Vandalism[edit]

On 2nd of July at 15:39 you said that the IP address 84.70.133.184 vandalised the Talk:Mars page two times. Was that 15:39 US time or 15:39 UK time? Because at 15:39 UK time on that day I myself was using the internet and I did not make those edits. If it was 15:39 US time then that would be 8:39 UK time... when one of my brothers could have done it, although it is unlikely, as this is a shared IP address. This is just so I can have peace of mind and know who did it. I myself have my own account and don't use the anonymous 84.70.133.184 account but I would just like to make sure no-one was hacking into my internet connection.

Another weird thing: on my Internet Options it says my IP address is 192.168.1.114, yet on Wikipedia it says it is 84.70.133.184. I don't know why that is. Does that mean that Wikipedia has confused my IP address? Or that it has changed?

Thanks from 84.70.133.184.

192.168.*.* are reserved IP addresses. These addresses are only used on local subnets, so what you're seeing is an intermediate IP address. Your "real" IP address is (at least occasionally) 84.70.133.184. You can find more about this by reading Wikipedia's article on Private networks. Ben Hocking (talk|contribs) 13:31, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the time stamps appear to correspond to US Central Time. (One hour behind US Eastern Time, and I believe 6 hours behind UK Time.) Ben Hocking (talk|contribs) 13:37, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So 6 hours behind UK time would mean 9:39pm... I don't think anyone was using the computer at 9:39pm. "i am gay and you have just made a big mistake letting me edit wikepedia " and "i will just keep on changing it so do as i say and there shall be no 'unsatifactory images' online"... NO-ONE in my family would say things like that... trust me. Puzzling. From 84.70.133.184.

How are you connected to the internet? It's possible that there's one "entity" that's connected (84.70.133.184) and that this entity then "serves up" the internet to nodes on its local net (giving you a local IP of 192.168.1.114). In that case, everyone on this "local net" would have the same IP address as far as everyone else on the internet is concerned. This would only be feasible, however, on a relatively small local network (less than 256 users, I believe). Of course, a cheap ISP could (I imagine) have a variety of such entries and thus "multiply" the number of users it can "support". If this is an ISP, it sounds like it might be kinda lame. :) Ben Hocking (talk|contribs) 15:16, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the advice, I have no idea how the internet is connected (as it is a family computer and my dad does all the tech-stuff)but I deeply hope yoou're right. I swear that no-one using my computer would make those edits and I don't want my computer to be banned from editing!!! From 84.70.133.184.

Reply to the "Vandalism" accusation in "Minsk"[edit]

Caltas, you cannot accuse people of "appears to be vandalism" just because you think it is. You offended me very much. I am, personaly, sick and tired of everyone spreading lies and politicized slander about the Country (and the particular city, in this case). However much I appreciate your good-faith attempts to keep this website professional (I wish there were more people like you), I think, one needs to be a little more cautious with throwing accusations left and right. In my case, I do KNOW what I am talking about for I was born in the country (even though left it many years ago and have only vague recallections of it) and studied its hystory for 4 years at school; and, to be honest, I'm sick and tired of seeing anybody who wants changing it back and forth at will. In this particualar case, you THINK that what You know is the ultimate truth, yet it is not so. My studies are (were) based on the actual historical documents and confirmed information. So, in a way, it is an imposition of YOUR will (AND authority to block those who disagree) on others by labeling them "appears to be vandalism" just because You decided that the original version is true and not the updated. And that is totally UN-democratic. (By the way, where can I see the actual strings that had been changed? You did mention that the address can be shared and that anybody can use it. - It is true though, this connection is "very much public", if I may say so.) Once again, I thank You for your effort to keep this place professional and free from skunks of different sorts. It is a noble cause to persue. However, this string:"...editing of this sort might be considered as vandalism by some people and we/I am not happy to receive their emails..." or something like this, would probably be much softer to let a person know that something is a little of keel here or there. Thank You very much again. Regards.

P.S. I am copy-pasting this message to a document on my machine. In case if it is some sort of sabotage due to the connection being public I will re-post it again or find another way of contacting you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.82.217.154 (talkcontribs)

Sorry for responding so late (I had no internet the last weeks), and sorry for reverting your edits. I reverted you because of this edit, which looked like vandalism to me. Vandals often insert capital letters in articles, so I did not look at your other edits... (If you revert someone, all edits of this user made in a row are reverted) --Caltas (talk) 21:35, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
PS: to see the changes of a page you have to click on the tab "history" next to "edit this page" on the top of an article.

Confused[edit]

Thanks for drawing my attention to the recent vandalism performed on this IP address. i dont no how it happened. i didnt do it and my brother swears blind it was not him. Is there any other explanation for this to happen? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.67.207.4 (talkcontribs) Caltas(talk) 16:08, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The edits were made nearly ten days ago, and IP adresses change periodically. This means that another person could have done the vandalism. So just ignore the warnings or consider creating an account to avoid confusions. --Caltas(talk) 16:08, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reverting vandalism on Antonio_Vivaldi[edit]

Hi there. If I can offer some advice, I noticed you were reverting vandal edits on Antonio_Vivaldi by rolling back one version. Usually this is OK, but if the page is being heavily attacked as it was tonight it's not enough, because sometimes there are 2 or 3 vandal edits in a row - if you look at the page history for tonight you'll see what I mean.

I use WP:POP to get a quick view of the edit without having to click on each one, and I have "expand watchlist" set in my preferences, so if the article is on my watchlist I can see how much has been added and deleted by each recent edit. Anyway, it's nice to see someone else fighting them. Greetings --Stephen Burnett 20:10, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

uw-vandal3 directly[edit]

Hello, I saw that you reverted some vandalism action on the mars article. Please avoid using the {{subst:uw-vandal3}} syntax directly. Even if you are certain of the bad faith of someone using a more neutral stance with {{subst:uw-vandal2}} is more appropriated. Admin don't block people with only one warning it's more a "3 strike and your out" philosophy.

the uw-vandal3 is a sort of last warning and an aggressive one, begining by a neutral warning then moving to a more clear last warning show a clear escalation of the blocking threat. After a uw-3 or uw-4, the user is a desperate case and you go to aiv.

Usually I begin with the uw-2 warnig, but there was much vandalism on the article Mars, so I used uw-3 directly. But thanks for the hint, I will avoid it in future... --Caltas 18:26, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dear caltas[edit]

You gave me a warning that i "vandalize" on May 17, 2007 an indian reserve topic, when i was not on the computer on May 17, 2007... so can you check if you sent the warning to the right IP because i don't you have the rigth to send someone warning signs if they do not deserve a warning sig. Also the IP address intended to be mine is wrong and you might sent it to the wrong IP so please check agian because i know my computer was not on on the said date and this is making me frustrated at wikipedia so please again check. If you want proof that i did not vandalize or even edited a topic in wikipedia go to my history page and you'll that i have'nt edited a think in wiki only your warning sign is shown so please can you remove the warning --69.158.105.45 05:40, 22 May 2007 (UTC)accused[reply]

Well, I took the liberty of double-checking for Caltas and I can assure you that there was no mistake with the IP address. I would invite you to verify the following edit made on the Indian reserve page by the IP address in question here. For further assurance, you may also check the list of contributions made by the IP address here, and you'll notice that the edit Caltas was referring to was indeed made. — Dorvaq (talk) 13:44, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for responding so late, but the last two days I had a lot to do in real life... Like Dorvaq has already said above, your IP did the edit and was therefore warned correctly. But this means not necessarily that it was you who edited the page, because IP-adresses change periodically. So if this was not you, just ignore the warning or consider creating an account to avoid such confusions. --Caltas(talk) 12:43, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sockpuppetry[edit]

I believe the Ip 66.203.52.24 is a sockpuppet or being used by 66.203.52.37. This is clear on the history of Tom Petty as they have vandalized the same article in the same way within minutes of eachother an they have a similar IP. Can a Ip be suspected as a sockpuppet of another IP? I am not really sure as I don't get invlolved in the suspeccted sockpuppet stuff to often. Thanks and happy editing! •Felix• T 13:26, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism by 70.89.137.177[edit]

I would like you to know that the IP address 70.89.137.177 belongs to a school, and hundreds of people, many of them immature, use it every day. Repeated attempts at vandalism have been made from this address, as you can see from the associated User talk page. If you feel it prudent to completely block non-logged users from editing Wikipedia from this IP, I for one would have no objections. At the very least any changes should be tracked carefully.

Thanks for your work.

I'm no administrator at wikipedia, so I can't block IPs. All I do is to revert the vandalim, warn the users and IPs, who committed the vandalism, and report them to the AIV when they continue vandalizing. --Caltas(talk) 12:13, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent and extremely fast[edit]

I just saw the Talk:Mars vandalism, and tried to figure out how to fix it. When I went to click on the history page (to find an older version), I saw that you had already fixed it! Just want to add my voice to the choir of appreciative people. Thanks! Ben Hocking (talk) 17:32, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Presidential iq hoax[edit]

I deleated this page not because i wanted to vandalize wikipedia bit i believe it is biased and not educational.

You can't delete a page by simply blanking it, if want an article to be deleted, you have to nomintate it for deletion. --Caltas (talk) 17:30, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you:[edit]
