Anboto Group

Hi GoingBatty, we thank you very much for your suggestions and improvements to Anboto Group. We have added links to this page from related articles. Thank you, we hope is now ok. Fresnocom (talk) 15:34, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

You're welcome! I see you're continuing to make improvements to the Anboto Group article. Today I cleaned up the infobox for you, and will look at it again later. GoingBatty (talk) 16:09, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

i want off this list of crap and false lies most everything i read here is false i refuse to add anymore so delete my account now so in return fuck you and have a nice day. keith woosley god of thunder

Hi Keith - When I made this edit and requested the deletion of Template:All Wrestling Network, I apologize for not explaining sufficiently that I did so because your edits broke the functionality of the infobox on WBXK-CA.
Per Wikipedia:Username policy#Deleting an account, "It is not possible to delete user accounts, as all contributions must be assigned to some identifier; either a username or an IP address. Editors seeking privacy per their right to vanish can have their accounts renamed and their user pages and (in some cases) user talk pages deleted." If you like, I would be happy to request the deletion of the pictures of yourself that you posted.
Your edit history show your interest in wrestling (and based on the size of your championship belt, you must be good at it too!) If you decide to return, you may find it more rewarding to start conversations on the article discussion pages, or collaborate with the editors at Wikipedia:WikiProject Professional wrestling. You could share your knowledge and let others who understand the not-very-user-friendly Wikipedia interface edit the articles.

TypoScan

First afternoon did 10% of the dump, for 10,000 matches, 2nd afternoon upto 50%, another 15000 matches. I'd guess upto or around 50k articles in total... Reedy (talk) 22:12, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Reedy - thanks for your work on this. In AWB SVN 7906, I loaded the TypoScan plugin and clicked on Make list, but no articles were added to my list. Does your dump have to complete processing before we can see the results? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 00:50, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Cleaning with AWB

You may want to check on any scripts you use as it accidently removed the title from a reference of Dragon Warrior rather than adding the missing equals sign.Jinnai 20:26, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jinnai. AWB alerted me that there was an invalid parameter in the GameInformer reference due to the missing equal sign. Since the title parameter was in the GameInformer reference twice, I intentionally removed the redundancy. GoingBatty (talk) 20:32, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Project tagging question

Hi! Thanks again for generating the wonderful lists for the Museums Wikiproject. I have a question that I'm not sure if you'd know the answer to, but I wanted to try in case you did. Is there an easy way to tag the museums with the project? I know there are oodles of scripts like Twinkle, but I don't really know scripts. Just trying to work out if there's something easier than bugging a bot that I could do while clicking through to the article to see if it fits. Thanks! StarM 16:49, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi StarM - glad you're enjoying the lists. Category:WikiProject tagging bots shows many bots that can tag article talk pages. I suggest you continue asking to Wikipedia:Bot requests to find someone who has expertise in that area who can help you out. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 17:27, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip! Have a good day StarM 17:37, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

bot's removal of "orphan" tag

why is this bot removing the "orphan" maintenance tag (template:orphan; or, in this case, the variation included in the template:multiple issues) from an article with only three articles linking to it. do i not understand the spirit of "orphan"?

example: store-within-a-store – edits [1] and [2] regards.--96.232.126.111 (talk) 06:36, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

The Template:Orphan documentation says "This template should only be put on articles which meet the orphan criteria." which states "An article is orphaned if no other articles link to it. It is recommended to only place the {{orphan}} tag if the article has ZERO incoming links from other articles. Although a single, relevant incoming link is sufficient to remove the tag, three or more is ideal and will help ensure the article is reachable to readers." BattyBot uses AutoWikiBrowser, which has general fixes set up so it "Removes {{Orphan}} if article has more than 2 incoming links."
I just used the Find link tool to create ten more links to store-within-a-store, so there should be no question about its orphan status in the future. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 15:19, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited M.D.N.A., you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Questions & Answers (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Jennifer O'Neill

Hi....I am new... Could you explain your edits just before mine on the actress Jennifer O'Neill article. What is the AWB ? and what does it do? I am just trying to learn. And do I look for your response on your usertalk page, or on mine, or in my email? Sorry to be so stupid. Thanks. Taninao0126 (talk) 14:44, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Taninao - welcome to Wikipedia! Just because your new doesn't mean your questions are stupid. Asking questions is a great way to learn, and I'm happy to help. I'm sorry my edit summary didn't sufficently explain what I was trying to do with this edit. AWB stands for AutoWikiBrowser, a piece of software "designed to make tedious repetitive tasks quicker and easier" which "suggests some changes (typically formatting) that are generally meant to be incidental to the main change." (See Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser for further information. The "AWB" link in the edit summary takes you to the same page.) So here's an explanation for this edit:
  • I used AWB to generate a list of all the articles that contained the misspelling "Liza Minelli" (including Jennifer O'Neill), and changed each article to use the correct spelling: "Liza Minnelli". That's the main reason for this edit.
  • AWB alerted me to the fact that the cite book template for Surviving Myself was not complete, so I manually added the |title= parameter. This enabled the text Surviving Myself to be visible for Reference 1 at the bottom of the article.
  • Based on a set of rules called general fixes (also linked in my edit summary), AWB made the following other minor corrections (which don't change the way the article is displayed on the screen):
  1. Removed the unnecessary underscore from the link to Vogue magazine
  2. Changed the {{cn}} templates to {{citation needed}} and {{imdb name}} to {{IMDb name}} to avoid redirects
  3. Changed the citation templates to use |year= instead of |date= when a month & day are not specified
  • I also created a rule in my version of AWB to remove the "Metadata: see Wikipedia:Persondata" comment in the {{Persondata}} template, which is no longer needed (but doesn't change the way the article is displayed on the screen).
Some people would choose to post this reply on your talk page. I like keeping the conversation all on the same talk page so it's easier to follow. I will add a note on your talk page to let you know I've replied.
Please let me know if I can provide any further assistance. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:08, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Great !! Thanks for the info / explanation. I wish everyone was as helpful as you. Some folks don't even bother to answer at all. This place is just filled with all these abbreviations for stuff I have absolutely no idea of what it is or means. As to this article, I am completing my research and hope to have all the "citations needed" missing pieces available very soon, maybe I can send them to you. When I fill them in, who reviews it and takes off the "citations need" flagging headnote at the beginning of the article?

Thanks again. Taninao0126 (talk) 18:22, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

My pleasure! Even though some editors use code (or forget to be civil), don't be discouraged - there are plenty of others who are happy to help.
I see you've done a lot of work on this article. As for removing the templates from the top of the article, per Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, you can remove each template yourself when that particular issue have been resolved. If someone disagrees, they'll revert your edit and add them back. If you disagree, then you can discuss the issues on Talk:Jennifer O'Neill and come to a consensus on how the article can be further improved.
I've added the article to my watchlist, and will keep an eye on it. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 18:34, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

BattyBot suggestions

Hi, BattyBot changed {{Unreferenced}} to {{Refimprove}} in this edit, perhaps because there was a Ref or References tag present, but these were actually just footnotes to a track listing, not citations. I suggest that BattyBot should not make this change where the Ref or References tag includes a group= parameter.

It also removed blank lines between tracks. These are not essential but are helpful when editing, which is probably why they are included both in the documentation of Template:Track listing and in the various presets which are listed at the foot of that page. Again, it would be appreciated if you could stop BattyBot removing blank lines within {{track listing}}. – Fayenatic (talk) 18:31, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Fayenatic! I agree with your two suggestions, and filed two bug reports for AutoWikiBrowser:
Thanks for the suggestions! GoingBatty (talk) 18:54, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
The AWB developers agreed that these are bugs, and fixed them - see:
I look forward to getting the next version of AWB, which will have these fixes. Thanks again! GoingBatty (talk) 23:44, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
FYI, I'm now running a version of AWB with these fixes included. GoingBatty (talk) 04:43, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I had no idea it would be so quick and apparently easy. I'll see if I can raise some further points myself. – Fayenatic (talk) 13:39, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Ah. One of my concerns, raised at Wikipedia talk:Citing sources#Spaces within citations, is very similar to one that was just rejected with your consent at Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Bugs/Archive 20#citation whitespace removal goes the wrong way. Mind you, that request was probably overly ambitious. Do you think it is worth me raising specific bug reports for removal of whitespace before the closing </ref>, and before/after pipes within citations? – Fayenatic (talk) 13:53, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, the AWB developers usually respond quickly, but I have many bugs still open, and others that have been rejected or moved to feature requests. I've noticed that the developers like to see consensus before changing AWB, as they rightfully don't want to do anything that will cause a controversy. In the two cases above, I included links to the relevant section of the MOS or the template documentation showing that consensus was already established, and AWB was not adhering to the consensus. Since the developers don't intentionally design AWB to go against consensus, I considered these bugs.
Edits that are just whitespace addition or removal do cause controversy if they don't impact how the article is rendered. Some people feel such edits "clog" watchlists, and should not be done with automated or semi-automated tools. With no established consensus, some people will be upset if whitespace is added, and others will be upset if whitespace is removed. Unless you can reference a part of the MOS that AWB is not adhering to, my guess is I don't think they'll consider it a bug, and I don't think it will be a popular feature request. Nomination of Central Provident Fund (South Africa) for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Central Provident Fund (South Africa) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Central Provident Fund (South Africa) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article.

Thanks for letting me know, but I don't have a passion for this article one way or the other. I believe when I made this edit I was simply working through the backlog of uncategorized articles. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 17:36, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

My Newbie Observations / Comments

As a "newbie" I have learned rather quickly (and which I really should not have expected any differently) that this place is really just a microcosm of life and people in general. Some people are just very, very nice helpful and great folks. There are others who are total jerks and arrogant assholes I waste my time with like arguing with a table. The trick is to discern the difference and not be like the latter. Taninao0126 (talk) 13:30, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

I'd say that's a pretty accurate statement. Most are in the middle - people who have good intentions and are trying to do the right thing to improve the articles, but may not sufficiently explain their intentions in the small edit summary box. (For example, when your change from "O'Neill" to "Jennifer O'Neill" was reverted, the editor mentioned the "MOS". It would have been more helpful if he provided a link to WP:LASTNAME instead.) Another challenge is that by communicating via wiki we don't have the benefit of seeing each others' facial expressions and hear each others' tone, which is a large part of how we interpret communication.
There have been times when I've gotten so upset that I've found it best to just walk away from the computer for a while. After a while, I've found that when I start a conversation at another editor's talk page or at an article talk page, most everyone remembers WP:CIVIL. If not, then I move on to work on one of the other 3,860,024 articles.
Hope you stick with it, and let me know how I can help. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 17:31, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Dead end pages

BattyBot is removing template:Dead end tags where they clearly should be, such as Pasig river rehabilitation (one link) or Shift-share analysis (no links). The template says "This article needs more links to other articles to help integrate it into the encyclopedia." It's basically a more specific version of template:Wikify... Why is it untagging them indiscriminately? Skullers (talk) 00:41, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Skullers! Each article has one wikilink (see the References section of Shift-share analysis), and User:BattyBot states it will "Remove {{Dead end}} from articles with at least one wikilink". This is one of AutoWikiBrowser's general fixes. Dead-end pages are defined as those that have "no internal links to other Wikipedia articles." Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 00:52, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
But how is that helpful? If somebody manually tagged a page, it's there for a reason. It's basically a more specific version of the Wikify template... What is the purpose of this task? Just emptying a category? Skullers (talk) 01:13, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
The purpose of the task is to remove the template on those articles that no longer need it - either because the person who tagged it did so in error, or someone else fixed it after it was tagged. I've added wikilinks to both of the articles. GoingBatty (talk) 01:17, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
But they do need it.. they are tagged because, like the template says, they need more wikilinks, not just zero links.. The tag in Twinkle says: "{{dead end}}: article has few or no links to other articles". Same as template:orphan with few or no incoming links... Tagging a large |article with one or two links is not in error... Skullers (talk) 01:55, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
Seems that the text in Template:Dead end is not consistent with the definition in Wikipedia:Dead-end pages. If you want to start a discussion on either of their talk pages that results in a consensus consistent with your belief, I'll be happy to suggest that the AWB developers update the software accordingly. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 02:07, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
Now that was downright hostile. Ain't arsed. Skullers (talk) 02:39, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
Sorry - was meant to be helpful, not hostile. I'll start the conversation at Template talk:Dead end for you. GoingBatty (talk) 03:03, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Re: Actress Jennifer O'Neill article I finally got the citations done, very specific, verifiable, and correct. Do I do this right? Please advise, or correct what needs to be.....THANKS !!! Taninao0126 (talk) 19:55, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Taninao - the article looks much better than the last time I saw it. I made a few minor changes. If you have titles and authors for the People and New York Times articles, that would be good information to add. It would also be helpful to add another sentence or two in the lede (the first paragraph) to summarize why O'Neill is notable. Keep up the good work! GoingBatty (talk) 02:15, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi....me again...a question re: the actress Jennifer O'Neill article. When you did a citation check, it resulted in two cites becoming "unreliable". Could you tell me how this happened ? Because now, another user has retagged the article as having "Multiple issues" I suspect because of the unreliable citation issue, which tag I removed when I cleaned up the cites, at least I thought so.... Help !!!!! thanks.... Taninao0126 Taninao0126 (talk) 15:38, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Using the "View history" tab on an article, you can see the changes each editor made to the article. My edits on February 6 were these. It was User:WikiDan61 who added the "unreliable source" notes in this edit by using the {{rs}} template.
I see you added a sentence about O'Neill's notability in the "Early life" section. WikiDan61 moved it to the lede paragraph in this edit where it belongs.
Keep up the good work! GoingBatty (talk) 17:12, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

FYI: Hi...me again, just so you know the revert and "multiple issues tag" was done by a wikiuser names MikeWazowski, so I sent him this:

References don't use the term

Hi Batty,

The article is about a pejorative term, "Dal Khor," but this term is not mentioned in the references cited. In other words, they are not references, at least not for this article. I don't know why they were put there, and I'm not editing the article. Pseudofusulina (talk) 02:13, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation. I've added {{irrelevant citation}} to each reference, and changed {{unreferenced}} to {{unreliable sources}}, so the next bot doesn't make the same edit. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 02:22, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Usually the bots don't revert a human editor who has reverted a bot, so I don't worry about it. That should be fine, though, your edits. Thanks. Pseudofusulina (talk) 02:25, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Help !!! Please Help !! No pun intended but....I AM REALLY GOING BATTY NOW

Re: The Jennifer O'Neill article, I need some help....please, no pun on your name, but I really am JUST GOING BATTY. There is another user MikeWaznowski who keeps undoing my edits, and maintenance tagging the article for three reasons (as you can see). I have tried to communicate with him, and attempted to SPECIFICALLY address the issues he raised, alas, with no consensus. He does NOT tell me how to change it / what he finds objectionable and I keep going around in circles. I have even asked him to make those changes HIMSELF. But he has threatened to edit block me, and tag me for conflict of interest .... Huh????

I have requested editor assistance because I want to get a third party involved, since ABSOLUTELY NOTHING I do seems to satisfy him; it seems to be getting personal with him now...., and I do not know why. I sincerely think that ANYTHING I DO to cure his "defects, issues" will never, ever satisfy him. You know, it is very easy to delete, destroy, be negative, and I think people do that just because they can. It takes more time and effort to be positively constructive AS YOU HAVE MOST GENEROUSLY BEEN !! (THANKS !!!!!!)

I can see from his own talk page @ MikeWiznowski that other users have had questions of him from his edits / reverts of various articles, and in a number of cases, he just ignores them, does not answer and is of no help at all.

See: Jennifer O'Neill article talkpage: Taninao0126 and talkpage: MikeWaznowski

My question to you?: Can YOU please ask him what needs to be done so that tags can come off, and we all can move on and just leave it the way it is ? Please ?? And then get back to me to please tell me what to do. As you can see, other editors have not had any issues AT ALL with my edits. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer. Catscan and the notability tag inside a multiple issue box

I have reverted several of your bot edits in the category Martial Arts by breaking out the notability tag so that Catscan can find the articles with notability issues. In the case of the Jon Bluming article, you have now manually reverted my reverts with the comment "Catscan can find Category:All articles with topics of unclear notability whether {{notability}} is in Multiple issues or not".[3]

When I run Catscan on the category martial arts searching for notability tags[4], it finds 80 articles, not including Jon Bluming.

When I run Catscan on the category martial arts intersecting with category All_articles_with_topics_of_unclear_notability[5], it finds the same 80 articles.

When I look directly in category:All_articles_with_topics_of_unclear_notability [6] or [7], I do not find the Jon Bluming article (even thought the multiple issues box has a notability tag).[8]

Could you tell me what I am misunderstanding here? Thanks! jmcw (talk) 11:25, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi jmcw - You're absolutely correct! I've posted at Template talk:Multiple issues#Please fix categorization of .22notability.22 parameter to request that an administrator fixes the {{Multiple issues}} template. Sorry for presuming that the Multiple issues template was set up correctly without confirming it. GoingBatty (talk) 11:43, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi GoingBatty. Just noticed your bot made this diff under task 4, but maybe the code could be improved, because although the article uses <ref> tags, these are just notes, which do not reference any of the asserted information. Thank you. - Cloudz679 05:44, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Some UDel football seasons...

I know you're a UDel football fan, so I was wondering if you'd have interest in creating any or all the 1946, 1963, 1971, 1972, 1979, and 2003 season articles? As you can see on {{Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens football navbox}}, those are the most prominently displayed seasons since they were all national championship years. If you do have interest in making some of these, be sure to include Category:College football national champions on each of the articles. Thoughts? Jrcla2 (talk) 15:02, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I saw that you have been making some "rational" changes to the article on Thomas Hodges. I am a gallerist with a gallery that represents Hodges in Taiwan. I was asked to add links to the Hodges article to enable the "orphaned" tag to be removed, which I note you did (thank you). Since doing this, the article has come under attack from an editor name "Hoary", who seems to have a bias against the article. I am not competent to edit this article to the degree that is now required, whilst at the same time having to counter Mr. Hoary's reciprocation. Would you be willing to edit this article in full or can you tell me how I can source an experienced Wikipedia editor to do this? Thank you in anticipation Expoarts (talk) 06:30, 18 February 2012 (UTC).

Hi Expoarts! I'm assuming that Hoary was acting in good faith by requesting independent reliable sources that directly support the information in an article. To add references, I first read the references that existed on the page, and used them for other sections of the article. I then used Google to find more by doing searches such as "Thomas Hodges" "Met Art" and looking for results that were not copied from Wikipedia or Hodges' web site. Hope this helps! GoingBatty (talk) 15:39, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
I'm glad you've begun a dialog directly with Hoary. If you want to continue to discuss improving Hodges' article, I suggest you use Talk:Thomas Hodges (artist), where other interested editors can join the conversation. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 15:43, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
I really appreciate your reply and the work you have done. I'm afraid that I'm not adequately competent when it comes to editing Wikipedia content, plus I don't really have the time. The British Museum of Erotic Arts closed due to lack of funding, which is why the link is now dead. As such, I presume it is best to remove it Expoarts (talk) 16:10, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. Wikipedia:Link rot states "do not delete a URL solely because the URL does not work any longer. Recovery and repair options and tools are available." The Wayback Machine archived the web page, so I added the archive URL to the reference. Having done that, those more knowledgable than I may decide that a closed museum is not notable. GoingBatty (talk) 16:38, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
Ok, thank you. I reversed some changes made by TheMindsEye, who misunderstood a "Nominee Award" as being only a "nomination". In both the Spider Awards and the Color Awards (Masters Cup), "Nominee Award" is an award in its own right, in addition to being a nomination. It was actually correct as written, prior to edit. Also, this TheMindsEye made this edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Thomas_Hodges_(artist)&diff=477589078&oldid=477588575. The link removed is an essential reference to one of the artist's gallery representations, and should be shown, but apparently it needs to be referenced in the article? I have no idea how to reinstate this? Thanks for the additional help Expoarts (talk) 05:39, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

In this edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Thomas_Hodges_(artist)&diff=475683440&oldid=475680891, categories such as "British Artist" and "British Photographers" were removed, yet Hodges seems to fit both of these categories. Is it not permisible to list the additional categories, despite them being relevant? Also, the short description says "Photographer of Nudes", which not really inaccurate Expoarts (talk) 05:54, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

Hoary made this edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Thomas_Hodges_(artist)&diff=475688211&oldid=475687953, stating "being profiled in a blog is no big deal; for a start, cutting unsourced claims of this)". However, neither Art2Bank or Nonenga Art Magazine are blogs, they are established and globally recognised art related websites. Should these references have been deleted? Expoarts (talk) 06:03, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

In this edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Thomas_Hodges_(artist)&diff=475732435&oldid=475732193, it is stated "deleting mention of one website for which the "source" pointed to other people's porn/erotic photos but not Hodges')", but Hodges' work is featured in this website (I just browsed the website and saw it). However, the site is in flash and you can't link directly to the page where the work is shown, as it is constantly changing, as this site is updated. Should the link be reinstated, or must the page point directly to Hodges? Expoarts (talk) 06:10, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

In the article, citations are requested for the section relating to inspirations. On Hodges' own website he quotes on his biography page his inspirations. However, I understand that it is not allowed to reference the artist's own website (ref Hoary: "No, no, you can't source claims for the man's achievements to his own website or blog. Independent sourcing, please."). However, as it is only Hodges himself who can state who and what inspires him, how can a citation other than that from the artist himself be used? Am I correct to assume that it needs to be the artist's statement via an independent source? Expoarts (talk) 06:26, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

Hoary made this edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Thomas_Hodges_(artist)&diff=475691356&oldid=475689005, stating "(Removing commentary that was merely from an unsigned piece in a commercial website. Judge for yourself: http://www.lovechess.nl/artoflove/archives/photography_nude/). However, "Art of Love" is widely recognised review site of artists working in the erotic-nude genre, and carry an archive featuring some very prominent artists (follow the home link at the foot of the referenced page and then to archives). Why therefore is this reference not relevant and the subject of deletion? Expoarts (talk) 06:26, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

The reference to GQ magazine points to (2) which relates to the IPA, this is the better reference: http://www.gq-magazin.de/unterhaltung/girls-gallery/thomas-hodges7, which I found via Google. Would you make the change? The Playboy reference, also points to (2), but that publication is in physical print, so no online reference is available. The reference previously pointed to a scanned copy of Playboy magazine, via Hodges' blog, but that was deleted. Expoarts (talk) 06:35, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Expoarts - I think it would be best to discuss these issues with TheMindsEye and Hoary on Talk:Thomas Hodges (artist), as I'm not an expert on which of these should be considered reliable sources. Therefore, I'll copy these points to the article talk page. GoingBatty (talk) 16:16, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

BattyBot + Wikify tags

I noticed that BattyBot removed the "Wikify" tag from Ruth Gledhill. Is it possible to configure the bot not to remove wikify tags? As I said in this discussion, I think that this tag is far too subtle to be removed automatically. I rarely allow AWB to add or remove the tag, and that's when I have the article in front of me. In this case, the tag is explained in the edit summary of the edit which added the tag, and the problem has not been addressed. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:17, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi John! I could turn off the Auto tag feature, but that would also prevent other actions, such as the addition of {{orphan}}, {{deadend}}, and {{wikify}}. In this specific case, I think that the edit which added the tag was incorrect - the edit summary indicates that {{citation style}} would have been more appropriate. I've updated the references, which I hope addresses this article's issue. If it still needs to be wikified, I hope an editor will use the |reason= parameter when adding {{wikify}}. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 14:59, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

List of rock instrumentals

I have a question. Why did you "disambiguate" There and Back as an instrumental CD on the Rock Instrumental page. As far I know, Wired, Blow By Blow and There and Back are the only completely instrumental releases by Jeff Beck, but you removed There And Back. Have you ever listened to it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Areyoureadyeddy (talkcontribs) 04:47, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Areyoureadyeddy! When you added the link in this edit, the link went to the page There And Back. This is a disambiguation page which lists several albums, TV shows, and books with a title similar to There and Back. In my edit I fixed the link so it takes the user to There and Back (Jeff Beck album), but ensured that it still appears to the user as There and Back.
Please note that I did NOT remove There and Back from List of rock instrumentals. If you go to the article you'll see it's still listed. Since I have never listened to the album, it would be inappropriate for me to remove it from the list. All I did was fix the link for you. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:12, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Actually, it was gone and I had to put it back in. I did this before I asked you the question. Areyoureadyeddy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Areyoureadyeddy (talkcontribs) 18:36, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Just a brief question, re: wiki page rankings in a google search

Hi...just a brief question re: Jennifer O'neill article. Do the wiki maintenance tags have the negative effect of tagging the article for deletion or negative in some respect ?

I noticed that now when "Jennifer O'Neill" is typed in to a Google search query, this wiki article was almost always there second or third at least behind her official webpage. Now, it does not come up AT ALL. Is there something you can tell that someone has done to cause this change in its page rankings?

And if so, how can its high page rankings be restored ? This may be too technical and beyond me, but I have to ask. thank you. Taninao0126 (talk) 20:38, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Taninao. The maintenance tags on Jennifer O'Neill are not requesting deletion of the article from Wikipedia. They're only asking passionate editors such as yourself to add third-party references and make the text more encyclopedic.
Don't know why the article isn't showing up on the first few pages of Google's results - even if you search for "Jennifer O'Neill" site:en.wikipedia.org. It could be the maintenance tags, or it could be something else. This page on Google's web site would be a good place to start to find out more about their page rankings. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 05:09, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm puzzled that Cale discography has been tagged as an orphan. It's just a discography, a list of records, but those records are full of wiki-links where appropriate. I'm unsure how this discography can be rendered less "orphaned". I felt like removing the tag but thought I should check with you. Best wishes Mick gold (talk) 19:02, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Mick! The orphan template at the top of the article has a link to Wikipedia:Orphan, which defines an orphan as "a page with few or no links from other pages." So an orphan has to do with links TO the article, not wikilinks in the article. Special:WhatLinksHere/John Cale discography shows that John Cale is the only article that links to John Cale discography. When I tagged the article as an orphan in this edit in May 2010, my guess is that I had not yet set up AWB to only tag articles as orphans that have zero incoming links. Since it's unlikely that there will be other articles that should link to the discography, I removed the orphan template from the article. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 00:05, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi GoingBatty, thanks for responding. Glad you removed it, and happy editing. Mick gold (talk) 18:46, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Recent BRFA

Hi GoingBatty. I was looking through some recent BRFAs and saw that your bot had one approved to "change {{Unreferenced}} to {{BLP sources}}</nowiki> if article is in Category:Living people". My understanding is that if a BLP article is unreferenced it should use {{BLP unsourced}}, which specifies that there are no sources in the article, not {{BLP sources}}, which specifies that it needs additional references (implying there is already at least one reference). So, am I way off base here, or do your bot and BRFA need to be changed to using {{BLP unsourced}}? Jenks24 (talk) 11:59, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jenks24! You're right: {{Unreferenced}} should be changed to {{BLP unsourced}}. I see that I made a typo in Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/BattyBot 8 and typed {{BLP sources}} in error. However, the AWB general fix that User:BattyBot uses is to change "{{Unreferenced}} to {{BLP unsourced}} if article is in Category:Living people". Sorry about the confusion! GoingBatty (talk) 13:12, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
That's great, thanks for clearing things up for me. Should a note be made at the BRFA (or somewhere else)? Jenks24 (talk) 13:17, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
I agree a note should be made - see Wikipedia talk:Bots/Requests for approval#Typo in BattyBot 8 request. GoingBatty (talk) 13:31, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
This has been fixed in the Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/BattyBot 8 - thanks for bringing this to my attention. GoingBatty (talk) 16:27, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
Glad it could be fixed so quickly. Cheers, Jenks24 (talk) 02:21, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Thank you

Thanks for editing List of professional cyclists who died during a race. I wanted to mention that one of the fixes that AWB did was actually incorrect. The title of this column is "1950's Biographies - Dave Bedwell" not "1950s Biographies - Dave Bedwell". Wanted to let you know that I've reverted your change of this reference's title back to it actual name.
The List is in the middle of a major restructuring into Tables so some mistakes have slipped by - your AWB caught Dusseldorf/Düsseldorf and Triathalon/Triathlon. In looking over your AWB changes I figured out that I had to clean up an extra 'ref name'. Please continue to take an interest in this List...I am considering possibly putting it up for Featured List status and need all the help I can get! Cheers, Shearonink (talk) 03:07, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Shearonink - thanks for the note, and for letting me know about my mistake. This was one of my find & replace rules (not standard AWB functionality), and I should have checked the source. Looking over the article again, I found another instance of "triathalon" that I changed. I also made the date format consistent throughout the article and made some other minor changes. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 03:27, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Quite an appropriate name for BattyBot

Twice now BattyBot has changed categories to links at User:AussieLegend/Newcastle International Sports Centre with the edit summary "changed article categories to links per WP:USERNOCAT using AWB". WP:USERNOCAT does not say to change cats to links at all. It says "If you copy an article from mainspace to userspace and it already contains categories, remove them or comment them out". Since the cats at User:AussieLegend/Newcastle International Sports Centre are commented out per WP:USERNOCAT BattyBot shouldn't be making the changes. It really needs to check for comment tags around cats. --AussieLegend (talk) 06:31, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Continuing from User talk:BattyBot

First, I apologize for my initial edit on User talk:BattyBot rather than here. I didn't notice the notice at the top of that page (I would recommend an editnotice). Feel free to move this to unite it with the previous discussion.

Thanks for adding <pre>. I tried other methods, and for me it's by far the best method of disabling categories. (If I understand how the bot finds pages to edit, it should only go to pages containing inappropriate active article categories, which my userspace pages never do.)

As for intentionally redlinked categories, I have seen various ones around, but I don't know how prevalent the practice is, and I think there's no need for the bot to make a special effort to deal with them. Users can always slap on an appropriate {{bots}} to prevent future changes. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 09:52, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

I'll have to play around with the editnotice - thanks for the link!
I usually run the bot by specifying a specific category. It's when I've tried to run the bot against all pages with {{user sandbox}} or {{userspace draft}} that has caused me problems, which I won't do again until I can figure out a resolution to the last issue posted on BattyBot's talk page.
Thanks again! GoingBatty (talk) 17:20, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

your Jennifer O'Neill undo of another's revision to my deletion

Hi.... I recently discovered that "Soul DNA" was written by another Jennifer O'Neill with the same name ( was researching it to try to possibly buy it) anyway I discovered it was some psychic with the same name, so deleted it from her list of books AND I EXPLAINED THE REVISION, DELETION, but someone undid it and put it back anyway even after I explained it.... and then you CORRECTLY reverted that person's put back (you and I were both right ... but you were better perhaps in including an amazon reference, maybe i shud have) I wonder why people keep doing stuff like that .... it seems that they do changes just for the sake of doing changes .... kind of frustrating ...sometimes it is better to just leave well enough alone .... Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Engineering Community Manager 05:00, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Curious about the adding of this to Category:Articles containing Croatian language text . Why is it there, and what does it do? All the best, Rich Farmbrough, 19:20, 11 May 2012 (UTC).

Hi Rich. The {{polluted category}} template prevents the category from being listed on Wikipedia:Database reports/Polluted categories. For each article category on the report (e.g. Category:Living people), I comment out the category if it's contained on a user sandbox page. For article categories created by templates, such as Category:Articles containing Croatian language text, there's not much that can be done. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 01:41, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
Ah got it. The correct fix - it seems to me (in this case) is to change the {{Lang}} template to only categorise articles. I'm out for the day, though. If I'm still an admin tomorrow, I'll try to find time to look at it. Rich Farmbrough, 11:30, 15 May 2012 (UTC).

In Utero edit

Why should the optional parameters of the cite news template be removed, like you did to In Utero (album)? Dan56 (talk) 04:52, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Dan56! I was trying to make the citation consitent with the rest of the references in the article. I apologize for not referencing Template:Cite news#Optional parameters in my edit summary, which states:
  • location: City of publication (e.g., "Toronto" for The Globe and Mail) should be included if the city of publication is not part of the name of the newspaper
  • publisher: The publisher that publishes the news source (not to be used for the name of the news source itself; see the newspaper parameter). This is commonly omitted for major publications. In some instances (e.g. many UK newspapers), the publisher is the company or organization that owns the publication. In all American newspapers, the publisher is an individual person, whose name will be found on the masthead. There is never any need to cite this person in a reference. This parameter should normally be left blank.
Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:39, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

How to do ... an editing question

Hi... I have a question. In re: the Jennifer O'Neill article (again), in her filmography the entry for 1977 and the movie Sette note in nero , do you think it should read: Sette note in nero (original title) The Psychic. That way the title in English is apparent. And by the way, there is a wiki link to the sette note in nero. And if you think it would be appropriate, how do you do the editing of the boxes and lines ??? got no idea...

Also there is a misclassification I caught. In her filmography for the year 1997 there are

3 movies, the first is The Corporate Ladder . You can double check this as shown below, but the Internet Movie Data Base, Imdb, shows this was a TV movie (cable television movie),

not a threatrical release; so really, it should go down into the next section for "Television"
along with all the other TV movies and should read:

1997 The Corporate Ladder Irene Grace Playboy TV-Movie .

And by the way Playboy TV is also listed in wiki, but again I have no idea how you link it and edit the lines and boxes. Please advise how to, or maybe you can do, etc. thanks....

See Imdb at: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115946/plotsummary Taninao0126 (talk) 20:14, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Taninao! I have made the edits that you requested. In the future, you could make these requests at Talk:Jennifer O'Neill (which is on my watchlist) so that others can also provide assistance. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 21:38, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Ocotea genus in Lauraceae

Hello, how are you? I have edited in Ocotea I saw that you like biodiversity articles. Can you help me to edit again Ocotea? Palecloudedwhite wipe out the article over and over again. In any case I thank you it very much. Curritocurrito (talk) 11:13, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Curritocurrito! If I've edited in biodiversity articles, it's only been to fix formatting - not to change content. This isn't my area of expertise, but I'd be happy to provide suggestions if you could please provide more specific questions. Also, see the comment I made on your talk page. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 21:53, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
Hello GoingBatty. Thanks for your help at the Ocotea page, and for setting up a sandbox for Curritocurrito. I notice you've also been attending to a couple of other articles which Curritocurrito has been editing recently. Curritocurrito has also been editing as the IP 83.44.49.151 (talk), should you wish to take your fixing talents further. Thanks again. PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 22:18, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Knowledge of Dipterocarpaceae

Hello, How are you? I need your help. I ask you if you could enlarge Dipterocarpaceae making better known this group of trees in Wikipedia, adding links to "Dipterocarpaceae" and information about "Dipterocarpaceae" existence on topics as trees articles in tropical articles or botanical or biodiversity articles. Do you know people that could be interested about Dipterocarpaceae article? They are welcome too. Thank you very much.Curritocurrito (talk) 11:38, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi again! I made some minor formatting changes to Dipterocarpaceae and used Find link to add a link from Diptoindonesin A to Dipterocarpaceae. To find people who could help further, I suggest you try posting on Talk:Dipterocarpaceae and/or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Plants. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 17:17, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Hello again, I thank you by your help in Dipterocarpaceae and you are welcome if you want edit Lauraceae or some genera or species in these families or another one. Really, there are few knowledge about tropical and subtropical trees and they are so many. I thank you very much your help. Curritocurrito (talk) 19:02, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
I've made some minor formatting edits to some of these articles, but this really isn't my area of expertise. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:38, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Notice to Gimmetoo & GoingBatty: I just noticed the two of you have made conflicting edits on this article and I thought I'd flag it to your respective attentions before there's an edit war. The date formats in the references in the article was changed by GoingBatty to use long date format (e.g., "November 5, 2011") and Gimmetoo reverted it back to strict numeric ("2011-11-05"). I suggest the two of you hash out which way you want the dates to look outside of the article. Tabercil (talk) 14:44, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Tabercil! I appreciate the heads up (but not the presumption that I would engage in an edit war). I'll take it to Talk:Britney Spears. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 14:50, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
According to WP:DATERET, retain the existing format. The predominant format of the references was clearly yyyy-mm-dd, and of items using a different format, most were added very recently (within the last 24 hours, mostly). Gimmetoo (talk) 14:55, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
OK, but why have two date formats: one for the article text and one for the references? GoingBatty (talk) 14:59, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
Why not? References (notes) are typically abbreviated, and this is a form of abbreviation. It's an acceptable style choice, and that's how the article developed. Gimmetoo (talk) 15:02, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Democratic elections

There were NOT ever truely democratic elections in Liberia before 1997. First, for most of the country's history, there was only one party and one contestant in elections. Other times, the country was under military rule and the "elections" were shams where the ruling general was the only contestant.

Mr. George Andrews, though under direct threat from the president (documented in a local paper) did not buckle and kept the election free and fair. That was the first time that happened in Liberia. I think your edit was in error.

George — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.139.22.34 (talk) 16:26, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi George! Could you please let me know which edit you think is in error? If you are referring to the George Henry Andrews article, the only edit I made was to change "embarassed of" to "embarassed by". Thanks!

BadCiteParams database report

Too large to paste to a single wiki page, so I've uploaded it here as a 7-zip file, should be simple for you to take from there. en-wiki mainspace only. Hey, just wanted to say a big thanks for the help on the Boston page...lots of good stuff you did there. On a totally unrelated note, I noticed your Scouting boxes. fiction category

Regarding you post on the WP:RFCBOARD: I would like to suggest how to improve on the current architecture of wikipedia. Unfortunatly(fortunatly) all articles on wikipedia are in one bag. But this makes it very difficult to distinguish fiction from fact ... especially about films, cartoons, tv series, etc.

I propose to add the Category "fiction", so that it will be visible in the adress bar.
Example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek
-should be-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/fiction/Star_Trek

While the Star Trek TV show and related media are fictional stories, the Star Trek article is a factual history of the TV show and media. GoingBatty (talk) 21:40, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi there, I've been working on the multiple issues that have been pointed out on this page, I've cleaned the HISTORY tab a bit and tried to change the tone to a more neutral one and removing speculative comments. I've checked my external links and all are good, and I've gone through the citations and all refer back to reliable and verifiable sources. if you can think of anything else I can do to help this article, please let me know. Thanks. User:Dksdad1 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dksdad1 (talkcontribs) 13:40, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Dksdad1! I've made a bunch of improvements to The McLovins article. One thing you could do is to move the external links in the "Articles" section to references within the text of the article. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 00:38, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

genre citations

im sorry to be a bother but many users editing the album Three cheers for sweet revenge and the black parade are claiming that we can no longer cite allmusic for genres, since allmusic puts their genre list under styles. these users keep changing those albums to pop rock because the only genre allmusic lists for rock albums is just that.

I take issue with this because every other album on wikipedia uses allmusics styles as citations for genres and it makes no sense for them to say we cannot know, especially since claiming those two albums are pop/rock would mean they would have to change every other rock album to that since allmusic says that about every rock album.

If you could please explain to these users about how wikipedia cites allmusic i would be extremely grateful. if you could direct this message to a user who knows this subject better please do so because it is wrong of them to put such strictures on allmusic citations when such strictures have never existed before.

if you could please assist me Thank you very much — Preceding unsigned comment added by Musicstuff0324 (talkcontribs) 18:48, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Musicstuff0324! I believe the proper place to have the genre discussion is Talk:Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and Talk:The Black Parade. If that doesn't work, you may want to try Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums. Please note that not every album has the genre backed up with an Allmusic reference (e.g. Rubber Soul, Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, Don't Look Back (Boston album), Cosmo's Factory) Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 02:28, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

my problem is that i have tried to talking to them, but they refuse to listen. Allmusic does list the genres im using but they refuse to use it because it refers to them as styles instead of genre. Their being extremely specific, just because it says styles means i can't use it even though every other wikipedia page allows that very thing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Musicstuff0324 (talkcontribs) 21:37, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

Also i was wondering if you could try sorting this out. Your very respected and wikipedia and you understand the ins and outs of wiki rules than me or the editors on those pages. If you could read through those pages and see which side is right it would be extremely helpful. You understand how citations are supposed to work you can see whos right, and stop all of this if you see that their not understanding how to read allmusic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Musicstuff0324 (talkcontribs) 21:47, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

related to Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/BattyBot 10

I wanted to inform you just that there is also the possibility that ref names can inclode the |group= e.g. <ref group=foo>. I'm having the same problem with our WP:AFC helper script which checks now (after tomorrow) <ref> tags without ending </ref> tags and <ref> foo <ref>. Regards, mabdul 23:17, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

var testcomment = /\<\s*ref\s*(name\s*=\s*.*|group\s*=\s*.*)*\s*\>.*(\<\s*[^\/]ref\s*\>)*/mgi;

By the way, I believe that this regex should catch all valid variants in the ref tags. I still have to check taht on my sandboxes. Regards, mabdul 23:25, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Mabdul - thanks so much for the regex! A few months ago, I reported that AWB was changing Unreferenced tags to Refimprove for articles that only contain ref group tags, and the developers fixed that. I'll have to see if AWB has a similar problem with changing No footnotes to More footnotes. Thanks again! GoingBatty (talk) 00:30, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
Oh I missed to mentioned one things: that is a regex for JavaScript (of course since the script is in JS), so you might want/use something like that (forgive me, if I missed something to change. ^^ mabdul 06:55, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
/<\s*ref\s*(name\s*=\s*.*|group\s*=\s*.*)*\s*>.*(<\s*[^/]ref\s*>)*/mgi;
I just added the multiline option... ;) mabdul 07:45, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
I just wanted to give you a small update: my ref test is now working (although in a different way): I'm testing if there are <ref>foo<ref>bar</ref>. I have removed the multiline identifier again. I don't know what I was thinking these days...
var rerefdouble = /\<\s*ref\s*(name\s*=|group\s*=)*\s*[^\/]*\>?(\<\s*[^\/]*\s*ref\s*(name\s*=|group\s*=)*)/ig;

and additional I'm counting the closing and the opening ref tags and giving out an error:

var rerefbegin = /\<\s*ref\s*(name\s*=|group\s*=)*\s*[^\/]*>/ig;
var rerefend = /\<\/\s*ref\s*\>/ig;

website addresses

Please don't make changes such as www.depeche.fr to depeche.fr as web addresses - though often a redirect exists the two are different web addresses and can refer to different works.

eg see Template_talk:URL#Exclusion_of_prefix_is_technically_and_in_some_cases_practically_wrong, also cf http://www.jonathanmeades.com/ and http://jonathanmeades.com/ Oranjblud (talk) 11:43, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Presuming you're refering to this edit, I see that meretmarine.com, depeche.fr, and objectif-ofp.org refer to the same works as www.meretmarine.com, www.depeche.fr, and www.objectif-ofp.org. Note that the External links section contains two domain names without the "www" prefix.
Template talk:Cite web/Archive 6 has some discussion from editors who believe that using the domain name in the |work= parameter is not appropriate at all, but that's a different issue.
I hope you have pointed out the issue to Mr. Meades, so he can work with his web service provider to get the issue fixed. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 14:33, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

ibid

Err, would you explain this edit? Did you actually read the template {{ibid}}? The template doesn't contain op. cit. since over a year, moreover although (in my eyes) it shouldn't be used, it isn't forbidden! (in contrast to ibid.) Regards, mabdul 12:28, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Mabdul! Thank you for pointing out my mistake. While I was reading Template talk:Ibid and the various MOS pages, I see you already changed the format of the references on Marlboro Music School. (I would have used [[WP:SFN|short citations, but repeated full citations are fine too.) Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 14:05, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
Using the full citation is normally the fastest way to fix it/the ground problem. I'm trying to clear the ibid backlog more or less regular, but when I get to articles like Edwin Hurlbut, then I have to work for some days on it to fix the citations (in this case there were also references using the wrong publication date, etc.; work on progress on this article). If somebody really wants to improve an article (say to GA status), then he/she can fix the citation style using his/her preferred format or any other format. This isn't then my problem, but I try to fix the worst cases. (like the Hurlbut one, see what I have done in a few edits!) mabdul 14:41, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
You're doing a nice job - keep up the good work! GoingBatty (talk) 15:08, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

At some point, relax and take a look at how much the article has improved since you started working on it in earnest in mid-April 2012: diff. You should be very proud of what you accomplished, no matter what happens at the FAC. Hi, BattyBot has marked Trimdon Grange as requiring additional citation. Whilst it is a stub, that which is there seems to be sufficiently cited. The biggest single section is on the pit disaster, and most of that is drawn from the coroner's report. I've slightly clarified the citations, perhaps you would consider lifting the {{Refimprove}} tag? Regards, Martin of Sheffield (talk) 09:42, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Martin! In December 2009, Smackbot tagged the article as an unreferenced stub. BattyBot noticed that the article is no longer unreferenced, so it changed the tag to {{refimprove}}, since it takes a human to determine when an article is fully referenced. I was hoping that Albert Brallisford and George Bradshaw might have a web reference that could be copied over to Trimdon Grange, but they only referenced the Football League Players' Records book. Keep up the good work on the article, and feel free to be bold when you feel it's fully referenced. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:00, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

We are having a look to this bug report. http://toolserver.org/~awb/snapshots/AutoWikiBrowser5311_rev8097.zip is now online fixing some older bugs you reported. -- Magioladitis (talk) 20:18, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
I appreciate that you and Rj always start looking into my bug reports so quickly. Wish I could have been with you at Wikimania to learn more about the code so I could help fix issues too. Thanks for the new SVN - there's a bunch of fixes in there that I'm looking forward to using. Also eager to see how well it deals with the new {{multiple issues}} format. Thanks! Entitled

Old pal, the AWB typo rule "Titled" needs to be reined in, I think. Dictionary.cambridge.org (British English) has a definition for "entitled":

"to give a title to a book, movie, etc.:
Her latest novel, entitled "The Forgotten Child," is arriving in bookstores this week."

And oxforddictionaries.com has a similar definition. Chris the speller yack 04:05, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Chris - thanks for letting me know. I'll take your sources as being more reliable than the first few web sites I found, such as:
I've removed the typo rule. Thanks again. GoingBatty (talk) 04:14, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
For articles already changed, don't feel too bad. I imagine many have American connections, so WP:TIES could be considered applicable to them. You have helped me often in the past, so I'm glad to return the favor. Chris the speller yack 04:20, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
This web page seems to confirm what I suspected: it's an American-British difference, one that really seems to annoy a lot of Americans. In my edit above, I have changed WP:STRONGNAT to WP:TIES, a more direct link. Happy editing! Chris the speller yack 12:51, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

BattyBot changing templates that don't refer to the entire article

It appears that BattyBot tasks 4 and 10 are changing templates from has-none to has-some versions, even when the template appears somewhere other than the top of the article or the references section, or has been given a parameter referring to something other than the article. See, for example, [9], [10], [11]. A related example is [12]: I think the problem there is that {{No footnotes}} may have said "article or section" by default before and was inserted without a parameter originally, and nobody got around to changing it. Perhaps BattyBot should change things it finds in sections without parameters to {{No footnotes|section}} instead. Also, {{unreferenced}} in a section can be changed to {{unrefsect}} instead. (I can see why {{nofootnotes}} with no parameter in the References section would make sense to change though.) If this detection is a bug in AWB that can't be worked around, then maybe there is a way to stop doing 4 and 10 until AWB is fixed? I didn't put this on User talk:BattyBot because I didn't want to necessarily halt the bot unless there's no other way. --Closeapple (talk) 17:04, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Bot stopped - will investigate further tonight. Thanks for the heads up. GoingBatty (talk) 19:08, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
The default text in {{No footnotes}} was changed from "article or section" to "article" in December 2008 in this edit, while your example 4 shows a tag added December 2009 in these edits. GoingBatty (talk) 19:15, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Elmer Wexler: remove "more citations" template?

BattyBot changed template at Elmer Wexler from no citations to more citations.

I had added some references recently, and I removed the template today but undid my edit when I noticed it had recently been changed.

Do you think it still needs more inline citations? It's a very stubby article (which I didn't write), and it has a bunch of references now.

I couldn't find any guidelines for this, though I'm sure they're there somewhere.

Lyn50 (talk) 00:45, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

BattyBot changed {{No footnotes}} to {{More footnotes}}. Thanks to your good work on the article, every reference is an inline citation. Therefore, per Template:More footnotes, feel free to remove the template. Thanks, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 00:54, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! Now reverted to my earlier edit. Lyn50 (talk) 10:32, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

WPCleaner vs AutoWikiBrowser

I would like to know which features to WPCleaner you think should be done by AutoWikiBrowser. -- Magioladitis (talk) 03:42, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

AWB can only disambiguate one link on a page. I find that most pages that require disambiguation have more than one link that need fixing. The Dab Solver interface is the one I like best, and it's great for looking at all the pages in a WikiProject, but WPCleaner allows me to quickly load all pages that link to a certain word. GoingBatty (talk) 03:52, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
Also, I also find it nice to switch between tools to keep things fresh. GoingBatty (talk) 04:30, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

"First and only"

Would you object to undoing this? "First and only" and "only" are definitely not synonyms - at his death Claude Choules was the only surviving WW1 veteran, but certainly wasn't the first WW1 veteran; likewise, to say Parachute Reconnaissance Company 17 was "the only Swiss parachute company" completely loses the nuances of "first and only parachute company" as it then has to be explained separately that it had no predecessors. Please, undo this; if the MOS says otherwise, then it's the MOS at fault, not Wikipedia's articles. Mogism (talk) 18:13, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Rule reverted - please come discuss at Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Tasks#First and only. GoingBatty (talk) 21:42, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

When the link is blue, it appears it's correct unless you actaully test it. I tagged the link with {{dn}} because sometimes the appropriate link is not on the disambig page. Thanks for cleaning this up! GoingBatty (talk) 17:10, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
That's what I mean. People need to test their links more often. I almost always make sure to do so, but it seems almost no one else does anymore. I'm finding {{dn}}s all over the place. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 17:59, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Hey!

Hey GoingBatty! I had a quick question about AWB and was wondering if you had time to stop by #autowikibrowser on freenode? No one else seems to be around. Thanks! MJ94 (talk) 00:04, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Bot added unwanted colon

Hi, with this edit (which was admittedly over a week ago), BattyBot inserted an unwanted colon, changing {{FULLPAGENAME}} into {{FULLPAGENAME:}} and breaking the {{Commons category}} in the process. Don't know if you've fixed the bot code or not, nor if there were other instances; but I though that you should be aware. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:36, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know, RedRose64! I'm guessing this is an AWB bug, but I want to do some testing next week to confirm before reporting. I won't be running my bot until I investigate. Thanks again! GoingBatty (talk) 22:27, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
I processed the article again using the new version of AWB, and it does not add the unwanted colon. The bot account just uses AWB's general fixes to remove the bot tag. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 23:00, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

BattyBot: Task 9 false positives

BattyBot seems to have encountered a large number of Task 9 false positives on April 2, 2012. It erroneously identified numerous userbox and user categories as article categories and converted the categories to links. See [13][14][15][16][17][18]. I have fixed these six instances, but there appear to be more: [19][20][21][22].

If the bot code has been corrected, could you have BattyBot re-do its April 2 run and revert itself where it made a mistake? Thanks, -- Black Falcon (talk) 18:38, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi Black Falcon! I haven't found a way to ensure the bot can accurately do the task unsupervised, so I look at each edit before saving, which means I haven't run it very much since the conversation at User talk:BattyBot#Bot changing things_on user's sandbox. Wouldn't a mass revert require new logic and a new BRFA? GoingBatty (talk) 03:41, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
By the way, I manually reverted the four examples you provided above. GoingBatty (talk) 03:45, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

All Things Must Pass

Hi GoingBatty. I remember you taking part in a recent Harrison discussion, so If you felt like adding to one I've started, regarding changes to the All Things Must Pass album article, it would be much appreciated. Cheers, JG66 (talk) 11:26, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Newbie Question

Hey there Batty.

A noob question. After adding the references to a page[[23]], will BattyBot be returning to take its unreferenced tag off? Thanks.--Misha Atreides (talk) 15:32, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi Misha! BattyBot only changes {{unreferenced}} to {{refimprove}}, as it did on this edit to Joy: A Holiday Collection. However, I don't think a bot can tell when an article is fully referenced, so a human will have to remove {{refimprove}} when appropriate. Thanks for asking! GoingBatty (talk) 20:03, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification, Batty! --Misha Atreides (talk) 02:40, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

Some baklava for you!

Could you tell me how to create my page with a step by step direction? Kelenna (talk) 23:11, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
Hi Kelenna! If you're interested in creating your own user page (i.e. User:Kelenna), I suggest copying formats you like from other editors. (Just make sure you don't copy any awards or other info that doesn't relate to you.) You can then look at the code that creates each item to decide what you want to keep and what you don't.
If you're interested in creating an article, I suggest you look at Wikipedia:Your first article. And again, you can copy the code from a related page and populate it with the appropriate info. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 23:23, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

AWB & multiple issues

Hi, I don't have a problem with you making sure AWB uses {{multiple issues}} correctly, we all want it to be accurate. However, I'm pretty sick of the amount of changes I've had to make to support this one template. So, I plan to change the logic to use the new-style template per your feature request, and remove the old-style logic. Your most recent bug reports prove to me that the old-style template was too complicated to have in 'general' fixes. What I want to achieve is a simple implementation that has standard ignore comments logic and needs to know about a list of maintenance templates, section templates/section parameters, a threshold for insertion of multiple issues and hopefully nothing else. I don't want to keep/develop logic that template x is added/handled differently, or template y cannot be added because of parameter z, or template a and b are the same though names are different etc. So, I'd like you to help me with this by agreeing the logic up front (if the new-style multiple issues continues to need per-template exceptions I would drop any use of multiple issues in AWB, the exceptions are too much of a drain on my time), and you creating the entries in template redirects as needed. I will post on the feature request shortly. Thanks Rjwilmsi 12:10, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi Rjwilmsi! I'm very pleased with all the bug fixes you've done, especially the recent 100+ fixes! You've got a very hard job trying to keep AWB up to date as other editors change the definition of {{multiple issues}} (and {{dead end}}, and {{wikify}}, and so on). I'd be more than willing to work with you on this project, and hope I can learn more about the AWB code in the process, so I can do more than just report bugs. WP:AWB/TR and WP:AWB/RTP are great ways for us to improve the usability of AWB without modifying the code. How do you feel about having similar functionality for Multiple issues so we can maintain a list of those templates that are appropriate to be merged into Multiple issues? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 12:34, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
Some further questions for you on the FR page. Thanks Rjwilmsi 19:11, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Great idea - will test this weekend. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 02:06, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Request for changing functionality when marking a link as needing help

Hi, quite some time ago, you made a request on fr:Discussion utilisateur:NicoV/Wikipedia Cleaner. I've finally made some modifications for this. IS it ok ? I think it requires some testing, I only tested it with 1269. --NicoV (talk) 11:16, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know, NicoV. It will be a few days before I get back to my PC. I look forward to testing it soon. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 01:04, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
Just had a chance to test version 1.15, and it's much better. Two suggestions:
1. Since {{dn}} and {{ambiguous link}} redirect to {{disambiguation needed}}, I don't see why it is valuable to present three options. It would be one less click if it always used {{disambiguation needed}}.
2. Instead of adding {{disambiguation needed}}, could it add {{disambiguation needed|date={{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}}} instead?
Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 02:50, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
I changed the parameter name, you need to configure 2 parameters for this to work correctly: dab_ask_help_templates_after for every template that you can use in WPCleaner after a disambiguation link to request for help, and dab_help_asked_templates_after for every template that can be used to request for help (to detect them). I've made a basic configuration for enwiki, but you should probably add a few templates. --NicoV (talk) 22:12, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for making these changes. I would test them out, but I'm getting an Application Error stating "Unable to launch the application." GoingBatty (talk) 22:19, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

Caritas Ticino

Hi, I don't think it is still a orphan page because I link it to Eugenio Corecco article and viceversa. It's actually the best I can do. Thanks for suggesting. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fracati2 (talkcontribs) 13:27, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

About additional citations for verification and notability guidelines for companies and organizations. Please believe me that I met this beautiful organization early 2 years ago and now I'm in contact only via email so I do my best I'm journalist and I can prove that it respect all the criteria and its eligible for wikipedia (for instance it works all over the world in humanitarian and social sector and it make informations and communications by radio tv and newspaper to export a great message to catch out poor from poverty). How can I do to improve and satisfy yuor suggestions? Thank you very much for your work and time Fracati2 08:32, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
Hi Fracati2! It was User:Zujua who added the {{notability}} and {{unreferenced}} tags to Caritas Ticino in this edit. After references were added to the article, my bot changed {{unreferenced}} to {{refimprove}} in this edit. I hope you can use your journalism background to add references that show coverage in verifiable, reliable, independent secondary sources per the notability guideline for organizations.
My bot also added {{orphan}} and {{uncategorized}}. In addition to the link you added from Eugenio Corecco, I added a link from Francesco Faà di Bruno, so it's now de-orphaned. Some categories have been added, but it would be helpful it you could make sure they are correct and specific enough.
I've added a very simple lead section and hope you and others will expand it so there is an adequate introduction and summary to the article. I've replaced the {{sfn}} templates with <ref></ref> tags to remove the links that don't do anything.
You can discuss potential improvements to the article at Talk:Caritas Ticino. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 17:33, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

AWB Bug idea

What would you think about a log bug action on AWB? That way you could press a button, and it would log the bug and provide the page where the bug appeared. On that note, AWB tried to bold the first example of the title of Buddhism and Christianity even though it appeared after a section heading in the article. Ryan Vesey 22:52, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Ryan you need to update your AWB version. [24]. -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:58, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
Interesting idea, Ryan. I'd prefer a menu option instead of a button that would take up valuable real estate on the screen. I can envision that if you were using the newest SVN, the action could create a new section on WP:AWB/B and automatically populate the site URL, operating system, .NET verstion, and AWB version. If you weren't, you'd be taken to http://toolserver.org/~awb/snapshots/ and encouraged to download the newest SVN and retry. When I report a bug, I don't save the edit, so the developers can reproduce the issue. However, others like to save the edit and then report the bug. Some thought would have to go into which method is preferable, or if the user should have the option. I look forward to seeing this as a feature request! GoingBatty (talk) 16:56, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

AWB Typo fixes

Greetings, I added a few more typo fixes for US location names and I was wondering if you might double check my work. I checked and they work as far as I can tell but you have a lot more experience. Also, I think Mississippi could be improved but I could quite get it to work looking for Singular s's, singluar p's and ians at the end. I could get a couple at a time but not all. Thanks. Kumioko (talk) 09:33, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Maybe someone could add the native designation for the states also. "Rhode Islander(s)" was done but not "New Hampshirite(s)", "Massachusettsan(s)" and "Mississippian(s)". Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 12:56, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks good idea. Kumioko (talk) 15:22, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
Thank you GB, I noticed you fixed my cruddy formatting. :-) Kumioko (talk) 17:37, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
You're welcome - I updated the rules for "Massachusetts" and "Mississippi". I didn't update "New Hampshire_" since I'm assuming the underscore means the intent is to exclude "new Hampshirite" because of cases where new & Hampshirite are both adjectives (same as "New Mexico" rule). GoingBatty (talk) 17:44, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
If you want to look at other US States the names are in the U.S. Government Printing Office Style Manual in section 5.23 Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 17:55, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for that - I fixed the "Massachusetts" rule so its fixes will be "Massachusettsan", not "Massachusettsian". GoingBatty (talk) 18:13, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
Sorry to bother you again. Hope you don't mind my fiddling. I did a few more updates, mostly regarding cities this time. I also split the US cities into its own section. I think they all should work but the code isn't pretty in some cases, particularly for Albuqeurque. I also added a , after Phoenix to limit instances to places. I was hopeing you wouldn't mind double checking my work just to make sure I didn't completely break anything. Kumioko (talk) 21:49, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
No need to apologize - you're never a bother! I'll take a look at your changes later tonight. Have you been using the AWB Regex tester to test your changes before saving them on WP:AWB/T? GoingBatty (talk) 21:58, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
Most of them but I do need to do a better job of that I admit. Also in some cases its not so much that it doesn't work as not being as efficient/encompassing as it could be. Kumioko (talk) 23:17, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I reverted some of your work, since Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos#Writing_typo_rules states "Avoid having a rule detect a correct spelling". However, there are many additional misspellings that your rules will now catch. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 04:26, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi GabeMc! I've been looking at this for a few minutes now, and can't figure out what's wrong with the AWB edit to combine duplicate references. Could you please give me some more information? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 03:27, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Maybe I am missing something, it looks to me like AWB named this bundled cite: <ref>{{harvnb|Blake|2008|p=246}}: (secondary source); {{harvnb|Mason|2005|pp=223–225}}: (primary source).</ref> so that the next occurance rendered only this: <ref name="Blake 2008 246"/>, cutting out {{harvnb|Mason|2005|pp=223–225}}. Thanks for your time GoingBatty! ~ GabeMc (talk|contribs) 19:21, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Even though the <ref> tag in the code has only the first reference, the references as presented to the reader looked fine. In the code, the <ref> tag could say <ref name="Blake 2008 246"/> or <ref name="Blake 2008 246, Mason 2005 223-225"/> or <ref name="foobar">, as long as the {{harvnb|Blake|2008|p=246}}: (secondary source); {{harvnb|Mason|2005|pp=223–225}}: (primary source). looks OK to the user. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 01:21, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Xtreme Ice Skating

Why is the article "Xtreme Ice Skating" being ripped of the category "ice skating"? It's an ice-skating sport... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dan Perceval (talkcontribs) 02:27, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi Dan! Looking at the edit history for Xtreme Ice Skating, it seems the chain of events is as follows:
Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 21:01, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
I thought about this some more, and decided to create Category:Ice skating for you. I changed the categorization of several articles, including Xtreme Ice Skating. Happy skating! GoingBatty (talk) 01:15, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

You need to updated a bit the {{primary sources}} documentation to say that in case of living people the other template should be used. -- Magioladitis (talk) 23:05, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Hmmm - Template:Primary sources/doc says to use {{tl|Primary sources|BLP=yes}}, while {{BLP primary sources}} says it's a wrapper for {{Primary sources}} with the |BLP=yes parameter. Doesn't seem that there's a difference in what's displayed to the reader anyway. As long as AWB isn't changing {{tl|Primary sources|BLP=yes}} to {{tl|BLP primary sources}} (or worse, changing it to {{tl|BLP primary sources|BLP=yes}}), I'm not sure it matters. Thoughts? GoingBatty (talk) 00:12, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
There was a trend to change other templates with parameters to their wrappers. Can you please ask to the template's talk page or be bold and see what happens. -- Magioladitis (talk) 07:39, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
Right now the two cases you described may happen. As soon as the documentation is set I can run and fix to either direction: Orphan BLP primary sources or replace primary sources|BLP=yes to BLP primary sources. -- Magioladitis (talk) 07:41, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
Posted at Template talk:Primary sources#Primary sources and BLP. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 15:58, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

WP:MMA

Hello,

i noticed you edited a Mixed Martial Arts page in August, but you haven't listed yourself as a Participant on the Wikiproject for Mixed Martial Arts pages. I've decided to try to drum up interest to get more people involved!

Kevlar (talk) 00:48, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Kevlar! The scope of my work takes me to many different places in Wikipedia. I don't know anything about Mixed martial arts, so I'm not editing those pages very often. Good luck with your drive, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 00:55, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

I dunno how you managed to spot this, but I'm thankfully you did. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 00:34, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

You're doing a great job cleaning up the typo rules - keep it up! GoingBatty (talk) 00:43, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

FAC comment

Hi. Would you like to comment at my FAC page? I've been advised before that soliciting comments speeds things up a bit with the backlogged nominations there, and I see that you are a pretty prolific, efficient editor. Dan56 (talk) 15:22, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

WPCleaner for fixing spelling and typography

Hi,

Would you be interested in testing WPCleaner for fixing spelling and typography on enwiki ? Or know someone else that could be interested ? It's based on regular expressions defined for AWB in Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos. I'm currently testing it on frwiki and it seems to be almost working.

If you're interested, you just need to create User:GoingBatty/WikiCleanerConfiguration with the following :

# Configuration for error 501: Spelling and typography
error_501_prio_enwiki=0 END
error_501_head_enwiki=Spelling and typography END
error_501_bot_enwiki=true END

# This parameter is used to configure WPCleaner for fixing spelling and typography.
general_suggestions_typo =
  Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos END

When you find problems, just tell me in fr:Discussion_Wikipédia:WPCleaner#Suggestions_d.27orthographe_d.27AWB by filling at least the first column with the page title, and the second column with the regexp rule giving trouble. And you can add some explanations in the 3rd column.

Thanks --NicoV (talk) 19:00, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

I'd like to give this a go. Is there a Windows 7 installation or a Mac installation? Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 19:44, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
Yes, it's a Java program so it can work on both of them. Explanations for installation are on Wikipedia:WPCleaner/Installation, with a detailled example for Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I haven't been able to get my hand on a Mac to document the installation on it. --NicoV (talk) 19:57, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
first one Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 20:21, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
Typo each others=> each other's not detected on Dr. Seuss, AWB picks it up and it's a recent new rule on Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos. A question, is there anyway to check lots of articles for typos? Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 20:33, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
WPCleaner is written in Java, so the regexp engine is not exactly the same as the one used by AWB, and I also have made different design choices ; so some AWB rules won't work (it's possible to also define rules in WPCleaner format).
For "each others", it may be the (?= ) at the end that is misinterpreted. Is it necessary ? Can it be replaced by \b (word boundary) ? I need to analyse the problem.
The (?= ) part is to have a trailing space character to find a termination point as \b won't meet an end quote in "each others'" Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 01:20, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
Is that better than using \s to end the rule? GoingBatty (talk) 01:29, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
\s seems better to me, but I didn't write the rule. \s can be a space, a tab or other white space characters such as line-break. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 01:51, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
I don't understand why (?= ) or \s is better than \b. I thought that \b should match with any word boundary : space, tab, any white space character, punctuations, ... (everything that \s matches with and more). --NicoV (talk) 10:06, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
In the case of each others' the rule wants to detect the trailing ' or \' character which is not considered a boundary of \b. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 11:49, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
Ok, I thought that \b would work because of the next character was a space, a punctuation, ... But, I'm not sure how a word boundary is defined. --NicoV (talk) 16:11, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
You can open a lot of articles in WPCleaner by using a list and then running the Full analysis for several pages in the list at a time (not only typos, every analysis : dab, Check Wiki, ...). But it's not working like AWB so it's probably not easy as to use for really repetitive tasks.
I can make evolutions if you tell me what you'd like to see in Wikipedia talk:WPCleaner. --NicoV (talk) 20:57, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your help; I like the idea of being able to change the page where typos are found, so I could make a personal page with typos I wish to check rather then use the standard list. One minor evolution request, the 'External viewer Alt+E' opens an insecure page, I'd prefer to open a secure page. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 21:16, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
You can use several pages if you want for defining rules. WPCleaner also has its own regular expressions engine, so you can also define rules in this format (some AWB rules are rejected because the constructs are different). Pages with WPCleaner regexp are defined using general_suggestions instead of general_suggestions_typo. An example page on frwiki : fr:Wikipédia:Liste de fautes d'orthographe courantes.
When using WPCleaner to disambiguate links, the user chooses the proper link from a list. Would there be value in having WPCleaner suggest a list of corrections for typos too? For example, if it finds "consideres", it could suggest "considered" or "considers" per this conversation. Thanks!
Not sure I understand because it's already working that way. If you use WPCleaner regexp instead of AWB, you can have several suggestions for one rule (for example, on frwiki if we find "emploit" the suggestion is "emploi" or "emploie"). But I think that if you define 2 AWB rules with the same regexp, WPCleaner should suggest the 2 replacements. --NicoV (talk) 16:07, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
Sorry - it was I who did not understand. Thanks for pointing me to your example - that's exactly the functionality I was thinking about. I look forward to playing around with that. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 16:34, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
You now have an option to use secure URL if you prefer for the external viewer. --NicoV (talk) 10:02, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
I think mainly AWB is the tool for the large scale of typo checking that I do, but I can see WPCleaner working on highly problematic articles. i.e. Louisiana Tigers where clear display of nested quotes are highly desirable to make sense of it. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 01:20, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
Will do - thanks for the opportunity! GoingBatty (talk) 22:43, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
Already fixed a few, and it works well. I use WPCleaner for disambiguation, but I'm happy to clean up other issues at the same time. GoingBatty (talk) 01:29, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

I added a discussion about WPCleaner and spelling in Wikipedia talk:WPCleaner so that more people can join in the tests if they are interested. --NicoV (talk) 11:23, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Great idea! It's working out very well for me, so thank you for adding this functionality to WPCleaner! GoingBatty (talk) 20:09, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

I'm confused, please explain this template

Thanks for your recent semi-automated help with the Folding@home article. I notice that you added {{Use mdy dates}} to it, and I'm a bit confused as to what that means. Is everything fine and that template is just for bots, or do you want me to convert all the dates to a particular format? The entire article is consistent, but if it's necessary for me to change them all to a better format, please explain and provide me with several examples to conform to and I'll see what I can do. Thanks. • Jesse V.(talk) 03:25, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jesse - sorry for the confusion. I saw that the predominant date format was month day year (mdy) and ran a script which fixed one date which didn't conform. The template is added for future editors (or bots) so they know how to add additional dates. Keep up the good work! GoingBatty (talk) 03:34, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
👍 Like Thanks so much for the explanation. • Jesse V.(talk) 03:41, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
Ah, I finally figured out that diff. You did a few helpful things, but the script seemed to remove just one space around the equal sign in the accessdate field. So "accessdate = April 5, 2012" becomes "accessdate =April 5, 2012" which is VERY difficult to catch in a diff, and plus it messes with people who have OCD (sorry, I meant "CDO", there, now the letters are alphabetical) about their wikisyntax... :) • Jesse V.(talk) 03:48, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
You're right, so I posted a question on the script owner's talk page. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 01:26, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
Issue fixed - thanks for bringing this issue to my attention. GoingBatty (talk) 02:36, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

The Beatles poll

Hello GoingBatty; this message is to inform you that there is currently a public poll to determine whether to capitalize the definite article ("the") when mentioning the band "THE BEATLES" mid-sentence. As you've previously participated either here, here, or here, your input would be appreciated. Thank you for your time. Jburlinson (talk) 20:56, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jburlinson! I appreciate the notification, but I don't have strong feelings either way. I look forward to a successful completion to the poll, so we can move on to other ways to improve the encyclopedia. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 01:30, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
Won't you help us find resolution to this time waster? ~ GabeMc (talk|contribs) 23:52, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
There are passionate people on both sides of this discussion, and I can understand arguments on both sides. The only thing I would contribute is that it seems to me that whatever consensus is made for John, Paul, George & Ringo's band should apply to EVERY band, and therefore the poll should be much wider, which means many more people spending a lot more time on this topic. Or, we get to have a poll for each band, which would be a nightmare. I'd really rather leave this decision to others, but thanks for asking. GoingBatty (talk) 01:45, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Seeking advice on proposed edits to Wolf Trap page

Hello!

I'd like to make constructive changes to the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts page. I'm new to Wikipedia and could use your feedback on what I wrote. Also if you wouldn't mind posting my edits it if you think their acceptable, I would be truly grateful. I've saved my edits in my sandbox, which you can access here User:KristenMK/sandbox.

The section that I've proposed changes to currently includes information without sources, so I have written changes that remove insignificant information and added new information with citations.

Thank you so much for your time and assistance!

Sincerely, Kristen --KristenMK (talk) 01:22, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Kristen - welcome to Wikipedia! Your proposal looks good to me. I suggest you keep the header as "Wolf Trap today" (lowercase "t" in "today"), and that you format the dates as month day year. So go ahead and be bold and make the changes yourself. You may want to add the page to your watchlist, so you can check to see if anyone disagrees with your changes. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:41, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Hello again! I'm actually just trying to get the practice of proposing changes instead of making the changes myself. I work for New Media Strategies, and I've been asked to only propose changes to practice for client projects. While this Wolf Trap page doesn't pose a conflict of interest, most of the changes I'll usually be proposing will have a COI so I won't be make the changes myself. I would be so grateful if you wouldn't mind making these changes, so my boss can see that I've successfully completed the exercise. Thank you so much! --KristenMK (talk) 16:36, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
Done, with some minor tweaking of date format and italics. Next time, I suggest you post your suggestions on the article's talk page (per WP:AVOIDCOI) so you can build consensus with those most knowledgable about the article. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 17:50, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

Improved edit summary?

Hi Batty. Have to say - love the DAB needed tag, but is there anyway to do the edits with a better edit summary? It seems like most of your edits do this, so not sure if there was something with this particular series or? Just thought it might be worth raising for a future run? StarM 00:33, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

I'm using Dab solver to make those edits, which automatically makes those edit summaries. If you have suggestions for better edit summaries, I would be happy to pass them along to User_talk:Dispenser/Dab solver. Note that I add the {{dn}} template when I don't know the appropriate link, and sometimes the appropriate link has not yet been added to the disambiguation page. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 02:01, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
I made some manual fixes to the Brothers of the Sun Tour article, but I'm not knowledgable enough to know all the correct links. Could you please check my edits to make sure they're correct? In addition, are the Jake Owen songs "That Smell" and "Louisiana Saturday Night" also covers? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 02:13, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
Ahh thanks for the explanation. Wasn't sure if it was a bot whose edit summary could be adjusted. Maybe help could be linked to the DAB solver tool so it makes it clear what kind of help is needed? I'm a somewhat experienced editor/admin, but I admit I had no idea what the dn tag was in the diff and had to look at the display. Just a thought - if I'm the only one with the issue please feel free to disregard. Off to look at the edits now. That article did need some clean up so I appreciate your help. I updated the article to state that "That Smell" is a Skynyrd cover. Wasn't sure if "LA Sat Night" is a cover or a different song with a similar name. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 03:00, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Walk forward

Hi! Recently I made some changes to the "Walk Forward" page. I am new to the Wikipedia, but on this particular page, I would delete almost everything below the first 2 paragraphs. It is a talkative, manual style text. On the other hand, I would probably add the picture from Bob Pardo's book (page 252), and maybe add some views on problems of methodology. Bad {{multiple issues}} edit

In this edit, BattyBot screwed up the {{multiple issues}} template, probably by incorrectly assuming that since at least one new-style parameter was present that the unnamed parameter 1 would be the last parameter when it inserted the {{refimprove}} and {{orphan}} templates. Anomie 13:34, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Hmmm - looks like it may be an issue with the way that {{Multiple issues}} is set up - thanks for letting me know! GoingBatty (talk) 00:10, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
Per the conversation I started on Template talk:Multiple issues, this appears to be my fault. Hope the tracking category gets created, so I can fix them all. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 03:30, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

BattyBot problem

I understand that this is more of an AWB issue, but are you able to modify a custom module so that BattyBot either stops adding {{Wikify}} or uses {{underlinked}} in cases like this editRyan Vesey 18:49, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

I've never made a custom module, but I think a simple find and replace rule to change "{{wikify|date={{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}}}" to "{{underlinked|date={{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}}}" could work too until the AWB developers update the general fixes. WPCleaner 1.19

Hi, I have completely refactored WPCleaner in version 1.19 for the spell-checking feature. It now works suggestion by suggestion, instead of going through the article trying each suggestion. Many changes are induced by this :

  • It seems a lot faster :)
  • It better deals with AWB regular expressions (I can work differently with AWB and WPC regexp),
  • If regular expressions take more than 1 second on an article, a trace is displayed in the Java console. That allowed me to fix 2 regular expressions on frwiki, that were taking between 95 and 99% of the time.

With this modifications, on a very big article in frwiki that was taking 800 seconds to analyze on my laptop, it now takes only 7 seconds.

I have tested 1.19 only on frwiki, seems ok, but it probably needs some testing on enwiki.

--NicoV (talk) 07:12, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know, NicoV! I've noticed that WPCleaner 1.18 was much slower than previous versions, which I assumed was the spell-checking. I've installed WPCleaner 1.19 and will try it out over the next few days. There have been several editors improving the rules at WP:AWB/T. If you find any rules taking an excessive amount of time, your help improving those would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 16:08, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
It seems that pages with spelling and typography issues (such as 2012 Florida State Seminoles football team and 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane) take much longer to load than those that don't have spelling and typography issues (such as List of albums scheduled for release in 2013). GoingBatty (talk) 01:30, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
The last article in those examples is small (15Kb) so perhaps it is because of the size, can you find an example large article that doesn't have spelling and typography issues but still loads reasonably quickly? Regards, Sun Creator(talk) —Preceding undated comment added 14:39, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
Looks like you were right and I was wrong. The Beatles took over 10 minutes to analyze with version 1.19, and WPCleaner didn't find any issues. NicoV - do you have an older version of WPCleaner (pre-typo checking) that you can use to compare load times, and try to figure out how to speed it up for a future version? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 00:49, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

On my tests on frwiki, I only encountered that kind of analyze times with some rules that were not very efficient, but after fixing the rules analyze took a reasonable time (for example, on fr:Liste de résolutions du Conseil de sécurité des Nations unies, analyze took about 800 seconds before, 20 seconds after fixing the rules, and then 7 seconds with the code changes in 1.19). When analyzing The Beatles, WPCleaner issues warnings for a few rules on the Java console, which account for most of the time spent analyzing :

So, more than 15mn due to the last 5 five rules. Can you try fixing them? I know for example that (?<!...) at the beginning of a rule is highly inefficient, because the lookbehind is then tested at every position in the text. It's a lot faster if you move this part after to really speed up the analysis, even if you have to write a bigger rule (cf. my changes on frwiki: 1 and 2). With efficient rules, 1.19 should be faster, but it can be slower if too many inefficient rules exist. --NicoV (talk) 05:17, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

I could also try a few things in WPCleaner when I encounter very slow rules, but fixing the rule should give a huge improvement :
  • Totally deactivate rules starting with a lookbehind, but that would mean not being able to detect those errors.
  • When a rule takes more than a few seconds, don't check the rest of the article with it
--NicoV (talk) 06:48, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
This looks interesting, can you explain how to see the Java Console? Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 08:33, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
Have updated those five rules. Time for me on The Beatles from 20 minutes to 40 seconds!. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 12:36, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
By the way, two of the five rules don't work in WPCleaner, but they didn't work before either. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 12:48, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

To display the Java console is dependent on the Operating System you're running. A few examples: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/javaconsole.xml for Windows, http://www.ehow.com/how_7255734_enable-java-console-mac.html for Mac. Good to see that updating the last five rules gave a huge performance boost. I will check this evening, but most of the remaining time is probably spent on the first rule (A to An). The problem with the non working is probably similar to the one you reported with "so called", I need to find some time to understand what's going on. --NicoV (talk) 14:12, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks to both of you! GoingBatty (talk) 16:17, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
I updated the other rule and the load time for The Beatles is now 29 seconds. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 23:26, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
Wow - that's an amazing improvement! I've noticed it in some of the other articles I'm working on tonight. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 23:49, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
A little surprised it didn't go below the 10 second mark, given the improvement in the first 5 rules. I am wondering how this compares to a previous version. If there is more typo rule changes that could make WPCleaner faster I would be keen to make them. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 13:57, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
The first rule was only taking 13 seconds in its previous form. I've just tested again The Beatles, spell checking takes about 13 seconds, and only 3 rules took more than 100ms (-tionally 125ms, -ceive 199ms, Gbit 212ms). I'm adding an option to choose what is the threshold to consider a rule as slow. --NicoV (talk) 20:06, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Justin - thanks for letting me know. Looks like the category structure has been reorganized - no objections from me. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 23:13, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

As suggested...

Hey mate, as suggested, I have set up the List of cover versions of The Beatles songs as a sortable list. I've also added a lead and the "lists" template (which I just created) to the top. --rm 'w avu 01:56, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Nice job! Somehow I accidentally removed this article from my watchlist, so thanks for the reminder! GoingBatty (talk) 02:03, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
No probs. I've been absent from WP for a long time, so such a drastic update is pretty big for me, all things considered. Thanks for moving around this other lines and updating it. On a related note, the "Dynamic lists" template inclusion is possibly erroneous, given that the article indicates that notability is a prerequisite for inclusion, wouldn't you agree? --rm 'w avu 03:51, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
I would bet there are lots of covers by notable artists that have not yet been added. Thanks again! GoingBatty (talk) 16:48, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

BattyBot and Template:Multiple issues

Hi, two problems with this edit: first, {{notability|music}} was already present; second, {{multiple issues}} doesn't respect more than one positional parameter. --Redrose64 (talk) 09:50, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Redrose64! The article didn't need to have two notability tags on it for the last two years - glad you removed one. Sorry for not noticing this when I edited the article a few months ago. After the bot runs, I review Category:Pages using multiple issues with incorrect parameters and fix any issues, but you beat me to it. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 16:02, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Pending rewrite of sources script

Good day, sir,

I have just embarked on the long-overdue rewrite of the sources script in my test space. I am also attempting to lay down my thoughts as to how it should work at User:Ohconfucius/script/Sources#General_principles. FYI, the working test module is named function Ohc_sourcename. Note that this is very much work in progress, and that the module will supplant some of the regex currently residing in function Ohc_news_sources(). Your thoughts and advice, particularly as to the organisation/flow of the various tasks, would be much appreciated.

Regards, -- Ohconfucius ping / poke 09:55, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Oh, and is there a way to consolidate the code, as the first two blocks merely perform different transformations on the same strings? -- Ohconfucius ping / poke 15:36, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Ohconfucius - thanks for your continued work on these scripts! I fixed some typos in the General principles section, but otherwise it looks good. I like where you cited the {{citation}} documentation. If there's any other template documentation or MOS documents you can cite, I suggest you do so to prevent negative feedback about your script.
I'm not a script expert, so I'm not sure why you have two blocks. I did see a typo in two instances of '$1Herald SUn$2'. Since the "source name should be congruent with WP article namespace of same", why are you changing "Time.com" to "TIME" (uppercase).
If you want me to help test it, please let me know. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 23:27, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I've fixed those glitches. As to the structure, I guess I'll go back to the feller who sold me the code. ;-) Cheers, -- Ohconfucius ping / poke 01:59, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi, you're now quite welcome to test out the new sources script. The basic structure is now in place. The old script is still there, but the new code (which incorporates some of the old cleanup code) is called by a sidebar button 'New source module'. So far, it acts only on those sources located inside citation templates (I haven't been able to design a module that converts other sources inside citations). Remember that its building blocks set out to firstly retrain the links to a traditional name per WP. Secondly, it would italicise or otherwise the source by switching "|work=" or "|publisher=". It does not yet cater for piped links. I've just been running it when I specific article I think it could work on, but I usually still need to supplement it with the old script for now. There isn't anything yet to test it against, as I haven't yet devised a test page, so it could be helpful if maybe you could set one up. Alternatively, you might know of some suitable 'live' pages you could copy over to a test-bed for that purpose. Cheers, -- Ohconfucius ping / poke 10:17, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. I installed the script on User:GoingBatty/vector.js and refreshed my cache, but don't see the "New source module" as a sidebar link. Any suggestions? GoingBatty (talk) 16:47, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
Weird. I've loaded your vector file, and 'New source module' is just below 'Fix news sources' and 'Rem publishers' in the sequence of sidebar links. And I just did this edit. -- Ohconfucius ping / poke 17:52, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
Sorry - don't see any of those. I see "Reflinks" and then "ALL dates to dmy". GoingBatty (talk) 17:56, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes, there appears to be a bug that only manifests itself with IE. I can still see the sidebar buttons, but the script stalls in mid-execution. I need to spend some time testing it on IE. In the meantime, any ideas on what are suitable 'live' articles for testing? -- Ohconfucius ping / poke 01:47, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
I suggest you start with articles that contain "publisher=Entertainment Weekly" or "publisher=Wall Street Journal". Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 02:02, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
I've started one at my sandbox. It would be great if you could help me build it up. -- Ohconfucius ping / poke 03:12, 20 October 2012 (UTC)
  • I've deactivated the second function, and it seems to be loading on IE, but it takes a long time to execute. Please can you let me know how is it for you? Thanks, -- Ohconfucius ping / poke 04:34, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
I reinstalled the test script in my vector.js file, refreshed the cache, and still don't see any of the links.  :-( GoingBatty (talk) 00:33, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
OK Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to do some other testing on it tomorrow, if I feel patient enough. I'll keep you posted. -- Ohconfucius ping / poke 15:13, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
Sorry - still can't see the links. GoingBatty (talk) 02:45, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Are any links from the script visible:-
  • Fix news sources
  • Rem publishers
-- Ohconfucius ping / poke 03:01, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Nope, none of the links are visible, even when I cleared out everything except your test script. GoingBatty (talk) 03:08, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. Back to the drawing board! -- Ohconfucius ping / poke 03:19, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
  • I've now ejected each of the 3 new key functions of the script into a subscript. In theory, the following sidebar buttons should load:
    1. Linkspam
    2. Fix news sources
    3. Rem publishers
    4. Align source name
    5. Reclassify as WORK
    6. Unlink source name
    7. New source module
FYI, I don't see the 'unlink' button (#6)– which probably indicates a fatal error in that part (sub-script3), but the composite button (New source module), which includes functions #4 and #5, works more or less as intended on the test page. Could you please let me know what you see and what each of the buttons do? Thanks, -- Ohconfucius ping / poke 13:14, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. My friend who helped me with the dates script suggested that it was likely to be a bug in IE8. A repeat of this problem with an established script probably strengthens that as a possibility. -- Ohconfucius ping / poke 02:19, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Bad bot edit

What happened in this edit? Anomie 10:42, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

I had a problem in my find & replace rule. When I discovered the problem, I stopped the bot, searched for BattyBot's recent contributions that contained "$1" and fixed them - see GoingBatty's contributions for Oct 29 from 17:43-18:05. However, your bot found the error in this article before I did. Thanks for letting me know that your bot partially fixed this - I found the remaining articles containing {{Notability|Music|date=October 2012}}=October 2012}} and fixed them. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 16:49, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
I just stopped by to report a similar (broken tag) edit here, but I'll trust that everyone is already aware of this minor concern, and that a fix has already been deployed. Regards to both of you  -- WikHead (talk) 18:38, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
Me again. I just spotted another one of these here. No major concern, but I'm guessing there may be more.  -- WikHead (talk) 18:57, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
I was NOT aware of those, so thank you for pointing them out to me. I will search for all articles with {{Notability|Music|date=October 2012}}= and fix them. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 23:59, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
You're most certainly welcome Batty. After posting my last message here, I happened to stumble upon two others... at AuSSchlag and Vineet Saini that I didn't bother reporting to you. I assume by now that you've got it all under wrap. Have yourself a great day Batty. Stay well!  -- WikHead (talk) 00:23, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
I think I got them all now - thank you again for letting me know that there was more for me to clean up. I'm very embarrased by this mistake, so I also appreciate how kind you were when way you pointed these issues out to me. Please let me know if you see any more - thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 00:35, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
I will most certainly do that Batty. I know that you and your bot both do some very fine work around here... and even if there's a minor slip (such as this), I know it's been done in good faith. Rest easy my friend, and just keep doing what you do .  -- WikHead (talk) 00:48, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

What did I do wrong with references 3 and 4?

User:Vaughanster/Libertad Green — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.40.131.236 (talk) 16:20, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

If you're asking why references 3 & 4 on User:Vaughanster/Libertad Green don't appear with the correct links, it's because you're missing the http:// in each reference. However, neither http://www.seventeen.com/ not http://www.gotmilk.com/ are appropriate independent reliable sources because they don't mention Libertad Green. You'll need to find multiple sources in order to substantiate her notability to be included in Wikipedia. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 22:14, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jamesmcmahon0 - welcome to Wikipedia! You're question is certainly a valid one. Back when I started working on Wikipedia almost 3 years ago, {{wikify}} meant "add more links to other articles". About 2 years ago, the definition of "wikify" changed to include lots of other things, such as "applying any form of wiki-markup, such as standard headings and layout, including the addition of infoboxes and other templates, or bolding/italicizing of text". So when someone manually added the {[tl|wikify}} template, it wasn't always easy to understand exactly what improvements they wanted done to the article. Therefore, I don't know of a way to program a bot to adequate tell if an article has been "wikified".
Having said that, my bot and I use a piece of software called AutoWikiBrowser. Although the definition of the definition of "wikify" changed, AWB continued to add and remove the {{wikify}} template based solely on the number of wikilinks.
Therefore, I am reviewing all of the instances where my bot and I used AWB to add {{wikify}}. For each of those articles, I am removing {{wikify}} and either adding more wikilinks or adding {{underlinked}}. So far I've updated over 500 pages but still have several hundred to go.
Thanks for asking, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:49, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
FYI, I've finished removing {{wikify}} from all articles where I added it using AWB. GoingBatty (talk) 17:25, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Category removal

It states in Category:American films that it is supposed to include all such films, even if they are in subcategories. Clarityfiend (talk) 02:56, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

I wasn't aware that it was a non-diffusing subcategory. Thanks for providing that clarity for me! :-) GoingBatty (talk) 03:01, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
I found all of my edits where I incorrectly removed the category and readded it (if someone else didn't do it already). Thanks again!

Thanks so much - hope you enjoy the holidays! GoingBatty (talk) 01:44, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello. I reverted your edit to this article because you deleted a source without a proper explanation. If the link is bad, please mark it with "dead link", but not without first checking to see if the link has changed. Thanks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:47, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

If you'll give my edit a closer look, you'll see that I didn't delete any references. One of the "general fixes" I mentioned in my edit summary is to condense duplicate named references. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 22:53, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
Ah, I misunderstood, thanks. I'll restore that part of the edit, since I see you've restored the other. Beyond My Ken (talk) 23:30, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

Wikify has been deprecated

Thanks, GoingBatty. I saw that it had been deprecated and the prompt to use more specific templates, but going through the aternatives, I could not see one that was specific to lack/ absence of notability. Thanks for helping and have a grear 2013 too. Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 08:50, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

CORRECTION!!!! Sorry, this has nothing to do with naotability - I was tinking of an article that I proposed for speedy deletion for lack of notability. Got the two incidents mixed up. Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 10:00, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your message, GoingBatty. I added the Wikify template despite deprecation as there are multiple issues and I did not think 5 templates were appropriate. But seeing as you insisted, I have done that. As you can see, Activity centre is very organised now with maintenance boxes now taking up more screen space than the content. But every issue the templates mention is present, so I guess it's better that way. JamesA >talk 13:57, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi JamesA! You could use the {{Multiple issues}} template to mimimize the amount of space those templates take up. Instead, I made the following changes:
  1. Moved {{No footnotes}} and {{Citation style}} to the References section
  2. Added sections and removed {{Sections}}
  3. Removed {{Lead rewrite}}, since addressing the {{Lead too long}} issue will require rewriting the lead.
Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 17:35, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Allmusic source

Hello GoingBatty, I've noticed on your edits AWB, you removed italics from Allmusic under work, but from my understanding, Allmusic is an online source and should not be italicized. This is what I've been told though. Erick (talk) 21:59, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi Erick! One of AWB's general fixes is to remove italics from the |work= parameter. To get around this and still have the reference displayed properly, I'm now changing |work=''[[Allmusic]]'' to |publisher=Allmusic and removing |publisher=Rovi Corporation. If you have any examples of edits I did that were incorrect, please let me know and I'll be happy to fix them. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 00:53, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
Oh okay. The recent one I saw was on Mañana, Mañana. Thanks for the heads up. Erick (talk) 02:17, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Happy 2013
