New Page Review - newsletter No.2

Hello Arthistorian1977,
A HUGE backlog

We now have 816 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Second set of eyes

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 816 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

The Castle Centre

I don't understand the reasoning for removing this page. It's local authority run, not commercial, and it is important in the context of nearby buildings because the developer was forced to pay for this leisure centre in lieu of providing affordable social housing. In addition to that many other council-run leisure centres have their own pages on Wikipedia. This is why I rarely edit Wikipedia, I take time to create pages and people just come along and delete them! Hi,

I don't know how to reply to your discussion for deletion of Chinedu Echeruo's page, so I'm trying this avenue. Chinedu's work expands beyond HopStop, so why limit his name to the redirect? The Wikipedia law you are referring to even states not to take the materials on the page seriously. If we did, no entrepreneur would be posted on Wikipedia.

Chinedu is known for HopStop, but he is evolving - he's done Tripology, he's working on MindMeet.us, etc. So I think the individual page is necessary so people see it's not just HopStop he's done.

  • The new page backlog is currently at 18,511 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.
  • Some editors are committing to work specifically on patrolling new pages on 15 July. If you have not reviewed new pages in a while, this might be a good time to be involved. Please remember that quality of patrolling is more important than quantity, that the speedy deletion criteria should be followed strictly, and that ovetagging for minor issues should be avoided.

Technology update:

  • Several requests have been put into Phabractor to increase usability of the New Pages Feed and the Page Curation toolbar. For more details or to suggest improvements go to Wikipedia:Page Curation/Suggested improvements

Peela Govinda Satyanarayana

Your review of Peela Govinda Satyanarayana while it had a CSD pending meant that, after the CSD was declined, the article was left as reviewed in this state which clearly needed more attention. It didn't help that the CSD nominator doesn't appear to keep a CSD log so the article effectively disappeared off of everybody's radar and got a free pass through NPP. Please review more carefully. Answering your comment on the Tal Itzhaki article

Hi, I'm sfine8 (Dr Sarah Fine, USA), main contributor to the above mentioned article. Thank you for reviewing my article. I think it was you who commented that some words describing in the article the design work of Ms Itzhaki, the subject of the article, are "too subjective." Let me just comment that ALL the words you cite as examples ("legendary", etc) are cited with references to theatre critics from leading newpapers in Israel (such as Maariv, Al HaMishmar, Ha'Ir", etc). Theses refer to designs which gotmthe subject of the article prizes and citations. I fail to see in what way these references (cited in full with page numbers of their sources) fall into the category of "too subjective." I would strongly suggest you will consider removing that note. As for your other suggestions, I will study them very carefully. Speedy deletion of Abdullah Al-Salloum

Dear Arthistorian1977,

I believe this article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because:

1. Source #1 is an evidence proving that the subject's book was ranked the 2nd in best-selling on the biggest Arabic bookstore. I will work on the article an add more sources proving that in a few.

2. Mentioned on the first paragraph that the subject "has received recognition for his bibliography and publications on the principles of political economics." as per all the given independent sources, which speak of his works.

Is there any more specific concerns that I should be taking care of in improving the article to satisfy the criteria in your point of view? Please advise.

UPDATE: I have improved the article. Explanations on its Talk page. Kindly let me know if you see them, yet, insufficient.

Hi Chris Troutman. I tend to search for a least simple google search prior to tagging an article. In this case I reviewed it since I saw clear pass of WP:GNG with quite enough sources. Hi, thank you for your swift response, but may I ask what criteria the article fails to meet. Hristo Iliev is one of the rising names in MMA and I believe he has a place in Wikipedia. At the least, a lot of people ask for his Wikipedia page on his last few events. He may not be Dana White or Don King, but he is a recognizable name as an MMA promoter in Europe. Since it was deleted, admin agreed with me, he is not yet notable or the article didn't emphasize it enough. You also mentioned formatting. I agree, but once again not sure what is the direction to go? You obviously have a great experience + knowledge in art and music. Also, I think it is not very necessary to split different editions into the separate articles, they are essentially have strong attributions to the main event and share members of the jury and founding organizations. NPP question

Hi! I Just joined the NPP squad. Am I supposed to tick as reviewed articles I send off to CSD, PROD, or AfD? Following the flowchart in Wikipedia:New pages patrol it seemed to me that I'm only supposed to tick as reviewed if it passes review - but I saw you ticked off as reviewed some of those who I PRODed today - e.g. Mates condoms - was I supposed to tick this one as reviewed my self? (I could see how this would make sense - as it remains in the queue if unticked - but doesn't seem to match the tutorial).Icewhiz (talk) 14:46, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi Icewhiz. There is no clear established policy, but tradition. If you mark an article as AfD, you definitely can tick it as reviewed.
