Out over the tips of your skis?

You're threatening to take any admin who dares to reverse you to ArbCom if they don't have the exact same level of overwhelming consensus for an unblock that would be required to reverse a DS sanction. That is identical to demanding that all your blocks be considered de facto DS blocks. Please tell me this was an isolated incident of you getting out over the tips of your skis. Please strike out the ArbCom threat, which has an extreme chilling affect on any uninvolved admin who sees a "normal" consensus to reduce or unblock in that discussion, but doesn't want to go thru an ArbCom case. --Floquenbeam (talk) 17:10, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

    As disappointing as it was inevitable. A day and a half and thousands of words, arguing over the difference between a BLP violation and a personal attack, no recognition of the actual problem.     • If you imposed a block knowing an unblock was "inevitable", that sounds like a violation of WP:POINT. A huge amount of editor time was wasted on a block you now say you knew would be overturned. Huh.
    • Failure of the community to recognize the "actual problems" you see might be due to your refusal to participate in the discussion beyond a big wide swipe with the tar brush [1].
    • And speaking of the tar brush, I was particularly wounded (metaphorically speaking, of course) by your claim that I have a pattern of going over [the line], getting blocked, then backtracking and saying he didn't really mean it or the silly admin took his remarks out of context or a brigade of humourless editors is determined to rob him of his fun. As an admin you know that Accusations about personal behavior that lack evidence constitute a WP:Personal attack, and that Serious accusations require serious evidence, usually in the form of diffs and links. I would hate to see you run afoul of that policy, particularly in the context of a highly visible discussion on our most-watched noticeboard. But no doubt you have lots of diffs that demonstrate the pattern you refer to. Please ping me when you've had a chance to assemble a list. Thanks.

    EEng, I'm not sure what you hope to achieve by posting here, beyond beating a dead horse still further. But since you're here ... I made what I considered to be a routine admin action, and an entirely proportionate response to disruptive editing. If I could relive the experience, I probably wouldn't block you again. Not because it wasn't the right thing to do (it was) or because it was procedurally incorrect (it wasn't), but because my Wikipedia time is limited and this is my hobby and I ended up spending most of the time I'd planned to spend on article work arguing in projectspace, which is something I try to avoid these days. It was only after the ANI thread developed, with people beginning to post bolded votes to unblock and talking about reducing the duration to "time served" without even feeling the need to give a rationale (or with rationales that closely resembled those at WP:Unblockables, that I realised the inevitability of your being unblocked. Point by point:
  • I certainly was not trying to make a point, beyond the point that you should comply with policy and be more mindful of the effect your comments can have when commenting on the biography of a real, living person. I don't think we have history; if we do, it didn't impact on my decision—I'd have taken the same action regardless of the username on the other end, with the possible exception of adjusting the duration to take account of experience and previous blocks.
  • I don't think I used the term "actual problems", though the problems seemed to be well recognised by the majority of commenters, even those advocating a reduction or removal of the block. And please do not presume to lecture me on "refusal to participate"; Wikipedia is not compulsory (that's policy, btw) and I have a family and a full-time job. You would see, if you weren't so keen to see that my editing tends to be in sporadic bursts beyond very simple actions easily done from a phone in a quiet moment. I did everything I could to be available to respond to comments and questions about my actions without badgering every commenter who disagreed with me, but ultimately my input or lack thereof would have made little difference to the discussion.
  • Far from tarring you, I consider that an accurate summary of your block log, the incidents leading to the blocks, and the comments in the ANI thread.

But in some cases it may mean "repeatedly triggers others to behave with inappropriate authoritarianism and is unblocked when it becomes apparent that the authoritarianism was inappropriate".

Or that doubling down on it when you were asked to stop (instead of asking for outside opinions or acknowledging that maybe you'd crossed a line) was sensible? I don't think you're a bad editor, but I think you sometimes cross the line from being funny or strident into being disruptive and this was definitely one of those times. I would strongly recommend that you rethink your approach next time somebody tells you you've crossed the line, otherwise you'll end up blocked again and there'll be another waste of everyone's time at ANI. Anomobryum

What's happening on the Anomobryum article? Is it or is it not supposed to be protected? I have been watching recent changes this past 15 minutes and can make no sense of what is happening there. I reverted Ashleyyoursmile who is not actually a vandal, and he reverted me back and asked me to explain myself while I (in tandem) told him not to keep adding PP. @Coldtrack: The article has been the target of a serial sockpuppeteer recently, including two new accounts today, although the edit they were making (removing the protection template) was technically correct. I've made a null edit now to remove the rollback link from the sock's edit which will hopefully make clear that there should be no more reverting.   • When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
  • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)

I haven't been as active at AE as I once was for some years but looking at the logs it appears I imposed the topic ban in 2014. While that was indeed a long time ago, I can't find evidence of any appeal. I was entirely inactive for a year but I don't recall being notified. On disruptive editing and blocks

Hi. Ekaditya, the editor I reported at WP:ANV is disruptively editing, edit warring against an established consensus past a fourth-level warning. Where do I have to report them in order for them to be temporarily blocked and stop the disruption? I can't stop it on my own, or I'll end up violating the 3-RR. Or can you just block them but not for vandalizing but for disruptively editing? —El Millo (talk) 07:58, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

Facu-el Millo, as a very general rule of thumb, if it takes more than a sentence or two to explain or a couple of minutes to look into, it doesn't belong at AIV. AIV is very much a summary process for obvious cases to free up the other noticeboards. WP:ANI is the best place to get more eyes on difficult or complicated situations. This one is interesting because (unlike most such incidents), the person shot was not a career criminal or an armed robber pointing a gun at somebody's head, but an upper-middle-class lawyer with a drink problem and a legally owned shotgun. This incident didn't attract as much academic attention as some of the others, but The Guardian covered the investigation and the inquest in detail from start to finish. Sinn Féin

Hello HJ! My name is Ben, and I am a somewhat new editor to Wikipedia. Been editing for I'd say a year and a half now! But anyways, I am here to ask, if you would be so kind, for permanent pending changes protection for the article Sinn Féin. It is a political party that has a troubled past after being the political wing of various paramilitaries during a conflict known as The Troubles, and since recently is a hot topic once again as they won an election in 2020 for the first time since 1919. This article is extremely controversial due to its troubled past and as a result, is often a very high target for vandalism and sometimes even sockpuppetry. However meaningful and sourced additions from unregistered users should have the ability to add on to it. So I am hereby requesting the least strict form of protection, in permanent pending changes protection. If you could do this for the article, that would be highly appreciated by me and many more hardcore contributors to this specific topic. Thanks for your consideration! B. M. L. Template:Infobox outbreak is currently template-editor protected. At just 555 transclusions this seems excessive. Module:Medical cases chart is only extended-confirmed protected which I think would be more appropriate. The talk page is quite active with suggested changes so I think it would be helpful to widen the pool of people who can edit it. As you protected it would you consider a downgrade? Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Thank you today for Chandler's Ford shooting, introduced: "This is a slightly thinner article, on a slightly more recent subject, than I normally bring here but I've had little luck in attracting feedback (though I'm grateful to SchroCat for casting an eye and helping to dig up some more sources). It's part of my back-burner project on British police shootings. This one wasn't especially controversial in that the people shot were pointing a loaded handgun at a security guard, but police shootings in Britain are few and far between so they always attract plenty of attention and they're the subject of some academic study. This one raised some interesting questions about police tactics, being a pre-planned operation with the stated aim of apprehending the robbers. Also of note is that the whole event was caught on video by the police, and (somewhat sensationally) the video of the shooting was later played in court at the trial of the surviving gang members."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:33, 24 August 2021 (UTC)

Floquenbeam, It's 1001 days but it doesn't display properly because of a change to MediaWiki a few years ago! :) In other words, an arbitrarily long duration that's more than a year and less than forever because we're not supposed to indef IPs. Floquenbeam, it used to display as "1001 days" and it makes me a little bit sad that it doesn't any more, but the slightly garbled duration is still amusing I suppose. I'm good, thanks. I try to stick to writing articles and blocking vandals on the wiki these days and leave the politics to others. I got a promotion at work a few months ago so I've not had the time to be on-wiki as much as I'd like. I've got a few days off and the mrs is working so I'm trying to finish off a back-burner project and procrastinating by clearing out AIV! Hope things are okay with you? Hello, Harry. I just dropped by to say how just like old times it has been over the last day or so, seeing your messages at AIV, which I haven't seen for years, but which remind me of far off days, when you practically lived at AIV. What an interesting coincidence that when I got here I found this conversation about your 1001 night blocks, because they are the thing which has most stuck in my memory about you from all those years ago. (Well, apart from hats, which I won't mention, because I promised you I wouldn't.) Floquenbeam, I remember when Harry's blocks stopped showing up as 1001 days, and switched to the bizarre kind of thing you noticed, about ten years or so back. I assumed it was an accidental side effect of some software change, but I met one of the developers at a meetup, and he told me it was quite deliberate. He also explained why it had been done, but I'm afraid at the end of it I could only think of what Byron once wrote about Coleridge: "I wish he would explain his explanation." Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.
