Thank you

Thank you for reviewing the translation of the Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement Guidelines. Your work helps to ensure a high quality text will be available to the community.

A token of appreciation from the Universal Code of Conduct project team. AJones (WMF) (talk) 16:28, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much, @AJones (WMF)! Chlod (top • contribs) 16:29, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chlod! If you're still inclined, I would definitely encourage you to push for converting Template:WikiProject Military history to use {{WPBannerMeta}}. Non-standard banners are a form of technical debt that we should try to wipe out, as I'm sure you won't be the last to encounter trouble from the current implementation. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 21:31, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Adding this to the list of things to do in the next month or so if I'm not busy. Chlod (top • contribs) 00:39, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Very very close to finishing at Template:WikiProject Military history/sandbox. Perhaps I can get it done soon. Chlod (top • contribs) 22:42, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A question about Ultraviolet

Hi Chlod, I have a question about Ultraviolet. On the page Wikipedia:Ultraviolet/Install, there is a line: "we cannot support Safari and all browsers on iPadOS and iOS due to Apple's policies at this time". What "Apple's policies" prevents Ultraviolet from running on that devices/environments? Thanks. Plantaest (talk) 12:07, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Plantaest: It seems this quote was a bit of an oversight on our end. RedWarn did not support Safari at the time of writing the old install page (late 2020). This was the case as Safari did not support <dialog> tags until this year, and RedWarn was heavily reliant on dialog tags to run. This is no longer the case with Ultraviolet, which uses standard browser <div> elements in an effort to increase browser compatibility. I can't recall if Ultraviolet works on Safari, but we haven't received any reports for Safari-specific issues as of late. Nevertheless, I can say that the quote you gave is no longer the case; I'll remove it from the page now. Chlod (top • contribs) 12:48, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okie, I understood. It's just a technical problem. Plantaest (talk) 12:55, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
To answer the other part of your question, the policy in question is part 2.5.6 of the App Store Review Guidelines:

Apps that browse the web must use the appropriate WebKit framework and WebKit Javascript.

Since, as Chlod mentioned above, WebKit didn't support the <dialog> element until recently, all browsers on i(Pad)OS also lacked support for it and were therefore unsupported by RedWarn/Ultraviolet. Hope that helps! Remagoxer (talk) 17:31, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
One more question. Hi Chlod, what part of the Ultraviolet project do you think is the most difficult to do in terms of programming? I have knowledge of programming (Java/TypeScript), so I think I'll understand your answer. Plantaest (talk) 13:15, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Plantaest: Nothing is particularly difficult as most tasks are relatively easy; they are instead time-consuming. Having to test re-implemented features (as some features are mostly for backwards-compatibility with RedWarn) is what takes the most time out of the development cycle, especially since we wouldn't want to disrupt on-wiki processes. Chlod (top • contribs) 14:20, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply, hope the project will continue to develop in the future and have more useful features. Plantaest (talk) 14:28, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question from TunaZalad (04:13, 14 November 2022)

When making an edit, is there a formal or official way to mark your edits? --TunaZalad (talk) 04:13, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, TunaZalad (nice username)! Anything specific you mean by "formal or official"? Usually I and a lot of other editors just place a short summary of what we did on a page using the edit summary. Perhaps I misunderstood; do tell me if you meant something else. Chlod (top • contribs) 04:58, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Weather: Map Dot & Template/Infobox Colors

Dear project member, This message is being sent out to encourage new ideas and feedback on those proposed in regard to the colors debate for WikiProject Weather. For those who are unaware of what's been happening over the last year, I will give a brief summary. We have been discussing proposed changes to the colors of the dots on tropical cyclone maps and templates and infoboxes across the entire weather project in order to solve issues related to the limited contrast between colors for both normal vision as well as the various types of color blindness (MOS:ACCESS). We had partially implemented a proposal earlier this year, however, it was objected to by a number of people and additional issues were presented that made it evident this wasn't the optimal solution. We tried to come up with other solutions to address the issues related to color contrast, however, none of them gained traction and no consensus was generated.

We need your help and I encourage you to propose your own scale and give feedback on those already listed. Keep in mind that we are NOT making a decision on any individual proposal at this time. We are simply allowing people to make proposals and cultivate them given feedback from other project members. Please visit our project page for additional details. The proposal phase will close no later than December 31st at 23:59 UTC. NoahTalk 02:43, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Hurricane Noah: I suggest bringing this to a subpage rather than doing it to the main talk page, much like Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Responder role or Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Deployment of Vector (2022), be it as a subpage of the WPWX talk page or WP:RFC. The talk page as it exists now is mindbogglingly hard to navigate. Chlod (top • contribs) 02:46, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm about to add some needed citations to an article, and I'm wondering what would be a good citation. Do you know how to find any? --TunaZalad (talk) 22:23, 15 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@TunaZalad: Hi, and sorry for the late response! The best citations are those that come from reliable sources — that is, sources that are credible and verifiable. You can read the linked page for more information, or Help:Referencing for beginners for a general guide. Chlod (top • contribs) 02:48, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Pattipeeples62 on Starkville, Mississippi (19:49, 27 December 2022)

Hello

I would like to add J. Dabney Peeples, Landscape Architect to famous people of Starkville, MS --Pattipeeples62 (talk) 19:49, 27 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, @Pattipeeples62, and apologies for the late reply. As a general rule, Wikipedia does not include living people on lists of famous people unless they have received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. This is to ensure that our content is based on reliable, verifiable sources.
If you are able to provide such sources for J. Dabney Peeples, we would be happy to consider adding them to the page. Please keep in mind that Wikipedia has strict policies on conflict of interest, which means that editors should not write about themselves or people with whom they have a close personal or professional relationship. If you have a close connection to J. Dabney Peeples, it would be best to disclose this and avoid editing their article directly, see this page for a more in-depth explanation.
Thank you for your understanding and for your interest in contributing to Wikipedia. Chlod (top • contribs) 13:22, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How can I make my Wikipedia page searchable on the internet and on Siri when I ask who am I ? --Kaliene (talk) 14:06, 5 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Kaliene! Only actual articles that have been reviewed by editors are made searchable on the internet. This excludes user pages, drafts, or pages which haven't been reviewed. Getting a draft article reviewed requires going through a review process, which you can check at Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Do note that articles generally require significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the topic. If the subject of your draft (in this case, yourself), is not notable, we will not publish an article for it. Chlod (top • contribs) 20:03, 5 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from AScanner (09:45, 18 January 2023)

Hi Chlod! There's some niche pages in areas of TV/music productions that I'd like to polish up and make nicer, and if I think I can get up to it, some articles I'd like to make. Where can I find a set of guidelines as to what makes a good article on media topics? As in, standards of formatting/information/what each section should be to make it a good article.

I figure this probably exists somewhere- a set of guidelines on writing content in a certain area- but I'm having some difficulty navigating Wikipedia's UI to find them. --AScanner (talk) 09:45, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AScanner (I just happened to be nearby): There are things called WikiProjects that act loosely as groups of editors with a shared interest in a narrow(er) topic. They will typically work together through discussion and support to establish consensus about the layout and content of articles considered within that their topic's wheelhouse. If you pop over to Wikipedia:WikiProject you'll find the first step toward narrowing your search (there's literally a search box at the top of that page), which might allow you to find WikiProject Television and WikiProject Music which may themselves be sub-divided into child projects for greater specificity.
Sadly, many WikiProjects can fall quiet but have usually established pages of guidance for articles within the project's scope, that remain consensus by the mechanism of being just that, so even if folk aren't particularly active in the project's talk pages, the guides can still be helpful.
Beyond WikiProjects, the default policies and guidelines of Wikipedia are vast and complex, but they're all derived from some fairly basic principles known as the five pillars. I have placed a welcome template on your talk page with a load of links to helpful pages about how to get started on Wikipedia. You will see links there to specific guides about creating and developing articles, which will apply no matter what the topic is. Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 14:03, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Biochen123 (14:46, 27 February 2023)

Dear mentor, I was asked to fill a statment about conflict of interests for Biochen123 user, and I need your help. I have a Phd in biology and I have been working for over 35 years in the Alexander Silberman Institude of Life Sciences in various research projects. During the past few months I have composed voluntarily five pages for the following Scientists: Liran Carmel, Eran Meshorer, Nissim Benvenisty, Sagiv Shifman and Guy Bloch. All these scientists are nteworthy full proffessors, whose work I am well acquainted with. Currently there are 73 active scientists in the institute, and I chose only a few. I did not receive any money for writing these pages, and did it only because these are leading scientists in their respective fields, as can be seen by the description of their research and by their lists of publications. Unfortunately, despite the very concise information that can be easily checked by the references I included (all on-line easily accessible sources), all these pages have been marked as written for money and as suspicious information. I have another page under construction about the Alexander Silberman Institude of Life Sciences. I have inserted varius improvements but have not yet resubmitted it. I would like to sort this problem first. All the abobve mentioned pages should be linked to this page about the institute.

Please advise me regrding the following subjects: 1. Where do I fill the statement about conflict of interests? 2. what should I write there? 3. What should I do (whom should I approach) in order to remove the warning remarks from each of these pages?

Sincerely --Biochen123 (talk) 14:46, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @Biochen123! Here's a few suggestions for the first two questions you have:
  1. Edit your user page and write your declaration of a conflict of interest. There's really no required way to write a declaration, as long as it is understandable by other editors. Maybe you can even add a short introduction to let others know your background. I'll provide an example of what you can write below:

    Hello! I am Chlod, a software developer and Wikipedia editor. I work at XYZ Laboratories, and may have a conflict of interest with the laboratory, its staff, or its facilities.

    After this, just save the page. Your declaration should be immediately visible for other editors to see. Feel free to expand the text above to suit your needs or preference. For articles which already exist, such as Guy Bloch, consider placing the following template on the page as well, using the code provided:
    Wikitextuserbox
    {{UserboxCOI|Guy Bloch}}{{UserboxCOI}}
    Keep that on its own line with a blank line above it, for best visibility.
  2. Place the following template at the top of the talk page for the articles you edit. Also keep it on its own line.
Wikitextuserbox
{{Connected contributor|User1=Biochen123 |editedhere= yes|U1-declared=yes |small=yes}}{{Connected contributor}}
A small version is shown above. The real thing would be much bigger. Place this on every draft you've made about related topics that you have a conflict of interest in and on articles you've edited that you have a conflict of interest in.
As for your last question, this is really up to how you write the article. As long as you follow the wiki's Manual of Style and your article follows all policies and guidelines, it has a chance of being published. I suggest contacting the users who have given reviews on your drafts through their talk pages, as they are the most capable of helping you in getting your draft improved and reviewed. Chlod (top • contribs) 15:38, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
thank you for your quick replay, i followed your instructions and added notifications in all the pages i have edited so far. Biochen123 (talk) 13:31, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Chlod,
I have edited 5 pages that have already been approved (are available to Wikipedia users). However, currently all these pages (listed below) contain editors remarks about possible wrong financing and questionable resources. I don't see who are the editors that added these comments, where can I see this information?
I have now added the links to my conflict of interests in all of these pages. What can I do in order to remove these very problematic remarks?
Thank you very much

@Biochen123: You can view the page history using the "View history" button at the top left of the page, just next to "Edit". This shows a detailed list of all the editors who have edited a page. It seems Onel5969 was the one that tagged all the articles you mentioned; you may leave them a message here to explain your situation.
I saw you tried to contact them through your talk page but did not leave a ping. In the future, use {{ping}} (which generates: @Chlod:) or {{u}} (which generates Chlod) and sign your post (automatically done by the Reply tool) to notify the user of a message. Using the reply tool, you can also type in @ and a list of users who you can ping will show up. Without pinging a user, they won't notice that you've left a message. You may make a reply to your earlier message on your talk page to ping them (n.b. editing a past message will not work). Chlod (top • contribs) 17:30, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Sophie514 (15:53, 14 March 2023)

Hello Chlod, I need to write a new article but I'm a brand new contributor, how can I do it?

Thanks, Sophie --Sophie514 (talk) 15:53, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @Sophie514! How to start with writing an article highly depends on what you want to write about. But in any case, Wikipedia does have a few guides which you can use that can help you get started with a new article. If you're looking for a more guided experience, the Article Wizard might work for you. If you're more into reading, our help page on writing your first article may help as well. In case you have additional questions, you're also free to reply to this message with the "reply" button. Chlod (top • contribs) 15:58, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Chlod,
Thank you for your quick reply (and thank you for the welcoming message on my page).
Here's the thing: I need to write an article about my client in French. One of my colleague tried to do it in English and even though he added some good references and reliable sources, his article has been rejected because the sources were not good enough. I would like to know what I can do to avoid that.
Thanks for your help
Sophie Sophie514 (talk) 16:10, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Sophie514: You mentioned that your colleague had an article (or I assume a draft) rejected due to sourcing concerns. Without seeing the sources themselves I can't make a clear assessment, but knowing the processes that go around reviewing an article, I'm sure the rejection wasn't done without due reason. Issues with sourcing can mean a lot of things; it could be a lack of secondary sources, the use of sources which are not independent of the subject, or the use of unverifiable sources. Besides researching for better sources that you may have not yet found, there is usually no other recourse than to either give up or wait for better sources to use.
It's important to note that the French Wikipedia has different guidelines on sourcing than the English Wikipedia and French articles should be on the French Wikipedia instead of the English one. Also, prior to making edits related to articles or drafts of your client, please review our policy on paid editing and disclosure. You also mentioned that you have a colleague; please do note that collusion in editing, especially for paid editing, is prohibited. Chlod (top • contribs) 16:30, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question From Jack345110

Hi @Chlod I saw on some talk pages there are some sort of stars I think they are called Barnstars or something like that I would like to know what they are and what they are for? Thanks Jack345110 (talk) 21:01, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jack345110: Barnstars are awards given to editors by other editors as a way to give appreciation. Comparing this with other websites, they work similarly with Reddit Awards (except no fancy subscription or "coins" are given). Barnstars are usually awarded as a token of gratitude for writing articles, doing maintenance work on-wiki, or just by being an outstanding editor in general. Question user scripts

Hi @Chlod i saw your name at Wikipedia:User scripts/Requests and thought you might know about this.

I'm trying to create a fork of User:Enterprisey/StatusChanger.js at User:1AmNobody24/StatusChanger.js in order to move the functions from p-personal to p-cactions and am failing horribly (it's my first time trying to create a script/fork). Is that even possible and do you know how? 1AmNobody24 (talk) 13:46, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@1AmNobody24: Hello, and sorry for the late response. I'm not really sure what you're trying to do, since your use of mw.addPortletLink seems to add to a link of MediaWiki rather than a link to some code in your script. If you'd like a reference, you can check out User:Chlod/Scripts/ReferenceDeselector.js for how to correctly use p-cactions, and you can check here for the MediaWiki documentation on addPortletLink, and much more things that you can do with the mw object. Chlod (top • contribs) 22:18, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Chlod Thanks for the help. What i'm trying to do is change my status using the more drop-down list instead of having them in p-personal at the top. The Mediawiki link was from testing with the addPortletLink documentation which you also linked, but i failed with that too. 1AmNobody24 (talk) 06:07, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@1AmNobody24: I believe just changing "p-personal" to "p-cactions" in Enterprisey's script is enough. Not sure what's going wrong there. Chlod (top • contribs) 06:49, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Chlod Tried that, doesn't show up. 1AmNobody24 (talk) 07:06, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@1AmNobody24: You have a syntax error on line 54 of your code. Instead of a comma, that should be closing parentheses. The code editor should have warned you about this; be sure to double check any errors that might have shown up while editing the JS page. Chlod (top • contribs) 13:54, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from M2Mkt (13:42, 29 April 2023)

Greetings. Quick question please: for the 'push technology' article, it happens that back in early 90's when I was a tech executive with GE, I first coined the term 'push technology' while working with the Pointcast Network, the firm that first deployed the capability as a then declared 'game changer' for the internet. (Prior to that, everything was essentially 'push'.) I gave permission to Pointcast Network leadership to adopt and use the term, which then became ubiquitous. My question: Would it be appropriate for me (or someone else?) to note this attribution in the wiki article? I would swear on an affidavit that it is factually true (as I'm sure a Pointcast executive would do if they could be reached). thank you for your consideration and assistance. --M2Mkt (talk) 13:42, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @M2Mkt! For content, we usually require everything to be verifiable through a reliable resource. If PointCast (or companies that succeed it, as this article tells me that the company is now defunct) or preferably a secondary source, say a tech news provider or book, has this information available, then we'd be happy to include it in the article. We can't accept content based on personal experience, however, as this would be considered original research and would therefore be much more difficult to verify. Hope this helps! Chlod (top • contribs) 13:49, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Very helpful, and the policy certainly makes sense. I'll see if any of the former Pointcast executives can be reached (30+ yrs. have passed)!
Many thanks. M2Mkt (talk) 13:53, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Chold,
One detail please: If I am able to reach a former Pointcast executive for verification of the above, is it appropriate/necessary to ask them to directly submit the edit to the subject article? Thank you again,
M2Mkt (Mark Mastrianni) M2Mkt (talk) 14:22, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@M2Mkt: It would still be original research in that case. That info must be available somewhere that isn't on Wikipedia beforehand, say a 'History' page on the website for that company or in an interview with a reputable source (such as a magazine or news agency). Module Issue

I am not sure what's causing the error at Module:Storm categories/categories/sandbox. Everytime I add aliases for anything with the ID 84xxx, it removes them from the table at Module:Storm categories/sandbox. Nothing else is affected. NoahTalk 13:26, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Hurricane Noah: In Special:Diff/1148370608, you are assigning cats["thunderstorm"] (a nil value) to cats["tstm"]. Aliases work the other way around; cats["thunderstorm"] = cats["tstm"]. Arguably, the key on the main table should be thunderstorm, not tstm. Chlod (top • contribs) 09:27, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oops... fixed that. Would the tornado outbreak box be able to support the Storm Prediction Center risk categories (Thunderstorm, marginal, slight, enhanced, moderate, and high) either as a scale or included in some way? I am going to add in the Red Flag Threat Index to the colors once I get time and then that just leaves the temperature colors. NoahTalk 15:05, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hurricane Noah: Could with a few changes. Not sure whether we need it on the infobox, though. The driving color for the header is the color for the highest tornado rating for the entire outbreak, since this measurement is based on actual post-event measurements. Unless this is an ongoing event (or a future event that doesn't violate WP:FUTURE, not the case most of the time, since tornado outbreaks are only notable after the fact), then I don't see a reason why this should be in /Tornado outbreak (and not /Current). Chlod (top • contribs) 02:36, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, even /Current isn't the right place for this. We don't add JTWC or JMA forecast categories in the infobox for WPAC storms. Chlod (top • contribs) 02:39, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
SPC risk categories are a bigger deal for tornadoes than forecast categories are elsewhere, especially if it was a high risk one since those are rare. They really should be included in some form. NoahTalk 11:46, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hurricane Noah: Again, it is still a forecast, and the current template shows the maximum rating actually achieved instead of forecast intensity. We ought to be explaining forecasts in prose and not in the infobox. Chlod (top • contribs) 13:43, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
During an active tornado outbreak like the one last weekend, the forecast risk would be more helpful than the highest intensity obtained up to that point. I still believe the maximum risk should be mentioned somewhere within the final infobox. NoahTalk 13:56, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Then it that case it would be better suited for Template:Infobox weather event/Current, like I said. Chlod (top • contribs) 13:57, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I still have temperature-related items to add, but is there anything else you think is missing from what's displayed at Module:Storm_categories/sandbox? NoahTalk 15:43, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hurricane Noah: I wouldn't know; I don't know what was added in the first place. Chlod (top • contribs) 22:09, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The remnant low parameter isn't displaying for the weather event infobox. NoahTalk 11:27, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hurricane Noah: Fixed. Chlod (top • contribs) 13:07, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

For the tornado boxes, would you be able to make it where if fujita=IF(whatever value), it would display the correct IF color (those colors have been initially defined as 1/3 steps between the default EF color values)? Also, could you make it where the torro scale color is used if fujita isn't used? I noticed if torro is the only one, the bar is grey and just says "tornado". NoahTalk 13:57, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Hurricane Noah:  Done Chlod (top • contribs) 16:37, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The only issue I see is that when I do |torro-scale = T10, it shows up as gray without a status, but if I do | fujita-scale = T10, it shows the color and status but links to fujita scale. Other than that, it seems fine. NoahTalk 16:45, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hurricane Noah:  Fixed Chlod (top • contribs) 16:49, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What will all need icons? I just uploaded a batch of icons today. NoahTalk 23:06, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hurricane Noah: I don't understand, could you rephrase? Chlod (top • contribs) 02:57, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Im just trying to figure out which items in the colors module will need icons and which will not. NoahTalk 02:59, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hurricane Noah: In reality, much of these don't need icons. We only ever use icons for {{Infobox tropical cyclone current}} (and the eventual /Current subbox) anyway. Chlod (top • contribs) 03:02, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @User:Chlod, it's been a while but I saw that some people have boxes on their User Page that says how long it has been since they have joined, what template do I use to get that? New Weather Infoboxes

I'm sure you've gotten A LOT of angry messages about the new weather infoboxes, so I'm not going to bombard you with angry comments. However, I just thought I'd bring up some things about it that might be worth improving:

(1) The new infoboxes shrink the image within them, which makes more detailed images harder to see, even though the infobox itself is bigger.

(2) All the events in the infobox are not listed (i.e., the Tornado outbreak of March 31 – April 1, 2023 infobox only says Tornado outbreak; it previously had Extratropical cyclone, Tornado outbreak, Winter storm, Blizzard)

(3) The coloration for the event is confusing (i.e., the "tornado outbreak" in the Tornado outbreak of March 31 – April 1, 2023 infobox is colored red only because the max tornado rating from the outbreak is EF4 and for no other reason)

(4) The infoboxes have information that could be disputed (i.e. the 2011 Joplin tornado infobox has a "houses destroyed" category; such information can vary from source to source)

I just thought I'd bring these up. Again, these are just suggestions. Thanks. ChessEric 00:27, 6 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry, I've only ever gotten a single angry message and it's from an editor who has a history and pattern of civility issues.
  1. The image size follows user preferences, and is particularly useful for those who request a larger image size on their preferences for accessibility reasons. |image-upright= makes the image larger. If the detail is lost due to the image size, it's the responsibility of the editor to indicate that the image should be larger.
  2. This seems to be faulty infobox conversion (cc @RandomInfinity17). The intention is that you'd use multiple subboxes for every type of storm. User:Chlod/sandbox2 @ 1153552445 has an example.
  3. This isn't entirely true; the maximum color is based on the Fujita or TORRO rating, in that order. The maximum rating is placed just two rows below (one, if a tornado count was not included) under the tornado count to contextualize the color.
  4. This wouldn't be any different from disputed damage counts (disaster agency vs. Aon counts). It's up to the editors to sort that out, and isn't an inherent fault of the infobox.
Much of these aren't faults of the infobox, but rather faults of how they're being used. The only thing I'd be able to recommend here is that people properly read the documentation to ensure that they're using the templates correctly. Chlod (top • contribs) 02:15, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@ChessEric: Forgot to ping. Chlod (top • contribs) 02:16, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah...I got you. For specifics:
(1) I didn't know it was a preference now. That's good to know.
(2) I had not realized that was done in error. Now I see the split with everything.
(3) Goes along with the previous note. All the events weren't listed, so I didn't know. It is interesting that there will coloration for this now.
(4) This seems like trouble. LOL! The AON dispute is something that is just aggravating for me and I hope that this category doesn't turn into that.
Thanks for explaining! If I have any other questions, I'll let you know. ChessEric 18:43, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm curious as to what's causing the infobox to slide down to an entirely different section at Tornado_outbreak_of_March_31_–_April_1,_2023#Little_Rock–North_Little_Rock–Jacksonville,_Arkansas. NoahTalk 01:39, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hurricane Noah: The lack of a footer. Chlod (top • contribs) 01:55, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting... I thought simply adding footer=yes would solve that issue but I guess not. Thanks. NoahTalk 01:57, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hurricane Noah: Only works for the header template. I might add this functionality to other templates later on. Chlod (top • contribs) 02:07, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you get time, would you be able to add parameters to the meta templates for heat index and highest temperature? NoahTalk 03:24, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hurricane Noah: Where will this be used? Chlod (top • contribs) 04:44, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It would be used within a new box for heatwave events. We already have lowest temperature which corresponds to coldwaves. We probably also need wind chill if it isn't included already. NoahTalk 11:08, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Hurricane Noah: The reason why some parameters exist within the /meteorology box is because that parameter is reused across different boxes. If this will be used exclusively for heatwave events, then making this an exclusive parameter of that box would be the way to go; not adding it into the /meteorology box. Chlod (top • contribs) 11:18, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You can actually leave the footer blank and it won't slide down. This will avoid having to repeatedly add seasons to the infoboxes. ChessEric 14:50, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a way to make the individual tornado boxes with mph and not knots? That's going to confuse people, especially since certain wind speeds like 130 mph don't have knot designations. ChessEric 14:53, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@ChessEric: I've been thinking of a solution but I haven't implemented it yet. For now, you can use the {{convert}} template within the |winds= parameter and it'll avoid performing any special calculations. Chlod (top • contribs) 22:29, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha! ChessEric 01:25, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, now that I think about it, wasn't the infobox that way before anyway? ChessEric 01:25, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@ChessEric: No, {{infobox storm}} (which was used for tornadoes) used mph. mph isn't used in a large majority of the world, but I knew there were going to be angry mobs if I had changed this to kmh, so knots (the meteorological standard) was the best choice. Guess that turned out to be in vain, though, as I still got hit with personal attacks because of this. Chlod (top • contribs) 01:40, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
LOL! The change was going to get some pushback. I know I didn't like it until Hurricane Noah and you explained it to me. ChessEric 01:52, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Saikumi on User:Saikumi (05:12, 10 May 2023)

Heya, Chlod! How do I change the title of my wikipedia page? --Saikumi (talk) 05:12, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @Saikumi! It depends on what you mean. Do you mean change the title to another name, or just change how it shows up (like it does on my user page)? Chlod (top • contribs) 08:06, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Potential improvements on new weather infoboxes

The new infoboxes are a big improvement from the old ones and you did a great job at implementing them but as always, there is room for expansion. Here are some improvement you could consider: 1. On /Tornado, there could be path-width and path-length parameters as they seem natural and useful information for tornadoes.
2. There could be more scales/RSMC implemented, like the Eastern Pacific Hurricane Center, the Brazilian Navy Hydrographic Center, or maybe an option to set the RSMC the storm was tracked by (this could be applied to more than just tropical cyclones).
3. Extratropical shouldn't be linked on /Extratropical; it isn't linked when |type= is set to extratropical on /Storm and may violate MOS:CONTRAST (not exactly sure if it does, you mentioned that links shouldn't be in colored bars, I'm not sure if this applies to grey bars).
These are only suggestions that you don't have to take and I don't want to pressure you, Cheers! Infinity (talk - contributions) 23:54, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@RandomInfinity17:
  1.  Added, but this comment applies until I can get a module done.
  2. I'd be happy to make the relevant box as long as I have a source for the scale. This is how the box for the NPMOC was made (which was requested by Jason Rees).
  3. The color is not configurable for /Extratropical as it doesn't take category parameters. Should someone wish to edit the header styling in a way that the contrast conflicts with the link, this would be improper infobox use and no longer within the scope of the development of the infobox. As of now, the   #c0c0c0 color contrasts enough with links and visited links (except with visited links on Vector 2022, which I can't really do much about since nothing except white would contrast enough with it).

Giving Barnstars

Hi @Chlod, how do I give people barnstars is there a simple way?Jack345110 (talk) 21:02, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @Jack345110! On other people's user talk pages, there should be a heart icon at the top of the page. This button is provided by the WikiLove extension, and can be used to provide barnstars in an easy manner. Aside from barnstars, you can also select other gifts that you can give to editors. Chlod (top • contribs) 22:55, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Chlod Thanks again for helping me out. Jack345110 (talk) 18:18, 24 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Deputy June 2023 User Experience Survey

Hello! I'm holding Deputy's first ever survey to gauge editors' experience of the tool, be it as a user or a non-user. You're invited to participate in this survey, even if you don't use Deputy! The responses collected will help improve the tool and, if you're not a user, help make Deputy work smoothly with how you do your work.

The survey can be found here, and you can learn more about this survey on the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki. Thanks! Chlod (top • contribs) 03:54, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Sandbox

Hello @Chlod, I have already used my sandbox and I cant use it at the moment as it is currently the draft Uncle Howdy, I was wondering can you have more than one sandbox and if you can how? Thanks for your time. Jack345110 (talk) 21:00, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jack345110: You can make as many sandboxes as you'd like. Just create a page on any sandbox-related title (such as User:Jack345110/sandbox2, User:Jack345110/sandbox/My Page, or something else). In my case, I also have multiple sandboxes under my userspace. Chlod (top • contribs) 22:47, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @Chlod for the help again. Please can you tell me how I change the name of the page now? Jack345110 (talk) 23:08, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jack345110: All page "renames" are page moves. There should be a "Move" button at the content actions bar or under the "More" dropdown (both found at the top of the page, at the same place you would find the "Edit" and "View history" buttons. After this, indicate the new title you want, and then move the page. Chlod (top • contribs) 23:10, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ChlodI've just looked and for some reason I don't seem to have it is it ok as I can trust you if you can rename it to Jack345110's Guestbook please. It is currently this. I don't understand why I don't have it. Jack345110 (talk) 23:21, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jack345110: I've moved the page to User:Jack345110/Guestbook. Chlod (top • contribs) 23:23, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Chlod Thanks so much sorry for that. Jack345110 (talk) 23:26, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Baba taré (22:23, 25 June 2023)

Hello please how to link a wikipedia article on openstreetmap I have already linked the wikipedia link on openstreetmap but still does not display the article on the map like The other cities that have links to wikipedia on the map , before that look at this article if the coordinates are between Tomba Kanssa --Baba taré (talk) 22:23, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Baba taré: Sorry, I'm afraid I don't understand. If you mean links to the Wikipedia article on OpenStreetMap, you must make these edits on OpenStreetMap, not on Wikipedia, namely with the "Wikipedia" field. Chlod (top • contribs) 00:31, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Some suggestions for tropical cyclones

In the monthly activity section of 'Tropical cyclones of xxxx', it's better to compare 1-min sustained wind speed from JTWC and NHC, or the readers may get confused. IntegerSequences (talk | contribs) 08:22, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@IntegerSequences: I don't edit those articles, but I don't see an issue with using the wind speeds of RSMCs either. Chlod (top • contribs) 11:37, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Baba taré (15:45, 30 June 2023)

hello please when i open this page i get an error message on my desktop for few seconds Then it will disappear I don't know to what does this mean help me i was a quick look at this page and see what's wrong Tomba Kanssa --< (talk) 15:45, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Baba taré: Unfortunately, without knowing what error message you're seeing, I can't help you. Chlod (top • contribs) 02:43, 1 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Error

@Chlod @United States Man: Regarding the new formatting: when I click on the toggles to sort tornadoes by, e.g., width, I notice that the F-scale column splits into two rows per tornado. For example, the first tornado incorrectly displays as two separate F3s, while the line that splits the two rows extends into the F-scale column, becoming bold therein. Toggling between ascending and descending order makes no difference. Do you know a way to correct the new formatting so that this error no longer shows up when toggles are used? CapeVerdeWave (talk) 21:44, 1 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@CapeVerdeWave: More information on this can be found at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Weather § Issues with new chart. Chlod (top • contribs) 02:07, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
