Article Cats

Hi Grimes. Article Categories are often ordered in a very odd way, aren't they? I have always assumed that alphabetic order is the goal. Perhaps re-ordering would be something best left to an automatic bot script? What you you think? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:38, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

Especially articles with a huge amount of Categories are hard to read and should be in alphabetic order. An automatic bot script would be nice.Grimes2 (talk) 12:57, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

I'll see if I can find a noticeboard to ask about this. I'm sure it must have been considered before. The advice given at Wikipedia:FAQ/Categorization is this: "Both the alphabet and importance are used to order categories currently." Which sounds like a bit of a contradiction to me. Confessing that "my" articles typically have only few categories: I try to sort them rather by relevance. For a conductor who also teaches, Conductor goes first, for a musicologist who occasionally conducts, Academic goes first. - The other day, in a navbox, someone sorted compositions (Brahms) by alphabet, instead of the chronological order they had been in, - made no sense to me, but I reverted only once. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:19, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi Gerda. I found a 2014 discussion here, which concluded "Clearly a bad task for a bot, as shown by the consensus below. No further action needed." So it has to be done manually, it seems. I wrote about several operas recently that I didn't see, and about one that I saw (and met the composer who came to a normal performance), and about a staged work that is no opera. I wanted to nominate it for DYK but - sorry - too late, + too short. However, we'd have three more days for Babylon. Can you find one catchy quote from the NY Times, to use for that? (Has to be in the article, with the ref behind it.) For the other quotes: consider to have the German original also, in brackets.

Expense is important, - how about something more related to plot / book by philospher / music / megalopolis / Seven? - If quoting Die Welt, I'd deliver the German original also, in brackets. About number seven: "The number seven — the seven-day week is apparently of Babylonian origin — is an organizing principle of the opera." (loomis) There are also quotes for the other things, but I can't cite nearly the whole article, because of copyright issues.

Can't find any sources for the Frankfurt theatre. So it's better to leave it as it is. There is no decision for making a new construction of the opera somewhere else, or a total renovation. Please do not mark books by Stephen Wolfram as self-published (example). While it's true that Stephen Wolfram owns Wolfram Media and they publish his books (along with books by other mathematicians), they are not a vanity publisher. And regardless, according to WP:V: "Self-published expert sources may be considered reliable when produced by an established expert on the subject matter, whose work in the relevant field has previously been published by reliable, independent publications." Carbon footprint & multiple edits

Hello, I'm about to speak from my carbon footprint soapbox, for which I apologise in advance, but it needs to be said (and this happens a lot on wikipedia). If possible, it would be advisable to do edits on a given page in one go, rather than multiple small edits that cause the carbon footprint of wikipedia to snowball. For example, I saw that you recently did 96 edits on the Emmanuelle Charpentier page in the last 24 hours. That is more edits than in the previous 2.5 years of the history of her page. Each edit takes up approximately 34K bytes of data space. 96 x 34K bytes = 3264K bytes, or 3.264 MB of data space. Data server space is not free, and takes up a lot of energy (rather like bitcoin). I would alternatively suggest copying the parent text of the most recent edit into a separate off-wikipedia text file, doing all the edits there, and then pasting the final revised version back, in one go.
I certainly don't claim to be perfect in that regard, but it troubles me in general to see such profligate use of server data space. A smaller example is your other set of edits on the Klaus Mäkelä page just today, which could have all been done in one edit rather than 4. I'm sorry for sounding like a nag, but the environmental impact of the internet is one of my long-standing concerns. Thanks for reading, DJRafe (talk) 19:08, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

Marina de Gabaráin

Thank you for sorting out the references section, which had got a little messy - and for your other contributions, too. I have now had the opportunity to check out the subject's entry in Kutsch/Riemens, and (as I've also shared with Gerda Arendt) I was disappointed to find many significant errors, both small and major. That unfortunately tends to be the case with non-Spanish reference works, when it comes to treatment of Hispanic subjects, of course: the Sagarmínaga article (on which I based the chronology of the article) is not without one or two problems, but as a source on Spanish singers - especially when it comes to basic birth/death dates - I've found it to be extremely reliable.

It would be interesting to find out where the "1925" alleged d.o.b. came from. I suspect, from the singer herself around the time of her international fame, but that's mere speculation! Practically and logically (given that she enrolled at the RCM here in London around 1946, after training in Italy and Paris) we'd be questioning it anyway, even without Sagarmínaga's very clear 1917. Best, I think, to flag up the discrepancy (as we have) without being swayed by the German lexicon, and leave it at that. Zarzuelauk (talk) 08:36, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

Using the {{cite journal}} ref template for the first time I noticed that the ref was displayed as it is now you've changed it, in other words, showing no 'p' for page number (as in {{cite book}}. That was the reason why I added the 'p' myself. Can you advise an alternative template or attribute to use for this to display correctly? To me, it looks a bit strange as it now is. you need reliable sources. The letters are primary source, but you need secondary literature. The Guardian article for example is a reliable source. I think, Chopin is only suspected to be homoerotic. I don't know, where you can get an officially third opinion. Maybe one of the guys of the Arbitration Committee?
