Notice

The article Mayajalam (disambiguation) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Disambiguation page not required (WP:ONEOTHER). Primary topic has a hatnote to the only other use.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 09:01, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

Here is a barnstar to show appreciation for the NPP reviews you did back in 2020. We realize this is late, but NPP fell behind in some coordination activities. We are just getting caught up. If you don't want to receive "old" barnstars, please just ignore this and reply (with a ping) to let us know not to send you any more. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 03:08, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 September newsletter

The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

At this stage, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For the remaining competitors, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and importantly, before the deadline on October 31st!

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. The judges are Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Hello, Elli. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or draft page you started, "2026 United States elections".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Mohammad Qasim

Thanks for closing Talk:Mohammad Qasim (Balochistan politician)#Requested move 13 September 2022. It looks like there was a bit of confusion over which Qasim is the one from Balochistan: the one you moved to Mohammad Qasim (Balochistan politician) is actually from Mardan District in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, not Balochistan. (The one from Balochistan is Muhammad Qasim (senator).) Perhaps you'd consider moving Mohammad Qasim (Balochistan politician) to either "Mardan politician" or "Khyber Pakhtunkhwa politician" instead? DisamAssist on 2022 UK government crisis

Hey Elli. I noticed that you've got a semi-automated run going fixing the disambiguation links after the creation of the 2022 United Kingdom government crisis DAB page. I was processing these slowly by hand after I noticed no-one else had started onto em. Out of curiosity, does your script keep a track of which wikilinks also had piped text? I noticed on David Mundell, and a couple of other pages, that because of the successive crises the piped text also needed updating to make it clearer which crisis was being referred to. Or is that something you'll verify manually at the end? Sideswipe9th (talk) 00:42, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

I was going through these with DisamAssist. In general this doesn't keep track of that, but I'm happy to manually verify which ones need to be updated if you'd like me to. Elli (talk | contribs) 00:45, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
Ah cool. If it's not too much trouble that'd be awesome. Even if you can't fix em all yourself and leave a list for me that'll help a lot :) Sideswipe9th (talk) 00:48, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 November newsletter

The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is

  • England Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
  • New York City Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
  • Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
  • Chicago PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
  • Toronto Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.

During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.

  • England Lee Vilenski wins the featured article prize, for a total of 6 FAs during the course of the competition and 3 in the final round.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh wins the featured list prize, for 3 FLs in round 2.
  • Adam Cuerden wins the featured picture prize, for 39 FPs during the competition.
  • Toronto Z1720 wins the featured article reviewer prize, for 35 FARs in round 4.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius wins the good article prize, for 32 GAs in round 1.
  • SounderBruce wins the featured topic prize, for 4 FT articles in round 1.
  • England Lee Vilenski wins the good topic prize, for 34 GT articles in round 5.
  • Sammi Brie wins the good article reviewer prize, for 71 GARs overall.
  • Sammi Brie wins the Did you know prize, for 30 DYKs in round 3 and 106 overall.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 wins the In the news prize, for 106 ITNs in round 5 and 289 overall.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January and possible changes to the rules and scoring are being discussed on the discussion page. You are invited to sign up to take part in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to have a good turnout for the 2023 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners and finalists, and thank all participants for their involvement! County Borders in Election Maps

Hi Elli, I just wanted to ask you about the broader changes made to the standard maps used on wikipedia. Namely the decrease in the size of county borders as compared to the previous versions. Older maps are being updated with the new style guide as well. I don't have a problem with any of this, I was just curious if there was a concensus reached on these changes or if it's just indiviudal users aligning their edits. Gordfather69 (talk) 04:36, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

@Gordfather69: There have been a couple discussions had about this, but I don't recall one being conducted in a centralized location on-wiki. There isn't really a clear place to seek consensus, nor a clear need to do so (there was a inconsistent mess of maps used previously, and no one had really established consensus for any of them). I intended to have a centralized discussion before mass-replacing many of the old maps, but some editors are a bit more enthusiastic about this than I am. Hello Elli, Thank you being a mentor here on Wikipedia! I am actually really behind in editing my article and I literally cannot retain knowledge on how to edit things on here very well (I have dyslexia) My main question was to ask how to put in a category for an existing article, it pertains to adding a section about architectural style of a particular city. I tried to add a portion within the article but It isn't showing me where I made the edit, I wanted to include different styles of homes and interesting facts from style aesthetics from a few historic documents I was able to find from the 1800s. If you can help that would be most appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ro Dereemer (talkcontribs) 08:12, 10 December 2022 (UTC)

Given what else you've said it seems like you should be focusing on editing the page's prose vs details like the categories, at least for now. Do you have an issue figuring out how to do that? Question from Cerulean Depths (17:11, 7 December 2022)

Hi Elli, thanks for participating in the mentor program. I have been making minor edits to random articles as an IP for a couple of months from the community portal, etc. Eventually I would like to greatly expand a couple of articles that I found very interesting and may need some additional guidance at that point. But for now, I just wanted to say hi! --Cerulean Depths (talk) 17:11, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

@Cerulean Depths: Hi! Glad you've been contributing; feel free to ask me if you have any questions. Elli (talk | contribs) 19:24, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi there, are you able to help with this? I was too shy to ask for the article to be deleted in the first place but now it seems like a better choice than merging. Thanks! Cerulean Depths (talk) 16:20, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
@Cerulean Depths: Sure. The easiest solution here would be to blank and redirect the page to MAN SE, which is basically merging but without copying any of the contents. If that gets disputed, you could nominate it for deletion at articles for deletion -- let me know if you need help with doing either of these. Elli (talk | contribs) 18:10, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
Done, I think that worked okay. Cerulean Depths (talk) 19:10, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
@Cerulean Depths: yep, looks good! Elli (talk | contribs) 20:05, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

Please review my page when you get a chance?

Hi Elli, I hope you're having a good day. You have reviewed three of my pages in the past, Midnight Blue (Love Streaming), Waterfall and Cosmos. I was wondering if you could please review my new page Love or Loved when you get a chance? Thank you so much. —Bostonite01310 talk | contribs 02:30, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

@Bostonite01310: looks like it's already been reviewed. Just curious, have you considered nominating these for did you know? It's a good way to get more eyes on your page and to get some recognition for your effort. Since your article was moved to mainspace within the past seven days, it still qualifies, and it's more than long enough. Elli (talk | contribs) 18:12, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
Oh thank you for informing me! How do I nominate the page? Thanks —Bostonite01310 talk | contribs 01:05, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
@Bostonite01310: the info at WP:DYKNOM should explain it; let me know if you have any questions. Elli (talk | contribs) 01:21, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! Do I need to review an existing nomination to be eligible to nominate my own article? —Bostonite01310 talk | contribs 01:52, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
@Bostonite01310: not yet, since you haven't nominated any articles yet. You only need to do that after you've made a few nominations. Elli (talk | contribs) 02:05, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
Ah I see. Thanks! I have submitted my nomination now. —Bostonite01310 talk | contribs 02:08, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
@Bostonite01310: awesome! Elli (talk | contribs) 02:34, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

Question from Cerulean Depths (16:29, 15 December 2022)

Hi Elli, I have a question about a way to contribute. Is it okay to go to other language wikis, use an online translator (I don't speak anything but English) and then create new Enwiki pages with clear grammar? I think there are rules about attribution when copying from other articles. Does that apply to copying across wikis? Is it discouraged? Let me know if I should ask at Teahouse/Help Desk instead. Thanks! --Cerulean Depths (talk) 16:29, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

@Cerulean Depths: yes, you need to attribute the article. I would suggest you not do this, if you cannot verify the sources yourself. There isn't necessarily a policy against this but there have been cases where low-quality translations cause a significant amount of disruption. Elli (talk | contribs) 19:38, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, that makes sense! That was something I was worried about - that I could access and read the sources but not be able to properly assess them due to lack of understanding of the background and culture associated with them. Cerulean Depths (talk) 19:41, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
@Cerulean Depths: Yeah! It's best to start somewhat cautious and stick to topics you're comfortable with and branch out later as you get more editing experience, imo. Editing out-of-your-depth can be quite frustrating. I don't work much on medical articles for this reason for example (we also have stricter guidelines surrounding them). Welcome to the 2023 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2023 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 14:16, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

Question from Finnboi11 (18:51, 1 January 2023)

Help with moving a draft to the main space

Hi Elli, I have reviewed this draft page Draft:Flashback (iKon EP) and want move it to an article, but a title with the same name already exists Flashback (iKon EP), which only has redirect information to another page. I was wondering how do I proceed here. Thanks and looking forward to your inputs —Bostonite01310 talk | contribs 03:17, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

UPDATE: I have now found a way to move it. The article is now published Flashback (iKon EP). Please review it when you get a chance. Thank you so much. —Bostonite01310 talk | contribs 16:50, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

@Bostonite01310: sorry I didn't get back to you earlier! Looks good to me but I don't know much about the reliability of some of the sources you cited, so I'll leave it up to someone else to review. Elli (talk | contribs) 17:54, 3 January 2023 (UTC)
Sounds good, thank you. —Bostonite01310 talk | contribs 18:01, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

Question from Cerulean Depths (19:39, 3 January 2023)

Hi Elli, there is an editor whose work isn't necessarily disruptive, but they tend to put nonsequitor alt-right troll catch phrases in their edit summaries (antisemitism, etc). How should this be approached? Thanks! --Cerulean Depths (talk) 19:39, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

@Cerulean Depths: I would warn them about it first and if they continue report them to WP:ANI as that sort of thing is disruptive. Elli (talk | contribs) 19:49, 3 January 2023 (UTC)
I warned them using a template. Thanks! Cerulean Depths (talk) 19:54, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

I've created a subtemplate for applying rcats except when they are present in the page, Template:Automatic redirect categories/applyRcat. Can you see any problems that this might cause?

Also, how do you think this template should handle printworthiness, by default and when a printworthy template is applied? — Qwerfjkltalk 05:23, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

@Qwerfjkl: I don't see any immediate concerns but I'd recommend testing it on a few pages before using it widely. Also, not sure. Elli (talk | contribs) 21:24, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
I've tested it with User:Qwerfjkl/sandbox/applyRcat/testcase and User:Qwerfjkl/sandbox/applyRcat/testcase2, might it should probably be tested more, as you say. — Qwerfjkltalk 03:26, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
@Qwerfjkl yeah. I last seriously worked on this over a year ago so I don't remember the details of how everything worked (and have been focusing on other areas now). Elli (talk | contribs) 04:55, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

Succession boxes

Wikipedia:WikiProject Succession Box Standardization/Guidelines lists the appropriate successions. These are all definitive successions, i.e. a specific title, honour, award ect. It does not include subjective lists such oldest people which are open to interpretation. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 02:54, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

@DerbyCountyinNZ: I don't see how this is "open to interpretation"; there is only one oldest living person at any time. The succession box is clearly a useful navigational tool vs having to search around in the article's prose for the previous oldest living person and the next oldest living person. However, this isn't something I care deeply about so I'm not going to continue pushing for this. Elli (talk | contribs) 02:57, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
It's open because no-one can be absolutely sure who the oldest person is. Shigechyo Izumi was thought to be the oldest ever for over 20 years until that was found to be incorrect. These are also claimants to being the oldest person who have not (yet) been verified who might be verified later. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 03:02, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
Sure, but our articles are confident enough to say that these people were the oldest living people and who came before and after them, so adding a navigation box is justified based on the article content. Elli (talk | contribs) 03:03, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

That article could do with some improvement, including some basic and properly verified facts (about the history, the founding, the role of people like Patrick Moore)--but really all I find is critical information (in reliable sources!), "balanced" only by PR pieces from the lobby... Drmies (talk) 15:53, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

@Drmies: for sure. Been meaning to rewrite/expand that article for a while but been procrastinating on it (it feels like the kinda article where I could spend a lot of time researching and not particularly fun to do so). Elli (talk | contribs) 16:10, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, I can see that. All that fighting, all the propaganda (that's well-documented, of course, so I'm not making any POV statements here) for a club that's actually barely notable. I wonder if they'd be noteworthy at all if it weren't for the Facebook stink, and if that is actually enough to make them notable. Drmies (talk) 16:12, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
The way I found out about them myself was from a particular billboard from the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Certainly seems like they do a bit of advertisement in the real world, though not so much to have a whole ton written about them. Kinda annoying place for an organization to be. WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth.
