stamina for standing at the rail as I used to have! Was wondering if I should add pics to more of the race articles. Took a lot of pretty pictures but not sure which ones are needed. Wish I had a pic of Arrogate as his face is so cool with the dark grey and light.
I'd say if you have appropriate images, go for it. Your shots of Dale Romans and Beholder (horse) were fantastically helpful. We don't have photos for people like Chad Brown and others, plus some of the jockey photos are iffy quality. Saratoga Racecourse and other highlights of the area would benefit too. Upload the images to commons, at least! You take good photos! Montanabw(talk) 21:42, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
On a somewhat related note, was wondering if you could give your opinion on a few things:
  • In Breeders' Cup Challenge, was wondering if we should create yearly articles showing the horses who won the respective races (especially since the races involved in the series often change each year). Might help for the yearly main Breeders' Cup article. I don't mind doing the work, just wonder if it would be of use.
  • In Breeders' Cup Classic (and the other races for that matter), was wondering if we shouldn't put in more text about the history, stand out performances. Or is it generally assumed this will go in the article on the winner? Again, I don't mind doing the work if its useful.
  • in National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, I added in the years that the horses raced, since at least a third of the members were inducted by historical review long after they had retired. What do you think about adding numbers of races, number of wins, and/or earnings as well. All the info is on their site, and I just happen to have acquired the guide book that shows the data, making it easy to enter. Was comparing it to the Baseball HoF List showing data like ERA and what-not.
  • Darn, I had another question but its gone now! Jlvsclrk (talk) 00:20, 31 August 2016 (UTC)

LOL! My take is that

  • we are having a tough time keeping the Road to the Kentucky Derby articles going 2016 Road to the Kentucky Derby, etc...) but if you want to make the breeders' cup challenge list into an overview article and then do annual lists, once you've created the templates and done the past ones, it probably won't be too daunting for others to help in the future...
  • I'd favor improving the article. We should, in theory put the BCC and the Triple Crown races on the track to be GA quality even if we don't nominate them. I wouldn't bloat the main article with a play by play, as there are articles such as 2015 Breeders' Cup that can cover the annual highlights, but I do think there's room for improvement. Montanabw(talk) 21:42, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
  • I'd do the HOF as a chart. That said, charts are a pain in the (formatting) ass. But worth it for how they look when done (I know whereof I speak, see List of Bureau of Land Management Herd Management Areas, which has over 270 items, it was a huge challenge and I worked on it for over a year...).

Whenever you have more notions, feel free to post here or over at WP horse racing. Montanabw(talk) 21:42, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Susan Stover

Hello! Your submission of Susan Stover at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! yorkshiresky (talk) 20:38, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Susan Stover. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Susan Stover), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Sandboxing

I like to "sandbox" my articles so they are halfway together before going live. While you can do this in draft space, or you can use the "sandbox" link on your menu bar, I like to create an article-specific sandbox, so when it's ready to go live, the article history (including any contributors besides you) goes with it. I create a link like this: User:Jlvsclrk/Susan Stover, click on it, create the page, and away you go. When you move it to mainspace, you can change the title if you need to (if Susan Stover is taken, for example). Then you can put a speedy delete tag on the sandbox so you don't wind up with 10,000 of them (or ping me to move it without a redirect, which also blanks it -- I have pagemover tools). Anyway, see my reply at my talk page, I think this is a great idea. Montanabw(talk) 22:01, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

Thanks Montanabw. I'd created a few early articles in Sandboxes but did a copy and paste to create a new article, so the original stuff is still lingering there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jlvsclrk/Lexie_Lou is still there and who knows what else. How exactly do I mark them for deletion? Thanks as always for your help. Jlvsclrk (talk) 02:03, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
Dropping in because Montanabw doesn't seem to be online; if you blank any page in userspace, an admin will usually delete it. I think there are also templates specifically for deletion of your own contribs, but I'm not sure.
By the way, I saw where somebody was fussing at you for your latest DYK, saying it was too old. I've done several DYKs on articles that I sandboxed and then moved to mainspace; the trick seems to be to put the status as new/mainspace, and use the date that you moved it to mainspace rather than the day you created the draft. As long as it has been in mainspace less than 7 days, it's new for DYK purposes. That's completely within the rules, and if somebody doesn't pass it for age reasons they're misunderstanding the criteria. White Arabian Filly Neigh 20:21, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
Sorry I've been such a stranger. Yes, to delete an unused sandbox, just blank it and replace the content with the G7 or "db-author" tag shown here. Sometimes if you just blank it, it will eventually be deleted, but I don't count on that. Montanabw(talk) 04:28, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

I done it

  • Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Secretariat (horse)/archive1. You're a co-nominator, 'cause you did most of the real work on this last push and deserve a lot of credit! I'll deal with the politics and the personalities, you feel free to fix anything that legitimately needs fixing. If it's a dubious request (like someone wanting us to say "girl horse" instead of "mare"), I'll take on that stuff. This will probably run about a month, so don't panic that any one thing has to be fixed instantly, so long as one of us pops by daily and either addresses an issue or says, "hang in there, please," it's all good. Montanabw(talk) 20:34, 17 September 2016 (UTC)
I'm back again, sorry I've been "going dark" for multiple days at a time lately, just busy and a lot of traveling, I've been getting awful headaches after my last two road trips and not sure what's up with that, but I'm not gone for good, don't worry. You are doing great on the Secretariat FAC and where you are confused, you are doing a good job of asking for clarification. Montanabw(talk) 22:59, 24 September 2016 (UTC)
No worries! Hope you're feeling better soon. The abrupt change to fall weather really threw my body for a loop. Jlvsclrk (talk) 01:04, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
That and the change in length of day, I think that's finally caught up with me, too! Montanabw(talk) 04:39, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

What I'm working on next

Keeping track of my wiki-to-do list:

  • Secretariat (horse) - detail, detail, detail! Found a great link to a bloodhorse page where you can download all of their articles on his three-year-old races. a real bonanza http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/special-reports/459/blood-horse-look-back-secretariat-triple-crown-season
    • Add to the pedigree section about the Bold Ruler-Princequillo nick. Somethingroyal the blue hen
    • Add to the stud section about inbreeding to Secretariat. Didn't know that Wise Dan was. Speightstown too
  • new article for Lady Eli - she deserves it!
  • ?new article for Melatonin (horse) - doubling this year in the Big Cap and Gold Cup - wait to see if he can add one more!
  • some clean-up on Northern Dancer, more on his race career
  • ETA 7/7 - new article for Lexie Lou - Queen's Plate, CHOF and now multiple G2s (first Queen's Plate winner in quite a while to do so). she deserves something.

* ETA 7/7 - work on Mark E. Casse - really out of date

  • ETA 7/9 - ? new article for Catch a Glimpse - CHoY and now a 2nd G1 win under her belt too!
  • ETA 7/9 - ? new article for Effinex - 2nd to Pharoah last year in the Classic and just repeated in the Suburban - wait to see if he can add one more

* ETA 9/3 - new article for Shaman Ghost - Queen's Plate winner who just pulled off a shocker in the Woodward

  • ETA 9/5 - upgrade on Bob Baffert – very incomplete
  • ETA 9/5 - upgrade on Jerry Hollendorfer - very incomplete
  • ETA 9/5 - upgrading various articles related to the Breeders' Cup
  • ETA 9/7 - upgrade Jimmy Jerkens - currently a stubby stub. fair bit last year after his father died.
  • ETA 10/7 - upgrade Point Given. very sketchy right now
  • ETA 10/7 - last of the major BC preps will be Saturday, then can get working on article for 2016 Breeders' Cup
  • ETA 10/8 - start sandboxing A. P. Indian - sprinter is scary good this year with two G1s, two track records. frontrunner for sprinter of the year. Nice article to have whether he wins or loses at the BC (especially the former of course!)

Feel free to chime in with suggestions, tips, sources... Jlvsclrk (talk) 05:00, 27 June 2016 (UTC)

Tigerboy1966, what do you think about me doing something for The Pizza Man - Arlington Million last year, Northern Dancer this year, one of those mid-western horses with a solid following? Jlvsclrk (talk) 21:52, 17 September 2016 (UTC)
I'm not Tigerboy, but if you look at WP:NHORSERACING, I think that being a Grade I winner meets the threshold of notability. He's little bit on the line, but maybe start it in a sandbox with his win statistics. On one hand, we've gotten some whines about how we have great articles on recent winners and not nearly as good of coverage on historic greats, but on the other hand, every cricket player who ever played a single season of pro ball in Manchester seems to get their own article, so my take is "proceed until apprehended." Montanabw(talk) 19:28, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I try to improve at least five articles for every one I create. I must get back to Northern Dancer some day – I think he deserves to be GA. I'm planning to do more work on Eclipse too, but you know how it is. If there's any horse in particular that needs work, just give me a heads up. Jlvsclrk (talk) 22:21, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
Someone around here described it as a balance between article creation and article "curation." Sounds to me like you have it right. An area that could use work are all the redlinks at {{Preakness Stakes}} and the other triple crown and Breeders' Cup navboxes, tons of new articles to create there, though rather repetitious and some years a bit dull... Montanabw(talk) 21:21, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
Good thought. Going back through the Belmonts now. Enough to keep me busy for quite some time to come! Jlvsclrk (talk) 03:17, 8 October 2016 (UTC)

Up to my ears in alligators, but you are doing fine with the FAC for Secretariat... in racing terms, now that Nikkimaria is there to do the source check, you are basically at the top of the stretch, but fending off all challengers!  ;-) Montanabw(talk) 09:13, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

DYK for Always B Miki

On 28 January 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Always B Miki, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that pacer Always B Miki set a world record of 1 minute 46 seconds, the fastest mile in Standardbred history? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Always B Miki. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Always B Miki), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Cool, Tigerboy1966! Nice to have an article for him. I just did a quick edit but can probably dig up a bit more. Nice article by the DRF with a few details on his training for the Irish 2000. FYI, the bloodhorse article on his death is wrong about him being NY-bred HOY in 1991 - that year, the honor went to Fourstardave. Jlvsclrk (talk) 20:22, 21 April 2017 (UTC)

Female family relationships

Was playing around with wiki coding and came up with the following as an exercise. I love stuff like this but am afraid not many others are so am just leaving it here. Could put it in under Thoroughbred breeding theories or as some chit-chat with category:Thoroughbred family 1 I suppose. Not sure if the "who is" joiners help by giving context or hurt because they clutter up the text. Opinions welcome!

---

The overall structure of family 1 is as follows:[1]

  • Tregonwell's Natural Barb Mare (foundation mare of family 1)
    • is fifth dam of Bonny Lass (1723, family 1-a)
      • who is third dam of Promise (1768, family 1-d)
        • who is dam of Prunella (1788, family 1-e)
          • who is dam of Penelope (1798, family 1-o)
            • who is dam of Web (1808, family 1-s)
              • who is fifth dam of Queen Bertha (1860, family 1-w)
              • Web also twelfth dam of La Troienne (1926, family 1-x)
              • and dam of Trampoline (1825, family 1-t)
                • who is third dam of Maid of the Glen (1858, family 1-u)
            • Penelope also fifth dam of Hilarity (1871, 1-p)
            • and fourth dam of The Prairie Bird (1844, 1-r)
          • Prunella also dam of Pawn (1808, family 1-f)
            • who is third dam of Ellen Horne (1844, family 1-j)
              • who is second dam of Paraffin (1870, family 1-l)
                • who is dam of Footlight (1876, family 1-m)
                  • who is second dam of Chelandry (1894, family 1-n)
              • Ellen Horne also dam of Rouge Rose (1865, family 1-k)
            • Pawn is also dam of Problem (1823, family 1-g)
              • who is fourth dam of Sunshine (1867, family 1-h)
                • who is dam of Sunray (1874, family 1-i)

Derby time

Seeing a lot of redlinked trainers — more than usual — and a few jockeys ( Jose Ortiz (jockey)?) Who should be the priorities to get their own articles? Thoughts? Montanabw(talk) 04:13, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

Jose Ortiz would be my next priority since he was nominated for the Eclipse last year and is getting a lot of good mounts this year. Can use a lot of the same sources as Irad, his brother. As for the trainers, none of the redlinks is notable yet – all smaller trainers waiting for their big break. Looks like it might be a Pletcher year, though his record in the Derby is horrific so I'm not holding my breath. Steve Haskin is really tearing his hair out trying to figure out this year's crop! Jlvsclrk (talk) 04:50, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
I know what you mean, I like to read Haskin’s Derby Dozen. I notice that Joe Sharp has a contender… wonder how much longer we will be keeping his bio as Mr. Rosie Napravnik? (I have a couple paragraphs on him in her article… so far I don’t think he has yet met the “multiple Grade I” standard I’d like to see…) Montanabw(talk) 21:21, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, he doesn't even have a single G1 winner, though Girvin could be his big breakthrough. Equibase now has a Top Horses tab on their Trainers stats so its even easier now to see if they meet a notability threshold. Jlvsclrk (talk) 00:15, 25 March 2017 (UTC)
That might be good for sourcing the “notable horses” lists here… sometimes those are a pain to generate. (Worse for jockeys than trainers, though…) I linked Sharp to Rosie’s article via a redirect. Montanabw(talk) 04:23, 25 March 2017 (UTC) Montanabw(talk) 04:23, 25 March 2017 (UTC)
Hi, montanabw, getting back to Jose Ortiz, I notice that the simple link Jose Ortiz now redirects to José Ortiz, a retired basketball player. So there's going to be lots of misdirects from all the stakes races the jockey has won. How do we find them all? Should we correct the redirect to go to the DAB page? I was going to start on the jockey article tomorrow. Jlvsclrk (talk) 21:00, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
When you start yours, title it Jose Ortiz (jockey) (or José Ortiz (jockey), whichever is correct). Then, once you have it started, ping me and I will make Jose Ortiz (or José Ortiz) a dab and move the current one to Jose Ortiz (basketball) (or José Ortiz (basketball). That way, if someone gets upset and starts a fight, it will be with me, not you. Montanabw(talk) 05:09, 10 May 2017 (UTC)
Thanks montanabw. I created the article as Jose Ortiz (jockey) since none of my sources shown the accent on the e, even if we all know it should be there. I fixed the pages that were being redirected to the basketball player, who has an amazing number of good links to his page due to a long career and lots of Olympic appearances. Might be more trouble than its worth to change him, though eventually I expect the jockey will outstrip him in terms of links. He's really starting to get some good horses now! Thanks as always for your help Jlvsclrk (talk) 07:57, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
Thank YOU for doing the heavy lifting of actually writing up this stuff! Montanabw(talk) 22:55, 13 May 2017 (UTC)

Photo request?

Hey anywhere in your collection, do you have an image of H. Graham Motion? We have no photo for him. (That said, if you don't, we will have to watch MarylandGovPics this year if Irish War Cry runs, as maybe he'll pop up in a photo of theirs....). Montanabw(talk) 01:44, 14 May 2017 (UTC)

I took an awful lot at the Breeders' Cup last year but can't find one of him. Jlvsclrk (talk) 03:44, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
Hmm. I grabbed an image of Michael Matz off Flickr, purely by coincidence -- so much there is uploaded with useful captions like "Image 12345XYZ".  :-P Montanabw(talk) 02:21, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Afds

Just an FYI, on those AfD cases, they have a bot that tracks people's positions based on the first boldfaced word in the comment (I don't know how it works, I just know that it's what we are supposed to do) so it's best to start by saying Keep' or "Delete (or, for other dramas-with-polling, Support or Oppose). You can add that to your comments. Montanabw(talk) 02:17, 26 May 2017 (UTC)

Saratoga....

Hey, any chance of seeing you might be uploading new photos from Saratoga this year? (Up here our little Great Falls race meet starts the same weekend, all five days of it...) We ought to chat a bit about photographing races... I did OK at Los Al, but had high ISO and graininess when blown up, plus I've been having trouble with a slow memory card...possibly that only because I've been experimenting with shooting RAW, so huge memory images, but... anyway... Montanabw(talk) 06:15, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi there! I'm going to Monmouth Park for the Haskell this year so expect to see a few of the Derby horses - Irish War Cry for sure. For horseracing photos, I usually stand at the rail so I don't have to zoom too much, and use shutter priority because the blur is noticeable otherwise. My favorite place to photograph though is the walking ring because you can just shoot normally and get really up close. Jlvsclrk (talk) 06:22, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
Oh! Have fun! What do you set for shutter priority? Is 1/500 enough or do you go higher if you can? Incidentally, did a drive-by of Tamarkuz, that article needs gobs of work! Montanabw(talk) 07:03, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
I usually cheat and use my camera's sports setting (the running man if you've got a Nikon). It tends to wash out color a bit so I usually do a color correction. When I do use manual settings, it depends on the time of day and the amount of zoom I'm using with my telephoto lens - could be 1/1000 at noon for a close up subject, down to 1/25 by twilight for the horses at the head of the stretch when I'm at full zoom. I usually try to keep the shutter speed in the middle of that range (eg 1/125 during the Beholder/Songbird race sequence, and the real secret is to track the motion properly. I tend to lead my subject just a bit too much. Jlvsclrk (talk) 17:20, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
I'll have to upload a few I took last weekend at Great Falls. I've got the running man setting too... my problem is that I'm having issues getting focus just where I want it and sometimes the camera (I've got a Canon) wants to set a ridiculously high ISO. Do you shoot with a tripod or monopod at all? Montanabw(talk) 19:42, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

And... Haskell photos? Girvin? Irish War Cry? Graham Motion? Joe Sharp? etc...? (Awaiting uploads...!!). Montanabw(talk) 19:42, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

Uploads tomorrow! Did get lots of all the Haskell horses, plus Sharp in the winner's circle. Need to sleep today though - long drive! Jlvsclrk (talk) 20:47, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

Be careful with the accusation of vandalism

Vandalism has a particular definition on Wikipedia. Misusing it does a lot of harm. I was disambiguating the name of a horse, though it looks like the name was removed. That's fine if it's correct, but be careful with the accusations.
Vmavanti (talk) 23:01, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi sorry, I was trying to get back to the edit after yours, where someone had done 20K worth of vandalism (basically erasing 20 years of someone's career and changing around the horses he had ridden). Jlvsclrk (talk) 09:59, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

Races considered

Hi Jlvsclrk, I really appreciate all the work that has gone into the Northern Dancer page but I think it is important to be consistent. There are horses in the chart like US Navy Flag that have NOT won any of the included races. I think it is important to stay true to your criteria ps This is my very first Wiki contribution so I hope I have got this right Riverend (talk) 02:01, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

Thanks Riverend, I agree. Everyone once in a while a horse gets added in the sire line that doesn't meet the race criteria - I try to correct but may have missed some. Got rid of Roly Poly and U S Navy Flag. LMK if you spot others or go ahead and delete them yourself. Jlvsclrk (talk) 21:17, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Gun Runner (horse)

On 8 March 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Gun Runner (horse), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Gun Runner (pictured) won the 2017 Whitney Stakes with another horse's shoe caught in his tail? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Gun Runner (horse). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Gun Runner (horse)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

What is there to see also when no article exists?

See also reads 'The "See also" section should not link to pages that do not exist (red links), nor to disambiguation pages (unless used for further disambiguation in a disambiguation page).' Put them back in only after the articles exist....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 17:44, 30 April 2019 (UTC)

CfD of interest

I think you created this category. Discussion of interest: Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2019_May_5#Category:Northern_Dancer_bloodline — Preceding unsigned comment added by montanabw (talkcontribs)

Hi, this is montanabw's mentee. Yes, they are trying to delete it. More deletes than keeps right now. dawnleelynn(talk) 16:37, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
Hi, I didn't create the category and tend to agree its almost redundant now because ND is in a VERY high percentage of modern pedigrees (especially Europe and Australia). OTOH, it is kinda cool to see the impact of "the greatest Canadian". But I'll go with the consensus. I DID create the article for the Northern Dancer sire line, which has some of the same information but more organized so you can see the relationships. Jlvsclrk (talk) 21:39, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for your reply. Sorry it took me so long to acknowledge it. You are definitely the right one to decide so I've ceased activity on that CfD. The article you referenced is very interesting and useful, so thank you. dawnleelynn(talk) 16:57, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

Says-The "See also" section should not link to pages that do not exist (red links), nor to disambiguation pages (unless used for further disambiguation in a disambiguation page). As a general rule, the "See also" section should not repeat links that appear in the article's body or its navigation boxes.[9]

The note[1] reads- The community has rejected past proposals to do away with this "rule" or to add text reminding editors that, as a general rule, it has exceptions. See, for example, this RfC.[2]

The NBC Navbox at the bottom of the page links to those articles....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 20:17, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

The NBC Navbox is usually minimized and I can't think that anyone would look there to find links to the other races. But I see I am going to lose this argument so will be quiet from now on. Suggest you go and change the articles for the last dozen or so years on these races as well. Jlvsclrk (talk) 21:17, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

Hollywood Derby - first Graded stakes year

Re: Your edit [3] Hollywood Derby - first Graded stakes year
In completing the Hollywood Derby winners' table I reverted your change from 1974 back to 1973 as the year of the first graded stakes. I think you, as many of us did, thought TOBA's statement saying that as a result of their work The Blood-Horse first published a list of Graded stakes on January 1, 1974" meant that was the first year. [4] They confused things even more when then stated the European Pattern race system was implemented in 1972. While 1974 was the first U.S. list, it was based on the then completed grading done throughout 1973 when the TOBA committee graded all stakes after each prospective race was run. By year end they had their work complete and could then provide a list to each track owner of the 1973 results plus a list for the ensuing year of 1974. They gave it to the media, a great many of which basically ignored it for several ears. Same procedure for Europe who did their one-by-one grading in 1971 and were then able to publish their full list in advance for the 1972 year. Back in 2011 Churchill Downs Incorporated published on their Kentuckyderby.com site an excellent history of their graded stakes, each in a separate PDF format and did so through 2016. It includes the applicable Grade as per the one at this link. [5] In 2013 they also did a single PDF with all of the Churchill Downs stakes plus numerous others which were most often ones leading up to the Derby. I downloaded all of the aforementioned individual PDFs and the large single one. As far as I could tell, they are now all just about gone from the Web. These are the Grades for 1973 from the big Churchill Downs Incorporated PDF file: Kentucky Derby G1, Kentucky Oaks G2, Clark G3, Falls City G3, Golden Rod G3, Kentucky Jockey Club G3 - - - Arkansas Derby G2, Blue Grass G1, Florida Derby G1, Fountain of Youth G3, Gotham G2, Louisiana Derby G2, San Felipe G2, Santa Anita Derby G1, Wood Memorial G1 --- Stretchrunner (talk) 01:57, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

Great info, Stretchrunner. I knew that they had to have evaluated the races in 1973 in order to publish grades in 1974 but it's hard to find sources that actually show the numbers. I'm especially reluctant to talk about 1973 because it raises the question of how many G1s Secretariat won and god only knows how they graded the Marlboro Cup for example. If only Equibase went back just a few more years! Glad you found that file from Churchill Downs. Jlvsclrk (talk) 00:49, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. Yesterday I was looking for refs on Indian Maid and found another C.D. PDF for the Falls City H. through 2015. It was one of the ones given a grade in 1973. In case you want to download it, here it is: [6]. I fully agree with your comments. Because the Marlboro Cup was not run before '73 it would not have been given a grade until 1975. Nonetheless, I think it was one of the great (top 20 or so) races & performances in history. BTW, I'm still pissed off that Turcotte wasn't allowed to ride in Secretariat's last race. That would be unheard of today. Of course, I have always felt a little sorry for Riva Ridge; if only Pimlico hadn't been muddy! As such, I wish grading would have been implemented a dozen years earlier and would therefore show up in today's records back to at least 1963-64. It is a mystery why Equibase stopped at '76 but perhaps their records 45 years ago and earlier are incomplete. I do admire their efforts to always get all the fact rights so maybe they chose to only publish where they knew everything would be complete and accurate. Thanks again. Marlboro Cup

Just found this on origin - I never knew about the "Match Race" idea.

"Prior to the Whitney, the Philip Morris Corporation proposed a $250,000 match race between Secretariat and his stablemate Riva Ridge, winner of the previous year’s Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes who had set a world record for 1 3/16 miles in the Brooklyn Handicap on July 4. The race, which was the brainchild of Philip Morris marketing director Jack Landry, would be called the Marlboro Cup and was scheduled for Sept. 15." --- more text: [7]

Stretchrunner (talk) 15:14, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

Yes, and then both Riva Ridge and Secretariat lost races within a few days of each other and they had to start scrambling! I always wondered if I should expand the section on the Cup to give more of the background (plus amplify that Riva Ridge was also a top notch runner). The race basically became a prototype for the Breeders' Cup Classic. Jlvsclrk (talk) 20:51, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

Pat Day page

Please undelete the stakes wins of Pat Day you removed. This was painstakenly added over the years by dedicated research by numerous editors and is very important in understanding the riding history of Pat Day. For example, I noticed his five Louisiana Derby wins were removed and in addition all of these stakes wins are now hidden.

Also please be aware that there is a person dedicated to mercilessly attacking the reputation of Pat Day and has had more than half a dozen accounts banned due to his use of sockpuppetry to bludgeon the Pat Day page. Emet77 is the latest sockpuppet of Peteski which you can read about here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Peteski132/Archive — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:6C3:4081:A10:9D29:1D47:575C:D9BD (talk) 03:08, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

Hello, I did this to be consistent with the way we've done other major trainers and jockeys like Bob Baffert. The standard is to show Grade I wins in the infobox. When you've got someone with as many wins as Day, even just sticking to Grade I can overwhelm users so we default to hiding most of it. This allows the user to focus on the classics, breeders' cup, and they can then expand the section to see the rest if they're interested. That does raise the style issue of whether we should put this list in the body of the article rather than the Infobox. In the US, we use the infobox but the European articles put more in the body. See for example Lester Piggott. Also, what do you think of adding all the times he's finished in the top three in the Triple Crown races instead of just the times he won? Again, see Bob Baffert for how this might look.
Note that for every race that I removed because it wasn't Grade I, I added at least one that was. The Louisiana Derby was only Grade III throughout the period of time he rode in it, and none of the winners he rode in it is particularly distinguished. By contrast, the old list missed some of the most important fixtures on the racing calendar like the Champagne and Travers which he won with horses like Easy Goer.
I'll definitely keep my eyes open for abuse. I've seen the same sort of behavior on the Kent Desormeaux article. Jlvsclrk (talk) 22:55, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

The real truth about Pat Day article

Thank you again Jlvsclrk for your Pat Day edits, as well as your horse racing edits and all of your contributions on wikipedia. The truth is that you, Jlvsclrk, had to extensively edit and remove the blatant errors and hyperbole of the blocked NatroneDay ( aka 2601:6C3:4081:A10:9D29:1D47:575C:D9BD, plus 2601:6C3:4081:A10:880F:BE7D:110A:5D64, 2601:6C3:4081:A10:FDF6:F268:862F:3E64, 2601:6C3:4081:A10:382C:1DB0:F90D:B67, 71.215.212.25, 71.215.18.168 ); after I pointed out that if an objective administrator would merely take a few moments to read this article and inline citations, they would clearly see, With all due respect, the last editor who edited this article made blatant errors, made statements (hyperbole) that are not backed up with any citations, and repeated statements/facts (wins, rankings, etc) already in the article. And the truth also is that it is the blocked NatroneDay (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:NatroneDay ) who has been and still is using numerous different sockpuppet ip addresses (which is why I countered/counterbalanced to restore the pertinent reliably sourced content) to continue pushing his unsourced content with numerous blatant errors version [by both removing reliably sourced content, and adding content without citing any reliable sources with blatant errors], including the latest 2601:6C3:4081:A10:9D29:1D47:575C:D9BD (whom you just replied to), plus 2601:6C3:4081:A10:880F:BE7D:110A:5D64, 2601:6C3:4081:A10:FDF6:F268:862F:3E64, 2601:6C3:4081:A10:382C:1DB0:F90D:B67, 71.215.212.25, and 71.215.18.168; which you can read about here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:NatroneDay

The fact that there are an endless amount of numerous horse racing experts, owners, trainers, etc., cited with reliably sourced citations (and the independent sources contextualizing why it is pertinent and relevant) that have these views/opinions/critiques of the jockey certainly means there is something more to this than pure fabrication - and certainly not a "pre-determined disdain", "mercilessly attacking," or "bludgeoning" the reputation of the article subject. The purpose of the numerous amount of these horse racing experts, owners, trainers, etc., cited with reliably sourced citations being in the article should not be to cast doubt on them (or remove them) just because they are controversial and critical, it is to summarize what these sources are saying. All significant viewpoints should be cited describing other (and all) points of view - that way there is a description of both (or all) points of view. If there are reputable sources contradicting one another and are relatively equal in prominence, describe both points of view - describing the opposing views clearly, drawing on secondary or tertiary sources and all positions included in the article. This is a response for the blocked NatroneDay (aka 2601:6C3:4081:A10:9D29:1D47:575C:D9BD, plus 2601:6C3:4081:A10:880F:BE7D:110A:5D64, 2601:6C3:4081:A10:FDF6:F268:862F:3E64, 2601:6C3:4081:A10:382C:1DB0:F90D:B67, 71.215.212.25, 71.215.18.168 ) , and not for you Jlvsclrk, as you, Jlvsclrk, clearly know all about this and know what you are doing on Wikipedia.

Jlvsclrk, just in case you missed it on the Talk:Pat Day page, I will suggest it here. Thank you very much Jlvsclrk. First, I agree with the vast majority of your edits, including the "Major" Stakes wins list only including Grade I wins (or races that were Grade I's when he won them). Just a few other suggestions/possible requests you may have missed for context and perspective. There is a Wikipedia link to Owner Barry Irwin's wiki article; which of you feel the need can add. For perspective and context, Day ranks 6th (tied for 6th all time with Castellano) all-time for Breeders Cup wins behind Smith, Velazquez, Bailey, Dettori, and Gomez.[1] I'd suggest this should be added if you agree; just like his Triple Crown all-time race wins ranking behind Arcaro and Shoemaker, and tied with Stevens, Hartack and Sande, is also in the article for context and perspective. Also, for perspective and context, Day ranks 4th all-time for all-time earnings behind John Velazquez, Smith and Castellano; and Day ranks 4th all-time in wins behind Baze, Pincay Jr., and Shoemaker.[2] I'd suggest these should be added as well for context, if you agree. Furthermore, I do not think it would be even close to being anywhere near "Undue Criticism," or "defamatory," or "libellous," or overly critical to note that Day's most common (along with Patient Pat) and most popular nickname was "Pat Wait All Day," as numerous citations within the article note this.[3][4] [5][6]; plus this sourced citation which seemed to be accidentally removed from the article.[7] The nickname was used Both in a critical way AND a positive way. I quote some of them, "What had frustrated the Coach Wayne Lukas (who at times had replaced Day with Bailey, Stevens and Donna Barton) and everyone who had ever ripped up a ticket on a horse Day (Pat Wait All Day or Patient Pat) rode was Day's deliberate style of waiting and waiting and waiting. Day's record was proof that Day being very patient was successful. But Day often looked too passive, especially when Day's run came up short. When that happened, Day drew the curses of bettors and questions from trainers."[8] Another quote, "Because Day often arrived at the wire too late, he was given an unflattering nickname--Pat (I’ll Wait All) Day."[9] Another quote, "There are critics of Day's riding style, Day's patient style often led to fast-finish near misses. But Day also had an uncanny ability to get the most out of a horse."[10] Another quote, "but Day was often criticized for waiting too long to make his move.[11] I also do not think it would be even close to being anywhere near "Undue Criticism," or "defamatory," or "libellous," or overly critical to note that despite Day winning many big races throughout North America, Day's daily (and meets) competition he dominated in the Midwest (all due respect to Larry Snyder, Fabio Arguello Jr, Pat Johnson, Charlie Woods Jr, Fires, Brumfield, Jim McKnight, Gryder, Meche, Melancon, Mark Guidry, Keith Allen, Mike McDowell, etc) was far lesser than the daily (and meets) competition he would go up against in New York (Florida in the winters) and California, as this citation attests to.[12] I quote, "Day was not without his detractors; his critics (critical here, but positive in others) called him Pat "Wait All" Day and said Day was a big fish in a small pond (significantly lesser daily competition) in the Midwest. Yes, Day would have more competition in New York (Florida for winters) or California, but Day preferred the smaller cities and slower pace of the Midwest." It should be noted that in this citation[13] it proclaims, "In the early- to mid-1990's, Day swapped Arlington and Oaklawn for Saratoga and Gulfstream (the NY-Fla circuit for summers and winters), and Day seldom ranked among the leaders in wins (vs better daily competition), although the switch's further allowed Day to have better and higher mount earnings nonetheless." I'd suggest these should be added as well for context and perspective, if you agree, and I don't believe these are even close to being anywhere near "Undue Criticism," or "defamatory," or "libellous," or overly critical. Also the citation cited for the quote, "D. Wayne Lukas said "I'm only as good as Pat Day's rides,"[14] doesn't have Lukas quoted as saying that; but I am sure you can find positive quotes from Lukas and others about Day/Day's riding style. The citation quotes Lukas as saying, "Lukas is more critical of famed jockey Pat Day's Derby performance than he is of Timber Country. "Pat spent most of the day steering him instead of riding him," Lukas said. "He was not nearly as aggressive as I wanted." Also, the citations attributed to "Day was also strong at taking horses to the lead as he did on Louis Quatorze in his 1996 Preakness victory and on Commendable in his 2000 Belmont Stakes win," are not attesting to these wins/rides, but are citing critiques of some of Day's quote "start stop, tentative riding" when riding Forty Niner, Seeking the Gold and Easy Goer.[15][16] Obviously, I'd also let you decide on the repetitiveness (maybe a bit too repetitive, but I understand your "casual fan" point) of some of his big wins throughout the article. That's your call, obviously. Thanks for all you have done, and continue to do for horse racing articled on Wikipedia.Emet77 (talk) 04:24, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

Graded stakes race

Re your revert of my edit:
• 22:14, 3 June 2020 diff hist -33‎ Graded stakes race ‎ Undid revision 960098603 by Stretchrunner (talk) Reverted good faith edit by Stretchrunner. Per source, the work was begun in 1973 and first published in 1974 as per previous wording. That's why no source from 1973 talks about grading current Tag: Undo

Sorry if my edit that said "introduced in 1973" left anyone confused. Perhaps you can come up with something more clarifying so no one anymore thinks "published in 1974" means in effect. As per the info I gave you previously in my post to your talk page re the Hollywood Derby the grading system was introduced with the first race on January 1, 1973. Because it refers to a U.S. system, I use terminology from Webster's (introduced : to bring into play). The system was in effect and applied in 1973 and had to be coordinated with every racetrack, which was in their own self-interest. Stretchrunner (talk) 23:24, 3 June 2020 (UTC):

I beg to differ. The system was not introduced in 1973. It was being developed at that time and was first published in 1974, exactly as it says in the article and the source. The so-called grades for 1973 were retroactively calculated and not widely published. It matters particularly because of Secretariat of course. Jlvsclrk (talk) 21:34, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
Where did you get that "grades for 1973 were retroactively calculated"? My info comes from two people involved (in addition to track owners, horse owners, breeders, and trainers were briefed in detail) that they graded each race that met the terms for grading and at the end of the year were then able to do comparisons and get answers that could mean changes were needed. To this day I question some grading, both up and down. BTW, if my failing memory serves me, the first time I heard the term used publicly was in the course of the 1978 TC races on TV. However, it really doesn't matter. Another BTW: as a Canuck do you make formal suggestions for the CAN HoF? I was doing some work on two individuals and in my research discovered a U.S. HoF inductee who is recorded as born in the U.S. was actually born in Canada, rode there and served in the Canadian Army during the War.
Sorry if I came off snappish. Per TOBA: "The grading of races began as a TOBA project in 1973, primarily at the request of European authorities anxious that North America have a method, similar to their Pattern race system implemented in 1972, for identifying the highest quality black-type events. In January, 1974, The Blood-Horse published the first list of 330 North American Graded Stakes." So the list published in 1974 is the 1974 grades, which are based on the calculations the committee did during 1973 to measure the quality of the fields. You are correct that the term did not see widespread use until 1978, which per TOBA is when DRF starting using it. Before that, it was only used in sales catalogues. New cat

Now, how about a name for the Category "Thoroughbred track record setter"? I've racked my brain and can't come up with a thing.Stretchrunner (talk) 02:58, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

Let's go for it. Do we need to do anything special to set up a new category? Jlvsclrk (talk) 02:29, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Graded stakes

Have you seen the new NYRA grades for 2020? $150,000 purse is a G2. Don't know, but think it might be for sustainability. Stretchrunner (talk) 17:49, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Yeah, they've cut back a fair bit this year because their takeout is down without any on-track handle. I think their philosophy was to maintain the purses of the 'bread and butter' claiming/allowance races so more trainers can stay afloat. Jlvsclrk (talk) 02:27, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

P.S.: Just found your creation "Northern Dancer sire line". Absolutely great and very valuable work. Stretchrunner (talk) 18:53, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Thanks! I blame it on a book called Classic Lines that I got way back in the 70s that had something like it. For year's I updated that book - it became quite a maze when Northern Dancer's line took off! A lot of fun. I'm tempted to do something like it for Mr. P as well (and possibly A.P. Indy and Sunday Silence) but always wonder if anyone else would be interested. Jlvsclrk (talk) 02:27, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
For ND and SEC, people of all sorts want to read/learn most everything. For Mr. P, AP & SS, I think there would be a lot of interest/appreciation but almost exclusively from more knowledgeable fans. (But few, if any, willing to do your kind of comprehensive & detailed work.) - Secondary note: just posted changes to bio for Albert Snider you might find interesting. Have a lot more info and will expand his article later. Stretchrunner (talk) 15:27, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Zenyatta

If there’s an article that needs to be cleaned up and taken to GA and maybe even FAC, Zenyatta’s is the one. Montanabw(talk) 04:06, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi User:Montanabw, I've gone through Zenyatta and added some detail. Do you have time to take a look? If we want to take it to GA, I'll have to properly format some sources towards the end, etc. I'm a little worried about tone, but, *shrug*, even the New York Times fangirled her. Jlvsclrk (talk) 01:02, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
I'll peek at it. My own time is pretty limited too, but slowly, slowly... Montanabw(talk) 23:49, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Kincsem

Hi, You answered me about the article about Kincsem on page by Blablubbs. I mapped and tracked career of Kincsem on my web turf.sk race by race, nearly day by day. Everything from the original sources, cleaned from fantasies and fictions of 20. century novelists and biographers. I fixed the margins of her wins in the table and I found a correct date of her death, facts that all the current references on Wikipedia have wrong. After deleting my last edits I have no zest to continue to improve Wikipedia. I see you are a racing fan so if you want to have the Kincsem page complete and true, you can contact me through my website (In menu on left side, "Napíšte nám", name and mail optional but good for answer). Have a nice day. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.52.32.58 (talk) 22:42, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi back, Special:Contributions/92.52.32.58. I've tried to incorporate all your changes - all I really did was reword slightly and reorganize for consistency with other horse racing articles. I hope to get Kincsem to featured article status and your changes will help. I'm really glad for example with the myth busting regarding her supposed kidnapping. Please let me know if I missed anything. Jlvsclrk (talk) 23:14, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

At first I must say that many times cited article from The Vault is full of fictions and fabrications. Article was translated on the Czech website Equichannel and professionals called it a "strange tangle" in the discussion. The article contains fabrications about the running of Kincsems races and other twisted facts. Example: in the cited article from The Vault you can find a picture from Illustrated And Dramatic News with description "there is no evidence that Kincsem was ever touched by a whip". Correct name of newspaper is The Illustrated Sporting And Dramatic News and wrote on page 513: "Madden riding her in rather butcher-like fashion after she had the race well in hand".
In the background of Kincsem is written: "Blaskovich normally sold all his yearlings". It's not true but it cannot be confirmed by citation, it is not written anywhere "Blaskovich not sold all his yearlings". I see from the training lists and results he kept the best horses, from the crop of 1873 he kept Hirnok and Miczi, both classic winners, from crop 1874 Kincsem, etc...
Stupid fabricated description of Kincsems exterior I replace by original description from the year 1876 with link to Austrian National Library but has been deleted... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.52.32.58 (talk) 02:10, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

Wikipedia is dependent on its sources, who of course are dependent on their sources. For most horse racing, we have a series of sources that we rely on heavily like Equibase and Equineline (maintained by The Jockey Club), major newspapers and magazines with strong editorial standards, books and websites by acknowledged experts. The Vault is a highly regarded source and the author cites multiple sources in her preamble. Please do not be disparaging. OTOH, any single source should be viewed with skepticism, especially if it contradicts multiple other sources.
For Kincsem's death, did you notice that her death was covered on the first page of the next edition of the paper you referenced? I think it likely that since her death would have been reported just as the edition from March 17 was being printed, they covered it briefly and then amplified it the following week. Are there any other daily newspapers we can look at? Jlvsclrk (talk) 21:45, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

I continue: I fixed info about Harmat, she is a winner of Hungarian 1000 Guineas, not Oaks. I put links to original results but has been deleted. Cited "German racing expert Philipp Alles" is a fictional person. There is no doubt about Kincsems pedigree. Every thoroughbred is registered in the Stud Book. In A-H Stud Book are registered imports of Cambuscan, Cotswold and The Mermaid. No records about mare Catherina. I put the link to original list of stallions and mares of Mr. Blaskovichs Stud but has been deleted.

Alles is not fictional, he was a noted pedigree expert. Many pedigrees are disputed, and the further back, the more they may disputed. For example, see the pedigree section on Eclipse. Even more recently, horses as important as Native Dancer have pedigree controversies associated with them. Wiki standard is to "teach the controversy" and emphasize the most likely interpretation. I'll try to find the sources you referenced. Unfortunately, there was a lot of back and forth with the edits so I'm trying to find the right content. Jlvsclrk (talk) 21:45, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

What means information: "Kincsem's female line is not on file on the Jockey Club's online database, Equineline."? Secretariat's male and female lines is not on file on the Czech Jockey Club online database. http://dostihyjc.cz/kun.php?ID=16598. It means that there are doubts about his pedigree?

I could write a book about issues associated with one country recognizing the stud book of other countries! It all kind of blew up in the late 1800s and had a huge impact on American bloodstock because the Brits didn't want to recognize the descendants of the great Lexington among many others. See http://www.bloodlines.net/TB/Families/FamilyNumbers.htm if you're interested. Again, I'll try to find the links you had included. Jlvsclrk (talk) 21:45, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi Jlvsclrk, sure I know the death of Kincsem was covered on the first page but Vadász- és Versenylap (Hunting and Racing Sheet) was not a newspaper. It was bulletin of "Jockey Club", publishing fixtures, training lists, race conditions, results, etc... I found many news from true newspapers but I use this because only this two contains a date. If you want I can find links for you.

Great. I would not be at all surprised that it was major news, similar to the death of Man o' War in the United States. Great horses inspire a dedicated following. And the obituaries often offer a better career summary that other reports, which are more focused on specific events. Jlvsclrk (talk) 14:48, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

About article from The Vault: Wikipedia cited The Wault who cited Beckworth (Beckwith ?) who cited Alles who doubts the origin of Kincsem.
It reminds me old russian joke: I know a man who know someone who hear about someone who see the banana...
I'm showing you banana: https://library.hungaricana.hu/hu/view/VadaszEsVersenylap_1859/?pg=228&layout=s

No doubt they Cotsword and The Mermaid were in Stud of Esterhazy. Both purchases were reported in Vadász- és Versenylap and was no mare named Catherina in Austria-Hungary.

I just added a two year old part of career of Kincsem with links to original sources. Read the story about Csalogany and if you prefer a fairy tale of Csalogany on The Vault you can delete my edit... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.52.32.58 (talk) 02:29, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Fabulous. I went through and did some minor edits but really appreciate the detail. Now I'm itching to learn Hungarian so I can understand the original sources! Did she have a specific running style? Was she often slow at the break?
As for the cat, its interesting the way legends spawn. She is painted with a cat. She travels with a horse named Csalogany. At some point, we get stories that call a cat named Csalogany her travelling companion. Possibly even true, maybe they just liked the name. Jlvsclrk (talk) 14:48, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

I used the example of Secretariat to demonstrate that online databases cannot be considered authoritative for the whole world. Equibase, Equineline and also DRF or Brisnet are excellent but only for Group/Grade racing, American racing or horses who touched with American racing of breeding. They are far from containing all horses of the world. If you try to find a great horses (Derby winner, Triple Ceown winners, etc...) from countries as Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland, Polen, you won't find most of them but it does not mean that they do not exist or their pedigrees are in doubt. The same is true in the opposite direction. In the online databases of European horse racing authorities you won't find majority of American thoroughbred population beacause is no reason to add all horses to the servers. The conclusion is that the origin cannot be assessed by internet sources from opposite side of the world.

Your example of Eclipse is not very good. He was born before the creation of the General Stud Book, means before the origin of the thoroughbred. If you go that far into the history, not only Native Dancer but literally all thoroughbreds of the word have controversies in pedigree. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.52.32.58 (talk) 10:36, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Very true about Equibase, and the British equivalents don't go back as far as needed in this case. Equineline is different though in that it incorporates pedigrees from recognized stud books around the world. It is significant that it shows all the other parts of her pedigree, but does not show the female line. When Equineline drops the ball so to speak, we then have to go to primary sources like the American Stud Book. And the point about Eclipse or Native Dancer or whatever is that even the Stud Book can be unreliable. So we note the controversy and go with the most likely interpretation. Jlvsclrk (talk) 14:48, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Corrections of my broken English are very appreciated.

Kincsem was never slow at the break. On sprint distances at two she wins from the front. When she beat Regimentstochter report says Kincsem beat the rival in first 50 strides and won in walk by 10. In Sopron description says, after one failed start the field jumps together nicely, Kincsem popping out of the rest like an arrow and flew away from 15 to 20 lengths. On mile at two she wins waiting behind leader. Later she wins some races "wire to wire", some waiting behind leaders, in St Leger she led the field behind 30 lengths leader who faliled to stay but no report about the slow start.
Grazing on the start looks absurd for me because they are two important men. First was skilled champion jockey Elijah Madden - I can't imagine as he allows Kincsem to grazing in moments before start. Second man was Francis Cavaliero, phantom of the Austro-Hungarian turf. He was stud leader (stud inspector) in stud of Esterhazy, later was in same position in the National Stud Kisber. He picked and bought nearly all important thoroughbreds from GB, he bought both parrents of Waternymph, bought Buccaneer, Cambuscan, mother of Epsom Derby winner Kisber Mineral and many more important horses. Later he was secretary of the Jockey Club, handicapper, steward and also a starter in Austria-Hungary and in Germany. He was known for accuracy and did not hesitate to repeat starts many times until he was satisfied. No way for him to start a race with a disadvantage for any participant.

Some legends and distortions probably occurred when some peoples studying the hungarian newspapers wihout knowing the language. With dictionary in one hand somebody find a name Csalogany, translate some unimportant words and at the end was a new story. Similar is information that Kincsem many times distanced the field. Word distance is many times in race reports and after an inaccurate translation, the phrase "she distanced the field" could have come out but "distance" here means pole or mark 200 meters to finish. Comments she goes away on distance or she has win in hands on distace, means that happend on that point.
Kincsem was pretty straightforward by my research, lika a Winx - win, win, win, win... and nothing too interesting. Some stories are undoubtedly fictional, just the novelists can's expected that so many documents are in Hungarian and Austrian archives and can's expected that the digital age would come and many peoples get the opportunity to find and verify the facts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.52.32.58 (talk) 20:49, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Pedigreequery

Hi Jlvsclrk, I added informations about the offspring of Kincsem to pedigreequery. It's extract from Vadász- és Versenylap and Allgemeine Sport-Zeitung. I read all the articles and checked all results so I find a results of Talpra Magyar, who is stated as unraced in the sources you recognize. It will be a hundreds of links, maybe can be solved like this?

I was going to add jockey in brackets to his name but hate to admit it, with the sort name format I had no idea how to fix it. Stretchrunner (talk) 19:12, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
Sortname goes last first then you can put in an optional link name to disambiguate - eg Smith|Mike|Mike E. Smith There's also a parameter you can use to turn off linking completely (eg, for someone who is very unlikely to ever have an article of their own), which is what I did in this case

Kincsem

Hi Jlvsclrk! I made a correction of Budagyongye's earnings. I took the previous amount from a book published after 1900. In 1900, the currency in Austria-Hungary was changed from guldens to crowns and the amounts were recalculated, but the profit from Germany was probably miscalculated. In addition, I found a forgotten start from Zukunfts-Preis. Here are the complete performances of Budagyonge http://turf.sk/budagyongye.txt

Back to our past discussion about pedigree of Kincsem. Here is the scan of Hungarian Stud Book http://turf.sk/studbook1865.pdf You can find there Cotswold and The Mermaid, with their General Stud Book records. Also you can find there the Caterina. Consider if the speculation (or try to be interesting) of so caled expert Philipp Alles has any value... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.52.32.58 (talk) 18:15, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

Okay, you've convinced me! How do you like the revised wording in the pedigree section? Jlvsclrk (talk) 01:17, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

The story of Kincsem does not begin: "One day on a forgotten farm in the Wild West (or elsewhere) has born Kincsem's dam..." The story begins: "One day in the stud of one of the richest families of the world..." According to some historians, Esterhazys were the richest family of the world that was not on the throne. A legend says that one of them saw on Newmarket gallops a horse that he liked and asked about the price. The owner replied that he would not have enough money. Esterhazy shot the horse down and asked again about the price and replied that there was no thing in the world for which Esterhazy would not have money...

Thoroughbred breeding was just begun in 1850ies, 1860ies in Austria-Hungary. There were only few thoroughbreds, maybe less then 100 and were highly valued and protected. Esterhazys bought most expensive thoroughbreds, employed English trainers, jockeys and staff who knew how to handle thoroughbreds. Also the control and registration of the thoroughbreds was very precise in A-H and Stud Book has been recognized by Weatherbys. It is impossible that from Esterhazy's stud came a horse with dubious origin. It sounds similar like someone is questioning the origin of some horse from Coolmore or Godolphin.

I think the sentence about Equineline is unnecessary there. It looks like a questioning of the A-H Stud Book and original General Stud Book. Anyone who understands IT technologies knows that is not talking about the pedigree of Kincsem, but about the way of administration of database.

I am preparing more significant changes. I want to rewrite the chapter "Background". I want to include a brief history of Austro-Hungarian horseracing in 5-6 sentences, then pure facts about Kincsem. Legends are an integral part of Kincem's story, so I want to create a chapter "Legends" and concentrate them there with some explanations. I found a letter written by Ernő Blaskovich about Kincsem, in which he wrote about some interesting details contradicts to legends. When I'm done, I'll put it on my talk page and let you know to consult. What do you think about that plan? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.52.32.58 (talk) 20:03, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

Sounds good. I mention Equineline because it is considered the definitive source for pedigrees, so when its missing something that's worthy of note. The rest sounds great. Jlvsclrk (talk) 23:56, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
